Exactly 21 years ago, Rachel Corrie, 23-year-old American peace activist and hero from Olympia, Washington, was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer in southern Gaza, while undertaking nonviolent direct action to protect the home of a Palestinian family from demolition.

On March 16, 2003, Corrie stood in front of a Palestinian home in hopes of stopping a bulldozer operated by Israeli forces from flattening the home in the Rafah refugee camp.

Israeli forces operating the 60-tonne D9 bulldozer built by Caterpillar Inc continued moving toward Corrie as she stood her ground, running her over and leaving her crushed.

There were many witnesses, including fellow American activist Greg Schnabel, would tell the media Rachel had been wearing an orange fluorescent jacket and was “clearly” visible to the bulldozer driver, as well as to Israeli forces in a nearby tank.

Twenty minutes after the bulldozer backed away, Corrie was pronounced dead.

Corrie’s peace work in Gaza took place against the backdrop of the Second Intifada (Palestinian uprising), which started in September 2000 and lasted until February 2005.

After Corrie’s death, some of her writings were collected by her family and published under the title Let Me Stand Alone: The Journals of Rachel Corrie.

One piece contained in the collection was from an email she had written her mother from Rafah on February 27, 2003 – just weeks before her death.

Corrie wrote: “Just want to write to my mom and tell her that I’m witnessing this chronic, insidious genocide and I’m really scared, and questioning my fundamental belief in the goodness of human nature. This has to stop. I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. I don’t think it’s an extremist thing to do anymore.”

Okay so a lot of you seemed interested in my fic about the children of Percabeth, Valgrace and Solangelo going on a classic demigod quest, so here is the next character I want to introduce you to:

Meet Olympia Jackson-Chase!

I definitely have the most lore for her so this might be the longest rant

The daughter of Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase

She’s the oldest of the Next-Gen Trio, as Percy and Annabeth were one of the first Greek demigod couples to have kids. She’s also been at Camp the longest.

She has two siblings, Tyler (9) and Kiera “Kiki” (7) but they stay back at camp while she’s on the quest.

She’s been living under the shadow of Percy and Annabeth’s fame her whole life, and grown up with children at camp dramatically telling stories about the Battle of Manhattan while she just sits there wondering why it’s so glorified. The other two experience that too, but she’s the most bothered by it.

Because of this, she kind of has a begrudging relationship with the rest of the Athena and Poseidon Cabin, and mostly keeps to herself aside from hanging out Isabella and Fin. Still, when the time comes to asking them to take care of her siblings when she goes on the quest, she would trust them completely.

I wrote a fic about her aaaaages ago- it was one of the first fics I’ve ever published on tumblr- I never finished it, it’s not canon to this and I’m probably gonna steal quite a lot of it for this fic. If you’ve read it no you haven’t this totally the first time you’re reading about her shh.

She’s homeschooled. It makes the most sense in terms of keeping her and her siblings safe from monsters and also allowing her to get training from her parents. Also, demigods just don’t do well in public education. I imagine Percy is a stay-at-home dad (he’s a part-time surfing coach in the summer while the kids are at Camp) while Annabeth is making the big bucks at the architecture firm.

I personally think that studying Marine Biology is way more her thing than Percy’s. It combines her dad’s love of the ocean with her mom’s academic prowess. Sometimes she just wants to sink to the bottom of the Mariana Trench and study the fish and not talk to anyone. (Don’t we all).

Her main weapon is a Trident- a gift from Poseidon- that stays fork-sized most of the time but grows into full size when you get it wet. She can also call it back to her hand like Mjolnir in the Thor movies (or like a Loyalty Trident in Minecraft) so it works at both close-range and long-range.

She’s also the most adept fighter at Camp Half-Blood and is SCARY powerful. She can be cold and calculating and strategical, ruthless like the ocean. She’s also inherited both Percy’s and Annabeth’s leadership skills, so often is the one to take charge in sticky situations.

She is Aro/Ace, which is fine because she’s friends with two bisexuals who are attracted to enough genders for them all.

Her birth symbolised the end of the feud between Poseidon and Athena, which is why she has one grey eye and one green one.

