i don't know maybe it's the translation i read but i guess i always thought it was made fairly clear that shuro never legitimately hated laios so much as he resented him for being able to be the way he was. much like laios (albeit for very different reasons) shuro's affect is frequently commented on by others to be strange and at a mismatch with the prevailing culture around him, being very reticent to the point of the part where he tells the girl he likes that he likes her being when he Proposed. quite a few characters say something to this effect! shuro was raised in formality and stoicism and i think has a tendency towards not rocking the boat even besides that, and now here's this guy who breaks every one of his rules and he makes it look so easy. it's like a two-pronged frustration of "doesn't this guy understand that you can't just do that" and "fuck, what would it feel like to be able to do that." of course he gets mad! it's frustration, but it's also envy.
#the nemesis speaks#after their fight they're very chill/friendly and in the nightmares chapter laios literally says something to the effect of#''i thought we worked this out already!'' when dream shuro shows up. so he does consider that fight to be Working Things Out#&that like. imo makes it pretty clear that shuro's dislike of laios was never like inherent? it was just another product of him not-#-being able to say clearly when he likes or doesn't like something. trying to keep a lid on that pot until it boiled over#once the air had been cleared and laios was aware of it- i mean the relief of that honesty must have been-#-kind of fresh air to shuro atp regardless after not saying anything for so long.#& i think you can't bare that much of your soul to another person without becoming friends at least a little bit#plus all of shuro's actions after that chap and his demeanor towards laios are much warmer in general#idk where i'm going with this i guess tl;dr it's not even that shuro hates laios' autistic traits it's that they're like-#-out of place socially in opposite directions and shuro dislikes how unfamiliar laios is but also kind of wants to be more like him#this is beyond just the fact that the final line of their fight (in the translation at least) was quite literally#''that's the part of you that i envy''

BUT SHEâS LOOKING AT YOU.
Aaron Hotchner.
cw: It girl!reader x aaron, youâre just so hot everyone wants u tbh, alcohol, men.
-------------
You are aware that you were attractive, you never had any struggle getting attention from the public, not growing up, not in college and certainly not now. It was rare, apparently, to have both intelligence and beauty but you didn't believe it defined you and your capabilities. Though, it shocked people when you told them your job. They assumed you modelled or were a social media influencer or something of sorts, some guy even told you that your beauty was being wasted on working for the FBI. Yeah, saving people's lives is realllyyy unattractive.
The team was out in a celebratory drink for finishing a rough case, even Aaron had joined the team this time. He didn't often come out but he liked it when he did, he liked spending time with the team, with you, outside of working hours. Though, he disliked having to watch men goggle their eyes at you.
Rossi ordered drinks and a bar tender brought an extra one over.
"Sorry, I didn't order that." Rossi exclaimed and gestured to the drink in the bartenders hand.
"Oh, it was sent by the man at the bar for you." She eclaimed looking at you, you widened your eye and looked to the bar, seeing a man wink at you.
"Lovely..." you said sheepishly and pushed it away, back to her. "Am I okay to send it back?"
The bartender smiles and nods at you, as you watch her walk away and you look back to the team embarasssed.
"Hey pretty lady's on the radar." Morgan exclaimed and you shoot him a look, shifting in your seat and looking at Aaron who was already watching you.
"You act like it's not always like this," Emily shrugs and sips her drink as you protest, "honey, I don't blame them, I'd buy you a drink if you so much as breathed in my direction."
You laugh at her dramatic comment and shook your head. "I appreciate the praise but really I'm not interested."
"By him or by anyone because in the time we've known you, you've been hit on by all of us combined and tripled." JJ laughs and sips her drink, genuinely curious.
"You're dramatic," you say softly, "but, it doesn't mean that I don't want a relationship just... I don't like the men that hit on me I guess." You shrug, looking at Aaron.
"Some of the men are absolutely delicious sweetie, you can't deny that." Garcia argues excitedly.
Morgan seems to catch on. "Oh, oh."
"What?" you ask him curiously.
"Pretty lady over here has a crush." He smirks and the others gasp with excitement at the gossip.
"I'm getting another drink." You stand up and go to the bar, Aaron getting out to follow you. You both head to the bar and order your drinks, Aaron paying.
"You didn't have to pay," you smile at him, ignoring the glances being thrown in your direction from well... everywhere.
"No but I wanted to." He shrugs and looks at you as your drinks are getting prepared. "You look beautiful by the way."
You blush and look down them back up at him, grinning widely. "Thank you. So do you."
You thank the bartender but make no move to leave the bar to return to the table just yet, looking back at Aaron. "You're different with me, why?"
"What do you mean?" You smile as you look at him, you knew what he meant.
"You know what I mean. You donât seem to be sending the drink I bought you back.â He smirks slightly and you laugh, looking into his eyes.
âI feel safe with you.â You shrug and sip your drink. âPlus, youâre double the man these are.â
He raises a brow at you. âHow so?â
You sigh and look at him. âA girl wants to be considered more than âhotâ, to be called more than âsexyâ in her lifetime.â You shrug and look up at him.
âWhile I appreciate the sentiment, you make me feel beautiful.â You say softly looking at him, tilting your head as you admire his face.
He smiles at you, a genuine smile as he places his hand on your lower back, guiding you back to the table. Sitting opposite you once more. You join in a conversation with Emily, Garcia, Spencer and JJ.
Aaron on the other hand id being smirked at by Morgan and Rossi. âDonât.â
âOh- we donât have to say anything.â Rossi smirks, with a knowing look as he raises his glass to Aaron.
âYouïżœïżœre in the big L Hotch,â Morgan chuckles, shaking his head.
âEverybody watches her⊠she is probably the most wanted woman here tonight. I have no chance.â Hotch shakes his head.
âEverybody may be watching her, but sheâs looking at you.â

Could I get a Mammon, Vox and Husk with a S/O who gets harassed on the street and their reaction? You can have full creative control over what type of harassment!
I love your fics- if this isnât getting the creative juices flowing just let me know and Iâll request something different <3
đŠ· anon
Husk | Mammon | Vox [Romantic]
In which some loathsome idiot thinks they'll get away with harassing their beloved s/o.
One of your favourite date nights is spent bar hopping
Pop a drink or two in each one, sometimes sharing one cocktail, his wing draped around you, your head leant on his shoulder, humming to the music surrounding you
Both of you had a preference for the less popular spots, the kinds of places you got the weirdest combinations, where he could be inspired and you could give him thoughts
The plus side of the smaller joints was that the music was never too loud, drinks were cheaper, and there was always a few spots free at the bar
Downside was that most places had their regulars, the kind of people who couldn't get in anywhere else
The kind of desperation that builds and spreads like mold in the corner of a dark room next to a leaky pipe
On a few occasions, someone would harmlessly ask to buy you a drink and would turn tail when Husk gave them his usually 'fuck off' look
But this time, the guy would just not get the hint
" What? Already claimed dibs on the bitch? "
Yeah- no, that attitude towards you is not going to fly
Not even three seconds and there's a bottle smashed on the drunk demons head, and three cards flying back into Husk's hand
That's when the bleeding starts
You slap a 20 down for your bill and jump straight up, already being dragged by Husk out the door
Insists if he stayed there you would have both gotten banned anyways, and he likes that spot
You guys don't really go out so casually without a good reason, or just for old times sake
A sin and his spouse on a city street in greed was just asking for bad things to happen
But still, if you asked and he had nothing that day, Mammon would always rather get quality time with you and people watch
Thats most of your conversation, pointing out demons and joking about what you think they are like, what the do, how they speak
It's always a fun game, until some newcomer saw you laughing at him and marched right up, clearly on something and clearly ready to have a go at someone
The moment he reaches for your wrist, his thumb falls to the floor, a messy and jagged cut the only sign of attack besides one of Mammons spider legs now revealed
Before he can even realize the pain or what's happened, Mammon lets out a menacing laugh
" Every extra inch towards my broad is another finger. "
That demon was already screaming and running away, most the crowd on the street that was watching now hurrying in any direction opposite of you and Mammon
" I'm only worth one finger? "
" Nah. Just being generous for once. "
Not really a street guy, but unfortunately some press conferences and events require mingling and interacting with others, which he never liked
Thankfully, with you he has an excuse to stay away from others, or show you off
He usually goes for the latter
He's all 'Have you met my wife?' 'My wife loves x and y!' 'Isn't my wife absolutely gorgeous?'
You are the first topic he speaks of after his company; you'd be the first if he didn't have to waste so much time being a salesman, but that is how the cookie crumbles
Sometimes when there's specific press releases, he has to send you off for a moment, where you usually go and mingle with some of the others in his industry you befriended
During one such interview, he couldn't help but spot out the corner of his eye, some lousy business woman drape her arm around your waist and grab at your hip
" Sorry yeah, this interview is over. "
Literally shoves his way over, sparks and electricity flying, to rip you out of her arms
" Baaabe, is this a friend? Whatever the case, we really gotta get going! "
Jealousy 3000
He's glad he stepped in after he overhears that lady had a habit of harassing other attendees
New clause in every interview; they have to include you or provide security over you while he is busy
Author's Note - Tooth anon comes in for another PIPIN HOT request!! I actually feel so bad because every time I take a break form writing is on yoru request and that really makes it look bad I am so sorry đ©

Roommate Binghe would absolutely make the most insanely hilarious Reddit thread thatâs so out of touch with reality. I can just hear the comments begging him to give the woman he dates a break and just bend over and fuck his roommate already
That thought is literally what inspired this au for me in my head I had this idea of binghe saying "am I the asshole for not picking my BEST FRIEND OF TEN YEARS over a woman I've been dating for two weeks?" And it's one of those aita posts that have a deceptive title because everyone reads that and goes of course not! Then the actual post is this:
"I (21M) met my best friend (22M) when I was 11 and he was 12. I used to be really weak and scrawny back then, and he saw me getting bullied at the playground and became the first person who ever stood up for me. After that he asked his parents to hire my mom and we could finally move out of poverty. She was really sick at the time and getting a better paying job really helped her get better. I'm saying all this to show how important he is to me and why anyone should understand that he'll always be the most important person in the world to me.
He's also a bit sickly. Nothing severe but he has asthma and picks up illnesses way easier than most people, so I often take care of him.
Recently he said he wanted to meet my girlfriend, so I agreed the three of us should have dinner together at a nice restaurant. She was weirdly quiet the whole time, staring at the two of us talk. When we left it was late, and the night air was making him shiver, so I gave gege my jacket. I thought we'd all head our separate ways from there but my girlfriend got super moody and said it was my job to drive her back too?? I said "I'm not making gege walk back because you want me to drive you home" and she was about to yell at me when gege stepped between us and said I can drop her off and then take us home. It was annoying because she lives in the opposite direction but I agreed.
When we got to her apartment, instead of saying thanks and leaving, she said she wants to talk to me. Obviously I didn't want to leave my friend alone in the car, but he just smiled and said I should say goodnight to my girlfriend. He's always very sweet and indulgent to the people I date, to the point it's a little frustrating.
Once we were alone, she blew up at me, claiming I ignored her all evening. She got mad at me, saying that gege was wearing jeans and a full sleeve shirt while she was wearing a short dress and I gave my jacket to him instead. I explained to her that his immune system is weak so if he caught a chill he'd be sick way longer than if she got a cold.
That was our first argument. She got over it in a few days. but I didn't want her around gege anymore lest she said something about me "picking him over her" and made him feel guilty for no reason.
Afterwards she invited me to be her plus one at her cousin's wedding. I said I'd go but just two days before gege got really sick. I said I'd stay with him, but he insisted I go to the wedding and he'd get someone else to look after him. He mentioned this guy who I absolutely hate and that's when I knew I couldn't leave him in anyone else's care.
Gege's friend is a terrible influence on him. He's an idiot with no brain and a creep who clearly wants to take advantage of him. I absolutely could not leave the two of them alone when he was so vulnerable so I refused to leave him alone even for a few hours. Gege was too feverish to remember the wedding after the first day so he didn't say anything about it.
I was so busy taking care of him, I forgot to tell her I wouldn't be able to come to the wedding. I didn't bother picking up my phone until gege was back on his feet and saw about 50 missed calls all from her. When I called her back she was screaming so loud, gege could hear her even though she wasn't on speaker. After I hung up on her, he looked so sad and said he was sorry for being the reason I couldn't go. I told him I didn't even want to go and it was just her cousin, but for the last week he's had a perpetual frown on his usually smiling face. I feel so terrible. I want to tell him it's not his fault, of course I'd choose his HEALTH over a date, but he's really beating himself up about it... I hate that I made him feel that way.
Top comment: THAT'S THE PART YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR???? THAT YOUR GEGE FEELS BAD????????? NOT HOW YOU MISTREATED YOUR POOR GIRLFRIEND?????
Second comment: just fuck your best friend instead of making her suffer bro đđ

