I hate batman. A lot. I want to tear that man down, bit by bit. I want to write a story where he tries to kill the rest of the justice league in a paranoid haze, and then has to face consequences. I want him gone. Dead. Forever erased from existence. We keep the villains and maybe the supporting cast. We ditch him. We have to. He is one of my least favourite superheroes. He's always boring! So goddamn boring! I will preach until I'm dead: Get rid of batman!
Ditch the darkness! Give us more Superman and Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel/Shazam. DC should go back to their repository of old heroes, but leave batman the hell alone. Replace him with Wesley Dodds or something if we have to! But leave batman alone! Forever!

One thing that I absolutely love about TFOne's writing is that it manages to avoid a lot of the heavier criticism I've seen regarding MegOp's hero/villain dynamic over the years (trust me, the mid-2010s TF discourse was crazy)
*Spoilers Below*
First of all, the narrative benefits so much from the main 4 cast members all being a part of the same exploited mining class. So many takes on MegOp have Orion being of a higher status (an archivist, a cop, etc) while Megatron is much lower down on the social latter (a miner, a gladiator, often in the context of being a slave).
I've seen many people be put off by this, because it feels as if Megs is being villianized for being rightfully angry at the system that deeply harmed and exploited him, while Orion/Optimus is praised for taking a more pacifistic stance despite him not suffering as much from or in some ways even benefiting from the system he claims to oppose. I don't find their dynamic to be as simple as that, and I do find these takes to be a bit reductive, but I do very much see where they are coming from.
I am definitely one of those people who's very frustrated with the way pacifism is hailed as the one true path of morality, and the inherent implication that taking any sort of revenge on the people who abused/exploited you makes you just as bad as them. Also, Marvel's particular brand of demonizing any form of radical political action, despite the system clearly being broken and corrupt, but being completely unwilling to offer any other alternatives to meaningfully change things for the better.
When looking at what I described above its pretty easy to see how a lot of versions of MegOp's hero/villain dynamic unfortunately fits into that trope. Bringing it back to TFOne, you can see how Op and Meg coming from the same political/social status subverts this. The existence of Elita and Bee only further illustrates that out of the 4 people of the mining class who were all deceived, exploited, and literally mutilated in the same way it is only D-16 that completely loses himself to his rage, even to the point where he loses compassion for his own companions and disregarding the safety of the other miners (when he decides to "tears everything down" and Elita exclaims he's going to "kill everyone").
What I think I love most about the characterization in TFOne is that Orion is the radical one. Not only that, but he is praised by Elita and by extension the narrative for it. He is constantly challenging authority, and is the first to have the suspicion that their society is structured in an unjust way.
Meanwhile D-16, to be frank, is kind of a bootlicker. He fully believed in the system and that Sentinal Prime, as someone with power, had the right to decided "what was best" for those who are weaker/lesser (I wish I had the specific quote from D-16 to support this, but the movie's still in theaters). It illustrate that D-16 already held certain fascistic ideals, and that he and Orion already have fundamentally opposing moral/political values, it simply hasn't been of any consequence yet. It shows that their eventual falling out was inevitable, even if they had decided to rebuild Cybertron together.
It should also be noted that D-16's feelings of anger and betrayal do not necessarily have anything to do with the unjust system itself, but that said unjust system was predicated on a lie. Hence his fixation on deception in the post-credits scene and him naming his faction the Decepticons. Meanwhile, when Orion learns the truth he's just sort of like "yeah, I always kinda knew something was up" because again, he understood on some level that their system was predicated on injustice.
Even D-16's obsession with Megatronus Prime, while initially an endearing aspect of his character, is also an indicator of the questionably large amount of value he puts on one's strength. It foreshadows the "might makes right" ideology that the decepticons follow, and is a key part of their ideological characterization across continuities.
Instead of the narrative we often see in Transformers media were Optimus is idolized by the narrative for being more moderate and Megatron is villiainized for being radical (or so people often claim), it is instead Optimus who is rewarded and praised by the narrative for being radical, and Megatron who is villainized and punished by the narrative for holding potentially fascistic values.
I do agree with some criticism I've seen that the whole thing with killing Sentinel and D-16's final turn into villainy felt a bit rushed and more than a little cliche, but I also understand it both had a limited runtime and that it is ultimately a family film meant to be accessible to children. More importantly though, I think the movie set the groundwork early on that, no matter how this final act played out, D-16 was always going to turn to darkness, and Orion would not have been able to stop him.
Its perfectly tragic, the way all MegOp should be, while also feeling really well thought out from a thematic standpoint. I love it.

I’ve said before Transformers has struggled recently with its villains and recent material doesn’t change this.
Ever since this happened…
We’ve largely been stuck with poor man’s Vegeta Megatron.
And as such the series has lost its main villain, and become directionless.
The modern version of this trend started with Rescue Bots & RiD15, but it made sense in their respective series, and the replacement villains were treated like actual villains and are fondly remembered because of that.
It’s also not the first time Megatron was succeeded in leadership, as the Marvel Comics did this shockingly frequently.
With RatBat being the most unique case, in that he was the only one who largely succeeded in his efforts, and was a result of sincerely wanting to try something different.
I think that sincerity is long gone in favor of brand stagnation and “DEI” despite the later going out the door as of typing.
The usual replacement tends to be Galvatron, often depicted as an evolved Megatron through mystical means.
But Hasbro seems very reluctant to use Galvatron lately for whatever reason, instead usually having him as a (technically) separate character if he does show up.
Cyberverse kinda shows the current problem two fold. The bad writers convinced themselves they wrote a sympathetic Megatron when the writing shows him to still be certifiably insane and going through what is essentially an on the nose bad break up with Optimus. This extended to Megatron somehow being worthy of using the Matrix, and able to use it, despite Decepticons never typically being able to, and imply Optimus isn’t worthy of the Matrix, but never follow up on it.
To convince themselves and the audience that the regular CV Megatron was still a good person despite his atrocities, the writers pulled an Archie Sonic, and brought on their own Robo-Robotnik in Megatron X.
He too is apparently worthy of the Matrix and able to use it, despite completely destroying Cybertron and most, if not all, of its non Perfectcon inhabitants.
(To be fair, the idea of a Decepticon being able to use the Matrix goes back to Marvel G1 Thunderwing, but his actions helped corrupt the Matrix, creating the Dark Matrix Creature, but Cyberverse never states this is the case at all. This isn’t really a popular concept the series goes back to either, making Cyberverse the outlier.)
This ties back to Hasbro’s reluctance on Galvatron, as X was originally supposed to BE Galvatron in a Marvel G1 homage, but Hasbro said no.
So we’ve been left with a weird, but non committed, experimental phase of trying out different Villians to less than stellar results…
(Mandroid and Scourge are pretty good villains, but Mandroid quickly succumbed to bad writing, & Scourge was fairly quickly killed off, with no clear intent to go back to the Terrorcons and have a Movie Cyclonus based on the Armada version to take Scourge’s place.)
This feeds back into fan complaints about Hasbro’s unwillingness to try new things I’ve seen recently. In context the complaint was more wanting another Beast Wars like thing with new factions and new non G1 characters.
Like we HAVE been getting that with the Terrans and Terrorcons, but it’s clear kids aren’t that interested in them, and adult fans are as fickle as ever and not supporting it super well either. TFONE is pry the most damning, where it’s doing poorly across the planet theatrically, despite trying a new non-evergreen art style, and a much better version of Aligned/IDW caste system that simplifies it to Cogs & Cogless.
It’s not for lack of trying, but it’s also not grabbing kids well either.
This weird flip flopping recently came into play with Galactic Trials, the crappy looking racing game.
The game casts Nemesis Prime as the main villain, who tried to steal the relics of the Primes, but fail and cast the Chaos Emeralds, er, relics across the galaxy.
Here’s the weird part: this happens before the Great War began, with the Autobots and Decepticons now finding out in the present and scrambling to collect the relics for themselves. The story isn’t expanded and confuses things. Nemesis typically isn’t even a Prime, but a Decepticon clone of Optimus. Barring a few exceptions, the main deviation this MIGHT be referencing is IDW Nova Prime, who briefly became Nemesis Prime, powered by a Matrix like relic from the Dead Universe.
So does that mean in this universe the Matrix chose a guy literally named Nemesis to be Prime? Is this actually supposed to be Nova Prime via IDW? Is this Orion Pax’s black sheep of the product line? So many questions this game isn’t going to answer.
This is the frustrating part about all this. I like that they’re trying to branch out still, and I liked Nemesis Prime in IDW and back when he was Scourge in RiD01, but…
He’s kinda pointless here.
Why are we using a “new” character for a failing on launch, not-mobile game, when the plot would be much simpler in that Megatron or Starscream raided the vault of the Primes only for Optimus to intervene and launch the relics into space. Why is Nemesis the villain? For that matter, since it’s a racing game, shouldn’t the Stunticons be the villains?
