Just wanna point a thing I noticed out

On Reddit I made a post celebrating Gwyn and appreciating her, holding space for her fans because I saw some complaints about how all elriels ever do is put Elain on a pedestal.

Well I held space for Gwyn, only one person came to comment “see you tomorrow shadowsinger.” And that hurt my heart for the character tbh. So I’m going to continue to hold space for Gwyn love.

I won’t delete criticism, however absolute intolerance for rude people, if you would like to discuss something politely please feel free to but remember this is a post for Gwyn Love. I’d rather see people put this energy into saying their favorite things about Gwyn.

(After criticism in comments I took a part of this out because it was a backhanded way to insult Gwyn fans for not loving her in a way I deemed right so I corrected myself, it’s of course up to the individual how they love a character, I just hope people also love her for more than a ship at the end of the day. Because I do stand by that criticism: Gwyn is more than a ship. )

As miss bedara said “our stories are worth telling.” And her story is not just related to shipping. The ship wars have taken her captive and made everyone forget what an amazing character she is.

something so funny and also so sad about seeing people on twitter say "watch campaign 3 for imodna, the sapphic ship in media that has more screentime than any other!" but without any actual reasons why it's a good ship or a good campaign or like. any reason other than "two women are together on screen for a long time." okay. cool. not a useful recommendation. reminds me of those book recs that just list the pieces of representation it includes without telling you anything about the plot or genre

so this was the topic my really mean draft post was about and frankly I lack the rancor to post it in full because I kind of just feel sorry for these people. but it really is like...have we considered that most of the 30+ year old wlw in the fandom who are old enough to remember The Bad Days when your options were like. Xena, The L Word, those two lesbians on Queer as Folk (US), Samantha on Sex and the City sometimes maybe, or getting super into anime before it was cool are like. anyway. And have we considered that the main defense of this ship is "it's onscreen for a period of time that is greater than some other ships that have been onscreen," and not like, connection, or romance. Like, most people's orgasms are shorter than their dentist visits (though hopefully more frequent) but one of these things is more enjoyable, you know?

This could go for any ship, especially popular ones, but I do get a little tickled whenever someone goes "SatoSugu is boring".

And the tone is sometimes so clear they just want to hate to hate.

Someone please, I beg, someone please tell me when it became a rule that a ship had to be made for the interest of only one person and their picky tastes?

Trying to figure out not why you think it's boring, but why the ship has to made specifically for you to not find it boring.

So what if it's "boring"? Guess what, guess what.

Some people just so happen to like "boring".

Some people also don't happen to find the ship boring.

I like other ships, too, and I sometimes don't indulge in SatoSugu. But... I don't know...

I'm not surprised that people will find it boring. Every popular ship that its haters or people just not interested in it.

It's just the tone that is used that kind of hints to me that person making the declaration of "SatoSugu is boring" is someone who is on that "I want to be a hater" train. It's some of those kind of people who just want to cause a little bit of chaos for a laugh.

I don't think everyone who finds the ship boring a hater. Not interested in something doesn't equal hating.

It's how you use your words.

If you go "Eh, I'm not really interested in the ship, it's not my thing, it's boring to me" then yeah, it's just not your thing.

But if you go "this is boring, why do people like it, my ship is better" it hints to me that you're just a hater. Someone who isn't interested in a ship wouldn't question why other people like it or pit it against another ship.

All you are doing really is pushing people away.

And if you're bringing up another ship, you don't like that ship for real. No, you don't because you wouldn't feel the need to bash another ship to show your love for it. What you would do is say why you like that ship WITHOUT the need for bashing another ship.

If I wanted someone to check out my ship I would wait for that opening.

"Eh, that isn't my thing."

"Okay, what ship do you like?"

"Oh, this ship."

This is a bit of a read but I've spent a long time thinking and editing, and I'm saying this all gently but seriously.

I imagine the above was NOT intentionally said to prick anyone's emotions, but this kind of comment on Rare Omens prompts is like saying it about any of them. It reminds me that so many of these pairs are only tolerated at best by the majority of folks in the fandom. (Every one of these prompts has people who don't like or even actively hate them. Take a look at the prompt list in our pinned post, and marvel at that statement but know it to be true.)