love between the lines | chwe vernon

SUMMARY: despite the initial nerves of your new gig as an english literature TA, youâre ready to tackle the new job. thatâs where you meet vernon, the computer science TA, and heâs interesting to say the least. heâs all about coding and numbers while you live and breathe poetry and novels. itâs clear that you both have contrasting interests and personalities - but they say opposites attract, right?
PAIRING: TA!vernon x TA!reader
THEMES: opposites attract, strangers to lovers, chaotic x calm dynamic
WARNINGS: fluff, kissing, silly antics
WORDCOUNT: 12k
A/N: this is part of the SVT TA collab hosted by @camandemstudios. and thank you to @gyuswhore and @highvern for hosting this collab and inviting me to join! i've been so excited about this, i hope you all enjoy reading! and do check out everyone else's work on this collab as well!
itâs been a week since you got the gig as an english literature TA at the university and you were thrilled despite the nervousness. you adjust the stack of poetry books and textbooks under your arm as you walk, feeling both excitement and nerves as you head to your fourth class of the week. thankfully it seemed like the students really liked you and your teaching methods, which you were utterly grateful for, otherwise you might have just quit then and there.
youâre so lost in your thoughts, that you collide with someone coming from around the corner. papers fly and scatter in all directions, and you look up to see the stranger in front of you, wide-eyed. âwoahâ, is all he says as he looks at you, rather calm despite the chaos that you seem to have caused around him.
âoh god, i'm so sorry!" you exclaim, bending down to help gather the papers, his papers, which were now scattered all over the floor.
the stranger doesnât say much as he kneels beside you and reaches out to collect the sheets of papers. "no worries, it's not like these papers were organized to begin withâ, he says, which somehow seems to ease your nerves.Â
you let out a small nervous chuckle as you collect the stray papers, your hands brushing accidentally. you glance down nervously, picking up your scattered books.Â
âare you new around here?â, he asks, recalling that heâs not seen you around before.
âyeah, i just joined the english literature department as a TAâ, you tell, but he had sort of already deciphered that information with the stack of books you were carrying. heâd heard that someone had filled in that position last week, but never got around to being introduced to the person, until now.
âiâm vernon, the computer science TAâ, he says and you smile softly at that piece of information. ânice to meet youâ, you reply and you hand him the papers you had gathered. you tell him something about how you were running late for a lecture and part ways as he nods and goes back to his way.Â
itâs another work day and youâre in your office, typing away on your laptop as you plan some material for the next lecture. but your laptop seems to be glitching and working slower than usual. you furrow your brows in confusion as the file seems to be taking a little too long to download. you sigh and stare at your laptop screen, watching the download bar stay stuck at the same percentage for ten minutes now. you click your tongue in frustration and lean back in your chair. thatâs when your mind wanders to vernon - heâd probably know what was going on. sure, you barely knew the guy, never spoke to him after you had bumped into him that day, but hey, was asking for help a crime? besides, maybe you could use this opportunity to get to know him better, plus he seemed like a decent guy. so you carry your laptop and head to vernonâs space, knocking on the slightly open door.Â
âcome inâ, he says, without looking up, his brows furrowed in concentration as he stares at his laptop screen.
âif this is about an extension on the deadline then oh-â, vernon starts but stops when he looks up and sees you.Â
âhi, sorry i hope iâm not interrupting anything?â, you ask as you stand in front of vernon with your laptop open in your hands.
âoh, no-no, whatâs up?â, he asks, as he leans back in his chair a little.
âmy laptop is acting kinda weird, itâs become really slow and stuff is taking ages to download. i thought you might know whatâs the issueâ, you tell, setting your laptop down on the table next to him.
he moves his laptop aside and brings yours in front of him as he tries to figure out the issue. your eyes wander to his laptop adorned with stickers and you read one of them.
why do programmers prefer dark mode? because light attracts bugs, you read in your mind and furrow your brows as it takes a few seconds for the joke to make sense before you smile softly at the joke.
you read another programming joke sticker that was slapped on his laptop and you laugh to yourself. âi think iâve found the problemâ, vernon says, snapping you back to reality and your eyes find him as you walk over to see what he was talking about.Â
âyour storage is almost critically full, thatâs why your laptop has slowed down. you should probably transfer some files to a hard drive and clear up some space on your laptopâ, he explains and you nod at the new information vernon provides you with. see, it was a good idea you asked vernon for help or god knows what you might have done otherwise, thinking it might have been some other issue.
âoh, okay, iâm glad itâs not a major issueâ, you add, relieved because you did not need your laptop dying out on you right now.
âno worriesâ, he says as he hands you back your laptop. you would have very much liked to stay back and talk to him more, but he looked so busy with whatever he was doing. you didnât want to be a bother, so you leave, telling him thank you as you leave.Â
after that, you seem to see vernon and bump into him more, whether it be at the hallways or between classes. the one thing you couldn't help but notice was how vernon's constant companion was his laptop. he carried that thing everywhere like his life depended on it. and the condition of his laptop? that thing was covered in stickers, some with obscure programming jokes and others, which were a random mix of stickers that you were convinced he just slapped on there because he had nowhere else to put them. the other thing that was always a constant with him was the pair of headphones that adorned his neck. you swear you had never really seen him without those two things.
in your first two weeks as a TA, you discovered a new talent: bumping into people. apparently, your talent for bumping into people was unparalleled. why? because reading a book and walking down the hallways was definitely not advised. you might as well have been walking blindfolded with the number of students and faculty you accidently bumped into your first two weeks. thatâs one way to make a first impression.Â
you were glad it wasnât anything worse, but you needed to get your act together and you were hoping that things would ease up and smooth out soon. but if only you knew how wrong you were. it was like the universe was purposely conspiring against you to not have your TA gig go smoothly. youâre packing up to leave when you realize you canât find your novel anywhere. you swear you had bought it along with you today to read on the bus, but now it was nowhere to be seen. you try to think of where you could have misplaced it and decide to check the lecture room since you might have left it there. you had rushed out of the room after the lecture so maybe you had forgotten it over there.Â
you walk to the lecture hall (without bumping into anyone thankfully) and enter, spotting vernon there. you walk in quietly, not wanting to disturb him since he looked really focused on whatever he was doing. the door closes behind you and your eyes scan the room for your book and voila, you spot it on the edge of the table where vernon was sitting. you quietly go up to him and grab your book when vernon looks up.
âi just forgot my book hereâ, you say immediately, like you were caught doing something you shouldnât be before you turn around. you mentally slap yourself because why were you so nervous? you walk towards the door and your hand reaches out, grabbing onto the handle. but when you push the handle down, it doesnât budge. you try again but it still doesnât seem to move. you try to pull the door open but still no luck. what the hell?
you take a deep breath and try to open the door again, but find it stubbornly jammed. you wiggled the handle, pulled, and pushed it, but it remained immovably shut. vernon finally looks up with all the commotion you seem to be causing and he looks at you with a puzzled expression.
âis everything okay over there?â he asks as he looks at you.Â
âyeah totally, just on my way outâ, you lie as you try the door handle again but it refuses to budge and you sigh.Â
âum, i think the doorâs stuck,â you finally admit, your voice tinged with frustration as you turn to look back at vernon.
âohâ, is all he says before he closes his laptop shut with a soft thud and stands up. you watch as he walks over in your direction and tries the door handle, only to find it jammed like you said.
âi told them this door handle needed to be changed, it was bound to get jammed one day or the other,â he says.
âso weâre locked in,â you declare dramatically, eyes wide as you look at vernon.
âyeah, i guess,â vernon responds with a nonchalant shrug, as if being trapped in a room is just another regular tuesday evening for him.Â
âbut how do we get out?â you ask, your voice rising in pitch as you look at vernon.
âi guess i could try to pick the lock, but since itâs jammed i donât think that would workâ, he says.
âpick the lock?â, you ask, almost horrified at his suggestion. âare you serious? we should call security or somethingâ, you say instead.Â
vernon leans against the wall, clearly unfazed. âyeah, sure, but calling security sounds so... formal. plus thereâs no guarantee theyâll actually come on time, so i guess weâre stuck here for a whileâ, he says with a light shrug of his shoulders.
you didnât like the way vernon was so calm about this entire situation right now. you look at him, your frustration bubbling to the surface. âare you seriously this relaxed about being trapped in here?â
vernon tilts his head, as he looks at you. âyeah, why not? itââs not like weâre in a life-or-death situation, itâs just a door, weâll get out eventually.â
âeventually?â you repeat, your agitation growing. âwhat if âeventuallyâ turns into hours? what if weâre stuck here until everyone goes home for the day? do you really think thatâs okay?â
âsomeone is bound to find us in the morningâ, he says like heâs had experience being locked in a room before and is totally okay with spending the night trapped in here.Â
âiâm calling securityâ, you declare, as you dig your phone out of your jeans pocket, unable to comprehend vernonâs suggestion. as you explain the situation to the security, you canât help but glance over at vernon, whoâs back by the desk, perfectly calm and composed unlike you.Â
âalright, so securityâs on their way,â you announce after a few minutes once you get off the phone. âthey should be here in about... well, soon i hopeâ
âcoolâ, is all vernon says before silence envelops you both again. you walk up and take a seat in one of the lecture hall chairs up front.Â
âwhat are you working on?â, you ask vernon, in an attempt to make conversation because the awkward atmosphere in the air right now is killing you.
âjust the assignment for the studentsâ, he replies and you nod. ârightâ, you reply, fidgeting with your hands and fingers, trying to find some sort of distraction or thing to ground yourself back to reality.Â
you both stay quiet and time drags on. youâre praying for security or someone to come and save you because you couldn't do this any longer.Â
youâre sitting in silence, staring at the ground, lost in your thoughts when suddenly a loud sound erupts, jolting and scaring you and you end up knocking your ankle on the table leg and you yelp in pain.Â
you hear some voices outside the door and realize it must be security as they tried to forcefully open the door. vernon glances over at you.
âare you okay?â, he asks, standing up, looking a little concerned.
ây-yeah iâm fineâ, you tell, waving your hand so he wouldnât come closer, mostly embarrassed and desperately trying to convince him you werenât a klutz.
once the door is successfully open, you almost make a run for it and make it back to your office, out of breath, suddenly rethinking your life choices and cursing. once safely inside, you collapse into your chair, mentally cursing for once again making a complete fool of yourself in front of vernon. itâs only after another minute you realize you had left your novel behind - again.
once your ankle feels a bit better and isnât throbbing in pain anymore, you decide to go back to fetch your book. youâre in half a mind to just leave it there and go home because you did not want to see vernon again, not after what happened. but of course, the universe hates you and as fate would have it, you see vernon by the door of your office, holding your novel.
âhi, um you left your book back thereâ, he says as he takes a step inside.
you blink at him, then at the book, and finally manage a weak smile. âoh, silly me. thanks,â you say, taking the book, hoping your face wasnât as red as it felt.
a few days later when youâre walking through the hallways, there seems to be a buzz in the air. you spot vernon walking in the hallways, headphones in as he seems to bob his head along to whatever music was playing. you watch as a few students approach him in excitement and speak to him. he keenly takes off his headphones and listens, smiling a little and you can hear him say âthank youâ before walking off. this seems to happen a few times and youâre really starting to wonder why. you turn around as you ask your friend and fellow TA.
âwhy is everyone going up to vernon? did something happen?â, you ask, curiosity getting the better of you.
âyou didnât hear? he got first place in the hackathon competition. itâs a pretty big competition, so itâs a pretty big dealâ, they fill in.Â
âohâ, you reply. after your friend tells you. you later look up the competition and find out that it was indeed a really big deal. youâre walking to the cafe to get your daily caffeine fix when you spot a florist shop opposite the road. why not give vernon a bouquet to congratulate him? but then the second thoughts come; he wouldnât think you were weird if you gave him flowers right? but then again, you saw the other faculty gave him a plant too, so you guessed there was no harm done if you gave him some flowers. so thatâs how youâre walking back to your office with a small bouquet of flowers in your hand.Â
(expect no one told you that that he was allergic to flowers and you were blissfully unaware of what chaos you were about to cause)
just as you were about to enter the lobby, you notice vernon walking towards the building from the opposite direction and for some reason, your heart skips a beat. his hair is a little messy today, but falls cutely over his forehead.
âvernon!â, you call out and he looks up, surprised to see you as he eyes the flowers in your hands.
âheyâ, he asks and you smile before you notice the way he was keeping a small distance between you both.Â
âcongratulations on winning the hackathon! i thought you might like these, something for your winâ, you say as you extend your hand out, holding out a small bouquet of flowers to him.
vernon eyes the bouquet, his expression shifting from surprised to slightly worried as he tries to maintain his composure as he reaches out to take the bouquet from you.
âoh, um, thanks. theyâre really... niceâ, he says to you and you beam, happy that he likes them.
but before vernon could say anything further, a sneeze erupts from himâloud and dramatic. he quickly tries to stifle it, but he sneezes again, and again and again.
âoh my gosh, are you okay?â, you ask, worried about the way he was sneezing all of a sudden.
vernon tries to wave off your concern, but the flowers were making it worse. his attempts to hide his discomfort were futile as he let out another series of sneezes.
âi-iâm fine! just a bit of⊠pollen...â he says before he sneezes again and your eyes widen in realization.
âoh my god, youâre allergic to flowers??â, you ask, reaching for the bouquet and nearly plucking it out of his hand, placing it on the bench that was nearby, hoping that the distance would make him feel better before you turn to face him again.
âiâm so sorry, i didnât know you were allergic to flowersâ, you say, mortified, your cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Â
vernon manages to find some tissues in his pocket and dabs his nose, managing to give you a weak smile.
âitâs alrightâ, he says, waving his hand in the air.Â
âwhat do you mean itâs alright?â you repeat, your voice rising in panic. âno, i almost killed you! oh my god, iâm so sorry!â you tell, horrified.Â
âitâs the thought that counts really. just maybe... no more flowers?â, he says through sniffles and you nod your head vigorously.Â
âof course, iâll get you something elseâ, you add in a rush and vernon sneezes once more. you offer to grab him a coffee or something to help him recover from the unexpected pollen assault.
âhow about i get you some coffee? i feel terrible about thisâ, you ask, biting the bottom of your lip in nervousness as you look at vernon with a hopeful look in your eyes. vernon, now recovering, manages to chuckle between sneezes.Â
âcoffee sounds goodâ, he says, sniffling, his sneezes seeming to have gotten under control.Â
âagain, iâm so sorryâ, you tell, feeling bad about the incident earlier. it felt like the universe had a personal vendetta against you whenever you interacted with vernon.
âno worries, iâm all good nowâ, he says, giving you a small reassuring smile that seems to ease your heart. you get vernon his coffee and walk back to the university, both of you walking in silence now.Â
âagain iâm so so sorryâ, you repeat, still feeling bad about earlier, your voice filled with genuine regret. Â
âitâs really not a big deal,â he reassures you again. âiâm just glad it wasnât worse. some people are really sensitive to that stuffâ, he says. the silence between you now feels more comfortable, a mutual understanding hanging in the air. you appreciate his easy going nature and feel a bit of the tension melting away.
unbeknownst to you, vernon had taken the bouquet of flowers back to his office, carefully placing it in the corner of his room. even though he was still sneezing occasionally, he couldnât bring himself to toss the flowers away. each time vernon glanced at the bouquet, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips, being reminded of you.Â
a week later, as youâre wrapping up your day and heading out of the university. through the glass window of his door, you catch a glimpse of him sitting at his desk, rubbing his temple with a look of evident stress. concern nudges at you, and you decide to stop and check in on him.
you peek your head into the room. âhey, not heading out yet?â you ask, your voice gentle but curious. vernon looks up from his laptop, his eyes finding yours as he lets out a small sigh.
âno, iâm still here,â he replies, frustration evident in his tone. âiâm trying to figure out why this website keeps crashing.â
you step inside, curiosity piqued. âwebsite?â you prompt, your mind quickly connecting the dots. you remembered that vernon does freelance work on the side, a detail you found impressive and one that explained why he carried his laptop practically everywhere.Â
âyeah,â he continued, frustration clear in his voice. âitâs this website that crashes whenever too many users try to access it at once.â
you nod thoughtfully, drawing on your own experience. âyou know, maybe you should take a break. sometimes when i get stuck on a piece of writing, stepping away and coming back to it later helps me see things more clearlyâ, you say.
you watch as vernon nods slowly, as he considers your suggestion, a small smile of appreciation flickering across his face. âyeah, i guess youâre right.â, he replies as he closes his laptop with a resigned click, and begins to pack up his bag. you both walk out of the office together, the weight of the day lifting slightly with each step.Â
you could sense that vernon was a bit tense, perhaps still unwinding from a long day or just not fully at ease because of the problem he couldn't solve earlier. the silence between you was starting to feel a bit heavy, and you wanted to lighten the mood. you racked your brain for something to break the ice. but you didnât know what to say, not wanting to say anything silly again so you kept quiet.
âwell, i hope you can solve that issue soon!â, you tell after a few seconds of silence and he nods. âme tooâ.
the next day, you decide to take a little break before your office hours and head out, deciding to grab a coffee. youâre armed with the copy of two books, one that you were reading for class and another that you were reading on your own. youâre about to turn the corner when you bump into vernon - again.
âwoahâ, he says, just like the first time, still cool as a cucumber.
âshit, iâm sorryâ, you tell, laughing softly. âno worriesâ, he says, his eyes falling on the two books in your hands.Â
âyou seem to always be in a rushâ, he tells, adjusting his cap on his head. âi guess my mind is always racing and my feet somehow follow thatâ, you tell, joking and he nods again. it was like that was his default reaction.
âoh, by the way, i managed to fix that issueâ, he tells, his face seeming to light up when he spoke to you this time.
âthe one where the website kept crashing?â, you prompt and he nods. you start walking in the direction of the cafe and he follows beside you.
âthatâs great, what was the issue?â, you ask, completely oblivious of all the technical terms that vernon was about to use.
âit turns out that the issue was with how i was managing the server resources. i had to optimize the code that handles incoming requests and i found this bottleneck where the server was getting overloaded, so i streamlined the processâ, he explains and you furrow your brows as you try to make sense of what he was saying but who were you kidding, you had no idea what he was talking about.
âoh, that soundsâŠchallengingâ, you tell, hoping it didnât sound like you were an idiot somehow.
âkind of, but i monitored the server's performance metrics and analyzed the logs and i was able to figure out where the issue was. once i made those tweaks, the website started handling traffic like a pro and didnât crash anymoreâ, he tells proudly and you nod along.
âwoah, thatâs impressiveâ, you add, giving him a thumbs up as you walk, hoping it didnât seem obvious that you didnât really understand what he just told you and the only thing you actually managed to understand was that he solved the issue.
he turns to glance at you and the confusion is clear on your face as you nod along and praise him. he looks down and smiles to himself before looking back up at you, finding this whole situation funny and maybe a little cute because of you.
âyou didnât understand a word i said did you?â, he prompts and you feel the tips of your ears getting red out of embarrassment. âi did..i-i understood that you solved itâ, you tell quickly. but you give in after a few seconds. âokay fine, i have no idea what you said but whatever it was, it sounds impressiveâ, you confess.
âitâs basically like having a rush hour at a store and thereâs not enough staff to help aroundâ, he starts off, explaining it to you in more simple terms. âso i had to make a code that handles requests run smoother. i also found a spot where everything was getting stuck, like a traffic jam. once i fixed it, it was like organizing a line so everyone gets their food faster without bumping into each otherâ, he tells and you nod in understanding this time.
âoh wow, thatâs cool, that makes so much senseâ, you repeat, impressed.
you reach the cafe and step inside, vernon beside you. you order a latte and ask vernon if he wants anything but he denies. so you just wait for your drink and he waits with you.
âhow are you liking being a TA so far?â, he asks as he meets your gaze, adjusting the usual blue cap on his head.
âi think itâs going well, i have a knack for teaching you knowâ, you say with a small smile, happy. âiâm enjoying it, though sometimes it does test my patience a littleâ, you add and he chuckles as he nods along in understanding.
you grab your coffee when itâs ready and you both walk back to class, parting ways in the hallway as you head to your lecture and vernon to his.
itâs after office hours and the hallways were quieter. youâre making your way towards the library, the weight of your laptop bag and a stack of books pulling on your shoulders as you walk. your notebook and pens were carefully balanced in one hand. you spot vernon walking down and you give him a small wave when you reach closer. he stops, giving you a small nod of acknowledgement as he takes in the books and laptop youâre carrying, or lugging around again.Â
âgoing somewhere?â he asks, his tone casual but with an underlying hint of curiosity.
âyeah,â you reply, adjusting the stack of books so they don't topple over. âiâm heading to the library to finish up some work.â vernonâs eyes follow you as you speak. âcool,â is all he says, his usual nonchalant reply that seemed to be his standard for everything.
you continue on your way to the familiar space of the library, navigating through the shelves and pathways to find your favorite spot - it was hidden in the back, right next to the window and was the perfect cozy spot to study, read or just hide in fact. you set down your laptop and open up your notebook to plan your next lecture and assignment. you open your laptop and are ten minutes into your work session when you hear the soft patter of footsteps approaching. you glance behind, eyes widening when you see who was stepping into your little hideaway.
you donât expect to see vernon there. it was a rare and almost jarring sight; vernon and the library didnât seem to mix well. his usual hangout was more likely the the local coffee shop or staying holed up in his own office, definitely not the library. you hesitate, caught off guard by this unexpected encounter. vernon looks at you and thereâs a hint of something in his eyes.
âheyâ, you say softly, trying to keep your tone casual despite the curiosity lingering inside you. âdidnât expect to see you hereâ.Â
vernon shrugs, his relaxed demeanor unshaken. âyeah, i guess i needed a change of scenery.â he shifts on his feet, his eyes glancing over the empty space next to you. you reach out and bring your books to your side of the table.
âyou can join me if you wantâ, you add and vernon nods, taking a seat next to you. âthanksâ, he says, placing his laptop down before opening it and getting to work. it was strange, trying to focus on your work while sharing the space with someone who seemed so out of place here. the silence between you both was punctuated only by the rustling of pages by you and the soft but steady clacking of vernon typing away on his laptop.
you lift your head up and peek into what he was doing too curious for your own good, only to see him effortlessly writing some code. in your eyes, it was like he was almost writing gibberish, making no sense to you whatsoever. to you, it looked like a jumble of incomprehensible characters, a stark contrast to the structured organization of your notes. but there was something so fascinating about the way he worked, and you find yourself staring into his screen for a little longer than youâd have liked before you realize, averting your eyes back to your own laptop.
after a while, you start to get sleepy. all the late night you pulled were starting to catch up to you and you felt your eyes drooping slowly, unable to concentrate or write anymore. you rest your chin on your hand as you slowly start to doze off.Â
vernon, who was engrossed in his coding, notices your struggle to stay awake when. he tries to stay focused on his work, but every so often, his eyes dart back over to you, noting how you seemed to be fighting a losing battle against sleep. he wasnât quite sure what to do so he just lets you be. in the end you seem to lose and you end up dozing off. your pen falls out of your hand, rolling onto the floor.Â
quietly, he slips out of his chair and retrieves his jacket, picking up your pen too, placing it on the table. he gently drapes his jacket over your shoulders as you sleep, hoping it would make you more comfortable. the jacket was a bit oversized, but he hoped it would do the trick. however, in his attempt to make you more comfortable, vernon found himself in a tough spot. you shift and find a new resting place - right on vernonâs shoulder. heâs caught off guard, his eyes widening in surprise as you snuggle right into his shoulder and he freezes, unsure how to react. he tries to remain still, not wanting to wake you or disrupt the surprisingly cozy situation. he makes the quiet decision to wait it out, not sure whether he should wake you up or not. he focuses back on his laptop screen, though his attention keeps drifting back to you. with the weight of your head resting on his shoulder, vernon couldn't seem to focus at all.Â
finally, after what felt like an eternity of indecision and awkwardness, you stir awake. your eyes flutter open, initially disoriented by the dim light and the unfamiliar feeling of having drifted off to sleep in the middle of your work. lifting your head from vernonâs shoulder, you blinked in surprise at the sight of him.Â
âoh, i didnât mean to fall asleepâ, you mumble as you come back to your senses. itâs only after a few seconds later that you put two and two together.
âohâŠOHâŠiâm so sorryâ, â you exclaim, rubbing your eyes and trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. âi didnât mean toââÂ
vernon doesnât say anything, though his face is still a bit flushed. âitâs alright. you looked like you needed sleep. i just wasnât expecting you to use me as a pillow.â, he says matter of factly.Â
you try to laugh it off, but your face is burning with embarrassment. âi hope i didnât sleep for longâ, you ask, unaware of how much time had passed. 15 minutes? 20 minutes?
âyou slept for almost two hoursâ, vernon fills in and your hand flies up to cover you mouth in shock. no way. you had not just slept on vernonâs shoulder for almost two hours? what was wrong with you?
âyeah, i wasnât sure if i should wake you or let you sleep. it seemed like you really needed it.â, he says like it was no big deal and you feel a wave of mortification wash over you.
âiâm so sorry for making you sit here like that. i didnât mean to make you uncomfortable.â you tell, and thatâs when you notice vernonâs jacket draped around you. you slide it off your shoulders and hand it back to vernon, but thereâs still the lingering warmth itâs left behind on your shoulders. the fabric still holds the faint scent of him, a mix of cedar and something faintly sweet.Â
you shift uncomfortably in your seat, the blush from earlier now a persistent warmth in your cheeks. âi didnât mean to make you wait so long,â you stammer, trying to regain some composure. âi must have really zonked outâ, you tell, feeling bad about having our vernon in an awkward position. âitâs alright,â he says. âsometimes you just need a good napâ.Â
the next morning is bright and clear, but you canât shake the feeling of awkwardness from the previous day. the campus buzzes with its usual mix of students rushing between classes and professors hurrying to meetings. you on the other hand are mentally preparing for a day full of avoiding vernonâmostly because youâre still embarrassed about falling asleep on him.Â
but your plan goes down the drain the moment you see vernon. youâre about to turn around but his gaze finds you before you can, and turning around now would make it seem like you were actually running away. instead, you slow down and he makes his way towards you. heâs dressed in his usual laid-back attireâjeans and a university hoodie.Â
âmorningâ, he says once heâs close enough and you give him a friendly smile. âmorning,â you mumble, avoiding eye contact. vernon, unfazed by your clear attempt to escape a conversation, continues talking.
âdid you sleep well?â, he asks and you swear there was almost a hint of humor in the way he asked it.Â
âoh, uh, yeah, great,â you stammer, trying to sound calm and collected. âi slept really wellâ, you say, giving him a thumbs up before mentally cringing, forcing your hands down. vernon chuckles, the sweet sound of his laughter filling the air between you both. he smiles at you and you swear your heart almost skips a beat, two maybe, before he speaks again.
âiâm just teasing youâ, he adds, the corners of his mouth still lifted up into a smile and you feel your cheeks heat up as you blink at him. âsee you aroundâ, he adds, before walking ahead, leaving you behind, your heart a fluttering mess.
the next week you, when youâre walking down the hallway, you spot vernon. but you didnât expect him to look so good. he was wearing a light baby blue hoodie, his dark hair was tousled in that effortlessly cute way. but the thing that made you do a double take was the pair of glasses he was wearing. they sat perched on his nose, framing his eyes in a way that was somehow both endearing and charming, making him look adorable. for a moment, you canât tear your gaze away. your heart skips a beat and itâs like your brain short circuited and stopped working for a second because the next thing you know, youâre walking right into the wall instead of turning the corridor. the sudden impact jolts you back to reality, and you blink, staring at the blank wall in surprise.Â
you turn around to see vernonâs amused, but also concerned, his glasses perched at just the right angle to make his eyes twinkle. he waves at you, closing the gap between you both. shit, vernon didnât see you walk into the wall right? he totally did.
âare you okay?â he asked, clearly trying to stifle a laugh.
you could feel your cheeks flush as you rub the spot where youâd collided with the wall. âyeah, iâm fine,â you manage to reply, trying to regain some semblance of composure.Â
âjust a little distracted, no big deal.â, you tell, trying to play it off. a smile still tugs at the corners of vernonâs lips. âi-i should goâ, you tell, turning around and walking away, mentally preparing to dig your own grave and bury yourself because why did you have to be such an idiot in front of vernon.
âwell, watch where youâre goingâ, he calls out as he watches you walk away.Â
after office hours you decide to retreat to the familiar space of the library again. somehow being surrounded by books always seemed to ease your mind. on your way to library, you bump into vernon, his laptop tucked under his arm like always. he, in fact, had been looking for you. heâd dropped by your office but when he didnât find you there, he thought you had gone home. but he decided to scan the library once since knew you spent a lot of time here as well. his eyes light up when he spots you here in your usual spot.
âhiâ, vernonâs voice floats in, making you look up to see him. âh-heyâ, you say, caught off guard by his presence again, the events of last evening flashing through your mind. âmind if i join you again?â, he asks and you shake your head, indicating he could sit. you both settle down at the back corner of the library, occupying a small table. you open up the book, the one you were re-reading for the nth time. you bring out your sticky notes and pens, ready to make notes and mark important points or quotes from the book since this was a book that was assigned for class reading.Â
vernon opens up his laptop and starts working on trying to debug the code for a program he was building. you both work in silence, vernon typing away on his laptop while you read the book, making notes. after almost 30 minutes, vernon stretches and looks over at you, admiring the way you were engrossed in the book you were reading. he could see the expressions you made as you read - a soft smile when something funny was happening or the way your brows furrowed when something intense was happening. he thought it was cute.Â
you seem to notice his gaze on you and look up. you glance at the time and decide to take a break too, closing your book.Â
âwhat are you up to?â, you ask, recalling what you saw on his screen yesterday. âyou were like writing a million lines of code the other dayâ, you tell and he nods. âyeah, iâm debugging this programâ, he explains.
âhowâs it going?â, you ask, leaning forward. âi think iâve almost solved itâ, he says, satisfied.
"don't you ever get tired of reading the same book over and over?" he asks after a few seconds of silence, genuine curiosity lighting up his face. you pause for a moment, considering his question. it wasn't the first time someone had asked you this.
"never" you say, a smile spreading across your face. "in fact, it's quite the opposite.whenever i re-read a book, it's like going on a treasure hunt and every time i re-read the pages, i uncover something new, stumble upon details i missed before, and uncover deeper meanings.", you start to explain.
vernon leaned back in his chair, his curiosity piqued, and you continued to speak.
you grab the well worn copy of the book you were reading and hold it out to show vernon. "take this book for example. each time i read it, i connect with the characters in a different wayâ, you add on.
he nods, his eyes reflecting understanding. "so, it's like the book grows with you," he says, intrigued by your perspective.
"exactly!" you reply, nodding eagerly.
âand iâve been thinking about how programming and literature seem like polar opposites at first glance, but actually have some similaritiesâ, you tell, suddenly overcome with passion and vernon watches the way your eyes light up as you explain your theory to him.Â
âyou just think about itâboth fields involve decoding and interpreting systems, just in different forms. for you,itâs deciphering algorithms and building code and for me it's analyzing and breaking down a characters' motivations and feelingsâ, you tell.
vernon nods as you talk, taking it all in. âthat's an interesting way to put it, i never thought of it that wayâ, vernon says as your words sink in. âand the best part? thereâs creativity in bothâ, you add like the cherry on top. as you continue, the flow of conversation feels so natural that you donât immediately realize youâre starting to ramble.Â
âit's fascinating how different disciplines can share common ground. we may approach problems from opposite ends of the spectrum, but our goals are surprisingly similarâ, he says and you smile with the way he gets you.Â
âexactly! so maybe we both arenât so different after allâ, you add, laughing softly. the enthusiasm in your voice only grows, until suddenly, you catch yourself in mid-sentence, your words faltering and growing softer until you stop speaking and you feel a flush creeping up your cheeks. âsorry, i didnât mean to bore you with all thisâ.
vernonâs expression shifts from one of engaged interest to gentle reassurance, shaking his head. âbore me? not at all. i actually find it really interesting.â
you let out a relieved sigh, feeling a bit more at ease. âreally? i just felt like i was going on and on. sometimes i get a bitâwell, you know, enthusiastic about these things.âÂ
you glance at the time on your phone before looking back up at vernon. âwanna take a break and grab some coffee?â, you ask and he nods. âsureâ
there was just something about vernon that made you look around for him in the hallways as you stole glances at him. maybe it was the way he was so cool, calm and collected unlike you - a mess.
Â
a few months pass and you and vernon slowly get closer, talking more, hanging out more and it was like you were slowly bringing vernon out of his shell. you got to know a completely different side to him and he was fun, sweet and really cute as well. Â
âhave you noticed how vernon is acting so differently these days?â, one of his students say. âyeah, you know the other day i saw him in the library!â, the other one explains.
âwhat? thatâs insaneâ, the other student fills in. âthereâs something definitely up. i remember him telling me that the wifi in the library was shitty so he didnât like to work thereâ, the other student adds on.Â
âoh my godâ, the second student tells as realization dawns. âwhat?â, the other two ask.
âi think vernon has a crush on the english TAâ, they say. âwait, thatâs so cute. that would make sense. iâve seen them hanging out a lot and heâs been acting different too. heâs not holed up at his desk like before and i swear he smiles more when heâs talking with the english TAâ, the first student adds.
vernon never expected to be so intrigued by someone like you. he was a computer science major, someone who thrived on structure and logic. but then there was you, an english literature major, always in some world or another, lugging around books everyday like it was nothing. despite their differences, he couldn't help but feel drawn to you. you seemed to have entered his life, bringing a whirlwind of chaos and charm.
youâre helping a student, because shakespeare was proving to be difficult for some students. âif you need more help on how to structure the essay, let me know, i can give you some guidelinesâ, you explain to the student in front of you.Â
âmiss yn, i think vernon has a crush on youâ, your students says, making you snap your head up because how did vernon suddenly come up?
âwhat? donât be ridiculousâ, you tell but your student just gives you a look.
âiâm serious! you know he never used to wander around the halls much, but ever since you joined, he has. he hangs out with you alotâ, your student adds.
âthatâs because weâre good friendsâ, you correct, giving them a look, but it was like they knew better.
âand heâs totally crushing on you, my friend does computer science and she can read all the signsâ, your student explains further.Â
âwhat signs?â, you ask, confused. âthat heâs crushing on you. heâs hanging out with you, he smiles more often, heâs not wearing hoodies all the time and heâs hanging out in the library with you? he is totally crushing on you miss ynâ, your student explains and suddenly you find yourself at a loss for words.
âmaybe if you put this much effort in your essay youâd score higher marksâ, you tell with a straight face, bringing the attention back to the topic at hand. you student only seems to sigh in defeat.Â
âyou both would make a really cute couple you knowâ, you student tells with a small chuckle as they walk out, leaving you shy but also wonderingâŠdid vernon really have a crush on you?
the idea of something like that seemed impossible. you both were so similar yet so different so the idea that he might like you, the possibility that he might have a crush on you stirred something in your heart. it would be a lie to deny that you didnât like him or have developed a small crush on him too. but the thought that he might feel the same way? thatâs something you hadnât seriously considered until now.
tonight you find yourself staying late again to grade the papers that were given last week. vernon stood hesitantly outside the office door, his hand hovering over the handle as he took a deep breath to steady himself. he wasn't used to feeling nervousâusually, he was the calm and cool guy who approached situations with a quiet confidence. but tonight was different - he was nervous. summoning his courage, vernon knocked softly on your door, his heart beating a little faster than usual.
you looked up, surprised yet pleasantly so, as vernon entered. your smile widened at the sight of him, a welcomed interruption from the monotony of grading.
âi heard you were working late and bought some snacksâ, he says, holding up a bag of food and you smile at the thoughtful gesture.Â
âyouâre a lifesaver, i was actually so hungryâ, you tell as vernon opens the bag and hangs you a pack of chips, which surprisingly in your favorite flavor. you take it, telling him a small thank you as vernon takes a seat in front. his eyes wander to the papers on your desk.
âtough class?â, he asks. âyeah but itâs rewarding in a wayâ, you tell as you bite on a chip and chew.
âdo you have lots of paperâs left to grade?â, he asks, looking at the stack, feeling unsure because his plans might fall through otherwise.
âoh, just two more actually, those are all doneâ, you tell, following his gaze and he looks relieved.
âiâll wait for you, we can head out togetherâ, he says and you smile softly, nodding your head before you get back to grading your papers. vernon watches at you grade the papers in concentrations, your brows furrowed slightly as you read through the essays your students had written, your pen marking places that were good, or need improvement.Â
once you finish, you pack up your things and you're walking with vernon outside as he offers to walk you to the bus stop. youâre mind wanders to vernon and what you students were telling you earlier. was it that obvious you had a crush on vernon? you briefly glance at him before looking down at your feet, feeling your nerves rise up. you reach the bus stop and you both are standing there. vernon looks at you, noticing your distant expression, like something was weighing on your mind.Â
âeverything alright?â he asks, slightly concerned.Â
you snap back to the present, giving him a slightly awkward but genuine smile. âoh, yeah, everythingâs fine. just... thinking about stuff.â, you say as you dig your hands in the pocket of your coat.
vernon raises an eyebrow but doesnât press further. âwell, if you need to talk about anything or if you just want to grab a coffee and chat, let me know.â
you nod, a smile playing on your lips. âsure, that sounds nice. iâll definitely take you up on that offerâ, you reply as you see your bus come. as you sit in the bus, you canât help but replay vernonâs words in your head. did he mean that as a friend or something more?Â
as you spend more time with vernon, both of you spending more time hanging out in the library, you start to notice the subtle changes in your feelings, how your heart flutters a little more each time vernon flashes that easygoing smile of his or how you look forward to those quiet moments spent with him in the library. the more you get to know him, the more you appreciate the effortless way he balances his laid-back demeanor with a genuine interest in your thoughts and feelings. Â
as vernon spends more time with you in the library, he canât help but notice how his feelings have evolved from casual admiration to something more. heâs used to being reserved and laid-back, but youâve managed to stir something in him that he didnât quite expect. your energy is infectious, and despite his usually reserved nature, he finds himself drawn to you more and more.Â
seungkwan leaned forward in his chair at the cafĂ©, taking a hearty bite of his sandwich. his eyes flicked up at vernon, who was sitting across from him with just an iced americano.Â
âso, howâs the TA thing going?â seungkwan asks, his mouth still half-full. he was genuinely curious about how things were unfolding for his friend. heâd considered becoming a TA too, but he didnât think he had the patient to teach.
âitâs going good,â vernon replies, taking a sip of his drink and meeting seungkwanâs gaze. he tries to sound nonchalant, but there was a subtle shift in his demeanor, a lightness that seungkwan couldnât quite place.
âwho was the person with you earlier? the one you were chatting with?â, seungkwan prods.
âoh,â vernon said, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. âtheyâre another TA at the university.â
seungkwan raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued at the information. âyou guys see each other a lot then?â
vernonâs smile grows a little wider, though he tries to keep his tone casual. âyeah, we hang out pretty often. theyâre fun to be around.â
seungkwan doesnât miss the way vernonâs eyes soften when he mentions you. his curiosity is piqued and he leans in slightly, his grin widening as he sets down his sandwich, wiping his hand with a tissue. âfun, huh? you donât usually talk about people like thatâ, seungkwan says as he looks at vernon with that look in his eyes, like he knew something more.
vernon hesitated, his fingers idly tracing the rim of his glass. âwell, theyâre just⊠different. you know? they make everything feel a bit more⊠lively. itâs a nice change from my usual routine.â
seungkwanâs grins wider and he gives vernon a look. âsounds like someoneâs got a bit of a crush. iâve never seen you talk about anyone like this before.â
vernonâs eyes widen at seungkwanâs statement, caught off guard by his words. he clears his throat, trying to regain his composure. âitâs not like that. i just⊠enjoy their companyâ, vernon defends, but really, itâs no use against seungkwan.
seungkwan chuckles. âsure, sure. iâm just saying. iâve seen you deal with enough spreadsheets and code to know when someoneâs making a difference. you seem happier these days.â
thereâs a hint of a smile still lingering on vernonâs face. âi guess you could say that.â
the conversation shifted to other topics, but vernonâs thoughts lingered on you. seungkwanâs observations were spot on, despite his attempts to keep things casual, he had to admit that you had brought a spark of excitement and unpredictability into his life. and as he looked at seungkwan, he realized that maybe, just maybe, there was something more to these encounters than he had originally thought.
itâs the final week of classes before summer break rolls in. the campus is abuzz with students rushing to finish assignments and prepare for exams. youâve been swamped with work, grading papers and wrapping up last-minute things. by the time you finally pack up and leave the office, the sun has dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the campus.
the campus, usually lively with students and faculty, has quieted down. you walk briskly towards the exit, your thoughts occupied with a mix of relief and anticipation for the summer break. you could really use a break. as you step outside, you spot a familiar figure standing by the edge of the path, bathed in the soft light of a nearby lamp post - vernon.
he stands there with his hands shoved into his jacket pockets, his posture relaxed as he stands there. as soon as his eyes meet yours, his face breaks into a warm, welcoming smile.
âhey,â he calls out, his voice carrying easily across the still evening air.
âhey,â you reply, walking towards him. âwhat are you doing here?â
âi was just⊠waiting for you,â he says, a touch of uncertainty creeping into his voice. âi thought iâd see if you wanted to grab a coffee or something before you head back home. i know things have been pretty hectic with the end of the semester and all.â
you nod, giving him a smile at his thoughtfulness. itâs moments like these that make your heart skip a beat, and you realize that the time for the conversation youâve been dreading is now. youâve been meaning to ask vernon out for weeks, but each time you gathered the courage, you found yourself faltering, your intentions falling short of actual words.
but the idea of not seeing him over the summer, of leaving things as they are, feels unbearable. you donât have it in you to wait that long. the thought of waiting until after the break, when youâll have more time to analyze, second-guess, and overthink would drive you crazy instead. so youâve decided that tonight is the night. as you both walk together towards the coffee shop, the casual conversation flows easily, but you canât shake the knot of nervous anticipation in your stomach. vernon orders the coffee, his calm energy making you feel a bit more at ease.
as you wait for your drinks, the silence between you seems charged with unspoken words. vernon looks over at you, a curious expression on his face. âsomething on your mind?â, he prompts and you shake your head in a hurry, feeling nervous all of a sudden. itâs only after you finish your coffee and youâre walking back that you finally pluck up the courage to ask him.
âhey vernonâ, you start, your voice bright but slightly hesitant. he looks up at you, eyebrows raised in curiosity, clearly waiting for you to continue. you fidget with your hands, then look up at him, trying to meet his gaze directly.
âi was wondering if you were free sometime next week? we could grab dinner or something?â, you ask, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as the words tumble out of your mouth. you can see the surprise and curiosity in vernonâs eyes as he processes what youâve just said.
âme?â, he asks as he points to himself. you let out a soft laugh, trying to ease the awkwardness. âyes, you, silly. who else?â you say, letting out a nervous smile. you felt your cheeks warm up as you waited for him to answer.Â
ohâŠwait was yn asking me out?
âoh umâŠâ, vernonâs eyes widened, and he suddenly seemed very interested in the cement footpath, his gaze darting around, flickering everywhere but you as he shifts from foot to foot, looking anywhere but directly at you, trying to process what you just asked.
âiâm not sure, i might be busyâ, he finally says, but he doesnât miss the way your smile seems to fall off your face. you try to keep your tone upbeat despite the slight disappointment. âoh, okay. no worries,â you say, trying to sound casual. had you just been rejected?Â
you go home, feeling embarrassed because what if vernon would avoid you now? youâd hate that and maybe you were starting to think you shouldn't have asked him out on that dinner offer. had you just blown things between you both? maybe youâd misunderstood his feelings after all.Â
vernon sat opposite seungkwan, but his attention was somewhere else. seungkwan, his friend, was chatting animatedly about something that vernon was barely registering.
âvernon? are you even listening to me?â seungkwanâs voice floats in, shaking vernon from his thoughts.
âhuh? yeah, iâm listening,â vernon replies, as he tries to focus his attention back on seungkwan.
seungkwan narrows his eyes. âwhat was i talking about?â he challenges, clearly not buying vernonâs half-hearted attention.
vernonâs mouth opened and closed as he scrambles to recall the conversation, but nothing came to mind. âuh⊠i, umâŠâ he stammers, looking sheepish.
âyou okay? you seem really lost,â seungkwan probed.
vernon sighs and looks down, a bit embarrassed as he rubs the back of his neck in nervousness. âyou know that TA i told you about? they asked me if i was free next week to have dinnerâ, vernon slowly explains.
seungkwanâs eyes widen in surprise. âso, what did you say?â seungkwan asks in anticipation.
vernon only shrugs, âi wasnât sure, so i told them i might be busyâ
seungkwanâs jaw drops in disbelief upon hearing his friendâs words. âWHAT?â he almost yells, startling vernon. âdude, they were totally asking you out!â, seungkwan says and he was practically vibrating with excitement.
vernonâs mouth formed a small âOâ as realization hit him. âoh,â he said quietly, as it dawned on him.
seungkwanâs frustration seemed to escalate. âare you kidding me? they asked you out on a date, and you what? you said that were busy? oh my godâ, seungkwan exclaims dramatically at his friend's cluelessness.
âi didnât know they meant it like that,â vernon defends, his face flushing with embarrassment.
âyouâre an idiot, thatâs what you are, an idiotâ,â seungkwan mutters, shaking his head in disappointment and disbelief. âyou better go on that date man, seriously.â, seungkwan threatens as he points at vernon with a mix of exasperation and encouragement.
âyeah, iâll think about it, i guessâ vernon mumbles, his mind already racing. âthereâs no thinking, youâre going and itâs finalâ, seungkwan says like he had the final say in the matter, looking vernon up and down, baffled at his friendâs idiocy.Â
that night, as vernon lay in bed, he couldnât shake off the nagging feeling that he had missed a golden opportunity. every time he replayed the conversation in his head, he felt like a complete fool. the more he thought about it, the more he realized just how much he wanted to go on that date with you.
âiâm such an idiot,â he mutters to himself, tossing and turning as images of you flashed through his mind. the more he thought about you, the clearer it became: he definitely wanted to go on that dinner date with you.
by morning, vernon is determined and he would figure out a way to make it up to you. but as classes go on, vernon canât seem to focus on anything. he couldn't stop thinking about you.
the hours dragged by, each minute stretching longer than the last as vernon tried to get through his lectures and office hours. every time he glanced at the clock, he felt a pang of urgency. finally, when the last class was over, he packed up his things with an unusual sense of determination.
as he made his way across campus, his mind raced. he had no idea what he was going to say, but he knew he couldnât let the opportunity slip away. he spots you just outside the university building, chatting with a couple of friends. his heart pounds as he approaches you, the sound of his footsteps seeming louder than usual.
âhey, vernon!â you greet, your voice warm with familiarity. your friends took the cue and started to drift away, saying they had to head to the other department, leaving you both alone.
âhey, umâŠâ vernon began, his voice shaky but filled with resolve. âcan i talk to you for a second?â he asks, a hopeful glint in his eyes.
youâre still bummed about last nightâs rejection, unsure of what vernon might say. âsure, whatâs up?â
vernon took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. âabout last nightâŠâ he starts, fumbling with his words, glancing around as if seeking reassurance from the familiar surroundings. âi was thinking about what you asked me, and, um-â, he starts but you cut him off, a hint of nervousness creeping into your voice.
âitâs okay if you donât want to,â you blurt out quickly, trying to mask your own anxiety. you were suddenly aware of the awkward tension between you both and wanted to avoid making things worse. âi mean, you donât have to feel pressured or anything. weâre going to be seeing each other a lot, soâ, you say, the nerves getting to you.
vernon blinks at you, looking even more confused. âwait, what?â, he asks, his brows knitted together as he tries to make sense of your words.
you sigh, feeling your cheeks grow even hotter as you scramble to find the right words. âi know i asked you out, and i totally understand if youâre not interested or if you feel weird about it. i just donât want you to feel like you have to say yes becauseââ you trail off, suddenly feeling defeated.
vernonâs confusion only deepens. âactually, i came to say yesâ, vernon finally says and you lift your head up to look at him. âyes to the dinner dateâ, he adds and your eyes widen in surprise.
âwait, really?â, you ask as you continue to look at him.
âyeah, really,â vernon affirms, a shy smile tugging at the corners of his lips.Â
âohâ, is all you can say, the word coming out in a surprised whisper before you let out a nervous laugh.
vernon chuckles along, rubbing the back of his neck as if to chase away his own nerves.Â
âyeah, i was kind of an idiot about it, but iâm glad weâre on the same page now.â he adds bashfully.
you try to hide the smile on your face, but you canât help it and a small smile grows on your face at his confession. the awkward atmosphere between you both is replaced with relief.
âso, itâs a date then?â vernon asks, his tone playful as he raises an eyebrow.
you nod, feeling a little shy but also excited. âyes, itâs definitely a dateâ, you reply, feeling a wave of warmth wash over you and vernonâs grin widens as he nods his head along to your words, meeting your gaze and smiling even wider.Â
it had been almost two months since you and vernon began dating, and things had turned out to be quite charming. the students seemed to love the idea of you two being together, some even going so far as to place bets on whether or not youâd end up as a couple or not. the playful speculation had become a running joke, and you couldnât help but laugh at how obvious you both must have been about your feelings.
âsee, i told you vernon had a crush on you,â one of your students chimes in during office hours. you roll your eyes, trying to maintain a professional demeanor.
âplease finish your essay on time, no more deadline extensions,â you say, trying to steer the conversation back to academic matters.
âbut you guys are really cute together,â your student adds, and you couldnât help but smile softly.
âalright, arenât you going to be late for class?â you ask, glancing at the time. as the student hurried out, you spent the rest of the day preparing notes for the next lecture, enjoying the quiet solitude of your office.
later, as you nestled into your favorite corner of the libraryâa spot youâd claimed as your own hiding placeâvernon appears at the entrance. his eyes scan the room before landing on you with a grin.
âi thought i might find you here,â vernon says proudly, his voice carrying a mix of amusement and affection.
âmy hiding spot has been busted,â you declare dramatically, making a show of pretending to be disappointed.
vernon chuckles at your antics. âi think if you were given permission, youâd practically live here.â
âmaybe,â you said with a playful glint in your eye. âthe idea doesnât sound all that bad. donât tempt me.â, you prompt and vernon only laughs more.
âwell, itâs a good thing iâm here to keep you company. howâs the work coming along?â
you pat the empty space beside you. âbetter now that youâre hereâ.
vernon settles next to you. âjust promise you wonât fall asleep againâ, vernon asks and you look at him, feigning offense.Â
âitâs called taking a power napâ, you defend and he laughs.Â
âyeah, just donât use me as a pillow because last time you drooled on my shirtâ, he says, making you give him a look.
âi did not!â, you retort. âyou totally did, i took a picture as proofâ, he says.Â
âyeah right, youâre lyingâ, you say, rolling your eyes.
âwanna bet?â vernon asks as he pulls out his phone, flipping through his photos with an air of mischief. âhere it is.â he shows you a blurry, yet unmistakable photo of you snoozing peacefully, a small droplet evident on his shirt.
you feel your cheeks heat up and you swat his phone playfully âyouâre the worst. i was just trying to get a bit of restâ, you tell.Â
âfine, iâll make it up to you,â you say after a few seconds, your eyes sparkling with an idea as you looked at him.
vernon raised an eyebrow as he glanced at you. âhow?â
without missing a beat, you lean in and plant a soft kiss on his cheek. for a moment, vernonâs entire body went still. his eyes widened in surprise, and he gulped down his nerves, trying to process what had just happened.
âwhat was that?â he finally managed to stammer.
you pulled back slightly, your heart racing as you tried to maintain a casual demeanor. vernonâs cheeks turn into a soft shade of pink, and he blinks, clearly caught off guard.Â
âoh, um, thanks,â he says, his voice coming out in a hesitant mumble, trying to steady his racing heart. âi wasnât expecting that.âÂ
you bury your face in your hands, trying to hide the growing blush, though you couldnât suppress the playful grin tugging at your lips. from behind your fingers, you peek through the gaps to look at vernon, who now had an almost straight, serious expression, though his eyes held a soft gaze as he looked at you.Â
âdo you want another kiss?â, you ask and he looks at you, surprised, his resolve faltering.Â
âif you want toâ, he says before he glances around the library, peeking over the shelves to make sure no one was watching. âi just donât want people thinking weâre up to scandalous things in the library,â he said, his voice dropping to a whisper.
âwe are not doing anything scandalous over here,â you say, giving his arm a playful smack. âyouâve clearly never read any romance novels, have you?â, you ask as you look at him. âthis is like the least scandalous thing we could be doing in the library right now, iâve read worse, trust meâ, you say, while vernon just looks at you with a fond gaze.Â
âalright, if you say soâ, he says. he leans in slightly, his eyes searching yours as he looks at you.
you smile softly, getting nervous. the moment felt suspended in time, and his hand found its way to your cheek, his touch both tender and reassuring. he hesitated just for a heartbeat, his thumb brushing lightly against your skin, before finally leaning in. the kiss was soft and tentative at first. his lips were warm against yours, and you could feel the faintest hint of a smile as he deepened the kiss just slightly, moving his lips against yours. you kissed him back, your fingers curling around his arm as you pressed closer.Â
when you finally parted, you both linger in the space between, and the quiet of the library seemed to embrace you both. vernonâs eyes meet yours, his expression a mix of adoration and amusement. âsee? not scandalous at all,â he whispered with a playful tone.
you laughed softly, the sound mingling with the ambient silence of the library. âdefinitely not scandalous,â you say, agreeing, your voice equally soft as you hold vernonâs gaze, warmth blooming in your cheeks.

