yeah, I think neither of them planned it through
(I always feel hesitant when drawing fanart on paper, but I've been feeling such a strong pull towards traditional art lately (as you can guess, I tried and couldn't bring myself to work on this comic digitally), so I want to see if a switch from digital fanart to traditional is possible and worth if for me).

Some Snow Hound sketches from the Yin Yang Masters: Dream of Eternity
I have so much love and feelings for Snow Hound and all of the blame (ie: thanks) goes to MountainRose on ao3. I am so incredibly fond of every single piece of their writing, especially their yym fics and especially how they write and expand on all of the shishen/spirit guardians. Specifically this chapter really kick started my Snow Hound love but really it’s everything.

Why would those guys overblot? What the heck?!
Oh. Not hard to explain.
Aaron Claw - overused his magic and was getting annoyed with a classmate.
Rayan al-Mena - Overused his Unique Magic + a classmate was getting on his nerves.
Elise Page - got blamed for someone else's mess, got mad about it, and lashed out.
Jian-Yu Song - miscommunication and also a stupid classmate.
Aster Nightshade - Annoyed with a classmate, someone ate his cake, and overuse of magic.
Longwei Jiang- overuse of magic.
Caius Luna, Xavi Luna, and Varian Luna - all three overblotted at the same time because they argued among themselves, so there was lots of netative emotion there.
Ester Thorn - overuse of his Unique Magic + lost control of his own emotions.
Xue Long Yang - a build up of negative emotions (self-doubt, doubts about friends, feeling as if some things were his fault, not telling anyone he had problems.)
Overall, they are all #CertifiedDumbasses

I’m pretty sure it comes back down to the division of souls and what pieces remain versus which ones go onto the next life, which makes it much more that Wei Wuxian was able to restore that.
@jiangwanyinscatmom explained to me that one of the Daoist concepts of the soul consists of ten parts, the three hun and the seven po (for legend of Zelda fans, I’m pretty sure it’s the exact same thing) and the hun is Yang oriented and goes on to the afterlife when someone dies, whereas the yin po lingers on earth and must be settled through proper treatment of the body, being buried within a certain amount of time and dying with few resentments in life to bind it there after death. The more resentments or the worst a body was treated after death, the more the po lingers on earth and must be dealt with in other ways, such as the liberate-suppress-eliminate triad. This is also part of what creates resentful energy in the world in general, all of this is yin energy that lingers after the Yang has passed on. Po souls are especially susceptible to corruption over time, born out of resentment for the living for having what they do not, which is what creates malevolent ghosts. This is relevant for why people wanted to know where Wei Wuxian’s ghost had gone when he died, and what’s really notable about him remaining a peaceful ghost for all of those 13 years that he was dead.
So when it comes to fierce corpses, most of them are going to be purely po or yin driven, the living part of their soul has passed on and this is what’s left over. It dwells on the regrets and grudges the person died with, and can only be settled by handling those regrets and grudges so that the po can feel satisfied and let go. With the Intrusion ghost, his po was easy to satiate, he wanted to find that lost jade necklace and return it as a genuine regret he had at death, but also he needed to punch the asshole in the face for all that he had done for him in order to let out that anger in his heart. Being liberated now, he could move on fully and become a full soul in his next life. However this doesn’t always work, as the larger a grudge you hold, the worse the resentment afterwards and it is possible to make a spirit or fierce corpse that cannot be liberated. This is where Nie Mingjue falls in on this scale, he’s too full of rage and resentment to have his spirit eased by anything now, he’s just walking around hunting anyone who’s living and anyone of Jin blood in particular, and has to at the end of the story be sealed away, or suppressed, in order to deal with his resentment because he’s just too far gone.
Most fierce corpses are just Po creatures wandering around being mad at things, but the problem with that is that they are made up of completely dead, stagnant energy and those bodies and spirits still decay with time too. Fierce corpses rot, specific grudges decay into just pure rage. In order for a body to be preserved and maintain its strength, you need that Yang energy back, you need a balance of some sort.
This is where Wen Ning and Song Lan come in. And this is what Wei Wuxian does that makes Wen Ning unique and scary.
Wen Ning is initially an ordinary fierce corpse, animated by his resentment towards the living and specifically the people in the Wen Prisoner camp who tortured him and others he knew to death, but it’s not really safely focused and he’ll slowly lose what little sense of himself as time passes on. Wei Wuxian is able to, at Wen Qing’s behest and with a lot of experimentation and Lan Wangji’s help, summon his hun back into his body and make Wen Ning in a sense, a living soul inside a dead body. Now his body is preserved, he can talk and interact with the world again, and he is his own person more or less, though since Wei Wuxian is the one who summoned him back, he is in a sense somewhat under Wei Wuxian’s control.
This is completely different from ordinary fierce corpses and it is somewhat terrifying if you are the sort of fool who would think that Wei Wuxian could just do that to anyone or teach others how to do it. Wen Ning is a man who feels no pain, who has some level of healing ability given that we know he breaks his arms multiple times but they never stop functioning as arms, can fight without tiring and has all the rational thinking of a living being to aim and hone these skills. As fierce corpses go, he truly is unique, and perhaps what is most scary is that he and Wei Wuxian fight in harmony as allies, rather than a puppet master and a puppet. Wen Ning is someone who has most all of the perks of being dead and being alive, and the downsides are things that many people would not mind as much as they might think.
Song Lan is like him in the end, but Xue Yang was never able to achieve what Wei Wuxian did as well, hence needing the needles to control him. As for how and why he could do it, he did have access to Wei Wuxian’s notes and plenty of time in order to try and recreate another corpse like Wen Ning for his own use, since as he told us, Wen Ning is too loyal to Wei Wuxian and even his needles couldn’t override that, but even his biggest success was still a failure in comparison to Wen Ning, who defeats him handily in Yi City after fighting hordes of lower level fierce corpses all night and protecting the juniors in the process.
So in answer to your question, he’s special because he has his consciousness and because it was restored by Wei Wuxian and he is not playing by the same rules as ordinary fierce corpses, especially since unlike all the rest of them, he also gets to choose when he’s done and return back to the cycle of reincarnation. He is a true act of necromancy and one who is as fine as someone could possibly be with his current situation, since he has been given a second chance at not just existing, but living.
Was Wen Ning so special as a corpse because he regained his consciousness, or was he special as a corpse because Wei Wuxian was able to return his consciousness?