This prompt month event has a "don't like? ignore it and move on" policy. Trust me from experience with my own rare ships: we hear the disgust or hate enough, we know others aren't into it.

If you don't like something, that's okay! If you want to talk about not liking it, that's also okay. BUT PLEASE don't reply to people who are clearly having their fun in a post. It's not necessary and it only makes people feel badly to see it directly in the notifs. It only digs away at feeling welcome to whatever we get from enjoying a pair (or OT3, or polycule, etc). And that can lead to feeling unwelcome in the wider fandom the rest of the time... which is absolutely devastating to feel.

You can post separately and start a conversation to find people who feel similarly if you feel strongly and want to have those conversations—though hating on rare pairs/characters is common and such posts are probably not necessary. Anyone doing so: please DO NOT TAG a ship in your tags when hating on it. Bc the people most likely searching that tag? They DO like it, and don't need to wade through a bunch of negative comments to find fellow fans.

I started Rare Omens bc it was hard to find transformative works for ships I liked (be it as a couple or ANY OTHER way you can pair characters up—as a reminder: it doesn't have to be NSFW; it doesn't have to be SFW either of course). I wanted to find other people who enjoyed what I enjoyed. And to help people experiment with making stories and art they otherwise might never have thought about. And it has gone really well! I've seen NSFW ships, and friend ships, and respected enemies, hated enemies, and AUs of all shapes. Participants over the years have mentioned that they never would've thought to try writing certain characters in stories or draw them off on adventures. THAT, I love. We know there's ever anyone out there excited for their faves and waiting for it.

I also want to say...

I saw this reply earlier today but I was out at a showing of Macbeth where I made the acquaintance of a bunch of Good Omens fans (ranging in age from 20s to 60s at a guess). One of them even cosplays Metatron, and their Crowley and Aziraphale showed pics. It was real fun to see them include a rarer character in their cosplay group. I didn't have a chance to reply to this until now, and I'm glad I waited. I'm thinking about that cosplayer too: it can be disheartening to see "your" rare character excluded from the fun of transformative works.

Right. All this to say:

Please be kind to your fellow fans, even when they're playing with the dolls in ways you would never.

We don't have to force ourselves to like anything or interact with it (in fact: don't interact, talk privately to your friends who understand), but we gotta let people have their sandbox too. Because if we're excluding our weirdest and wildest takes, the most gloriously crackfic pairings possible, then we're not safe for anyone. We're not transforming anything.

I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how Nam-gyu hates women (which is fair), but I haven’t heard anyone mention that he basically hates everyone.

Out of everyone this man interacts with, the only characters he doesn’t directly insult are Thanos and Gyeong-su. But as soon as Thanos dies, he grumbles and talks shit about Thanos too (though I think part of him actually misses/cares about Thanos, but that’s a whole different story. He has a love/hate relationship with Thanos) and he mostly ignores Gyeong-su apart from laughing at him when Gyeong-su talks to Thanos for the first time.

He definitely hates Se-mi, but he also hates Myung-gi, Min-su, In-ho, and everyone who voted x. He’s such a hater and I live for it.

If I recall correctly, Se-mi is the only woman he interacts with and he hates her because she stands up to him and makes fun of his shaky hands. And that’s petty of him to hate her for that, but he’s petty! He hates people who challenge him or go against him in any way or people who point out his flaws because he seems to hate coming across as weak or not having any power.

Also maybe I’m taking this too seriously but can we not do the whole “he hates women so that makes him gay” thing? It’s totally fine to headcanon him as gay but the idea of misogyny defining being gay is just not it to me. Maybe it’s because I’ve had misogyny directed at me mostly by straight men and those experiences have been painful, so the implication of “teehee he’s a misogynist so that makes him gay” kinda feels invalidating and it feels kinda homophobic too.