Random reminders because I'm in a random posting mood lately
What you engage with you tolerate. That's how you say yes- engagement. The second you respond to it you give the signal you tolerate it. Attention and engagement= yes.
You have free will. You can literally just- not. You can just - fuck this shit and go. You can leave mid dentist appointment. You can just walk out on a bad date. You can just not respond to that text literally. You have free will you can literally just not. You can just ignore it. You can just delete. You can just go for a drive at 3 am. You can just cancel. You can just jump on a plane. You can just drop that course and do what you want. You can just block. Unfollow. Disengage. Say yes. Ask them out.You have both free will and an ID. Add adult money to that equation and this world is yours.
If you are not their parent don't parent them? Why are you teaching a fully grown adult basic manners what are you doing. Why are you having relationship problems with people you are not in a relationship with what even is that. If someone has an issue with you it's THEIR job to tell you they have an issue with you and yours to choose whether or not you want to do something about it? Why are you *are you mad uwu đ„ș* people if they are mad they can tell you? If not that's a them problem? At which point did you become everyone's moderator and how much are you getting paid? If it's not your child (or a child. Below 15) don't raise it?
If you're not a machine don't decode. If someone can't come at you straight that's a them problem. We respond to passive aggressiveness with literal logic. If someone wants to degrade you they have to come at you direct, not send subs ? At this big age we are still responding to sarcasm and backhanded shit. If you said you're running a bakery and uncle Andrew tries to degrade that by *oh and how much will that make* you give him actual statistics and move on. If girl *that dress is so pretty* when she means the opposite you just *I'd hope so* and move on. We don't decode underlying statements and meanings we give a literal answer and treat people like adults that mean exactly what they say. (PS, CoC has such a great video on this where they call it the child's reply method. Children don't read under they just answer. That's what we do we don't read under if someone has something to say, they say it direct).
Mind the business that pays you.
Argument is sibling and husband privilege everyone else is right and you are wrong. Stop needing people to validate your reality, trust yourself. Argument is just to feed your ego I know you know no one is changing their opinion because you *owned* them in some argument it just makes you feel like you're a big deal- get a degree it has the same effect plus credibility. Argument is sibling and husband privilege. Everyone else is right. You're wrong. You're sorry you breathed the same air as them .move on. Stop engaging your ego (and other's) and learn how to not get triggered. Your reality is real to you and you're the only person it needs to be real to. Let it go. Study if your ego needs pumping so bad. *Destroying* someone in an argument was an adolescent thing, grow up. Validate yourself and learn to trust your thoughts and feelings and interpretation of the world so you stop needing everyone to cosign to be okay. Be someone formidable so you stop needing to earn it by stepping everyone else down.
"Okay. And?" . See this statement? <- . This one right here. This, this is the one. Not even with others as much as with you. In your life. Okay he didn't text back. Okay , and? Okay you don't have enough money for it. True. And? Then what? What next ? And this is an actual question that needs a real answer not some faux bad bitch mantra. An actual answer, now what ? What then? What next?
We don't deal with problems we don't have. Here, in this house? In this house we cross that bridge when we get there, we don't anticipate there might be a bridge that we might need to cross and then we will need shoes and- stop creating problems to solve. Come back to the present. Come back to the room. Solve the problems you have now, move on. When you get there, you'll know what to do. You have adaptability and a working brain you'll be fine. You're not weak. You're not stupid. You're not a newborn. You've survived worse and there are such things a survival mechanisms that you were born with. What's the point of being stressed twice, now and then?

