Superman: What are you talking about?

Phantom: Don’t play dumb. In the land of the dead, people like to talk about the past, you know. You told Jonathan he wasn’t your father, and then you didn’t even try to save him. It’s cruel. But you can be happy, Jonathan doesn’t blame you for his death. I do.

Superman: I.. I listened to what he said. He was trying to protect me.

Danny: So, how does it feel? Letting him die in front of you, knowing you could have saved him? Do you blame youself?

Superman: How dare you.

Danny: Of course, you do. Because no matter how many lives Superman saves, the most important one to you..You’ll never got it back. Afraid of being a lab rat? Superman is not special. I am not special too. 

Danny: Don’t look down at me just because you have more experience behind you. Revealing my identity should be my choice, not yours.

Curious add-ons: additions and deletions, Episode 11 (Part 7)

A bit of a warning: photo-heavy post

Eleven episodes in, and it is safe to say that I love these versions of Ron and Toto. Don’t get me wrong Akira Amano hasn’t done anything wrong, it is just these RonToto are kinder and more codependent from each other that I am 110 per cent sure they’d compete with that kind of codependency from the manga RonToto, and anime RonToto would win.

They diminished Toto’s comedic childlike expressions on this episode removing the giggle on Toto’s part, for example, when he asked Ron if the latter had a friend. Junya Enoki, for his part, admitted that because Toto is a grown man and a police officer, he doesn’t need to act cute all the time. The reason this scene is much more tender than in the manga. The “what’s so funny?” question from Ron was omitted and instead the anime writers made Toto stammer with his “N-not even… one?” After hearing Ron’s answer that he considers Toto to be his friend, he replies with a much more humbled “I am glad to hear it” and not “Gee, thanks.” And then the blush on Toto’s face as if he is darn proud and happy because after all they have been through, Ron treats him more special than the others, that is being allowed to be closer to him by becoming his friend.

Truth be told, these instances of blushing from the main characters would turn me into mush.

Another passage omitted from the manga and the new dialogue has become a Sherlock BBC reference in the anime.

Kawasemi san: “If you want to hide a tree, hide it in a forest.” (Episode 11)

SH from Sherlock BBC: “If you wanted to hide a tree then the best place to do it is a forest, wouldn’t you say? People would just walk past it, not knowing - not able to decipher the message.” (Episode 2, Season 1, The Blind Banker)

Surely, one of these days I’d write a list of all these Sherlock BBC references: from the manga to anime, because they are so many. Of course, it could have been the translator’s choice in the end.

Continuity problems in the manga are explained in the anime.

a) the reason Ron eats dangos 🍡 on the train;

b) Constable Kimyou, whose surname doesn’t mean “strange”

c) Ron accompanying Toto was not a chance where he got an email from the neurology institute, but it was a planned or let’s just say a convenient way to ride with Toto on the train at the same time going to Aichi with a purpose.

The anime crew adding this scene. Toto’s joyful reaction upon seeing his friend again after witnessing Kawasemi’s slump in person. Probably Toto was relieved and had missed his friend so much after their abrupt and odd parting at the Nagoya train station, in which he had so many questions that were partly answered at the end of the episode.

Can you see the puppets and the No. 96 (Ron’s scar which has become part of him) from the shop? Not only they increased the price from ¥900 (in 2021) to ¥960 (2023) but Ron’s puppets Kamo-kyun (platypus) and Eli Pyon (frill-necked lizard) are on sale.

This ending that fuels a few questions. Ron was sort of refusing to look at Toto as he explained his meeting with Dr. Mofu and her subsequent referrals to the other medical professionals concerning his pathological condition to pressure the criminals to suicide. Instead he looked at his reflection on the glass train window, Toto’s delightful enthusiastic voice had become white noise. This Ron is more pessimistic and not so much looking forward to the therapy and its possible outcome. I wonder if the anime writers (Jackson Ou wrote the episode with a storyboard from Shingo Tamaki who were also responsible to previous Kawasemi episode) would deviate a bit from the manga.

