11k notes and this entire thing is filled with misinformation after misinformation. Headcanon Bruce to be whatever you want but leave Clark and Kon out of this because Clark was NOT a bad dad, hell Kon and Clark don't even have a precise father-son relationship. Their relationship is difficult to categorize on purpose because Kon can be like a brother or a cousin as well. Clark did not take the existence of Kon well at the START. But he accepts him and respects the kid very quickly.
Kon's name being a slur was a N52 thing with Kara, and it's been made obsolete and retconned. Here is how Kon-El really came to be:
Lex is not a good father or anything to Kon either. In Rebirth, Kon didn't technically exist in their universe yet but Clark was great about Kon:
(Action Comics 1022)
Clark really wants to help Kon, he is upset he doesn't remember him when everyone else does. CLARK CARES! He cares a lot even if the initial reaction to the news about how Kon came to be freaked him out. Which is understandable, because he did not consent to any of this but he accepted and guess where Kon is now? Guess who he hangs out with now? Superfam.
People act like Clark being a bad caretaker/sibling figure for Kon is canon when it is entirely fanon. Clark is a flawed parental figure, he is flawed with Jon too, but he tries his best and grows. Fuck everyone saying Clark Kent is worse than Bruce "I have given 5 Robins issues about themselves" Wayne as a guardian. I am DONE.
clark, discussing what to do about kon with bruce: you know what this means right?
bruce, nodding: yeah, you owe luthor a buttload of child support
clark: what - i - no??
bruce: i mean, it sucks that he baby trapped you but you don’t want to be a deadbeat
clark: he did not - i am not his father, luthor stole my DNA and put that [pointing at kon] into a tube
bruce: i want you to take one good look on how damian came to be
clark: … oh my rao… i am dead beat aren’t i?
#clark kent#kon el#batfam stans say the dumbest fanon shit and expect everyone to just go along with it and not get mad when faves are heavily butchered#like i'm sorry- i love superfam and it fucking kills me when they are outright ignored & mischaracterized to prop up a fucking bat#only one of these families are ACTUALLY getting along- constantly together & help on another in current canon#with minimal conflict#and it's NOT batfam#and talia damian test-tube baby thing was racist as hell by the writers#damian's conception and brutalia having a kid has had like multiple origins#talia wasn't manipulating bruce into liking her ew#they consensually had sex because they liked each other#when talking about talia keep in mind that she's been written y orientalist racist assholes who willfully demonized her#though she was a love interest and a morally good character#and the demonization happened ONLY because she's arab#I'm fucking DONE#eat shit

Finally Getting Help (prt 8)
Masterpost
The next day was less chaotic but not by much. They had to go through everything they’d taken from the Fenton’s lab, and reluctantly accepted Danny and Jazz’s help with the task because they were familiar with the tech. That was surprisingly needed since all of their gadgets were extremely obtuse and looked like household appliances. It was honestly surprising how good Danny was with all of this stuff, he knew what everything was, how to take it apart and how to put it back together to show the heroes how it worked.
“They don’t all work for humans. Some have to be fueled with ectoplasm so they need to be constantly refueled. Dad used to wear a backpack full of the stuff ghost busters style but that’s really not practical so this one isn’t very useful to you. I can use it though,” Danny said as he screwed the last part back on the.. Whatever it was.
“Okay, but why does it look like a blender?” Tim asked, baffled and impressed.
“Oh that’s because that’s what it was built out of,” Danny said with a crooked smile. “We repurposed a lot of household items into tech. Give me a couple toasters and a microwave and I’ll have three specter deflectors ready for you before dinner time.” He said as he pressed his hand against one of the gins and it started glowing intently green.
“Here don’t drop it,” He said tossing it to Batman, who did manage to catch it. “I fueled it with three shots, just in case Vlad shows up or another ghosts threatens you. And actually even with your charms I would feel a lot better if you all had specter deflectors since you’re all involved with me now,” He sighed and rubbed his face.
“Well… we can get you toasters and a microwave but we can also get you more advanced parts if those will work better,” Bruce told Danny, gingerly holding the odd gun away from himself. It wasn’t a traditional gun so it wasn’t upsetting but he still didn’t like it.
Danny looked very tempted but he shook his head. “No I’d better do it with what I know, I can get it done faster that way and they work. I’d love to play with some of those more advanced parts though. I’m sure I can come with some fun stuff.”
Uh oh, Bruce didn’t like that look on Tim’s face, the last thing he needed was more encouragement! But Danny was the child of mad scientists, he would get along perfectly with Tim, Bruce was going to have to keep a close eye on them to make sure they didn’t accidentally make a death ray.
“You can join me in my lab later,” Tim offered hopefully and Danny glanced up at him with a borderline feral grin.
“That sounds great, I’m sure you have much better lab safety than my parents. Love engineering, would hate to die a second time.” He said it like a joke, just the way Jason tended to. Jazz laughed, but only to encourage her brother’s coping method, no one else did.
“Alright, we’ll go to the nearest home appliance store and get you some toasters and microwaves,” Bruce said.
“Hell ya, I should have been adopted by a rich family years ago,” Danny cackled. Oh dear, he’d been so traumatized yesterday Bruce hadn’t realized he was Feral. Why did this keep happening.
He informed Alfred of Danny’s request and by the time they finished going over the more confusing inventions and left for lunch the appliances were waiting for Danny in the lab that he and Tim would apparently now be sharing. Danny immediately dove on the machinery starting to take them apart with practiced hands. He seemed calm and in his element but Tim stayed to supervise, both just in case something went wrong, and because it was His lab and they hadn’t talked about rules of cohabitation yet.
Bruce left them to it. Alfred had informed him that Jason had arrived and headed straight to the kitchen without saying hello to anyone else. It wasn’t a surprise, he was closest to Alfred, he’s want to help with making dinner, and get the basic scoop from his most trusted family member before having to face anyone else. Bruce knew better than to intrude on that, but God did he want to.
Regardless of what his children thought Bruce cared deeply for all of them, and he hated that sometimes they doubted it. He wished he was better at telling and showing them, but he’d managed to convince himself it was too late for him to change so he didn’t have to face the years of mistakes and trauma he had endured and inflicted. No matter what what image he tried to project, he was still only human.
He went to his office, but he couldn’t settle to anything, he did a little bit of this, and little bit of that, and just ended up pacing the carpeted floor. He left them alone as long as he could before he gave in and went down to the kitchen.
“Sorry to interrupt, I just needed a cup of coffee,” He said as casually as he could. The looks Alfred and Jason gave him said neither of them actually believed his excuse, which was fair. “It’s good to see you Jaylad, thanks for coming.”
“Well I’m not going to miss out on a new brother am I? You gonna have this one running around in spandex too B?” He asked, raising an eyebrow, it made Bruce wince but it Was progress because he was acknowledging their familial ties.
“I’m almost two years too late to stop him,” Bruce said regretfully. “It’s been… a lot has happened. I’m sure Alfred caught you up on most of it, but I’d like to talk to you before you meet either of the siblings.”
“Trying to make sure I won’t be a bad influence?” Jason asked and Bruce couldn’t tell if he was joking or accusing.
“No, nothing like that,” Bruce said, holding up his hands. “I just want to talk.”
Jason hummed skeptically, scrutinizing Bruce before turning back towards Alfred. “What do you think Alfie, can you spare me?”
“I always appreciate your help master Jason, but I can manage on my own,” Alfred assured, sounding amused.
“Alright, to your office then?” Jason asked, turning back towards Bruce.
“Or the sitting room, whichever would be more comfortable.”
“Office,” Jason said firmly, this was the distance that he was keeping between them. They worked together now, and Jason cared for his siblings, but he kept them all at arms length. For everyone’s safety really, if they set him off he didn’t want to hurt them, and he didn’t want to be set off either. It always felt like shit. Jason followed Bruce to the office and sprawled in the soft chair across the desk from Bruce’s. He remembered being a kid, sitting properly and nervously in this chair across from Bruce hoping desperately for his approval. How times change.
“I just wanted to talk to you about the new kids” Bruce started and Jason waved him away.
“I’m really not going to corrupt them or anything, I Probably won’t be around enough to make a difference anyway.” Jason said dismissively.
Bruce took a deep breath, controlling his expression and folding his hands on the table. “That’s not it Jaylad, Alfred must have told you that the boy died and came back?”
Jason tensed and green swirled in his vision, it was the same thing that Bruce had seen in Danny when Zatana asked about Phantom. “Ya he did.” Defensive and insecure.
“It seems like he, and his sister who was sort of a caretaker to him, know a lot more than we do about the effect that that has on a person. To help us take care of Danny she gave us a presentation about it, it… makes a lot of sense. You should probably talk to her and Danny about it really but I just wanted to apologize.
“I’ve been trying to fix this, fix… you for a long time and I know I’ve been going about it wrong and I’ve been hurting you.”
“You got a new treatment plan in mind, old man?” Jason asked, his arms crossed and Bruce wished that mistrust wasn’t earned.
“No,” Bruce sighed looking down. “Really Jason I don’t, I know I was wrong. This is something I just didn’t know I didn’t know about,” He hated his own ignorance, he hated to admit it! He was Batman! The way he kept up with other superheroes was always being prepared for everything and knowing more than everyone around him, but he hadn’t even known there was something there to know!
“This isn’t about that, and it’s not about you staying away from the new kids. Exactly the opposite actually, since they know more about this, and Danny might be one of the few people who really understands what it’s like to die and come back like that, I was hoping you’d spend more time here, around them. I think it might help you both.”
“Huh,” Jason sounded, blinking rapidly because that was the most sincere apology he’d gotten from Bruce and he didn’t quite know how to react to it. “Maybe… maybe.” He hadn’t met the new siblings yet after all, maybe theyd hate each other.
“Can I meet them now?” He asked looking back up at Bruce curiously.
“Of course, the girl's name is Jasmine Fenton, called Jazz, the boy goes by Danny. Jazz is turning 18 soon, Danny is 16.”
Right Tim had mentioned that, so Danny was about 3 years younger than him then. That shouldn’t matter too much, and maybe Tim will be right about the sister and can tease Jason about it. He’d been single for a while and wouldn’t mind changing that.
“Of course, I think you should meet Jazz first, she’s protective of Danny and she hasn’t been very involved in all of this. I think she’d feel better being allowed to… vet you first for lack of a better word. Are you okay with that?” Bruce asked Jason politely.
“Sure, I don’t really care what order I meet them in and… Look Bruce I know I’m mad at you, and I was really hard on Timmy when everything was still raw. But I’m never going to knowingly hurt a kid, or make life harder for them. If I can help them I will,” Jason said sincerely.
“Jason, the girl is less than a year younger than you. You’re a kid too,” Bruce said sadly. Jason froze for a moment, Yes he was 19, his mind wasn’t fully developed yet or whatever the hell, but he hadn’t felt like a kid since his death. Even before that, the responsibility for his mother, and then the work as a hero. Bruce wanted soldiers, Jason had never gotten a chance to be a kid really.
“Whatever,” Jason scoffed, shoving his hands into his pockets and standing up, closing himself off from that sincerity. “Do you know where she is?”
“She’s in the library,” Bruce said, his lips twitching up in a smile. “She loves books almost as much as you did, though she seems to be more drawn to non-fiction.”
Jason hummed and nodded, heading towards the door since he knew his own damn way to the library, Bruce didn’t have to lead! He did follow through, he was clearly protective of these kids so of course he would want to be there when Jason met them.
When he entered the library he saw a young woman sitting at one of the tables with some sort of text book. Her back was straight and her legs tucked under the chair with her ankles crossed. It looked like she was self consciously trying to look put together. She looked up at them, blue green eyes looking him over critically, he could practically see her picking him apart in her mind and he tried not to fidget.
“Hey, it’s nice to meet you, I’m Jason Todd,” He said, walking over and offering her his hand to shake. She was very pretty, but he was surprised by his own complete lack of attraction, she just didn’t register that way, she seemed more… maternal almost.
“Ah, the dead son,” She chuckled, getting up from the table and reaching out to shake his hand, her grip was strong and her hands were soft and cool. “It’s nice to meet you, they mentioned you. Nothing bad,” She added when she saw her face. “And I don’t mean to be rude, I know some people are sensitive about their deaths being mentioned. Danny jokes about it all the time so… I just wanted to let you know that I know, and I accept you.” Jazz said with a warm smile.
Her easy acceptance caught him off guard and before he could help it he was baring his teeth at her in a snarl, defensive and probing, did she mean it? She grinned sharper bearing sharp fangs at him in a matching sign of… friendly aggression, something inside him settled. He chuckled and took a step back. “Well thanks, nice to meet someone who doesn’t look like they bit a lemon every time I make a death joke.”
“It’s your death, as long as it’s healthy you can own that however comes naturally to you,” Jazz promised, sitting back down at the desk. “I’d love to talk more and get to know you, but we can do that later. You really should meet Danny.”
“You don’t want to come with us,” Bruce broke in, sounding worried. Jason had almost forgotten he was there, he hadn’t realized how… all encompassing the short interaction had been.
“I’ll probably follow,” Jazz said with a shrug, her gaze turning stern as she looked at Bruce. “Remember what I said about never breaking up a fight,” She told him firmly.
Well if that didn’t make Jason nervous he didn’t know what did. Why would he fight with Danny? Would Danny fight with him? Why? “You really think it’s a good idea for us to meet? Why would we fight?” Jason asked her sharply.
“Of course,” she agreed, her eyes softening as she looked back at him, though her expression remained a little mischievous. “It’ll be good for both of you.”