Tldr: my boy is a HATER!!! He’s not just a menace to women he’s a menace to society and I think that’s beautiful 😌

idk if I've said it before, but your portrayals of both Rouxls and Queen are among my favorites, and the way they are when you combine the two is the sole thing that got me to say "yes" to queenkaard. When I first saw it in the game and it started catching on as a ship, I was like "nooo I hc him as gay," but then after seeing your stuff I was like "oh nvm I totally see this now."

i think hearing "i didn't see this ship before, but after your art i understand it and/or even ship it myself" is one of the nicest compliments i get, because it makes me feel like i'm representing something meaningful and sweet about a pairing and having people understand what i think is so great and captivating about them. i've gotten a couple asks like this and sometimes i forget to respond but i always really appreciate them :) thank you very much

I am forever baffled by this show but I'm too deep to quit sjdksdkdkf. Why have all of this at once? I know episode count isn't their choice, presumably, but it all needs to slow down.

What's with Samson like you mentioned? Can he get something? Ever? Please?

Like Kate came back married and Amanda excitedly hugged her?? I was baffled. When have you guys ever been close? The snippets we get just make the previous absence feel even more jarring. Why don't we get team dynamics? I loved you mentioned Justice League in the tags 'cause that's a team (also b/c I am a Batman fan first, person second)! I know how they work, their banter, personalities, they include tidbits like Superman's birthday and what Bruce and Wonder Woman might give as a gift which add to their character! There's dynamics explored, too, it's not always a whole group.

I'd argue even showing whole new!GoG out of costume to display their fashion choices is easy way to subtly imply character. Does Kate like working out since she has to depend on her skill rather than enhanced ability? Is she sporty? Does Rex like attention grabbing wear? Neon bright colors? Would he or would he not wear a crop top. I say yes. LET THEM HANG OUT. ONCE. Like, Rex feels like the most distinctive one to me because his louder personality means they have to show dynamic, even if it's irritation or exasperation.

ART IMMUNITY IS SO FUN. Like truly the only untouchable guy in the world. No one dares lay a hand on him. He's got a thousand super hero/villain/vigilantes who need his designs. I'd like to think Nolan is so blunt and strange it's got an allure to it, like now Art has to now what his deal is because he knows everybody's deal. Art knows everybody, and everybody knows him. And yeah, Art dealing with villains all the time so he's like danger-blind to unsettling vibes, love if he wasn't exactly shocked or grieving the relationship as much post Nolan Reveal, like ah yeah, some people go rogue.

Mark is a special little guy to whole GDA LMAO. He's got that undeniable nepo baby vibe istg. The facts are the facts Cecil has meetings to intend but he's procrastinating by checking on Mark instead. Imagine the GoG truly rarely see Cecil except for alerts and are baffled Mark has frequent check-ins? Especially since they dgaf about Nolan. But truly why isn't Mark seen with them? He's not in college, and Debbie is shown to be more present than Mark is for Oliver, so what's he doing then? Like, Immortal was the outlier, and Cecil's Cecil, so?????? Why doesn't he???????

ALSO YES EXACTLY. THE FAMILY HAS TO BE WEIRD. It makes no sense why they aren't. It's like they popped into existence when the first episode began, where's the historyyyyyyyy. I demand Mark be a danger-blind, paper eating, mercury snacking, nepo baby. Give him a mentor too. Also let him be Oliver's main parent so Debbie can be a person, give her one hobby. Like does she find it difficult to care when tragedies arise? Is she strangely calm if a crisis occurs around her, or outright irritated it's happening at all? The latter is so funny.

Begging for Mark platonically interacting with literally anyone, him and Rex's "that's his fav finger :/" was everything to me. I am chronically deprived of mfs interacting.

Also I saw mentioned in another post so I figure I'd just add here tbh, but utterly fascinated with how Oliver clearly needs a lesson in morality, like, not just being scolded and yelled at. Which I understand is part of Mark's flaw(s), his frustration and inability to explain the exact difference of when murder is okay, but I'm surprised Debbie and the GDA babysitter didn't make it a huge priority considering Cecil's worries. Heck, Debbie's and Mark's, too?