My headcannons on the Yiling Laozu's Evil Notes on Demonic Cultivation™️:
Full of shorthand that makes no sense. Zero. Nobody but WWX knows what agsbsu is short for and at this point they're too afraid to ask
Xue Yang, showing a page to JGY: maybe im just an uncultured dumbass or smth but whatever the fuck does it mean to "put your entire cultivationussy in the talisman"?
"As shown in fig. 1-" (fig. 1 is a bunch of stickmen that look like theyre doing something but nobody knows what)
Mo Xuanyu and Xue Yang pour over two pages for three weeks because they don't know what the fuck a "spirit with the most disgusting, blood-curling rancid vibes" is and so they can't summon it
"If you want to revive the consciousness of a fierce corpse follow these steps: 1. Don't"
There is a page in which "ALL JINS ARE BASTARDS" is written in capital letters and underlined three times
Long winded description of a process followed by "...at least i think thats how i did it tbh i was busy trying not to die, need to revise this"
Detailed step by step demonic cultivation thing interrupted by a grocery list
"Blood pool gets very cold, needs to warm up or it clogs and the texture is horrible, do not recommend."
"Resentful energy will sing annoying songs in your head when you try to sleep. Avoid sleeping."
Then there's more haphazard stuff that makes no sense at all anymore, like it was written in a frenzy
The last few pages become some sort of blood and tear stained journal
"I'm sorry, Shijie. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please forgive me."
"I hope Jin Ling can forgive me for taking his parents away."
"I wish Lan Zhan didn't hate me so much."
"This is pointless."
"They're coming to kill us all tomorrow."

A-Qing, the magnus archives au
c'mon kids don't be shy, talk to the ghost girl trapped in the creepy skin book
Tumblr media
I couldn't NOT draw her in celebration of that one the magnus protocol episode that ruined me *c r i e s*
[SUPPLEMENTAL]
•yes that last part is her page in the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead, fun right?? we are all having fun right???
•Xue Yang killed her and trapped her soul into the book instead of Xiao Xingchen, because she interrupted the ritual by trying to beat his ass for long enough that the already gravelly injured Xiao Xingchen could die before being bound to the book.
•The best case scenario in her head was to at least let her traumatized mentor die in peace , and it worked well as her last fuck you to Xue Yang too.
•gerry keay parallels and all that.
•also, "she confided in the previous archivist" means "there's a whole ass statement somewhere with all the tea on this weird cult", that would probably be a lead to whoever is looking deeper into this entity stuff.
•where's the book now?? mmm idk, but it would be reeeeally crazy if three college students with a youtube channel were to get their hands on it huh?

