wait, im kinda confused now, doesn't osdd also develop from a trauma in childhood? Or am i missing something??
OSDD is not just the “plural disorder.” OSDD-1, the ones with alters and systems, does form from childhood trauma. OSDD is diagnosed when someone shows signs of a dissociative disorder, but does not meet criteria for an already existing dissociative disorder.
The main dissociative disorders are Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Dissociative Amnesia, and Derealization Depersonalization Disorder (DPDR).
If one does not meet the criteria for those but shows signs of a dissociative disorder that significantly impacts their life and functioning, they can be diagnosed with OSDD; and usually the person will be given a reason as to why they were diagnosed with it, but not something else.
There’s technically 4 “types” of OSDD, but i remember that someone will not be diagnosed with “OSDD-1” or “OSDD-2.”
I feel it also important to mention that, according to the wiki, these are not actually types; they’re just examples of presentations that can be experienced or observed in those diagnosed with OSDD. There could be more and different examples of presentations possible with OSDD.
It is just all OSDD, and a reason will be specified. Taken directly from the wiki, “An example would be specifying "OSDD (dissociative trance)".”
Someone who shows signs of a dissociative disorder but doesn’t mean criteria for the ones above, and isn’t given a reason why, can be diagnosed with Unspecified Dissociative Disorder or UDD.
These guys can also potentially have alters and systems and the like, they just aren’t diagnosed with DID or OSDD either because of a lack of meeting criteria somehow, or more likely, because there’s a lack of sufficient time. Possibly other reasons as well.
Taken from the Wiki, these are the 4 descriptions of 4 example presentations that can be present in the “catch all” diagnosis of OSDD;
“Chronic and recurrent syndromes of mixed dissociative symptoms:
The DSM states, "This category includes identity disturbance associated with less-than-marked discontinuities in sense of self and agency, or alterations of identity or episodes of possession in an individual who reports no dissociative amnesia".
The ICD-11 describes this presentation as "Partial dissociative identity disorder".
(This is the one commonly referred to as OSDD-1/OSDD1, and OSDD-1A and OSDD-1B. Systems and alters, like DID, but not DID because they fail to meet a specific criteria to be diagnosed with DID. OSDD-1A and OSDD-1B are also community terms im sure, someone will not be diagnosed with these letters or terms or numbers.)
Identity disturbance due to prolonged and intense coercive persuasion:
The DSM gives the examples of "brainwashing, thought reform, programming, indoctrination while captive, torture, long-term political imprisonment, recruitment by sects/cults or by terror organizations." People with this presentation, as a result, may experience distressing changes to and/or questioning of their identity.
(This one is commonly called OSDD-2. A very well known but fictional example of this is the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes from the MCU.)
Acute dissociative reactions to stressful events:
This category is used for acute dissociative episodes which may last anywhere from a few hours to weeks, but typically less than a month. The dissociative conditions are characterised by "constriction of consciousness", including "depersonalization; derealization; perceptual disturbances (e.g., time slowing, macropsia); micro-amnesias; transient stupor; and/or alterations in sensory-motor functioning (e.g., analgesia, paralysis)."
(OSDD-3.)
Dissociative Trance:
This category represents a dissociative trance; "an acute narrowing or complete loss of awareness of immediate surroundings that manifests as profound unresponsiveness or insensitivity to environmental stimuli." The DSM specifies that "The dissociative trance is not a normal part of a broadly accepted collective cultural or religious practice".
In the ICD-11, this condition warrants a separate diagnosis of Trance disorder.”
(OSDD-4.)
So all in all, OSDD is simply a “catch all” diagnosis. Those diagnosed with it can have prolonged, childhood trauma—and those diagnosed with the first example presentation of OSDD typically and often do—but experiencing prolonged, childhood trauma is not a requirement or required thing to be diagnosed with OSDD.
“OSDD-2” is often even something that’s diagnosed due to extensive trauma, abuse, and manipulation experienced later in life as teenagers, young adults, adults, or even elderly.
One can experience this type of abuse as a child as well of course, but it’s not childhood specific.
Those who undergo the same type of abuse and trauma that those with “OSDD-2” (aka OSDD (Identity disturbance due to prolonged and intense coercive persuasion)) do, can instead be diagnosed with DID or “OSDD-1” (aka OSDD (Chronic and recurrent syndromes of mixed dissociative symptoms)) if they’re a system (because im pretty sure someone will not be diagnosed with two dissociative disorders, even if their experiences and symptoms match up or overlap with two), and not everyone who undergoes the abuse and trauma that those with OSDD-2 do will be diagnosed with OSDD-2 or any type of dissociative disorder.
For example, not every survivor of human trafficking or other forms of organized abuse develops a dissociative disorder or is diagnosed with OSDD-2, even if they experience some dissociative symptoms (likely as coping mechanisms) and likely have PTSD/C-PTSD symptoms. Just the same as not every cult survivor is diagnosed with OSDD-2.

Plural culture is
"why did I lie about that? That's not true at all, I don't feel that way about that thing"
"wtf do you mean, that's absolutely true and how I have always felt about that thing"
"do we not have the same thoughts and feelings on this??"
"HAVE YOU BEEN TELLING PEOPLE THIS LIE REGULARLY??"