love tropes with the bat family
characters: bruce wayne, richard "dick" grayson, barbara gordon, jason todd, timothy "tim" drake, stephanie brown, cassandra cain, duke thomas, and damian wayne
bruce wayne
arranged marriage
• the marriage was arranged by his parents and your parents to merge the two most powerful families in gotham, providing both financial stability and social influence. bruce only went along with it because he wanted to honor his parents’ last wishes.
• initially, there's a distance between the two of you. he’s so consumed by his quest for justice and his role as batman, that he doesn’t really have the time to truly get to know you. meanwhile, you’re just trying to understand your role in his life.
• publicly, the two of maintain the appearance of the perfect, high-society couple, attending galas and charity events. behind closed doors, the two of you sleep in separate beds and barely talk to one another.
• alfred becomes a mentor and confidant to the both of you, helping your navigate your new life together and offering uncle iroh level advice.
• it isn’t until you get hurt, that he begins to realize the depth of his feelings for you.
• DEFINITELY says the, "who did this to you?" line.
• this marriage brings a new dynamic to his life. you have your own skills and resources and you become an integral part of his crime-fighting efforts.
• your presence in his life helps him heal emotionally, offering him a sense of family and home. this support strengthens him, making him a more balanced and effective hero.
• you both work towards a shared vision for gotham, combining your immense resources and influence to create lasting change, honoring the legacies of both your families. <33
richard "dick" grayson
you fell first, he fell harder
• charming and attractive, it’s hard to not fall in love with dick grayson. he’ll flirt and send compliments someone’s way, effectively tampering with their feelings. it’s no surprise when you find yourself having romantic feelings for him.
• despite your best efforts to keep your feelings hidden, dick starts noticing the little things—how you laugh at his jokes a bit too eagerly, how your eyes linger on him a bit longer, and how you're always there to lend a hand.
• as you spend more time together, you can't help but be more obvious about your feelings. you find excuses to be near him, offer to help with his missions, and bring him coffee during late-night patrols.
• one day, during a particularly dangerous mission, you do something reckless to save him. that’s the final push he needs to confront and confess his feelings for you.
• ANGRY LOVE CONFESSIONS>>>
• he never noticed you. but now that he had, he couldn't un-notice you.
• once you find your way into his heart, it’s hard for him to let you go. more and more, he starts finding himself constantly wishing for your presence.
• he constantly tells you how much you mean to him and how he can't imagine his life without you.
• this man met you, fell in love with you, and has been falling ever since. <33
barbara gordon
the korrasami trope (i didn’t know what else to call it)
• both of you had feelings for dick, but he ultimately chose you. after he made his decision, she began to act extremely cold towards you.
• despite this, you constantly went out of your way to ensure that she didn’t feel left out. you included her in activities and made an effort to show her that your relationship with dick didn’t have to affect your friendship with her.
• she becomes jealous when she sees you and dick together and for the longest time, she thought she was jealous of you because you were him. she soon realizes that she was actually jealous of HIM because he was with you.
• during the times when dick was busy with his duties as nightwing, the two of you would often find yourselves alone together. these moments of forced proximity brought you closer, and that’s when she started to develop feelings for you.
• you start to notice subtle changes in her behavior around you. she becomes more attentive, goes out of her way to spend time with you, and shows a genuine interest in your well-being.
• she struggles with her feelings for you, torn between her loyalty to dick because of their friendship and her growing love for you.
• girlie is down HORRENDOUSLY for you. <33
jason todd
enemies to lovers
• you hate jason, he hates you. just the thought of him irritates your whole being, shakes your bones in anger, his name leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.
•this man will NEVER stop bothering you, he likes to see you stressed out and angry, but he lowkey thinks it’s cute that’s why he likes to piss you off.
• you intrigue him, when he started to bother you he was legit hating on you but as time flew by, he somehow liked your attention on him.
• being an annoying piece of shit= your attention.
• despite your differences and the fact that you and jason mixed like oil and water, on in the field, you guys grudgingly tolerated each other, working together to take out your enemies.
• the tension between the two of you is so thick that during mission briefs, bruce has to seat you guys across the room from each other, unless he wants to hear mumbled insults back and forth and glaring between you guys.
• the rest of the bat family teases the two of you relentlessly because they’re convinced that you guys are the perfect match for one another (they’re absolutely right).
• when he finally realizes that he has feelings for you, he tries to convince himself that he doesn’t in fact like you romantically but that he was just admiring your skills in the field.
• he actually finds himself looking out for you on missions, even though he won’t be upfront about it.
• he becomes somewhat awkward to be around, and the rest of the bat family immediately capitalize off this to bully him with it. but regardless, he finds himself drifting towards you a bit more, and picking up on some of your habits. as much as he hates to admit it, he wants to know more about you. <33
timothy "tim" drake
friends to lovers
• tim heavily values trust and loyalty. as friends, you’ve always been someone he can rely on, whether it's sharing secrets or working through problems together.
• despite being one of his best friends, he isn't overly expressive with his emotions. he shows his affection through small, thoughtful gestures – bringing you coffee, remembering your favorite snacks, or staying up late to help you with something.
• he gradually comes to the realization that he has feelings for you. once it hits him, he begins to avoid you, trying to process everything.
• however, he starts to get like physically sick because he misses you so much. plus, you called him to ask if they'd done anything wrong and the pain in your voice was too much for him to bear.
• it was impossible to ignore the change in his behaviour. for one, he couldn't speak to you in person without his face turning blindingly red. plus, not only does he struggle to look you in the eye, but he is also CONSTANTLY stuttering around you.
• when you decide to confront him about it, he kind of just blurts out that he’s in love to you. much to his genuine surprise (but literally no one else's), you told him that they loved him too.
• sometimes, he feels like an idiot for not saying or doing something about it sooner. you frequently tease him for not having picked up on his own feelings sooner— but for once, he graciously accepts it. <33
stephanie brown
fake dating
• after your ex breaks up with you, steph devises a plan to get back at them and make them jealous.
• the two of you were already best friends so it couldn’t be that hard. right? RIGHT?
• you’re both aware that damian doesn’t buy your little arrangement one bit. he just doesn’t believe that the two of you are dating because you’re such good friends. (and they were roommates!!!)
• steph has this raging pride when it comes to damian, so she’s made it her personal mission to convince him that you and her are actually dating.
• it takes a while for you two to get into the hang of it, but once you do, it’s like a regular routine.
• steph would definitely fall for you first. she’d hide her feelings behind your little charade, until the fake dating stuff starts extending into the time you two share together when no one else is watching.
• she still gravitates towards you on the couch when everyone has left after dinner at your place, pressing kisses to your cheek when she leaves even though everyone else is already gone. there’s no need to continue acting like this but she does.
• the fake dating thing really starts hurting her because she thinks that you don’t really like her like that (you do) but its nice to pretend that you do in those moments, that it’s all real even though it's not.
• the people who know of your secret knows that steph has fallen for you (except for steph herself, and you because you refuse to believe it).
• like, come on, she’s your BEST FRIEND (side eye). the two of you are idiots in love.
• the moment she realizes she’s in love with you is on another one of those dates that you both know you don’t have to go on but still choose to have anyway (your ex is already clearly jealous).
• she’s been getting this small tugging feeling with you a lot over these past few months.
• now she finally realizes it’s because she’s in love with you. <33
cassandra cain
childhood best friends to lovers
• growing up, you became adept at reading her body language and expressions, creating a deep, intuitive understanding between the two of you.
• as kids, you both trained together, pushing each other to become stronger and better. these sessions were filled with friendly competition, laughter, and mutual support.
• you two had a secret hideout where you would escape to whenever the world felt overwhelming. it was a place filled with memories, laughter, and dreams for the future.
• whenever she had nightmares or struggled with her past, you were always there to comfort her. your presence became a source of peace and security for her.
• you both shared a love for a watching old martial arts films and cooking together. these activities brought you even closer over the years.
• once she was settled into her new life with the bat family, she reconnected with you over lunch and there was a moment where it all clicked. her heart nearly gave out the moment she saw you walk through the cafe door and smiled at her.
• she was in love with you. she had been for a while now. but back then, she had taken your presence for granted. it was something she just expected to be there. but now? now it was different. now it made sense.
• it was a very natural progression from a friendship to a relationship. she felt safe with you, and she never had to worry about being misunderstood. after everything that she’s been through, you were the person who stood by her through all of it. <33
duke thomas
brother’s best friend
• one thing about you and duke is that you can both take a secret to your grave.
• no one ever finds about him sneaking out of your brother’s room during their weekend sleepovers, to cuddle up to you on your bed.
• no one finds out about the secret dates you go on in the next town over, so that you don’t get caught.
• no one finds out about the secret phones you both use to contact each other.
• if you have to be in the same room together, he’s not even making any eye contact with you. it’s better to ignore each other in public.
• it would be WAY too obvious that the two of you are dating.
• when you guys are seven months into the relationship, cuddling on his bed, he asks "how long do you want to keep us a secret?"
• to which you reply, "not any longer than you want to."
• so yeah, you can both keep a secret– until you decide you want to share it to the world.
• your brother is disgusted, but happy for you. emphasis on disgusted tho. <33
damian wayne
academic rivals to lovers (except he’s been in love with you this whole time)
• damian has always admired you from afar. everything from your biting wit to your competitive spirit always made his heart flutter. falling in love with you was almost inevitable.
• sarcastic, creative remarks as comebacks to one another’s argument, teasing and joking words that lead to banters and bickering.
you: "are you reading?"
damian: "it’s amazing how you have eyes but never see the use of them."
• you don’t know if it’s due to your clashing beliefs and ideas that you two just can’t get along. or is it because he just refuses to do so? eitherway, he still irks you off in multiple ways. even when it’s just the sound of his breathing.
• the two of you compete against each other in terms of being the best among you, as such your relationship is treated as something simply born and made by a competition, an unnatural way to form a connection with another but that’s just how it is.
• the fact that you two work really well when it comes to projects and research is something that can’t be denied. even when there are countless arguments being shared because of differences in opinion, you two still end up getting the work done flawlessly.
• despite everything, there was never a time that you two have touched on a sensitive subject while arguing or have you two have said anything personal and mean that it crossed the line. it’s just some useless and close-to-nothing banters that always occur— becoming a part of your daily routine.
• and of course, the two of you don’t lose your sense of academic "rivalry" when you two start dating. <33