This is where CyberWorld might be the make or break now.
I think slowly but surely, Hasbro is recognizing their past ideas on overusing antihero Megatron isn’t working, and that they need to properly commit to a successor if they don’t want Megatron to be a villain anymore.
Going by toy leaks, it appears they’ve decided to go BACK to Galvatron proper, but they also include Scorponok, who’s typically cast as a leader in some capacity (excluding Beast Wars).
(Until we learn more, I’m leaning towards their roles being similar to Superlink’s.)
So I think that’s a step in the right direction so far; going for Skybound’s aim of familiar but, they’re willing to pivot under better writing.
I think that’s where TFONE D-16 doesn’t work as a concept.
Like it if not, casual audiences and kids aren’t that invested in the idea of a wide eyed good boi Megatron who fell from grace or wants to redeem.
They want these kinds of power hungry megalomaniacal Megatrons, who are willing to go the extra mile just to upstage Optimus to stroke their own ego. Not high school bosom buddies with gay lover subtext that Stereotypical Tumblr-Twitter wants. And hopefully with what we’ve seen with Skybound, we’re going back to that Megatron soon. And if we don’t go back to Megatron strictly, then Galvatron might be the way to go cartoon wise.

~~~ batman CC spoilers ~~~
Honestly this is the best DC project in years and a return to everything that was good about the og animated series whilst including all the elements of DC cannon that have been created or expanded upon since.
Just a few of my favorite things:
- the SETTING, going back to the 40s noir vibe is a perfect choice, the fights are beautiful and not overcomplicated by gadgets and tech, also allows for some gratuitously beautiful shots that play with shadow.
- batman's age, I don't think Bruce is ever given an age in the show but he seems to be mid 20s early 30s and still an urban legend as the batman, we don't have to waste time with an origin episode/season but we still get to experience a Gotham who doesn't fully trust their vigilante.
- VILLIANS, for me the stand out was harley quinn, divorcing her from the joker allows her character to fully shine, she stays somewhere in the grey but still firmly an antagonist. It's one of the gripes I have with new harley that once she leaves the joker she always becomes more of an anti-hero/hero, keep my girl villainous. Also her psychological background is in full swing, I've always believed Harley is most dangerous when she's in your head and the show leans fully into it. Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss indeed.
- villians pt.2, keeping the theme of the animated series we have our villians for villainy antagonists like penguin and thorn who seem to live on in their counterparts, onomatopoeia and firebug, but we also get nuanced character arcs for 2-face, Natalia and clayface, echoing baby doll and calender woman.
- supporting cast, I'm only familiar with the comics in passing but if attorney Barbra is a new invention then whoever thought of it needs a raise. Also aging her up to be in her early 20s is an incredible change from the animated series where she floated around the freshly 18 mark. It makes her a hero in her own right even if she isn't batgirl (yet), and let's us see Gothams worst and how she's already fighting for change.
- Supporting cast pt.2, Montoya! My beloved, I'm not sure where her romance with harley is going but I can't wait, it's great to see such an archetypal noir cop, even more so than Jim, who speaking of I love as well, his want to protect the city but also butting heads with barbie on methods is perfect characterization in my option.
-baby bruce, horrifying, I love him. Alfred has personal beef with harley now, the second he saw an opportunity to throw that man in therapy she gives him valid paranoia of the entire profession just as he was thinking about trying it properly, I know it's on sight for him going forward.
- art, I've binged the animated series many times at this point and it's a running gag in the fandom that some frames are ... unique. Obviously the animators were working with what they had, but the step up in fight choreography and flow is spectacular, the whole show is a love letter to old batman with a new varnish of the animation productions of today.
Overall an amazing show that had me laugh and gasp in equal amounts, it took itself seriously in a way most superhero media won't do anymore, I distinctly thought in ep.9 when batman swings away from Montoya and Jim "wow they didn't put in a stupid snark about him being dramatic or having a nice ass ect" and it's like a breath of fresh air.
As far as nitpicks go I wished we had more of Bruce in isolation, or having real conversations, but I realize the focus of this season was his loneliness and how the final episode states he's opening up more to the 3 main supporting characters. I'm also worried for how important the joker might become but that's basically instinct at this point (please kill him off, i want to see the reactions).
Going forward I can't wait to see if we get any follow up on the Easter egg characters, killer croc, the 4 Robin's, king tut. I'd love to see the batman as a dad he's got a lot of kindness modern adaptations don't include, but still that overwhelmingly lonely nature. I'm hoping harley and the joker never cross paths in this universe but I won't hold my breath and I'd like to see if we will get a batgirl/oracle storyline as well.
Anyways looking forward to the confirmed second season, and if you read this without watching the show, start now.
Spider-Man NWH Au Idea
The Phantom Thieves fails to change Shido's heart and Shido somehow accidentally dies. But before dying Shido makes a video to the public telling everyone Joker's true identity and framing him for his death.
Now everyone starts hating on Akira and blaming him for Shido's death. All the PTS gets backlashed by the public as well for being friends with Akira. Akira's life is no longer normal anymore.
So, he goes to the one person who could help. Going to the velvet room Akira asks Lavenza to help him, so Lavenza casts a spell that will make everyone forget Akira is Joker. But the spell gets interputted midsection.
Because of this spell mistake every villian from different universe comes in the present to destroy Joker because he's a wildcard. Villains like Nyx, Izanami, Strega, Ameno-sagiri.
Akira now has to fight all of them along with the phantom thieves. Akira also learns that Goro survived the engine room. So, now he joins the Phantom thieves again to work together on this situation.
But still with so much manpower they couldn't stop the villains. Until the other two wildcards show up Minato Arisato and Yu Narukami in the present world. All three wildcards decide to work together and stop the villains from taking over the world. The Phantom Thieves also support and help them.
In the end the three wildcards and the PTS are able to stop and reform the villains, But Lavenza comes back to tell them that there are still more foes out there to get Akira because of the spell and the only way to stop this spell is to make everyone forget that Akira even existed in their lives.
Akira agrees to this request for the sake of saving the world. Akira says goodbye to the other two wildcards as they go back to their own world along with the reformed villains.
Akira also says goodbye to the PTS saying that they will all forget about him, this pisses Goro off as he finally admits that he loves Akira. Akira is both shocked and happy to hear that. Akira wanted to say the same sentence back to him. But Goro tells him to find him and tell him again after when he forgets about Akira. Akira agrees and they share a long goodbye kiss.
Two weeks later, Akira visits Goro to reintroduce himself to him and the PTS but he decides against it feeling that he would put them in danger if they remembered him again.
In the end Akira decides to carry on as Joker and remain a mystery to the public.
While Sing 3 is still developing can you think of the 5 things you want to see in that movie and the 5 thing you don’t wanted?
Thank you so much for the ask and I'm sorry for the delay in answering. I hope you enjoy and this properly answers your question! - <3 Gooseless
----------------------------
Ok so, I'm personally a bit of a skeptic on if Sing 3 will come out soon (or ever at this point) due to the strikes likely halting all work on it. And obviously, if they worked through the strikes, I will not be supporting the movie in the slightest due to my pure hatred of crossing picket lines for no good reason and AI being used as studios want it to be. However, I do have serval things I do want to see if/when it comes out and a ton of stuff I don't.
Things I want to see (Please Illumination, Please):
Rynny being confirmed. That should surprise none of you. This blog was started as, and still primarily is, as Rynny ship blog. I love those two so much together and I feel like it would complete Johnny's queer allegory storyline very well (ie. familial acceptance, wider community acceptance, personal acceptance by allowing yourself to be yourself). My mutual have been spammed with numerous songs that I have choreographed duets to for these two already and I would just absolutely love to see it.
Noodlemoon being confirmed. I am very vocally a Noodlemoon truther and I adore those two together. Buster's chaos to Eddie's chill would work so well and it makes the most sense for me when it comes to potential partners for either of them.
More scenes of the troupe being a family. They act like a family already and I love the snippets we see, but I would love to see more of their group dynamic. Like Mrs. Crawly is essentially Johnny's grandma at this point, Rosita being the troupe mom, Gunter being a chaotic uncle.
The gang being a family. These boys are my absolute favourite characters. They're adorable together already but I really want Johnny to call Stan and Barry his uncles. Or have Marcus refer to Nooshy as Johnny's sister (feel like that one could be slipped in easily). Marcus is an amazingly good dad to Johnny after the whole disownment thing was patched up and it's clear that whatever mandated therapy they went to is working wonders so I want more scenes of them together (and hopefully Johnny doing more questionable things, like please, let the boy pick a lock).
Gunter getting a conflict. Now, I'm not saying drag Gunter through personal hell. He has done that enough in shorts. But he hasn't faced a personal conflict in any movie yet and is the only troupe member to not do so. I think it's about time we get more of an insight into his character and I think this would be an amazing opportunity.
