Insane pet peeve I have that drives me nuts is when people are like “Yeah Marcy was confirmed to be Autistic by Matt Braly :3” when like. no. no she wasn’t. I’m not saying I don’t think Marcy is autistic. She’s the most autistic character to ever exist. She’s so autism. Her marshmallow charm might as well be TBH. But that’s NOT what Matt said.

Matt has repeatedly answered the “is Marcy autistic?” question with some variant of “She wasn’t intended to be written that way, but I’m glad people see themselves in her :)”

The defining event people usually are referring to when they say it was confirmed word of god is a fan of Amphibia had some psychologist (psychiatrist? The qualified position) watch clips of Marcy and diagnose her and they agreed she could be diagnosed with Autism according to the DSM-5. This information was presented to Matt during an interview and he again emphasized she wasn’t written that way intentionally, and since he isn’t on the spectrum he doesn’t feel qualified to say for sure whether Marcy is or isn’t autistic. He then said it was “up to you” (you being the fans) whether she was or wasn’t. Basically saying that if you see her as autistic, then she’s autistic! But he’s not going to make it an official statement about the show or the character because he doesn’t feel qualified. He later confirmed that was indeed the intent of his statement once people started to say he confirmed it.

It’s just so hard to argue this when like. Marcy is in fact so autistic. I believe she’s autistic. She goes YIPPEEE!

But I also feel like. So much warmth when I think about how Matt created her. He set out to design a quirky nerdy friend, who struggles socially and makes mistakes but is adorable and lovable and endearing. And on complete accident, just creating a “normal” character, he created a picture perfect diagnosable example of a young autistic girl. And like. I dunno that makes me feel good. Knowing the person who created my favorite show created someone like me, not because he set out to use that as a base, but because he found that kind of person an enjoyable and realistic character he wanted to include in his show.

Ignoring the real possibility he intentionally let himself be caught from the little we know so far Luigi Mangione's case is a fascinating combination of astonishing brilliance and confusing stupidity. This young man plans and executes his assassination and escape with such a meticulous care and calmness that it's suspected that he's a professional hitman. He comes up with Riddler-sque moves like writing his manifesto poetically on the bullets and leaving his backpack behind full of Monopoly money. He carefully wears a mask to avoid being identified but removes it because a woman who was checking him into the hostel was flirting with him and wanted to see his smile. He still manages to escape the most surveilled city in the country in the midst of ongoing national manhunt only to get caught in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Pennsylvania while eating at the McDonalds. Because for some reason he had the same clothes and mask as in New York and was carrying the same gun and suppressor. And when the cops detained him he showed them the same fake id he used in New York. And oh yeah he's a frat bro gym rat who has a masters degree in computer science from Penn but reads stupid self-help books about being on the grind and is 'anti-woke' while being bisexual suffering from anxiety and wanting to end oppressive capitalism. Not even god himself could invent a person like this

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.

it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.