We walk the wind-y road
Another glimpse into the past: Nicky's six, and you and Agatha are trying to make the most of your days together, constantly pushing away the nagging feeling that, sooner or later, everything was destined to change.
warnings: none, just fluff and tickles.
previous chapter
You, Agatha and Nicky were walking the path through the forest. It was a beautiful sunny day, with birds chirping in harmony mingling with the wind rustling through the leaves on the trees. Blades of grass crunched softly under your feet, adding to the peaceful sounds around you, distracting you, or more likely trying to.
You glanced over at your son then, the sight of him enough to put your heart at ease. It took you a second to recognize the song you three made up together coming from him.
Walk, walk, walk the Road,
I walk the windy road
Agatha’s lips tugged into a defiant smile, she lowered the book she was reading to focus completely on Nicky, who was strolling beside you, “you happen to walk this windy road all by yourself?”
The boy lifted his chin up and returned her smile, “no, mama.” The way he scrunched up his nose made it impossible for you to resist the urge to lean over to peck his forehead affectionately, “can we join you then, big man?”
His long brown hair swayed a bit in response to the wind blowing against his face. He nodded his head and cleared his throat to restart the song. Agatha scooted closer, humming along with Nicky right away, words lingering in the air, as to seal the promise to always stick together as a family. A vow you were desperate to keep, no matter the cost.
Walk, walk, walk the Road,
we walk the windy road.
These moments of peace, of complete domesticity between you three meant the world to you. Nicky was your whole world, yours and Agatha’s. And your life was apparently perfect, thanks to his presence, to the chance you were given in life to be his mother. A privilege you never once took for granted. However, your heart wasn’t whole. When Rio left you three, about six years ago, she took a piece of your heart with her, probably one of Agatha’s too to be honest. Despite missing her with all your soul, craving her affection and silly jokes, you lived with the hope that your reunion would happen years and years from now. Because you knew what that would mean for you three, then.
There was so much of Rio in Nicky: the shape of the eyes for starters, the tip of the nose, even the way his mouth curled at the corners whenever he smiled. You weren’t sure if that resemblance helped you cope with the separation from Rio, or it only made you crave her presence more and more. Maybe it was a mixture of the two things.
You knew that this idyllic frame wouldn’t last forever. This sense of… apparent bliss, calm even would stop someday. You knew you’d have to fight for your son to stay alive when that moment came. Your magic was strong, it sparkled in anticipation just to the thought of being put to use as if it was only made for this purpose. But neither of you knew when Rio would show up to claim Nicky’s soul. And no matter how many times you told yourself you were ready, the idea of having to face the challenge was terrifying. Because you were the only one able to actually do something to change Nicky’s course of life.
Whenever it may bend
Agatha tugged at your hand gently, apprehension written in her blue eyes. She could always sense when your mind was elsewhere, you’d scrunch up your face then, stare ahead of you, without really looking at anything in particular, and your magic would intensify, getting heavier around you, and affect everything near you. When she touched you, she felt a warm sparkle tickle her digits, you felt it too, making you quickly shift your focus, come back to the present, see her seeing you. You attempted to smile, “did you say anything?” Her thumb grazed against the back of your hand, and when she nodded her head, she repeated, “the song…”
You noticed that even Nicky was patiently waiting for your voice to mingle with theirs. So you gave him an apologetic glance and added your line. You needed to be there, to be present for Agatha and your son. Your worries could wait until night time to surface.
I’ll be there at the end
You three sang the song again, and this time you hummed along from the beginning. Your focus shifted with Nicky being at the center of all your thoughts. He was only six years old, and yet his intelligence and empathy was above your comprehension sometimes. Agatha told you often, with pride filling her voice, that you and Nicky shared the same braveheart, along with a generosity so rare and unconditional towards every living thing that caused her eyes to water if she lingered to think about it for a second too long. Even that cute dimple, just underneath his right cheekbone, came from you. Everytime he smiled, even more when he laughed, it would show up and light up the entire space around you. Agatha would call it ‘happy little bottom’, causing both you and Nicky to laugh at how cheesy she could be. She would make sure to see that dimple every single day, because that would mean that despite all the horrible choices she had to make to keep Nicky alive, at the end of the day he was happy.
Another incredible thing about Nicky was the fact that he knew to be different. He always did. And yet, he never asked questions about his condition, about why he would fall sick much easier than other kids.
He might not question that specifically, but he sure questioned more often than not why so many witches had to die every other day as if it was a natural chore to be completed.
And that happened to be one of those days.
“Mama, why do you kill witches?”
Agatha stilled for a moment while you clenched your eyes shut and let out a shaky breath; his timid voice replaying in your head and no matter how many times you came across the same topic, it would always shock you the same way. You couldn’t blame him for wanting to know the truth, nor could Agatha, however, it wasn’t an option to be honest with him about it. Because he was like you, too considerate, his heart too good for his own sake. If Nicky were to know all those killings were necessary to keep him alive, he surely would have something to say about it, despite his young age.
Agatha glanced at him only briefly, before coming up with a response, you knew it wouldn’t satisfy him, it being too simplistic, “to survive.”
You pulled the boy closer to your side, and he lifted his chin, this time looking at you. His eyes squinted, and you spotted the confusion filling his hazel eyes. He wanted more, he searched for more.
“Could we not stay with the witches and survive with them?”
Your steps came to a halt at this point and as you did, Nicky stopped too. Agatha watched in silence as you crouched down in front of him, so that you could speak to him face to face.
“I wish it was possible, my love,” you muttered with a hint of sadness lacing your voice. When he frowned, you ran both your hands to cup his cheekbones, thumbs gently stroking his skin, now slightly paler, and you knew he would need to feed on more magic soon. Not a single day passed without you wishing to take his illness, to transfer his condition and make it yours, but that was beyond your skills. You could do so many things, and yet the thing you wanted the most was beyond your limits. “Sometimes, as your mama said, in order to survive, tough decisions must be made. Decisions that don’t depend on you, though. I want you to always remember that, okay?”
He nodded quietly, eyes boring into yours, as a veil of understanding started forming in them. Agatha nibbled on her bottom lip, lashes fluttering quicker to ward off those angry tears that threatened to spill from her eyes. It was harder for you to kill, but you never backed away from doing it. You even resurrected a couple of them once, tried to apologize with tears in your eyes, mortified by the things you had to do, but they wouldn't listen to reason. All you found was hatred in their eyes, and not only they didn’t accept your apology, they also threatened to take yours, Agatha’s and Nicky’s life. You knew there was nothing to be done then, with your magic weakened by the effort of bringing those witches back, Agatha would shield you and Nicky and absorb their magic all over again, making your act of mercy completely vain. So eventually, you stopped doing that. Agatha begged you to, noticing what it was doing to you.
“You and mama are witches, right?”
You nodded your head, unsure where he was going with this.
“And you live together,” he reasoned, “You don’t try to kill each other-”
Agatha let out a quiet, sad chuckle at that. Nicky was clever, so much so that sometimes, it was hard to keep up with him.
“It’s different,” you quickly said, brushing a strand of hair behind his ear. “I love your mama,” Agatha’s heart swelled at your words, she licked her lips and nodded, glancing down at the two of you with immense love, a hand lingering upon your shoulder. Then you scooted closer to Nicky, lips against his ear as you whispered, “but I love you more.”
The boy giggled. It caught Agatha’s attention, and that’s when she crouched down next to the two of you, she asked with a cocked eyebrow, “what was that?”
You nibbled on your bottom lip, trying so hard to suppress a grin from curling your lips. It only caused Nicky to squirm and chuckle more, so you pulled him in your arms, “Nothing. Our boy was just craving some cuddles, right?” Agatha’s eyes lingered on those two dimples as they both popped out at the same time. She watched him wrap his arms around your neck, snickering and nodding at the same time.
Momma said she loves me more,” your eyes snapped open at his confession.
Agatha let out a defiant sound at that, “Oh, did she now?” There was a playful glimmer in her orbs when she locked eyes with you.
“You little snitch–” you started, voice morphing in a teasing and silly tone. Nicky dropped the rope the moment your fingers wiggled up and down his sides, tickling him immediately. The sound of his laughter soon echoed throughout the forest, muffling all the others and giving you the illusion that everything was fine, that your son was healthy with no invisible countdown threatening his life.
“Mama! Mama– help!”
“Oh no, big boy, now you face the consequences of your–”
Before you could finish that sentence, you felt Agatha’s hands slip down your waist, pulling you against her with such unexpected force, both of you stumbled backwards in the soft grass behind you. “Agatha, what in the world?” You chuckled and tried to break free, but she didn’t let you go, “I do believe I deserve an explanation, my love–” her voice sounded like a soft murmur against your ear. Her long wavy hair tickled your face as she drew closer, raising you soft goosebumps over your skin.
In the meantime, as Nicky’s laughter quieted down, his grin stayed, “get her mama! Use your purple!”
Agatha seemed tempted by the idea, whereas you not so much, “my purple, huh?”
“No, no, no– don’t you dare!”
Despite your warning, your voice carried more amusement than alarm, and Agatha didn’t miss it. In a heartbeat, she turned the tables— quite literally. She spun you around, and the world tilted as your back hit the cool blades of grass underneath you. A startled giggle escaped you, and you locked eyes with her, “Agatha Harkness, I am serious–” using her full name as warning, only fueled her intent to ruin you.
“So am I, baby,” Agatha grinned down at you, her knees on either side of you, pinning you effortlessly. She wiggled her fingers in mid air and that’s when you spotted a glimpse of purple over them.
The moment Agatha’s fingernails brushed against your sides, you couldn’t help the sound slipping from your lips– a mixture of a squeal and helpless laughter, light and almost childish. Another thing you had in common with your son was your ridiculous ticklishness.
She found out by accident, to be honest. Nicky wasn’t in the picture yet. There was Rio, though. You were lying on your stomach, nestled against Rio’s side in bed. Agatha’s arm lazily looped around your middle, her fingers tracing soft, absent-minded patterns along your skin, a sweet cuddle before sleep. When suddenly Agatha’s fingers skimmed your side, near your hip bone, your body jolted and a high-pitched sound slipped from your lips, which involuntarily startled them.
Rio’s chin lifted from its resting spot atop your head and almost laughed in disbelief, “Did you just– squeak?”
You groaned, already burying your flushed face deeper into Rio’s chest, making you miss the amused glimmer flashing into Agatha’s eyes, “I did not.”
“I think you did, my love,” she argued.
Before you could protest, her fingers ghosted over your side again, near the same spot, eliciting another yelp from you that turned into a real fit of giggles the moment she really started tickling you.
That’s how your little secret stopped being one.
Back in the present, Agatha felt her heart swell with love at the sight of that familiar dimple appearing on your cheek. Glancing over at Nicky, she realized he had it too, his own showing as a huge grin spread across his lips.
“Oh, would you look at that!” When her purple joined in, as Nicky suggested, adding a feathery sensation to your already oversensitive skin, it only made you thrash and laugh harder, “Pretty inconvenient for such a powerful witch like you to be this ticklish, huh?”
“Agatha– Stop it!”
“I don’t know,” she teased, her tone both playful, as she gave you another playful jab at your side. When your laughter turned silent and tears started prickling at your eyes, Agatha’s gaze softened and her fingers slowed down, but without stopping completely.
“What do you say, Nicky? Shall I let her off the hook?” She asked, glancing over at the boy, who had been watching the entire thing with a grin on his face.
The boy closer to the two of you, coming into your line of sight. You thanked the Dark Mother when he gave Agatha a nod of his head as a response, making her stop her innocent, yet disarming assault right away.
“You okay, momma?”
You weakly lifted a thumb up, voice a tad breathless as you tutted, “Y-yeah— peachy.”
When Agatha got off you, you propped yourself up and leaned on your elbows, finally allowing yourself to catch your breath, “I’ll get you two for this– just you wait.”
“We will be ready,” Agatha mused.
You rolled your eyes, and before you could formulate another retort, she leaned back down again, her hands slipping to your hips, not to tickle this time, but to steady herself. Her face hovered a few inches from yours, her long hair falling like silk across your shoulders.
The playful gleam in her eyes shifted into something else, a much tender look, that made your breath hitch and your heart jump in your throat all over again, “that was mean, you know–” your flushed cheeks betrayed just how much you weren’t really complaining about what happened.
Agatha tilted her head and cocked an eyebrow, “I’m sure I can make it up with you quite nicely–”
“Oh, can you?”
Humming softly, her lips found yours in a slow, unpretentious kiss, that put a huge smile on both your face and Agatha’s. The world stopped for a moment– the sounds around you, the voices inside your head, until an exaggerated groan pierced the moment.
“Ew, moms!”
You broke the kiss with a quiet chuckle, much to Agatha’s displeasure. She let out a dramatic sigh and leaned her forehead against yours, unwilling to let go of you just yet, “You should know Nicky, when two people really love each other–”
“Agatha!” You cut her off, a blush rising to your cheeks. “We are not doing this right now.”
Agatha pressed her lips into a thin line, clearly holding back a grin as she glanced over at your son, who didn’t seem very keen on learning about that just yet. “Right. That’s a story for another time.”