She’s also about 6ft tall.

She got her name bc she was born on Olympus (some shenanigans happened where all the routes to the hospitals were blocked by monsters and Annabeth still had her pass to Olympus from when she was re-designing it, so they decided to have the baby there)

Her middle name is “Grace”, mostly left over from an old fic where I wasn’t sure if I was gonna include Jason’s death or not (he doesn’t die in this one). But still, neither Thalia nor Jason use that name anymore, and it’s also bc Apollo helped deliver her (Artemis showed him how to do it) and he suggested a rhyming name “Olympia Grace Jackson-Chase”.

She has ADHD

Grover is her godfather and she gets on well with his and Juniper’s kid (yet to be named)

She bought Finley a Blåhaj from IKEA for his birthday (and he takes it with him on the quest)

She dies the tips of her hair blonde to be like her mom, and so her and Finley often dye their hair together.

I haven’t figured out how to include it in the fic yet, but her and Finley do have a talk about how their parents are both Tartarus survivors.

She’s kinda used to being the cold, hard leader in most cases, but can be a soft girly girl with Isabella.

Isabella is also the only person who can match her equally at chess and other strategy games.

She’s also the only one who knows that both Finley and Isabella have a crush on each other, and is BEGGING to end the pining already.

Asks and comments are appreciated! It really helps motivate me to write more. Also, what should her fatal flaw be? I’d love to hear suggestions because I’m honestly stumped.

The loredump for Isabella might take a while because she’s the one I know least about and what I do know might change.

Murder, Burglary, Unlawful Use of Firearm

In November 2023, one of two Pierce County Washington teenagers was sentenced to spend 12 years in prison for the killing of an Orting Washington man in September 2022.

Gabriel Davies and another man, Justin Yoon, had both pleaded guilty in adult court to the murder of Daniel McCaw, 51.

Davies and Yoon agreed to a sentencing recommendation of 123 months. A judge then added 27 months to their sentences, for a total of 150 months behind bars.

According to court papers, it took four days before McCaw's body was discovered in his home. During that period, authorities said that Davies, then 16 years old, staged his disappearance to make it seem like he had been the victim of a crime. He was reported missing when he left his home in Olympia to attend football practice at Olympia High School and never showed up.His car was then found near Tenino.

Deputies said they found items thrown around inside the vehicle and even noticed blood. They also found his phone shattered outside the vehicle.

Two days later, Davies was found safe after an extensive search throughout Thurston County. During his disappearance, Detectives learned that McCaw had previously been in a relationship with Davies' mother. Within 24 hours, he was arrested for McCaw's murder, along with Yoon, who was also 16 years old at the time.

On Sept. 1, 2022, Pierce County deputies found McCaw's body following a welfare check at McCaw's home on 190th Street East in Orting. Co-workers reported that McCaw hadn't reported to work in four days and wasn't answering any of his calls or text messages. Upon entering the home, deputies said they smelled what seemed to be the odor of a decomposing body. They also said they saw a German shepherd around McCaw's property. They then found McCaw's body in the home's laundry room.

It was later determined that McCaw died after being shot and stabbed. Detectives then turned to footage from McCaw's home security system and identified Davies and Yoon entering the victim's home through a dog door on Aug. 28, 2022.

According to detectives, Davies and Yoon went camping at Panther Lake with friends and family between Aug. 27-28, 2022. Family said the two left a cabin on Aug. 28 shortly after midnight and returned around 6:30 a.m. They left again shortly before noon that day and did not return.

Davies was then reported missing on Aug. 31, according to charging documents.

According to court papers, Davies initially told detectives he couldn’t remember where he’d been during his disappearance and “admitted to damaging his cell phone because he was afraid that the police were going to find what was on it.”

On Sept. 2, 2022, Davies’ father called the lead detective with Thurston County, saying, “Gabe was involved in (the victim’s) death.” According to Davies’ father, Davies was approached by “biker buddies” of McCaw, threatening Davies to steal something from the victim’s home.

Davies and Yoon then developed a plan to steal the item from McCaw’s safe, according to Davies' father. The father then told authorities that the two snuck into the home through a dog door, as seen on surveillance footage.

