does anybody have recommendations for books, shows, or movies that have good representation for physical disabilities, autism, or polyamory? especially recs with representation that isn't the central focus of the story. I've been looking for stuff to read and watch with this kind of rep and I'm struggling to find good stuff. i like most genres, although with books I tend towards ya

I dont know if you watch Chicago med (its an alright show) but i was watching some clips of it online and found this. I think this the few times I've seen poly relationship in a show with out a negative stigma and even shows how sweet it can be.
https://youtu.be/h0EqYWt5h_s
I do not but actually I have an acquittance who is a regular Extra on the show as one of the background doctors.
Wow! This was actually really amazing! I was skeptical at first but I loved the ending of it. Thank you!

Queen of Air and Darkness Review (SPOILERS)
It was good timing that I read this when I did because I was beginning to get self-conscious over the fact that a novel I was about to publish was nearly 600 pages. I am, by no means, a slow reader but this 900-page monster took A While.
So, the bad first. Cassandra Clare, please, I beg of you, stop with the 'We're so in love but we have something stopping us being together for three novels in a row.' With Cordelia and James, that was fraught and interesting---loads of twists and turns with the false marriage and Grace and all. It was also time-period relevant. With Tessa and Will and Jem, you came up with one of the more brilliant conclusions to a love triangle I've ever seen. The circumstances to Will's curse was darkly laughable and tongue-in-cheek creative. Clary and Jace---hated it. Categorically hated the incest bait and I knew they weren't actually related a long while before you probably wanted your audience to. Emma and Julian's star-crossed thing was almost as bad as Jace and Clary's deal.
The 'parabatai curse' felt forced and contrived. I don't recall any mention of this all-important plot device in previous novels and the explanation seemed vague and weak. The way it was resolved was an afterthought.
Also wasn't that big of a fan of Julian. He was neurotic and moody to the point where he made Jace Herondale look stable. Emma was wonderful, though.
There really is more to build a relationship other than to make it impossibly star-crossed, I promise. You seemed to realise that with Alec and Magnus and many of the other 'non-main' couples.
Speaking of which, I love, love, love that you Cristina, Kieran, and Mark to be your polyamory triad. It was a brilliant representation, but it took a frustratingly long time to get there. Even in the end, you teased us with, 'Oh but they were torn apart, never to be together aga-- JUST KIDDING.' CASSANDRA, PLEASE, I HAVE ANXIETY. But I loved their dynamics and Cristina is a *great* character. Perhaps it was my fault, being as I had such a big time gap in between reading Lord of Shadows and Queen of Air and Darkness, but I'd completely forgotten her plot with her family heirloom/Diego/Jaime. It wouldn't have hurt restating it to remind the audience, but that's also probably on me.
I wasn't quite sure how I felt about the journey to Thule at first. It was risky. On top of 'Make Idris Great Again', Star-Crossed Part 4, and Necromancy Gone Awry, I was sceptical as to whether you'd pull off a multiverse plot in the middle of the last book, but it actually worked surprisingly well.
One of the better aspects about this book is that it takes place a few years after Mortal Instruments and the Cold Peace. It shows how everyone, particularly the Blackthorns, were affected by post-war bigotry. The fact that this was written in 2018 was no surprise, as Horace Dearborn, Zara Dearborn, and Manuel Villalobos were absolute MAGA stand-ins, but I love how it translated into the magical world. And of course, seeing where Clary/Jace/Alec/Simon/Isabelle/everyone ended up was satisfying for any fan of the original series.
Wonderful with the queer representation. I believe this is the first series where you've done a transgender individual and I liked how Shadowhunter culture played into it. There were at least three queer couples on centre-stage in the entire book without it feeling exploitative, so bravo there.
I will say, the autistic representation with Ty seemed sort of heavy-handed. Just about every mention of him mentioned stimming or aversions to change and such. But as an autistic individual, I have no actual *problem* with it, as there are people like that and I've known many.
The introduction of Ash was mind-blowing and welcomed, I'd say. I can't wait to see how that character plays out. It feels sacrilegious but I almost sort of missed Sebastian.
I will say, throughout the series, Annabel Blackthorn starts out as an extremely intriguing story but it ends up nearly... written out? Like geez, have one bad breakdown and murder a couple people and suddenly, your character depth goes away. It started out strong with Malcolm's grief twisting his ambition and Annabel having understandable PTSD, but something was lost, there.
So, quite long and not without its issues, but absolutely worth the read. Especially if you're wanting some warm fuzzies about your favourite Shadowhunterverse couples.