Lan Xichen is clearly shaken by what WWX and LWJ tell him about NMJ’s death after the discussion conference. He has doubts, he is concerned, and in response to this he decides to USE THE EVIL SPIRIT AFFECTING MUSIC ON HIMSELF to SEE IF IT HARMS HIM.
(A normal and hinged thing to do)
(it harmed him)
If we use Nie Mingjue’s behavior as a metric for what this selection from the Collection of Spirit Turmoil does to a person, we can reasonably assume it causes or exacerbates at least SOME of the following:
Disrupts spiritual energy such that a person progresses towards qi deviation
Emotional instability
Violent outbursts
Prone to suspicion or paranoia
Nie Mingjue is already prone to literally all of these things, but they ARE also the things the seem notably exacerbated at the end of his life. Whether it was The Song itself or merely the proximity to qi deviation which caused/exacerbated these things, we cannot be sure, but as the latter is caused by the former, there is no functional difference.
In Guanyin Temple, very shortly after Lan Xichen would have used the song on himself, he is notably distressed, his faith in JGY is further shaken, and he’s manipulated by Huaisang into killing Jin Guangyao-- something that is both understandable in context AND clearly horrifies him for the rest of his life.
Given the circumstances (learning what he’s just learned about JGY’s involvement in NMJ’s death, and then learning everything else he does during this scene), he was going to be upset with Jin Guangyao regardless. He was going to have questions, he was going to have doubts. But I do think it’s WORTH REMEMBERING that this man had JUST used the same song ON HIMSELF that Jin Guangyao used to speed up/cause Nie Mingjue’s qi deviation and death. It provides additional context for his reactions, both within the scene and after it.
Lan Xichen has spent over a decade on the same page with Jin Guangyao about JGY’s motivations, goals, and often even the unfortunate but necessary methods he needed to use to achieve said goals. LXC is not NMJ; he absolutely understood that JGY going undercover during Sunshot involved killing some of their own people, and he understands that that was unfortunate but necessary. He understood JGY’s situation with his father, understood that JGY was not in a position to do anything about JGS’s decisions wrt Xue Yang, supported JGY through everything it took to make the watchtowers a reality. NMJ told LXC about JGY killing his superior officer, and LXC went “I’m sure he had a good reason” and just MOVED ON. He’s not under the impression that JGY has never hurt anyone, broken the rules, or committed a crime-- he just does not care, because he truly believes that JGY is a smart, capable, and well intentioned person and therefore those are things to be understood and compassionate about, rather than condemn and scorn him for. He may not have been aware of the extent of JGY’s crimes, but he didn’t feel like he NEEDED to be. He knew JGY, and that was enough.
Under normal circumstances, Lan Xichen’s wish when finding out something that upsets him (especially with regards to his friends), is clearly to talk about it. The greatest example is when Nie Mingjue loudly and repeatedly threatened Jin Guangyao’s life-- Lan Xichen wanted to talk it out. FOREVER, if need be. This is a man who understands that mitigating circumstances exist (especially when it comes to JGY) but solves problems with people he KNOWS with words.
So he finds out JGY killed NMJ, and his response is horror. And his solution to that horror is that he wants answers. He wants to talk about it. Why didn’t you tell me? If you felt you were backed into a corner, why didn’t you tell me that either?? Why didn’t you come to me??? TALK to me???? It could have all been delayed even longer solved if only--!!!
And yet, despite more than a decade of defending JGY in the face of an entire society blaming JGY for everything they could, in Guanyin Temple he’s swept up in the mood of the scene and condemns JGY with the rest. He knows JGY better than anyone else, but is made to doubt this. He’s left wondering if he ever knew the man at all, simply because he’s shown a new side of him.
And he responds to that feeling with violence.
He lives in a world and holds a position in said world that necessitates and normalizes violence, but he himself is not prone to it, especially with loved ones. Yet he doesn’t threaten to tie JGY up, magically mute him, have him tried for his crimes, nor does he SIMPLY react instinctively in perceived self defense-- it’s notable that he threatens death. While the circumstances are different, he does the same thing Nie Mingjue did (threaten JGY’s life), and I don’t think it’s irrelevant that he must be not entirely himself to get to that point.
In the Untamed, during the Guanyin Temple scene, he even slaps Jin Guangyao. And while I believe this is not canon to the book, I don’t personally think it’s out of character BECAUSE I think it’s a further nod to there being something wrong with him in this scene.
And his actions in that temple is, again, something he struggles to grapple with and regrets for, as far as we know, the REST OF HIS LIFE.
Right until the last moment, Guanyin Temple is a scene in which Lan Xichen is made to suspect that he’s never known Jin Guangyao at all, and Jin Guangyao is made to believe that he’s never mattered to Lan Xichen like Lan Xichen does to him. And in the very VERY end, when Lan Xichen chooses to die with him and Jin Guangyao doesn’t let him, they’re both shown that that doubt was unfounded. Jin Guangyao may be many things Lan Xichen was never willing or permitted to see, but he is also, fundamentally, everything Lan Xichen has known him to be.
And Lan Xichen never, ever, wanted to harm Jin Guangyao

