honestly starting to believe that people who think vets are being sponsored by pet food companies to sell you kibble and "know that kibble is actually terrible for your pet!11!!1!" but "care more about money than proper nutrition" shouldn't own pets
#tell me you know nothing about vet school and veterinarians without telling me#vet students have to go through SO many nutrition classes#im not even a fucking prevet student and i have to go through them too. prevet students get like 4x as many as that :sob:#if youre majoring in any field that works with animals you learn nutrition as part of your degree program#you reading doggy mommy blogs where sharon said that kibble is the devil and bad for dogs because it looks like kibble is not education#KIBBLE IS GOOD FOR YOUR DOG#obviously some brands of kibble are atrocious and no one should feed it to their dogs#but balanced kibbles with good ingredients (ie a lot of kibbles sold by purina) should genuinely be most if not all of your dogs diet#adding a bunch of stuff on top of kibble can be worse for your dog than just...giving them the kibble#anyways specifically about the 'vets are being sponsored by dog food companies' thing#thats like saying teachers are being sponsored by antifa to make your kid gay or some shit#vets arent getting paid enough (or at all by said dog food companies) to try to sell you a specific brand of pet food#just to 'make a profit'#simon says

Meet Meaningful Tree
Meaningful Tree came about in our quest to take proper care of Kevin, our rescue dog. We wanted to make sure that he was receiving the best nutrition possible after suffering from malnutrition and poor gut health.
When we changed up his (and our other fur baby’s) diet with a generous mix of whole foods and high-quality extra virgin olive oil, we noticed their skin and coat health improved. Moreover, their eyes brightened and energy levels increased.
We even noticed their breath smelled better and their stools were firmer.
As such, we wanted to find a way to incorporate EVOO into our pet’s diets. With the help of smart dog-parent scientists, we were able to bond EVOO with Acacia fiber, a naturally occurring prebiotic fiber, to create Super Pet Total Health.
This pet superpowder is designed to provide your furry friend with essential fatty acids and probiotics for optimal gut health and anti-inflammatory support. Our unique blend of ingredients helps promote healthy digestion, regularity and overall well-being.

TS3 - Pet Bowl, Pet Food Packaging, Pet Kibbles Replacement Mod
D E F A U L T R E P L A C E M E N T & F U N C T I O N A L P E T B O W L WITH GeoStates (Full, Half, Empty)
-----------------------------------
Remember those EA tacky pet bowls and purple pixelated pet food packaging....
Not just pixelated... I made these default replacement mods for the sake of realism. It's because in real life there is no such thing as Pet food kibbles made by commercial pet food industry for both Cats & Dogs. Cat food and Dog food are separated due to different ingredients and nutrition formulated for Cats and Dogs.
Food suitable for both Cats and Dogs are raw food, usually made by small business company or handmade.
-----------------------------------
5 styles you can only choose one :
Dog Food
Cat Food
Cat & Dog Raw Food
Dog Biscuit Chinese New Year Edition
Cat Biscuit Balinese Edition
These Mods will replace:
Pet Bowls (Cheap, Moderate, Luxury) & Pet Kibbles
Each Pet Bowl has 3 Presets and recolourable.
‣ Cheap Pet Bowl using EA's Moderate pet bowl mesh, because plastic pet bowl with round shape is much more common in real life rather than rounded square shape.
‣ Moderate Pet Bowl: Removed the EA stencil on Moderate Pet Bowl because of tacky, pixelated and the "For Dog" design (depicted with bones) cannot be changed to "For Cat" version of design.
‣ Luxury Pet Bowl using "My First Pet Bowl" mesh by myself because it much more realistic for expensive pet bowl with shiny aluminum material. EA's Luxury Pet Bowl with carving and feet are too tacky, complicated and does not exist in real life.
Pet Bowls have title name and price same as EA's.
With thumbnail :
Pet Food Packaging (Decoration)
Pet Food Packaging title name is Simina Pet Chow Price: § 75 You can find on Decoration > Miscellaneous Decor. (Same as EA's)
With thumbnail:
Pet Food Packaging (Pouring)
Requirement: Pets Expansion Pack
⚠️ Disclaimer: These Mods are changing appearance of mesh and texture only, no script Mod. Dogs still can eat Cat food and Cats can eat Dog food following EA code in the game.
⚠️ This package will be replacing the default EA, so you have to choose one. Installing more than one default replacement will cause conflict. ⚠️
As usual, install one of these packages on Package folder. You can safely delete the package if you no longer want to use the default replacement.

[ Download Cat & Dog Raw Food Default Replacement Pack ]

「 ✦ Isekaied Reversed Pt. 5 ✦ 」
↳ Your nutritions had slowly decreased overtime, thus you needed to head out for a grocery trip! Surprisingly, you ran into a cat and, unfortunately, as well as trouble.
Tags:
──────⋆⋅☆⋅⋆──────
It's been approximately 46 days since Xiao made his arrival out of nowhere.
Over the course of the days—weeks, the two of you slowly bonded as time flowed, albeit it was rough the first few weeks, your relationship with him gradually blossomed.
Comparing since a few weeks ago, you've gotten to the point where he could be comfortable enough around you to let his guard down for a while—even better that he didn't draw out his spear with every corner he turned.
In all, you guys were mutuals at best—which was quite progress in your book.
.
"You have to be shitting me."
Xiao's eyes glanced over to you, his brow raised.
You sighed, closing the fridge. "We're out ingredients."
You walked over towards your bag, picking up your wallet which thankfully had money—around a rough $50. Unfortunately, that would mean you'd have to save up once again.
Xiao took notice if your downed mood, before squinting his eyes, trying to get a glimpse of the problem.