Been in need of some second opinions on this for a bit now- TL;Dr I wanna wright a story about a poly couple (yes, another one. I’m poly. Shut up.) but I’m struggling with what I should do for the beginning- so I was wonder what you guys would think is more interesting for the start:
A: the Story starts, and they’re already dating. They have been for as long as anyone can remember. It is not questioned. It is not shamed. It just is.
B: we start with the relationship not established, and then follow the characters as it becomes more established over time.

I not exactly identify as polyam but here some things I hate in fiction as a non-monogamous person:
• Portraying polyamory as a "modern" concept or a fun experiment. Honestly, I don't dislike portrayals of people discovering themselves and experimenting, but it could come without the "omg, look, I'm polyam, I'm so modern and quirky lol"
• Hierarchies. Seriously, there is always one person being ignored or left aside all the time. As if they were less important. See: You me her (I know they criticized this later in the show, but still)
• Portraying polyamory as if it were a salvation for a crumbling marriage. Dating more people will not change the toxic nature of the characters relationship
• Portraying polycules as if they were a single relationship. In fact, there are many relationships. Not all dynamics within a polycule are the same, and it would be cool to talk about that
• Another thing: People within a polycule don't need to do everything together all the time. I know there are some people who like to do some things together with all their partners, but sometimes the portrayals about it are so exaggerate. And like, sometimes it's not even possible (ex: many people can't find beds that fit more than two people, or bathrooms, etc) - (and not all parts of the polycule have time available ever, c'mon). And like, let people have their own lives, seriously, it's not hard.
I think it's just that
Help an Author Out!
Calling all polyamorous, aromantic, or asexual folks out there!
I'm writing a story in which one of the main characters is aroace, and three others are in a polycule. I, myself, am aroace but am not polyamorous.
I want to see what YOU want to see in representation. What are some tropes you hate? What would you love to see in a story representing your identity?
Thanks!!
(Pls reblog for larger sample size!)

You know...
We have seen all kind of LGBTQ+ representation in animated media in this periode, which is a wonderful thing, really.
But there's one queer category that still hasn't got the chance to shine.
Polyamory.
Like, the only animated poly representations we've got so far are these.
And they are all beatiful, really.
But we need more.

pulls you close and looks into your eyes... doctor odyssey fandom please... promise me that if the ody3 are in a V relationship or an open polycule instead of a closed triad you will be normal about it... 🙏
#text#doctor odyssey#ody3#seeing some posts that have me Concerned#you guys do know that there's more ways to be polyamorous than throuples... right?#and that the writers arent doing anything wrong if all sides don't touch or characters have relationships outside of the ody3#despite their overwhelming representation closed triads are one of the rarer ways to do things...#I know you're all probably used to shipping monogamous couples but the show doesn't have to recreate A Couple But There's Three Of Them#to write a good polycule#and they can have different relationships within the triad!! they don't all need to be in Exactly The Same Place at Exactly The Same Time#my post#edit: just to be clear I do not think a network tv show is gonna explore the intricacies re; polyamory styles..#but that doesn't mean We should be Weird about it lmao#edit edit: just to be clearer. I am hoping and praying for all sides to touch 🤞