Enjoy!
âIn the next 500ft, turn left.â
This was going to be the third goddamn left the car navigation told you to take in the last 20 minutes. You were ninety-nine percent sure you had been going in circles and were now lost as shit at night in the middle of nowhere.Â
You glance at your phone sitting in the dash-caddy.Â
One measly bar.Â
The further you traveled, the more the service bars were dwindling as well.Â
Shit, you had 3 full bars last time you looked.
Opting to keep ahead straight instead of turning, you cross-check your destination via the spy monitoring app you had shamelessly downloaded on your boyfriend Tojiâs phone.
Tojiâs current location was 45 miles outside of the city and it had been a good 10 miles since you last saw any kind of highway. The area you were in was a mix between nature reserve and private property so not even GPS could pin down the exact directions to his whereabouts.Â
Sigh.Â
You had never wanted to be That Girlâą.Â
You know, the ones who would sneak peaks at their boyfriendâs phones, were super insecure about any interaction their man had with the opposite sex and ran down on them while they were out to catch them in the act of cheating.Â
But you were a woman at the end of her rope.
What else could you do?
For a few days every month Toji would simply disappear.Â
The various excuses he gave usually centered around his work. You didnât know exactly what he did, but you knew enough to know most of it was dangerous and wasnât what good society would consider legal. Â
Toji had scolded you before for asking too many details.Â
For your own safety.
He would say with an arrogant smirk.
But even when working you had always been able to get a hold of him after a few hours. It was just this one particular job he would completely drop off the face of the earth for. It annoyed you, sure, but Toijâs work never followed him home so you didn't have complaints. Â
That is, until you had finally moved-in with him and Megumi.
Truly, you were already like a little family.
Megumi, who had just recently started preschool, had been quick to warm up to you ever since you and Toji first introduced you to him a few months prior to that.Â
But living together pushed things to a whole other level. Megumi would follow you around like a lost pup and often opted to sit in your lap rather than Tojiâs.
Not to mention throw a near fit if you werenât the one to tuck him in goodnight. (Toji would never admit he was a bit jealous and would only grumble slightly that it was less of a hassle for him if you did it so you should just do it from now on).
You never even realized you had such a mothering instinct, being on the same page as Toji about no more kids, until you looked into those little emerald eyes of Gumiâs and absolutely melted.Â
You had grown so close that the little boy unknowingly let it slip once while Toji was MIA on that job, that he was glad Daddy went on his daddy breaks once a month so you both could have fun together by yourselves.
You tried to keep your reactions in check for Megumi but that revelation completely shook you.Â
A âdaddy breakâ didnât sound much like a work trip to you which spiked your anxiety and caused you to spiral into overthinking.Â
Did he need a break from you too as well?
You couldn't very well grill a 4-year old and you didnât have the nerve to just ask Toji straight out.Â
So you did the only thing you could think of at the time and that was to complain to your good friend Tsukumo over drinks a few days later after Toji returned.
Tsukumo, who always seemed to have the wrong answer for everything, simply told you to do the âsmartâ thing and download a monitoring app on his phone that would log is calls, texts and whereabouts.Â
You initially balked at her.
Tracking Toji had never crossed your mind.
Outside of this, Toji had never given you a reason to doubt him and you wanted to respect his privacy and trust, especially trust as you knew he didnât let many people get close to him at all.
True, he wasnât exactly the most forthcoming man you ever dated. You were well aware he had his many skeletons as well as ex-hookups. But Toji for the most part had been content with his gambling then coming home to you and Megumi.Â
He wasnât the type to ârun the streets with the boys (he had no boys tbh), you had only ever known him to have the occasional drink with Shiu when he wasnât out gambling.
You had almost refused to do such a thing⊠That is until Tsukumo posed the question:Â
Whatâs more important Y/Nâ your peace of mind or his trust?Â
And Y/N, is trust really whatâs important here at all if he is in fact already taking advantage of yours?
TouchĂ©.Â
Tsukumo had you there.
âBesides, you think that old dinosaur is even going to notice an extra app on his phone in the first place?âÂ
Tsukumo quipped, throwing back a shot of sake and jiggling the empty container at the bartender for more.
âYou just got rid of his old flip phone last year. Iâm surprised he can even use a touchscreen without punching a hole through it. Just delete the app once youâve seen what you needed to see.â
Tsukumo gave you this advice like it was the most obvious thing in the world.Â
Ignoring her digs at Tojiâs age, and maybe it was the 3 bottles of sake the both of you had blown through in the last hour, but you were starting to think she might be onto something.Â
âMmm, on second thought, might as well keep it on there. Men like Fushiguro are dogs that need to be kept on tight leashes.â
Tsukumo grinned at you with a wink before turning her attention back to the bartender.
You still didnât know then if you would actually go through with it.
Nevertheless, here you are now at 11:15 PM at night about to pull up on your boyfriend thanks to Tsukumoâs advice to find out once and for all if Toji was cheating on you.
You had dropped Megumi off at his best friend Yujiâs for the night, thanking Yujiâs parents for watching him and feeling guilty for lying to them that you and Toji had a date night.Â
Almost there.
You are within 2 miles of arriving at the vicinity of where the monitoring app says Toji is.
However, your anxieties were getting the best of you as you drove in near tears.
You turn up your music louder, the booming bass distracting you from how much darker and creepier it gets the further you drive into the wooded area.Â
Sighing again, you had no idea how this would turn out but you knew the result would determine whether you would be listening to Positions by Ariana Grande or Playing Games by Summer Walker on repeat during the drive back.Â
â
Barely a half mile later, you see the engine light of your car flash. The pungent odor of burning oil fills the car as a plume of smoke escapes out from under the hood.
Goddamn it, Toji.Â
âY/N, make sure to go get âer an oil change while Iâm gone. Ya got like 15 good miles left on âer.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Tojiâs voice rang in your mind.Â
Well the big lunk he was wrong.
You had driven at least 33 miles so far.
You mentally cussed him again.Â
Toji was the one who was supposed to change your oil, he used your car more than you did. Only opting to use his own blacked out unplated and unlicensed car for jobs like he was on now. Â
You wouldnât have even left the house if it wasnât for his sketchy cheating headass.Â
Okay, so you hadnât exactly confirmed that just yet, but you were pissed and until you confirmed otherwise, right now he was a cheater and everything about this situation was his fault.
Pulling over to the side of the dirt road before you caused further damage to your car, you weighed your options.
Option 1: Call AAA
You had zero bars though.Â
Fuck.Â
Option 2: Wait here in the safety of the car until morning.
You would still have zero bars and you might miss Toji, making this whole trip fruitless.
If he beat you home in the morning and found you gone with Megumi at Yujiâs with the sad excuse for a 'date night' lie you gave, you would never hear the end of it.
He would taunt you into oblivion that your silly ass drove all the way up here unto the woods for your car to break down cause you were too busy being a psycho bitch to remember to get an oil change.
Option 3: Walk on foot the rest of the way to Toji.
Really the only viable option you had.Â
It was a good 12 miles or so back to the highway, you didnât know how many turns you had made since then and you doubt you could make it back on foot anyway. If you were going to walk a few miles to get service again you might as well walk to where Toji was.
Sure if he wasnât cheating you would still get ridiculed, but at least you could get a ride home.Â
And if he was cheating, you would hot wire his car (one of the few useful things he did teach you) and that motherfucker and his whore could find their own way home.
Resolving yourself to walk, you put on Toji's hoodie that fortunately was still in the backseat from him last using your car to go to the gym.Â
You really should have put more thought into planning this before you left. Besides Tojiâs oversized worn hoodie that reached your mid-thighs all you were wearing was a thin white shirt and black spandex shorts.Â
You didnât even have sneakers or boots, as you looked down at your fuzzy black slippers you mostly only wore outside to run short errands like dropping off Megumi at preschool or picking up groceries.Â
Thankfully, you did have a small flashlight in the glove compartment though in case of emergencies like this.
Flashlight in tow, you step outside of your stalled car and immediately suck in a worried breath as the weight of the chilly night settles over you like a heavy cloak.
You only have a mile and a half trek but the dirt road that stretches out before you looks endless as it disappears into the obscurity of the thick shroud of fog surrounding you.Â
The flashlight doesnât do much to cut through the intense density of condensation. You had only made it a mere 20 feet from your car but you can just barely make out its faint outline.
Swallowing, you put on your bravest face and fix your gaze forward.Â
The reflections of your flashlight casts shifty patterns on the mist in your peripheral vision and you do your best to ignore the chill that creeps up your shoulders.Â
âFuck you, Toji.âÂ
You mumble half-heartedly, pulling the hood over head.
You didnât really mean it though. Would-be-cheater or not more than anything you wished he was here with you now.Â
You were freezing, tired and all you could think about was how warm and safe you would feel in Tojiâs arms. Even if you were mad at him.Â
You pick up the pace, wanting to get to him sooner.Â
Almost more unnerving than the fog itself, the forest around you is as quiet as a grave.
There are no chirps of crickets, nor hoots of owls.Â
Not even in the crisp cold of fall does the wind rustle through the trees, everything is silent.
The haunting nature around you seems to hold its breath as if it knows you're an unwelcome intruder who has trespassed too far.
You donât dare peer into the trees which look taller in the darkness, closing in tightly on the dirt road. They are ghastly silhouettes of their former selves blocking any moonlight to help guide your way.Â
You shiver as you feel as if you are being watched from a distance.
The only noise you hear is the soft crunching of rocks and leaves beneath your feet with every unsure step you take forward.Â
You canât help but feel an overwhelming sense of dread as a stray tear runs down your cheek.
You couldnât get to Toji soon enough.Â
Though you still didnât have any service the GPS updated as much as it could in roaming, you were so close.
As you continue forward a shadow on the path catches your eye in the foggy distance.Â
Your heart quickens as you inch closer, your anticipation mingling with fear.
Shapes soon begin to take form and the harsh reality dawns upon you.
A pack of wolves.Â
Their shadowy figures coalesce before you through the fog as they take stock of you.
You start to feel queasy as you see their red-stained muzzles dripping with the blood of their latest kill. The grotesque carcass of a deer practically stripped to the bone lay lifeless under their enormous paws.Â
Their eyes, fierce and predatory, meet yours with a chilling intensity as the feeble beam of your flashlight washes over them. The deer, although large, you know is not enough to quell hunger from beasts of their size.
With a shaky breath you slowly retreat, not wanting to further agitate their already aggravated predatory senses.Â
Then you hear it.
From what seems to be the darkest reaches of the night, a sound reverberates from the trees, through the forest and beyond that's unlike anything you've ever heard before.Â
The howl that tears through the stillness is so chilling you instantly feel the lamentation that carries the weight of centuries of primal power down in the very marrow of your bones.
Even the wolves snap their heads to attention and bow their heads as if the sound announced the presence of a creature much higher on the food chain... something more ancient and malevolentâŠ
...something terrifyingly unhuman.
The body racking shiver you experience is so intense it has you sprinting at full speed before your mind, frozen from fear, can even process you are moving.Â
You burst through the dense trees, leaving the road as your heart pounds like a drum in your chest and tears stream freely down your cheeks to soak the edge of Tojiâs sweatshirt.
The tangled underbrush of the forest whips the soft skin of your legs and the forest itself seems to conspire against you as you navigate the obstacle course of branches, logs and large rocks all seemingly with a mission to slow you down.
You can hear the chilling howls of the wolves you saw on the road call out behind you, giving chase.Â
The sounds of their footfalls grow closer with every passing second.
Terrifying as they are, they hold no candle against the howl that sent you running and your body continues to propel you forward.Â
Panic frazzles your senses and you make the tragic error of trying to steal a glance back behind you before directly colliding with a large cedar.
Groaning from the impact you reel as you try to gather yourself, clinging to the tree for support.Â
You hear a twig snap behind you and you whirl around as you are faced with a largest gray wolf out of the pack who had been chasing you.Â
The alpha wolfâs teeth glint menacingly as their breath escapes in visible puffs in the frigid night air.Â
Too late to try to make a run for it again, you whimper as you resign yourself to your fate. You slid down the large tree to bury your face in your knees.
Was this it?
Was this how you died?
You werenât even able to see Toji after coming all this way.Â
You also wanted to be able to hug Megumi one last time and maybe knock the daylights out of Tsukumo for her horrible ass idea.Â
But ultimately this was all your fault.Â
You could be snuggled up with Gumi on the sofa with snacks watching Anpanman but your dumbass had to go galavanting off into the middle of the woods like a fucking lunatic and now youâre about to be eaten by a wolf.
You could feel the wolfâs overbearing presence as it approached you but you couldnât bear to look up. Youâd rather spend your final moments thinking of Toji and Megumi.Â
Yet despite your impending doom, your head did snap up once you felt a rough tongue gently lick your ankles and curiously sniff at the ends of Toji's hoodie covering your legs.Â
The wolf was more than intimidating up close as its giant muzzle was the size of your entire head.
However the wolf regarded you cautiously like it almost recognized you before releasing its own chillingly deep howl and promptly running off.
Waitâ T-The hell?!
You sat there at the trunk of the tree trying to process the interaction that just took place but you didnât have much time to ponder as you heard something else approaching you rapidly.
The sound of snapping twigs and heavy, uneven footfalls donât seem to be that of a wolf, renewing the sensation of dread through your body.Â
Your heart races in your chest as the ominous sounds of the being looming evermore closer become more pronounced.
From the shadows emerges a monstrous figure.
The fog doesnât reach this deep into the forest and the moonlight that peeks between the trees glimmers on its enlarged taut muscles.Â
Its eyes, red, burn like fiery amber.Â
Fierce and resolute you can see them pierce through the darkness long before you can make out any features of the creature's face.
What you think upon first glance must be a demonic apparition from your worst nightmares ends up beingâÂ
Toji?!
As he steps into a beam of moonlight, the transformation before you is complete.Â
Tojiâs once-human and feet hands have become formidable claws with nails like blades, his face remains mostly unchanged with the exception of his mouth which in his snarl reveals rows of gleaming, razor-sharp teeth.
He is still mostly human in appearance but you can tell he stands taller, nearly 8 feet.
The thicker body hair on his forearms bristles with raw power.
He was completely bare save for the tattered jeans barely hanging on his body that had torn from the sheer size of his enormous muscularity in this form.
Each step he takes towards you makes your heart skip a beat yet you stare transfixed, unable to look away and your tears increase.
Was this terrifying otherworldly apparition the boyfriend you had been searching for?
Time stands still in that haunting moment as Tojiâs eyes bore into your soul with a predatory intensity.Â
His hunger and primal instincts radiates off of him like a palpable force.Â
âT-T-Toji?âÂ
You cautiously inquire through your quiet sobs.Â
âY/N?! What the fuck do you think yâer doing out here?âÂ
Toji snarls back at you. His growl seems to cause the very atmosphere to vibrate and the earth beneath you quakes as your body involuntarily quivered with fear.Â
Toji thought he must have been losing his goddamn mind when he caught onto your scent earlier but here you were like a lost little lamb to the slaughter before him.
He came out onto the woods to be alone, away from civilization and away from you and Megumi during his monthly transformations.Â
It was safer that way, for all of you.
You had been fortunate the local wolf pack had acknowledged him as their Alpha and recognized his scent on you.
But there were far worse dangers in the forest besides them.
Toji wouldnât be able to protect you like he was now.Â
Not with you needing protection from him too.
Protection from him as not only was it a full moon, it was a harvest moon, a mating moon.Â
The primal urge to rip you apart was only truncated by the more intense carnal urge to mate with you. Toji wanted to claim you as his and fuck you so hard into the girthy cedar behind you the entire tree would topple over by its roots.
He had wanted to claim you as his mate for a while now.
Even moved you in with him and Megumi as the final step but you couldnât wait for that, could you?Â
You had managed to track him somehow all the way out here and throw his whole plan into the shitter.Â
He could barely control himself in this form as it is and now your scent, blubbering cries and the fucking harvest moon were sending him with full force into a fierce rut.Â
âT-Toji w-what is this!? W-whatâs happened to you!? W-what are you doing out here?!âÂ
Worry saturates your voice as you choke out your questions in rapid fire cries not giving him time to even respond.
Toji fights the predatory instinct in him who sees you as his prey and if your gaze wasnât so focused on trying to read his face for answers you surely would have noticed him fully bricked near bursting out of his worn jeans.
You looked so appetizing.Â
He needed you.
However, Toji could tell your nerves were completely shot and the slightest twitch of his muscles toward you had you almost jumping out of your skin like a little bunny rabbit.
âY-Y/NâŠâÂ
His voice strained itself into a murmur as he attempted to do his best to lull you into some sort of security so he could explain things calmly to you.
Yet the way he was near salivating, drool dripping from his canines as he panted and towered over you did anything but make you feel secure.Â
You mistook his lust for bloodthirstiness.
âJust calm down. Itâs OK.â
Toji needed you to be calm like he needed you to take steadier breaths if he was going to successfully win the tumultuous war he was fighting against his instincts to pounce on you.Â
There is an oppressive tension between the two of you and he can tell you are also fighting against your fight or flight reflexes.
Good girl.Â
It would be disastrous if you did something foolish, no telling what might happen then.
But unfortunately for the both of you, your fits of emotion and impulses are what had your crazy ass out here in the first place.Â
The pressure had officially gotten to you.Â
Tojiâs lies, your car, the woods, the wolves, everything leading up to this point bubbled over because the last thing you wanted to be told right now was to âjust calm downâ.
You snapped.Â
âOk? OK?! OKAY?!...TOJI WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT THIS IS O.K. RIGHT NOW!?â
You were practically hysterical as you yelled at him, momentarily forgetting your fears of Tojiâs new form.
The trigger of being told to 'calm down' in a situation where you clearly had every right to feel every fucking emotion you wanted won out over everything else.
âMY CAR BROKE DOWN BECAUSE OF YOU DOING GOD KNOWS WHAT WITH WHOEVER THE FUCK OUT HERE, I LITERALLY WAS JUST CHASED BY WOLVES, ALMOST EATEN, AND Y-YOU⊠Y-YOU-â
A crackling snap came from above you and you realized Tojiâs claws had completely ripped a large chunk out of the tree right above your head.
Your tantrum had in turn pushed him over the edge as well.Â
His irises flared intensely at you as you quivered under his gaze in fear.
He would have you but first, he would play with you a bit.
Things never happened the easy way with you.
Yet, thatâs also exactly the way Toji liked it too. That's why he'd put up with you thus far.
A malevolent smirk dons Toji's features as his simple command issues an unsettling tremor running down into the depths of your being.
âRun.â

Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard (Modern Times, The Great Dictator)âhollywood royalty and real life married, these two convey a real chumminess when they're onscreen together so you believe they're not just shippable, they're pals <3
Paul Newman and Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting)âMy god, their chemistry. It's iconic. And very very sexy. They're kind of canonically in a throuple in the first one, so that's kind of like playing an actual romance. But also, they're the central relationships of both films and their inexplicable devotion to each other is a key driving force in them. Those blue eyed bastards. I love them.
This is round 1 of a mini Christmas tournament. Each poll lasts for three days. If you'd like to send additional propaganda supporting your favorite hot couple, you can reblog this post with your propaganda added, send it to my asks, or tag me in it. To vote in all the polls, click here. Happy holidays!
[additional sexy propaganda under the cut]
no additional propaganda submitted for Chaplin and Goddard
Redford and Newman:
The following propanda was submitted by the anon who lives in my vents:
[drags self out of the vents reeking of stale gasoline] SO ABOUT THAT NEW MINI POLL.......may i suggest: ROBERT REDFORD and PAUL NEWMAN in BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. MY REASONING:
thagt was some of tha gayest shit i've ever seen in my entire life and i'm only 23
but for realsies, that movie was literally a love story between butch n sundance. every single thing they did, they did together
THEY'RE EVEN PERFECT OPPOSITES IN PERSONALITYâbutch is the optimistic guy who never shuts up and is less intimidating than he looks; sundance is the pessimistic brooder who looks harmless because he's pretty, but is the most dangerous guy you'll ever meet
AND THEN,,,,,, EVEN WHEN THEY (SPOILERS) HAD THAT THROUPLEY THING GOING ON WITH ETTA IN BOLIVIA, AND ETTA EVENTUALLY WANTED TO LEAVE, SUNDANCE STILL CHOSE TO STAY WITH BUTCH AND DIE RATHER THAN LIVE A SEMI-SAFE LIFE WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND!!!!!!!! LIKE!!!!!! GIRL WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!
AND THE FINAL SCENE Iâi need to stare at a WALLâ
plus the fact that paul newman and robert redford were actually besties irl meant that their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS. even when i was A VERY STUPID LITTLE KID and i watched that movie for the first time, i was like ".......so um... are they, like, in love with each other and that lady?"
PLUS THE FACT THAT THE MOVIE WAS DIRECTED BY THE SAME GUY WHO WOULD LATER DIRECT THE STING AND THAT MOVIE WAS JUST AS, IF NOT MORE GAY, Iâ
O-|-< (â me lying dead on the ground)
THE TRUST, THE INTIMACY, THE BANTER, THE LOYALTY, THE INHERENT HOMOEROTICISM OF DYING SIDE BY SIDEâ
they're gay, your honour.
ergo, dear mod, i humbly ask that you consider two of my blorbos for the mini poll bracket <3 if you need more information, literally just dm me or tag me, i'll be hangin' out in the vents đđ€đŒ as usual (unless my house explodes into bats)

âVOICELINES ABOUT YOU. various
Synopsis: Yuuken interrogates some of the boys on the campus about their special someone. Hearing their loving ramblings on you was certainly not what he expected.

About: Riddle's Rose
"Rose? I see you've met that troublesome intern at the library. That's a nickname. Their name is (Y/N) and yes, they are my partner." "A-Ah? I'm so direct? Well, you asked me a question! Though...I would prefer that this discussion end here. I prefer to keep my relationship with them private.â
Chat: Childhood Memories
âEver since we were young, (Y/N) was quite rebellious. The complete opposite of me as a child, really. They were always sneaking off during the night and coming over to visit me. Mother...didn't approve of them and often screamed in their face. I was quite terrified she would scare them away, though that didn't stop them at all. Haha, I think they got even more persistent afterwards. I am truly glad I met them.â
Personal Story:Â To the Hospital
âAgain...? I see. Thank you, Trey. Hmph, I'll have to schedule another visit once more."
> "Riddle? What's wrong?"
"Ah, YuukenâIt's Rose. They've gotten admitted to the hospital...again. (Y/N) is quite impulsive and tends to bite off more than they can chew. On more than occasion, like now, I would find out about their hospital admissions via Trey days or even weeks after."
>"Aren't you dating? Why aren't they telling you?"
"They claim that they withhold the information from me out of concern for my workload or out of fear of being a burden. Though that isâa sentiment I don't understand. Nothing is more important to me than their health."

About: The Photo In His Wallet
"Where is it?! Man, I'm so fucked if I lost itâOh?! Oi, Yuuken! That wallet's mine! Man, thanks a lot. I really would've been screwed over if it weren't for you." "Eh? The photo? Shishishishi curious, aren't cha? Hmmm...how 'bout this? You get me a steaming hot meat bun and I'll give you a story time about them."
Chat: A Hopeful Future
"My studies? Course I take them seriously! That's what's gonna' put food on the table one day. Plus, I wanna' give (Y/N)Â the life they deserveâWhat'd I mean? Well, if I'm going to be their husband, I want 'em to live comfortably. It's not like we need anythin' luxurious, anyways. As long as we're together and there's enough food to go by, it's going to be all right."
Personal Story:Â In Sickness and In Health
"....that's good to hear. Please look after 'em, granny. Love ya." The call ends and Ruggie sighs. "That's the best news I've received since."
>"News?"
"Guh-?! Man! What's with you and sneaking up on me!? Yeah yeahâyou heard right...news. Granny just called me to talk about (Y/N), their health is looking up. Tell ya' what, I knew that deal with Azul was worth it. I managed to snag some medicine and send it home."
>"Oh? Medicine?"
"Yeah. Ever since my first year of high school, they were sick and bedridden. (Y/N)'s parents don't have enough money for a doctor, so there's not much they can do. Of course, I'm out here doin' my best to help too."
"I really...I really wanna see them up and runnin' again. Hey, who knowsâmaybe we'll get to make flower crowns for the village kids again...together."

About: An Interrogation
"Yuuken, youâve met (Y/N), I hear. Well, as their partner, it's only right that I ask you about it. I assume you don't mind. So, what is your opinion of them? Nothing short of perfection, I hope."
"Hm? You think they're nice? Good then."
Chat: Busy Octoboss
"With all the deals, my maintenance of my academic ranking, and my position as Monstro Lounge's manager, my workload is quite substantial compared to most. And, I regret to say that it does get in the way of my personal life, including quality time with my lover. It tears at my heart, yet I cherish how they're so understanding and patient. Still, sometimes I can't help but think I am undeserving of them..."
Personal Story: Deep Sea Bonds
"My childhood is not something that I appreciate or want to remember. Yet, despite everything I've been through, I do think it is pleasant to look back on the days when I met them. You see, (Y/N)Â was bullied too. They were just like me, relentlessly bad mouthed and hurt by the kids around us. However, they never failed to greet me every day with a bright smile on their face."
>"What a sunny person."
"They'd also always have the courage and bravery to stand up for me, often taking the brunt of the bullying. I wish I could say I did the same for them...but I was far too cowardly back then..."
>"Wow. You two must be really close, then."
"Of course. They've been through a lot.Which is exactly why I won't allow anyone to speak ill of them anymore." Azul pauses, smiling slyly. "Say, Yuuken. You'll tell me if anyone casts aspersions on my Angelfish, won't you?"

About: A Helping Hand
"Hm? What's that? Ah, youâve met my darling pearl. I see. I do notice how youâve been frequenting Monstro Lounge latelyâŠHave you perhaps acquired a romantic interest towards them? No? Hehe, Alright." "Now, to answer your question, yes, that is right; (Y/N) routinely comes over to visit and aid me in my Mountain Treks. I couldn't be more grateful for their assistance."
Chat: The Pearl Ring
"Oya? I see you're curious about the ring I've been crafting. Well, it's for (Y/N). You see, in merfolk culture, we create handcrafted jewelry to serve as a courting gift. This is one of many ornaments I plan on giving them. Though, this one is...particularly unique. Ah, well...(Y/N) Leech does have a nice ring to it, does it not?"
Personal Story: A Jaded Reaction
"Oya? (Y/N)Â is spending the night at Ramshackle? Whatever reason for?"
>"Grim wanted to have a game night."
"Ah. I see. How...lovely. What's that? My smile is frightening you? Oho, now is it? Hehe, my deepest apologies. We eels tend to be quite...protective. I so anticipate you to take good care of them. And fret not, as long as you keep them away from any harm, no disputes shall arise."
>"Uh...and if something happened?"
"What if something happened...? Well, I'm sure you wouldn't mind being hunted down the face of the earth, tied up, and pulled down to the deepest pits of the blue ocean, where no one can hear your anguished cries for help...Would you?"Â
>"..."
"Just joking. I would never do that."

About: A Sea Walnut
"(Y/N)? Aha~~~ You've heard of my little sea walnut? They're so adorable and squishy, yanno!âIs there a problem? If you got a problem with 'em, I'll squeeze you." "Oh? Not scared at all, huh? Ehe~ You sure are ballsy. Tread carefully now, shrimpy~!"
About: Ocean Currents
"Whenever a strong ocean current comes, sea walnut always huddles close to me and grabs my arm. They've always been afraid of being blasted away."
"They used to do that a lot when we were kids, but it never gets old. Hehe~ Sometimes, I lead them to places where the waves are strong, jus' so they can cling onto me! It's so funny to see 'em get afraid and scramble after me when I move too far away. "
Personal Story: Shark Attack
"Hmm~? Oh, what're these bite marks? Rad, aren't they? I got them after fighting a buncha' sharks."
>"Sharks?! Why would you do that?"
"To get these. It's shark teeth. Our anniversary is comin' up, and Jade suggested that I should make some jewelry for them. It's a merfolk courting thing. Azul 'n Jade told me to get them pearls, but I thought that was boring. So, I'm making one with shark teeth instead! Isn't that cool~?"
>"I-I guess, but what happened to the sharks?"
"Ugh. None of them were a fun hunt. The entire hoard swam away so fast. Can you believe it???âŠÂ Iâm not the typa eel who would let my prey get away that easily, though. And itâs not like I had anything better to do. Ehehe! There were so many of those sharks swarming around, but I managed to squeeze them all! Well, it was worth it in the end cuz I got what I wanted. I'll do anythin' for my little sea walnut~"

About: A Hearty Meal
âWhat am i doing? Well, I'm making some Roast Chicken with Sumac Flatbread. Oh? Who's (Y/N)? Ah, Kalim must have told you, huh. (Y/N) is my partner. They are truly wonderful."
"For exampleâThough I like to think I'm skilled at disguising my true feelings, the moment I go to see them, they already know what I'm thinking. They have a keen sense of intuition and always seem to know what I need and when I need it. Truly, I'm grateful for such a caringâAh, I'm sorry. I was rambling again."
Chat: Snake-Eyed Envy
"I can't dispute that a lot of people back home are vying for their affection. That bothers me at times. As Kalim's babysitter-ehem, retainer, I don't have enough time to check in on them every day...However, as cheesy as it sounds, I have yet to meet someone who is as smitten with (Y/N) as I am."
Personal Story: World Left Unsaid
"I soon understood that I was more than the circumstances of my birth, all thanks to (Y/N). In fact, My bond with Kalim has become stronger and more genuine thanks to them. I...realized my hatred for Kalim was just my desire for my circumstances to be different...I didn't hate him at all. Without (Y/N), I would never have understood it."
>"They must be very important to you, Jamil."
"Absolutely. I was terrified that I might lose them after my overblot. But to my surprise, they stayed with me. Naturally, it hurt them, but they were really compassionate towards me and about how much I had to go through."
>"Do they know of what you feel?"
"I...I don't think (Y/N) realizes just how much I cherish them. I don't think now's the right time for that though. I've hurt them too much and I still have a long way to go before I fix things."

"I am, indeed, betrothed. Heh. Why are you looking so bewildered, Child of Man? If I'm going to be a king someday, it only makes sense that I would need someone to reign alongside me, no? At first glance, (Y/N) may seem aloof, but as you get to know them more, you'll see that they are actually incredibly lovely and warm."
"You never thought I was one for romance? My, my... What a bold statement, you best learn how to hold your tongue. Have you considered that I could use lightning to smite you where you stand?...Now, nowâThat was a joke. You don't have to cower in fear."
Chat: Safe And Sound
"My precious treasure tells me that I tend to get protective at times. Though can you really fault a lover for wanting to protect the one who is most important to them in this cruel, ruthless world. One where others will not hesitate to turn on you?"
Personal Story: The Art Of War
"I am actually the first of my lineage to wed someone who is not a noble. You see, (Y/N) is a knight-in-training. And, as you can probably guess, they served as my retainer. To see them at work was truly a magnificent sight to witness. They command attention and radiate strength. While I had always admired them, I could not bring myself to express my true feelings to them. Until...that night."
>"That night?"
"Yes. On the evening of Silver's 16th birthday, someone had rushed at me with a dagger in hand. (Y/N) was the first to respond and took the hit for me...The sound of their screams as the knife tore through their flesh was truly...horrifying."
>"That's horrible! What happened to the guy?"
"Worry not, he was taken care of accordingly....If there is anything Iâve learned from Lilia's many teachings, itâs that the worst calamities that befall an army arise from hesitation. To avoid further offensives, one must deal with and eliminate adversaries as soon as possible. Don't you think so?"

Hi there, I would like to request Cloud, if thats okay. A sparring session that leads into an unexpected kiss?
Just read you are feeling under the weather, hope you feel better soon!
Sweet anon, I'm sorry this took me literally months! Please lemme know what you think x
Itâs late as you leave your room at Stargazer Heights, pulling the door closed behind you with a gentle click. The weight of your new sword still feels unnervingly foreign on your back as you head down the stairs carefully, not wanting to disturb any of your neighboursâ sleep with your heavy footfalls.
Just because you couldnât sleep didnât mean theirs should suffer in return.
Your beloved, trusty sword, after many years of faithful service in the Watch, had snapped clean in two after a particularly good thwack against a hard-shelled creature whilst on a job in the scrapyard earlier that day. If that wasnât enough, it just had to happen in front of Cloud Strife, the blonde ex-Soldier who had joined the Avalanche ranks - temporarily, at least â and who you were somewhat hoping to impress with your mastery of the blade as common ground over the past few weeks.
âYouâd be good for him, you know?â Tifa had teased over the bar one night, catching you staring a little too long as he sat down the opposite end, nursing a drink. Youâd have told her to hush if Barretâs voice wasnât booming around the establishment, meaning you were lucky to have even heard her comment in the first place.
Instead, you answer flustered. âWhat? I⊠Heâs your⊠No!â
âI donât like him like that, sweetie.â Sheâd reassured, patting your hand with a smile. âPlus, Iâm pretty sure he likes you.â
âMe?â You scoff, shaking your head. âI donât think heâs aware I exist, not with how Jessie has been all over him.â
âMm.â Tifa purses her lips in thought before they pulled back into a knowing smile â sheâd caught the mercâs gaze flickering in your direction before it settled back on the drink before him. âNo, I think Cloudâs warming up to you. Let me see what I can do.â
âTifa-â
Biggsâ warm hand wrapped around your arm and tugged you up from the bar and away from your protest in an instant. âCome on, you owe me a rematch and Iâve finally convinced Wedge to let us have a round.â
You concede, destroying Biggs at darts once again would be a good distraction from the blonde at the bar. Besides, what could Tifa do anyway?
--
What Tifa could do, apparently, was make it so whenever Cloud took on a job, Biggs or Wedge would insist you tag along to help him navigate the area â sometimes with Tifa, sometimes without â and thatâs what had led you to today, stuck deep within the scrapyard with a broken blade.
Youâd never been any good with your fists, nor could aim a gun straight â despite tips from Tifa and Biggs over the years â so, reluctantly, youâd been relegated to the back line for the rest of the outing. At the most, you could fling a spell or two from the materia still equipped in the broken hilt when you could.
Unfortunately, it meant you didnât have anything really to defend yourself with whilst the materia recharged. A nasty hit from a retreating drake had sent you tumbling backwards, head literally over heels. It dived back down at you, realizing you were now easy prey, ready to go for a nasty bite when a certain blonde mercâs sword dug into its side, sending it flying over in Tifaâs direction who finished it off with a perfectly executed roundhouse kick â all before your life could flash before your eyes.
âAre you okay?â Cloud crouches in front of you, his sword already sheathed, and places a hand on your arm as he awaits your answer. His expression, usually stoic and unreadable, is marred by a slight furrow in his brow as he looks you over with concerned Mako-blue eyes.
He must find you at least tolerable, youâd decided, as he didnât seem to protest as much when you joined them on jobs like this around the slums.
Though maybe not ever again after todayâs pathetic display.
âYeah,â you nod, feeling foolish. âStill in one piece. Thanks for that.â
âDonât mention it.â He shrugs and gets to his feet, offering you his hand in assistance.
You take it, relishing the feeling as his gloved fingers wrap around your palm. He pulls you up with a little too much gusto â or maybe underestimates his own strength - sending you stumbling forward. You try and catch your balance, only to find your hand placed firmly against his chest, his other hand now on the small of your back in alarm.
âUhâŠâ
âS-sorry,â you stutter out and retreat back, bowing your head as your face feels horrendously warm. Somewhere behind you, Tifa poorly attempts to hide a giggle.
âItâs fine.â His tone is back to his usual curt manner. âCome on - we should head back.â And without another word, Cloud spins on his heels and storms off ahead.
âCloud, wait up!â Tifa calls, threading her arm through yours to pull you along with her. âHeâll get there â donât worry.â
--
Youâd taken the blade in to the weapons store below the Watchâs HQ after reporting in, Cloud and Tifa following behind. The proprietor dutifully inspected it for a few moments before deeming it beyond reasonable repair - said he could re-forge it, but it would only last a hit or two before it snapped in two again and he didnât want the bad advertisement. Heâd offered some gil for the scrap metal value and waved to the selection of his ready-made wares. Even with the gil heâd proposed and from your own pocket, the prices made your eyes water.
âCan I pay in instalments?â
He scoffs.
âYou know Iâm good for it.â
âThis ainât a charity, kid.â
âHere.â Cloud had stepped forward then, placing a pouch of gil on the counter. âThat should cover it.â
âWhat?â Your eyes widened in disbelief. Cloud had been hounding Tifa and Barret for his pay for days and you knew he still hadnât received all of it yet. âNo, I couldnât â thatâs yours.â
âYou need a weapon.â He shrugs, Tifa bouncing on her heels behind him at his act of generosity, a told you so smile plastered across her face. âPay me back in instalments, if you want. I donât care.â
âAre you sure?â
He nods, crossing his arms. âYouâre good with a blade, it would be a waste for you not to have one.â
Your scalp tingles at the compliment.
The blades all felt lighter - maybe youâd grown stronger over time? - though they were thinner in width in comparison to your old blade. Youâd performed a cautionary test swing of each towards the back of the shop but they all felt off, unbalanced. Begrudgingly, one felt a little less odd to wield so youâd settled with that, thankful it was a mid-range price of the selection so you hadnât needed the entirety of Cloudâs gil pouch.
âIâll pay you back as soon as I can â I promise.â
Cloud shrugs, as usual.
--
You swing at the tower of boxes youâd assembled in the middle of the wasteland, trying to be precise and knock out the one in the middle, but as soon as you release the momentum you nearly lose your balance, missing entirely. If you were in combat, it wouldâve been a pathetic sight to behold. Thankfully, you were the only one to wit-
âHi.â
You jump, spinning on your heels to face the blonde mercenary, holding your blade aloft in a defensive stance to an unimpressed face.
âCloud! Hi.â Your heart is pounding at his sudden arrival â how could you not have heard him approaching? You lower your blade to rest on the floor. âSorry, did I wake you when I left?â
âNo, I couldnât sleep so I heard you leave.â He folds his arms, looking a little displeased. âYou shouldnât be out here on your own, you know? Itâs not safe.â
âI wanted to get some practice in, thatâs all.â You look down at the sword in your hand in demonstration. âThereâs been no more wererats here since you cleaned out the nest either, so itâs safe enough.â
âItâs not just fiends Iâm talking about.â
Thatâs true â unfortunately, you werenât a complete stranger to the troopers that often patrolled the slums. All it took was one to recognize your face and youâd be dragged to Shinra HQ faster than you could blink.
âI really need to get used to the weight, though. Barret wants to strike any day and-â
âFine. Iâll spar with you.â
You werenât expecting that. âReally?â
âWhy not?â He reaches back for his sword, before swinging it out in front of him playfully. âUnless youâre scared.â
You bite your lip in a smile. âBring it on, Strife.â
Cloud holds back at first, acting more as a training dummy for you to swing at. He doesnât even need to deflect any of your blows at the beginning, but as you become familiar with the weight and how the new blade swings, finally he starts to raise his sword in return, the sound of metal clashing echoing through the air before one firm blow sends you toppling back, the Buster Sword now inches above your neck.
âBetter.â He pulls back his sword and offers you his hand, which you gratefully accept, bracing yourself for his strength this time to avoid what had happened that afternoon. âTry again.â
Youâre not sure how much time passes like that, but steadily your confidence in your weapon grows and it turns into a proper sparring bout, both giving it your absolute all. As your blades clash, crossed in front of each otherâs faces, you risk a smile at the blonde merc. Suddenly, Cloudâs forearms lose their tension, meaning you get an upperhand you were not expecting. You swing your sword out to the right and fall forward, Cloud toppling backwards, his sword to his right, and his head smacking into the ground as you fall on top of him.
âOh⊠Shiva,â you gasp, heart pounding, your thighs somehow straddling around his. âAre you hurt?â
Cloud doesnât reply, staring up at you in bemusement as he tries to catch his breath.
âCloud?â You lean down, planting your hands either side of his head for balance.
He lifts his head, suddenly, and presses a kiss to your lips.
Your arms go limp and you drop into his embrace, his arm wrapping around your waist to hold you close as you return the kiss, lifting a hand to cup his cheek, fingers curling into his blonde hair, blissfully lost in the moment until there is an odd, inhuman sound from behind you.
Cloud sits bolt upright, twisting you as he does so youâre sat in his lap, one arm still wrapped tightly around your waist and, somehow, the Buster Sword back in his other hand as he holds it out in defense.
A cat sits a few meters in front of the two of you, flicking its tail back and forth curiously. You feel his muscles relax beneath your touch at the realization. You get to your feet then, grabbing your blade as you do so and securing it against your back. Though you feel flustered, you canât turn down the opportunity to offer Cloud an assisting hand this time.
To your delight, he accepts, somehow twisting it as he stands in order to intertwine your fingers within his.
âWe⊠We, er, should get back.â He mumbles.
âYeah, I guess so.â
He leads you back through the tunnel, silently, fingers still laced, and back towards Stargazer Heights. You climb the stairs together before he brings you to a stop outside your door, hesitating. Your stomach twists â does he regret what happened? Are you just to wake up tomorrow morning and it will feel like nothing but a dream?
A firm squeeze of your hand brings you back to the present, as if he could read your thoughts. âIâve been thinking about that for a while.â Cloud whispers, cautious of his voice carrying through the neighboursâ door. âItâs⊠unfortunate that we were interrupted.â
You place a hand on your door handle and smile, coyly. âWould you like to come in?â
Cloud smirks. âDo you have any pets?â