You felt a feeling of eyes watching you. Looking over towards the origin of the feeling, you saw Xiao looking towards you, well, the wallet. Seeing he got caught, he quickly averted his gaze like nothing happened.
You eternally chuckled at his shy actions, before your midn reminded you of your problem.
"Well, Xiao. Looks like we're running out of stuff." You huffed with a grimace before starting to put on your shoes. "I'll be back in uhh..20-30 minutes tops."
Xiao looked towards you before giving a slight nod.
Making your ways to the door, you grabbed your keys, phone, earbuds and wallet before turning the doorknob though swiftly turned around, "right! Do you need anything while i'm out?" You asked the yaksha who shook his head. "Don't spend your money on me, or unnecessary things in general." He sighed. You frowned.
You couldn't tell if that was worded weird or if he really did see himself as unnecessary. Nonetheless, you pushed those thoughts away before giving him a thumbs up but closing the door behind you.
You thought for a minute, looking between your wallet and the door.
'am I listening to that? Hell nah.' You grinned before heading towards your apartment elevator.
.....
Making your way down to Safeway, you yelped and tensed up as you felt something furry brush against your leg.
Quickly looking down, your muscles relaxed when finding out it was only a cat and quite a cute one too.
It was a Edgyptian Mau. It's fur was black with some gray and white spots around it's body. Though it's eyes were the most captivating—they looked like a vibrant sunset.
You were quite surprised that an Egyptian Mau was around this area but decided not to look to deep into it. It was probably someone's pet who ran off and ended up in this dump. Though, that wouldn't stop you from giving it a little pet.
"Aren't you a cutie~" You smiled with awe, kneeling down towards the cat to which the animal slightly staggered back. It calmed down though as you put your hand in front of you, letting it sniff it before melting into your hand as you lightly scratched it's jaw.
"Man, I wish I could take you home.." You whined lightly before sighing as you stood up, the cat letting out a needy call, looking up towards you for more scratches.
"Sorry buddy, I gotta get some things from the market." You cried internally as you looked down at the furry creature. Your heart breaking at seeing it's sad face.
Persevering, you looked away, a single tear falling down as you began to walk away, trying your best to ignore the meows of need.
....
"Tofu...tofu.." You mumbled, trying to recall what isle the food was. Unfortunately, while lost in your train of thought, you felt someone harshly bump into you, causing you to snap back to reality.
The person merely grunted with a harsh, 'watch where your standing' which received just as harsh of a glare from your end.
"Idiot." You muttered before going back to your task.
...
Finally after you payed, you left the store, two bags of groceries-one in each hand.
As you exited the store, you subconsciously scanned the 'lot for the black splotched cat.
Your slightly frowned upon not seeing it anywhere. 'Probably ran back to it's owner.' you shook your head, continuing your way home.
As you walked along the street, you heard small paws running a bit behind you along with desperate calls.
Turning around, you saw the cat once more, only it looked rougher—like it had just came out from a low-grade shelter.
You dropped your bags as it clawed onto your legs, meowing. You slightly hissed at the stinging sensation from the new marks as you picked it up—it trying to hide up onto your shoulder.
"Poor baby, what happene-" Your words were cut short when you suddenly heard shouting. "Give the damn cat back!"
Looking ahead, you saw the same man from the store, holding a...bat?
You had a feeling where this was going so, picking up your bags quickly, you made a run for it as the shouting behind you grew louder.
'fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!' You screamed mentally, your legs and arms growing tired with each push but you didn't dare stop. That man seemed restless and merciless, plus, he was right behind your trail.
Unfortunately, you were hit in the shoulder by something hard. Your body giving up as you hit the hard concrete with a thud- the cat standing by you with it's hairs sticking up as it hissed with aggression and fear.
You saw the man try reaching for the cat, though you intervened, by grabbing his hand and biting as hard as you could. The man grunted loudly as you heard a crack and suddenly tasted metal in your mouth.
You grimaced at the metalic taste and gagged a bit.
"You bitch!" He shouted at you before kicking you in the ribs, in return you let out a winded yelp.
As the man saw your stunned state, he went for the black Mau, grabbing it by the back of the neck. Though fortunately, the cat retaliated by scratching the man's hand though led it to be thrown harshly aside. "Fuckin' creature, i'll deal with your shit later." He hissed before turning to you.
You tried getting up only to be hit back down with the same back that knocked you in the first place. "Thats!-" He hit your shoulder, "-for stealing what's mine!" He shouted before he went to strike you at your head, though thankfully you blocked it in time with your arms—feeling a pounding sensation within them.
Suddenly, you looked to the side, finding a very convienent brick. As the manw as distracted, you picked it up and rammed it into the side of the man's ankle.
He shouted curses of pain, giving you a brief break. Unfortunately, it didn't last long before he shouted, going for your head as well as taking a few breaks to kick you around.
Your eyes were teary, feeling bruises forming already. You felt weak and heavy-your body betraying your mind as you screamed it to get up—to do something than lie on the floor helplessly.
"Y'know this wouldn't happened if you just handed us the damn critter. The only person ya' can call for now, tis' God." He snicked, enjoying the sight in front of him.
But something clicked in your brain, and hopefully it worked.
"Xiao!"
The man watched in amusement as you called out a name. "Saying your final goodbyes?" He laughed huskly, but you only gave a grin, "Not quite." You smiled weakly. He stared confused at you but grinned, looking down at your pathetic form.
Suddenly, his view of you was blocked by something, well someone.