Two more episodes and I don’t want it to end. There are so many materials available and it seems we haven’t scratched the surface yet. The tension is getting bigger. It would be nicer if they are given the second cour and end the first season with the Plateau Aubege arc. A perfect ending to establish a canon RonToto.

Summary:

“Ahaha… Phew. Oh, it’s finally happened. You’ve got your first schoolboy crush, you big baby.”

“I don’t have a crush. There is no crushing here. I’m not nervous, and I didn’t do any of that! As often as you’re saying.”

Tony lunges for his phone and punches in a number he’s long since known by heart. Thankfully, and likely motivated by some sort of conditioning, Rhodey picks up near instantly. ��Rhodey. Rhodey, something’s wrong with me.”

“Tones, what’s going on?” Rhodey asks, all cautious alertness. 

“My heartrate’s skyrocketing, I’m sweating and I can’t focus on anything - not even my projects. Rhodey, what good am I if I can’t get into the zone? All I am is my mind Rhodey. I NEED my mind.” Tony paces and runs a hand through his hair. “Something’s seriously wrong if I can’t make shit.”

A pause. “FRIDAY, is Tony dying again?” 

Offended, Tony says, “I’m right here.” 

“Yeah, and you never tell us anything if it has to do with your health. Thus, the big baby monitor protocol.” 

“It’s called the Tony Monitor.”

“That’s what I said.”

Tony scowls, but is cut off from arguing further by FRIDAY saying, “Boss, while exhibiting symptoms of an anxiety attack, is not currently experiencing an attack. After cursory research, it seems to be nervousness.”

Rhodey groans and Tony can practically hear the eyeroll. “Tony, you’re killing me. What are you even nervous about?” 

“I’m not nervous.” Tony denies. “I don’t get nervous. I’ve had nerves of iron my entire life.” 

Rhodey hums in thought. “You know, you might have a point there. I’ve seen you get defensive from trust issues, but I don’t think you’ve ever been nervous-nervous.”

“See!” Tony exclaims, vindicated. 

“FRIDAY, what’s making Tony spazz out?” Rhodey mercilessly kicks Tony back down to Earth. Tony makes a sound of indignation, but FRIDAY, the traitor, proceeds to answer Rhodey’s question. 

“Dr. Strange is due to come by for a meeting regarding maintaining relations between Kamar Taj and the Avengers going forwards.” And then, because he doesn’t get to keep anything to himself apparently, Friday says, “Boss has checked the schedule three times and has shifted things in his workshop twice. He periodically stops working to clean up after himself and has changed five times.” 

Tony doesn’t get to do more than squawk in protest before Rhodey's raucous laughter pours over the phone. Insultingly, it goes on for several minutes. A couple of times, Rhodey pauses as if to say something, only to burst into suppressed giggles that Tony could still hear. 

Tony’s scowl grows deeper. 

“Ahaha… Phew. Oh, it’s finally happened. You’ve got your first schoolboy crush, you big baby.” 

“I don’t have a crush. There is no crushing here. I’m not nervous, and I didn’t do any of that! As often as you’re saying.” 

“Sorry boss.” FRIDAY apologizes, without a speck of actual regret in her tone. “You did, in fact, do all of that.” 

Tony scoffs. He changes the subject. “And what’s with you, Platypus? Even if I did have a crush on Strange, which I don’t, you���ve never approved of anyone I took interest in before.” 

The unimpressed silence stretches for just a fraction of a bit too long. Tony winces. “Because the only people you’ve ever had around were gold-diggers or mindless parrots.” Rhodey says flatly. “Strange is just you, but more on the opposite scale of things. You two balance each other out.” 

Tony only gets to feel touched for an instant. “Besides,” Rhodey continues, “Stephen might be an asshole, but underneath that shell of his, he’s all gooey insides. He’s a pretty fun guy.” 

Tony blinks. He tries to clean out his ears. “I think I have tinnitus. What did you just say?” 

Rhodey laughs mockingly. “We’ve talked every once in a while. He wanted to give me some options I didn’t have before. Did you know the wizards can use magic to move paralyzed limbs?”