Honestly, love a fic where Cecil leaned into being a fatherly mentor figure to ensure Mark didn't go rogue, like not just check-in's or poking at the wound of Dad Issues to get Mark to comply. Including spontaneous lessons in morality or philosophy or how to strategize and put his power to use cleverly. Like, it's so strange we begin with a training session but don't really see it applied, and even Oliver seems stronger and faster than him, since Mark get stronger when enraged, but Oliver made the choice to fly faster and punch through a body? I know element of surprise but it just makes me tilt my head.

This is super long, but the yapper bug got me, haha.

While I'm not too familiar with the DCU- your batfam meta posts are intiguing- so in transfering some of the broader strokes from them- I think you tackling a 'Mark isn't Nolan's biological son' fic would be fascinating. Sort of a step to the side of the 'what if Mark never got his powers' fic that sometimes pop up in the fandom

OOOOOO chewing on this currently, hm, the much a distinct flavor of exactly what you’re talking about, but the potential for more family drama depending on WHO knows. Does Mark know?? Is he waiting every day only to be crushed? Does he confused non-Debbie features with Nolan’s? I suppose I’m not the most enthusiastic about non-power AUs, but I think there’s something very fun to explore about Mark having to settle with, if he knows all his life, he will never have powers? I think the trajectory of his dreams will obviously shift, I can see him still having that distinct fatherly idolization, but perhaps embraces being useful to the GDA? Cecil’s number one intern—only intern—curtesy of nepotism, ha! There is something tickling me about Mark taking the Robin Route/Role for the Teen Team in terms of having no powers, just insane skills, BUT there’s something way more delicious about intern Mark when s1e01 happens and Mark tries snooping around to find out the truth about what happened to his Dad.

I wonder if, with Mark having a whole another father, if they’re more or less distant relationship, depending on WHEN Nolan entered Mark’s life? Like if Debbie met Nolan later for this, or just for fun, they dated once, separated (Mark being born during then), then they happened to stumble into each others lives again and Mark’s already been born, anywhere from tween to teenager so there’s a gap in how close they are. I feel like one important aspect of the whole Family Drama is how close they’re supposed to be, a functional, loving family turned upside down? So I wonder what more distance does. I wonder how Nolan copes when his family is entirely human and he can’t project onto Mark.

I hate it when I headcanon a character who’s canonically a girl as a trans man and make ships of him and a character who’s canonically a guy and I refer to it as a gay/mlm/guyxguy/whatever ship and someone gets mad. Like omg let trans people have FUNNNNN. Why are queer headcanons and genderbends cool until they’re saying that the character is trans???

and like half of the characters in the franchise are women, and a total of… NONE of the characters are trans men. Also, my headcanon doesn’t change the source material. No, I don’t think that being a trans man makes you a woman or vice versa. That’s why it’s a headcanon, and the headcanon is that this character is actually a trans man and not a woman at all! You’ll never guess what pronouns most trans men had to use at some point in their lives, and you really won’t like it when you find out about pre-(or no-)transition trans men… or trans men who are in the closet… or trans men who don’t know that they’re trans yet.

People will preach about not letting canon shackle your shipping experience in fandoms until it's a ship they don't like or deem "problematic" then all of a sudden the canon relationship status matters and shipping it now means that you think it's canon. But the same rules don't apply to other non canon ships. Just say you personally don't like it and pick a lane for goodness' sake.

Okay. I feel like I have to say this because I saw this argument earlier. Zack and Sephiroth WERE friends. They were friends caught up in a strained, stressful situation beyond their control. With this said, there's some understandable tension between them during the game. But Zack is NOT cruel to Sephiroth during CC, nor is he at any point responsible for Sephiroth's trauma or actions. When Zack gets annoyed at Sephiroth during the story, there are VALID reasons for him feeling this way. And, moreover, Sephiroth is not the ONLY victim of CC compared to the OCEAN OF TRAUMA Zack experiences.