Looking up, he was met by a familiar yaksha, his spear centimeters away from his head. He only grinned with amusement once more. "What is this? Some type of costume party?" He laughed though it came to a brief halt and replaced with a winding grunt as he was kicked backwards a few feet on the street.
The man shouted slurs and insults towards the masked yaksha who only replied with silence.
The man's anger grew with each second as he stood from the ground, bat in hands before trying to strike the boy. Unfortunately for him, he was no match for a yaksha. All his strikes were dodged and returned with precision, sharp, powerful and agile blows from the back of the boy's polearm.
Ultimately, near in the end, the man ended on his rear, looking at the immortal in fear before he scurried to get away, embarrassingly. "Keep the damn cat then!"
The yaksha glared at the retreating figure before turning towards you, his mask disappearing onto his belt.
As he helped you get to your feet and wrapped your arm around his neck for support. You saw a glint of concern in his eyes, making your lips curl into a small smile. "Thanks for that back there." You grinned but faltered as you grunted, making Xiao's concern grow.
"Is anything broken?" He asked, his voice stern as ever.
You shook your head, "I don't believe so, just a few-" you were cut with a wave of pain electrocuting you. "-I take that back, a lot of bruising." You chuckled as the adeptus sighed.
Your brows furrowed in worry, glancing back to the animal on the ground. Xiao's gaze followed yours as his expression hardened.
He sighed, knowing where this was going.
.....
Over the course of a few days, you recovered quickly though on the second day, your whole body ached and you ultimately stayed in bed for 24 hours.
As for the cat, he recovered quite quickly as well—almost too quick. It was like a miracle with everything his body took. Though during the few days of resting and even after, it appeared that the cat took a major liking to the adeptus.
As the adeptus would bring you water or check up on you every once in a while, (though albeit when your not noticing cause he's like that 💀), the cat would be at his side, looking towards you then up to him in worry.
Sometimes he'd be laying next to you but ultimately stayed with Xiao most of thetime.
By day 4, you felt as good as new—a few bruises left but they were like small pebbles in the road.
....
You huffed in defeat as the cat curled up to Xiao's lap.
'wasn't I the one who risked my life for you?' You groaned in annoyance, but it quickly disappeared when seeing the calm expression Xiao carried. If you looked closely, you could see a very faint smile.
You smiled at the sight. "So...what do you think we should name him?"
Xiao snapped from his small trance, "why do we need to keep him?" He asked. Your brows furrowed, "I don't want him to be abandoned. I don't think he has a owner and..I don't want that guy to come after him again." You spoke softly, before smiling, "Plus, I think he really likes you."
Xiao's brows furrowed before he sighed, mumbling something.
You looked up to him, cocking a brow—curious to what he said. "What was that?"
"Qíji. His name." He muttered, looking away towards the ground.
You looked at the yaksha in slight surprise before mumbling the name. "Qíji.." You smiled before looking at the peacefully sleeping fur boy, "well then, welcome home Qíji."
Well look at that, looks like you did get Xiao something after all.

A Hot for Teacher drabble? In this economy? More likely than you think.
I was reading through HFT and found a post about genma finding naru lost in the grocery store and it possessed me
Genma Shiranui was pretty sure the brightly colored package in his hand wasn’t actually food despite its many claims otherwise.
A glance through the ingredient list found nothing recognizable as something that came from nature, and he had major doubts that anything in that shade of orange the “food” was depicted as on the front was truly edible. He tossed it in the basket with his stack of instant ramen and energy drinks and swore to Guy’s ghost (not that he was dead, but speaking to his friend’s metaphorical spirit was far less exhausting than the enthusiastic lecture on nutrition he would get in person) that he would at least grab a premade salad before he left. He had just moved down to the next probably inedible and brightly colored package of junk food screaming for his attention when he heard the sniffle.
Genma frowned, looking at the package his hand was hovering over for a heartbeat too long before realizing the sound had come from below him.
(He was still getting used to the whole “friends with single dads” thing. A part of him still wanted to look around for a responsible adult for himself, so the idea of being the responsible adult for someone else was a special kind of horrifying. That said, Genma showed up every time Guy or Kakashi needed a sitter even if the first time he had to look up how the hell he was supposed to change a diaper.)
The sight of familiar blue eyes, if bloodshot and rimmed with red from the tears that were pouring down the poor kid’s cheeks, was all Genma registered before a little body hit him with the force of a truck. His bad arm flew back to catch himself on the shelf, sending a painful twinge through his shoulder, while his good arm pulled his basket out of the way before a little head could slam into it.
“Naruto?” He managed through the pain as his brain finally caught up with who exactly the tiny bowling ball attached to his legs was. “Hey, buddy, what’s wrong? Where’s your dad?” That was, apparently, the wrong thing to ask as Naruto immediately burst into loud, body-shaking sobs.
Genma was an ex-soldier. He had stood calm under fire. He had taken a bullet and still dragged his battle buddy to safety before passing out from blood loss.
He had a full two second panic when faced with a crying toddler.
Wrenching his panicking thoughts under control with an iron grip, Genma shifted the two of them until he was kneeling in front of Naruto, abandoning his basket to pet wild blond hair and whispering soft assurances as the poor kid cried. It took a couple minutes and a few repetitions to understand the word Naruto gasped out between sobs, but Genma eventually got the gist of it by the time Naruto had calmed enough that his sobs were more hiccups.
Naruto had said he was too big for the cart, so Kakashi had allowed him to walk next to him while they shopped. Only Naruto had seen something that sparked his interest and wandered off, and by the time he remembered he had broken his promise to stay by his dad he didn’t know where in the store he was. Naruto had been looking for his dad when he had seen Genma and knew he would help.