A lump instantly forms in his throat. No, Tony didn’t know that. His mind races with the implications. 

“I said no. And don’t you try and talk me out of it.” Rhodey chides without missing a beat. Tony closes his mouth. “What happened, happened. I’ve made my peace with it. Sure, it would be nice to stand on my own two feet, but magic’s not for me.” And both of them know, no matter how much he trusts the ones who wield magic, Tony will never be fully comfortable with it being used around him. 

“You’ll figure something out, Tones. I’ll just wait until you can science me up a solution instead.” 

Tony takes a minute to process that. He clears his throat. “Well. Of course I will.” 

He searches for a way to divert the conversation away from feelings, only to feel like he’s been hit by a clue-by-four. “Wait. What do you mean you’ve been meeting with Strange? And did you call him Stephen?” 

Rhodey chuckles. “We meet once a month to chat. He translates some of the nonsense from my doctor’s appointments. He’s a damn good doctor, too. Remember that crick in my hip? Three different docs could only tell me something was wrong, but Stephen managed to sort me out after I told him about it. It wasn’t my spine, it was my skin - I’m mildly allergic to the muscle relaxant. It’s why the symptoms were only showing recently. Some exposure is fine, but overtime, the effects added up.”

Tony’s face does something. He’s not sure what he’s more conflicted about. That Strange went over his head to talk to Rhodey about using magic or that Rhodey’s apparently been meeting Strange for months - enough to call him Stephen (seriously Tony can’t get over that) - when the asshole knows that Tony’s been trying to get Strange on the team for just as long. 

(Unsuccessfully, but Tony prefers to think of it as a work in progress.)

“And don’t think you’re going to distract me.” Rhodey pauses and if he didn’t have a smirk the size of the Sicilian, Tony would eat his suit. “This isn’t about me and Stephen, this is about Stephen and you.” 

“What, our working relationship as heroes?” Tony tries to deflect. 

“Aha- nice try. It kills me that I can’t be there to watch you fall over yourself right now, but I’ll have to settle for prying your mouth open for the details. When are you going to ask him out?” 

Tony twitches and argues, “I’m not going to ask him out, because I don’t like him. He’s an asshole wizard who refuses to do the smart thing and become an Avenger.” 

Rhodey scoffs. “Pull the other one, it’s got bells on. You haven’t been this much of a mess since that time in Philly where-” 

“Alright, fuck- I thought we agreed to never speak of that again.” Tony cuts him off hastily. 

“You agreed. I hold veto rights.” 

He does, which Tony likes to pretend to forget about. He tongues his teeth in thought. “I dunno Rhodey, I still feel like this is all about something else.” 

Rhodey says something, but it’s covered up by interference. After a moment, his voice comes through loud and clear. “Alright Tones, I’ll let you believe that. But when you get your head out of the ground and take a hint, don’t try and push him away. Stephen likes you a lot or he wouldn’t have stood for having you hound his every step. Just man up and ask the guy out.”

There’s a lot for Tony to unpack in that (Stephen likes him?), but he doesn’t get the chance to think it over. More noise can be heard over the call. “Listen, I’ve got to go- keep me updated alright?”

There’s a tone to his voice that brooks no argument, and Tony knows he’s talking more than just about whatever crush Rhodey thinks Tony has. The soft warm feeling in his chest is more familiar than the way his guts nearly overturned just a few minutes back. “Yeah, yeah. Go do whatever it is you’re needed for.” 

The call ends and Tony’s left feeling better than he had before he talked to Rhodey. His Platypus really does know him best. Even if he HAS to be wrong about Tony liking Strange.  

Just to prove it, Tony pictures the wizard. His lithe, graceful movements. The way he somehow makes robes from ancient history look like some sort of fashion statement. His smug smirk, cheekbones sharp enough to cut diamond, and the ever changing color of his eyes. 

Tony flushes. Fuck. Maybe Rhodey has a point after all. He laughs uneasily, but Rhodey’s words come back to mind. 