It sucks that I have nowhere near enough time or energy to make a fangame because I have such a good idea for a direct sequel to the Johto games and I can't stop rotating it in my brain. Anyway I just spent the last 8 hours typing up the entire plot for no particular reason
Pokemon Blaze Gold and Storm Silver
-Box mascots are Entei and Raikou, but new formes with Ho-Oh/Lugia's wings respectively plus added motifs from each Pokemon, Fire/Flying and Electric/Flying
-Regional Pokedex has all Kanto/Johto Pokemon minus the Kanto starters available, plus every new evolution to a Kanto/Johto Pokemon up to Gen 4
-Start in Camellia Town, a new town south of Route 29, loosely based on Toyohashi
-Rival 1 is your neighbour, Maya, who has major chuuni vibes, tells you Prof Elm has returned from a trip and that you should go ask him for a Pokemon, declares herself the best trainer ever despite having no Pokemon
-Start traveling to New Bark Town but get interrupted by Professor Elm upon entering the grass
-He reluctantly agrees to take you to his lab on Maya's insistence
-At his lab you meet his kid who is also his assistant, Rival 2, who is the opposite gender version of the player character. Following old traditions I'm gonna say the male character default name is Blaze and the female character default name is Storm. I'm gonna refer to the rival as Blaze going forward but it depends on your PC.
-Elm says he was going to offer one of the three to Blaze, but we can have the other two.
-Blaze gets nervous and indecisive and asks us to pick first, Maya says it doesn't matter which one they get because she will win no matter what. Maya picks the starter that's super effective against yours, Blaze picks the one it's weak to. Maya immediately challenges you to a battle.
-After you win, Maya declares that this is jist a roadblock and that she's going to take on the gym challenge and become champion. Elm gets wistful remembering the PC from the original games, and then decides to ask you to retrieve a package from another professor in Cherrygrove City.
-Route 46 now has wild Pikachu, plus a new part of Dark Cave featuring all Pokemon from the Violet City side as the original location will not be accessible until much later. Phanpy and Teddiursa are also available in their respective Crystal version locations (I have no idea why HGSS removed this inprovement). Paras is also now available on Route 30. These changes have been added so that you are not completely fucked if you didn't pick Chikorita.
-Cherrygrove City is now much larger, featuring a port, and a new Pokemon Gym. You go to the house Elm indicated but Blaze comes out and says the professor is out, and that they need to go look for him.
-On Route 30, you see Professor Oak standing in front of a cliff face dividing the route in half. He tells you that 6 years ago, a great cave suddenly sprung from the ground, causing great devastation. Nobody knows how, and it should have been impossible. He then tells you to come with him to get the parcels Elm asked for.
-Upon returning and being handed the parcels, Blaze asks you to battle him. When you win, he gets nervous and asks you what you think it takes to be a good trainer, before leaving.
-When you all return to Professor Elm, he hands you and Blaze the newest Pokedex which was in the package from Oak. He asks you to fill out the dex. After Blaze leaves to go catch Pokemon, he suggests you could try the gym challenge like Maya is.
-You run into your mother in front of the entrance to Camellia Town. After explaining the situation, she gives you the Poketch and encourages you.
-When you get to Cherrygrove Gym, Maya comes out and declares she beat the gym leader easily (though she is clearly worn out), and says she's going to get on a ferry to go take on Cianwood Gym.
-Inside, the Gym Leader, Akua, is a cheerful, portly middle-aged lady wearing a blue floral patterned sundress. Her team is a Lv12 Chinchou and a Lv14 Corsola. Upon winning, she grants you the Shore Badge.
-Upon leaving, a boat has returned to the port. You can interact with it and travel to Cianwood City. You arrive at the new Cianwood Port inside Cliff Edge Gate. However, Chuck is blocking the entrance to Cianwood City proper. He asks you to go after his son, Hurley, who ran to the Safari Zone saying something about Team Rocket - which is strange, since Team Rocket disappeared 10 years ago.
-The same Pokemon as usual are available on Routes 47/48, but only their first stages, and levelled down. Miltank has been replaced with Murkrow to make Dark-types accessible earlier in game.
-You see Hurley in front of the Safari Zone. He is a young boy with a buzzcut, tatami pants, and a sarashi chest wrap. He is surrounded by a group of Team Rocket grunts. Team Rocket are trying to kidnap all of the Pokemon out of the Safari Zone. Hurley is trying to take on all the Rocket Grunts himself. Blaze arrives and you take on two of the grunts in a double battle.
-After winning, the entrance to the Safari Zone is wrecked, so theycare trmporarily closed. Hurley thanks you for your help, and gives you the field move Poketch app for Headbutt. He tells you some of the apps need gym badges, but not this one, before announcing that he is the new Cianwood gym leader now that his dad has retired.
-You return to Cianwood City, which is now accessible, along with its gym. Hurley has a Lv18 Tyrogue and a Lv20 Heracross. Upon winning, he grants you the Storm Badge, which allows you to use the Fly app (which you will need to acquire later). The ferry is now ready to depart for Olivine City.
-At Olivine, when you pass in front of the Olivine Gym, Maya is there. They tell you they came to fight Jasmine, but she's gone travelling to Sinnoh and the gym is closed. Maya challenges you to a battle. She has a Lv18 Snubbull, a Lv19 Shellder/Bellsprout/Growlithe (whichever is weak to your starter), and a Lv22 Bayleef/Quilava/Croconaw.
-At Ecruteak City, the Gym is locked, and Morty is in the Burnt Tower. When you enter it, you run into Colress as he is leaving the building. He talks about the Legendary Beasts that were believed to have existed in this building. When you go up and speak to Morty, he says he had been having a conversation with Colress about the legends surrounding the towers. He then heads back to his Gym. Houndour is now catchable in Burnt Tower.
-The Kimono Girls can be battled as before for the Surf app, however there are now 7 of them, with the addition of Leafeon and Glaceon.
-Morty has a Lv24 Gastly, a Lv25 Misdreavus, and a Lv27 Gengar. Upon defeating him, he grants you the Fog Badge, allowing you to use the Surf app.
-The path south of Ecrutreak is blocked by a Sudowoodo, forcing you east. As you enter Route 42, Blaze appears. He says he thinks he's gotten stronger and wants to test himself against you. His team is a Lv25 Pikachu, a Lv20 Happiny, a Lv24 Oddish/Vulpix/Staryu (whichever is super effective against your starter), and a Lv27 Bayleef/Quilava/Croconaw. After you win, he says Professor Elm said to give you this, and installs the Rock Smash app on your phone.
-Upon arriving to Mahogany Town, you see that it has been levelled by the rising caves. The Gym and Pokemon Center are in disrepair, and the path to Route 44 is obstructed by a new cliff face. If you enter the one accessible house, the hermit inside will tell you everyone left when the disaster happened, and they moved to Lycoris or Ecruteak cities, and that the Gym Leader Pryce disappeared when the cave formed and hasn't been since since.
-At the Lake of Rage, two Team Rocket grunts are standing by the water. When they see you, they challenge you to a battle. After defeating them, more arrive, but they are scared off by the arrival of Silver. Silver thanks you for defeating the grunts, and introduces himself. He says he's had some experiences with Team Rocket before, and that it's troubling to see them around here. He then gives you a Squirtbottle to get past the Sudowoodo.
At this point, you can take on the next three Gym Leaders in any order you want. However, there is a firm level curve, and if you challenge the 6th one next you're likely to get your ass kicked - you are, however, free to do so. This will be following the recommended order.
-After removing the Sudowoodo, the path to Violet City and the Ruins of Alph is blocked by a risen cave, forcing you towards Goldenrod City. This area is mostly unchanged, but more houses have been made accessible, including one with a conspicuously blocked off basement. Additionally, if you enter the basement of the Pokemart, they tell you you're not allowed down there and send you back into the elevator. The radio tower has modernized, and now runs streaming content and podcasts. You can also still obtain an Eevee from Bill at his home.
-At Goldenrod Gym, Whitney has a Lv29 Clefairy, a Lv31 Furret, and a Lv33 Miltank. Upon defeating her, she grants you the Plain Badge, allowing you to use the Strength app. She has a line about how she's not gonna cry over losing any more, and tells you there's a reward at National Park for the Strength app if you win the Bug-Catching Contest (if you haven't already won it).
-The Bug Catching contest can now be played at any time, and allows you to catch as many as you like, with your final score being a point total so as to make it way easier to win. You also get to choose which Pokemon you keep at the end so you don't have to keep a bunch of fodder mons.
-When passing the Daycare, you see Maya outside. She brags about having 5 gym badges and challenges you again. She has a Lv27 Snubbull, two of Lv28 Weepinbell/Shellder/Growlithe (excluding whichever matches their starter's type), and a Lv32 Bayleef/Quilava/Croconaw. When defeated, she throws a mild tantrum about how she has more gym badges and should be stronger than you, but then corrects herself and offers you one of two eggs she was given by the daycare. Yours contains a Togepi.
-In Ilex Forest, at the Celebi shrine, you encounter a strange man with a tattered black cloak shrouding their body, extremely long white hair, and a white mask covering their entire face, although you cannot see the front of it from your position. He is talking to the shrine. "Celebi... how long has it been? To this day, I still don't understand why...". He sees you, at which point he excuses himself and leaves.
-At Azalea Gym, Bugsy, now an adult, has a Lv35 Ledian, Lv35 Ariados, and a Lv36 Scizor. Upon winning, he grants you the Hive Badge, allowing you to use the Cut app.
-As soon as you leave the gym, you hear a commotion coming from nearby. Bugsy comes out of the gym, and says that sounded like the Cut master, and that it was coming from Slowpoke Well. He heads over to see what's going on. In the Well, you see the Cut master trying to corner a Team Rocket grunt, but the grunt defeats him. You step up and battle the grunt, who then tries to escape.
-When you leave the well, the grunt is being cornered by Kurt, who says he'll never let Team Rocket mess with this well again. The grunt runs away towards Union Cave. When you get to the cave's entrance, he is nowhere to be seen, and the cave's entrance is boarded up. Kurt, Bugsy, and the Cut master all arrive and tell you he must have gone into the cave, but that we shouldn't follow him - the cave was unstable after the rest of the cave system rose from the ground, and it may still be dangerous. Kurt introduces himself and tells you about Azalea Town's history with Team Rocket, and tells you about his apricorn ball service. The Cut master thanks you by giving you the Cut app.
-Returning to the Lake of Rage, the northeast has a new path, but it's obstructed by two rocket grunts. Travelling west, though, through the maze of trees, there is now a new route, Route 49. It is a winding route, covered in trees and snow. Here, you can catch Fearow, Furret, Noctowl, Murkrow, Misdreavus, Smeargle, Sneasel, Houndour, and Delibird.
-To the west of Route 49, and north of Mt. Mortar, is Lycoris City (loosely based on Fukui). It is a snow-covered city with architecture similar to Ecruteak, with numerous beds of Spider Lillies. It is divided into two halves, with the top half being on a high raised wooden platform.
-In the north is Lycoris Shrine. It is a two-storey building in the center of the raised platform, filled with trainers and wild pokemon. Here, you can find Growlithe/Vulpix, Golbat, Gastly, Haunter, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Natu, Murkrow, Sneasel, and Houndour.
-When you get to the far end of the top floor, you encounter Blaze. He tells you he came all this way looking for as many Pokemon as possible, and wants to show you. His team is a Lv37 Pikachu, Lv36 Chansey, two of Lv37 Gloom/Ninetales/Starmie (minus whichever is the same type as their starter), and Lv38 Meganium/Typhlosion/Feraligatr.
-Karen comes over, who tells you she used to be the gym leader here a long time ago. She says she was impressed by your battle and likes the look in your eye and expects she'll be seeing you again soon, before giving you the Fly app.
-At Lycoris Gym, the Leader is Shin, a tall person with spiky white hair, a sleeveless black turtleneck, mesh sleeves, long and sharp black nails, and baggy black jeans. Their team is a Lv37 Sneasel, Lv38 Umbreon, Lv37 Murkrow, and Lv40 Weavile. Upon winning, they grant you the Umbral Badge, which allows you to use the Whirlpool app.
-Once you have 6 badges (and have handled the Slowpoke Well incident), Silver will call you asking you if you can come to Mahogany Town. When you arrive, he is in front of the old Rocket hideout. He thanks you for coming, when suddenly Maya arrives, bragging about having 6 badges, before being shocked that you've caught up to them. They proclaim that they will be the strongest, and need to battle you to prove it. Silver interrupts saying we have more important things to worry about, and telling Maya that it's a mistake to view everything in terms of Weak and Strong.
-Silver then breaks down the door to the hideout with his Crobat, and inside we see the place full of Team Rocket members, who run down into the base. Silver comments that he thought they'd be smarter than hiding here again, and tells the two of you to follow him into the base.
-In the boss's office of the base, you encounter Proton, Petrel, Ariana, and Colress. Silver says he's shocked to see the three of them back at it, but asks who the new guy is. Colress introduces himself and says Team Rocket are his new benefactors. Petrel tells Silver that Colress is the brains behind their big new scheme, before Ariana tells him to be quiet. You battle Proton, while Maya battles Petrel and Silver battles Ariana. Proton has a Lv38 Golbat and a Lv39 Weezing.
-Upon winning, Proton says it doesn't matter, and they already got everything ready here. Petrel says they learned one thing from last time, and Colress flips a switch turning off all the lights. When they come back on, they have all vanished. Silver expresses disappointment that they couldn't catch them, and tells the two of you that he once battled Team Rocket here with two of his good friends. He then wonders what they're planning next before he takes his leave.
-Maya says it was always her dream to become the strongest, but that seeing the way Silver battled was something she never imagined. She trails off before leaving.
-The rocket grunts at the lake have now left, allowing you to take a new path heading down into Route 44, which is much the same as it always was besides the entrance to Mahogany Town being obscured.
-You travel through Ice Path into Blackthorn City, and on arriving at the front of the Blackthorn Gym, Maya shows up. She tells you that she's not sure if she really is the strongest, and that since you two are even she wants to battle you before either of you face the gym. She says to meet her in the Dragon's Den behind the gym, and she'll be waiting.
-In the shrine in Dragon's Den, you face off against Maya. She has a Lv42 Granbull, a Lv40 Rhydon, two of Lv42 Victreebel/Arcanine/Cloyster, and a Lv44 Meganium/Typhlosion/Feraligatr.
-Upon defeating her, she wonders if maybe she isn't the strongest after all. Before she can go on, Lance appears, and tells her that she's plenty strong, but strong isn't enough. Clair also arrives, and says they heard us talking outside their gym and watched our battle. Clair announces that she is the leader of Blackthorn gym, before Lance corrects her and says that they are the leaders of Blackthorn gym, and that they now battle side by side, and that they're excited to face us.
-In Blackthorn gym, you face off against Lance and Clair in a double battle. Lance has a Lv43 Gyarados and a Lv45 Dragonite, and Clair has a Lv42 Dragonair and a Lv44 Kingdra. Upon winning, the two of them bicker a bit, before giving you the Rising Badge, allowing use of the Waterfall app.
-When you exit the gym, you get a call from Professor Oak telling you there's an emergency at the radio tower and he needs our help. Immediately afterwards, Silver calls, and tells you Team Rocket are attacking Goldenrod City, and wonders to himself if they're really just trying to same plan all over again.
-When arriving to Goldenrod, the city is swarming with Rocket Grunts. The radio towers has waves of them in front of it, blocking the entrance. Silver is fighting them all off. Silver tells you he'll take care of this, and to go look for a cardkey in the underground - he know show they operate, and that we'll need it to get to the top of the tower. We go to look for it, however the Pokemart and the Underground are both blocked by Rocket grunts. Blaze and Maya are both here, battling rocket grunts at each of the entrances.
-Heading into the house that had the suspicious basement passage from earlier, you are immediately confronted with a rocket grunt, who accidentally gives away that this is the new secret entrance to the underground system. You then battle your way through the underground, where you eventually encounter Petrel, who has the keycard. He has two Lv40 Koffings and a Lv42 Weezing. Upon defeat, he runs away, dropping the keycard.
-You can then leave via any of the three exits, where you can see Blaze and Maya have defeated their respective batches of grunts. You head into the radio tower, now accessible, and give Silver the keycard. He heads upstairs. You encounter Proton and Ariana, but before they can stop you, Maya arrives. Silver says to fight them while he heads upstairs and deals with their leader. You and Maya enter a double battle. Proton has a Lv40 Golbat, a Lv39 Qwilfish, and a Lv42 Weezing. Ariana has a Lv40 Arbok, a Lv41 Vileplume, and a Lv42 Honchkrow.
-Upon defeating them and heading upstairs, you see that Silver has firmly defeated Archer. However, Archer makes a break for it, running outside of the building. Outside, you see Blaze, who tells you they saw Archer run towards Ilex Forest.
-In Ilex Forest, you encounter Archer at the shrine, where you challenge him. He has a Lv40 Houndour, a Lv43 Weezing, a Lv42 Ariados, and a Lv45 Houndoom.
-Upon defeating him, Silver, Maya, and Blaze arrive. Silver tells him to give up, but Archer tells him that this was a trick to buy time while the broadcast was uploading. You then get an alert on your Poketch showing you the radio tower has a live stream - you cut to the video, and you see a man shrouded in a tattered black cloak, with long white hair, and a white mask covering his face... with the Team Rocket emblem over the mask. It's the man you saw here, in Ilex Forest. He begins a speech, telling everyone that he believed that Team Rocket was done when Giovanni left - however, the broadcast 10 years ago inspired them to take up his mantle. He calls himself Rocket Mask, and declares that he is the new boss of Team Rocket. He informs them that they have plans in motion that will enable them to achieve total domination, and invites anyone who abandoned their cause to return to them to fulfil their destiny. He tells them that the Mahogany Town base is compromised, but that they should know where to go. The stream ends.
-Archer says he's completed his work, and it doesn't matter if you take him in. He tries to eacape anyway, but suddenly... Looker turns up. He apologizes to Silver for taking so long to arrive, and captures Archer. They all briefly talk about who the strange man in the mask could be. Archer refuses to tell them anything, and is hauled away by Looker. Silver thanks you for your help, and gives you the Flash app for your help. He tells you to head to Violet City through the Dark Cave.
-As everyone leaves, you begin to walk away, but suddenly hear something. Celebi floats down in front of you, before hovering over their shrine. The space in front of you begind to warp, and you are shown a vision of Rocket Mask at the shrine, with the four Rocket Execs beside him. He tells them that this shrine belongs to Celebi, and that it is thanks to them that they can begin their glorious return. Celebi then disappears, returning everything to normal.
-You fly back to Blackthorn City, and travel through the Dark Cave to Violet City. Falkner is currently out, at the Sprout Tower. You battle your way through Sprout Tower, and once you meet Falkner at the top, he returns to his gym.
-At Violet City Gym, you face Falkner, who has a Lv45 Noctowl, a Lv44 Fearow, a Lv46 Dodrio, a Lv47 Togetic, and a Lv48 Pigeot. Upon defeating him, you are granted the Zephyr Badge, allowing use of the Rock Climb app.
-Upon leaving, Professor Elm calls you and asks if you can come back to his lab. When you get there, he gives you the Waterfall app, and upon finding out you have all 8 badges, suggests you go to the Pokemon League. Before you leave, Blaze arrives, and says they've been watching us, watching Maya, and that they think they've learned from us and our bond with our Pokemon what a good trainer is. They challenge us to one last battle. Their team is a Lv48 Raichu, a Lv48 Blissey, a Lv47 Espeon, two of Lv48 Bellossom/Ninetales/Starmie, and a Lv50 Meganium/Typhlosion/Feraligatr. When you win, he thanks you, and declares that they're going to take on the gym challenge as well.
-You travel through the way to the Elite Four the same as in the original games. Just before entering to face the Elite Four, Maya stops you. She says she's been thinking about what Silver told her, and that maybe she had been wrong to focus on being the strongest. She asks you to battle her again to help her figure it out. Her team is a Lv50 Granbull, a Lv50 Rhyperior, a Lv49 Umbreon, two of Lv51 Victreebel/Arcanine/Cloyster, and a Lv52 Meganium/Typhlosion/Feraligatr. After you beat her, she thanks you, and says that she realizes that instead of trying to be the strongest, she should just try and be the best that she can be... which meand THEN she'll be the strongest! (never change, Maya).
-As you enter the Elite Four, the first member you face is Brock. He has a Lv50 Golem, a Lv51 Kabutops, a Lv51 Omastar, a Lv51 Onix, and a Lv52 Aerodactyl.
-The second member is Will. He has a Lv51 Hypno, a Lv52 Girafarig, a Lv52 Slowking, a Lv53 Exeggutor, and a Lv54 Xatu.
-The third member is Misty. She has a Lv53 Politoed, a Lv54 Cloyster, a Lv53 Azumarill, a Lv53 Vaporeon, and a Lv55 Starmie.
-The fourth member is Karen. She has a Lv54 Umbreon, a Lv55 Honchkrow, a Lv56 Weavile, a Lv56 Gengar, and a Lv58 Houndoom.
-As you head up the long staircase to face the champion, the ground suddenly begins to shake, and the lights momentarily go out. You continue to climb the stairs, but when you reach the door at the top, it won't open. As you head back down, a gang of Team Rocket grunts swarm in. They tell you that the building is surrounded, and they're going to keep the Elite Four incapacitated while they carry out their plan. They begin to back you into a corner, but suddenly, Celebi appears. The world around you begins to warp. Suddenly, the Team Rocket grunts have disappeared, and everything seems to be normal.
-You head into the Champion's room and see... Lance? But wasn't he a gym leader now? He seems just as confused as you are, since there wasn't anyone challenging the league. After you explain about Celebi, he tells you that he has heard the myth of a time travelling Pokemon, and that maybe you've been sent back in time. You leave the building with Lance.
-As he begins to wonder how to return you to your own time, he gets a call from Silver. Silver tells him that the Pokemon are going crazy near the Ruins of Alph, and that there are some strange signals being picked up on the Poketch. Lance takes you to Violet City, however as you head to the Ruins of Alph, a great quake begins. The ground begins rising in front of you. You hear a great cry, and you are seperated from Lance as the ground beneath your feet lifts, turning into a new cave. It's six years ago, and the disaster is occuring before your eyes.
-From the Ruins of Alph, you see something fly away. As the sunlight clears, you see Entei/Raikou (the opposite of the boxart legendary) soaring into the sky on wings, surrounded by Unown. Its emits a great glow, and its wings seem to burst into flames/lightning. It falls onto the new cliff face in front of you, now in its original form. As it stares us down, Celebi returns, warping us back to our own time, in Ilex Forest, before disappearing.
-We immediately get a call from Blaze, who is asking if we're okay and is confused that we're in Ilex Forest. They heard that Team Rocket is staging an assault on Indigo Plateau. Suddenly, the same signal starts coming through the Poketch that did six years ago. A broadcast comes on, and you can see Rocket Mask once again making an announcement. He states that six years ago, he failed. But this time, he will succeed. Celebi has shown him the way, and soon, Team Rocket will have the key to world domination.
-You head to the entrance to Union Cave, now unblocked. As soon as you enter, you see Suicune. It roars at you, before running into the cave. You travel through its underground passages, and make your way into the Ruins of Alph.
-The ruins now have a large pillar in the centre, which you seemingly have no way to access. As you head into the ruins, you see Suicune again, at a wall. Suddenly, Unown surround them, and a portion of the wall disappears, revealing a hidden passageway.
-As you get to the end of the passageway, and enter the pillar in the center of the ruins, and see Colress and Rocket Mask. Colress seems alarmed to see you. Rocket Mask asks how you got here, but remarks that it doesn't matter. The screen pans, and you can see Entei/Raikou (your box legendary), surrounded by two chains of Unown, spinning around them like a gyroscope.
-He explains that ever since a fateful encounter with Suicune, he had sought the power of the legendary beasts. 10 years ago, when Team Rocket made their broadcast, he was ashamed to have left them when Giovanni first disbanded the team. To find out that they had even been operating in his old secret hideout brought him great shame. After the news of their defeat broke, he went on a journey. In Ilex Forest, he was suddenly approached by Suicune, and feared Suicune was going to attack him. Suddenly, Celebi arrived, and teleported him back through time, showing him his glory days in Team Rocket as Giovanni's right-hand man. He decided then that this was a sign - that he needed to bring back Team Rocket, and that the Legendary Beasts were how he would do it.
Six years ago, he was approached by Colress, who had experimented with Pokemon before, and had heard of his interest in the beasts. He knew that they had a master who had created them, a legendary Pokemon named Ho-Oh. If they were created by Ho-Oh, they could use its power. By utilizing the power of the Unown, he believed he could combine their power - with a Rainbow Wing/Silver Wing. However, they only used one chain of Unown - they needed two. The beast they captured six years ago broke free, and unleashing their full power caused them to send that energy through the land, reshaping it. While they lost both the beast and the wing, they discovered that there was a second wing - that the Silver Wing was not actually from Ho-Oh, but from Lugia, a Pokemon whose power mirrored Lugia, and that they could use the Silver Wing instead/that they had the wrong wing, and that the Rainbow Wing was needed. Now they have obtained the second wing, and captured another beast.
After their failure six years ago, they felt tremendous shame. Not just for their failure, but for the damage they did. They even destroyed their own town. After that, they could never go back. They had to see this through to the end. They took up the mantle of Rocket Mask, and decided nothing would stop them from taming the beast - least of all, you.
-Rocket Mask removes their mask, revealing themselves to be none other than Pryce, the former leader of the Mahogany Town gym. While Colress finishes combining the beast's power with the wing, Pryce challenges you. He has a Lv55 Weavile, a Lv57 Dewgong, a Lv56 Piloswine, a Lv57 Cloyster, and a Lv59 Mamoswine.
-Upon defeating him, he says it no longer matters - the beast is complete. The Unown chains spin faster, and emit a great glow. The ground begins to shake, and then... suddenly, it ends. The Unown are floating freely, and Entei/Raikou is before you, in the air, flapping its wings. Pryce is amazed, and orders Entei/Raikou to come to him. It roars, and ignores his order. Pryce is shocked and indignant, and demands an explanation from Colress, who doesn't understand why the Unown chains broke apart - they were key to controlling it. Entei/Raikou attacks them, sending them both reeling. It floats before you, waiting.
-You challenge Entei/Raikou, Lv60. Capture or defeat it.
-Once captured/defeated, Pryce demands an explanation, and says he couldn't have been wrong. Suddenly, Celebi descends. It shows Pryce his past again - this time, the day he left Team Rocket. It shows him coming to terms with moving on, and looking forward to the future. Pryce then begins to wonder if he had made a mistake this whole time.
-Suddenly, Looker flies in! He challenges Pryce, before realizing that he has already been defeated. Pryce agrees to come quietly. Colress slips away unnoticed.
-Suddenly, Maya, Blaze, and Professor Elm all fly in seperately. They congratulate you on taking them down, and you all head home together. Roll credits.
-Upon resuming, Maya comes to your house, informing you that the league is shut down at the moment to repair the damage Team Rocket did, and that in the meantime we should go and challenge the Kanto gym leaders!
-You head to Cherrygrove City and take the ferry to Vermillion. When you arrive, Looker is there, and thanks you again for your help taking down Team Rocket. However, the three remaining admins are at large, and they believe they are somewhere in Kanto.
-With one exception, the gyms can now be faced in any order. However, two of them require specific events first. The rest, in no particular order:
-Lt. Surge has a Lv56 Raichu, a Lv57 Electrode, a Lv57 Magneton, and a Lv58 Electivire
-Sabrina has a Lv58 Mr. Mime, a Lv58 Slowbro, a Lv59 Espeon, and a Lv62 Alakazam
-Janine has a Lv55 Ariados, a Lv57 Venomoth, a Lv56 Weezing, and a Lv58 Crobat
-Cinnabar Island has a new artificial extension to keep the town proper out of volcano range, and have fully revuilt the town over the water. Blaine has a Lv58 Rapidash, a Lv58 Arcanine, a Lv57 Magcargo, and a Lv60 Magmortar
-Flint, Brock's father (yes, like in the anime) has taken over Pewter Gym. He has a Lv57 Forretress, a Lv57 Magneton, a Lv58 Skarmory, and a Lv60 Steelix.
-Erika is not at her Gym in Celadon - she can instead be found in front of the disused casino. She is speaking to Looker about Team Rocket sightings in the area. She will not battle you until after all of Team Rocket are fought. If you go inside the Casino, you can find Rocket's original base is in use again, and the rest of the rockets are hiding there. You and Looker go through and find Proton and Ariana there. You battle them. Proton has a Lv55 Golbat, a Lv57 Qwilfish, and a Lv57 Weezing. Ariana has a Lv60 Arbok, a Lv59 Vileplume, and a Lv61 Honchkrow. Looker captures them and takes them away. On their desk, you can see a plan to take over the Power Plant. If you head there, you find Petrel, the last Rocket, skulking around in front. He has three Weezings, Lv60, Lv61, and Lv62. Once defeated, he agrees to come quietly, and Looker thanks you for your assistance. You can now fight Erika.
-Erika has a Lv60 Jumpluff, a Lv61 Victreebel, a Lv61 Vileplume, a Lv60 Bellossom, and a Lv64 Tangrowth.
-In Mt. Moon, you encounter a young girl digging for fossils. She has beige overalls, a braided black ponytail, a hard hat, thick gardening gloves, a white dirt-stained tank top, thick round glasses, and freckles. She tells you her name is Bonnie, and says you're welcome to one of the fossils she's just dug up. At that moment, Maya arrives and tells you she already has 6 of the Kanto badges, but can't find the other two gym leaders. She then challenges you to a battle. She has a Lv64 Granbull, a Lv65 Espeon, a Lv64 Rhyperior, two of Lv65 Victreebel/Arcanine/Cloyster, and a Lv66 Meganium/Typhlosion/Feraligatr. After you beat her, Bonnie offers you both a fossil (you pick between Dome and Helix) and she awkwardly says that she's acfually the new Viridian City Gym Leader, and heads back to her gym. You can now challenge her.
-Bonnie has a Lv63 Quagsire, a Lv64 Pupitar, a Lv64 Donphan, a Lv65 Gliscor, and a Lv67 Nidoqueen.
-Upon passing the front of Cerulean Gym, Lorelei will appear. She informs you that this gym is closed now that Misty is in the E4. She retired from the Elite Four years ago to look after her home in the Sevii Islands, but got offered the Gym Leader position here. She arranged for a new gym to be made in the Sevii Islands instead, and to come visit her once you have the other 7 badges. You can travel there from Vermillion.
-At Lorelei's gym on Four Island, you can battle her once you have the other 7 Kanto badges. She has a Lv65 Delibird, a Lv66 Dewgong, a Lv67 Jynx, a Lv67 Glaceon, and a Lv68 Lapras. Once defeated, she grants you the Snow Badge.
-With 16 Badges, you are ready to take on the league again.
-As before, the first member you face is Brock. He has a Lv67 Golem, a Lv68 Kabutops, a Lv68 Omastar, a Lv69 Steelix, a Lv69 Rhyperior, and a Lv70 Aerodactyl.
-The second member is Will. He has a Lv69 Hypno, a Lv70 Wobbuffet, a Lv70 Girafarig, a Lv70 Slowking, a Lv70 Exeggutor, and a Lv71 Xatu.
-The third member is Misty. She has a Lv70 Politoed, a Lv69 Cloyster, a Lv70 Azumarill, a Lv71 Vaporeon, a Lv71 Golduck, and a Lv73 Starmie.
-The fourth member is Karen. She has a Lv71 Umbreon, a Lv72 Honchkrow, a Lv71 Weavile, a Lv72 Gengar, a Lv73 Muk, and a Lv74 Houndoom.
-Finally, you climb the stairs up to the champion, once again. No interruptions from Team Rocket this time. You open the door.
-Silver greets you. He thanks you for yoir work in defeating Team Rocket, and says he doesn't know what would have happened if you hadn't been there. He apologizes for not being able to fight last time, but as the Pokemon League Champion, he will hold nothing back. Silver has a Lv74 Crobat, a Lv73 Weavile, a Lv74 Magnezone, a Lv76 Gengar, a Lv75 Alakazam, and a Lv78 Tyranitar.
-As you defeat him, he congratulates you, and says he knew you had it in you. That he hadn't faced a trainer like you in a decade. He takes you to the hall of fame, and swears you in as the new Pokemon League Champion.
Roll credits, again.
-Finally, as champion, you now have access to Mt. Silver. And who is on top the mountain... but Ethan/Lyra, standing in the spot where they once defeated Red. They say nothing. The battle begins. They have a Lv82 Red Gyarados, a Lv81 Ampharos, a Lv83 Meganium, a Lv83 Typhlosion, a Lv83 Feraligatr, and a Lv85 Togekiss.