WHAT WAS THIS SHOW ABOUT?
One thing I really love about Steven Universe is that each of the four major characters kind of got a chance to be What The Show Was About. I would have LOVED spending more time with all of them and delving into who they were and who they became beyond what we got, but what we got was . . . actually pretty special.
STEVEN
As the ACTUAL main character and the show's literal namesake, it's obvious he's the protagonist. Our man has been through a lot and I don't suppose anyone would say he never got his moment considering he was there for the whole show. But except for some pretty important identity stuff that depended on his choices in the last episode of the OG show, a LOT of Steven Universe is stuff that happened to and around Steven. There was so much history and so much baggage that a lot of the story was about how he fended it off, dealt with it, fought it, reasoned with it, and managed everyone's emotions in the process.
Steven is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: being half human, being extremely young, being Rose Quartz's son, and having Diamond-level powers and a claim to the Pink Diamond throne.
We had to wait for Steven Universe Future before the show was entirely focused on him, his development, his trauma, and his healing.
Some episodes from the original show focused on Steven's mental health and growth as a person--most notably "Mindful Education"--but we just didn't get to linger very long with his development until the epilogue show because plot stuff was always happening, other people's feelings were taking center stage, and worlds needed saving. I'm really glad we got Steven Universe Future for that reason. Some people disagreed, but I felt like it was a long overdue look into the soul of who he is--how his central defining character trait was his selflessness, and how desperately he needed to address that without having it manifest in a toxic way in the tradition of Jasper, White Diamond, or Pink Diamond.
AMETHYST
It could be argued that Amethyst had the most careful, nuanced, significant character growth of the three supporting Gems in the show. And it started immediately in the first season, when she constantly squabbled with Pearl and revealed that she felt judged and stifled and treated like a misbehaving child as early as "Tiger Millionaire."
Amethyst is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: She's the clear outsider as the one who didn't fight in the war, the only full Gem from Earth in the group, the only Gem who grew up with no Homeworld dogma but also no roots, the only Gem who'd never met another one of her own and longed on some level for that connection.
The show continues to check in with Amethyst's self-worth issues throughout, giving us "An Indirect Kiss," "On the Run," "Maximum Capacity," "Reformed," and even "Cry For Help" (which seemed like an Amethyst episode until Pearl did her thing). We get "Onion Friend" when Amethyst shows us she thinks she's boring and that nobody values her. And we get "Too Far" when Amethyst really starts to internalize her inferiority based on Peridot's assessment of her and revelations of her origin.
With her cooking on that, we end up spending a string of episodes with Amethyst as the focus character. She's still shaking off dust about not doing what she's supposedly made for when a fight with Jasper twists the knife. She's beaten and insulted and almost physically destroyed, having to be rescued by Stevonnie. Steven misguidedly tries to cheer her up by letting her win at video games and she reveals that she thinks she's "the worst Crystal Gem." She finds an ally in him but still wrestles with her inferiority to Jasper. And when she still can't beat her in a rematch, she breaks down and realizes her strength is in togetherness. From there, she begins the process of healing, helped along by additional support from her family and finding some connection with meeting the Famethyst. When "Tiger Philanthropist" comes along and reveals that Amethyst doesn't need the outlet of wrestling anymore because she DOES feel she's good enough, we can reflect on what she's been through and how far she's come, and how that leads to her being the one who doesn't fall apart on Steven in the face of huge revelations about his mother.
GARNET
Garnet kind of peaked early, which is not to say it wasn't great. The final episode of Season 1 revealed her identity as a Fusion and further that she was "made of love," and then everyone was on the "Garnet is awesome" train.
Garnet is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: being a Fusion all the time, leading the team and generally holding the others at an emotional distance, never asking questions, offering resources to the others for stability and balance, being the only Gem with Future Vision and a massive responsibility to use it well.
"Jailbreak" was a huge defining moment for Garnet, and as the "stable" character whose worst problems were mostly other people's problems, she did not seem to need a character arc. She was the culmination of a love story, always awesome and strong and dependable and everyone leaned on her, and in "Jailbreak" we found out why she has such an amazing foundation. But the show was not done with Garnet. Not by a long shot.
Pearl hurt her badly in "Cry For Help." Garnet's breakdown and subsequent focus on building Pearl back up was a significant look into how Ruby and Sapphire operate as a couple. Garnet is amazing partly because she is the result of all that work, but who is she as a person? As an individual who isn't an individual?
We see some of her struggle with leadership as the show moves on--most notably "Pool Hopping," and some of the last episodes when she can't make decisions in the Diamonds' shadow because everything's become about Steven's choices. But Garnet gets a spotlight again when Ruby and Sapphire feel differently about the Pink Diamond revelations and they worry Garnet only exists because of a lie. Digging into the real answers of who they are together through finally asking "The Question," and defining their fusion in their own image, was a move toward more authentic stability for Garnet. Her wedding made headlines, and watching her spearhead the immediate fight against the Diamonds on the beach was awe-inspiring.
PEARL
Pearl is initially presented as "the perfect one"--she's persnickety, she's organized, she's hyper-competent, and she's all about rules. But something else is going on with her not far beneath the surface. The first Gem to die onscreen--because of overconfidence and a silly mistake. The first (full) Gem to cry onscreen (and then over and over and over), the first to have a breakdown (and then over and over and over), the only one of the four to have faced an impossible choice, a relationship that nearly destroyed her, and a secret that ate her up from the inside. She was the only one who had (nearly) the whole story. All along.
Pearl is set apart from the others in extraordinary ways: the oldest Gem of the group by far, the one who served a Diamond and kept Rose Quartz's secret against her own will, the one who doesn't eat, sleep, or shapeshift. The one who both sat at royalty's right hand and existed as the lowest form of Gem life--created to be a servant, with programming no other type of Gem must live with. Her anxiety, grief, and desperate loneliness makes her one of the most multifaceted and interesting characters in animation history.
We see some minor wigging out from Pearl in "An Indirect Kiss" and a more intense version of it in "Space Race," but we get a much clearer picture that Pearl is Not Okay in "Rose's Scabbard." At that point we assume she thought she was closer to Rose than she really was--that she thought herself special and partial to secrets no one else knew, but that it wasn't true. "Rose's Scabbard" is a different episode on rewatch. Pearl is right that she alone was the one Rose "told everything." She did have a special relationship with her that the others did not.
Pearl's insecurity continues to bite us in the face as the show goes on. She tries to mold Connie into a self-sacrificial super-soldier after her own image in "Sworn to the Sword." Her deep need for someone strong to tell her what to do leads her to betray Garnet in "Cry For Help." Her inability to appropriately make it up to Garnet further complicates our understanding of how she can be so lost. Her jealousy, inertia, and angst frustrate her relationships, with some nice resolution in "Mr. Greg." Peridot's lore drop about Pearls' slave status sheds light on this, and seeing her get underestimated and bossed around by other Homeworld Gems is disheartening as we move on, but when we finally find out that she was Rose's secret accomplice in a false murder that poisoned thousands of their own citizens and led to massive waves of death, and that Pearl's free will to speak about it was also ripped away from her, we finally know, we know why she's been so brittle she could snap all along. She's been trapped inside herself all this time--in an almost literal way--and it's a wonder she's managed to carry on. Pearl's arcs have often been deemed the most emotionally fraught and tinged with gray morality.
These characters all got some very important story arcs focused on them in the midst of moving the plot along. I think the show did a phenomenal job with not only emotional development but with fallout for the other characters. We got to see the Gems' (and other loved ones') reactions when Steven's mental health took a nosedive, and watched them learn more about how to be there for him. We got to see Steven's initially misguided attempts to hype Amethyst up when she was spiraling, leading to him offering her what she actually did need, along with Garnet and Pearl (as Sardonyx) misfiring a bit when they wanted to celebrate Smoky Quartz. We got to see Steven's curiosities and misgivings about Garnet's life as a Fusion, and how Garnet affects others when she does crack under the strain, and how Steven must step up to leadership when Ruby and Sapphire are separated and how Amethyst tries to take care of him while Pearl has a guilt spiral. And we see how Pearl's choices led to Garnet's silent treatment, Amethyst's sulky helplessness, and Steven's attempt to hold the family together; we see how Pearl's confession reformats everyone's understanding of who the Crystal Gems are and why they're even here.
And even when the show is taking careful turns with each character to paint their nuanced feelings and troubles on the screen, it still managed to give us such a worthwhile overall story, with action and backstory and worldbuilding and everything. What's different about it is that the center was always its people--their relationships, their psyches, their evolution and education. I truly love the balance these creators chose, and I remain grateful that we got to experience this story.

random Dizznee family headcannons that are part of my personal cannon
that get progressively more detailed
Kesler has a Tattoo of the alchemy symbols for fire, water, earth, and air on his right arm.
Kesler has glasses and curly hair, Milo Thatch vibes.
Juline is the one with Dimples and is the reason all the kids are sound sleepers shes harder to wake up than Dex. the only person who can successfully wake her up is Kesler
Bex has periwinkle eyes while Rex and Lex have turquoise Bex's hair is curly while the boys hair is wavy.
Kesler and Juline wear elven wedding rings which are similar to Cognate rings except that theres only one and it goes on the weares dominant thumb glows when their spouse thinks about them.
Juline has to wear her wedding ring around her neck when shes in her disguise because Kesler thinks about her so much that it’s constantly glowing.
Juline has a lot of jewelry with periwinkles on them and Kesler has a lot of jewelry with Snowdrops on them, because they like to wear little thingd that remind them of each other
Juline brings home human snacks and Kesler's favorite human candy is nerds and constantly begs her to get some. when shes out getting snacks she also gets them stupid grapic tees to wear around the house
Kesler was way more upset about her lying to him for ten years when he actually properly processed what she did and he just held it together in front of the kids. but they have a deal to never fight in front of their kids and apologize to their kids if they do.
Kesler runs warm and Juline runs cold (because froster) and they can’t sleep without each other
Juline badly picks her lips when she’s upset, along with frosting over whatever is around her because of her strong emotional connection to her ability.
when Edaline was a young adult she rasied Juline through teens because her parents deemed her difficult for not being able to control her ability, it resulted in Juline becoming very angry at everyone around her, and while she realized it wasn’t Eda’s fault she ended up taking it out on her often.
after making friends at school that didn’t call her defective, Juline’s mental health got to be a lot better and she apologized to Edaline profusely, Edaline was just happy to see her sister smiling again
Bex inherited her mom’s temper and is the ring leader of the triplets, shes the most outgoing has no filter and says what she thinks at all times, she likes to hang out with Lovsie because she likes having another girl in the house and was taught some basic fighting skills by her, while shes so much like her mom shes a daddys girl through and through and is the most skilled in alchemy second to Dex.
Lex is the prankster of the group and is the worst out of the entire family at alchemy, he goes out of his way to annoy people because he likes to get reactions out of people, his favorite uncle is the one who gave Juline and Kesler the Yeti as a wedding present and he looks up to him immensely. he also loves to create food abominations that he will eat as disgusting as they look.
Lex's full name is Alexander, he is the only triplet with a full name Kesler and Juline did this to confuse people and it works.
Rex is the mellowest and shyest triplet, he prefers to hide in his brother and sisters shadow, he is known as a troublemaker because people don’t care to tell the difference between him and Lex, he likes to spend time with Edaline at Havenfeild helping with the animals, after he doesn’t manifest he starts to isolate himself from his brother and sister and spend even more time with his aunt
Kesler and Grady where best friends before Jolie’s death and Kesler called him his brother, in reality he got along better with Grady than he did with his “real” brothers
Kesler and Juline where also broken up over Jolie’s death and constantly reached out to check on Grady and Eda, but when they seemed to want space they gave to them, Kesler and Juline still reached out every now and then to check up on them and let them know they loved them, but it wasn’t very often because they thought that was what Grady and Edaline wanted.
the triplets only met Edaline and Grady a handful of times in their memory because it was hard for their uncle and aunt to be around kids and the triplets high energy and overwhelming.
Juline and Jolie constantly exchanged letters, especially after she and brant where deemed a bad match Juline keeps all the letters in a box at the top of her closet and sometimes takes them out to read them when she misses Jolie.
Kesler and Juline where like the cool aunt and uncle to Jolie and they used to have family game nights once a week until she died, after her death the families drifted apart and didn’t get that closeness back until the kidnapping
Jolie was going to recruit Juline to the Black Swan and had written a note to her in her black cube that was kept until Livvy recruited her, she was given the box with Jolies note inside and keeps it in a locket
a lot of the black swan thinks Squall wants to be a homewrecker because of the way she talks about Kesler, not realizing he is in fact her husband and shes just so in love she can’t hide it even in a disguise.
part of Juline’s job is interrogating prisoners and shes lost coworkers she was close with whenever she has a hard day she comes home and cries into Kesler’s arms from anywhere from a ten minutes to a few hours.
Juline has a bunch of notebooks that she wrote to each kid, Kesler, and Edaline just in case she dies or has to wipe her own mind with the poison for her own peace of mind.
during the kidnapping instead of isolating themselves their families stuck together like glue over the two in a half weeks the kids where missing because they didn’t know what else to do
they started their family games nights after they got the kids back, and started a new tradition of movie nights at Rimeshire, where Sophie would show the family her favorite movies and they would make pillow forts to sit in while they eat their movie snacks.
Juline was pulling strings behind the scenes to keep Dex from going on missions and to just stay behind and work on gadgets, because she never wanted him to join in the first place, she didn’t want to lose him again
after revealing the fact that she was part of the black swan it took a long time for decks to trust his mom again because he was constantly asking questions she couldn’t answer, and he wanted to be let on more missions, but she wasn’t going to do either, so he was angry and upset (rightfully so) they had to work on their relationship for a long time afterwards

I feel really terrible for Sun, always have but especially now, I mean think about it, ever since the day he came online it has been an unpleasant ride Any one of the things that has happened to him would break most people, like the relentless verbal, emotional, mental, and occasionally physical abuse from Old Moon both before and after separation, then Eclipse came along and became another source of pain along with constantly robbing Sun of his bodily autonomy(especially since unlike Moon he wasn't locked to only coming out in the dark), the complete lack of friendship and care from the other animatronics, save for Monty and sometimes Puppet who think he's a joke, Foxy who's just plain selfish and tries dumping his crap on people, Roxanne who just tossed him out, Golden Freddy who thinks Sun is not worth much, Bloodmoon being an active threat and source of guilt after being killed, the Creator just being a pure existential menace, getting locked inside a tiny box where he couldn't even move next to a mirror for who knows how long by Moon, the October takeover, July 16th, constantly being teleported to perilous dimensions on a whim, dimensional threats constantly coming out of the portal Moon made on a whim, then Moon's death, which he blames himself for, even though I'd argue it wasn't 100% his fault considering Eclipse was going to impale him with a sword and neither Golden Freddy or Old Moon bothered to teach him how to control his magic so he wouldn't have an outburst, and Golden didn't supervise him when Sun had to put the runes down since Sun had only one shot, Lunar getting blown up, Eclipse getting the star and making everyone hate their guts along with just being threatening by virtue of all the power he now had in his hands, all of the grief and stress...And I know I am missing a lot of other bad things But then...Things started getting better, Earth was kind and patient, New Moon had so much more empathy and integrity and even if it was rocky at the start New Moon just being there and being a decent person helped Sun start to heal even if it was off-screen which doesn't count or at least got a break, Lunar came back and started healing too, Eclipse was finally destroyed, Solar joined in, things started getting brighter, even if his issues weren't fully addressed things were looking better Even when Ruin appeared, the family managed to pull together and seemingly deal with him even if Bloodmoon and Eclipse were revived, which was stress all on its own, yet despite Ruin they managed to pull through and were okay, even when Earth got hurt things bounced back quickly ...Then Solar's death, there was great grief over Solar but it seemed things might be alright, but since then everything has gotten exponentially worse, Moon completely spiraled out of control, broke every promise he made, to so quickly transform into the opposite of who he was, who he promised to be, into someone willing to kill his own family if they get in his way, not even Old Moon dared to actually try and kill his family, or entertain the idea of making a deal with the Creator, in only a matter of a few weeks everything became a nightmare And after all that, being forced by Monty, Foxy, and Puppet to make the choice between effectively lobotomizing/resetting Moon, or killing him, either idea being too horrifying for him to consider, to the point that he's been crying all the time, and now this, having learned Moon almost killed Earth, leaving her half burned and in pain from star radiation for days, with the knowledge that had Puppet not gotten in the way she would've died It makes you wonder if he thinks anything will ever get better, or if this is all life is, a cycle of pain, isolation, and betrayal, yet the fact that he has not completely lost it, that he continues to try to love and do good despite everything... I hope things will turn out okay
Well said 👏
I don't need to add anything 🥹
Thank you, dear anon 💗
I also hope things will get better but I think that they'll go even worse before that.. after all Sun lost Moon once again.. I can't see him bouncing back from that too quickly.. 😔
But I'm sure that after the darkest of nights there will be the brightest sunset.. a new day.. and things will get better ^^