Prosecutors said there was never any evidence to suggest Davies had ever had any interaction with biker gangs. They said Davies fabricated the story to absolve himself of pre-meditated murder charges.

Happening in Mikkeli!

Dinosaurock, which started in 1987, and Jurassic Rock, which began in 2007, are getting a successor. Dinosaurock comes to Visulahti, Mikkeli,from August 15 to 16, 2025.

The first 12 artists to be announced for the festival have now been revealed. The lineup includes names like Joker Out, Ismo Alanko, Sexmane, Stam1na, Etta, Sara Siipola, Irina, Eevil Stöö, and Mikkeli-based BRHG. Additional programmes will be revealed soon.

The band, which rose to international fame with their song Carpe Diem in last year's Eurovision Song Contest, visited Finland for the first time in 2023. Joker Out performed to sold-out audiences at Olympia, Tampere, at Logomo, Turku, and at two shows at the Tavastia Club, Helsinki. The tickets were sold out in no time. The band performed at Tavastia¹ in the early 2024.

Dinosaurock of Visulahti makes a comeback next summer - organising the festival are Jurassic veteran Mikko Jokipii and Jonna Vuolle from Mikkeli

A dream had for many years of many live music lovers in Mikkeli is about to come true next summer, on on the 15th and 16th of August to be precise.

Mikkeli will then once again host a rock festival, and in what many even consider to be the only right venue too, Visulahti Travel Center.

On Friday and Saturday, around a dozen domestic and foreign artists will perform in Visulahti, of which about half will be announced at this stage.

Among others, Stam1na, Ismo Alanko, Bloodred Hourglass, Sexmane, Irina, Saimaa, Mokoma, Etta and Eevil Stöö will be coming to Visulahti.

One international guest has been confirmed so far: Joker Out, the Slovenian indie rock band that made a name for themselves at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023.

The band has since visited Finland, performing for instance twice at the Tavastia club in Helsinki and at Ruisrock last summer.

“We are still looking for two or three international performers. The essential thing is that they'll strengthen the festival's repertoire” says Mikko Jokipii, one of the festival's creators.

The festival carries a name that can only be described as legendary, Dinosaurock.

The organiser is a joint-stock company of the same name, founded this autumn and backed by Jurassic Rock's long-time background figure Mikko Jokipii, who is also a film producer, Jonna Vuolle from Mikkeli, and Mikko Linnansaari, who has extensive experience in festival production.

“Our goal is to create a great event for the people of Mikkeli, a celebration of life and joy. It will be a medium-sized rock festival with lots of fun things to do.”

“As a Mikkeli resident, I feel really great to be able to create an event like this with great professionals” festival's producer Vuolle sums up.

“There has been a tremendous amount of positivity about this everywhere.

Let's take a look at the festival history of Mikkeli.

Dinosaurock was a festival organised by the live music association Melmu in Visulahti between 1987 and 1990. It revolutionised Finnish festival culture with its high quality, diverse lineup and relaxed atmosphere.

The Jurassic Rock festival, on the other hand, was held from 2007 to 2018, first in Visulahti and then in Kenkävero.

The new Dinosaurock can be seen as a continuation of the work of Jurassic Rock, which many still fondly remember. So why the name Dinosaurock?

“Dinosaurock is the original rock festival from Mikkeli. We want to honour that, it simply felt better to return to that name” explains Jokipii.

“Additionally, the name Jurassic Rock is now owned by Sanoma Group. It’s better that it stays there” Vuolle adds.

“In any case, our Dinosaurock aims to be liked by both Dinosaurock and Jurassic Rock visitors” Jokipii sums up.

The two-day event is being built in line with its predecessors, as a warm-hearted event.

“Visulahti has always been important to me. It was the number one aspect of Jurassic Rock and once the venue was moved to Kenkävero, the event wasn’t the same for me anymore” Jokipii says.

Visulahti will have two stages, a bigger and a smaller one.

“The planning of the festival area is already underway. Now we are scouting the best possible locations for the stages and other infrastructure” Jokipii says.