Genma smiled and ruffled Naruto’s hair. “I’m glad you found me, kiddo. Now the two of us can find your dad, yeah?”
Fat little fists rubbed at those teary blue eyes so hard that Genma gently pulled them away for fear the kid would do some damage. “What if he’s mad?”
“Mad?” Genma asked, running gentle fingers under Naruto’s eyes to wipe away more stray tears before Naruto could start rubbing again. “Nah, he’s not gonna be mad. He’s too much of a worry wart for that.”
Naruto sniffed, and Genma mentally cursed himself for not carrying tissues as the kid ripped his nose on his orange sleeve. Some Uncle he was. “Promise?”
“I swear it, kiddo. Now c’mon, let’s find your dad.”
Genma shifted his basket to his bad arm before lifting Naruto up, settling him on his hip as he straightened from his crouch. Any discomfort from the weight on his arm was well worth it when Naruto rested his head on his shoulder. Even the thought of the toddler snot that was certainly getting wiped off on him didn’t bother him when Naruto let out a sniffly little giggle when Genma bounced him up into a more comfortable position.
It wasn’t the most comfortable carrying a still upset child in one arm while the other screamed in protest under the weight of the pitiful collection of junk that was Genma’s groceries, but Genma had been in far more uncomfortable situations. Being shot had a way of forcing perspective like that.
In the end it wasn’t hard to find Kakashi. He was tearing up the main aisle like a madman head whipping left and right as he scanned the aisles. It probably would have been funny if he couldn’t see the near panic in his friend’s eye.
“Yo! Kash!”
Kakashi’s head snapped to him so fast Genma felt a twinge of sympathy in his own neck. He barely had the time to see one dark eye widen in recognition before his friend was there, abandoned cart slamming into a shelf hard enough to make the entire thing shutter at the force in his desperation, all but snatching Naruto from his arms and burying his face in wild blond hair. Naruto, whose tears had restarted the moment he caught sight of his dad, clung to Kakashi’s shirt and wailed into the dark fabric.
The sound had attracted the eyes of the few people shopping at this hour, but a flash of a smile that was anything but friendly and a few pointed glares from Genma convinced their audience to suddenly find the nutritional facts of whatever was in their hand very interesting for the conceivable future. It was a bit harder wrangling Kakashi and Naruto down one of the side aisles, but Genma managed it. Saving the abandoned cart was far easier and had the added benefit of letting Genma put his own basket down as he steered with one hand.
Once he had all three of them tucked into the most private space he could manage in the store he turned to his friend, frowning when he caught the rapid rise and fall of Kakashi’s shoulders and white-knuckled grip he had on Naruto’s jacket.
“Hey man,” Genma paused a few feet away when he saw Kakashi’s arms tighten. Right. Grounding first and comfort later. “You’re good. The kid is good too. He’s super smart, you know. Went straight to a safe adult and asked for help. Nearly scared me half to death when I saw him there, but he was real brave. I promised him as much junk food as he wanted before bedtime, so that’s probably not the best but I would argue that’s my right as honorary favorite uncle.”
Kakashi’s snort was more than a little harsh (and wet. Ugh, Genma didn't want to think what that was like with the mask) but his death grip on Naruto’s jacket loosened a little and he managed to pull back enough to glance up at Genma through his silver bangs.
“Guy’s his favorite uncle.”
“Bullshi- cra- poop. Bull poop. Lee is his favorite cousin, and Guy is the person that makes Lee appear, that’s all.”
“Bullshit.”
“Hey! Little ears or some shit! Wait, fuck. I mean–!”
Kakashi’s huffed laugh was a welcome sound. Naruto’s muffled little giggle was even more so. Genma was batting a thousand here. “So, anyway, Favorite Uncle Genma declares that tonight is movie night complete with all the junk food we can eat without barfing. Don’t even try to argue. I know damn well you don't have anything planned for tomorrow, so all three of us are staying up past bedtime and bonding.”
It was surprisingly easy to corral Kakashi and Naruto out of the store. Kakashi hadn’t even protested when Genma had paid for all the groceries himself, which might have been because he was far too busy glaring at anyone who looked at Naruto too long like an overgrown guard dog. He also didn’t argue when Genma snagged his keys and shoved him into the passenger side after buckling Naruto into his car seat which was a mercy considering lifting Naruto up into his seat and transferring the groceries into the back had done Genma’s shoulder no favors. He’d make Kakashi drive him back to his car in the morning… or text Hayate and bribe him into using the spare key to get it home.
Thankfully, Genma was around enough that Kakashi’s pack didn’t jump him immediately after he shouldered through the door with both sets of groceries hanging off his good arm. Even better Genma actually remembered where Kakashi kept the laminated paper with all of the dogs’ dinner needs so he managed to get all eight of them fed and watered correctly without having to break up the tangled mass that was Kakashi and Naruto on the couch.
Eventually all three of them were situated on Kakashi’s singular couch (god he and Guy needed to see about getting the poor bastard more furniture that wasn't child-sized or a dog bed) with varying bowls and packages of candies, cookies, and the mystery orange monstrosity Genma had picked up at the store that Naruto loudly claimed as his favorite spread around them. There was even an age-appropriate movie droning on in the background that they all paid half attention to while hunting for their preferred snack. Sure, the amount of sugar and god knew what else all three of them were eating could hardly be considered a balanced dinner, but Genma was content in the knowledge that all three of them were fed without bloodshed or any more tears.
He was killing this whole Uncle thing.
Naruto had dropped into sleep, snoring away from his spot sprawled across both of them, when Kakashi reached one arm behind the couch and flicked something light and flat over Genma’s head. It took some shifting to free his good arm enough to peel what turned out to be a heating pad off of his face.