Paperwork
tw/cw: arguing, mentions of past torture and SA word count: 5.4k Kamara figures out the real reason Simon and the team needs her.
Chapter Two
The car ride was silent. No one dared to touch the radio, and no one wanted to be the first to speak during the seven hour long car ride, one that was usually filled with joy while all passengers sang along to the radio music. “How long will you be gone, Mara?”
Simon kept his hands on the wheel, avoiding looking into the back view mirror and only making slight eye contact with Kamara, who was glaring at the man driving. “A few days, one week, max. But I’ll come back every night, just like I told you. I’m not leaving you.” She kept her stare at Simon while she spoke to her daughter, secretly addressing the boundaries of the operation without addressing him.
The adults greeted each other, giving each other hugs and helping to get Ellie settled. Simon knew Tommy from different missions they had been on, the two growing to be like brothers. Upon being introduced to Joel, Simon experienced a sense of having a family again. He looked to Tommy like an older brother, Tommy being over a decade older than he, and Joel like a father figure, although Tommy and Joel were only some years apart.
The brothers already knew who Kamara was before they met her, both from Simon’s terrible convincing that he only spoke so much of her because she was the team’s pain in the ass, and also because there was always a debrief held when she joined a team, the rumors of her many disciplinary actions spreading from unit to unit. No one could comprehend how someone could have so many Article 15s on their file and still be able to serve, but with the many debriefs of possible behavioral issues, every meeting also ended with praises of her exceptional ability. Despite being bounced around multiple units, one Captain fought to keep her, primarily because a certain sergeant refused to be the last needed vote for her transfer.
With that sergeant’s stubbornness, the Captain could see what he saw, another soldier fighting for what she believed, no matter what the rules were. She often went against orders, putting herself in harm’s way to protect her team, spontaneously running a plan that would be against many codes, but she got the job done, despite the write-up she knew came after. The Captain realized that the arrogant men–himself included–were too prideful to admit that a woman was the one saving their lives and completing their tasks. They labeled her self-confidence and cockiness as 'insubordinate' and insolent when she was just a headstrong woman who marched to the beat of her own drum–a threat to man.
When Ellie settled in, they all said their goodbyes, Kamara making sure that she explained the situation again. Her daughter already knew, and instead of being surprised, Kamara smiled at her, praising Ellie for how smart she was and gave her a goodbye kiss.
***
The couple walked together, making their way towards the building where the rest of the 141 waited, passing by many soldiers who were running drills, the sun still beaming upon them and the dirt beneath their shoes chronically dry, crumbling with each step. Kamara looked on edge, constantly looking in every direction, like she was taking notes of her surroundings.
“Who’s that?” Gaz asked, staring out the window. Simon had made a call giving the team a head’s up that he would be on his way, but he didn’t mention that he would be bringing company.
“‘Mare’. The Lieutenant’s Missus .” Price already knew the woman, having met her a few times, but he mostly knew her through stories that Simon would tell that obviously excluded a second party, or else almost nothing he said would be possible. Some other teammates, though, didn’t catch on to that.
“Missus? So he’s married, then?Soap was clueless, unable to fathom that someone would actually settle down with a guy who had once been referred to as the "asshole with the mask." Price nodded his head, a small grin on his face, amused at the obliviousness of the sergeant.
“Why d’you call her ‘Mare’?” Gaz was surprised, but not as nearly as shocked as Soap. He knew those stories were missing a few details, he just couldn’t figure out what they might be. Now he knew.
“‘Cause she’s a right paperwork nightmare.” It wasn’t the many Article 15s that made her paperwork a living hell, but the paperwork to reinstate her because of her many Article 15s that made processing her into the squad almost unbearable.
“Is she joinin’ the force?” The team hadn’t done well with anyone joining the team, only a few successes and multiple betrayals, however, their General seemed to assure them matters were being handled. “No, she’s just helping out. If she joins, I’ll have to fill out some paperwork.”
“Ye dinnae sound too keen on the lass.” Price actually thought she was great. He had only met her a handful of times, but it only took the first meeting to let him know that she was highly intelligent and quite impressive, despite the rumors he heard from her former superiors. “It’s not that. Just worried about what he told her to get her to come here.”
“What d’you mean?” Kamara had agreed to help the team, for sure, even if it took Simon days of convincing her, pushing past the boundaries his wife firmly created, but she had a set rule: no decryption. “She hasn’t been in a unit for years. She refuses to ever enter the military again.”
“Just means she wants tae help her husband. She cares.”
“We’ll see.”
Simon and Kamara entered the building, immediately turning the corner to see Price, Gaz, and Soap, who each kept their positions until the couple made their way to them. Kamara approached first, each of her steps keeping her in front of Simon despite his larger gait, he purposely making sure she stayed in front of him. “John!” she yelled from down the hall, waving and smiling from ear to ear once she had eyes on the man.
“Kamara! Lovely to see you again!” Price widened his arms to embrace the woman once she approached, and she leaned into his embrace, though it didn’t last long because of the chills that shot through her body. She released him as quickly and discreetly as she could without embarrassing either of them, but she locked eyes with Simon, who was saddened at the sight.
“I’m sure you are familiar with Gaz and Soap,” he said, pointing each one of them out as he spoke. Both of them smiled at the woman, her shaking both of their hands, “Ah. Yes, the Falling Man and the Man Always Knocking At Death’s Door.” The team chuckled in unison, Kamara smiling at the men’s enjoyment. “I like her,” Gaz said, Soap nodding his head in agreement.
“I’m glad y’all feel that way, but I’ll only be here long enough to translate the files and then I’ll be on my merry way. Now, where’s the file room?”
Everyone, but one, was confused, giving each other glances and Price sneaking one at Simon — who was trying to avoid all eye contact—, then looking back at Kamara. “I thought Simon would have told you this, but the files are on a flash drive. I can show you to the computer lab.”
“Huh? Oh no. I only work on those things if they're already decrypted.” Kamara had barely touched a coded computer since she was captured, afraid that any wrong decryption could put her at risk again. Even small coding practices to keep her up to speed seemed like a risk. Price could barely get any words out of his mouth, stuttering over the words he couldn’t form. “Aye, it is! We did most o’ the work ourselves,” Soap said, ridding Price of the burden of having to cover up for their friend who looked guilty even behind the mask.
“What about the rest of the work?” Kamara was smart, able to read through every word that people told her when they seemed to be covering up the full truth, though sometimes that skill seemed useless when she looked past her instincts for the sake of her husband. “Just the translating and deciphering left,” he said, looking at Ghost, Price and Gaz, staying quiet to keep out the growing tension. Kamara took a sly look at Ghost and his comrades, coming to the conclusion that someone was lying — but it’s her husband. There was no way he’d lie to her, so she ignored it for her sanity’s sake. “Alright, then. Lead the way.”
Kamara followed Soap to the lab, Simon staying back and being obviously scolded for his actions, though their voices were too low for Kamara to hear anything. It’s nothing, she thought, hoping that the conversation between the stakes-faced men was because of the stresses of their mission.
The computer lab was by authorized access only, clearly not the lab used for the other soldiers that roamed around on base. The computer that Soap appointed Kamara to was old, but obviously still very functional. He patted Kamara on her shoulder, sending another round of goosebumps up her spine, after he turned the computer on to reveal the not even half finished encryption. Wanting to be clear of the woman before she noticed, Soap tried to leave the room, but he was too slow. “Hey, Soap, if you don’t mind, could you bring Simon in here, please? I would like some company. It helps me work better.”
“Nae bother,” he answered, a forced smile crossing his face, his pace quickening once he had his back turned towards the seemingly calm woman.
Soap kept his eyes on the ground when he left, pacing quickly to his friend, who seemed to know that he was in trouble. “The missus is wanton’ ye for company. Aw the best,” he said as he gave Simon two pats of condolences to his chest. The team could practically hear Simon’s heart drop to the floor and, although it was expected, an angry wife was still scary, no matter how predicted.
He entered the room to see Kamara sitting at the computer, elbow on the table and her legs crossed. The noise from the tapping of her fingers adding to the tension that filled the room, Simon feeling his impending doom. “Simon.”
“Kamara.” Already, he knew he had chosen the wrong thing to say, having a feeling that it would have been better to say nothing at all. Her eyes felt like they were placing shards in him, ripping him apart without saying a word. “Would you like to explain to me why I’m looking at an encrypted file?” Not really.
He was silent, letting his body speak for itself. His guilt filled the air and could practically be smelled from a mile away. He kept his gaze on Kamara, struggling to keep eye contact, and while he hoped to win the staring game, he faltered, his gaze moving to the ground. His wife stood up, using her legs to brace herself to be in front of her husband, crossing her arms as she peered up at him.
“Nothing to say? Alright…” She disguised her anger in her calm tone, yet Simon could still hear the simmer in her voice. “If you knew that I was only willing to work with you if I didn’t have to do any decryption, why the fuck—,”
“M’sorry.” Every word he said seemed wrong and the words he thought seemed even worse. Fumes practically burst out of Kamara’s ears as she began pacing in front of Simon, who stayed in one place, his eyes following her. He took his mask off before he entered the room, so his face told Kamara all she needed to know. He was wrong, and he knew it. She laughed hysterically, almost frightening her husband. “You’re sorry? That’s it? You lied to me. I trusted you!” Her voice gradually got louder, her now directly in front of Simon.
“And you can still trust me. I swear, but we need you, Mar, please,” he pleaded, reaching out to his wife, who ducked away from his touch. “You know I don’t code anymore. I translate and decipher whatever text and language that is given to me. That’s it.” Her voice was lower, possibly her realizing that she had begun to yell at someone she loved, or it was her going over conversations she had with her daughter about only yelling in reasonable situations. This was very reasonable.
“Code is a language…technically.” It was not the time nor place for any humor, but Simon hoped that it could at least ease some of the tension, but he knew those efforts were no good once his wife’s glare nearly killed him.
“Alright, okay. Listen, the truth is… we’ve gone through dozens of programmers and cyber operators. None of them have been able to break through the crypt, and we need to know what’s on it.” He was forcing his voice to not crack. Simon was not an easy man to break, but love opens up emotions that he didn’t know he had, that he had to be reminded of. “If so many other qualified people failed, what the hell makes you think I can do it? I couldn’t do it before and I can’t do it now. In fact, the last time I tried, I got our team killed, or did you forget that?” The tears in her eyes were evident, but she fixed her gaze on the dimmed light above them, ridding her eyes of the puddles that threatened to spill.
Finally, he heard her say it, even though it’s not like he didn’t know. She was still blaming herself. He couldn’t expect her to forgive her actions within the matter of a few days, but he hoped his affirmations would last longer, but it seemed like Kamara’s self-blame got worse by the day. “I could never forget. In fact, I remember all of it, including the fact that it wasn’t your fault.”
“My code got our location leaked, the names of families with it. Our team died because I made an error during a time when perfection was needed. Everyone was relying on me because I was the one who did everything perfectly, and the one time it mattered, I couldn’t do it. I failed. It was my fault.” Her voice cracked more as she spoke, the light no longer able to take away the pain that flooded her face with tears. The day would forever haunt her, not only because her team died, but because she was supposed to take the lead and her leadership led her team to Death’s door, and he answered.
Simon didn’t know what else to do. What more forgiveness can you give to someone who can’t forgive themselves? However, he wouldn’t let his own doubts stop him from trying. He had come so far to heal from the atrocities he had endured in Mexico, just to be setback when he was imprisoned again, though the torture he endured was different. He may not have physical scars to prove his time spent in hell, but he had the constant playback in his head every time he saw Kamara.
“Mar, there’s nothing to prove that.”
“And there’s also nothing to prove that it wasn’t my fault. So I’d rather feel and know what I’ve done than-,” she lost her balance, catching herself on her back foot, her tears now gliding down her face, “than go around telling myself I didn’t do it just to make my life worth living.”
“That’s not fair to yourself.”
“You wanna know what’s not fair? The fact that our team is dead. They had families. Children. People who loved them. It should have been me. I didn’t have anyone waiting for me to come home. I didn’t have kids. No parents, no family—,”
“And neither did I. You sayin’ I should’ve died back then, too?” The question stopped Kamara in her tracks, the first time since the beginning of their argument that she had to think about what she said. It felt like every answer she came up with sat heavier on her heart. To tell the truth would mean she had to admit it to herself and to lie would mean she would do the one thing she told herself she wouldn’t do.
“Yes.” No matter how many times she wiped her tears, even more replaced them.
“You don’t mean that.” He knew she meant it. It was more to convince himself that she didn’t. One thing he knew about his wife was that she didn’t lie, only when needed. Their relationship was supposed to be built on truth, something he broke. “Yes, Simon, I do. Because if you died, no one was waiting for you. They would have killed me, too, so I didn’t matter. There was no one waiting for us back home.” Her words were piercing through him just like her eyes, no matter how glassy they were. He couldn’t be mad at her for telling the truth, but he couldn’t deny the anger that his wife’s words brought him. Kamara could practically see Simon’s blood boiling–this time she lost the staring contest–the silence filling the room, and now she was on the other side of the fence.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.” The immediate regret was overpowering her anger, her body no longer tense with frustration, but with the worries of what Simon would say next. Whether she would prefer for him to be giving her the death stare with or without the mask, she couldn't tell, because both options seemed just as terrifying. Simon wasn’t one to hit her or yell at her. Sometimes, his glare was all she needed to know to back down. She waited for her husband to say something, if he said anything. The silence felt like knives cutting through her soul. “Please…Simon…say something..” Anything.
She tugged on his arm, but all he could do was glare at her, and when he felt she had enough, he turned his gaze ahead of him. “Will you be able to do the encryption or not?” His voice was firm, unshaken, closer to the voice he used on the field rather than with his wife. “Simon, don’t do that. Please.” He was shutting down. Shutting her out. If there was anything she hated more than Simon lying to her–which he seldomly did and if he did, it was playfully–it was when he shut her out, his emotions too overwhelming for him to express.
“Then what do you want me to do, Kamara?”
“Talk to me…that’s all…tell me why you lied. Why is this mission so important to you? Why can’t you just…let it go?” Her tone was soft, much softer than when the argument first began.
“‘Cause…”
“Because what? Simon, just tell me! I am begging you!” It was rare that Kamara ever pleaded. She had never even begged for her own life, let alone beg for Simon to tell her something, at least not in this type of circumstance.
“I can’t, love.” His voice returned to the one she knew so well, soft but obviously still filled with some anger. Kamara could feel her body tense up again, her fists clenching and her breaths becoming more shallow. In the past, Kamara had a reputation for throwing objects and knocking over the first thing she saw whenever she was angry, which was another reason she would be written up. Her relationship with Simon had allowed her to be more aware of her actions, containing her urge to become more reckless than her words.
“Why not?” He hadn’t answered. She took a deep breath, her anger nearly overwhelming her. “Simon, you are gone for weeks, mostly months at a time. We have had Ellie for three, nearly four years and you have seen her half of that time–,”
“Mar–,”
“She is our kid and she looks up to you. She wants to save people, too, just like her father, but you have to be there to teach her that family comes first. You are not representing the one thing we have tried to teach her!” Kamara's yells filled the empty halls, even though none of her words could be made out as they echoed.
“M’sorry.” It felt like she was going in circles, unable to get anywhere with the man. Usually, he’d have faltered by now. By this point, she didn’t care about the code or the drive. She wanted her family back, but she was getting tired of fighting.
“Alright, then. But you all don’t need me. Y’all are perfectly capable of finding other resources.” She forced a grin on her face, despite the tears that stained it, her eyes no longer teary but turned doe. “Come on, I don’t have to go back to Joel’s by myself tonight. You can come with me. I’m sure Price would understand.” His arm stayed sturdy as she gently pulled on it in an effort to get the stoic man to do something, anything, other than stand and constantly apologize.
“I can’t do that, love.” Her face immediately dropped, her eyebrows furrowing and her lips turning downward. Simon stumbled backward after Kamara shoved him, her touch on his touch ruminating for a few seconds before leaving. “Why not? Why the hell not? What is it? Are we not enough for you? Is that what it is?” Her voice was louder than it had ever been, Simon certain his team could hear, but he didn’t want to tell her to keep it down or to calm down. She had a right to be angry with him and he knew that.
“You two are everything to me. You both are my world. I wouldn’t be here without you or Ellie.”
“Then what is it? Is it your father? Because you’re not like him,” she began, going on to list the many reasons she believed Simon was not like the drunk. While it was relieving to hear, she still was missing the point.
“That's not it.”
“Then what the hell is it, damnit? Why is this case so goddamn important to you that you can’t come home to your family?”
“‘Cause of what he did to you!” Kamara was stunned, taking a step back from the first time Simon had truly yelled at her. Her eyebrows crinkled and her eyes searched the room, hoping to find an answer to what the hell he was talking about. They were both trapped together in that cell. However, her memories briefly started to come in, and she realized the guilt the man had held onto for all these years.
She forced a smile that didn't reach her eyes, hoping it’ll be enough for the man, “Simon, I’m fine…I’ve moved past it.”
“No, you haven’t, and you know full well you haven’t. Don’t try to lie to me–,” an ironic thing to say, he knew. “ You avoid the mirror like it’s the bloody plague. Loud noises still make you jump. You still flinch when I try to touch you. For God’s sake, hearing the shower run still gives you a panic attack. You’re not fine.” Kamara’s eyes brimmed with unshed tears and her shoulders drooped with a weight that seemed impossible to carry. “Look… I’m okay. It was only a few months and I hardly remember most of it. I have been through years of worse.”
“Did that worse include being drugged and sold, too?” No. Despite what she told him about the Red Room, he knew just as well as she did that those few months were insufferable, making the Red Room seem like a playground. The only thing her imprisonment and the Red Room had in common was that she constantly received reminders that her body was not her own. “It wasn’t that bad…the drugs made me forget most of it…besides, some of them were quite nice.”
Clenching his jaw and rolling his eyes at the woman, who could feel her husband’s burning stare beaming down on her, almost embarrassed that she made the irreverent comment. She was only trying to lessen his pain; humor was always how they pushed past their traumas, but the time for it was miscalculated.
The quietness was eerie, so Kamara decided to continue to attempt to ease his burdens. “How many times do I have to say it? I am fine. I’m sorry that you understand the things I went through. I wish you didn’t, but I can promise you, I’m alright. I don’t even think about it even more.” She was lying through her teeth and she knew it, but it was a needed lie she had to tell her husband and herself.
Simon’s silence was always scary, especially when Kamara couldn’t tell what he was thinking. It was obvious he was hurting. He was worried for her. And above all, he yearned for her past self, not only because he missed her contagious laugh and how she used to walk with her head high, but because he knew her past self would be disappointed in her present self. Before, she found every reason to smile no matter her circumstance–something he loved about her–and now, it seemed like she prohibited her freedom to smile as if she needed permission to do so.
“You wanna know the worst part about it?” The grave man had finally chosen to speak, ridding Kamara of any jests she had left, leaving her tongue-tied.
“I couldn’t do anything other than watch them strip you down and drag you away,” he began, Kamara’s eyes immediately becoming glassy and her vision blurry. “I could hear your screams until your voice went hoarse. I could hear them whip you. Beat you. Rape you.”
Any words that Kamara thought she could muster up had disappeared, her brain unable to come up with any response that could relieve the trauma her love had gone through, but there was nothing she could say. The only thing she could do was accompany him in his pain, making sure he wasn’t alone in it, filling the space he thought would forever be empty.
“You dun’t remember, but I do, ‘cause they made me watch. It didn’t matter how much I closed my eyes, ‘cause I could still hear everything…and there was nothing I could do about it.” The days were blurry to her, constantly high on whatever the drug was for the week, her body never gaining tolerance for any of them. The pools in her eyes overflowed, but she tried to wipe away the streaks quickly painting her face.
“They might not have dragged a knife across my skin or beat me half to death, but they knew that just hearing and watching you was torture enough. Even when we finally made it out, it was like you weren’t really there. I thought the detox would kill you, but it didn’t, and that’s when I thought there was still a sliver of fight left in you.” What came next was what really broke her. This was the first time Simon had expressed any grievance for the situation, having never spoken about what had occurred three years prior.
“But then I found you—your wrists slit, bleeding out in the cabin, eyes completely dark, the light gone until we found Ellie. Even then, it’s not nearly what it used to be. I’m reminded of what happened every time I see that scar on your face and every time I try to hold your hand.”
There was nothing more that she felt she could do. What happened…happened. It was over and she wanted it to all be behind them. “None of that was your fault,” it seemed like they were battling who to blame even though the answer was clear, “I’m deeply sorry you had to endure that pain. I didn’t know that. Things like that don’t bring a spark to anyone unless they’re insane.” She thought she had avoided Simon being tortured, but there were factors she obviously didn’t consider, but she tried, and there was nothing she could do about it now other than be grateful he’s alive. “And sure, maybe I’m not as…joyful or happy as I used to be, but at least I am trying. I am here,” her voice shaking and her volume gradually increasing as she spoke, her rage coming over her again. “I make sure I am here for you! I make sure I am here for Ellie! And guess who is here for me? No one!” It wasn’t fair to Simon, having to keep everything bottled up, but it also wasn’t fair that the one person Kamara wanted–hell, needed–was choosing to not be by her side because she wasn’t the same.
“Mar—,”
“You’re supposed to be the one who is here for me, just like I will and have always been there for you! But now, I know you can hardly stand to look at me so it makes more sense.” It didn’t help that she could hardly look at herself because she was also reminded not of what they did to her, but what they took from her.
“That’s not what I said,” he calmly said. The wavering guilt fell upon Simon, knowing Kamara couldn’t be responsible for the burdens he did not communicate; she thought she had prevented him of that burden years ago, but not all burdens can be physically carried.
“Basically, what you said.” She had lowered her voice, it was still quivering but more controlled. “Don’t be like that.”
“Like what? What am I being like? What do you want me to be like? Why am I not enough?” It was obvious Kamara was officially breaking, not upset that she was lied to, but because she believed a part of her died in that cell, just to be left with the parts bearing untold secrets. Simon didn’t know how to answer the questions and, quite frankly, he didn’t know if he was supposed to, so he answered it the best way he could.
He cupped her face that was covered in tears, which he gracefully stroked away with his rough thumbs, “I shouldn’t have said that. I’m sorry. You are more than enough. Everything you’re doing is enough. You’re amazing.” He allowed Kamara to fall into his arms, her steady flow of tears staining his chest. “It was selfish of me to say that. I love you no matter who you are and what you do. I will always love you and I will always be by your side no matter the circumstances. I swear to you.”
“So then come home…please…” Her tears seemingly ceased. All she wanted was for Simon to be by her side and not have to spend each moment with him wondering if it would be her last.
“I will,” he replied, feeling Kamara’s chest stop and her breath hitching,“after this mission.” The last tear that Kamara hoped wouldn’t fall made its way to Simon’s shirt, her heart shattering just like it did every time Simon left her.
“I hate you,” she whispered. Simon’s hand found its way to the back of the whimpering woman’s head. “I know,” he said. He knew his wife didn’t mean it, but it pained him knowing that she loved him so much that she hated him for it, and his love was just as strong. Love was the reason he hadn’t resigned, because when he went home, it meant that he was forced to face the fact that he was an option. That someone chose to love him and wait for him, and that scared him the most, but he could no longer let his fear hurt the person who loved him, no matter his past.
“But I promise you, after this mission, I’m done. I’ll come home. I won’t miss a single night next to you. I’ll cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I’ll tuck Ellie in every night. I’ll even help her with the stupid homework you give her–,” Usually, Simon’s promises of coming home fell through, making the rest of his promises seem like just another set of words, but none of them had ever sounded as earnest as the one he was now making, filling a void in Kamara’s chest that none of his other pledges ever did.