Services will cater to even the most demanding audience.

“The time has changed quite a lot since the early years of Jurassic Rock when it comes to festival services. At the same time, the customer expectations have risen regarding the quality of food and drink sales, accessibility, and VIP services. We are working hard on these aspects in collaboration with Visulahti” Jokipii reveals.

The organisers are pleased with the reception the festival project has received. The preparations were started well in advance.

“At the beginning of summer 2023, I was in contact with Mikko for the first time, when I got the idea of organising a music event in Mikkeli.”

“Due to Mikko having a busy schedule with films, the idea was left to simmer and the serious planning of Dinosaurock began this spring with the first meetings in Mikkeli” Vuolle explains.

“It feels like Mikkeli’s music scene now has a space for at least an event of this size” Jokipii describes.

“People everywhere have been incredibly positive about it. Ticket buyers, concert organisers, bands, everyone has been totally like, “Yeah!” And yes, the word ‘legendary’ has come up quite a few times” Vuolle laughs.

This positive reception has also convinced the organisers that the project is worth pursuing.

“If the feedback had been more along the lines of ‘meh, I’m not sure’, we probably wouldn’t even be talking about Dinosaurock right now” Vuolle says.

Next summer, the organisers of Dinosaurock expect to attract approximately 5000 people per day.

“It’s a modest goal. But we want to create an event that grows sustainably, if it grows, and that it can be organised practically, repeatedly, and every year” Vuolle notes.

“The program is curated so that every performer matters. And, of course so that the selection is diverse and interesting” she concludes

Favorite OS fanfics? If you read them

Oooooh well do I got some for you, anon! Shame a lot of my favorites are restricted to Google Docs and aren't publicly published anywhere, but I'll give some a shoutout anyway.

Ships Ahoy!: An absolute classic. Lilac's entire slate OS-wise, really, but Ships Ahoy will always be a favorite. Beautifully crafted with great character dynamics, big old lore, and lots of gut punches that make me go "oof" and then sob eternally. There is also...

Full Circle: An unofficial sequel to Ships Ahoy that focuses on Olive and Oscar's relationship, with Otto, Otis, Oona, Oprah and Olympia all playing matchmaker to try and get them back together. Holy shit is it one of the funniest Odd Squad fics I've read, especially as far as Otis not knowing what shipping is and Olympia and Oona's shipping war is concerned. The A/N at the end is also something that resonates with me a lot, and as someone who writes OS fanfic, I like to look back on it every once in a while because it's very true.

Forever and a Mile: This one is a bittersweet and adorable one-shot that focuses on Octavia in the time she was tube-blocked by O'Brian and was confined to Precinct 13579's HQ, as well as Opie, the mysterious ballpit agent. I love this one because it gives a lot of depth to the ballpit and shows off some of the levels within it, while also making me feel sympathy for Octavia for all that she's going through.

OSMU: Fanfiction Friction: I'm putting this one here mainly because it's one of the few OSMU fics I've seen. It follows the Mobile Unit as they realize that, well, there are no fics written about them, and they do all this wild and crazy stuff in an effort to get a story out of it. There are an absolute fuckton of jabs to various things -- Elon Musk, ABBA, the comic book industry, and even the author himself, among others. There's even a bit where the author makes a jab at someone who was a bit of a pervert who liked to make up stories about agents naked and/or in bathing suits (key word is "was"; they got banned from Deviantart twice and AFAIK they are not around anymore), but you might not know that without context. If you're uncomfortable with that, though, the rest of the story is just as enjoyable if you skip it.

Viva La Vida: Villain Olive is a popular concept in the fandom. This is one of the earlier instances of it! The winner of a trivia contest held by Lilac, the idea for this one was conceived by Joshua Kilimnik and the story was written by Lilac. It features Olive slowly turning to the odd side due to a rapidly declining sanity with Odd Todd giving her all the pushes she needs. I like Olive's internal struggle throughout the story, as well as the (bad) ending which caps things off perfectly. (There's also a good ending, added for those who don't like to see Olly-child suffer. Just as beautiful!)