More anime sv au, this time with a Binghe protag
After Dungein no naka no hito, went to watch Mahou Shoujoni akogarete (thanks flu, you are so damn helpful I can’t go to work or to class -_-‘) and just the first episode made me itch to make it a sv au!
so like, imagine a world where ppl see magical girls Qingqiu (SJ), Qingge (LM? Liu Mingshi? Liu Ming? Idk) and Qingxing (SY) fight against monsters and protect their town with the power of friendship and love (although SJ does it more reluctantly, he wants to protect his beloved Yue Qi maybe?)
And there’s this young girl, bright eyed and shy and sweet! Who admired these magical girls and longs to fight with them. She is practically obsessed.
this cute sweet girl is named Luo Binghe and has just been chosen to be the villains’ organization new talent!
LBH does not want to fight her idols okay??? Bit if she doesn’t then the little creature who affirms to be an old demon will send her mother the transformation sequence video! She can’t be seen like this! And in such an attire! How could she!
so she does what the little spirit tells her and realizes…she is enjoying this…way too much
especially Qingxing’s face contorted in pain, flushed with embarrassment and asking why Binghe is doing this to them
is…why is it so…tempting? Why does she crave those embarrassed faces? She loves the magical girls! Why would she enjoy hurting them?!?
and then it happens again and again and again… and LBH cant help it anymore
She tries so so hard!!! Truly!!! She prays everyday for any god to help her overcome this weakness! She can’t concentrate in class! She stares at the blank pages of her homework and can only think of a tied up Qingxing! She has to pass this next exam with a high note or she will lose her scholarship but the only thing she can think of is- is…!
She…she! She is being corrupted by this power!
(Not really, she is just … lusting)
every single time she is overcome by the urge to see them tremble and mo- no! No!!! She has to resist this! She can’t…stop…when their clothes get thorn and show their skin…she wants to make that pale skin redden and hear them cry out!
and qhen they fight back and hit her…its even better!!! Her heart fills with joy when the sweet Qingxing smacks her with sides with her baton, or when the cool and collected Qingge flushes all over in anger and embarrassment and throws herself at Binghe…or even when Qingqiu throws her best punches at her face, she even looks to be enjoying it too…
Why does she like that so much?
When she is transformed is like she is almost like another person, all her desires come to the surface, and she only wants to play! Why is she such a bad bad person????
And maybe later she meets Xiao Hua (SHL) who wants to fight the magical girls for protagonism of her own, and Mobei-jun (Mo Xue maybe?) who is angry that the magical girls want to reclute her not-yet-gf to their side and put her in danger!
She learns that everyone has their own reasons to fight, and that is part of life to discover oneself…and who knows, maybe gain a couple of partners in the process?
(lol, im thinking that since both og!LBH and sv!LBH have a high sex drive, this little girl discovering her own interests and trying to fight them bc she believes she is actually doing something evil is very interesting, it would make even more sense for SY-LQG to start falling for LBH’s sweet sweet and charming tortures, even when they won’t admit it!
but also LBH fighting the spirit that gave her power -maybe Mdme Meiyin?- but falling each time to the temptation XDDDD
Im still watching it so i may adds to this idea but feel free to use it too, but this is a mix of silly and hot that i just wanted to share hehehe)

Something about xue yang growing up in the streets abused by nobles. While wei wuxian also survived in the streets by running away from dogs. Meng yao, xue yang and wei wuxian all of them looked down upon by the cultivation world simply for their origin of birth. Yet these nobody orphans and bastards managed to cause such long lasting damage to the same clans that their names have been permanently recorded in the pages of history.