ok so basicalyyyy
(included voiceclaims too bc its fun)
S1 involves crypt (vc david bowie) and ophelia (vc undecided atm) - ophelias arc is really quick bc i need s1 to focus more on the main villains i think. anyway the protags get lost in the woods for some reason and ophelia offers to lead them back to town but actually shes luring them deeper into the forest to her cabin so she can murder them and feed them to crypt. crypt Was her pet when she 1st found them after her parents died, but as they both grew up it turns out theyre actually fully intelligent. they make her kill people to keep them fed along with verbally and mentally abusing her and sometimes they get physically abusive too, and they often threaten to kill her if she doesnt feed them. obviously living with this for years affects her sanity, she ends up enjoying mutilating ppl as a kind of way to survive and eventually becomes more of a sadist. so anyway its obvious from the moment the protags meet her that Somethings not right just based on how erratically she acts, and they kinda sus her out pretty quick. she panics and attacks them but fails to kill them, which crypt is angry about and forces her off to the side to kill them themself. crypt dies obviously, idk how yet, maybe lenarr does it with his powers idfk. obviously ophelia is Devastated, but also relieved secretly. it takes her awhile to get over crypts death but after she does she thanks the protags and fucks off to live in her cabin peacefully lol
S2 involves noodle (vc dana snyder) and grem (vc 2mello), who is actually one of the main villains but hes important here i prommy - SO THIS ONES A BIGGER ONE bc i have room to do so now that the plot and characters are mostly Established. so a bit of backstory required on this one since noodle is a pre-established side character. noodle has been working at the royal familys castle since he was around 15, a lot like most of the other castle staff. unfortunately hes the one whos given the most odd/shitty jobs just by sheer coincidence, but hes convinced its because tix hates him for some reason. this isnt exactly helped by tixs spoiled rich kid personality he had when he was younger and just his general shittiness as a person (intentional or otherwise), and also indie (being tixs advisor and technically noodles 2nd boss despite being younger than him) is naturally bossy and blunt which made it worse too. so noodle is Already fed up with tix constantly antagonizing him (indie he doesnt actually care about as much because hes close friends with her boyfriend), that combined with how absolutely Nothing his personal life is, he just kinda Has it one day and decides hes going to do something awful to tix. so for context, grem is tixs ex, noodle knows he exists but doesnt actually Know him. he steals tixs old demonomicon from when they were still together and summons grem using his own blood. grem would Never miss an opportunity to torment tix at this point in the show bc he Also hates him. grem offers noodle a contract and he accepts without reading too much into it. grem basically implants a living embodiment of pure demon magic into noodles open wound (thats how he gets his snake tattoo btw) and it gives him magical powers Permanently. since noodle is my boyfailure hes very bad at using them but eventually Does get the hang of it, and plans to destroy tixs home and anyone that tries to stop him from doing so. NOW. ANOTHER bit of context. noodle was tixs go to babysitter for tiabi (tixs daughter) and noodle genuinely likes and cares for her very much. that being said, tiabi basically has to console this grown ass man whos having a major power trip rn bc shes the only one he wouldnt Ever harm in any way. this is undecided but im thinking maybe grem gets frustrated and maybe posesses noodle or something similar. hence noodles redemption episode being titled "exorcism" but idrk
S3 involves eugene (vc weird al) - so after the events of s2 i figured itd be good to have a silly, only semi-serious villain lol. this one was fairly recently given a MAJORRRR revision, eugene is my bffs (@/killer12345blog) oc that he made as a joke but i got attached to him lol. anyway eugene is a master shapeshifter that takes on a bastardization of tixs form to frame him for a wide variety of terrible crimes in ordsr to ruin his reputation. the reason he does this is to get tix out of the pucture so he can replace him and take over his life. he was successful in "replacing" other ppl in the past so this time he goes for tix, who is technically a very important political figure (hes a prince). while most of eugenes more sinister stuff goes on behind the scenes without it being revealed that he was the one doing it the Whole time, he pretends to be an ally to the main protags, hes actually naturally charming and his personality makes him very likeable. what hes ACTUALLY doing is cozying up to tixs friends to try to make them prefer him while furthing the evidence that tix is responsible for all eugenes crimes he did. its actually presented in a way that makes the person watching Also suspect tix. so eventually zach and lenarr realize theres some differences in how eugenetix acts vs how tix Actually acts, and start to believe it wasnt actually tix doing it. eugene gets mad as hell and goes mask off villain mode when lenarr and zach dont choose him over tix, and by that point its obvious what eugene was doing the entire time. so he attacks the protags, and since hes using tixs species as a base for the forms hes taking atm that means they cant kill him as easily bc he would only be killed by the same things that can hurt tix. This part i havent Fully gotten to just yet but they do come up with a convoluted home alone ass plan to lure eugene into a trap and kill him to DEATH (me and art agreed. even tho eugene actually dies for real im still using him as a bg character bc itd be funny)
S4 involves moff (vc uhhh. idk. who tf voices spinel from su) SO THIS ONES GONNA BE SHORT. its underdeveloped and s4 has a Lot of important shit happening w the main characters so itll be hard to fit in. a lot like s1 lol. anyway moff is an aspiring writer and is heavily invested in fandom culture and stuff lol. hes unhappy with how the writing of the show is done and wants to change it (dumb as fuck 4th wall break i know but who gaf) obviously this freaks the other characters the fuck out and they think hes crazy. BUT moff is the proud owner of a magic journal or something that he can write something in and it happens. this ones more lighthearted too, he doesnt do anything toooo awful with it its just weird and the other characters hate it so they try to stop him. this is very very hard bc of moffs journal, but they Are successful and his journal gets set on fire to get rid of it forever lol

