I rewatched Zuko and Azula's Agni Kai recently and it's left me wondering – when Zuko begins to goad Azula into striking him with lightning, was he making the decision to kill her?

Because had Azula shot lightning directly at him like he planned and not at Katara, the most forthright implication to me is that he was intending to strike Azula with her own lightning. And Azula, for all her mastery, would not have been able to counter that.

On the other hand, maybe he wasn't planning to kill her at all and was simply planning to redirect it elsewhere (similar to what he did with Ozai). But given the tone of tragedy throughout the Agni Kai, the fact that they both acknowledge that this fight will be "the end" to them, I don't think it's inaccurate to read Zuko's actions as him preparing to kill Azula, even though an Agni Kai doesn't have to end with death (and in canon it didn't). Also, why goad her into striking him with lightning if he wasn't planning on doing something intentional with it? If anything, it adds another layer to the tragedy to me, because I don't believe Zuko wants to kill her. And it stands in such contrast to the way that Azula desperately wants to kill him.

I also think that there would have even been something sadly poetic in that sort of demise for Azula should the Agni Kai had gone this direction: Azula, struck down by her preferred sub-skill. Azula, struck down by the very bolt of lightning that she intended to kill her brother with. Azula, struck down by her own power.

Trader Johann is just a blatant antisemitic stereotype, Astrid has literally no episodes that aren't also centered around Hiccup in some way (misogynistic writing), the Wing Maidens being a cannibalistic tribe that are referred to as 'native women' more than once, that episode where Dagur literally says a slur (esk*mo), which I've never seen anyone talk about??? And more honestly.

It's really disheartening considering httyd is my special interest and rtte offers some really great worldbuilding and development, but then again it's to be expected. After all if you're not white you can't ever fully enjoy anything without looking the other way on racist some kind aspects whether it be the story's harmful writing or actions of people involved in its making, there's always something.

i hope everyone is safe right now. i hope for your safety. i am so sincere. everyday i’m aware of what i have to do to make sure i’m accomplishing what i’m capable of so that you’re safe. at the end of a shift i make sure my coworkers get into their cars safely, i call my friends to make sure they’re alright because i’m not there to watch them, i wear whatever i can to make sure that my political standings are clear to anyone who decides to look at me so they can know that resistance exists and i will confront them if they’ve got the balls to tell me they have a problem, i am keeping an ear out for local protests and any boycotts i can participate in, im texting and calling and emailing any politician of any kind that i come across because even something like tiktok makes it so easy for me to get prompts that i can fill out or follow along to. sometimes it’s as easy as making noise or walking someone to their car or annoying your local representation or wearing pins on the front of your shirt. resist. and stay alive.

Gonna be real. I know I’m super biased in saying this but I genuinely think it’s more conducive to the story’s message and themes if Thistle is still alive after the end of the manga. Like.

There’s all these examples of characters talking about how love and support from those who matter most to you is what can allow you to heal despite experiencing immense trauma. Themes of life and death and rebirth in both a physical and metaphysical sense. I just think it’s so much more satisfying for Thistle to get that, too, more so than the tragedy of him dying. You could say that him not getting that chance is just how things go sometimes, but in a series all about defying fate and walking the more difficult but fulfilling path (after all, recovery and facing the reality of it all certainly wouldn’t be easy) I would argue that him living serves the narrative much better.

Political post ahead, and given this is a site that is (I would say) dominantly Democratic/left/"woke," if you don't want to read commentary from a Republican/conservative/"traditionalist," I completely understand, but this is your warning.

Just dropped (albeit somewhat accidentally) into a Tumblr community about Animation, and what should I see than the first several posts being about the US election and about saying Fie upon Donald Trump. And while I genuinely feel for people who have legitimate fear over him taking up the US Presidency, I also find myself a little bit baffled to see people think the world is going to spontaneously combust if he takes office again.

Yes, I will have my own share of concern if Kamala Harris takes office, and while I don't expect things to get any better than they were under the Biden administration, I'm also not screaming-crying-throwing up over the idea. It makes me uncomfortable, but only because her ideology differs from mine, and it's difficult to be comfortable with things we don't agree with.

Long story short, I genuinely wish peace upon anyone, on any part of the political spectrum, who is facing extreme anxiety over the outcome of the election. I also hope you take a breath and realize it's not the end of the world. Please do yourself that service. You're worth the peace, baberino 🙏