“You fucked up your arm,” Kakashi accused.
“A bullet fucked up my arm. I just irritated it.”
That earned him a rude gesture which was rather merciful considering Kakashi’s usual gruff sort of love. Maybe Genma should let himself be a kid mattress more often. “Well you’re damn good at it, bastard.”
Genma laughed, stilling when Naruto shifted on top of him. When he was sure his living blanket was still out he shot Kakashi a smirk. “I’m good at a lot of things, I’ll have you know.”
Kakashi’s face did something complicated. “You are. Better than me.”
Suddenly Genma wasn’t so sure they were talking about being annoying anymore. He nudged Kakashi with his socked toes and narrowed his eyes at him. “You’re a good dad, Kash. I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.”
“Even me?” Kakashi asked with a pointed look at Genma’s bad shoulder.
“I never said that I’d win the fight.” That earned him a snort, which Genma took as a win. “Seriously, Kakashi, what you’re doing is fucking hard. I can barely manage to take care of myself most days, much less a living breathing human being. Even if it wasn’t just you it would be hard. Everyone talks about how hard it is, that’s why they have those mommy groups and shit so you can drink wine and talk about how hard it is.”
“Actually they’re more–”
“See? You know! You give a fuck about your kid enough to know! This doesn’t make you a bad dad. Fuck, my old man forgot me at the store twice when I was Naruto’s age. Shit happens, and you’re the kind of smart that will figure out the leash the first time instead of the second.”
Kakashi’s kick was far gentler than it would have normally been either because the cold blooded bastard had finally grown a heart or because of the toddler still using Genma as a futon… probably the toddler. “Make all the dog jokes about me you want, but leave the kid out of it.”
Genma blinked. “I wasn’t!”
“Leash?” Kakashi pointed out with an unimpressed eyebrow.
“I was serious, asshole! They make like backpacks with fucking leashes or some shit. Better than the bracelet I had to–” Genma broke off as a thought occurred to him. Wait, hold on, you mean I was a leash kid, and Hatake ‘Dog Food Isn’t That Bad’ Kakashi wasn’t?”
Despite being friends with Kakashi for years, Genma still wasn’t entirely sure how the bastard managed to smirk with the mask hiding his mouth. What he was sure about was that it was fucking annoying to have aimed at him.
(Genma ignored the slight feeling of relief in his chest that Kakashi was back to his usual bastard self.)
“That explains so much about you.”
“Fuck off, you didn’t even know leash kids were a thing before now!”
“And yet so many burning questions about Shiranui Genma have been answered in one fell swoop!”
The renewed ache in Genma’s arm was well worth the sight of the orange monstrosity of a snack he had picked up at the store bouncing off of the skin between Kakashi’s eyes, and onto the floor. At least it was until the two of them scrambled to get out from under Naruto and to the mystery snack before one of the dogs could snatch it.
(A few days later Genma showed up at Kakashi’s door proudly showing off the orange fox harness backpack much to Naruto’s delight, firmly solidifying himself in the position of favorite uncle.)

FrUK FACE family Parent Trap AU, part 5! Part 1
Last time we left off with Alfred and Mattie going home with their other dad and Francis and Arthur none the wiser about the son switcheroo. Let’s see what happens on the Francis and Alfred side first:
During the drive to the Bonnefoy residence, Alfred has a hard time keeping a lid on his gregarious personality and playing his part as Mattie. Acting calm and sweet is so difficult when he’s desperate to talk and talk and talk and ask Francis a million questions and get to know him! It’s a struggle, I tell ya hwat. His French holds up well, though. Francis notices “Matthew” has picked up a bit of an accent, but chalks it up to his time spent at camp. Mr. Kumajiro barks all the way home until Alfred secretly feeds him some sticky jerky he got on the plane. Then Mr. Kumajiro calms down. This little pupper may be mysterious and not Mattie, but he seems alright even so. Alfred is delighted to have a dog. He’s always wanted one and now he gets to borrow Mr. Kumajiro. Lucky! Mr. Kumajiro doesn’t just get jerky but also plenty of pets on the way home.
As I mentioned earlier, the FACE family came to Quebec for an opportunity to grow Francis’s fashion business. And grow it did. Oh boy, didn’t it just! Alfred’s jaw hits the floor when he sees the size of Francis and Mattie’s house. The Kirklands aren’t poor - Arthur makes a good living as a journalist and from his books - but their apartment in NYC is nothing like this! This place is practically a mansion! And it’s not just the house but the land around it, too. There’s so much space, so much room to explore, run around with Mr. Kumajiro, and play sports! Alfred is in heaven.
He wants to go and check out the house and charge around the backyard there and then, but Francis asks him if he’d like to help him make dinner? Alfred says yes and is embarrassed at how shy he suddenly feels doing so. Alfred Kirkland is not used to feeling shy. It’s almost a foreign emotion for him and shaking it off isn’t easy. Alfred is annoyed to discover he feels shyer of Francis Bonnefoy than he ever has of anyone in his life. At least it helps in his Mattie impression, lol.
He follows Francis into their kitchen (wow! Super shiny and deluxe and no char marks! - thinks Alfred) and they chat as Francis prepares a meal and Alfred helps. He isn’t as culinarily crippled as Arthur but Francis is still surprised at how clumsily “Matthew” handles the prep. But he brushes it off. Camp was the first time Mattie was away from home longer than a few days. Being a little out of character is normal after an experience like that. They finish without major incident and sit down to eat. Alfred is distracted when he takes his first bite and oh maaaan! Instant food heaven! Bliss and angel choirs! Matthew told Alfred his (their! Their! :D) papa was a great cook, but Alfred sees now that was an understatement! Francis is obviously some kind of food superhero genius person! It’s all he can do not to wolf down the plate like a starving, well, wolf.
