End of The Rope: MDZS AU #8

mdzs au where the junior quartet accidentally activate a rouge cultivator's array and send themselves back in time — post-sunshot, pre-Yiling Patriarch era.

Naturally they seek out Wei Wuxian, the only person they know who might be able to undo the absurdly complex thing.

plot device sidebar: there's a massive yao carcass in the middle of the array — clearly the power source is death based. The four start taking sketches (Mostly Jingyi). Jin Ling swats at a fly, killing it. Eventual cultivation math reveals that the design was ridiculously overpowered. The inventor probably sent himself to the Neolithic era. Hopefully that's — hopefully that's what he was going for because, yeah, this was not designed for round trips. More plot from that later.

Wei Wuxian, currently drinking and pretending that he's avoiding helping with Lotus Pier's reconstruction out of arrogance instead of inability is deeply amused to receive a visit from four miscellaneous cultivators — who he should probably recognize, right? they're the same age as him, wouldn't they have fought in the campaign? I mean his memory is bad but, no his memory is probably bad enough to completely forget these guys. Whatever.

Alright so two Lans, a Jin, and some other sect (Nice guan — sect heir, maybe?) cultivators are here for his help with something important and private that only he can do (weird, but not completely unimaginable. Something too dark for upstanding cultivator's hands?). They really should go to Jiang Cheng for requests, but, eh. He'll hear them out.

They did , in fact, first seek audience with the Yunmeng Jiang Sect Leader for just that reason. They were greeted by the sect leader's sister and, well. No one had the heart to make fun of Jin Ling for stammering briefly, then turning and running away. They figured they could probably find Wei Wuxian somewhere that sells wine. It didn't take very long.

Here's the thing, Wei Wuxian thinks, staring at the four once they are assured of the room's privacy.

These guys, for all their earnest, off-hand flattery, for as much as they addressed him respectfully, could not be less impressed with him.

One second into the conversation and the Jin is ruthlessly mocking him for his corpse bride attendants with a classic Jin sneer. "What, you don't have any living friends to hang out with?" But he's really not scared, honestly, it's not just posturing, which could mean he's stupid but — also he doesn't seem super mean spirited?? Maybe's he's reading friendliness because the tone is so much like Jiang Cheng when he's joking. Kind of disturbing how similar it is. He kindof wants to ruffle his hair.

The Green one is either joining in an admittedly hilarious bit or defending Wei Wuxian? "I think it's nice! Giving the poor souls a chance to — oh, wait — is it supposed to be intimidating? Oh wow, that's kindof sad, isn't it?"

Lan One, also joining in, absolutely no trace of fear (since when were fucking Lans so at ease around demonic cultivation): "Please disregard my companions. I think it could be very intimidating, to the right sort of visitors, Senior Wei." Senior? Am I even older than you?

Lan Two, a little nervy, but also sitting down and pouring himself a drink?!?: "Kindof over the top though right? I mean, this is exactly the sort of thing you're going to be embarrassed by in —"

"Jingyi! You can't just—"

"What! I'm right! This is totally the sort of 'oh look how evil and scary I am' showmanship that he's going to look back on in 20 years and —"

If the complete and utter disregard of his reputation wasn't enough, they brought him a bribe! Spicy, edible, bribes! And wine! Lans bringing him WINE!

It's crazy, it's definitely crazy — but considering all that — he's almost prepared to believe that might actually be who they say they are, once they start explaining.

Wei Wuxian of course doesn't let them explain much — he knows just enough of time travel theoreticals to know that it either explodes horribly or doesn't actually fix your past mistakes. Until he looks over their notes and figures out what kindof time magic it is they should keep any major changes to themselves — seriously Jin you can destroy your soul with this shit. He'll erase his memory if he has to but — fuck.

He wants. He wants the future where no one's scared of him anymore, not really, not to where they can't sit and share a table with him like a normal person. Where he teaches guest lectures to little Lans and Lan Zhan apparently trusts him enough to help take care of his son as a kid (BABY LAN ZHAN SON! LAN ZHAN HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD ! WHAT A PERFECT YOUNG MASTER YOU RAISED!!") And Shije's son makes fun of him with Jiang Cheng's voice and... he wants.

