How Denton and Katherine talk to the newsies

I was just thinking about how I love the tone Denton uses when talking to the newsies in this scene. I'm aware that the audio doesn't pick up well when I record, so I've transcribed what he's saying.

Hey fellas, this is it, yay, you're in this too, yeah, hey, big time.

Most of these boys aren't little kids anymore, but Denton talks to them as if they were to get them excited, and it works. The way he says to Spot, 'you're in this too' is so nice to see. Put up a tough front all you want, but you can't not smile when the father figure of the year is proud of you.

Even though I feel like the second clip has a clearer audio, I've transcribed what Katherine says for continuity's sake:

I've spoken similarly about how Katherine is affectionate to the newsies in King of New York (although I don't believe I used that particular word) in this post. But I think that's the word to describe how Denton and Katherine interact with them: affection.

They serve very different purposes, and it's mostly (in my opinion) down to their ages. Denton is in his thirties, whereas Katherine is 17-21, depending on who you ask. They both talk affectionately to the newsies, but Denton speaks to them as if they are children, whereas Katherine speaks to them as if they are friends (I feel that she becomes an older sister figure to everyone except Jack... obviously).

Basically, they're treating the newsies like family, and that's why they're so loved. In a world with both Katherine and Denton, they wouldn't conflict whatsoever because they fill different familial gaps in the newsboys' lives.

Yeah, I just love how affectionate Denton and Katherine are when interacting with the newsies, and I wish we got to see more of this. I know I'd gladly watch a 'found family' movie/musical of just that.

So, if you write Newsies fanfiction, could you please write more of this? I'd love to see it.

the fic is after Crutchie is taken to the refuge, a little after where "Letter from the Refuge" takes place, and instead of Jack staying with Medda, he runs away from the strike

The newsies are kind of pissed off at Jack, justifiably so, because he left them and also because Jack, at this moment where he is completely desolate, ended up saying some mean things to them in the letters

It kind of follows the path of the monster AU, where Crutchie is Frankenstein's monster, the only difference is that he's a little upset with Jack