Update: i just had for the first time in like,,. Ever a poly couple on my tiktok fyp and guess tf what
“So elite coded”—???? Bitch you have understood absolutely NOTHING. Elite said “fuck mononorm” and REPRESENTS polyamory. And what do you do? You see a throuple and the first thing u think of is elite. And then you SAY that and that its elite “coded”???? Are you dumb?? Polyamory is a real thing. It’s not something that only elite does it actually exists! (Shocker ik)
“Now that’s a plot twist”— NO IT ISN’T. THEY WERE BOTH HOLDING HANDS AND THEY WERE BOTH HOLDING HER WAIST. WHAT ABOUT THAT IS A PLOT TWIST???
I also love how tht person immediately assumes that wlite is smt fictional because GOD FORBID polyamory exists irl
“Junge was”— (basicaly “wtf” in german.) what can i even say
“Nur die beiden jungs sind zusammen” (“only the two boys are together”)— OBVIOUSLY FUCKING NOT WTF??? They literally just SAID that and you still find a way to make it monogamous. You can’t just SAY that and then its true thats not how it works
“My jaw dropped it did”— WELL IT FUCKING SHOULDNT. NORMOLISE POLYAMORY
“She is one of their sisters i think”— no she isnt. And no you dont. Fuck. Off. Stop pretending this throuple is in a monogamous relationship because obviously they arent
“The girl is just their friend”— OH MY LORRDDDD. MF’s LITERALLY SAID “THERES THREE OF US” IN THE VERY VIDEO YOU COMMENTED ON
“Booktok newds to find the first one immediately”— why can’t you just let polyamory be a real thing. The first thing you think about is to make a book of it to FICTIONALISE it like it isn’t an actual thing. I will also bet you 10 bucks that that person was talking about a love triangle book not a polyamory one
“POlYaMoRy IsNt THAT uNdErRePreSenTeD. “
These are the results that show up when you look for it on netflix
1: stereotypical bulshit. Its also only available in germany. And i’m pretty sure it involves cheating
2: literally called “disloyal”
3: THIS LITERALLY DOESNT EVEN RWMOTLEY IMPLY THE MENTION THE CONCEPT OF POLYAMORY
4: also literally isnt polyamory
5: only jas one out of like,,, idk how many seasons there are. They also split up
6: again no fucking polyamory
7: sexualisation of polyamory
8: sexualisation of polyamory
9: (this is the ONLY other thing on netflix that includes it) is legitimately the definition of sexualisation
Fucking hell i’m so done with that shit what