For starters, Sephiroth is technically dumping all his responsibilities onto Zack, causing him to bear the emotional burden. Sephiroth is also aloof and not always communicative. Zack was mad at him in Junon because Sephiroth was not returning his calls. Zack being pissed at Sephiroth because of Nibelheim? He just murdered a ton of civilians there's realistically no way you can be nice and gentle with someone after that. Zack not checking in on Sephiroth? Well he actually MIGHT have been. How else does he know what Sephiroth is doing in there? How does Cloud have memories of Sephiroth telling him to go away? Zack likely DID express concern for Sephiroth's wellbeing and WAS rebuffed. Zack even expresses concern at the Nibelheim reactor by trying to physically comfort Sephiroth, only for SEPHIROTH to push him away. Zack was also the one telling Genesis to shut the hell up because he could see that Sephiroth was getting upset. Zack DOES care and DOES emphasize with Sephiroth. The game just isn't dwelling on it.

Sephiroth is not the only person in pain during CC. I think Zack had to deal with the MOST shit since he's the one who had to kill Angeal. He got to watch Genesis seemingly die in front of him. I think Zack has MORE THAN A FEW valid reasons for being occasionally upset and angry at Sephiroth. But even AFTER what Sephiroth did in Nibelheim, Zack still chooses to honor him at the end. Sephiroth is shown in Zack's memories of people he loves during his last stand. AND Zack stands in Sephiroth's place when he fulfills Genesis' wish to share the apples. In Opera Omnia, Zack is very clearly upset with what happened with Sephiroth, and doesn't seem to be able to truly hate him. And Sephiroth killed innocent people and tried to destroy the world. I think if Zack can still pity Sephiroth afterwards, it wasn't just an unempathetic relationship.

Also, and this is something that the game tries to convey but doesn't do a good enough job, Sephiroth and Zack spend pretty much 2 years in each other's company. The DMW cutscenes explore this idea as it shows them training together. What you are seeing are only a handful of moments in what is otherwise a period of them actually befriending each other and forming enough of a bond for Sephiroth to have grown some level of fondness for him. Nomura himself has said that Sephiroth really trusts Zack, and appreciates that Zack treats him like a human being and not a hero. He LIKES that Zack calls him out, likes that Zack challenges him. He is THANKFUL for that.

Crisis Core is a flawed game. But Sephiroth is not the only victim or the only one suffering throughout. Genesis and Angeal suffered. And god, Zack MORE than suffered. And no one was nice to HIM throughout. No one cares about HIS mental health. No one gives HIM special treatment. He has to kill his friends and deal with it. And then he dies. I love Sephiroth, you all know that. But part of loving the character is accepting the very real truth that he is STILL a villain and that he is NOT the center of suffering. His pain does NOT invalidate the pain of others.

Anyway, Zack and Sephiroth were still friends despite all this. They weren't as close as they could have been, but they were. It was a relationship with occasional bitterness, drama, and heartache, but they were still good enough friends for it to count. But we need to take into account that Zack is NOT to blame for anything related to Sephiroth's pain and actions. If anything, he is completely blameless.

just saw another one of those "stop shipping aroace characters and saying aroace people can date" posts and im literally going bonkers..

please.. the COMMENTS on these posts are SOOO CRAZY.. "you wouldnt ship a lesbian with a man, would you?" ohhh i see. so you didnt get the point at all is what im hearing.

AROMANTIC MEANS "LITTLE TO NO ROMANTIC ATTRACTION." romance repulsed aro people definitely deserve more representation and it sucks that there isnt much at all, BUT that doesnt mean you should just erase the rest of the community in its entirety ? yall know aro is a spectrum, right? why are you being dense?

anyway yeah, my biggest problem with this discourse isnt really the people making their own posts, its when i or another aro person makes our own content of aroace people in romantic relationships or simply EXIST as aroace people in romantic relationships, and people think its okay to tell us that we aren't portraying aroace people correctly.. as if we arent writing our own experience? please just leave us alone im literally begging you. at least do some research on others in the community, why do you only think about yourself and whatever youve seen on tiktok?