Stephen likes him? Well, if Rhodey’s right about Tony, Tony won’t bet on Rhodey being wrong about Stephen, too. Plans start building up in his head. He’s going to charm the pants off the wizard- and hopefully a lot more too. 

Still late posting this, but not as late as last time. Maybe I'll actually post on time at some point!

Agent H (HOBaRT the Funny Mixer Theme)

Hey! This post is effectively a continuation of yesterday's post on Theme of HoBART. Unless you're already decently well versed in SiIvaGunner lore, particularly surrounding Season 4, I highly recommend reading it first to get perspective of what I'll be discussing here.

Sooooo, HoBART wound up losing in the King for Another Day tournament. Like, effectively dead last, by a mile - he got the least amount of votes in the entire tournament. Yet he grew a sort of cult fanbase from this disasterous tournament run, paired with how lovable he was being presented in the small side stories being released during the tournament. It gradually became clear that the joke with HoBART was just how there's not really anything funny about a mixer, thus creating comedy out of just how absurdly void of comedy it is. Funny enough, its a similar kind of meta-humor that's become associated with Grand Dad on the channel nowadays, with "the funny 7" becoming a sort of symbol for how the Grand Dad meme is long past its prime. HoBART as a character has come to be a strange little peek into the meta aspects of SiIvaGunner, instilled into an australian mixer.

A couple months later, we arrive at the Season 4 Episode 2 summer celebrations. Though they first appeared to be solely dedicated to honoring the victor of the prior years tournament, it was in truth a wide-spread celebration of all sorts of things, not even limited to just tournament contestants. One of the most unexpected parts of this was the sudden Phineas & Ferb takeover, which became far more popular than the team had initially anticipated. Simply put, both rippers and audience alike were in LOVE with Phineas & Ferb music, and the event became so big as to extend to a SECOND event, dubbed the Doofenshmirtz Takeover after the series' villain.

So you take this absolutely adored cartoon which has effectively been part of an entire generation's childhood due to their Disney Channel dominance, and mix it with HoBART - a character that's kind of paradoxically loved for how unloved he is, deemed funny for how unfunny he is. The result is Agent H (HOBaRT the Funny Mixer Theme) - a theme that proudly and unabashedly honors and boasts about how great, funny and cool HoBART is, as a genuine celebration of his continued relevance on the channel.

As you may have figured, its a cover of Perry the Platypus' theme redone to instead be about HoBART, with a couple of extra flourishes added to the mix here and there. The main draw here is Chase Beck, voice of DJ Professor K during the season, who does an immensely charming job as the vocalist here (possibly also inferring that this theme was one sung by the tournament winner himself?). The lyrics don't abandon HoBART's strangely paradoxical nature, yet even moreso than his theme back during the tournament, present these paradoxes as deeply desirable. He IS a funny little mixer, and he IS funnier than the Number 7!

Everyone who worked on this rip did a tremendous job capturing the essence of every piece involved, althewhile producing an extremely funny addition to one of SiIva's most heartfelt takeovers.

14 December 2023 - I had breakfast at the hostel. I slept in again and lazied about the hostel. Dave and Christy picked me up from the hostel at noon, and we drove north to a bowling pitch where wallabees are often sighted. We knew our chances weren't good because of the recent cyclone and the current rain, but we decided to give it a try anyway. When we got there, we were surprised to find a whole bunch of wallabees, jumping around the bowling pitch! Even though it was rainy, they were still hanging out. Right before we left, a group of wallabee went full on sprinting across the field, hopping through the deep puddles and splashing water as they did. It looked to me like they were intentionally puddle jumping and splashing, just like little (human) kids in a rainstorm! We drove back to Cairns and grabbed lunch. After lunch, we decided to go on a walk. We walked to the beach and walked along the beach, then we walked 6.2km from our lunch place to the esplanade, north to Cairns Fun Ship Playground, then along Lily Creek Circuit back to the lunch spot. During our walk, Dave saw a platypus in the creek!!! I'm so jealous that I missed it! By the time I looked, it was gone. We saw multiple dozens of bats hanging from the fruit trees along our walk! We even saw some of them flying, and since it was during the day, we could see the silhouettes of their wing bones through their wings! It looked really cool!