Things I Don't Want To See (Please No Illumination, Please No):
I swear, do not kill off Nana, Hobbs, Clay, or Mrs. Crawly. They're the oldest cast members, I know. You want more character development, I know. If you kill any of them off however, I will personally lead the revolt. They are all immortal now.
Bring back Mike. I hate him. Just straight up. He bullies a kid!!! That goes for Klaus too and Jimmy. They are irredeemable villians. You bring them back, I protest in front of your studio offices. They all deliberately hurt people, two of which used abuse of power as well. Just NO.
Create a love triangle? Jail. I hate love triangles. Partially due to it typically actually being a lover corner (two people interested in one person instead of the actual intricacies of a triangle), mainly because it's stupid. It's overplayed, in nearly every film saga it seems, and are always pretty pointless. I just do not like them in the slightest and will cry if I have to sit through one.
Do not put Buster in jail. I know we joke about the amount of felonies that man has committed but at this point, if he goes to jail, the legal system in their universe will be busy for the next century. Also, none of the teens need extra trauma. Just leave them be.
If y'all destroy one of the best queer allegories I have ever seen by giving Johnny a canon female romantic partner, I will start a fucking revolution. I literally study cultures and films and character coding, ok? Like that's my whole field of study. Johnny's story being a queer allegory is so important to me. Not only is it incredably realistic in my opinion (I cry at the disownment scene because something very similar was said to me when I came out), but almost every other queer personI talk to how has watched these movies picked up on the allegory and loves it as well. It's very well written and not subtle in a good way. It's great for starting conversations about LGBTQIA+ characters in media. ...Also, he's apparently based on Elton John according to my friend that has the character book, and I'm pretty sure Elton John would be pissed if you fucked that up.
Though, I feel like I should make a disclaimer here. My first few fandoms that I was raised in have taught me how to be an expert at ignoring canon (special shout out to Supernatural in particular). Just because it happens in a movie, doesn't mean I'm going to put that in my works. I'm a fanfic writer after all. I write what I want to happen, not necessarily what does happen according to canon.
Hiiiiii!!
Yeah, I wanted to ask this for like a few days lmao and completely forgot
You posted your characters Vencer (his name got autocorrected to Gender 😭😭) and Cutlass, and I actually was going to ask if they're from the same universe as Flare and the others? And if they are, what are their powers?
Also I had a question of do you have any duos/trios/squads? Characters that know eachother, relationships? You've never mentioned that, except for Vortex and his sunshine best friend.
Feel free to rant as much as you want lmao
Hey!! Thanks for asking!! That's actually a really interesting question, I'll take up that offer and rant a bit now lol
Answer is under the cut:
So both Cutlass and Vencer are from the same universe as the other OCs I posted so far. Almost all of my OCs are actually from the same universe (except I have a few video game OCs but I haven't posted them yet), its the only one I got (it's enough work anyways lol)
About Vencer and his duo-dynamic:
Vencers race is a Radiationmaker (haven't mentioned them yet, I might design the Lord soon-ish because she's really important) which means he's practically immune to all radiation. Since all powers are created and kept running through radiation, this ability is crucial for all the other powers to function, which makes it the second most powerful race and ability. Noone can limitlessly use their powers and in short; Radiationmakers are a sort of super-battery and can support other people by overcharging their abilities.
Vencer also overcharges his weapon and arrows with radioactive energy, which is too high for opponents of other races to withstand, but won't harm him or people of his own race.
Vencers best friend Dakari is a Metalmaker (the strongest race), he's also the last one to exist, since all of the other Metalmakers have been hunted down by the Warmakers. So this also answers the second question a bit; since Dakari and Vencer are both gladiators, they started working together as a power-duo (although they have a bit of an enemies to friends story lol), with Dakari being incredibly powerful (I will explain his powers in detail in another post sometime), while his powers almost never run out as long as Vencer supports him with his ability. The general story is split up in about 5 arcs and one arc revolves entirely around Vencer and Dakari and their time as gladiators in the arena, until their paths cross with the rest of the main cast in the following arc.
About Cutlass:
His story is shorter, because he's not as relevant as the other characters I shared so far. As I mentioned he's a pirate captain, and he's a Gravitymaker, which is why he has a huge advantage in space, given how gravitymakers can bend gravity to their liking to a certain degree and period of time, depending on how powerful they are. Cutlass comes from a poor background, he was just an orphan who lived in the streets as a child, until the former captain of the pirate crew picked him up. Said captain was an evil man, Cutlass eventually orchestrated a mutiny and took his place. Once he was in charge, he led his crew to glory and caused chaos across both the sky and earth. In the story he's simply a chaotic side villian (with redemption potential thanks to his boyfriend, but I won't go into that yet🤐) who's just sometimes causing problems for the main cast lol.
Dynamics between characters:
Phew I have lots of duos etc and relationships between my characters lol. I will only mention some very important ones for a start (also I'lll leave out the dynamics between mine and my friends OCs for now)
So the main duo are Lucho and Vortex, my sweet sunshine war prince and edgy Peacemaker as I mentioned before. The story starts out with Flare (Also mentioned before: the protagonist, who is the only lord who never figured out his powers, so he keeps his identity a secret and works common mercenary jobs) being forced on a mission with Lucho and then eventually running into Vortex which makes them a trio for a part of the story. They have this fun dynamic with Flare being like an overworked dad with Vortex (being 14 at the time of the stories beginning) is a chaotic troublemaker and Lucho (being 16) is a curious naive kiddo who's never been outside and dosen't understand the world at all lol.
For... reasons (🤐) Vortex and Lucho are separated from Flare at some point, but they end up meeting a girl, Citra, who joins them for quite a while and they become quite a trio. (She matches Vortex troublemaker nature so I do feel sorry for Lucho lol)
Another very important relationship is between Flare and Rae. They're the only person Flare ever truly trusted and the only one who knows his true identity.
And of course eventually... there's Flares love interest (who I'll keep a secret for now), heh.
So that's enough ranting for now lol, I'll drop more lore again in the future! Thanks for hearing out my rant lol
Into The Spider-Verse: Spider-Man Noir (SM Noir #1-4) (Comission for WeirdKev27)
Hello all you happy true believers? What is this I hear? What wonderous thing? Could it be the jazz piano's ring? A dimly lit light above the doooor could it be… noir? Noir, what is it good for, it's good for you it's good for me and it's our next stop on the spider-verse train. It also might strengthen the economy
Like SP/DR Spider-Man noir is a bit diffrent in the source material. In the movie he's mostly a bunch of detective cliches strung together with the dulcet tones of nicholas woooooooomotherfuuuucccckkiiing cage, one of another spider-person mostly there for jokes and to give a phenomenal actor something to do. Out of the three he gets the least to do character wise: Spider Pig gets plenty of mileage out of being a talking pig, cartoon physics shenanigans and being played by Baby J, and Peni gets both plenty of utility in fights and SP/DR's emotional death. In contrast Noir is just again mostly played off the strength of being Nicholas Woooooooomotherfffuuuuckiing cage. Noir in the comics though.. he's a fairly tragic well done character using a part of spider-man's character that people don't tend to think of and a 30's noir setting to craft a compelling tale of revenge, responsiblity and doing what's right. Noir , like Miles, was part of a subline with marvel if a mostly forgotten one outside of spidey: Marvel Noir. The concept came about when a french comics editor pitched a noir version of spider-man to writer David Hine, whose career is all over the place, mostly filling in for various other writers, with his most notable works being this mini series and District X, a mutant based police procedrual, both speaking to his love of gritty crime stuff. He co plotted the mini and it's sequel Eyes Without A Face, which I might cover depending on how this one does, with said editor Fabrice Sapbobliski. Marvel realized what they had and thus launched had underated comics legend Fred Van Lete craft an x-men series that I weridly HAVEN'T read but will likely cover as my attitude to most x-men stories is
WIth both series getting sequels, along with evne more noir titles for Daredevil, Wolverine, Luke Cage and Punisher, all ones i'd be willing to look at, along with an iron man one to run alongside the x-men and spider-man sequels. Spidey Noir would go on to be a key part of the spider-verse, before dying, getting better, and getting another mini I haven't read, but the line itself kinda faded into the mists. The combo of the inherently cool concept, spidey getting more multiverse team ups than the others, and the deft writing of this one. But how'd it hold up this reading? How does spidey adapt to a gritty noir story? Why does it tie in shockingly well with the characters history? Find out bellow!
Issue one begins with, in natural noir fashion, in media res. Even if your not familiar with the name, your familiar with the trope; we begin in the middle or towards the end of the story and then work back to how we got here.
The here in this case is a bunch of police busting into J. Jonah Jameson's office to find…
Naturally Spidey didn't do it but since the cops, as always no matter the time or relative dimension ins pace, shoot first ask questions later and Noir flees into the night.
