hey just for the record, if youโ€™re on r/ao3 and keep running into these kinds of comments on bookmark related posts โ€” itโ€™s not a good take. calling someoneโ€™s writing โ€œslopโ€ and saying it deserves criticism for being bad BECAUSE itโ€™s posted publicly might seem like a nuanced take, but I promise it isnโ€™t.
yes, sometimes us writers get a little too obsessed over a cryptic comment or bookmark; no, that doesnโ€™t actually mean the solution is to say whatever you want in them because authors โ€œdeserveโ€ your honesty. ๏ฟผ
I know weโ€™re in a touchy time for readers and writers, but comments like these are NOT kind, refreshing, or nuanced. theyโ€™re just kind of mean and discouraging.

Something incredibly satisfying about knowing your craft and the confidence that goes with it. Just the casual โ€œyeah I could make thatโ€. Want a band tee? Yeah I can embroider my own with the lyrics I want. Bridesmaid dress too long? Yeah I can hem it. Need new slippers? Yeah I can crochet a pair (and give them bunny ears). And of course itโ€™s not perfect but nothing beats that feeling of being able to craft your own solution with your own two hands

As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyoneโ€™s accepted it, Iโ€™m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#โ€œan object created and controlled by companiesโ€ anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a โ€œtoolโ€#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is โ€œautomationโ€ you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always โ€œwell i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on youโ€#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

for people who havenโ€™t read the shadow and bone/ six of crows books, but have seen the show:
- inej ghafa is a survivor of childhood sex trafficking. she has ptsd and reacts in a panic attack at even walking past the menagerie
- kazโ€™s trauma isnโ€™t just pekka rollins being responsible for jordieโ€™s death, and waking up on the barge. he had to swim to shore, age nine and barely alive, using jordieโ€™s body as a float
- the darkling has done far worse things than are shown on screen. he is not a โ€˜lost manโ€™ and alina is not his โ€˜balanceโ€™
- alina was seventeen upon the darkling being nsfw/ romantic with her
- matthias helvar did not lead drรผskelle, that was jarl brum- matthias is only just barely an adult himself
- the crows are not their own separate gang, they are part of the dregs, who per haskell leads and kaz takes over from haskell after haskell sold out his lieutenant (kaz) to pekka rollins
- zoya, genya, and alina have personalities outside of either being traumatised or hating each other
- alina never wanted any of the power and fame and idolatry, and in the end of the books is stripped of it all. she is very happy about this
- jesper is a gambling addict and somebody who watched the death of his mother

Prompt:
Jason keeps accidentally drawing parallels between his running away to Ethiopia and getting killed.
He leaves a note saying heโ€˜ll be back soon? Three terrified bats AND a supe crashing through the roof of a 7/11.
Casually mentioning heโ€˜ll be going overseas to check up on a lead? Surprise! Nightwingโ€˜s going the same way! What a coincidence!
Jason pushes someone off the roof? โ€œDonโ€™t worry Jaylad, I know it was an accident!!!!โ€
The next gig takes place at an abandoned warehouse? โ€œExplosives whomst?? No, Jason, of course I didnโ€™t scout the area beforehand. Donโ€™t be absurd. Your bombs?? Oh, those were yours?โ€
Look, itโ€™s not that Jason doesnโ€™t appreciate a demonstration of how much they care. But heโ€™s getting seriously fed up with the level of overprotectiveness everyoneโ€™s displaying.
Although, in retrospect, he could have handled this whole thing better than having an open spat with Bruce and then disappearing on them for two months straight. Oops.
(In his defense, Kori got them cards for a once-in-life-time-space-opera.)

My thoughts here mainly revolve around YSA as the mary sue/female lead type character:
She goes from being this perfect woman to. just being a woman. And my idea is that the weight gain isn't there to make her "unconventionally attractive," or whatever other dumb phrase you wanna use to avoid calling someone ugly, but to make her conventionally attractive, yet realistic.
Instead of looking like a skinny waifu character, she looks like a skinny human woman. Her hair swaying in the nonexistent wind isn't as perfect, her magic blush is missing and she has eyebags. She's still hot, just more human.

I find that the recent rise of black and white thinking on the internet has led to an interesting phenomenon in F1 fandom spaces.
Nowadays a famous person needs to unsullied in all respects (morally, ethically, performatively) in order to be deemed unproblematic and worthy of support. Itโ€™s become impossible to be a fan of a driver and to recognise faults them in any way, because surely if youโ€™re a fan of a driver and they mess up, then their mess up taints you in the same way it taints them (morally, ethically, performatively).
Putting driversโ€™ ethical โ€œbad takesโ€ aside, this has impacted even how fans respond to their driver simply having a bad weekend. Itโ€™s odd when a driver makes a human error or has a (even slightly) less successful weekend, and a significant proportion of their fans go into a panic and start finger pointing at anyone and everyone - the track, the team, the teammate, the stewards.
The false dichotomy here seems to be that either the driver has โ€œlost his touchโ€ or the driver was unfairly sabotaged or disadvantaged in some way.
Itโ€™s so strange. In the guise of supporting their favourite driver, these fans hold them up to an impossible standard where they are either bullied or washed.
In reality, their favourite driver is a human being and heโ€™s going to pick himself up and go again next week.
