If you're here, you know why I think it's all a dream, and you know why I believe Richard/Astrid/Rory aren't real. Betelgeuse's couple's therapy is why I think the dream is about giving Lydia a child.

As someone who has created beetlekid OC's, this scene was first and foremost educational to me. It tells us that this is the best Betelgeuse can do. He cannot impregnate Lydia, he can only create these joke abominations; and he's not happy about it.

Curiously, Lydia isn't happy about it either. She doesn't give a second of attention to his Freudian-slip joke, not even in the dream, because she finds it supremely un-funny, and her subconscious is self-aware enough in this moment to recognize it. Her refusal to acknowledge his contention comes back to bite her in the end when Astrid births the very same abomination she stubbornly ignored.

Betelgeuse's canonical juvenile jealousy is shining clear through in this scene and it's not about Rory. It's about Astrid: the true love of Lydia's life, Betelgeuse's biggest competition; their own daughter.

One of the biggest debates among beetlebabes before any of the musical drama ever occurred was "can they have kids?" The idea is both mocked and celebrated in fic. It makes sense that Tim would honor his fans by centering his entire sequel around addressing that question, and how their marriage might cope down the line once Lydia starts longing for things Betelgeuse can't give her.

Sidenote: Betelgeuse's office mirrors Charles' study in its composition with bookshelves lining the walls and windows behind the desk. Charles' study appears in the scene just before this one, supporting the parallel. Betelgeuse's clothing here is also suspiciously similar to Charles' typical cardigan fit, as seen in the screenshot below and recycled in the cartoon. I believe this allusion speaks to Lydia's daddy issues.

That Charles is Delia's "horny handyman" is yet another parallel in this film between Betelgeuse and Charles.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Theory

Lydia is an unreliable narrator. Winona Ryder's personal headcanon that Lydia is a spinster by choice waiting in that attic is true. The film begins with her in the window in the house on the hill before blipping her over to New York suspiciously, and ends with her presumably in that same room. Astrid and Rory and Richard aren't real. The events of the film are all Betelgeuse indulging his wife's desire for a child, something he can't give her.

But he's sick and has to make his jokes, so he makes sure to remind her at the end with grandbabyjuice that her desire for a normal life is misguided and ridiculous, and she's stuck with him. Till death do we part, babes.

Cliche? Absolutely. Is that BJ's brand? Absolutely. The more I think about it, the more this is the most valid interpretation of the plot.

Any kid of beetlejuice is going to be feral to some extent. I'm sorry but beetlejuice has feral genes, it's straight up facts.

I also wanted to play around with a kid design where the boy looks more like his momma (also rebelling against the fact where the offspring looks like a carbon copy of the parent of the same gender in most cartoons. why can't it be the opposite? or a good mix of both?)
