Hello! I was wondering you could help me with a translation into Sumerian?
I piece of writing I'm doing uses the word akhkharu in the source material for 'blood demon' or 'vampire' and I was wondering if you knew the symbol for it?
And how to properly translate with it for 'Queen of the Vampires' or 'Vampire Queen'. Nin akhkharu is what I've been able to find, but I'm not certain that's correct and cannot find the corresponding cuneiform.
These are the best pictures of the symbol that was used for akhkharu in the source, and I've been having trouble finding the same symbol. (There is also a chance that this shot is backwards, as the person reading the symbol is in the background and the symbol is in the foreground)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi! This is not Sumerian and not cuneiform. "Akhkharu" is a modern made-up word, invented circa 2008 by an occultist author, and does not conform to Sumerian phonetics or orthography at all. The symbol you've linked to here isn't a cuneiform sign and doesn't follow standards of cuneiform sign-shapes.
There is no concept of "vampire" in Sumerian literature or culture as far as I've ever found. (I've answered a previous ask here on how to potentially say "blood drinker" or other workarounds.) Any references to "Sumerian vampires" or such a thing are the invention of modern authors, not based in actual ancient Mesopotamian texts or cultural sources.
Thank you for reaching out and checking rather than further spreading this kind of misinformation - I appreciate it! If you'd like help with authentic Sumerian translations, please do message and let me know.

In case you ever get disheartened about learning Sumerian (or any other language), remember - it takes a native speaker 9000+ hours of immersion study to learn it!
A textbook called Grammatical Theory by Stefan Müller just came out, and man, he's dropping some truth bombs!
Tumblr media
Furthermore, the claim that first language acquisition is effortless and rapid when compared to second language acquisition is a myth as has been shown by estimations by Klein (1986: 9): if we assume that children hear linguistic utterances for five hours a day (as a conservative estimate), then in the first five years of their lives, they have 9100 hours of linguistic training. But at the age of five, they have still not acquired all complex constructions. In comparison, second-language learners, assuming the necessary motivation, can learn the grammar of a language rather well in a six-week crash course with twelve hours a day (500 hours in total).
And then...
Tumblr media
In Chapter 13, it was shown that all the evidence that has previously been brought forward in favor of innate linguistic knowledge is in fact controversial. In some cases, the facts are irrelevant to the discussion and in other cases, they could be explained in other ways. Sometimes, the chains of argumentation are not logically sound or the premises are not supported. In other cases, the argumentation is circular. As a result, the question of whether is innate linguistic knowledge remains unanswered. All theories that presuppose the existence of this kind of knowledge are making very strong assumptions.
In short: Human linguistic abilities aren't magic, and children aren't elves.

I often get questions about zodiac signs or other constellations in Sumerian - the signs weren’t solidified until after Sumerian was no longer in active use. But you can check out my Sumerian astronomy tag for what I’ve found dating back that far, if you like!

Cuneiform tablet with incised drawing of constellations: the Lion (Leo) and the Dragon (Draco)
Uruk (Warka), Seleucid period, 2nd century BCE
Mesopotamian astral science and astrological divination saw major developments in the 6th century BCE with the canonization of the zodiacal signs. Instructions for how to draw constellations exist from as early the Neo-Assyrian period (8th-7th century BCE). From the era of Hellenistic Greek occupation of Babylonia comes this fragment of a tablet (another fragment depicting the tail of the dragon and the constellation Virgo is in the Louvre), an early piece of scientific illustration, with the constellation names labeled in cuneiform Akkadian.

Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating

Have you ever seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ARRP5i2nw8 (I can' tell if it's sumerian or akkadian, I'm sorry, and with the story's history, probably akkadian)? It's an entire concert of the epic of Gilgamesh recited in sumerian/akkadian. It's amazing
Hello, and I have seen this concert video! This version isn't in Akkadian (the original language of the epic) but is a modern translation by Azrié into Arabic. Though not in the original language, it's still amazing to see such an ancient work performed today!

Quick drawing of Inanna in a warlike mood for pride, because with the flood of political attacks agains trans people across the world, it is closer to how I'm feeling than anything along the lines of "Happy Pride Month"

