my august fanart for fanfic is from
Surgeonfish by Myrddinembreis
this whole fic is law at his best (so, his worst), and i was just floored by this scene that the author describes as "law escapes the oubliette with the power of love and radiation."
(as per usual, please remember to leave comments and kudos for the author!)

Hello! I love your art so much, keep up the good work and question, what's your favorite one piece character and when did you start shipping luffy and law? (My favorite ship too)
yay!!! thank you! 🥰
oh man. my fave one piece character is luffy but i dont count that SO. my non-luffy fave is robin!
i loved her look as miss all sunday, but also water 7 was when i really fell in love with one piece. i sobbed like a baby over her wanting to live too (did NOT help that the merry went soon after).
asking me questions about timelines never goes well bc i have the long term memory of a housefly, but i was a luzo from day one, and then i fell hard for zosan too. id say that became my main ship for a while.
but my friend who got me into one piece wanted me to get to dressrosa so id understand. so she whispered her evil thoughts into my ear… and idk. all of a sudden one day it just. Hit Me.
and now here i am. even though she wont feed ME with any lulaw content 😒

you've probably answered this before, but what's your process when you create your comics and how do you panel them? you make your comics very readable and the story flows really well!! i guess you can say im intrigued by it. i love your comics and hope to make some cool comics too! :]
(sorry for the delay i keep forgetting to check my asks and i no longer seem to get notifs for them!)
i HAVE actually answered something similar (my personal comic-making workflow and tips!) but i didnt say much about determining panelling.
i honestly am not sure what else to advise beyond 1) read more comics and varieties (graphic novels, manga, indie, fancomics, webtoons, newspaper strips, etc) and 2) practice and keep making your own
but if you are just curious for my perspective on things, i can kinda walk you through some of my thought processes!
quip’s guide to panels!
(As per usual, I’ll type better for readability.)
1) Size
When I’m making my notes about what each panel will be, this kinda helps me gauge the approximate size. For example, if I say I want a close-up of a hand on a doorknob, I know I have some flexibility.
But if my notes say something like “fullbody shot that highlights how much dirt is on the person,” I know that will need some space. I need to make the person big enough to show details like dirt. If they’re tall, I’ll have to account for that.
Also, for highlight/emphasis panels, you want to have more real estate. Here’s a page for an example.
Tumblr media
I wanted that pretty Luffy shot for effect (symbolically like he’s taking over most of Law’s view), so even though I could have fit it in a smaller square, I decided in advance to give it a large chunk of real estate.
If you imagine your comic like it’s in motion, you can slow time down with a few big panels, and you can speed time up with many small panels! This is why hanging moments (dawning realizations or multiple people reacting to the same thing) work well with the former and action shots work well with the latter!
You also want diversity, so sometimes panel size is dictated by how much space you have left or what other panels nearby look like.
(I know. It’s so many things to think about at once. But they aren’t all mandatory AND they start to come intuitively after a while!)
2) Shape
In general, I tend toward basic quadrilaterals, but there are exceptions. I like angular and crooked panels for when a character is nervous/disturbed/embarrassed or for moments of action.
You can play with the line thickness or make them jagged or not even use straight lines.
In this example, I made the panels into circles to mimic a spyglass.
Tumblr media
Sometimes you can just not use a panel at all and just draw in the area behind/around the others.
3) Position
This is one of those “you have to do it to figure it out” things.
The best suggestion is to pre-plan. As much as that seems like extra work, it can save you from a lot of puzzling later.
Thumbnailing can help ensure you have space for everything you’re trying to fit in, especially how it might flow to the next page(s) and scoot things around.
I’ll try a bunch of different layouts sometimes, until I find one that seems interesting, fits nicely, and looks appealing.
4) Extra Stuff
There are so many cool things you can try, like full page spreads (twice as wide as your normal page size) or maybe only doing comics in a square grid of panels.
Everything can be done for one of two reasons. I’ll use overlapping panels as my example here.
Tumblr media
Reason 1: Storytelling
I’m showing that these panels are a progression. They’re happening in sequence; they’re connected.
You could also use overlapping panels to show an aside, an interruption, or things happening concurrently—for instance.
Reason 2: They Just Look Cool
This is also a valid reason.
So, in summary, making comics is just the fun art of balancing a million different things all at once, but you do not have to do these things to make comics. You don’t even have to do them to make GOOD comics.
The fundamentals of what make a good comic are having a story you want to tell and being able to communicate it. And this takes practice to find what works and what your style/preferences are.
Thank you for asking!!!! And as always, mandatory disclaimer that this is my take on things and I’m self-taught. So if you don’t want to follow this advice or if it’s even somehow “wrong,” please don’t hold it against me lol

Flight of the Flame Emperor
Sabo/Koby | Teen | 9,361 words
Tags: No Archive Warnings Apply, Canonverse, The Reverie, Alternative Escape from Pangea Castle, Spoilers through Chapter 1086 & Episode 1119 Enemies to Lovers, First Impressions, Pre-Relationship, Blood and Injury.
Koby hops back half a step, arms falling to his sides. “I don’t want to fight you!” he shouts, close enough now that Sabo can hear each word clearly. Sabo grins. There’s blood in his mouth—he can taste it on his teeth. “That’s too bad, Specs,” he says. “Cuz you’re not taking me alive.”