Icing: Fuck your two-sentence horror stories. All my homies hate two-sentence horror stories. Have a 91-word horror story that's one hell of a flashfic and puts a terrifying spin on what was already a pretty terrifying line in-series.

Through Frostbitten Stone: There is another fic I read a long time ago where Olympia manages to get hypothermia while trying to save Otis. (That's the gist of it. The full context would derail this bit.) This fic takes a bit of a different turn from that, with Otis getting hypothermia instead of Olympia, and is also one of the longest Odd Squad fics I've ever seen (and that is barring my own, thank you). It's a hefty read at nearly 30k words, but it's a beautiful read that showcases the Otis-Olympia partner dynamic perfectly.

...Okay fine. FINE. Two more and then that's it. God there are way too many good ones.

Star Agents: This was one that was Google-Docs-exclusive and has now been published onto AO3. And thank God, because it is incredibly good for an AU story where Otto and Todd are partners while Olive is on the villains' side. There are more chapters that are buried in Google Docs currently, but I recommend keeping an eye on this one for updates.

From The Desk of Doctor O: I like the format of this one. Dr. O trying to reform Odd Todd through court-mandated therapy sessions is also a really neat concept. Mainly because, if Odd Squad's judicial system were more realistic, I can 100% see court-mandated therapy being a thing. Definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Athena’s Colors

So most color associations are modern constructions that are often based on cultural perceptions of color symbolism. I went on a little research trip (that took upwards of four hours) to see what I could find to justify the associations of certain colors with Athena.

Dark Blue/Navy: Modern SPG, This is a color often associated with the intellect, wisdom and professionalism so that makes sense!

Green: Modern SPG - but I'm not sure where that comes from or why so if you know please comment!

Bronze: From Athena's epithet Khalkioikos, “Of the Bronze House” and of course the fact that bronze was the metal used for arms.

Gold: Typically associated with the divine, gold was also used to describe the tassels of the aegis and Athena's helmet. Athena Parthenos (statue) was also made of ivory and gold.

Red:

“In sculpture, as well as some polychrome vases, Athena is frequently depicted wearing a red dress [...] for Athena the choice of colour may also be connected with the peplos that she received at the Panathenaia, which appears to have been saffron-dyed (krokeos) with additional purple decoration.” - (Susan Deacy and Alexandra Villing, What was the colour of Athena's Aegis? Pg. 115)

Walter Burkert (1931-2015) "Greek Religion", Harvard University Press 1987

"In this book Walter Burkert, the most eminent living historian of ancient Greek religion, has produced the standard work for our time on that subject. First published in German in 1977, it has now been translated into English with the assistance of the author himself. A clearly structured and readable survey for students and scholars, it will be welcomed as the best modern account of any polytheistic religious system. Burkert draws on archaeological discoveries, insights from other disciplines, and inscriptions in Linear B to reconstruct the practices and beliefs of the Minoan-Mycenaean age. The major part of his book is devoted to the archaic and classical epochs. He describes the various rituals of sacrifice and libation and explains Greek beliefs about purification. He investigates the inspiration behind the great temples at Olympia, Delphi, Delos, and the Acropolis - discussing the priesthood, sanctuary, and oracles. A classic on ancient Greek religion! Herodotus is naturally used in it - alongside the other great ancient Greek classics- as a major source on ancient Greek religion. But Burkert highliths also Herodotus' role as one of the pioneers of the critical reflection on the religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Greeks.

If the gods were somehow made obligated and/or bored enough to partake in the human world of taxes and rent: what occupations would they have? It can be several of you can’t think of one

I think I answered this question but luckily for you all I don't mind answering again with new and different gods and giving clarification to more specific answers so...

Zeus: When you are thunder and lightning in a bottle I imagine getting into the energy industry seems like an obvious fit, plus it'll allow him to generate the billions, maybe trillions of dollars necessary to avoid the inevitable lawsuits from his interactions with mortals.

Hera: Wedding Planner, also she'd be good at it and learn about this new thing called no fault divorce and cry a tear of joy and also throw in divorce attorney to help with her domain and bring in the big bucks.