After General Anesthesia
Alex Cabot x Casey Novak x fem!reader Warnings: hospital times, fluffity fluff, mentions of sex, poly representation so if you're not on board with that byeeeeee, some explicit language Word Count: 1.3k
Summary: You wake up in the hospital, groggy from the anesthesia, to two of the most beautiful women you've ever seen doting on you. Imagine your surprise when it turns out you're dating. Both of them.
Your ears and nose woke up before the rest of you. The beeping of various monitors, that sickly-clean alcohol smell. You knew before you’d opened your eyes that you were in a hospital. You’d spent too much time in hospitals with your brother not to know. You blinked against the fluorescent lights, wincing at a sudden, sharp pain in your leg.
Your head still felt fuzzy, and you didn’t remember why you were here. But your confused thoughts were interrupted as one of the most stunning women you’d ever seen in your life rushed at you, kissing your face, cupping your cheeks, and grasping your fingers in hers.
“Honey, she’s awake!” Alex called to Casey, her glasses slipping down her nose as she smiled softly at you, worried hands fluttering over your face, your arms, your body.
Casey quickly occupied the space next to Alex, leaning down and holding the palm of your hand to her flushed face. “I swear to god, Y/N, if you ever scare us like that again…”
You were dreaming. You had to be dreaming. Because a hot woman fawning over you in a hospital bed was unbelievable enough. Two hot women? That was the stuff of dreams, not reality. You had no idea who they were.
The doctors had told Casey and Alex to expect some temporary memory loss and confusion after the general anesthesia. They’d told you, too, but of course you didn’t remember.
Your words felt heavy as they fell out of your mouth, jumbled like marbles. “What’s going on?”
“You broke your ankle, sweetheart, remember?” Alex responded, scooting her chair closer to the bed so she could sit next to you and hold your hand. “But it went septic. You were very sick.”
“Yes, and you scared the hell out of me,” Casey finished, grasping your face and planting a firm kiss on your forehead before sitting down, too. She leaned over the bed railing to rest her head on your thigh, looking up at you.
You’d never felt so flustered and confused in your life. Two women. Two women holding your hand!? Touching you!? But as confused as you were, all the questions in your brain were drowned out by one, single, all-consuming thought: so, so beautiful. You felt like you’d been hit head-on by a dump truck of hormones and emotions.
“You two…” you started, words slurring like you were drunk, “...are so pretty. Like, wow.”
They shared a confused glance as you continued to ramble.
“Please tell me you’re single?” you asked, trying to wink and blinking instead. “At least one of you?”
A smile tugged at the corner of Alex’s mouth, and Casey was barely holding in her laughter.
“Wait, wait, wait,” you said, holding up a hand and gesticulating wildly. “Let me try something. I’ve been working on this.”
Casey’s shoulders had started to shake with laughter, and Alex’s eyes sparkled with mirth.
You hit them with your very best finger guns. “Hey, girl. Are you a savings account? Because I’m accruing interest in you.”
At this, Alex and Casey burst out laughing, falling into one another, equal parts delighted by your post-surgery high and relieved that you were really and truly going to be okay.
“Wait! I’ve got more!” You waggled your eyebrows at Alex, and the way she looked at you, you knew–even in your doped-up, memory-loss state–that there was no need for pick-up lines here. She was already yours. Hook, line, and sinker. But since you had it prepped: “Hey, girl. It’s just you and me in the sheets tonight. The spreadsheets! Let’s budget, baby!”
Casey was laughing so hard she was snorting, and Alex was gingerly wiping tears from under eyes, trying to smudge her mascara. You felt like you were on cloud nine. If you could do nothing else in your life except make these two women laugh, you’d die happy.
“Come on,” you needled, smiling ear to ear. “Look at me, I’m adorable. I’m charming. You know you want to give me a chance.”
Alex coughed, trying to pull herself together, and Casey leaned down again, placing her chin on your leg and staring up at you lovingly.
“Y/N, you know we’re dating, right?”
Your eyebrows shot up and you stared at her. Her auburn hair that looked soft as the surface of water. Her eyes. Her body. “Me and you!? Are dating!?”
“No, we’re all dating,” Casey explained, gesturing between the three of you. “Me and you and Alex.”
You glanced at Alex to confirm and she nodded, smiling cheekily.
Your jaw dropped as you took in this new information. You put a hand on your head as if this was all just too much for you. And, in your current state, it kind of was.
“Me!?” you asked, glancing between them. “You’re… both of you!?”
They nodded, grinning and trying not to laugh.
“Holy shit,” you said, spurring another fit of laughter from the chairs next to your bed. “This is crazy!”
You sat and thought for a few minutes, mouth gaping.
“You alright, love?” Alex asked, running her thumb back and forth across your wrist.
You leaned toward them, as if to share a secret, then gasped sharply at the pain.
“Ow!”
“Jesus, Y/N! Lay back!” Casey complained, trying to sound stern but really just sounding worried. She stood and gently shoved your body back down into the pillows. “I think we broke her brain, Alex.”
“Psst!” you hissed at them, your impaired brain feeling inexplicably salty about being left out of their conversation.
“What, you dork!?” Casey exclaimed.
You squinted conspiratorially at them. “Do we… you know?...”
Casey and Alex swiveled their heads to look at each other, then collectively burst out laughing again.
“Oh, yeah,” Casey assured you.
“We sure do,” Alex added.
“All three!?”
They nodded at you, still chuckling.
“Wow. Jesus fucking Christ. Am I dreaming right now!?”
“Believe it or not, no,” Casey said, watching as your eyes fluttered between open and shut. You needed to sleep. She could tell.
She ran her thumb across your eyebrows and down the bridge of your nose, back and forth, back and forth. A surefire way to put you to sleep. Alex and Casey knew all your tricks.
You exhaled deeply, trying so hard to keep your eyes open.
“Go to sleep, baby,” Casey whispered lovingly. “When you wake up you’ll remember.”
You mumbled as you drifted between sleeping and waking. “I’m not tired. I can’t be tired, I have two girlfriends to take care of.”
Alex and Casey smiled at one another. Alex stood and wrapped her arms around Casey’s waist, planting a kiss on her cheek as they watched you fall asleep.
“Two girlfriends,” you continued, your words losing volume and speed. “The nicest, smartest, prettiest girlfriends. So pretty. So many boobs.”
“God, I wish we’d recorded this,” Casey whispered, placing a soft kiss on your cheek before leaning back in her chair.
Alex dropped her phone onto Casey’s lap, the screen showing an active voice recording.
Casey fist-pumped silently, pulling Alex down by the collar for a quick kiss.
“I love you,” Casey said, unlocking Alex’s phone to send herself the recording.
“I love you, too,” Alex chuckled. She foraged in her bag by the door before pulling her chair close to you, propping up a book with one hand and holding yours with the other. “I love our girl, Case.”
“She’s something else, isn’t she?” Casey observed, smiling softly and shaking her head at your drugged, sleeping form. “How’d we get so lucky?”
“Pure, dumb luck,” Alex decided, flipping a page and absentmindedly rubbing the back of your hand.
Casey stood and stretched, then slumped onto the sorry excuse for a couch in the corner of the room, kicking off her shoes.
“I’m exhausted,” she groaned, pulling off one sock and then the other. “It’s a good thing we weren’t both out of town this weekend. I was up all night with her before she finally agreed to go to the hospital. Stubborn asshole.”
“Reminds me of someone else I know.”
“Shut up, Alex,” Casey protested, grinning, before throwing a sock at her.
“Why don’t you sleep?” Alex suggested, ignoring the sock on the floor next to her. “Get some rest, honey. I’ll wake you when she’s up again.”
Casey nodded and folded her arms over her chest, letting herself drift off, snoring softly as she always did and always swore she didn’t.
Alex set down her book and looked at her two sleepy girls, knowing there wasn’t a thing in the world she wouldn’t do for you and Casey.
“So fucking lucky,” she whispered, drawing your hand to her lips to kiss your knuckles.