Which double means they can't explain the terrible things they obviously want to tell him because damn he did not expect to live, what, 20, 30 more years?? Wow! Lan Zhan's not even married yet, and his son is probably 20, so, yeah. Lan Zhan would probably have a super long, elegant courtship — no, no don't tell me. His wife has to be perfect, for you to be such an upstanding young growth — I SAID DON'T ANSWER MY QUESTIONS DO YOU WANT TO TURN LOTUS PIER INTO A CRATER?!?!

Identity Confirmation Aside: Headcanon that Wei Wuxian can in some fashion or another do the genetic stesting thing that fierce corpse's apparently do (ala Nie Mingue's corpse in the Guanyin Temple), which is one way he 'programmed' his armies to attack certain clans and leave alone others. Mildly satisfied that drinking the Jin/Jiang blood was enough to scare them — and ugh, she seriously ended up marrying a Jin?? — okay, okay I won't insult your father! Yeesh. Identity Confirmation Aside Aside: The juniors were less freaked about him drinking blood (they've seen him do that before), and more freaked about their young (oh god is he younger than Zizhen) FLAMBOYANTLY CUTSLEEVE uncle licking Jin Ling's wrist and making WAY too intense eye contact. He was going for demonically intimidating but considering they've all seen him 'cleaning' Lan Wanjii's hands for him after getting street food it came off kindof... yeah. Jingyi gleefully plans on using this against them both at some point in the future. Jin Ling adds another bulletpoint to the Wei Wuxian specific trauma list.

What if Wei Ying turned out different? What if he had gone through much worse as a homeless child?

Heaven knows what his life was like before Jiang Fengmian found him, but it surely wasn't friendly. What if that changed him so much? The trauma ingraining itself into his brain that it becomes his main source of survival?

Yiling was a badly managed town, even the children saw that. And among the cultivation sects, none were really keen on investing their time and materials on withered soil, especially the nearest jurisdictions of Qishan Wen and Yunmeng Jiang.

That's why in Yiling, everything tagged crime can be stashed away, hidden into, escaped out of. Sects turn a blind eye to it, hell, even the previous Baron of the land didn't bother reclaiming Yiling because of its high crime rate.

It built itself up by blood money and fear, and with the Burial Mounds so close in vicinity it was much worse.

Anything and everything illegal was practically spoiled culture there.

Especially,

Especially slave traders, especially human trafficking. There was no authority to call upon, no one strong enough of a will to stop it. And so whenever Yiling hears the heart-dropping sound of golden bells chiming, the heavy hooves of a bull that carries with it a large wooden cage. They do nothing.

They can do nothing.

And there goes A-Ying, freshly orphaned, still getting a hang of wandering around the streets he would have to call his new home.

The first time it happened, his face got too close to the torch while he panicked. The large men and their ropes scared him too much and he wanted them to let go let go let go-

They didn't like how he moved around too much and tightened the noose around his neck, A-Ying suddenly couldn't breathe. He felt the bones of his weak throat cave on itself and it hurts. It hurts. It hurts. It hurt so bad. It made him thrash around the cage widely, using his remaining air to scream so violently that would have guaranteed his broken throat.

In his panic attack he hit his head on the splintered pole used as a torch on the corner of the cage they threw him in.

A-Ying didn't think he had the strength to scream about it, but apparently he did. He realized later that the graining sound against his ears were his blood-curdling cries, and that he couldn't feel the left side of his head.

They never took him, in the end. The slave traders complained loudly that he damaged himself and would be of no value. The large man who tied him up, held him by his hair and threw him out of the cage.

After that it was black.

You'd think that after that experience, Wei Ying would have known how to escape people like these then.

He should have died. He should have died a long time ago. When the slave traders lured him in with promise of a meal, when a drunk man mistook him for someone else and beat him with shattered wine jars, when a cultivator feigned kindness and Wei Ying took his hand--

So when a man comes to him, on a cold winter night calling his name-- he can't be blamed.