After our walk, we went to my hostel and played the boardgame Ticket to Ride. A few other people at my hostel joined in for the second game.

Dave and Christy decided to head out for dinner, and I decided to stick around and play more board games with my friends at the hostel. We played Ticket to Ride some more, and then we played Jenga, and then we played Fishbowl. I found out that people across the world play Fishbowl, but they all call it different names. In France, there's a French name for it, in Germany they call it Activity, in Brazil they have a Brazilian name for it, and in Spain, they call it "Alto el Fuego," which means stop the fire. It's exactly the same game, played by people of different nationalities all over the world! And we played it tonight! Tonight, we played with Moonay from Japan, Art from Japan, Jaggy from Austria, Rainbow from Taiwan, Vincent from Taiwan, Flavio from Brazil, Mar from Brazil, Gemma (pronounced "Hemma") from Spain, Lily from China, Sakura from Japan, and me from the USA. We played until midnight, at which point we got kicked out of the common space because it's quiet hours. Most everyone is wanting to play again tomorrow!

I'm grateful for Dave and Christy, who didn't even ask me if I wanted to come with them; they just said, "we're picking you up." I'm grateful for the new friends I'm making at the hostel. I'm grateful for the fun times. I was feeling some social anxiety the first few nights at the hostel. I felt like I was an outsider. Now, I feel like I'm part of the crew. Zak Fisher, a friend and roommate in Zion, says, "Life happens when you leave your room." I like this saying more and more. It's so true. One could be content to live one's life in the comfort and safety of one's room. But the interesting, new, exciting, novel things happen when one leaves the safety and comfort of one's room and experiences the most unlikely and unexpected things that the universe devises.

Monday 20th February 2023

Emerging from our cabin this morning with the first coffee of the day we were met by 3 kangaroos on the lawn who of course were delighted to see us but nonetheless scarpered pretty quick.

With the Nissan packed we set off for Woodenbong, a journey of just 190kms so we felt we could take it easy to reach our destination. The route North took us firstly up the A1 but then turned away from the coast towards the Hinterland where we would meet few towns along the way. The starting point put us in sugar milling as the main contributor to the economy, this gradually changing to beef production. Lunch was purchased at the tiny town of Coraki; a ghost of a town now its port on the Richmond River is closed. We were pleased to find on its closed down high street a long established bakery with absolutely excellent fully packed steak and kidney pies! It was then a short hop to Casino, a much larger town and now proudly a beef producing centre. This is a town recently devastated by the terrible flooding of the Richmond River a year ago. Vast areas were changed beyond recognition leaving many homeless and faced with government buyout of their plots with the plan to move people to higher land. One major victim was the platypus whose habitat was completely destroyed and have now gone missing. Casino was a nicer place than expected. The lady in the brand new tourist information centre sent us on our way with a heritage trail map to seek out the best parts of their fair town. So after a free provided cup of coffee and biscuit we mobilised our map reading skills to discover the delights of the place. It was a pleasant surprise to find good examples of art deco buildings along with a few Victorians. One not so welcome find was a line of trees by the river that were filled with 100s of rather lively fruit bats that not only chirupped a lot but to Martine's consternation, practiced their flying skills quite a lot.

We filled the Nissan with E10 at a staggering £1.10 a litre and set off on the final section of our journey to Woodenbong.

Our digs for the next 2 nights are absolutely delightful. Once again it's a cabin of sorts although its origins are agricultural. It has a verandah at the back which looks out across stunning uninterrupted countryside to the mountain range beyond. Cows grazing and distant kangaroos contribute to the beauty of this place and we feel extremely fortunate that we have found this special accommodation. It is so peaceful here.

Tomorrow we shall walk into the very small township of Woodenbong, pop. 500, to see what this metropolis has to offer.

ps. Disaster. SB bought two days ago turned out to be Chardonnay!!!! Yuck.