Francis asks Alfred how the food was at camp? Alfred tells him it was okay but nothing like this. This is so good! Francis is a pleased but a little taken aback at Alfred’s enthusiasm. Mattie is used to Francis’s cooking so it doesn’t get such a big reaction from him, though he’s always polite. They get into a conversation about cooking and proper nutrition. At first, Francis is passionate and flamboyant but then he looks wistful. Just for a moment, just for a moment after Alfred talks about junk food vs. home cooked and Francis says anyone can cook if they take the time to practice. It’s just a matter of following a recipe and choosing quality ingredients. Anyone can do it if they just…practice.
A fleeting look. Just for a moment. Then it’s gone.
Alfred didn’t miss it. And it’s a look he’s seen before, many times, but not from Francis. Heart skipping, he asks Francis if that’s really true. Did he ever know anyone who couldn’t cook no matter how hard he - they - tried?
Francis pauses and gives him an odd look. Alfred is afraid he’s messed up and said too much, but then Francis just smiles and brushes it off again. He asks if Alfred wants his dessert now? Francis already made creme brulee that morning. Alfred sees his other dad dodge the question like a pro, but decides not to pursue it. He doesn’t want to make him suspicious and blow their cover.
It’s proved one thing, at least, thinks Alfred as he digs into the creme brulee like a starving man. Mattie was right: Francis hasn’t forgotten Arthur. Not even after all this time.
“Bon?” Asks Francis as he sees his son grin into his dessert. “I tweaked the recipe again. Changed the white and golden sugar ratios. You like it?”
“Oh, yeah,” Alfred looks up with a big smile. “I really do!”
Francis is again pleased but a little taken aback at the level of enthusiasm. He’s not complaining, though. The entire point of sending his boy to camp was to help Mattie come out of his shell. Seems it worked out better than Francis hoped. Then Mattie’s “Uncle Gil” turns up unannounced (as he often does), bursts in and pounces on Alfred for a hug and a noogie. Gilbert Beilschmidt: ex-marine and local eccentric extraordinaire. Matthew told Alfred about Gilbert - who isn’t really his their uncle by blood, but rather one of Francis’s friends and Mattie has called him that since he was a baby - and Alfred couldn’t wait to meet him after some of Mattie’s stories. Crashing a parade float into a local swimming pool (don’t ask), running for mayor in assless chaps (don’t ask), building his own race cars with rockets and testing them out on the same route as the parade float (please, please don’t ask)? Guy sounds crazy awesome!
“Hey, kaulquappe! Welcome home!” Says uncle Gil as he almost scalps Alfred with his noogie. “How was camp? You show those yanky bastards who’s boss?”
“Yeah, sure!” Alfred laughs, ignoring the jibe. “You bet!”
“Haha, nice! Say…you look kinda different. Don’t you think, Fran?”
Alfred goes cold, but Francis smiles again and says:
“He’s had his hair cut. And his ear pierced. Tres chic!”
“Oh, yeaaah!” Says Gilbert. “Looks sick! Nice one, kid. Fight the power!”
Alfred hadn’t realised Francis noticed his earring already. He’s surprised that Francis seems totally cool with “Matthew’s” new look. A big contrast to Arthur, who scolded and nagged Alfred for a week when he came home with his new piercing. Then attacked Alfred’s ear with antiseptic swabs for two weeks. But Francis is obviously different. Very different.
Alfred likes Francis already. He watches him over Gilbert’s shoulder and feels joy and excitement bubble up in his belly.
He’s here now, and he has a once in a lifetime chance to get to know his papa better.
You better believe Alfred F. Kirkland is going to make the most of every minute!
(Stay tuned for part 6, where we’ll check in on Arthur and Mattie (´ε` )♡)

Cat Food Prep Time!
Since the in-laws are still away, we're going to take advantage and prep some cat food over the next few days! We'll document the whole process, so anybody who's curious about home-made food can see how it's done. It's complicated and can be time-consuming, but for us it's a great option for a cat with special needs (elderly, overactive thyroid, food allergies) and I dunno, maybe tumblr will find it interesting. Disclaimers This recipe is provided by the nutrition calculator on Balance.it for our cat's age and weight, and is compliant with AAFCO standards for pet maintenance. If you're interested in home cooking for a pet, go to Balance.it to get a custom recipe for your pet's needs. We do not raw feed, nor do we endorse raw feeding. This is an example of a fully cooked pet diet that's safe for consumption when prepared correctly. Always consult your vet before making major changes to a pet's diet, especially if your pet is sick or has allergies. We have shown this recipe to our vet, and we've made our reasons for feeding home-made (allergies, poor appetite) clear
Anyway, with that out of the way - here's our recipe for about 3 weeks worth of meals! Balance.it originally generated a recipe using turkey breast - but since Canela's allergies include poultry, instead we're using pork loin. Pork is often used in "sensitive" cat foods and is nutritionally very similar to lean chicken or turkey, so I was basically able to swap this out one-for-one in the calculator, with it making adjustments as needed. Meat usually loses about 25% of its weight when "dry" cooked (via methods like broiling) - so for this we'll need about 5.14 lbs of raw Pork Loin. Sweet Potatoes I've found tend to lose a LOT of moisture when baked, so today we'll buy about 3.5lbs of raw Sweet Potatoes, and we'll see how much we have post-cooking.