I was unable to comment on your posts on patreon, but saw your question in the reading commentary:
Ok so which one is it!? I feel confused because I know ExR makes the difference between Gui and Mo. I went to the official 7seas translation and in both cases they write "demonic"! (Vol.4 Page 83) which is unbelievable cause Wei Wuxian would never say that his path is the Mo Dao. I really wonder what the original text says.
I'd like to explain this! I think this is a translation inconsistency. In the original CN, Gui is a subset of Mo. Everyone including WWX refers only to Mo Dao in terms of the cultivation path. It's the Dark Path in contrast to the mainstream, "righteous" Bright Path.
There's four types of evil beings in MDZS:
妖 yao: made from living non-human beings. The living Goddess Statue, Tortoise Xuanwu, both count in this category
魔 mo: made from living humans (living puppets). There aren't any examples I can think of in MDZS (Song Lan wasn't puppeted until after he's dead, right?) but, this is the word most commonly translated as "demon".
鬼 gui: made from dead humans. This is the classic WWX stuff like Wen corpse army etc. Translated as "ghost" usually
怪 guai: made from dead non-humans. I also don't think there's any examples in MDZS.
But importantly, WWX listed all these in Cloud Recesses under the same cultivation path, 魔道 Mo Dao. All are subcategories of Mo Dao. So he is indeed cultivating Mo Dao knowingly. It's up to interpretation, but personally I think that makes his moral character very interesting OvO
Ok thank you so much! With your permission I'll give an introduction to those who don't know what this is all about.
I'm reading Mo Dao Zu Shi again and making a commentary on my Patreon page. (It is public by the way, so everybody can see it)
The quoted part in this ask refers to my question regarding the things Wei Wuxian says to Lan Wangji when the latter visits him on Burial Mounds and they part:
A moment later, Wei WuXian spoke up, “Lan Zhan, you asked me if I intended on staying like this from now on. To be honest, I’d like to ask something as well. What can I do apart from this?”
He continued, “Give up the demonic path? Then what about the people on this mountain?
“Give them up? I won’t be able to do it. I believe that if you were I, you wouldn’t be able to do it either.”
He continued, “Nobody can give me a nice, broad road to walk on. A road where I could protect those I want to protect without having to cultivate the ghostly path.”
(This is ExR translation version. The official 7seas uses "demonic" in both cases. Reading the ExR translation, the difference between demonic and ghostly path has been made by the translators in other parts of the text. For example, Wei Wuxuan saying that he never practiced the demonic path, or Lan Wangji telling Wei Wuxian that the ghostly path harms body and soul etc. So I was confused - why would Wei Wuxian himself call the methods he used as demonic? I was sure that this is a fault in the translation or maybe me not understanding something in Chinese culture)
So back to the things you wrote, fist of all thank you so much for finding the time to answer me! I really wonder why you couldn't comment on Patreon itself? Public posts are available to comments both for paid and free members.
Now, if I understand correctly what you say, "Mo Dao" is a large umbrella term containing all types of "dark" cultivation that are not the "righteous" canon cultivation method practiced by all sects? Meaning that both what Wei Wuxian does (Gui Dao) and what Xue Yang did (Mo Dao) can be considered "Mo Dao"?
Then, in this case, how does using this term works for Wei Wuxian's benefit if he wants to stress out that he uses the ghost path and not the demon path (meaning that he specifically uses dead corpses and not living humans?) isn't it also justifies the false rumors spread about him as being the "mo dao zu shi?" I remember reading in other explanations that the whole thing of him being called this way was the misunderstanding and the spread of false info about what Wei Wuxian actually practiced.
So now I'm even more confused hahahaha if you have a further explanation I'd be so grateful!! <33
I'd really just prefer if all the translation left the terms in pinyin. (yao, mo, gui and guai) so that this confusion wouldn't exist :(
Btw, I think that what Xue Yang did to the townspeople in Yi City was considered mo dao, right? He sprinkled the corpse poisoning powder on them making them into living corpses for Xiao Xingchen to kill.
"guai: made from dead non-humans. I also don't think there's any examples in MDZS." - does it only include animals and plants, or objects as well? Does what Wei Wuxian did to the paper puppets in Yi City count in this category?