(That was used on him several times, several ways, at this point the whole world knows his name. Maybe they were never addressing him really? And it's just so his foolish brain responded to every call hoping it was a-niang or baba who came back to get him.--

Hoping. He was hoping. Such a silly thing to do these days.)

The man wore purple robes, was surrounded by many people with purple robes. One of them approached when he didn't respond.

Wei Ying was 11 by now, 12 almost, he couldn't be blamed.

The robes were different-- a dark royal hue, but it was the same color of the- the same- and the man was approaching him too quickly he-

A child was never supposed to go through this pain. Wei Ying wouldn't know this, but he couldn't be blamed. A small tooth-dagger was plunged into the cultivator's abdomen and the man shrieked--- he couldn't be blamed.

He ran and ran and ran, the man who called his name ran after. His feet didn't acquaint well with the cold solid ground, it burned his skin ironically, but he ran with only fear to power him.

The man grabbed him by the shoulder and said his name again-- Wei Ying couldn't hear anything amongst the rapid beating of his own heart. Couldn't see quite clearly, couldn't think quite straight, he feared.

Wei Ying couldn't have been blamed. When carriage wheels screeched to a halt but it was too late-- and the man in purple had to let go of him one way or another.

He didn't stay too long to see what happened to him. He just ran and ran and ran.

Until there was no ground to run on. Until Yiling was no longer seen. Until he felt the last of his breath stolen from him.

Wei Ying falls falls fall-

His eyes close on their own, they can't be blamed.

catxian was, is an asset to yunmeng jiang sect.

when he was adopted, he was scrawny and undeveloped, and it took a while for him to look like a healthy child of his age but they got there.

wei wuxian liked to be petted either as cat or human, and can, and will, bite or slap your hand away when after he had enough. he loves his shijie lap the most, her hands are always soft and gentle, making him purr loudly.

madam yu liked to put him as a cat in her lap when dealing with difficult people, or when she just didn't like them (almost everyone), making him be still and staring eerily at them as she caressed his back slowly and menacingly.

(he was a black cat, after all, something passed down from his father)

jiang shushu liked to play with him as a cat a lot, and mostly away from the public eye, tossing a ball or dragging a ribbon with a content smile on his face every time wei wuxian acted like a true cat.

wei wuxian looked extremely small beside his sect mates when they were in their animal forms - all jiangs were tigers nevertheless how far from the main family they were, and most of the disciples were big animals.

and although wei wuxian was a very friendly cat who loves cuddles and scratches and petting, he definitely does not want any stranger touching him, often turning aggressive.

all the jiang disciples present were as shocked as one could be when they saw their da-shixiong headbutting lan wangji's feet on the first day of classes in the cloud recesses, purring loudly and happily when the young master used his finger to scratch between his ears.

who was lan wangji, after all, to say no to such a cute creature? even more when he cuddled and bathed the bunnies him himself gave as gifts to lan wangji.

the only one not amused at all was lan qiren. he was forced to follow the "love all animals" rule but, if he was honest, or not a lan, he would say he hates cats the most.

(especially because cangse sanren was a white cat herself - the reason behind wei wuxian white paws)

the nie disciple’s robes were so bloodstained, they had almost become black. there was no smooth landing from the polearm. he tumbled, flopping on the dirt and coughing - hacking. more crimson droplets stained his lips. yangquan was a trap. he never doubted zewu-jun’s intel, but the thought of them being led astray by the mysterious informant made his blood run cold.

hejian was closest, or qinghe itself. it would’ve been safest for him to flee there. but the front at langya needed to know. his face stung from tears and still troubling wounds being rubbed into the dirt.

nie mingjue was captured. he’d been taken by the wens. he and a few other senior cultivators. zhao xiang had barely managed to escape - barely managed to survive his injuries.

his vision was going blurry from exhaustion and pain. purple robes. jiang sect. a bloody hand gripped what he estimated to be the cultivator’s arm.

