Heinrix van Calox Lore & Headcannons: Part Two

The thing people value about Heinrix is the thing he hates about himself.

We know Heinrix struggles with self-hate, stemming from the fact that he was raised to believe psykers are dangerous and tainted by chaos before his own psyker abilities manifested.

The moment Heinrix became a psyker, his value ceased to be based on himself as a person, and instead, his value became relative to his existance as a psyker.

We clearly see this in the way Heinrix talks about himself. He talks about how his family was "burnishing a rotten apple" by investing in his Knight Pilot training before his psyker abilities manifested, and how he doesn't blame them for disowning and exiling him, despite the fact that he did not choose to be a psyker.

During his romance scene in Commorragh, Heinrix talks about how Calcazar only wanted Heinrix for his psyker abilities, not caring whether Heinrix was maimed or disabled in any other capacity. And that it was Heinrix, himself, who decided to try and recover a bit of his humanity by using his biomamcy to heal himself.

From the way he talks about Calcazar's treatment of him, it gives the impression of someone who (by this point) was so numb to the concept of being used as a tool, that he had to make up an excuse for why he would want to heal himself. He "thought he would be more useful" if he healed himself and looked more "normal," instead of simply admitting that he wanted to try and recapture a bit of his humanity by literally putting himself back together after everyone around him had pulled him apart.

Calcazar's comment at the Magnae Accessio about Heinrix being far more useful as a psyker than a Knight Pilot is particularly telling and cruel, considering the fact that if Heinrix were being honest with himself, he would have preferred to have been spared the psyker curse and continue training towards becoming a Knight Pilot. He nearly admits as much if the RT asks him to tell them a secret during the post-Kiava Gamma romance scene.

All of this has to be incredibly detrimental to Heinrix's internalized sense of self and identity. The moment he became a psyker, he ceased to be a person in the eyes of those around him, and his value was stripped down to nothing more than his usefulness as a psyker. Due to that...

Heinrix doesn't realize how desperate he is for someone to see his humanity and value him for it.

To me, one of the most heartbreaking moments in the game is when, during the romance scene in Commorragh, Heinrix thanks the RT for the sympathy they show him after he talks about how he was treated by his family and Calcazar.

Heinrix flat-out states that no one has ever offered him any sort of sympathy for what he has endured. And it's obvious this offering of sympathy from the RT is meaningful and touching.

This is likely the first time anyone has not tried to justify the actions of those who harmed him and treated him as a tool. The first time someone has been concerned for Heinrix the person, rather than Heinrix the tool.

The RT is also, seemingly, the first person to ever ask Heinrix if he gets lonely traveling throughout the Expanse without family or friends. He's surprised to realize that he does, and later jumps at the chance to form a connection with the RT over games of regicide.

Upon asking Heinrix about his relationship with the Lord Inquisitor, he's quick to brag about his relationship with his "personal teacher." Despite this, Calcazar only ever seems to talk about Heinrix as a tool rather than as a pupil or a mentee.

In Act 5, Tanakia (a member of Calcazar's retinue) even chides Heinrix for being sentimental about his coworkers.

This man is desperate for someone to connect with. And, once he forms that connection with a romanced RT, we see how panicked he becomes at the thought of losing them (the way he reacts to the RT returning from Commorragh if he didn't go with them and the way he admits to being in love with the RT during the dinner date if the RT threatens to leave.)

Heinrix truly isn't aware of just how lonely he really is until someone shows him what it's like to be valued as a person.

I started the first time through Rogue Trader for Heretic and started a romance with the Inquisitor because it seemed funny in my case. The prospect of killing him in the finale didn't scare me. Wouldn't be the first time...

... after Act 3, I realized I couldn't bear the thought of hurting him...

I love the animation of Kibellah's blade dance abilities. How she twirls around, leaping across the battle field leaving a bloody trail of fallen and dismembered enemies. I don't know, but it reminds me a lot of a ballerina's moves, albeit a really deadly one. A danse macabre.

Anyway, I want a ballerina music box but with Kibellah spinning on top of it. Dream merch.