quick, everyone what is your favorite on screen polyam ships with some meat to them? it doesn't have to be canon because there's like three of those, but ships with the vibes there. I'll start because my brain is melting
Lockwood and Co
cot3 (canon in my heart and subtext)
the bastard son and the devil himself
nabrielise (canon!)
leverage
the leverage ot3 (pseudo-canon, confirmed by creators but limited to subtext and performance chemistry)

There are more LGBTQA+ people nowadays than there were before, but it has nothing to do with it being a "trend" or being a "choice" like homophobes/transphobes convince themselves, it's literally because of population.
In 1950 there was 2.5 Billion people in world population, we just hit 8 Billion. There's literally more of EVERYBODY now than ever because there's never been this drastic of a spike in population before.
So yes, there are more of us, but it's because of population, not because we're following some "trend".
Your child is actually non-binary.
Your child is actually asexual.
Your child is actually queer.
The easiest thing in the world should be loving and accepting your child.

Hello! Im poly but not as much in touch with the community so I thought id ask someone more experienced in a way instead of overthinking for weeks lol hope thats no issue since its not rlly a irl thing
Im making a comedy comic and I want there to be a joke where the main cast travels alot and anytime they say "we'll need help In x location" one of the poly characters keeps on saying "don't worry guys I have a girlfriend in there, she'll help us" and through the comic he has like 20+ girlfriends in all these diffrent locations, while its suppoust to be a lil joke i want to make sure it's not going into harmful territory so I thought id ask someone more in the community since while i am poly i also do recognize that im not above making stupid mistakes like that
Ah the overthinking and comedy are a duo i fear ToT
I personally fucking love that.
I can't promise no one else could conjure something to make it ✨️Problematique✨️ in their head, of course, but I think it's funny and cute for a comedy comic! I'd say go for it! Couple considerations below the cut that come to mind if you're trying to make "good poly rep", but these aren't hard and fast rules
Okay first thing for "good poly rep" is when we see the girlfriends, I'd show them being cutesy together😍!! They should be excited to see each other! Depending on the woman, maybe have pet names, inside jokes, etc. You don't have to belabor the point by stopping the action for eight pages every time we meet a girlfriend. I can think of several pithy ways that work well for a comedy comic (every time we meet a girlfriend, a shot of him exclaiming increasingly bizarre pet names and running into each other's arms, for example).
Secondly. I think it's fine if you leave the bit as it is, but if I were reading as a poly person, I'd be hoping for some other little indication all these girlfriends actually still matter to the character when they dont matter to the plot. Even just another throw away gag. He's going out Christmas shopping and comes home with an actual pack mule full of presents because he has so many partners to buy for (or vice versa, he has dozens of presents under his Christmas tree that are all covered in hearts and signed by different names. Or both). Or something like that. Maybe we see his phone calendar and it just COVERED in "phone call with Emily" "video chat Monique." He ends upbin the hospital and there's a line out the door for his visitors. Whatever. Even if it was a single-frame thing, I'd LOSE MY MIND. Totally optional, but it's something I would squee about 😁
Basically, it boils down to, make all these girlfriends... girlfriends. Otherwise it feels not super distinct from womanizing.
Hope that helps!! Good luck!! I'd LOVE to see this comic, please shoot me a link!