Three weeks earlier, and the story proper begins: Ben Ulrich is taking pictures of the homeless for the daily bugle and also serving as our narrator. The Great Depression is in full swing and many has suffered with the bugle profiting off that. For those less familiar with Spidey's supporting cast, Ben is an older journalist who tries to mentor peter on occasion and serves as a source of info for our hero, taking turns with city editor Robbie Robertson in providing peter with exposition on the villian of the week. That said while Ben frequently pops up in spidey stories in this role, and to serve as a supporting character for his nephew Phil, aka the heroic green goblin and one of many less than heroic hobgoblins, his biggest roles have been outside the web of spider-man: he served as a major character in Dennis Hopless' underated Spider-Woman run , finding cases for Jessica to solve, and most recently was a MAJOR part of Gerry Duggan's x-men, finding out mutankind could ressurect, getting the knowledge wiped from him, then having it restored by Cyclops who never signed off on that and helped break the story to soften the backlash, a decision that's having repercussions to this day and likely will continue to as fall of x begins. He's most writers go to when they need a writer at the bugle. He's mostly known for being part of Daredevil's cast though, having figured out his id and then refused to print it, serving as an ally and confidant to matt from then on.
Here he's a bit diffrent: he's still a beaten down experinced joruanlist, but the greasier kind. Like I said most of his stories are depression era misery porn. He has a sense of justice.. but it's been beaten down by how broken the system is as we'll soon see. For now he's paticuarlly shadowing May Parker, in this unvierse a socialist firebrand who wants basic rights for all. It's funny how we're STILL fighting for that nearly a hundred years later
She's naturally dismissed as a socialist and oddly it's not the police who beat her down.. but hired goons
These are the enforcers, unchanged from their role in the main marvel universe. The Enforcers are early foes of spideys and personal faviorites of mine: Muscle man ox, skeezy mustache man and swift with a punch of a knife fancy dan, and bullwhip expert montana. They mostly show up in crime related stories and are a group partly because spidey being spidey could likely wreck their shit alone. Their also not really used a TON thanks to that, but I like their cool apperances and unique status as some of spidey's only rogues who don't use gadgets, powers or super suits. It's just pure skill or muscle in ox's case.
Their also an emblem of why spidey adapts so well to this setting: Versatility: Spidey has dealt with space, magic, and most often costumed menaces. But just as common as punching guys dressed as birds or insects is organized crime. Peter often deals with Crimebosss, especially early on with Kingpin having debuted as one of his rogues and still often showing up as a thorn in our heroes side. Even the Green Goblin and Doc Ock have weirdly gotten involved with crime wars and most goblin stories for either Gobby or Hobby have them taking over crime for some reason. So taking peter and plopping him in a mob style noir stoir and making him a more 30's style pulp vigilante fits like a glove and what' sused of his cast likewise adapts gracefully as we'll see. Their scaled down to fit the realistic tone more , but they still fit perfectly. For now though let's get back to the story. The Enforcers ask may to go back to russia ya commie, which again sadly is something that STILL fucking happens. Seriously you can lovfe a country and still crticize it. I don't like how badly this country treats immigrants, trans persons, queer people in general, children or mental health and tha'ts just the SHORT list, you can crticize something because you want better. And that's what May's doing: She dosen't want to leave america, she just wants people to not be starving on the streets because a few big shots got greedy and fucked it up for the rest of us. Are we sure this isn't the 1930's? Absolutely positive?
Anyways, before Montana can whip an old lady, whip her good, Ben comes in, and while Ox wants to pummel him, he's mysteriously off limits, though the enforcers don't like it. We find that like May around the same time in the mainline comics, May is runnig a shelter. I prefer this brand of aunt may and i'm glad it carried to the mcu: fighting for her community, rabble rousing, instead of just waiting to die basically and serving as a reson peter can't go public with his id lest she have a heart attack.
The encorcers work for the Goblin, no prize for guessing whose counterpart he is, the local mob boss who peter KNOWS killed uncle ben. This peter.. is full of rage and understandably so: the police did nothing to catch his uncle's killer and the mobsters despite seemingly having no reason to, attack him and his aunt for just trying to do the right thing.
Ben decides to help educate peter why things are this way, taking him to the black cat club. In this universe instead of stealing fancy things Felcia Hardy runs a fancy speakeasy.. and it's there Peter sees the mayor, the cheif of vice squad, and an industralist Ben spoke out against.. and is thus why he died. As Ben explains the attack on May isn't personal, the Goblin is simply a mercinary at the end of the day: the various big wigs all help clear the job in some way, and the goblin does it to give all these creepy assholes denablity. After all the police don't strike may.. because the police attacking an old woman looks bad. But some petty thugs beating up an old woman is just buisness. They can turn a blind eye to that. The Goblin does some work for hire and in return he can do whatever he wants… which is really how this job works, just with less elder abuse.
We also get an actual look at the Goblin himself: Norman looks normal enough with his Goblin name a mystery, but has mysterious ties to the psychics as his right and left hand men are both freak show alumni: The Vulture, who in this universe is a carnival geek. Which means he bites chickens heads off eddy.. and yeah it's as fucked up a practice as it sounds. Watch the film nightmare alley for a more in depth examination of this. And then you have Kraven who here is an animal trainer instead of a big game hunter, but it still fits as while a hunter Kraven does frequently used trained animals, lions and alligators mostly, against spider-man.
Peter decides to rage against the machine but despite all that rage he's still just a rat in Norman's cage and only dosen't die because he's with Ben. Ben wonders what the hell he was thinking, but Peter responds that he just.. can't stand there and do nothing while Norman gets to gloat about what he's done. So Ben finds a more healthy outlet for his new sidekick's anger: the daily bugle.
This JJJ is about what you'd expect: he has the usual sesantionalist asshole bent you see, but a heart of gold, agreeing to help peter pay for school for getting him pictures of human misery since he dosen't have a spider-man yet to get pictures of.
I do like how peter, unlike most continuities, dosen't jump RIGHT to photography thougH: ben simply has peter carry his shit and learn how to by watching… and watch he does as we see tons of misery ending with a woman whose husband comitted scucide to escape his debts.. unware the goblin's just gonna put it on his wife because wherever you are in time or space, norman osborn is objectively the worst human being. Except weirdly the main universe right now. Peter is still fired up though… and later that evening ben muses on that, how he used to have the same passion for justice before he got broken down and worries peter's rage will consume him, turning him into the same burnt out shell.. and also worries because we finally get a clear picture of his hinted connection to the goblin… as he reveals that contrary to what peter, who found ben's corpse , assume it wasn't a wild animal that killed uncle ben.. but the vulture who has razor sharp teeth and an unhinged jaw… the visual.. is truly horrifying… but the important part is how ben knows it..
We open issue 2 with Peter and Ben watching some apartments go up, with Peter having upgraded to actually taking the pictures himself… and still spinning at how the Goblin is just blatantly getting away with this. Fancy Dan was on sight. But taking it to the police won't do anything and while Ben is determined to keep his head down… Peter refuses, citing what Uncle Ben told him about the great war
I love this socalist take on the old mantra.. and it's not wrong. When someone in power is corrupt we have to do everything we can to get rid of them. It just often dosen't work because the system isn't BUILT to remove corruption but support it. It was true in alternate 1930's new york and it's true now. That night Peter visits Ben who feeling guilty for watching the other ben die is down booze avenue… while PEter gets a phone call from one of ben's informant's calling ben "the spider" and telling him the goblins goons are opening up some artifacts swindled from the museum.
Said artifacts are spider-idols from… some place far away. They look african in design but what country on the massive contient I can't tell ya just yet. The point is when fancy dan touches the idol he's swarmed with about 80 dozen posions giant spiders and dies horribly…. i'd show you this but given my reaction to just SEEING the page myself
And my general arachnnophobia… hard no. I do howeve rhave to show you what happens when one bites peter. Turns out it was a test of worthness.. of sorts
…. also I question why the spider god needed a teenager naked for this. Just saying. Peter wakes up in a coccoon because this comic is determined to break me it seems, but Peter finds he now has spider sense, his muscular, you know all the usual spider man stuff. He can also naturally shoot webs. I like the mystical bent here too, helps the pulp feel of things since they often used tribalism. Granted that comes with the asterix that it shoudl've been something a tad more specific like anasasi, an actual spider-god, and not just "GENETIC AFRICAN TRIBAL IMMAGERY", and that maybe by 2010 they shoudlv'e known better.
Now he has the power Peter bursts in on a meeting between Ben and the goblin, easily dispatching his men.. but finding himself a problem. He tells the goblin to stop.. but Norman refuses, and makes a valid point: the only way to really stop him this easily is to kill him.. and peter isn't ready to do that. He dosen't confront Ben who recognizes Peter.. and Peter's utter distgust at what his mentor really is, a stooge for the goblin, gets to Ben. Ben quits the goblin's service and plans to unload the files he has on the guy. Problem is…. he tells Jonah who comes over and plugs him… and nicely makes it a good case for Peter having actually killed him in revenge.
