Sad sleepover :^( WIP!!

Drawing my (high school version) OCs at a sleepover together hehe. As you can see Dakota and Foshi are being all cute and cuddly and fast asleep *SNOOOOOORE MIMIMI* and Suzie is awake being the depressed lesbian that she is. This poor girl won’t stop pining over Foshi she fr needs a break.

Don't think I've seen anyone ask about Arity yet - I know you've shared a bit about characters, but I'd love to hear more!

Ah! Thanks for asking 🤍 I figured everyone had heard enough about this bad boy already - but I'm glad I haven't bored you to death yet 😆

So, as I said elsewhere, there's two plotlines to this story, the current [2011] story, and then a retelling of the past which Arity is writing about the years between 2007-2010 (or thereabouts) covering two relationships (with Joel and Paul) that she had during that time frame. She's trying to pick through the bones, so to speak, to get at what went wrong, what she should do differently with the current relationship (with Jimmy); and as part of her ongoing therapy, as well.

For the most part these two plots don't overtly cross-over, but every now and then the things she's writing about are discussed in the current plotline.

This is the bit I am currently working on, where Arity (in the current timeline) catches up with Rowan, Joel's friend, long after the relationship with Joel is over. The conversation is meant to be awkward, so that's taking a bunch of tinkering. Suzie is Arity's bestie, and she and Rowan are in a long-term relationship at this point.

So - here it is:

Suzie was on the doorstep before I even reached the small front porch.

‘You’re later than I expected.’ We hugged each other and she stepped aside, inviting me in. As I went inside, I said, ‘The bus system is fucked. I feel like I backtracked three times to get here.’ She chuckled. ‘Yeah – that hasn’t changed a bit, has it?’ Rowan stuck his head around the corner with a smile, a reserved smile, if there is such a thing. He’d always been like that with everyone, though – as though he was never quite committed to the interaction. ‘Arity, it’s been a while.’ ‘Rowan,’ I said fondly, and hugged him. ‘You’ve gone grey!’ ‘Shuddup,’ he said, smiling again as we all went into the lounge, where he'd been sitting. ‘You’ve not got any younger yourself.’ ‘Tell me about it,’ I said as I settled next to Suzie on one of the couches. ‘That’s one thing about coming back to my hometown – I find myself assailed by the crushing realisation that it’s been twenty years since this or that happened.’ ‘It’s good you’re back, anyway,’ he said. ‘It was weird after you left with whatever his name was. You just dropped off the face of the earth.’ Suzie tutted him, but I said, ‘No – that’s fair to say. I made some very bad decisions around that time.’ I’d never even mentioned Joel to Rowan before, I didn’t think, but I made myself say, ‘Joel didn’t exactly help.’ Rowan scoffed. ‘You two were never going to work out.’ ‘No shit,’ I said quietly. ‘How is he? I assume you’re still in touch?’ He looked at me with a weird expression – censorious, I thought – so I felt compelled to add, ‘We still talk occasionally. I just thought you might’ve heard from him more recently than I have.’ Suzie looked surprised, but she said nothing. It was Rowan who said, ‘You do?’ I shrugged. I didn't want to say that it was always when one or the other of us were drunk and crying about our current relationships; or that, for a long time, he'd been the sole source of support I'd had, as fucked up as that was. Not to Rowan, anyway.  ‘At least a couple times a year. I don’t hate him. We were just wrong for each other. No one to blame for that.’ He said, still like he shouldn’t be saying anything, ‘He was over a couple months back, for a course. He hasn’t changed any.’ I refrained from saying that I wasn’t surprised, and that I thought he probably never would.