You woke up feeling ridiculously melancholic. Tomorrow V was supposed to leave for tour with the boys, you didn’t want him to leave, ofcourse. That was your man, and you were gonna do everything in your power to stop him from leaving-
“Stop thinking about it.”
His voice breaks you out of thought, you were currently perched on the end of the bed in your undergarments. You two had a heated night last night, and were too exhausted to put clothes on.
You shake your head, mumbling a soft “i’m not.” he sighs, shifting to sit next to you. “Ill be back before you even know it.” he says, kissing your warm shoulder. You shrug him off.
“Don’t be like that, love.”
You glare at him, a soft pout gracing your lips.
“Lose the attitude.” he grumbles, gripping your chin.
Your brows furrow, instinctively you turn away from him. His hand reaches for your neck, pulling you back to him.
His head dips down to kiss your soft lips, tightening when your head chases his. Its a clash of teeth and moans. He pulls away, running his thumb along your bottom lip.
“Let me show you…”
He drags you up the bed by your hips.
“How much i love you.”
______________________________________
His hips snap up against yours, agonisingly slow. He was doing a great show of making love to you, savouring every moment. You whine, frustrated at the lack of movement.
“m’ sorry baby.. You feel sooooo good.” he breathes out, head nestled into the side of your neck, small kisses pressing up to your jaw.
You tug on the soft tufts of his hair, craving- no. needing more. “Fucking hell v. pick up the pace” you hiss, trying to work yourself up and down his cock.
“I love it when you wear these.” he groans, fiddling with the strap of the emerald green bra you were wearing. “So fuckin pretty.” he whispers, watching the bra fall away from your skin. He had pulled your matching thong to the side in a hurried, horny, frenzy.
He picked up the pace, the room filling with skin slapping and moans.
Fuck.
Neither of you were gonna last long after this.
He pressed soft kisses down the valley of your breasts, basking in the scent of your skin. The smell of your moisturiser making him dizzy, sending the blood in his body straight down to his dick.
He made quick work flipping you over, driving his cock in and out, shoving a pillow beneath you.
“So fucking pretty.” he breaths out, head next to your ear. “All fucking mine.”
He lets out a guttural moan as his hips begin to stutter.
“Mm… fuck im gonna cum-”
He makes an absolute mess of himself, biting onto the skin of your shoulder as he releases. He collapses against you, panting heavily. But oh no, he wasn’t finished with you.
“Turn over. Gonna make sure you savour every drop.”
He presses kisses from your soft tummy down each thigh, leaving bite marks. He gently fingers you, savouring the feeling of your insides.
“Fuck.. all this just for me?”
Your head is thrown back into the pillows, a mess of moans.
His pace quickens, his other hand coming to rub up on your clit. Your whole body shakes with pleasure, strings of moans leaving your mouth. He admires you from down below, watching the sweat trickle down the valley of your breasts, and how your core shudders.
“You gonna send me photos….
His fingers work quickly to make a mess of you.
“And videos huh?” he says, watching his knuckles bury deep within you. He pauses when you don’t respond. You whine immediately, trying to work yourself up and down his fingers. He holds your hips down.
“Answer me.” he snaps, gripping your thighs tightly.
“I promise.” you whine out. His head dips down, you were NOT gonna last long. He pulled orgasm after orgasm out of you, using his tongue and finger combined to eat you out in the most substantial way. Your body shook of overstimulation, your hands struggle against his as you try to push him away from your clit. “V-” you cry out, “cmon baby, just one more. I promise.” he whispers against your skin, you whimper and cry. “Cmon, sweet girl, i’ll take care of you.”
That nickname was enough to snap the coil building inside you. He works you through your final orgasm, kissing your swollen lips.
“Shh… shh.. You’re okay.” he whispers, holding you as you shake. He wipes the tears from your eyes, holding you together.
“Did you like that?” he whispers, pulling you close to him in the dark.
You nod, panting.
“I like being able to take you apart and put you back together.”
_______________________________________________
“You still mad…?” he asks, after gently cleaning you up and fetching you water. You shake your head. “Just gonna miss you.”
He frowns, pulling you impossibly close.

NIRAH
Nirah brings a message from the watchful sky. He arrives at the gates of Nippur with torment in his heart. “I can see the future,” he tells the very first woman. “Your kind will destroy everything.”
The men go to war as civilisation falls apart—the very first lesson in history. The first time there was ever a mistake.
Is it just a coincidence that the messenger was a snake?

The Sumerians were the people of southern Mesopotamia whose civilization flourished between c. 4100-1750 BCE. Their name comes from the region which is frequently – and incorrectly – referred to as a “country”. Sumer was never a cohesive political entity, however, but a region of city-states each with its own king. Sumer was the southern counterpart to the northern region of Akkad whose people gave Sumer its name, meaning “land of the civilized kings”. The Sumerians themselves referred to their region simply as “the land” or “the land of the black-headed people”. The Sumerians were responsible for many of the most important innovations, inventions, and concepts taken for granted in the present day. They essentially “invented” time by dividing day and night into 12-hour periods, hours into 60 minutes, and minutes into 60 seconds. Their other innovations and inventions include the first schools, the earliest version of the tale of the Great Flood and other biblical narratives, the oldest heroic epic, governmental bureaucracy, monumental architecture, and irrigation techniques. After the rise of the Amorites in Mesopotamia, and the invasion of the Elamites, Sumer ceased to exist and was only known through references in the works of ancient writers, including the scribes who wrote the biblical Book of Genesis. Sumer remained unknown until the mid-19th century CE when excavations in Mesopotamia unearthed their civilization and brought their many contributions to light.