While one spider dies.. another is born. Peter decides he needs to step it up to really end this.. and the only way to do that.. is to become something else… to do it for revenge, to do it to try and stay true, doing it for the ones left to twist in the wind...
I love the design here.. while the fedora added next series really completes it the mitliary jacket, turtle neck and repurposed flight mask all fell nicely home spun yet still suitably badass. Peter made this himself, with what he had being a poor teenager during the depression.. but he makes it out of his uncles uniform turning a hidden shame from killing people in a war he didn't belive in into a uniform, a symbol against crime. And yes I get the batman parallels here but it was kinda unavoiable given how much of film noir is in batman's dna, but it's still diffrent enough and peter's own quest for vengance are diffrent enough for it to be a non issue. We open issue 3 with peter swearing there's a scientefic explination for the spider god thing, but for now he just wants to get help and goes to Ben…. and find shis corpse. The resulting scene is soul crushing,… peter weeping openly with the police not giving a single damn and only not pinning it on peter because the da dosen't buy it. Once again the Goblin has taken someone from peter for trying to do the right thing.
WHile Goblin intimdates Jonah, JJ having not found the files Ulrich was about to give to the press, Peter goes to who really has them: Felcia hardy, ben's ex whose utterly broken. The art here. is amazing, and her expressions just haunting as she explains Ben told her to give them to peter if anything happened. The art by Carmine Diamncio is fucking fantastic and eaisly one of the highlights getting the gritty tone while also being expressive and animated. Peter still drags his feet slightly, feeling Ben was terrible.. but Aunt May naturally gets through to him even if she dosen't know the full story: he did right by peter, do right by him.
After the funeral and JJ confirming he's pure scum and peter can't trust him peter decides he was given his power for a reason: to take the goblin out. He can't go after him directly.. but with Ben's files, he can go after his rackets and his mob associates looking to norman for protection
The latter is the real problem: The goblin's power was, as mentoind, all in the fact he could do the jobs no one else could do.. now his association with his various criminal buddies means their giving him one week: kill spidey or he's done. Norman decides enough of this and plans to send his men after peter after Ox reveals he saw Peter at ben's apartment. Norman takes it well. Concidentally Ox is never seen again in this story and probably died on the way back to his home planet.
Peter meanwhile is annoyed abotu JJ's suddenly spineless editorials and goes to confront him and well…. opening sequence. After that Peter is shaken both by the fact there's no way that was a setup as his visit wasn't planned or anything, and the bullet in his shoulder.
He decides to play it smart, and uses the files and what he has on ulrich.. and in a clever twist we find that the jj we saw at the start and that killed ben.. is in fact the chameleon, in this version using makeup and what not instead of masks. He's also Kraven's half brother, something that hasn't really come up but will be very important here in a moment. So the issue ends with Norman having Felcia dragged to his private base where he plans to murder both her and jj.. and peter… and he's sent the vulture to go get him… but with peter absent we end the issue with him just above may. We open the final issue with Vulture preparing to eat the other half of the couple when peter comes in.. and disturbingly FILLING vulture with lead. While he disturbed it, it's clear one shot , maybe two, would've done it… peter is just full of rage, at nearly seeing one of his family once again sensely slaughtered. This isn't justice.. it's vengance. And may rails into Peter for it pointing out he's no better than the others if he keeps down this road. But peter's narration, having taken over for ben in issues 3 and 4, makes it clear it's complicated: he can tell he's right.. but his heart is telling him he would've hurt her. She sees a reckless man.. but what peter is is a scared child who lost his uncle and his mentor and almost lost the one person he had left. What he did was wrong… but you can understand it. The question is will peter continue down the road of the animal and become what Ben Ulrich was.. or become what his late mentor couldn't. Let's see shall we?
At Goblins secret torture house, we find out Felcia killed Chameleon.. and is thus shook that Jameson is alive and well. Norman decides that everything else was fine but he can't really let her live after killing one of his minons and after she scratches his face, he plans to feed her to spiders…. only for another to show up… a melee insues as Peter easily takes down the remaning two enforcers, and fights kraven, eventually both saving jameson from a tiger and pushign Kraven into spiders while Goblin runs away with Felcia… who isn't scared. Felcia is done well her ea swhile she did sell out to the goblin previously she's clearly taken none of his shit and points out even if he ESCAPES… the mob is going to be gunning for him now he's lost just abotu everything.
And he's about to loose the rest as Peter swings down and rescues Felcia and while she runs away the two confront each other.. and rip off theri masks. Goblin finds out Peter parker is spider-man .. and Peter… well..
I love this twist and how this reveal plays out. Norman also points out anyone who see his real face dies.. it's killed or be killed.. but in the eleventh hour… Peter refuses. Goblin needs to stand trial. Peter's character arc is fantastic here: he starts out full of rage, finds an outlet… but also starts to loose himself in what he can now do, that he has the power.. but he has to use it responsibly. It's this final moment where he realizes how to: the goblin's lost his power, he can stand trial.. and it's not peter's responsibly to end him. While this peter HAS killed.. he's learned he doesn't NEED to
Norman dosen't want.. any of that but luckily for peter he didnj't actually KILL kraven.. at least not yet. The spiders from kraven grab norman and Peter looks on at this horror show as at last the goblin and the gangsters.. are no more. So we get our wrap up with Felcia: two months later and a combination of JJJ being back in charge of the bugle and Ben's files has cleared out the cities corruption for now: all the cops the goblin owned are gone, the mayor is gone, everything is mostly better. Peter asks Felcia about her relationship with the goblin that i'm just bringing up now, she refuses to tell but he still gives her a ncie picture of her and ben, reminding us that even if our heroes won.. they still lost something int he process.
We end on a great closer too, one that hints at the eventual sequel but still feels concise enough as a finish.
It's a great message to go out on: That evil does exist and may always.. but someone will always exist to fight it…. and they usuallyw ill eventually win. And for now.. peter is that someone.
If it wasn't obvious enough.. Spider-Man Noir is a masterpiece and one of the best spider-man stories i've ever read. A well done take that honors the characters history while forming the kind of story that only could be told in the setting it's in. It's gripping, has a wonderful character arc, dynamite art and some truly haunting images. If you have the stomach for some noir, seek this one out.
Next Time: We get the opposite of this as we dive into the first appearance and secret origin of the spectacular spider-ham! Weird isn't it?
okay SO I WATCHED THE FINALE
okay not really a review just rambling SO theyre definitely not just writing dev out of the main cast i mean they very well could now but that would be just SO boring bc he actually had the realization.
I think its one of these three options: 1 hes like a background character this is the end of his arc and hes a supporting character that helps out only in some episodes but in this option idk what theyd do with peri 2 they somehow get him to remember on some loophole or SOMETHING and he gets peri back while becoming friends with hazel but i honestly dont know how they would write that in? im hoping its like this tho 3 he has irep again and is just a one note villian and thats the satus quo for the show
i do have to say i find it a LITTLE dissapointing how easily hazel couldve wished for dev to also remember??? like that wouldve worked story wise that he remembers but they still take peri from him and in s2 they redeem him more to the point he gets peri back??
i thin they deff are going to make dev and peri be a duo again bc otherwise why all that buildup??? if im right season 2 isnt greenlit yet AND one of the writers / people who work on it is like retweeting fan stuff about the show in which theyd probs see how dev n peri are very popular so i hope that would be a factor in seeing em both in season 2 ? overall love the show the ending does seem to be a bit of a cliffhanger with unanswered questions so theres more hype for season 2 which honestly good for them i hope it works but yeah!! great show overal if you like kids shows in general
#fop#i need a season2 like rn#i like a lot of the characters#also i like hazels pink hat#but i just like pink so thats it probably#the animation is SO great with textures
Gleeboot Main Character Descriptions (Original Cast)
Hey everyone, Yes, I know you all know the basics of each Glee Character and what their personalities are, however, what I am going to show is who they are in my series and what issues I will be focusing on fixing for each character. I sincerely hope you enjoy this rebrand of Glee and will consider reading my rewrite. Also, I consider Blaine, Sam, and Coach Beiste part of the original cast so I will be including descriptions of them as well since they all played large parts in the show.
Starting off with the very first character shown, the queen herself, Sue Sylvester.
What went wrong: Sue became a one-dimensional villian as the series went on with an irrational hatred for the glee club and its director Will Schuester making the story predictable. Whatever growth Sue had in her feelings towards the club was always rejected in favor of her being their biggest obstacle which became tiresome as the seasons went on. She also was given an insane storyline of being obsessed with Kurt and Blaine's love story in the final season. What went right: The exploration of Sue's family namely her mother and sister truly gave the depth that was needed to show why Sue became who she was. Her softness with Jean (her sister) and Becky were always so heartwarming and what made Sue a person rather than a characture.