I need to ramble about this so bad!! Please be aware that this blog contains spoilers to poppy playtime chapter 4.
The way we unironically relate to chapter 4 in a different kind of level? It’s hard to explain but we kinda do. Although I’d like to talk about Doey! He’s such a system coded character and we really like how well written he is. Despite his sad story, they really show the struggle of dealing with identity after scientists basically murged the 3 kids into one dough body. Those kids are Matthew, Kevin and Jack! You can also see that on his body there are hands of different colors. Orange being Matthew, Yellow being Jack, and Red being Kevin. Throughout the game their tone of voice kinda changes and you can SORTA tell who’s talking.
You can also tell the difference in personalities too and how sometimes it feels like they’re fighting themselves. Matthew is the understanding one who’s really protective of his family, Kevin is more angry and cold, Jack is more emotional.
On another part of the game too, it’s almost like a switch front situation where there’s confusion as if one kid came out and is lost about what’s going on. And in a different part when Doey is mad at the player you can tell that the crying part could be Jack (or all of them), the anger is clearly Kevin, and Matthew is trying to remain calm. I do generally love though that again they still show that they are children dealing with this nightmare. Overall we just really relate to the identity struggle and confusion that is present in Doey’s character! Chapter 4 was really good!
Reminder we are aware Doey does not have DID/OSDD, it’s just how his character is that feels system coded but we don’t think he has either disorders.

upon reflection I like Doey a lot more than I initially did. Here's why: I realised hours later that the jaded anger I felt wasn't rational emotion. Doey made me feel simultaneously apathetic and enraged annnd I think that's because he's better written than I gave him credit for because he managed to gut punch me in the insecurities so hard I shut down.
Strange feeling in the boss fight. Being chased down by a representation of you, not the host, you, the problem alter. All while it cries in your ear and narrates your thoughts at your worst moments aloud.
ig it's fair for Poppy Playtime but the thing I still dislike is that Doey's story ended like it did. The same way the trope always goes, the problem alter ruins everything and gets the whole system killed while violently lashing out at someone. I get that it's ppt so everything has to end in bloodshed one way or another but did it have to go that way? Even just having one of the 'gentle voices' be the first to snap rather than Kevin would have been leaning into the stereotype less.
alternately, I also see the poetry in what it is. If the safe haven represents the safe place in our mind and it is gone, the scared children are lost again and the world becomes as it was as an infant - confusing and bleak and unbearably painful. A psychological nuclear meltdown, fuel and control rods and metal fusing together, creating corium that becomes worlds more devastating than the nuclear fuel itself.
all in all, it is well-written as a tragedy and I understand that it had to be because of the genre. I just wish the stereotype could have been subverted even a little bit.

I’m a little curious about something. In the Theory of Structural Dissociation, OSDD falls into the secondary type— which is described as “secondary dissociation with a single ANP (Apparently Normal Part) and multiple EPs (Emotional Parts).”
But does it mean all of the OSDD types—1, 2, 3 and 4– or does it just mean OSDD-1? I’m assuming it means all of them, because C-PTSD, disorders of extreme stress, and BPD (I even found a diagram that puts szpd’s levels of dissociation up there too) are there too—but people often forget about the other presentations of OSDD whenever they talk about it, so im curious.
I’m assuming that individuals with OSDD-1 and OSDD-2 are likely to have comorbid diagnosis of PTSD or C-PTSD as well.

I always seem to think the best while I'm at work or it's 3 in the fucking morning.
Killer but he wants a new name and the Stages but they want their own names too. Probably wouldn't happen but there's always a slim chance they'd explore the notion far into the future of love and safety and where they learn to cut themselves some slack.
They probably would still collectively go by Killer, but have a list of names and nicknames along with it, like K, Kay, Kat, Strawberry, Krill, something related to a comfort of his or just a name he happens to like or finds funny.
But each Stage separately might still subscribe to the numbers pattern of names, particularly Stage 2 because that's my favorite motherfucker right now. Maybe he just likes being called Two in many languages, Dos being his most favorite.
Stage 3 I don't think would care about the names thing, but surprisingly Stage 4 is receptive to words in morse code in which it can communicate nonverbally and while it doesn't assign itself a name preference, perhaps it ends every message with a particular pattern or signal. It could be a vague sign it likes the look of or maybe a tune or specific sound.
Stage 1 would be the most indecisive of if they even want a name change or just another name seeing as they carry the bulk of the guilt for their past and have to fight themself to stop looking for punishments, death, or isolation. But if I look through this with the angelkin!Killer lens, perhaps he'd like something with a theme related to that (can't think of specific examples) or maybe a gemstone like Onyx or Ruby (playing off of dragonkin!Color's attachment to shiny priceless things)

"shine on, everything will be alright if you shine"
lily lightly means more to me than i can ever put into words, though i have no memory of it i know for sure i adored her as a child. she shows (literally) that it is okay to be different, and when you embrace those differences you will shine.

Super fixated on Poppy Playtime after chapter 4! You guys should totally fill my comments with theories, headcanons, etc after seeing the new chapter !!
I will say I do wish we saw a little more of Yarnaby and the Doctor but I still enjoyed it regardless. Seeing all the secrets were also crazy but also sad for sure.

broad thoughts on episode 4
i've seen some people so wildly misinterpreting the latest episode; no, the new mask wasn't possessing me or making me do things or changing my feelings at all. it's a "masquerade" because it's a performance, a barrier, a MASK. it wasn't breaking easily because i felt like i needed to keep my happy face on, to continue socially masking... it turns out that an ongoing manic episode is not a healthy way for me to exist, who would've guessed... my comedy mask (and the plastic mask) is not what i actually need to feel good, that's me masking my true emotions because i feel like no one likes the real me... that's why i was acting like a corporate drone and keeping the smile on, talking about giving up on my dreams, etcetera...
and! i can feel a full range of emotion, even if i am usually just a weepy sad sack. this episode is really helping me figure these feelings out and reminding me that i matter, and i shouldn't hide myself away... so i want to post more artwork here! i hope you guys all liked the new episode as much as i did...
