#pay attention to the tags on the fanfic

So, uh, I finally wrote the first chapter of the fanfic "What if Pennywise was a real serial killer and the Losers killed him and had to deal with the trauma".

The story is called "The Inane Banality of Killing a Clown" and the first chapter has just been released.

Watched an online presentation today about recent book trends, both in retail sales and library borrowing. Romance gets a big section of course, being (I think) THE most popular genre, with several heavy-hitting subcategories including romantasy and supernatural and historical and contemporary and on and on.

I wasn't surprised to hear the presenters bring up the uptick in sports romance as a subcategory, particularly hockey, because yeah, I've seen that. Unavoidable lately if you have... uhhh... entered bookstores + logged onto library websites + actually follow NHL hockey on any social media platform. Still unsurprising, even if you have done none of those other things, if you have any passing awareness of the behemoth that is Sports Real Person Fiction in general and Men's Hockey RPF in particular on AO3. (As of me going to check just now: nearly 200,000 fics and nearly 40,000 fics respectively. Damn. HRPF is nearly 25% of the parent tag there. People are having fun over there.)

I WAS taken aback, however, when the presenter brought up a few titles to watch in the coming year, in regards a potential rising type of sports romance: motorracing sports romances. Now, this is not actually SURPRISING if you have any passing awareness (which I again did) of the other behemoth that is Formula 1 RPF on AO3 (nearly 49,000 fics on AO3, more than HRPF), but I simply hadn't actually thought about the industry potential before now. It did make me think to myself, "How many book industry analyst people are taking cues from AO3 now? I mean, it seems very reasonable to pay fanfic some attention for a bunch of different reasons (it does indicate a potential ready market, I presume there are simply plenty of fanfic pleasure readers in the publishing industry, etc.), but wow... time flies and culture changes. I mean, people are publishing original omegaverse stories, for example, and have been for a while now. Wild."

And also: "Huh. Can we play the game of predicting future popular book genres, specifically niche romance subcategories, 5-10 years from now based on what's popular on AO3 right now?" Now, I don't actually keep up enough with broader fandom trends to do this well or accurately, but it's still fun to look at various fandom trends and imagine their future professional publishing counterparts that I will simply Not Understand because it's Not My Thing. If they actually figure out how to file the serial numbers off of Minecraft Gamer RPF or something someday and it becomes the next big thing, no one tell me, because I want to get blindsided, just absolutely bodied by bafflement, when I walk into a bookstore. It'll be fun.

It’s then he sees a man across the club looking at both of them, his hips unconsciously swiveling and his teeth treating his own bottom lip like last night’s dinner as he watches on. 

His features are indistinguishable, but it doesn’t matter because TK will forget him within an hour. TK feels his cock stir, and Carlos must feel it too.

“Baby?” Carlos questions, hands carding through TK’s hair slowly, growing slicked with sweat. TK continues to look past him, moving his hips in time with Carlos’ hands.

“He’s watching,” TK whispers, as if he has to keep it secret. Carlos bites onto his earlobe and he lets out a moan. The man across the club hasn’t looked away once, and TK ignores the part of him that tells him he only knows that because he hasn’t looked away either.

“Do you want him to,” Carlos whispers back, nibbling on the ear he just ushered the words into.

TK goes quiet, the thought trickling through the crevices of his mind like a penny through a crack. He had one boyfriend, older, that liked to share, and TK found something about it intoxicating. Command over not just one man, but men. All he had to do was languidly blink and they’d fall to their knees.

“What if I said yes,” TK dares, taunts, and he holds back a devious laugh as the grip around his waist tightens.

I lied. Put your clothes back on. I wanna discuss dying and/or dead platonic relationships in the hanahaki au. I'm just really fascinated by the implications of this trope.

Has anyone considered what to do with children who don't feel loved ? With parents who are queerphobic or colorist or misogynistic? What does society do with a daughter whose vision goes dark because she knows her father hates gay people? A son who is suffocating on hydrangea petals because his mother keeps giving him bleaching creams as birthday presents? A non-binary kid who coughs up blood because their favorite brother is a red pill podcaster with millions of followers?

That barbed dread in the pit of their stomach when they look at their admired loved ones and realize, "if they knew i was different, they'd hurt me".

When there's demonstrable proof that you won't be safe or worthy unless you've physically/mentally mutilated yourself to your family's standards, how can you not just die inside? Does it not pain you to be so imperfect?

And the fact that these families mean well! That father doesn't want his daughter to go to hell! That mother doesn't want her son to be punished for his dark skin by this white supremacist society! That favorite brother truly believes adhering to strict gender roles will make the rich capitalists respect the common man!

When the pain you've caused your family is seen as merely an investment in a better future, how does it feel to know the only thing you've ensured for them is an early death?

That's kinda fucked actually.

1 (the character that everyone gets wrong): ok this one is tricky for me bc to some degree im cool with ooc-ish stuff on the case of like aus/personal interpretation/whatever AND i am actually someone who doesnt actually read a lot of fanfic and doesnt have tooooo many really strong feelings abt characters outside of phantom hourglass so this one i had to think abt for a bit for a character that i have strong enough feelings on and actually like. care and know how ppl popularly interpret them. i am a bit of a hater but its very specific haterism a lot of the time. so i don’t really have much of an answer for this? (except to say im a bit put off by ww/ph link as like some hardened rough and tumble pirate type, that’s always felt off to me)

So, what I remember was that the hermits all go to an MCC event that's just to celebrate everyone.

But the event gets infiltrated by hybrid traffickers, who use high-pitched noises on a speaker or something to hurt the hybrids, and they set the game mode to hardcore

Grian gets revealed as a watcher, and Ren gets neck sliced (I think), but doesn't die because the spirit of the Red King keeps him alive and is basically a whole other entity. Also, Martyn is wearing a maid dress through the entire thing

But then Grian manages to get kidnapped, and basically all of mcyt team up to try and save him

"Who ever heard of a diagnostics department?" she retorts distractedly. She slows. "You're hiring a fellow. Maybe even two, if you can find that many. This is a teaching hospital."

House doesn't retort. She looks at him suspiciously and he twists his expression as if to suggest he has no idea what she's suspicious about. "Hire a fellow," she repeats. "That Treiber kid -"

"Don't like him. He's abrasive." House all but bats his eyes, the picture of innocence.

Cuddy shakes her head. "Fine. Sulk in the hallway. I have to go."

He doesn't argue. She hurries towards the arriving elevator. He watches as she tries to enter before the doors close. A blond kid sticks out his arm to block them, flashes a thousand perfectly white teeth at her when she says thanks.

Ooh ooh can I ask what was THAT SCENE for Meet Cute and/or Echoes of the toy guitar??

(Please ignore how long it took me to notice there was an ask in my inbox, I swear my eyes work mostly fine.) I’m assuming this is referencing that post about scenes that inspire you to write whole stories, if not, my bad! Please correct me lol. For Meet Cute it was the dialogue in general. You may have noticed but character banter is my favorite thing to write and Man Baffled and Bewitched by Woman is probably my favorite ship dynamic, so I came up with the banter first then needed a story to put around it. For Echoes on a Toy Guitar, it was the scene where ghost Hector smashed the radio because Ernesto was singing Remember Me. I almost didn’t write it because I wasn’t sure how to pace it, but the idea of Hector promising to never leave his wife and child again, when it’s already too late for him to be with them, was too tragic not to write it.