We're using human-grade ingredients here, so expect to see what we do with the leftovers too. More posts coming soon, with luck 👍

question for ya !!! do you have any recommendations on switching cats to healthier more nutritional food? i'm currently feeding mine dry food because it's the easiest to afford but i want to do better for them !! do you have any recommendations on what some good stuff to start feeding them would be? and how to make the switch easier for them?
Yes! I do! Sorry for the delay in replying to this.
So first off, cats cannot hydrate adequately from drinking water. They are built to gain hydration from intracellular moisture, meaning that the food they eat needs to have fully hydrated cells. Kibble is not only dry, but the heat used in processing severely damages its nutritional value. Wet food is better, but the moisture isn't necessarily intracellular. Often it is still processed with heat and water is added back in later.
I am a huge advocate for feeding raw food and it's much easier and more affordable than you would expect. Switching even 20% of your pets food over to something fresher (ideally raw) has a massive positive impact on their health, so it's not all or nothing.
There are two main raw "diets": BARF and Prey. Both of these are going to contain organ, muscle, and bone. BARF stands for biologically appropriate raw food. This will contain a mixture of ingredients that have great nutritional value, but would not be something the animal would find naturally in the wild. Some of my favorite ingredients mixed in are green lipped muscles, raw goat milk, blueberries, and kale! The Prey diet is much higher in protein and does not contain as many of these "forageables," digestive aids, and supplements. Prey diets are better for cat only households or for dogs that work physical jobs.
My favorite brand of raw food is Steve's Real Food, but I'm also partial to Stella & Chewy. Both of these companies offer food that can be fed both to your dog and your cat, so you can feed the household out of one bag. That being said, Steve's has begun focusing a lot more on cat food and now offers the Quest line of cat diets. It's priced comparably to wet food and is very easy to feed. They also offer guides on transitioning your cat from one food to another since they are imprint eaters and it's not always easy.
Again, it's not all or nothing! Replace 20% of their diet with a balanced raw food and you'll see a difference. The poop is better and less, the pet stays hydrated and doesn't chug water, coat quality often improve and shedding is reduced. A full raw switch also removes the kibble brain fog and may even stop your cat from barfing all the time. Raw fed pets are more alert and less stressed, in my experience.
Obviously every pet is different, but the science of how they evolved to eat is sound. It just takes some shopping around to find the right fit.

Transparency With Parrot Food Manufacturers
There's been a significant rise in the expectation of transparency between pet food manufacturers and the general public. Dog food manufacturers, for example; have AAFCO, feeding trials, and an array of nutrient digestibility charts, base nutrient expectations, and sanitary guidelines to follow which a lot of brands then openly share with the public. These standards help pet parents make more active choices in what they feed their pets, tailor their pets diet to meet their individual needs, trust that their food meets a base line of nutrition, and that the food was produced in a sanitary manner. The dog food industry is far from perfect and even these regulations have their flaws and the tests aren't without fault but it is a good base for us to compare to when we're trying to sort out what we want from other pet food manufacturers. In this case I'm focusing on parrot pellet manufacturers.
I had a few different goals heading in to this.
I wanted to see how transparent pellet manufacturers would be with sharing information that is common to ask dog food manufacturers (information is not confidential, revealing formulas, secrets, etc.)
The availability of nutrient analysis charts (breakdowns of how much of each nutrient is in their pellets)
What standards parrot food manufacturers held themselves to
If any feeding trials were performed on their pellets
And to preface this with my own bias, I am pro-pellet, I currently feed pellets.
Before we get too deep in to this let's break things down a bit.
As it stands there really aren't any regulating bodies above parrot food manufacturers as far as I could find. There doesn't seem to be much of any standards when it comes to their sanitization or product quality, the best you get is the FDA/ CFIA which basically just make sure a food isn't outright toxic. As it stands there haven't been enough studies done on parrot nutrition for there to be a governing body stating what the minimum nutrient requirements are for parrot food, we simply do not actually know what those requirements are yet so there cannot be a set standard for it. This unfortunately leaves us open to a lot of problems, if there's no nutritional requirements and no standardized testing then we're really just putting a lot of trust in to a company that wants to turn a profit. We're hoping that the food that says it's nutritionally complete is what it says with no evidence to show for it, and no science to confirm it.
So with that said no parrot food can actually claim to be "100% nutritionally complete", we do not know what nutritionally complete looks like for parrots, there is no science to back up those claims.
So I set out and emailed every parrot pellet manufacturer I could think of and asked them the some questions.
"Does your company do feeding trials? If so, is that data available to the public anywhere?"
"Do you have a nutrient profile available?"
Feeding trials are very simply a test where you feed a set of animals exclusively one diet and then monitor them to see if the food is capable of providing the base essential nutrients needed to live. Usually they do blood work, urine and fecal alongside regular physical exams to monitor things like nutritional deficiency, ailments, and nutrient digestibility. This helps show that a food is capable of providing what the target animal needs to survive without causing health problems and provides vital information on what amount of vitamins/ minerals in the produced food are actually being digested and absorbed. These tests are common among well-known dog food companies and most are more than willing to share that data to give their consumers peace of mind with easy transparency.
And let me tell you I am beyond disappointed at what happened when I asked parrot food manufacturers the exact same thing.
TOPs: No nutrient profile listed on the website, does have a detailed breakdown of why every single ingredient was added though. Happily discloses that parrot nutritional science doesn't have all the data to claim any food as 100% nutritionally complete and advises for the feeding of fresh foods in addition to their food, didn't specify exactly how much of each to maintain optimal nutrition.
I emailed them three times and never got a response back from any of them.
Harrisons: Does say you can feed 20% vegetables by weight while the pellet should be 75%, has an easily available nutrient analysis on their website.
also emailed three times with no response back.