Demeter: Obvious? Yes? But no less appropriate. She'd be into farming and agriculture and probably turning deserts into lush land.

Hestia: The Ultimate Bed and Breakfast Experience! It'll be the coziest place every made on mortal land!

Poseidon: The Sea is a treasure trove of vast unexplored treasures but Poseidon would probably open a fishery and a professional deep sea diving company to recover lost treasure. Which considering he'd know where every sunken treasure ship is would be helpful in the inevitable lawsuits.

Hades: Well Hades would probably laugh at the idea of mortal kind charging him rent for his home but if he wanted to live up top with Persephone (at Demeter's insistence no doubt) he'd probably open a funeral home with her and it would have the best caskets and flower arrangements ever.

Apollo: *Okay Scrub keep the Apollo jokes to a minimum* Okay! Apollo would probably be an artist and musician, sing to sold out crowds who would flock to see him sing, writing masterful poetry that would make people cry, and attracting horde of fangirls...until the one girl that doesn't want him comes along and one thing leads to another he's embroiled in lawsuits *No! bad Scrub!*

Artemis: Either a Women's Self-Defense Boot Camp or a Hunting Community where she teaches how to ethically hunt to cull populations of certain species.

Ares: Several jobs come to mind, a MMA or Boxing Prize Fighter (he'd be eager to show people why it's called MARtial artS), A Self Defense instructor that is for some reason really popular with women, Military or Security Service. There's a lot he can do...but he'd probably stick with Military.

Athena: Hmm, she'd be weaving the latest fashions, teaching several college courses on Philosophy, Mathematics, and Government, and being an female UFC Champion at the sametime and it would fit.

Hermes: The Ultimate Delivery Company, would pretty much be able to ship anything, anywhere, at anytime and be really popular. I can also see him getting into professional racing.

Aphrodite: Okay! Several choices, Modeling, both professional and Instagram, seems obvious as does acting. The sex industry however is an unsung choice she'd probably gravitate towards. God help the publishers who don't rank her the top of whatever list she's on. Their bodies will never be found.

Hephaestus: Robotics, Engineering, Metallurgy, he'd make things that would make Tony Stark jealous and put Elon Musk out of business (which is always a good thing).

Dionysus: Oh he'd have the ultimate nightclub that's an escape room designed by Ariadne on the weekends. Every wine would make a 1000 dollar bottle of Grand Cru taste like month old grape juice.

Heracles: He'd own the Ultimate Gym with Hebe managing the female clientele and get really into Mr. Olympia Competitions and Bodybuilding and Strongman (and wow the world by somehow being good at both at the same time).

Alright the Primary Olympians (and Heracles) are taken care off. Let's move on to some lesser know deities.

Phobos and Deimos: While they'd no doubt be tempted to get into warfare with their dad like the Greek Days, they'd learn about horror movies and haunted house and be like "We Ballin!". There movies however would be so scary that after they'd sent their test audiences into therapy they'd have to tone them down to actually sell them. Which would suck for them but they'd make a tidy living being horror movie directors and haunted house experts.

Harmonia: Probably a non-profit charity that goes to helping the under privileged and marginalized. More than likely gets into a few fights with the police while protest which in turn leads to Ares and/or Aphrodite bailing her out and being proud of her.

Eros II and Psyche plus the Erotes: Dating App developers. They'd probably make the ultimate website and dating app to help people meet each other and build lasting connections...and also ban Apollo, Zeus, and Poseidon after the mountain of complaints.

Enyo and Eris: Gang Leaders. Eris would be a thief, hacker, and all around saboteur for those who can afford to pay her fee (or give her something that would spark strife for at least a month). Enyo however would be into the crimes that involve her getting her hands dirty with blood and broken bones but would love assassinations the most and weapon dealing. Occasionally hired by Ares during military operations as their skills are invaluable even if they're livewires.

Eileithyia: The Ultimate Midwife! Probably working at a hospital owned by Asclepius.

Leto: Childcare and child rearing and she'd be damn good at it. Shakes her head and nods whenever Apollo gets into trouble but since Zeus usually bails him out doesn't complain that much.