What this means for Gleeboot: Sue will absolutely remain the villian until the needed character developement is cause for her to grow and have new enemies (ex. Coach Beiste's arrival and cutting Sue's budget in Season 2, Coach Roz Washington trying to take Sue's job in Season 3) to keep the story fun and interesting while still keeping the edge to Sue that's needed to make her hilarious yet effective.
Up next is a character who needs a lot of redeeming the coach of the New Directions, Will Schuester
What went wrong: Where do I even begin? Will came off as incredibly creepy with his relationships with students instead of being the inspirational teacher he was intended to be. Also he was incredibly toxic in his relationship with Emma as the seasons went on putting her down constantly and never seeming to support her hopes and dreams which was so uncharacteristic of who Will was shown to be in the earlier seasons of Glee. He also stood his ground on issues that clearly didn't matter (ex. When he got pissed at Sue for banning twerking in school rather than agreeing to help Unique get a gender-netural bathroom). He also bent over backwards to appease Rachel which he was rightfully called out for but the show made it seem like whoever did so was 'jealous' or 'complaining for no good reason'.
What went right: In the first season Will was mostly everything we could hope for as an inspirational teacher particularly in the episode 'Wheels' when he had the entire Glee Club spend a week in wheelchairs so they could understand the hardships wheelchair bound Artie went through. He also rightfully tried to showcase and lift up the entire club earlier rather than focus on his two favorites (Finn and Rachel).
What this means for Gleeboot: Unlike Glee, Mr. Schuester will not be the prime focus but rather a supporting character as the teacher of the New Directions who tries to inspire the group and give everyone an equal shot to feel special. He also will be a teacher that the students lean on for support with issues that they are going through but he will also have his own personal life separated from the club, boundaries will be important.
Moving onto the next character showcase and the first of the original New Directions, Mr. Kurt Hummel.
What went wrong: Honestly I believe a certain writer who shall remain nameless sadly put his own predjustices and voices them through Kurt (the whole Kurt is biphobic story arc anyone?). Which is so unfortunate because Kurt was one of the most accepting characters of anyone who was different. I also believe that same writer would do so many out of character things to make him seem like he was in the wrong all the time which is so sad because so many people looked up to Kurt.
What went right: Kurt was one of the first mainstream gay character which helped and inspired so many closeted gay people to feel like there was someone like them on TV. He also was so proud himself that it was inspiring to watch week in and week out especially in the earlier seasons.
What this means for Gleeboot: Since Gleeboot will be taking place in 2024, so much in the world has changed towards the majority of people's attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community especially in schools where any sort of homophobic slander that Kurt faced would've resulted in displinary action. While unfortunately homophobia still exists especially in a small conservative town like Lima was shown to be a lot of Kurt's early arc won't change as much as far as bigoted students bullying him but the faculty at McKinley High would most likely be a lot more helpful than they were on the show. Kurt will also be one of the most accepting people in the club who will help so many others come into their own.
For our next character, I will not be showing the actor's face out of respect for all of his victims but the character is definitely a controversal one as Noah 'Puck' Puckerman
What went wrong: A lot of Puck's earliest storylines are very wrong, especially in relation to what happened that night with him and Quinn. Unfortunately, the show played it off as just cheating but there are so many indications to it wasn't consentual which is problematic in itself. Also Puck going onto 'date' Kitty is also quite problematic because of the age gap between them.
What went right: Puck's redemption arc from beign a bully to ending up in the air force. I feel like his character is actually one of the few characters who benefitted from the later seasons rather than was hurt by those apperances, although his role was significantly reduced compared to the other characters we've discussed.
What this means for Gleeboot: A lot of Puck's behavior would need to change in order for him to be a rootable character but I believe it would change the essence of his character too much to do that, so Puck will remain a very contraversal character who will eventually learn and grow from his mistakes.
Our next character is our leading male of the group as far as Glee was concerned, Finn Hudson
What went wrong: Instead of being the rootable leader of the Glee Club, Finn did many unforgivable things that to me seemed so out of character for him most importantly being the way he outed Santana in Season 3. Also encouraging Quinn to cheat on Sam in Season 2 made absolutely no sense and seemed more of a Puck thing to do than Finn. Him kissing Emma when she was freaking out in Season 4? Not okay.
What went right: Finn was the glue that held the New Directions together and there were so many occasions that it showed. He was a natural born leader who helped the New Directions when they were at their lowest.
What this means for Gleeboot: Finn was definitely an imperfect character, especially at the beginning of the show but as he emerses himself in the group he learns that image isn't everything and eventually finds his way to do what he loves even though it isn't what's cool, performing. There also will not be any physical cheating from his character.
Our next character is my personal favorite and one that I have done many deep dives into, Quinn Fabray
What went wrong: Much like Kurt, Quinn seemed to be a punching bag for certain writers of the show who took out their frustrations on her leading to her doing many things that were out of character. Also like Sue, Quinn was frequently reverted back into a one-dimensional villian that stood in the way of what many fans saw as the love story of the show, Finn and Rachel.
What went right: Quinn had great character development particularly in Season 1 as well as during Season 3 where she was faced with the reality that popularity wasn't everything and eventually found her way, getting into her dream school Yale.
What this means for Gleeboot: Quinn is such a multi-dimensional character that goes through one of the most intense transformations which will be showcased throughout the series with her going from villian to rootable hero who we all want to see succeed and feel all the pain she goes through. Unlike the original show all character growth will stick.
Moving onto one of my least favorite characters from the entire show, Rachel Berry.
What went wrong: Instead of being the rootable ambitious girl that show wanted us to see, Rachel was incredibly selfish and did cruel things to innocent people (ex. sending Sunshine, who she just met to a crack house) or ruined her friendships by needing to be number 1 (ex. Running for senior class president despite knowing it would hurt Kurt). It got to the point where many didn't want her to have a happy ending, especially when she began to self-sabatoged her chances of her dream role in Funny Girl in Season 5.
What went right: In my opinion not much went right on the writer's behalf for Rachel who was supposed to be the main protaginist. Season 1 was the best showcase of Rachel being the underdog that so many were inspired to root for. She did at times grow like in Season 2 when she tried to help Sam win the duets competition but sadly the positives were shortlived since she was rarely ever put in her place when she was in the wrong.
What this means for Gleeboot: Rachel will maintain her competitive edge and ambition to become a Broadway star but with the self-awareness that she had throughout the first season where she looked out for the group besides just herself, but that doesn't mean if an opportunity comes up, she won't just jump on it.
We are heading back to the adults of Season 1 with our OCD guidance conselour, Emma Pillsbury.
What went wrong: Emma became religated to Will's wife and love interest and we lost all of what was special about her by the end of the series which is sad. Her and Finn kissing making her freak out and not want to get married was such a strange storyline that never quite sat right with me. Also her not having sex with Carl even after marrying him quite frankly made no sense. She was willing to lose her virginity to Will in Season 1 so what changed?
What went right: Emma was shown to be incredibly caring and compassionate for the students which most of the other teachers didn't seem to have other than maybe Will. Though she had her struggles with OCD she did try her best to overcome them eventually going to consuling herself which was an interesting story arc.
What this means for Gleeboot: Much like Will, Emma will play far less of a leading role in the show and will be a supporting character that many of the students will go to with their varying issues and she will do everything she can to offer them help and support.
Our next adult is someone we love to hate, Terri Schuester
What went wrong: Terri being brought back in the Legen of Doom was probably one of the worst things that could've happened during the series. While her character was always shown to be off her rocker, Season 2 was laughably bad with the attempts the writers made to try to sell her as evil then redeem her in the end by having her get the New Directions tickets.
What went right: I feel like her arc in Season 1 was incredible showing how manipulative she was by trying to convince her then husband that she really was pregnant and finding an alternative way to get a child. While in the end they weren't right for each other, I think Season 1 had a more fitting end to their relationship.
What this means for Gleeboot: Much like the other adults mentioned before, Terri will play far less of a main role in the series and be relegated to a supporting role. I will still be showcasing how awful she can be towards her husband and how she would do anything to keep him but there will be far less of an emphasis on it.
Up next we are going back to the students with someone who I completely believed deserved better though I haven't touched as much on it as I would've liked to, Mercedes Jones.
What went wrong: Mercedes in truth was barely ever paid her due with how much she truly brought to the New Directions, frequently being relegated to a background singer who gave out the last jaw dropping note which truly was a complete shame because in my opinion she was quite possibly the strongest vocalist of the entire show (I'm always torn between her and Santana on that one). I also didn't love some of the writing of Mercedes, particually towards her treatment of Sam in the later seasons who had always done everything to show her how much he cared about her.