Caitec: no nutritional analysis listed on their main website, website did not state how they want their product to be fed, product packaging states that veggies should be a treat/ addition and lists the pellet as a "complete diet".
emailed three times with no response back.
Lafeber: Primarily promotes mixed seed and pellet formulas, doesn't state any risks of parrot's selective consumption (study on that problem), does promote the feeding of fresh produce in conjunction with their formulas at 20% of the diet, no nutrient analysis on their website.
emailed three times with no response back.
Zupreem (Compana Pet Brands): did respond back but they phrased their response in a way to dance around the subject, after some pushing they confirmed they do not do feeding trials. Encourages use of fresh foods with their formula, at least 60% pelleted diet recommended. Had an extremely small nutrient profile that just skipped over the important nutrient requirements like the Ca:Ph. I asked for a nutrient profile which they did not want to provide but were able to tell me that the naturals pellets have 0.59% calcium
Roudybush: Says fresh foods can be fed but "as a minor part of the diet", does say that science doesn't have enough information to make a product tailored to each species of bird, did make changes to their formula recently to remove menadione in favour of alfalfa due to it's potential toxicity. does seem to be evolving as science progresses. Ingredients list wasn't listed on the website, nor was a nutrient profile.
did not reply to any emails.
Tropican (HARI): I was hopeful for this one by the way their website boasts about their feeding trials and research. So so hopeful.
Talks about doing feeding trials openly on their website, recommends 70% pellet to 30% fresh foods (by caloric content not weight) but mentioned that their birds eat 100% pellets. Easily accessible albeit basic nutrient profile but it covers the main things.
After my email Mr. Hagen actually ended up calling me and what I was hoping would be a motivating call ended up being very hostile. Whenever I asked questions about data or results of a feeding trial I was immediately shut down, the topic was changed, I was interrupted mid-sentence over and over again. I was able to get small tidbits of info that were as vague as "we've fed multiple generations of birds on this food" and "we do annual weigh-ins". He would casually mention data from a study he had done but then dart away if I asked for the name of the study so I could read it later. It was an extremely off-putting phone call. Completely unwilling to say how many birds were in a trial, how many years the trial went on for, if there was bloodwork or nutrient digestibility charts, nothing at all. He also casually mentioned that once the birds are old enough they get sold to stores which was very unnerving to me.
So I guess they maybe do legitimate feeding trials but they will under no circumstances offer that data to the public? I don't know. They wouldn’t provide any published articles or data to actually prove that the trials exist and I will definitely not be contacting them again to find out. They suggested I was trying to steal their formula and lying about my identity. I'm not going to try to get a simple answer out of them again.
Mazuri: recommends 20% fresh foods 75% pellets, nutrient profile available on the website.
did not reply to any emails.
Pretty Bird: Does not do feeding trials, prompt to reply, at least knew what a feeding trial was. Couldn't find feeding recommendations on the website, no nutrient profile aside from the generic guaranteed analysis having a few add-ons but still skipping on the important nutrients you'd want to know about.
Kaytee: Did not know what a Feeding Trial was. Thought I wanted samples and offered me a coupon. I had to explain to this animal food manufacturer what a feeding trial was. Unsurprisingly they do not do feeding trials. Website had no listing of a nutrient analysis. Recommended 70-90% pellets to some fresh foods. In their own published article they went over how damaging seed diets are for parrots but then they also sell seed-only diets with the ingredients they were specifically bashing in their own article. When I asked for a nutrient profile this is what I was given:
"Nutrient levels are calculated based on ingredient data, feed compendium tables and direct diet analysis. Actual levels may vary slightly due to ingredient and analytical variation."
Kaytee exact naturals cockatiel pellet:
"0.4% Calcium 0.2% Available Phosphorus (non-phytate P) 0.1% Magnesium 120 ppm Zinc 140 ppm Iron 700 IU/kg Vitamin D3"
and that's just extremely limited information. I'm glad they were willing to provide something but in comparison to some of the others it's just not a lot of data.
Psittacus: advises for the use of grit in parrots, recommends 100% pellets but says you can feed a minimum of 70% to make room for fresh foods. Their response to feeding trails was really vague: "our products have been evaluated and tested in our centre as well as collaborating centres. This information is for internal use and it is not published anywhere". Wouldn't say what tests were done or elaborate further than that in any way. I then inquired for a detailed nutrient analysis chart saying that Mia's calcium has been a bit of a struggle (since it has been), curious if their brand may have more calcium than the ones Im using now to help her out to which they replied with "our food contains the calcium levels appropriate for him/her". (you literally cannot say that, you haven't run tests on my bird, you haven't worked with my vet regarding my bird, you cannot guarantee a blanket statement like that.). They did offer me a link to this catalogue which has more detailed info on their pellets production and a more thorough nutrient analysis chart.
I am shocked by the responses I received. I am disappointed in parrot food manufacturers. I am frustrated with parrot food regulations.
I knew I wouldn't get much out of these emails since the standards for parrot food are so low but the amount of companies that just pretended not to get my emails or didn't even know what a feeding trial was is ridiculous. The amount of companies that were making claims that science can't back up, or making claims that science actually disagrees with is astounding.
The complete lack of transparency is terrifying.
#I am never doing this again#don’t ask questions to pet food companies they will try to throw you in jail#dude straight up was like WHAT WILL YOU DO WI THE THAT INFO YOURE NOT A VET???#HUH?????#feed my birds a diet that’s confirmed to be healthy for them……..#bring the data tm my vet and ask if this looks like a good option for my pets……#I will now be rethinking their diets entirely#thank you for coming to my ted talk#pellets#science