Hello I have more Welsh questions I hope thatâs okay!
As always, the Duolingo disclaimer because some of their choices seem suspect. Like the first word they made sure to teach me was draig and it did seem a little racist to suggest to me THIS IS GOING TO COME UP A LOT IN WALES YOU HAD BETTER LEARN IT. Of course maybe Iâm racist for assuming thatâs connected to the Welsh mysticism nonsense and not the flag, or maybe draig does come up often on the streets of Aberteifi. I am here to learn with an open mind and minimal ego.
Anyway. Question one is indeed about places.
1. How do you decide whether a place needs a y with it? I canât seem to tell, some countries have it and some donât which confuses this dumb American. Plus it seems like no cities have it?
2. Also on the topic of cities, I can understand that there are places in Wales that have English names and that some donât. Looks like Abertawe : Swansea v Aberystwyth : Aberystwyth. Two parter - part one, why did some get renamed while others stayed Welsh? Part two, is it preferred to just use the Welsh name? Iâm wondering what common practice/preference is.
3. On the topic of common practice, I have a question that I am desperately trying to make as inoffensive as possible because itâs really about the trustworthiness of Duolingo than anything else. But itâs teaching me words that I want to make sure are appropriate. Ysgrifenydd/ysgrifennyddes and gĆ”r tĆ·/gwraig tĆ·. Are these still appropriate to use?
Thank you so much! I know youâre not the Welsh ambassador to the internet (or are you??) so I appreciate you being so generous with everyone đ
I am, of course, 100% the Welsh ambassador to the internet. Or at least, I work in the Tumblr consulate. Ignore the people who say I'm just some random with airs and graces, they're just jealous and you're not to listen.
Okay, so:
1. Definite Articles and Placenames. It's not so much a thing you need to work out grammatically as it is just... part of the name. This sometimes happens in English too - Netherlands is an acceptable country name now, but originally it would have been the Netherlands, just because that's what the name meant. The lands that are low lying.
Welsh just has more country names than English that mean something like that, I think. Some are the same, e.g. (the) Netherlands/(yr) Iseldiroedd; that's a fairly one to one translation, in fact. Some are the same, but a bit more literal than the English has become; Switzerland (the Land of the Swiss) has lost the "the" in English by now, but in Welsh it still clings on as y Swistir.
And then sometimes, we have a very different word for somewhere, but it's no longer clear what the fossilised grammar was. I suppose the biggest example of that is Scotland - yr Alban. It's a bit lost to time, now, but 'Alban' has the same Old Irish root there as the word 'Albion'. Why the definite article? Unknown.
But, we do it for smaller places too, including cities. Welshpool's Welsh name is y Trallwng, which means, like, "the boggy pool", and I suppose it was once a notable enough bog that it was THE bog when giving directions, so the article stayed. This also spills over into Wenglish - the Hafod and the Gower in/around Swansea should both more correctly be Hafod and Gower, but at some point it was THE hafod when giving directions, and the Gower is the abbreviation of the Gower peninsula.
Anyway: TL;DR it's just part of the name, rather than a grammatical choice.
2. Translated Placenames. Part 1:
The short of it is, "Did enough English people settle there that they needed an English name/ the Welsh became Anglicised?" That's usually the rule. Sometimes this meant Anglicisation (Caerdydd-Cardiff), sometimes a ropey-to-exact translation (Penybont - Bridgend), and sometimes a completely new name (Abertawe - Swansea), depending on how easy the Welsh was to say and whether or not there was feature of note that the English focused on.
Occasionally, though, you get the opposite - Wrexham was Wrexham first, and got Cymricised to Wrecsam. It's a rare example of an English city we nicked, see. Founded by the Saxon house of Mercia, on land they'd nicked from north Wales, and then the Welsh reclaimed the area and went 'Ooh, nice city, was this here before?' It's possible it was first called Caer Fantell in Welsh, but it was Gwrexham by the 13th century, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Part 2: You use the name in the language you're speaking, UNLESS it is under active contention for some reason. The national parks are currently pushing to only be known by their Welsh names, for example, ditto a few of the mountains; so, Eryri instead of Snowdonia, Bannau Brycheiniog instead of Brecon Beacons, and yr Wyddfa instead of Snowdon. Also, in recent years they started inventing English language names for villages in Gwynedd for English tourists to feel more comfortable with, which has caused the outrage you'd expect; but those won't be coming up on Duolingo.
With that said, it's sometimes a Welsh Nash signal to only use the Welsh placenames even in English, so don't be surprised if you see people do it.
3. Appropriate words. Not sure what you mean by appropriate here, but I'm guessing you mean because they're gendered terms?
Welsh is a gendered language; that's how it works. In the modern day, there is a slide towards a lot of the old 'feminine' endings being dropped in favour of the masculine becoming used as a gender neutral term, but that's still under development; officially and formally, you still gender it.
I certainly prefer Not doing that. My first two graduate jobs were Conservation Officer and Conservation Manager; my preference was to use Swyddog Cadwraeth and Rheolwr Cadwraeth in Welsh. But others (usually older generations) would write Swyddoges Gadwraeth and Rheolwraig Gadwraeth sometimes, which I personally thought was a bit old fashioned and patronising.
But, I know middle aged women who prefer it, because it makes it clear that it's a woman doing the job. One person's oppression is another's liberation and all that. Also, cis though I am, I am admittedly not always comfortable with the strict trappings of gender, and that probably plays a part.
Bonus answer: dragons are the national animal and very much a symbol of identity, so that's just them being cute lol
Anyway! Thank you so much for trying to learn Welsh! Croeso a diolch.

