after literal years i finally got around to downloading a pdf of the wipers times, an unsancitioned satitical british trench magazine circulated among the troops in france from 1916-1918 after the fortuitous discovery of a printing press. i have approximately five million other things i need to read so idk when i'll be able to devote much time to it, and i gotta pick up a proper copy bc it's missing at least salient no 4 vol 2. that said? i'm genuinely laughing at what i've skimmed so far

#this is like THE page everyone likes it seems but it's SO good #also the flammenwerfer one i found on wikipedia is gold. that's the only reason i know no 4 vol 2 is missing from the pdf after skimming #and 'DEAD COW FARM' CINEMA. is great #the wipers times is SO fascinating to me as a glimpse of life into the trenches without any signifigant censorship of the bitterness that's #couched in satire. it's hilarious satire but there's still bitterness there sometimes! and gallows humor! this was adored by the men on the #front but it's amazing it happened at all. SO glad it did. it's a marvel #len speaks #ww1 #world war 1 #world war one #the great war #1917 #<- figured you guys might find this interesting considering it would be circulating during canon #history

Sobbing uncontrollably reading through a dissertation about the college experience of students with ADHD. It is like reading a report about my life that just says over and over "My experiences are real. My hardships are real. I am not lazy, I am not dumb. My struggles were not my fault, and they were not a moral failing. The failure was with the system, not with me."

Here's a line that got me in particular:

"Hotez et al.(2022) compared the health, academic, and non-academic capacities of a nationally representative sample of U.S. first-year college students with ADHD and without ADHD. Students with ADHD self-reported lower academic aspirations and more feelings of depression and overwhelm, ranking themselves lower in their general emotional health. The fact that students with ADHD scored in the highest 10th percentile for many non-academic traits, such as artistic ability, computer skills, creativity, public speaking, social confidence, self-understanding and understanding of others, compassion, and risk-tasking, suggests that this population has strengths that are frequently underappreciated in academia."

(the paper is a thesis called "Understanding the Collegiate Experience for Students With ADHD" by Gia Long, 2022)

I love Scum Villain fics. There's so much variety and so many different kinds of hijinks! For instance, if I want to read a fic about Shen Yuan transmigrating as a many-armed eldritch creature who puppets Shen Qingqiu's body and that only Binghe can see and hear, that fic exists!

What's your feelings on landback?

It's complicated! Especially since "landback" is used as an extremely vague catch-all term for a wide variety of action.

Some people define it as defending and expanding sovereignty over the land already controlled by indigenous tribes, forcing the US government to uphold its treaties, generally supporting and protecting indigenous cultures, and fighting for environmental protections and better stewardship of the earth, all of which I fully support.

Some people define it as "returning sovereignty of ancestral lands to the tribes who used to inhabit them" and tbqh I don't know how that's supposed to work. Kind of seems like any steps taken to ensure that native people retain control over the land/government would necessitate disenfranchising 98% of the country, and that seems pretty bad to me! And no, I don't think disenfranchising almost your entire population is an ethical or effective way to make reparations for past atrocities.

Most of the info I can find on the subject is very much style over substance and doesn't contain any actual plan of action, so it's hard to find concrete info on what the second group is actually proposing.

#i'm open to discussion but do NOT send me 'educational' pdfs about landback. i have read them. most of them are extremely bad #i already understand the ideology. i do not need fifteen pages of redundant social justice language to explain it to me #look at me. look me in the eyes. unless it is advocating a direct; clear; and ACTIONABLE plan it is not of any use to me