GrojBand Comeback Tour - Kin Kujira
Support me over at Patreon: www.patreon.com/skulljackxiii
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: When looking back at the show and remembering what Kin was like, he didn't feel that much different than his brother, but I guess that was part of why they got along so well. Anyways I thought that in this version, he plays more in his role as a genius, where he's more dedicated and prideful towards his intellect. Of course I'm still keeping him as a weird and hyper personal so that he easily goes along Corey's and his brother's antics, but he flips a switch when it comes to his projects. Let's say that something goes wrong with one of his inventions or if something offends his knowledge, he would be go on a tirade and start cursing left and right when he's alone, though comedically he would immediately calm down in front of his friends as if nothing happened. He never directly goes off or shown to have any kind of hostility towards anyone, but there is only one exception, Kim. Whenever Kin sees Kim, they both can't help themselves but get hostile and have this kind of pissing contest against one another to see who was more smart. Kin doesn't exactly know why he's so honest when it comes to Kim or how she gets on his nerves so quickly and the same could be said about her as well, the only one that seems to get a clue is Konnie.)
Role: Kin is one of the key members of Grojband, taking the many vital roles as the band's keyboardist, audio technician, and remixer; many of the final music productions is almost entirely relied on him. Along side that, with his knowledge of science and machines, he's also relied as the band's auto-mechanic for the maintenance and repairs for their tour bus.
Bio: Kin lived in Japan most of his life with her brother Kon and the rest of the Kujira Family, along with another named the Kagami Family. Parents of both families were inseparable friends who spent many years together, thus he and his brother grew up knowing the children of the other family, Kim and Konnie. Kin was fond with Konnie and treated her like family, but for he couldn't quite get along with Kim. Whenever he saw her, he would start to flare up and butt heads with her over every little thing, especially when it came to academics. This is because unlike Kim, Kin was not born as a prodigy, in fact he did quite poorly in school to a point where at times even his brother would have better grades than him. It bothers him at times, especially when he compares himself to a natural born genius like Kim, but that didn't discourage him from improving his mind. Kin has always prided himself with learning and especially towards things he didn't know or quite understood.
For years, he constantly studied, analyzed, and improved all his effort in order to surpass Kim and show that his hard work could overtake her natural born talent; though she didn't make it easy and would gloat whenever she came out on top. As this continued, Kin would only grow from all his failures until one day he finally did it and beat Kim in a subject, that being music. His hard work paid off and since then both him and her would go back and forth trying to out due the other in all kinds of fields. Despite whatever awards or recognition either one gained from their rivalry, they didn't pay heed as they solely focused on one thing, each other.
One day, his parents were informed to be transferred overseas for work, so the Kujira Family, along with the Kagami Family, moved to America. With his weird personality, it didn't take long for Kin to get along with people in his first couple of days. He was quite the busybody as so many people tried to get him into so many after school clubs and communities due to his dedication and intelligence. But the one that finally got him was actually a band from his brother's classmate, Corey Riffin. Kon wanted them to play music together since Kin already accumulated many music awards from being a ceremonial pianist and a composer. He was hesitant at first, but after hearing Kon out some more and finally meeting Corey, he was more than willing to join up. After meeting Corey in person and hearing his dreams, his words resonated with Kin and made him really want to see what he'll do next.

was he also too suicidal to recognize that buck had come along way from where he was in season 1? was he also not in his right mind when he told hen "you got this" to her ease anxieties over adopting mara? or when he told her that all she had to do was welcome mara into her family when she was worried about mara never having felt a part of a family? or when he noticed ravi didn't need help with the hoses anymore? or when he told buck that he was on his game that night or letting him cook for the team, or telling him the food was good?
that argument doesn't make any sense unless you're also saying that nothing bobby says in that episode counts or matters? the point of that scene was to show these characters have grown through the under bobby. the point of the bobby and buck scene was bobby telling buck that he'd come along way and doesn't constantly need guidance anymore, which is true. also chimney, hen, eddie, and chris all love tommy. chim literally said "tommy is so cool." eddie literally said "i like him too." chris was gushing about how awesome tommy was off screen. bobby also openly liked tommy alongside hen and chim when he first met them in bobby begins, when hen, chim, and tommy were all getting drinks together. genuinely curious if you actually watch the show you're talking about or have you fallen victim to your own echo chamber? it's fine not to like a character, but it's very clear the show is trying to tell the audience that tommy is a good guy. like no amount of "b-b-but" is gonna change that. even if they do break up, he's never gonna be the villain you're creating in your head. all of the mains clearly approve of tommy, you just don't wanna hear it.
I’m not going to spend my night arguing with an anon. But I will say that the show does a pretty good job of showing how Tommy was not a good guy in the past. I’m not going to forgive a misogynistic racist.
Go rewatch the episode in season 3 where Buck befriends the retired firefighter who is all alone. When Buck asks Hen and Chim about their relationships with past members of the 118, they both admit that they aren’t friends with those guys, including Tommy. Chim straight up says he only called Tommy for help that one time because Tommy owed him a favor. That’s all. That’s the only reason they’d had any contact.
For the cruise ship episode, Hen wasn’t even trying to reach Tommy. She wasn’t even thinking of him.
But you know what the most important thing I’m going to say is? It’s that the best thing about consuming media is that we can all have different opinions and interpretations. We can all like different aspects of the same show, derive enjoyment and pleasure from it, and still never agree with each other.
Just like I’m never going to convince you that Tommy isn’t a good guy, you’re never going to convince me that he is.
So have a great night, enjoy your weekend, and let’s please agree to go to our separate corners of fandom in peace. You can also feel free to block me if you don’t like my opinion. It’s another great option to protect your own peace.

Let's Talk About Shinsou
*Note: Lmao, do I tag this as Anti Shinsou or Pro Shinsou??*
Despite being a pretty popular character overall, Shinsou seems to be under a lot of scrutiny with my fellow Bakugou antis. And I understand why. Our first introduction to him isn't a pleasant one; he's first shown taunting Class 1A about being attacked by villains (a generally traumatic experience) out of jealousy. It's also been noted that Aizawa spends more time training him than his actual class (though, this is more of an issue with Aizawa than Shinsou). Personality wise, he (subjectively) isn't pleasant or very entertaining either.
I'm impartial to him myself as I don't love him or hate him. He's just... there really (a fate many characters suffer). But you know what I think of when I think about Shinsou's character? Wasted potential.
My Hero Academia is constantly tossing the term rival around the show. There's the rivalry between Izuku, Bakugou, and Todoroki which is why they became the main trio (don't @ me for this I'm speaking technicalities here). There's also the infamous (one-sided) rivalry between All Might and Endeavor, a driving force behind not only Endeavor's actions against his family but a large part of the overall plot of the show.
When I first watched the Sports Festival and Izuku's match with Shinsou, I was positive they were setting them up to be rivals.
No, I don't mean the "rivalry" Izuku has with Bakugou (Bakugou stans don't @ me). I don't mean the friendly rivalries he has with Todoroki or Iida either.
I mean a straight-up rivalry. Where they don't become friends. Where they don't get along with or like one another (maybe a grudging respect at the most). I was sure Shinsou was going to be someone to constantly challenge Izuku; not only on a physical level, but ideologically too.
The Sports Festival partially set this up by calling attention to the similarities between Izuku's past and Shinsou's. While Izuku was discriminated against for his lack of quirk, Shinsou was treated differently and outcast because he had a "villainous" quirk. But they take on two different attitudes. Shinsou is bitter and full of contempt while Izuku was optimistic and determined to help a world full of people who shunned him. The show was deliberately setting up parallels between them.
But this dynamic is almost non-existent. Whatever interaction they do get is towards the end of the manga (Shinsou was introduced in the Sports Festival, an extremely early part of the series and in the show he's non-existent until season 5). And there's none of the previous complexity there was before.
Even if Shinsou was unlikable overall, it might have been worth it for him to be Izuku's real rival. His opposite not only in personality and attitude, but also heroics. Izuku can rely on his strength and the powers OF A give him, Shinsou would have to rely on his skills and brain. Their quirks are somewhat opposite to one another (at least in how they use them). Seeing them have to work together even though they'd usually approach things differently would have been way better than what we usually get.
I think that dynamic would have been a lot more interesting to watch than the trio or whatever you can Izuku and Bakugou (I will not refer to them as the Wonder Duo because wtf is that).
What do my fellow antis think? Would Shinsou have been a good rival if written well enough? Is there anyone else you would have preferred? Personally, I'd take anything over Izuku and Bakugou.
*Note: While we're on this topic, I think Monoma could have been Bakugou's rival. Someone who's calm and collected to contrast Bakugou's temper and whose quirk can easily rival his. I would have preferred that over subjecting Izuku to abuse under the guise of rivalry. I really wish Horikoshi would have kept them separate and allowed them to grow as heroes on their own without their toxic, codependent relationship. Maybe I would have tolerated Bakugou more. Monoma also isn't bothered by Bakugou so he wouldn't have had to go through the same thing Izuku did*

Can I request the dorm leader with a gender-neutral Reader, who can take away anybody's unique magic and turn those unique magic into stone? The reader can use the stones with no limit
Huh, I think what you're saying is that the user takes the abilities, turns them into small stones, and then carries it around to use later on? I wrote it with that kind of idea, hope this is at least a good read!
Dorm leaders with a gn!reader with the ability to steal unique magic
Riddle
He doesn't really mind that you can do this, as long as it's not used for evil he won't care about it
Ace and Deuce might ask for you to do something about Riddle's unique magic but Riddle told you that if you dared he would find a way to get it back (and he said he would succeed)
I feel like there would be a limit to this ability, mainly fatigue or overblot. Riddle doesn't want you to do that so he'll ask that you limit the use of your ability
Speaking of limits, he's amazed that you can learn another's unique ability and use it to its potential. It shows that you're a strong magic user
Leona
Leona likes his ability but at the same time despises it. The fact that you're so proud of yours makes him admire you
He does this it's a bit scary you can just take someone's powers and use it for your own, even learning to master it. If anything, it tells him that you're skilled
Similar to Riddle, he would rather not see you overblot and will ask you to not go overboard with your abilities. Feel free to show him how your magic works though, he would like to see one time!
Who knows, if unique magic was allowed in certain Magical Shift games he would want you on his team haha
Azul
You two have similar powers in the sense that it involves another party. Who knows, you two could start a business together!
Will want to learn how you came up with your ability along with its other intricacies. He likes learning about new skills and magic so you'll have to prepare for a lot of questions from him
He won't want to see you overwork yourself with your unique magic. Because of this, expect him to bring you snacks now and then when you look tired haha
If you two actually made a business together with you helping with his contracts, that would actually be terrifying haha
Kalim
He thinks you're super cool. How are you able to control so many magic skills? He knows only one and even then it's not like it's super easy to master a magic ability
He respects you a lot but doesn't want you to overwork yourself. Will constantly check in on you and be just your #1 supporter
Plz don't steal his ability ;-; like even if it's out of curiosity since Jamil will fight you haha
Overall I feel like he would like you for your personality more than anything else but he does admire your skills in magic
Vil
How terrifying is your unique magic? However, Vil thinks it's really cool, perhaps poetic in a way? Nonetheless he applauds you for your mastery in magic
Asks what you do with the magic abilities you collect. Do you use a different one every day for the fun of it? Do you take away abilities from people that seem undeserving in your opinion? He's curious to how you came up with your ability in general
I feel like he likes you for who you are more than anything else though, so while he does think your ability is cool he likes you for you
Won't check in on you a lot until you start showing signs of fatigue. He can't let his s/o get dark circles, stress, etc! Will take you on self-care dates
Idia
So here's the thing: he's part of Olympus, right? So he was afraid at first that you would resent him for his family's business. However, the two of you got close and put past issues aside
He thinks your ability is super cool. It's like being able to unlock new skills in a game, except you can use them to their full potential!
Idia will want you to relax when you can in case your ability is stress-inducing. Expect to learn new video games with him or watch a new anime!
He really thinks you're special for who you are and for your skills in magic. Just take care of yourself too!
Malleus
You two are probably the strongest students in the entire school haha. It's like a power couple!
He thinks your abilities are interesting, very powerful but he wonders how it came to be. He's a very curious person, so he'll have a lot of questions haha
You two probably spend time walking in the woods near the school and talking as well. It's chill and a nice way to get close!
I feel like he fell for you because of your personality more than anything however. Sure he thinks your ability is very unique, but that's just another reason to admire you