"Listen, all of you. I've got the perfect thing planned."
Watching their expressions with the air of a circus conjurer, you drew a small leather bag from your jerkin. As you shook it, the contents emitted the pleasant chime and clink of something valuable.Â
Wyll grinned, one finger tapping his chin.
"If I'm not mistaken, you got lucky with a hunter's stash."
Eyes closed and brow furrowed in concentration as he listened to the sounds from within the bag, Astarion nodded sharply.
"You're not mistaken at all Wyll. My darling has found ... let me see ... two diamonds, one jacinth shard, unpolished ... and a tourmaline ring."
A profound silence reigned after this statement. You snorted in amusement and Gale raised an eyebrow.
"Well. A rogue always has his uses, it seems."
You gave Astarion a bow, which he returned, his wrist circling in a mocking flourish.
"Correct, Astarion. And, since I found this little treasure, I've decided what we're going to do with it."
Lae'zel folded her arms.
"One can never have enough weapons."
Karlach groaned.
"Oh, come off. We've done nothing but arm ourselves to the teeth since the beginning. Let's do something else!"
You nodded, a small smile curving your mouth.
"I'm actually with Karlach on this one. Listen, protecting ourselves is important, and an absolute necessity. But we've picked up some good gear on the way here and it's about time we looked after our morale too."
Shadowheart raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
"All right, I hear you. What do you have in mind?"
You clapped your hands together and beamed around.
"Clothes shopping. I mean, look at us. Most of what we're wearing is holding on by a thread and prayer and we've never prioritized that on the road here. Plus, there're all the recent battles we've been through, both in the city and out of it. Let's get ourselves a few outfits. Have a bath in a proper tub. Have a nice meal. No harm in that, is there?"
You heard cheers and murmurs of assent all round and nodded in satisfaction. Only Lae'zel still seemed put out by the need for what she termed 'frivolous nonsense'. Wyll patted her shoulder placatingly.
"You'll see what we mean soon enough, Lae'zel. Just join us. You won't regret it. Think of it as ... learning yet another Faerûnian custom."
Once your party had reached the city, you decided to split into groups in order to peruse the variety of clothing stores and boutiques on offer. You set upon the Elfsong Tavern as the place to meet after your shopping had been completed.
Your group consisted of Astarion, Lae'zel and Gale, while Wyll set off in the opposite direction with Shadowheart and Karlach.
Astarion took it upon himself to guide you, considering his familiarity with the surrounds.
"Oh, there's much less variety than what's on offer in the Upper City, darling, but there are a few good spots that not many people know about. There are merchants that import fine fabrics, and not everyone is aware of this, but they also employ skilled tailors who will make you a custom fit on request."
Gale looked impressed.
"You certainly know a lot about this, Astarion."
His compliment was waved off airily.
"Of course. I do know a thing or two about fashion."
You examined Astarion carefully as he said the words. There was something more here, some bitter undercurrent to the way he spoke. You knew him well enough by now to recognise when he was hiding an emotion dredged up by unpleasant memories.
You decided not to question him on it immediately. There was a time and place for everything.
Lae'zel was still looking decidedly unenthusiastic. As you meandered through the streets, she clicked her tongue and suddenly entered a shop on the left.
You paused before shrugging and entering behind her. It was a clothing store after all, one of the kind that sold rougher cuts for hard travel and the road.
Wandering amongst the wares on display in wicker baskets, you recognised a lot of familiar items, the colours perfect for camouflage, the homespun fabrics, the sturdy boots. Astarion turned his nose up at the selection, but this didn't deter Lae'zel.
She walked through the store in a straight line, picking up a shirt, trousers, underwear and boots and returned to you, a satisfied expression on her face.
"See? Shopping doesn't have to be an affair for the day. I've already picked out what I need. Now you do the same and we can go and find something far more worthy to spend our money on."
You shot a pleading glance at Gale and Astarion, both of whom rose admirably to the occasion.
Astarion came forward slowly, eyeing the clothes in Lae'zel's hand with a critical eye.
"Hmm. Hmm. I suppose ... no. Not at all. Not really. How ... disappointing."
"What do you mean?" she snapped, "What's disappointing?"
He bit his lip, shaking his head.
"It's just ... during all of our travels together, I actually have come to admire the kind of warrior you are, Lae'zel. You're certainly the fiercest I've known, and that's saying something. So ... and it pains me to say this, but ... this choice just isn't ... you."
Gale nodded in agreement, raising one finger as he explained himself.
"To put it in plain terms, a powerful githyanki like yourself should be dressed in colours and fabrics that exude ... intimidation. Power. Flair. These ... dusty road clothes don't quite cut it."
You glanced over at Lae'zel whose brow was now furrowed deeply, considering the items she'd chosen. She set them down and folded her arms.
"And I suppose you lot know what would suit a warrior like me?"
In spite of her challenging tone, you let out a breath of relief. This was Lae'zel's manner of giving in, somewhat, her way of showing her trust in the knowledge and abilities of her companions.
Astarion perked up and grinned.
"Oh trust me on this, Lae'zel. By the end of today, you'll be looking truly fearsome."
"Then lead on."
Across town, Wyll was facing a few challenges of his own. Shadowheart turned out to be exceptionally picky about what she spent her money on, and the higher the quality, the more her judgment of all of its minute flaws came to the fore.
Karlach, on the other hand, was so easily distracted by things other than clothing that they'd had to stay her hand away from her purse on more than one occasion when she saw a trinket or gadget that caught her eye.
Mind racing, Wyll finally hit upon a solution to the issue at hand, deciding to visit a store he knew of that catered to both their needs.
There was a certain company he knew that stocked both exclusive items for theatre actors, jewellry, props and hand-carved items of all kinds. He led them to the front door of the establishment and shot the two ladies a smile.
"So, this is a place I've known about for a while. Came here with my father a few times when we had costume parties and he wanted me to wear something unique."
When they entered, Karlach looked around in delight.
"Oh, Wyll! This is perfect! Look at all of these hats and horn ornaments! I can't believe how hard it is to find anything horn-related in this place."
Shadowheart, meanwhile, had hurried over to a selection of dark plum, cobalt and emerald-dyed dresses, eyeing them with ill-concealed longing. Wyll raised an eyebrow.
All Shadowheart's clothing choices thus far had been singularly streamlined and fitted to her form for ease in battle. He hadn't put her down for someone who preferred frills and flounces.
Clearing his throat, he approached and gestured to the dresses.
"Care to try them on? I'll ask the proprietor to - "
She backed off, hands raised almost defensively.
"Oh, no, not at all. I was just ... looking."
Wyll pulled one of the dresses, a deep violet silk, from the rack and held it up against her.
"Well now. That colour looks simply splendid on you, Shadowheart. We can't have you leaving here without trying it out."
Karlach bounded over, a red leather pointed hat sitting perfectly over her horns.
"Oooh, smashing! You've got to take that!"
Shadowheart's mouth opened and closed a few times as she uttered some faint protests, but was soon convinced to choose some dresses and make her way to the changing screens.
Wyll gestured to Karlach's outfit.
"And what'll it be for you, milady?"
She giggled and cleared her throat, adopting a coquettish pose.Â
"Well, aren't you a right charmer? What do you recommend for my strapping frame, good saer?"
Wyll held up his hands excitedly.
"So, when I was young, there was this stage actor, Lady Zenith, who took the city by storm. She played a pirate queen and I saw some of her appearances. Just fantastic. A lot of costume stores still sell clothes inspired by some of her looks, and I'm sure this place does too. I think they'll suit you perfectly."
Karlach's eyes were now gleaming in anticipation.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Show me the goods, man!"
This time, you'd taken Astarion's reccomendation into account and followed him to a different store, closer to the Upper City, that specialised in outfits for adventurers and mercenaries who were looking to make an impression at events and parties.
Lae'zel now seemed far more invested, and you also grew excited as you saw the array of clothing that shouted of wealth earned the rough and violent way.
Embroidered jerkins, leather braces and belts, embossed hats and smart trousers adorned the shelves, along with dress swords and scabbards, ruffled blouses, trimmed boots and fur cloaks.
You tugged Lae'zel through the store, and you could practically see the appeal of this activity open up in golden avenues before her eyes as you held up dashing outfits in blood red, dark green and black against her.
You handed her a few items to try on before finding a jewel-toned blouse, comfortable padded trousers and boots for yourself. Finally detaching yourself from the siren's call of colours and fabrics, you noticed that Gale was no longer in the store.
"Where'd he go?"
Astarion gestured vaguely somewhere in the region of the shop across the street.
"Said he saw something he liked over there."
Crimson eyes were flicking perceptively over your clothing choices. Hesitantly, you held them up for his inspection.
"Do they look nice?"
"They look wonderful, darling. Hold on."
He reached over your shoulder, thoroughly distracting you with the way his breath fanned across your collarbones and plucked something from a shelf above your head. He held it against the blouse you had chosen and you spied a delicate broach in gold filigree, a starling with a garnet eye.
"Oh, that's beautiful!" you breathed.
You made to take it from him, but he flipped the piece quickly out of your reach.
"No, sweetheart. This is my gift to you. I've been ... saving up a little too."
Something about those words tightened your throat, the bruised sweetness of a summer fruit, painful as it was poignant.
When you'd first met him, it had been obvious that Astarion had very little to his name. His clothes, in spite of their former grandeur, had been darned and repaired many times over, their gold threadwork faded. His belongings were all mismatched remnants of a time of wealth.
He had scrounged every ounce of gold he'd found in the field, and in battle, hoarding it with almost obsessive desire, the kind that comes from knowing the state of being truly destitute.
And to think that this same man was now offering up his gold to buy you something as frivolous as a piece of jewelry. You knew better than to turn him down. You'd wear his gift, and treasure it well.
You couldn't help notice, however, that Astarion had not picked out any outfits for himself.
"Arent you going to get anything?"
His gaze slid away from yours, traveling around the store as he spoke.
"Oh, I'm holding out for now. I want to find something I really like before committing. You know how it is."
Expression growing hard, you tugged at his sleeve, gaining his attention.
"Listen here, handsome. I didn't get my hands on those diamonds to dress you up in drow armour all over again."
His eyes widened slightly at your tone, fangs sliding into view as he smiled.
"Oh my. Are you annoyed with me, dearest?"
"No, but I will be if you don't pick something. And I don't care if you find something better elsewhere. I'll buy that for you too. And I'll buy anything else that takes your fancy."
"Gods below, it's so enticing when you shower me with adoration like this - "
"Astarion."
He uttered a small laugh, a genuine sound that caused an alarming flutter of uncontrollable tenderness in your chest.
"Well, if you insist. But you've got to help me pick them out. I can't see my own reflection after all."
You cocked your head.
"Is that why you didn't want to choose anything?"
He traced a finger over the laquered wood of the shelving before answering.
"Not quite. You see, when we served under Cazador, he made us dress according to ... his specifications. We could wear nice things, but they were all chosen by him. Owned by him. We had to return them immediately after use. It's ... not easy for me to accept such gifts."
"Oh ... I didn't realise. I'm - "
"Don't apologise."
His tone was sharp, only softened by the warmth of his glance.
"I know you. I know why you're gifting me things. It's the same way I gift you this broach. We do it ... as equals. Partners. Lovers. Nothing more, or less. We do it because we want to."
Wordlessly, you took his hand, bringing his fingers to your lips and holding them there. Astarion tugged your hand towards him, placing a soft reciprocal kiss on your own knuckles.
"Now, are you going to help me choose or not?"
He released you and sauntered away, shooting you his trademark smirk over one shoulder.
"And don't even think about sneaking a look behind the screens while I get changed."
"Wouldn't dream of it. And you're going to lace yourself into those fancy shirts, I suppose?"
"Never fear, darling. I'll be crying out for you just the way you like."
"Shadowheart? Are you all right in there?"
"What? Oh, I'm ... fine."
Karlach and Wyll exchanged glances. Adjusting the red leather hat over her horns (which she seemed rather loathe to part with) Karlach cleared her throat.
"Come on. We want to see you in the dress."
"It's all right. I've tried them all on. I think I ... "
"Shadowheart, I hate to insist, but we really want to see you in those dresses. We can't leave here with nothing."
Wyll's polite, but firm tone seemed to do the trick. The screen parted slightly before Shadowheart took a large stride out, almost tripping over her skirts.
She looked like a goddess descended from a more radiant plane than earth, that was for sure. The gown she wore composed a supple bodice, flowing skirts, fan-like sleeves and a brocade collar, turquoise shot through with pale green embroidery.
Karlach gasped and clapped, while Wyll spread his hands effusively.
"Stunning!"
"Oh hells! Why on earth were you hiding back there?"
Shadowheart's posture had been so stiff, it looked like she was practicing military drills, but under their positive response, she relaxed somewhat.Â
"Um. To tell you the truth ... I've always ... been partial to gowns like these, but I think ... I'd been told that they didn't belong on me. On someone like me, I think."
Wyll disappeared briefly behind the screens and re-emerged with the other gowns in hand.
"Well, I think these are well spotted. They'll all look marvelous."
Shadowheart eyed him skeptically.
"That's all well and good, but what about you, Wyll? I haven't seen you try anything on yourself."
Karlach nodded eagerly.
"Oh, go on. You're a fancy man, I reckon. Could do with some ruffles and tight pants."
Wyll snorted.
"I think you've got me mistaken for Astarion."
"Your arse is better."
"Karlach ... never let him hear you say that. And I mean never."
"Lae'zel, I never expected you to be so insightful regarding colour combinations."
"I'm good at most things. This should come as no surprise."
Astarion snapped his fingers.
"Ah, there she is. The Lae'zel we know and love."
Tucking away your own wrapped purchases into your rucksack, you frowned as you glanced out the door.
"We need to find Gale. Where on earth has he wandered off to?"
You followed Lae'zel and Astarion out into the street, examining the shopfronts for any sign of the stray wizard. A little further down the street, Lae'zel stopped so abruptly that you walked nose-first into the hilt of her sword.
"Ouch! What are you - "
"Be silent," she hissed.
Instantly, you were on the alert, hand snaking toward your weapon.
"What is it? Vlaakith's troops?"
"No. Worse."
Astarion drifted closer to your side, eyes scanning the street like a bird of prey.
"Don't keep us in suspense."
"It's Gale. Wearing some kind of ... monstrosity."
Hissing out a sharp breath, you shot her a glare.
"Why on earth would you make me panic like - "
"Shut up and look. It's ... truly horrifying."
Astarion had apparently forgotten his nerves in a second and gleefully sprang up on a low wall behind Lae'zel to get a better look across the crowded street, almost hanging piggyback off her.
"What is it? What could our dearest Gale be up to? Could it be - "
Gale chose that moment to exit the shop he had made his purchase at, a singularly self-satisfied expression on his face. As for what he was wearing ...
You hurriedly schooled your face into warm surprise when he saw you and waved, approaching eagerly.
"Oh, you'll never guess what I found. This used to be all the rage at Waterdeep when I was a lad, especially amongst the scholars."
Astarion deflated, arms draping limply across Lae'zel's shoulders.
"Gods below, don't get my hopes up like that. I thought he was cross-dressing for a minute."
It was a testament to how transfixed the githyanki was by Gale's outfit that she didn't attempt to dislodge Astarion from his perch.
"Gale. What is ... that you have on?"
The item in question resembled a robe, one much shorter that ended just below the waist. It was made from some kind of fluffy material, the colours pleasant enough, but strange to look at. Buttons came all the way up the front and it was clearly made for cooler weather.
Gale gestured to the garment proudly.
"Oh, this is a cardigan. Never see one before, I take it?"
"It's horrid," she blurted out, ignoring the way your eyes bulged and the fact that Astarion had now clapped a hand over his mouth.
Gale, fortunately, had developed something of a thick skin where Lae'zel was concerned. He waved her disgusted look away.
"Oh, come on. Give it a chance. If a whole city once thought it looked good then - "
"That city deserves to be razed to the ground."
He grimaced and turned to you.
"And your verdict?"
You shook your head hurriedly.
"Oh, I don't share her opinion. It looks comfortable and simple. Perfect for a ... wizard."
Astarion cleared his throat and you groaned internally.
"Oh, absolutely, darling. I just ... hope he never wore that around Mystra, because quite frankly, that would explain so much - "
Whirling on your heel you made a cutting motion with your hand. He was presenting an unusually united front with Lae'zel in their hatred of the cardigan.
"What is wrong with you both? He looks ... normal."
Gale sighed and folded his arms. He was getting that stubborn look on his face, the one that probably made the Weave quiver and entertain thoughts along the line of "Here we go again."
"Well, my apologies for offending your senses, but I will be wearing this every day from now on, considering how cold the weather's getting."
Lae'zel grunted as if struck with an arrow.
"You wouldn't."
"Oh, I would."
"I'll destroy it."
"You could try."
Raising your hands, you stepped between them.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, you lot. Gale, you're perfectly entitled to wear whatever you want - "
"I would certainly think so!"
"And Lae'zel, whatever your reservations, let's try to be civil, yes?"
She folded her arms and looked to be deeply in thought for a minute. Head snapping up, she approached Gale who regarded her warily.
"Wizard. I can't change your mind regarding this ... regrettable choice, but would you humour me on one thing?"
"And what's that?"
"Undo the buttons. It looks ... odd. Like a human in a sausage casing."
"She's right, Gale," chimed in Astarion, "The Weave works so much better when you show it some chest hair."
Gale raised an eyebrow.
"Probably why it never works for you then."
"Ooh, I love it when you get nasty."
The Elfsong Tavern was packed to the brim, the heat of many bodies, the sweet thrum of a lyre and the chatter of a myriad voices spilling into the dark streets. Your party had trekked their way upstairs to the refuge of your private quarters, leaving the door open in a mild concession to socialising.
The occasional patron would sway up the stairs and drink a toast to your good company.
To round off a day well-spent on treating yourselves, you'd ordered up some of the taverns finest ales, wines and dishes, laid out on a long table in the central area. Your companions took some time to bathe and dress themselves in their new finery before meandering over to the small feast.
Wyll looked sleek and elegant in a mahogany and gold coat, dark trousers and embroidered shoes. He lounged on the sofa beside Gale, who stubbornly persisted on donning his cardigan over a comfortable pair of woollen pants.
Studiously avoiding Gale, Lae'zel stood at the head of the table, a roast leg of lamb in one hand, her resplendent green doublet slashed through with blood red, providing an intimidating, if reassuring familiarity.
Karlach was currently downstairs, ordering more drinks from the bar, so you made your way over to Shadowheart and Astarion who were standing together by the hearth. You caught the tail end of their conversation.
"Purple looks a bit ripe on you, darling. Sort of like a plum that's been left in the dark for too long."
"Hmm. I suppose you think that white looks dashing on you. All it does it highlight your pallor."
"I am a vampire. I have to cultivate a certain otherworldly appeal. You on the other hand ... were you going for pauper princess banished from the kingdom?"
"More like assassin princess. A romantic image, you know? I have to wonder at those red highlights on your coat, though. What was the intention there? That you'd dribbled your dinner all over yourself?"
Attempting to hide the way your mouth twitched, you gestured to their clothes.
"I think you both look lovely."
"Oh, my sweet, how kind of you to say that about Shadowheart."
"Indeed. Astarion seems to think he has monopoly over good looks. It's nice to hear him corrected on that front."
Even as she spoke, she reached across and impatiently brushed away a thread from his coat.
"Gods, that was irritating. Now that's better."
Astarion regarded her sourly before clicking his tongue.
"Hold on. Your eyeliner is slightly smudged."
You took a sip of your wine, grinning to yourself as he fussed a little, correcting the stray mark beside her eye.
"There." He gave a dismissive wave of his hand. "Can't quite compete with me, but I suppose pale hair does look good on you."
"Likewise," she sniffed, before shooting you a smile and wandering off to find Karlach.
You finally let out the small laugh you'd been holding prisoner.
"Good to see you two getting along."
He huffed and made a show of adjusting his cuffs.
"I don't know what you're talking about, my sweet. What's that, in your goblet? A quality vintage, I hope?"
You allowed him to pilfer it out of your hand, eyes traveling across to where Lae'zel had now joined Wyll and Gale, stiffly complimenting them on their clothes.
"I think we needed this. A chance to unwind a little. Spoil ourselves."
Astarion drifted closer, fingers grazing the broach you now wore at your collar in place of honour.
"Indeed. You always seem to know ... exactly what we require. Even when we don't know it ourselves."
You turned and met his gaze, noting how the lightness of his tone betrayed the depth of feeling that was reflected there, just beneath the surface.
Regarding him with a tender smile, you extended a hand as the bard downstairs struck up a merry tune.
"Shall we dance?"
He sank into a gallant bow, fangs glinting in the dim light, and took up your offer, arm curling intimately around your waist as he pulled you close.
"Let's show them how it's done."
As you swept across the floor, swaying and dipping with Astarion's light guidance, you saw Wyll leap up and clap his hands, immediately inviting Lae'zel to dance with him.
She scowled and folded her arms, but Gale was always one step ahead.
"Oh, go on, Lae'zel. Weren't you the one who told us you could do just about anything?"
He stood and approached her.
"Of course, you could always dance with me instead. Get a firsthand feel of how soft and fleecy this cardigan is - "
She took a step back, an impressive feat on Gale's part.
"Fine! I'll partake of a ... turn with Wyll. Just this once."
Your dance was brought to an abrupt end when Karlach set the drinks down at the table with a resounding thump and cackled gleefully, wrapping her arms around you, hoisting until you and Astarion were both airborne on either side of her.
"Oh, you two precious things! Thanks for the treat, soldier. Just look at my hat!"
Astarion eyed the red leather dubiously.
"Looks like something right out of a sex dungeon."
"Even better!"
Breathless with laughter as Karlach whirled you around, singing loudly, you tipped the brim of her hat down and placed a kiss on Astarion's cheek, watching the softness build in his eyes, the burnished beauty of the firelight on his gleaming hair.
Seeing them all like this, these companions who'd wormed their way into your heart faster than any mindflayer tadpole, was well worth the battles that had brought you to this point.
You'd see this through, banishing the shadows from their lives one by one until light and merriment pervaded every living moment together.
And damn it all if you didn't look fabulous doing so.