❝ chifeng-zun, ❞ zhao xiang rasped, unable to find the energy to put together a coherent sentence, ❝ the wens… chifeng-zun… yangquan. ❞

Finally, something is going right.

The Yunmeng Jiang disciples have been trained up hastily, so they can't compare to those of Lanling Jin or Qinghe Nie; but Yunmeng doesn't breed cowards or weaklings, so despite their minimal instruction they hold well against the dogs of Qishan Wen. (Jiang Cheng dislikes that the Four Great Sects have settled for that term asn an insult. Dogs are reliable, friendly, and loyal. Nothing like Wen Ruohan and his get.)

Of course, it's himself and Wei Wuxian who defined the lines of the Jiangling front, and it's them who gather honour and glory with both hands at the Langya front. Where Zidian crackles, Wens crumple- and where Chenqing sounds, Wens scream in terror. His brother is different now- quieter, less cheerfully teasing and more jadedly mocking, but who hasn't changed since Wen Ruohan overstepped everyone's boundaries? Jiang Cheng certainly has.

But he hasn't changed enough that his blood wouldn't run cold at the sight of the messenger. He breaks from the lines, Zidian crackling to life in case he has been followed, and bursts into a run to join his friend. When Zhao Xiang grips his arm with a force born from desperation rather than strength, Jiang Cheng puts his other arm around him to keep him standing.

Zhao Xiang can only spit out a few words alongside the blood that should have definitely stayed inside him, but alongside his wounds and the fact that Zhao Xiang would never leave his guardians behind if he had any sort of choice, it's not hard to piece together his message. Jiang Cheng turns, his eyes meeting Wei Wuxian's- and the older cultivator nods sharply before turning and leaving, to find a higher-ranked commander (or animate a corpse to do it for him, probably) to pass on the message. Jiang Cheng stays with their friend, supporting him as he drags him into the Langya camp. "You're okay, I've got you. Let's get you fixed up."

This is not gonna be a Jiang Cheng bashing post, imo, but it will be a JC critical one.

I’ve read the novel, but not watched any of the shows. So if I say something that doesn’t line up with the shows, but does with the novel, that’s why. That’s where I am pulling from.

So anyway, I like Jiang Cheng. Fanon Jiang Cheng, where he’s a tsundere angry grape.

Canon Jiang Cheng is someone that constantly yells and screams, threatens violence, IS violent, is a serial torturer/killer, and is just. Not a pleasant person to be around. Pretty sure he is kind of a shitty sect leader too, I seem to recall an innkeeper talking about how he never goes on night hunts unless someone dies? Ugh.

I honestly do not see how you can have a yunmeng bros reconciliation with canon Jiang Cheng. I don’t LIKE to have a reconciliation with canon JC, to me it lessens WWX’s character to have him make friends again with someone who WHIPPED AND TORTURED people for thirteen years. Maybe if you go for a canon divergence early, at the cloud recesses or maybe even the Xuanwu. Once he strangled WWX for, you know, having the absolute GALL to be alive when his parents were dead though? That’s pretty much the end for me, I can’t stand the guy after that, unless that’s what shocks him into realizing that he is in fact a terrible person and needs to act better.

Oh but he has trauma and his sect was just destroyed and his parents died! And? LXC had that happen and he didn’t strangle Wangji. Vice versa. They are brothers.

Not to mention him constantly threatening Jin Ling. Hated that the whole time too. Hecking awful. Canon JC is a terrible man.

Fanon JC is awesome and some people write him great and I can really enjoy stories where he is tsundere and not actually hateful. Where he realized his family is kinda toxic and treats WWX better.

Just…I hate post canon fics that take canon JC and then try to patch the relationship up and WWX and JC turn into friendly loving brothers. It just doesn’t work for me.

Okay I’m done. I don’t feel like arguing with internet strangers but I know that Jiang Cheng is a controversial topic sometimes so if you wanna go off, that’s fine. But like…maybe provide evidence other than ~he had trauma~ because so did literally everyone and the only other person to kill a sibling was Jin Guangyao.