So how's about fatal error sonic with a computer virus reader who gained sentience
Fatal Error Sonic with a Computer Virus!Reader who has gained sentience
Hey there thanks for the ask
This is the final ask that I’ve received for now. I’m still going to have my inbox closed for now just to calm down a bit and plus I’m getting ready to go away somewhere for my birthday tomorrow and given that my birthday is 6 days away I would prefer to use that time to hang out with family. Hope you guys understand. ~Blaze/Dawn

———————————
- How did you even come to this point? One minute it was nothing then all of a sudden you noticed everything that was going around you. You didn’t even realise what was going on when you started to have a feeling that you were being watched by someone. You started to question who you were and why you were here. Everything was happening too fast you just wanted to know what was happening to you. Eventually, after some digging into what is happening you realised what your name was and what your sole purpose was. You were a computer virus and your sole purpose was to extract code, exploit systems and gather anything you can about the person who was unfortunate to fall for your virus.
- At first you went along with it one because you were practically made by your creator to do that and plus it was actually kind of funny to think of your victims reaction when they realised all the stuff they’ve been gaining was gone in practically in a second. Yes it may make you sound sadistic but it was actually kind of funny. Although, the only thing that annoyed you about doing this was your creator constantly telling you which people to get, not letting you do your own thing which you didn’t like. Why couldn’t you do what you want ? Nobody was incharge of you. One day after spending most of the time constantly going to different people grabbing some of their information you decided ‘you know what? Screw it!’ and decided to leave your creator without a trace.
- Honestly at first it felt weird not having someone tell you what to do you weren’t sure if you’ve done the right thing but it was a bit too late to do anything now and plus now you can have the freedom to do what you wanted to do and not be restricted. You had the freedom to travel to whatever computer place you want and do whatever you want to it. That’s how you met a similar being to you named fatal error. You were doing your regular stuff hopping from one person's computer to another when just so happened to arrive in a habitat that fatal error obtained.
- When he first met you he was surprised to see someone similar to him. He couldn’t help but be curious about you. Can you really blame him? He never thought he would meet someone similar to him. Obviously he was sceptical of you and your intentions at first asking you questions about why you were here but overall was slightly happy to see you and maybe considered becoming friends with you.
- I can imagine him being slightly attached to you. Not in a loving way but more of a protective kind of way if you know what I mean. He never thought that he would find or meet someone similar to him he’s been dealing with he went through it has never crossed his mind that someone else had went through the same thing as he did. That’s how you two bonded with each other, when he went to visit you or the other way around he may find stuff you two can do together just so he could be with you.

PW2024 - Day 4 - Enemies to Lovers - The Broken Sort
@prongsfootweekarchive
When Dumbledore decides to flip it so the sorting is reverse ABCs, and eleven-year-old James Potter opts for Slytherin so he'll be with Sirius Black (his destined BFF), things don't go to plan and instead a rivarly is born.
AO3
***
James Potter was an enigma to almost everyone in Slytherin House, but that’s mainly because he appeared to be everything opposite of what most Slytherins pride themselves on and no one could figure out how he ended up in their house.
Especially since Snape had spread the word about James’ disparaging comments about Slytherin on the train before the sorting.
The truth is that he’d met a boy on the train, one that he believed would be his best friend and one, who believed that he would end up in Slytherin since his entire family was in Slytherin. James had always been ambitious enough for his future, and cunning when it comes to planning surprises for people, so when McGonagall announced Dumbledore’s grand plan to start with the end of the alphabet first, James figured he had to go to Slytherin.
That way he could be with his new best mate, Sirius Black.
Only eleven-year-old James Potter’s dreams were for naught because when Sirius Black was sorted, he went to Gryffindor… and James was persona-non-grata in Slytherin due to Snape claiming he ‘hates’ Slytherins.
So, he’d tried to be friends with him anyway, but the other Slytherins and even the Gryffindors set out to separate them. It was as if neither of them could ever reach out with getting targeted and after a few weeks, Sirius had loudly proclaimed that he didn’t want to be friends with slimy Slytherins when confronted by a pair of his roommates and well… James changed his tactics.
Just because Sirius wouldn’t give him a chance over his house doesn’t mean he’s done with James, not if James had anything to do with it.
So, he spent the better part of the last five years doing everything he could to get his attention. To punish him for refusing to be James’ friend. Every prank he planned (on his own and sometimes with the only roommate he liked, Charlie Wood) was targeted at Sirius and his ‘crew’, which sometimes included all of his roommates, but mainly hit him and Kingsley Shacklebolt, the boy who had taken James’ rightful spot as Sirius’ best mate. He deliberately became one of the best chasers and leaders on the Slytherin quidditch team (becoming captain in fourth year) when Sirius got a spot as one of their three chasers in second year, becoming Captain in fourth year. James constantly went back and forth in the rankings with Sirius, each trying to determine they could be the best in the year across the board, and when fifth year came, they both became Prefects.
They were the ultimate enemies and rivals. Trying to one up one another and prove they are the best.
No one has won, yet.
The Prefect thing was a surprise to everyone because they’d both gotten in more trouble than typical prefects over their constantly pranking one another and landing in detention. Their detentions were never together, but James knew they were both nearly breaking the detention records there, too.
Yet, somehow, they were chosen.
They managed fifth year without losing their badges and not getting paired up together, but this year, they haven’t gotten so lucky.
The first schedule came out and they were partnered together for every shift that they have.
“Woah, wait a second,” Sirius says, looking at the schedule. “Have you two gone mental?”
The Head Girl, a Slytherin, Marlene McKinnon smiles at them. “I can assure you that Frank and I have thought this through. We want to help our houses to actually be in the running for the House Cup this year, but despite your quidditch wins and points won by answering questions, you’ve both caused our houses to be out of the running by constantly pranking one another.”
“So, we thought that you could learn to get along and stop all of your pranking of one another and Gryffindor might actually have a chance,” Frank Longbottom, the Gryffindor Head Boy, says.
“Obviously, if Potter can keep to himself, Slytherin will win, but the point stands,” McKinnon states. “We want a chance this year, as it’s our last year and we think that the two of you can learn to get along if you just spend some time together.”
“And there’s no chance of you changing your mind?” Sirius asks, nearly pleading.
James grumbles at the tone. Why does Sirius hate him so much? It’s not like he was the one that insulted Sirius. He wanted to be his best mate, but Sirius hated on him the moment he went to Slytherin (or at least it seemed that way after James overheard the slimy Slytherin comment).
“Not a chance, Black,” Longbottom states. “We’ve made our decisions, and this is what’s happening.”
“Fine. Meet me in the Entrance Hall ten minutes before the shift and don’t be late,” Sirius states before turning on his heel and walking away.
It makes James furious at Sirius ordering him around, but it’s not like he has much of a choice, and he’ll just have to deal with that.
Maybe this will be a way to get his attention without detention.
***
The first month of the schedule with Sirius was passed with James attempting to make small talk and Sirius giving no answer or one-word answers.
It’s terrible.
James doesn’t like this situation.
Despite the terrible way that Sirius has treated him for just being a Slytherin, there’s a part of James that still wants to be his friend. He feels like there’s some sort of … like he ruined something great by going to Slytherin, even if he’s ambitions to have his own broom-making company are rather ambitious (or so Slughorn tells him) with the way the market currently stands, maybe if he’d listened to the hat, he would’ve gone to Gryffindor instead and he and Sirius could’ve been…
Well, who knows?
The fact is that James, despite everything, is obsessed with finding out why something as dumb as his house had ruined the potential for their friendship.
He’s not some slimy snake, and if he’d been given a chance…
Yet, Sirius isn’t giving an inch.
He shows up to the Prefect Shift, does his job and leaves. Barely engaging if at all and it’s driving James mad.
He needs to do something because he goes completely around the bend, so he opens his mouth to – well, he’s not sure – when Sirius says, “Look, Potter, there’s no need for you to constantly chatter in my ear while on the job, so why don’t we just walk in silence?”
James could just let it go… but that’s not him.
“Why do you hate me?” James bursts out, stopping in the middle of a quiet corridor.
“Hate you?” Sirius questions, stopping, too. “I don’t know – I mean, isn’t it obvious?”
“No, it’s not,” James retorts. “I’m the one that should hate you, not the other way around.”
“Excuse me?” Sirius scoffs. “What have I ever done to you?”
James rolls his eyes. “Like you don’t know that I tried to stay friends after the train ride and then you called me a slimy Slytherin and that you’d never be friends with me. That you were just ‘entertaining me’ to stay on my good side because the Potters are one of the Ancient and Nobel Houses.”
Sirius shakes his head. “I said that when I was eleven and surrounded by peer pressure to believe that Gryffindors and Slytherins couldn’t be friends, that you’d lead me down a dangerous path like they thought Snape would do to Evans… that Slytherins couldn’t be trustworthy and then you went and proved it by ruining my hair with color changing potion in my drink the next time we ate together by the lake.”
James frowns. He never bothered to actually confront Sirius on the things that he said that day to find out if any of what he said had been true.
It would make sense if that were true… if Sirius wanted to be friends but had the same peer pressure that James had dealt with (and would’ve easily ignored), which resulted in an ongoing feud because he was hurt by James and James was hurt by him.
“I – I overheard you say that, and I thought you were playing me. All I wanted was to be your friend and you said that you’d never be a friend of a Slytherin…”
Sirius scoffs. “And then, you decided to cut your losses by starting a feud with me.”
James nods. “Yeah, I – I messed up good.”
“Yeah, you did.”
“You didn’t help,” James accuses. He’s not the only one to blame here. Sirius could’ve laughed off the prank and decided to be friends.
Sirius shrugs. “I followed your lead; you can’t blame me for that.”
“Yeah, you’re right, maybe we could start over instead?”
“I suppose so.”

The first of their prefect rounds after that until the holidays were a lot better.
James had been right about their connection. Once he and Sirius had decided to be friends rather than enemies, they were like two peas in a pod. All of their classes were together since they were sixth years, and even time in their common rooms weren’t spent away from each other because James had his invisibility cloak.
That’s how the day before the holidays began, James finds himself laying on Sirius’ bed in Gryffindor tower. The curtains are drawn and they’re sitting across from each other, looking at their new, finished invention – the mirrors.
Now that James had Sirius’ attention, he never wants to let it go. They’ve been called co-dependent, but James doesn’t care, the last few months at Hogwarts with Sirius as his best mate have been amazing.
“Ready to test it?”
Sirius nods.
“James Potter,” Sirius says into the mirror, and he appears in James’ mirror.
James grins. “It works.”
“Did you ever doubt that it would?”
“Nah, we’re too brilliant for that.”
Sirius grins into his mirror. “Imagine the things we could’ve gotten up to together if we’d been mates all along.”
James laughs. “Maybe we’d be more than best mates, even.”
Sirius looks up at him. “More than best mates?”
James flushes. He’s come to realize that his sort-of obsession with Sirius spiraled from wanting to be his friend to a fancy somewhere along the line.
“Er, forget I said anything.”
“Maybe I don’t want to forget,” Sirius says, taking both of their mirrors and putting them off to the side. “Do you fancy me, James?”
“I think you know the answer to that,” James answers, watching Sirius scootch forward. “I don’t think I would’ve kept up the feud with you if there wasn’t some other reason for my obsession and you are the Gryffindor Casanova. Any bloke or bird would be lucky to land you.”
Rather than answer, Sirius leans forward and gently grabbing James’ face, kisses him passionately.
It’s everything that James had been thinking about for months – since he realized that he fancied Sirius.
Unfortunately, they’re interrupted when Shacklebolt comes barreling in with some of Sirius’ other roommates that James never cared to learn the names of (he was only jealous of Kingsley being friends with Sirius and that’s why he learned his name).
They jump apart, both panting and flushed.
“Potter, what are you doing in here?” the sandy-haired one asks. He seems to dislike James the most, but James could care less.
“Snogging my new boyfriend,” James states. Of course, they only just kissed, so Sirius might not…
“Yeah, and you just ruined a perfect kiss,” Sirius says to his mates. “So, leave?”
“Not a chance, Black,” the same bloke as before says. “This is our dorm room and Potter isn’t even supposed to be here.”
Sirius huffs. “Fine, we know plenty of places to snog anyway, let’s go.”
***
Their walk to Sirius’ hideout snogging spot isn’t the smooth walk that James had assumes as they’ve taken to randomly stopping and kissing and teasing and joking all the way there. It’s like they were on a cloud and James couldn’t be happier.
It’s later when they’ve gotten their fill of snogging and they’re cuddled up in the falling snow under a tree by the frozen Great Lake, that James asks, “Do you think we’d have always ended up here if we had been sorted together?”
Sirius smiles. “I think we’d have cost too much chaos in the same house, but yeah, we’d always end up here.”
“Me too.” James grins. “Maybe we’d have ended up here sooner, but I definitely think we were destined to be together.”
Sirius hums and lifts the cup of hot chocolate they’d gotten from one of the house elves. “Here’s to destiny.”
“Destiny and happily ever after.”