What went right: Mercedes was shown to be a strong woman who didn't take anyone's nonsense and was one of the few characters who dared to stand up to Rachel which I find commendable. She was a worthy advesary who pursued her dreams and ended up becoming a successful artist.
What this means for Gleeboot: Mercedes will have much more of a strong prescene throughout the series and will not be relegated to a glofied backup singer as she said "I'm Beyoncé, I ain't no Kelly Rowland" and that is exactly how she'll be treated.
Going into the New Directions, our next showcased student is Tina Cohen-Chang.
What went wrong: Tina was severly underdeveloped as a character which lead to many confusing choices as the show went on with her becoming quite the diva which made no sense to the shy character we were introduced to in the first season. Tina also became quite selfish and obsessed with popularity which once against left many scratching their heads wondering who truly is Tina Cohen-Chang?
What went right: I absolutely loved when the writers showed Tina to be supportive, especially of her boyfriends (ex. trying to help Artie learn to dance in Season 1, submitting applications to dance schools for Mike because it was his dream in Season 3). This was the true heart of who she was deep down. She also wasn't afraid to stand her ground on her beliefs (ex. When she felt she wasn't being treated right by Artie she stood up to him).
What this means for Gleeboot: First and foremost, Tina will not be faking a stutter in Season 1, to me it was one of the most unnessarcy storylines of the show. I know the character was originally supposed to have a stutter but I think eliminating the whole stutter part completly would work. Tina will be a very shy and reserved girl who struggles to find her voice as part of the New Directions but eventually finds her courage and becomes a strong woman.
Moving onto Tina's best friend, Artie Abrams.
What went wrong: The writers truly lost the essence of who Artie was turning him into a misogynsitic jerk most of the time who degrated women, something he clearly wasn't when the show first started.
What went right: Artie was great respresentation for those who were physically disabled being that the character was in a wheelchair and was able to show so many people that their disablities don't have to limit their lives.
What this means for Gleeboot: Artie will return to form as the sweet but dorky guy that we grew to love in the first season. While he may be influenced by many of the other guys in the club, he won't turn as misogynistic towards his girlfriends/love interests.
Our final character who made her debut in the pilot is Santana Lopez
What went wrong: I feel like a lot of Santana's insults went too far, especially ones where she body shamed many of the New Directions (ex. Finn, Mercedes, Quinn). Santana also manipulating Brittany who is supposed to be the love of her life without any consequences was questionable at best.
What went right: Santana was one of the first mainstream lesbian characters who helped so many people be seen and heard. Naya's portrayl of the character was perfection. The developement of Santana was one of the few characters who's arc felt complete and well written.
What this means for Gleeboot: Not a whole lot will change for Santana character wise other than her insults evolving to 2024 where she will still roast the hell out of everyone but keep weight out of it.
Did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks? Up next is the third member of the Unholy Trinity, Brittany S. Pierce.
What went wrong: Like so many airheaded characters as the seasons went on Brittany became dumbed down which was unfortunate. Also making Brittany into a secret genius made absolutely no sense and making it canon that her biological father was Stephen Hawking also felt in really poor taste.
What went right: Brittany was a hilarious comic relief with her one liners in Season 1 and her relationship with Santana was one that inspired so many fans. What this means for Gleeboot: Brittany was a great respresentation for bisexuals everywhere who like many of the characters made them feel like they were being seen, unfortunately the show never fully embraced Brittany as a bisexual and that is something I would love to change in this story. There also will be no 'Brittany is secretly a genius and goes to MIT' storyline instead Brittany will be mainly focused on her dancing which is a huge part of who she is.
Now moving on to the forgotten football player and New Directions member, Matt Rutherford
What went wrong: We literally learned nothing about Matt other than he was a football player, he was one of the strongest dancers, he was friends with Mike, and he might have had a thing with Santana at one point. Other than that he was a huge mystery which is sad considering he was an original member of the New Directions.
What went right: Honestly, not much for poor Matt which is why his actor left not wanting to be reglated to the background.
What this means for Gleeboot: Matt will absolutely be more developed in the series with him being more than just a body for the New Directions. I don't want to reveal too much about his character but he will have love interests as well as a backstory of why he leaves the New Directions after Season 1.
Finally, from the original cast here is the Asian Dancer himself, Mike Chang.
What went wrong: Much like Matt, we hardly got to know Mike outside of his relationship with Tina only getting very limited characterization in 'Asian F' which was in Season 3!
What went right: Mike's relationship with Tina was one of only two things that was fully realized, the other was his passion for dance which is clearly showcased in his defining episode in Season 3.
What this means for Gleeboot: Like Matt, Mike will be developed a lot more because his dynamic with his parents, particularly his father who didn't approve of him pursuing dance instead of law would be so intersting to pursue.
Moving onto the our main cast who joined the show after Season 1, starting off with one of the best teacher characters introduced, Coach Beiste!
What went wrong: Okay, I really hope my intention is seen rather than what I'm about to write being misconstrued but I truly feel like the show undermined the character of Coach Beiste by making her the first transgender character which did not suit who we had grown to know Coach Beiste as. If the show had wanted a transgender storyline I fully believe they already had the character there that was right for it in Unique, who had already shown signs that she was a trans woman but with Alex Newell not being a member of the main cast, it seemed that role got assigned to Dot Marie Jones as Coach Beiste which to me didn't suit the character at all.
What went right: Coach Beiste was shown to be a caring and kind person who valued their students no matter what. They also generously bought Artie a ReWalk to help keep Brittany's faith about Santa being real which was adorable.
What this means for Gleeboot: Coach Beiste will remain a female coach in this series because to me she always identified herself as 'such a girl' and it felt strange for the show to do a 180 on that in its final season. While this may be contraversal, it's what I truly feel is in character for Coach Beiste. We will have a transgender character in Unique when she arrives.
And now we move on to my favorite male character, Sam Evans.
What went wrong: Sam went from being an absolute gentleman and a sweetheart to becoming a sex obsessed clone of Finn as the show went on. I also hated how they made him like every other guy encouraging Mercedes to cheat on her boyfriend Shane. Not to mention the ridiculous storyline of him being hyponotized to be with Rachel which was ridiculous.
What went right: Sam was patient and kind to a healing Quinn after the year she had. He also was one of the first guys to truly stand up for Kurt and be willing to duet with him which is something none of them would've done. Sam was also such a dedicated boyfriend to all of his girlfriends which made him endearing and adorable.
What this means for Gleeboot: Sam will maintain his sweet and caring nature towards the New Directions and will be one of the first popular kids to call out the town's homophobia towards Kurt. He also will be a loyal boyfriend to whoever he dates, never once cheating or encouraging cheating on anyone.
Our last and final character we will talk about is one that became so popular, he became a mainstay in Blaine Anderson.
What went wrong: Blaine went from a very sure of himself posh character to becoming somewhat of whiny and clingy manchild who couldn't go without contact from his boyfriend which led him to cheating. It was so disappointing to see the downfall of a once great and promising character.
What went right: Blaine was Kurt's rock through a rough time in his life where he was being severely bullied for being gay by a closeted gay. He also helped Kurt adjust once he transferred to Dalton Academy and slowly feel in love with him.
What this means for Gleeboot: I'm going back to basics for Blaine where he will be much more like he was in Season 2, sure of who he is but kind of clueless with love but learns along the way with the help of Kurt.
And that's all for the character descriptions. I hope you enjoyed a small preview of what's to come as far as Gleeboot is concerned. If you have any questions or comments you can leave them down below but as always please be respectful.
Much love, Jazzie
I can't believe The Phantom Stranger hasn't had a good ongoing series since the 70s. How!? The man had such a good supporting cast! Doctor Thirteen and his wife Marie, Cassandra Craft, Deadman, there were a group of teenagers he knew in the early issues, etc. And even his villians aren't talked about enough. Tala and Tannarak are some pretty cool villians. This evil british/egyptian sorcerer and a demoness from hell. Those are some interesting villians. There was many directions you could have taken the stranger, i feel. But he's just a supporting character at best nowadays, which is a shame.
What Jason Todd needs as a character is a moment to shine as a hero..All of his current stories focus in his missteps and obsessions and not on his positive impact to crime alley..He is mostly wounded and he is consider as an outsider all the time, Batman has to kick him or save him, before he fails once again..Therapy is always a rushed plot point..Give us a Jason who has an important task only he can solve..Give a Jason Todd who is popular as a crime fighter to the common folks..Noone seems to know his existence outside the bats and it sadens me..Give us a Jason todd who is after a dangerous drag only he can find..Give us a Jason Todd who trains and saves children..Give us a Jason Todd who is loved and not chased away all the time..Who is recognized for his efforts not by the villians, but from the Gotham city and the fellow heroes..And give as a Bruce Wayne who tries and wants to stop looking him as the ghost of his former son, but us a mirror of his own self..Give us a plot where both Bruce and Jason have to realize how similar they are in the best and worst ways...Give us a plot where they are both equally important for a plan or a mission to work out...Give us a serious conservation where both of them sit down and finally talk..And give us a moment where Jason hurt is recognized..Bruce and the others have hurt him many times, with actions and words..Give us a Jason Todd who is fed up, and a father who truly tries to make amends for his horrible ways and mistakes. And give us a story where Jason is having fun, he never had as a teenager..He is stuck to 15 years of his age..He lost so many first times..His return to life should be celebrated...Give him plots where he is having fun with Dick, Tim, Damian,Stephanie, Cass, Bruce etc...And give him plots, where for once he is supported by his family who are willing to went the exra mile against other heroes, who looked down at him and mistreat him to protect him. Yes, he made many mistakes, but he never really had guidance. He has so much potential to be a great hero who get his hands dirty, but succees great things..We don't need another story where he is casted away and chased by his demons, only to be rediculed once again by Batman and the rest of them.
Hey since PJO was apparently one of the most talked about book series this year I wanted to make like a really simple post about an issue I've had with the series since I was a kid. Spoiler warning for up to the Trails of Apollo I think.
Rick Riordan sees very little power in any form of femininity and its pretty obvious. All of his female leads/supporting cast that are GOOD activly reject it and any girl who shows that side of themselves is activly demonized- ei Piper is the best in Aphrodite cabin bc somehow the goddess of love almost only gave birth to vindictive bitchy airheads who break hearts on purpose. Selena, the most feminine "good" character let's her emotions get the best of her and it kills both herself and the man she loves. Biancas sentimentality gets her killed. Zoe is kicked away from her family, Calypso and Echo are tragically abandoned time and time again, and characters like Gaia Circe and Medea are all feminine villians who seem to have no real personality aside from traits of either motherhood or suduction. Even Hera in the confines of the story is demonized worse then Zues and motherhood in general isn't something most of the characters can do even half competently. Annabeths step mom, Hazels mom, and the Grace's mom come to mind immediately. Leo, Frank, and Percy's moms are the only non-demonized motherly figures and they all sacrificed everything about themselves for thier children (this will come up later).
Femininity in the riordanverse is equated to helplessness, ficklness, and vanity when in reality thats...well that's just misogyny, baby. We're either lead to look at the feminine women in the story with contempt or pity.
We are never asked to sympathize with Hera, Demeter, Amphitrite, Aphrodite, Kihone, Gaia, or any of the other women on Olympus in the same way we are narrativly forced to pity Apollo Hermes or Posideon through the storys language and structure. The only goddesses we are not actively in contempt with seem to be Athena (who is a well written flawed character in her own right) and Artimes who just serves as a basic girl boss no boys allowed figure.
And once a girl is no longer needed for a storyline they get shafted HARD and either die or go solo in a "I need no man" form of feminism. Once Thalia is done threatening Percy's manhood and role in the prophecy she runs off with the hunters as to not get in the way, Rachel is turned into the oracle who can't date anyone so Percy doesn't have to make a decision, Reyna (my poor girl) also becomes a hunter for some fucking reason (I could go on about this but I wont), and Zoe, Hazel, Bianca, and Selena all die horribly as the cost of thier own mistakes- theres an implicit theme of female sacrifice for the greater good (most often the good of a male character) that's present here. Bianca dies for Nico, Hazel for Sammy, and Selena for the memory of Charles.
Of course there are really well written girls in PJO, but there is an overarching problem with the way "Strongly Written Female Character" alwsys seems to equate to "I'm not like other girls, so im strong" and the way that girls are activly written in a way that leaves them supporting and caring the burdens of their male costars. It's not entirely Rick's fault of course he's an old man I don't expect him to write 12 year old millennial girls with skill, but it is something that gets me about his work and has since I was that age myself. Sorry if this wasn't as coherent as I wanted it to be, It's late and I'm not going to proofread this bc it's PJOblr.
TERFS DNI 💖
#personal#pjo#idk man its just icksvill#catch me getting a martyr complex at like 10 because all my favorite girlies die horribly <3#and the boys die with more dignity before anyone brings that yp#*up
How about #47 A moment you wish could have happened?
As I've been pondering this question it turns out I have more than one moment LMAO strap in!
#47 A moment you wish could have happened or in this case three:
- A moment that did happen but I wish was extended being the Lisa Lisa vs Kars fight. I wish so badly that Lisa Lisa could have had a chance to shine more, I want to watch her kick ass! But the way it ended so quickly, by Kars cheating, outsmarting a hamon master with practically no effort always felt cheap to me.
Joseph is great and all, and I get that Kars being the final villian they'd end up fighting in the end but Joseph fights about every single antagonist in part 2 (which I think is kind of a shame when it comes to the potential of its supportive cast, like Lisa Lisa and Caesar) so that's something that has always disappointed me. It'd be cool if Lisa Lisa injured Kars badly and that's when he uses the mask with the red stone of aja, for example, then stuff goes downhill.
- Avdol backstory. Polnareff and Kakyoin got some backstories told, Polnareff especially having a more direct tie of his story into the present events of SDC but we never got anything about Avdol. I wish we could have had a moment where we got to see more of Avdol's past, his family, his childhood, maybe a certain event or just about anything really! I would have gladly taken it.
- That one scene from the battle tendency manga where Joseph and Caesar go to a post office and almost get into a fight... It's a funny moment with those two I am forever saddened this never got animated </3
#I could go on and on about this actually there's lots of moments I wish could have been made or added in if taken out the anime#Things like more moments spent on Giorno's ties with Dio would have been interesting to explore#Or the backstory of Jonathan and Danny becoming friends in the Phantom Blood manga albeit short would have been nice to add in#Kind of ended up with both canon moments and made up moments but either way thats how I feel 😔#Blueberry asks
Just finished Bees and yet again the Bree + Roger subplots are the least interesting to me but I’m glad we got more of William and of Ian and Rachel! It kinda dragged on a bit with the day-to-day monotony of the Ridge (which I usually like but this was a lot) but overall I enjoyed the book!
Major Spoilers under Read More
John Cinnamon is my new favorite character! He is such a sweet young man and I think I’m going to go back and read the Lord John series now too! Because it felt like I was missing something with the whole Percy subplot in MOBY + this book having not read it.
Like lowkey why is everyone other than Jaime and Claire’s immediate offspring (sans Willie) more interesting? Idk how Diana managed to create such an unlikeable little family unit with Brianna, Roger, and their kids (tho I do like Jeremiah, not so much Amanda) but such a rich supporting cast!
Also why give Brianna a heart condition if it’s just magically going to be fixed by her being pregnant?!
I will say though it’s interesting that Davy isn’t a time traveller like his siblings. Makes you wonder if Fergus (who I am also choosing to believe is La Comte’s son) is a traveller or not and what this means for Claire and her family. Also makes one wonder if Percy’s family that he married into or even Fergus himself might be one of her ancestors 👀
The Richardson subplot is…😬 Why would you make an abolitionist the main villian! Not to mention he has African American ancestry! Diana WTF? Your racism is showing in this book 🤦♀️ Not to mention the plot with Ulysses/Joseph Stevens… like Diana why???
I am also choosing to believe that Totis is Ian’s son! He is such a sweet addition to the household, even if the reasons were a bit strenuous in the book. Though I am also intrigued by the Jenny/Joseph Brant’s Uncle romance. Though I don’t know why Claire didn’t tell Jenny that the war would be over in a matter of months? 🤔
Makes me wonder why she’s decided to kill off Percy and what this means for the Percy & Fergus storyline.
And why in hell Hal want to see Ben! Like I was under the impression that Amaranthus was in cahoots with Ben and then she went to see him and saw him with a other woman which came out of nowhere. Honestly it would have been more interesting if she’d known and went be with him and left Trevor with the Willie and Lord John. Bye maybe the whole widow thing is a ruse and she lied about the other woman and maybe she is in on it?
Though it makes me wonder if Hal made the poison to poison Ben…
Like I wonder if William will take Amatanthus up on her offer and pass off his title and estates to their kid. Like obviously that’s what Ben did with her and why I thought that Amarantus was more involved with the plan than we saw (esp with her reaction when she went to see him) though I’m dubious about whether her account of the events is true or not.
I mean the way she brazenly suggested the plan that Ben had gone through with seemed suspicious to me!
I think Richardson is involved with Rob Cameron in some way and that the gold is going to come into play. Again, weird choice of villain with Richardson being an abolitionist but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
And also WTF happen to Ulysses? Is he dead? I know Duncan was one of his men but like why didn’t you just tell him she was in Nova Scotia? Just be vague and then he might not have tried to ya know oust Jaime and that whole skirmish!
Like I want to see less filler (or just more with beloved characters like Lizzie!) and more streamlining from the editor on the major plot points!
Also WTF happened to Buck!
