I hc wash and south (and by proxy, north) as all being ODSTs prior to pfl and one thing I really like about hcing them as such is that it adds another layer of depth to why they were all chosen to be a part of the recovery force.
ODSTs are a special forces unit within the marines, and they're generally used as force amplifiers and in high risk or sensitive operations. two such scenarios include the recovery or recapture of personal and high level assets behind enemy lines, as well as deep reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. ODSTs are also used in politically sensitive operations, which pfl was following the crash of the moi.
so basically, who better to be on the recovery force than former ODSTs who already have a background doing the kind of work that would need to be done?
this also adds to some of the tension between north and south as well imo, as while they're a great team who are capable of working together they clearly have two very different skillsets—south is not portrayed as someone who has the patience necessary for long reconnaissance missions, and part of the reason why team b failed so spectacularly is because two snipers and an intelligence operative are not a good choice for a smash and grab mission. had north been replaced with south things would've probably went way better for them, because south is actually fairly similar to wash in her "get in, get it done, get out" mentality, though where wash comes off as more methodical and is willing to take that "wait and see" approach, south throws caution to the wind and has a "we'll cross that bridge when we get there" approach.
this is probably why wash and south were (on paper at least) going to get eta and iota—south would've benefited greatly from having an ai that was afraid and anxious as it would force her to slow down and think things through more, and wash getting an ai that was happy and cheerful would force him to loosen up a bit and be less high-strung and serious.

asoryuu have the vibe of longtime friends and everyone around them assumes that and when they find out they met like, last year, i can see it putting people off. whys the top law student (carries a sword to school, weird) so close with the space case english major (super confident about the most random of skills, sort of cool)?? its strange but its cute, i guess.
theyre just so compatible with each other on a surface level, but not on a deeper level. because they want to be everything they see in the other, they want to be good for one another despite the fact that they are meant to grow to be two completely different people. they love the idea of each other. the tenacity to insist on holding on when any other regular person would let this grow them apart is what makes them them.
where do you go after you realize that the person who thought you loved was reflecting back at you the things you wanted to be? do you stop needing them and tether the link holding you? (no, because ryuunosuke is too compassionate and stubborn for that.)
what do you do with yourself after you showed the ugliest parts of your soul to the only person who would deign to carry it with him and let it shape him? when you marred it before entrusting it to him? do you spend the rest of your life apologizing, and hoping they still see the you that you both liked better in your little cracked pieces? (yes, because kazuma is too proud to give ryuunosuke up)
to go across the world for someone once isnt something done out of only love or selflessness. but it is pretty close minded to think he wouldnt do it for you again, and again.
theyre both the most stubborn people ever.

My ex best friend 'didnt want to get involved' when her girlfriend was bullying me and it took forever and some therapy but I realized it was because she didn't respect or care about me just like you said. If you aren't willing to stand up for someone you care about you don't really care all that much
i am so sorry anon :/ yeah i used to try to justify this mentality bc it would hurt much more to accept the painful reality that someone simply does not care. i’d just be like “well not everyone has a confrontational personality” “maybe they’re just innately more levelheaded than me” bc when i was younger i used to be so much more hotheaded. i def mellowed out the older i got, but confronting someone was never a big issue for me, so i’d always write it off as different dispositions / personality types. i’d literally gaslight myself into thinking i was in the wrong for taking an issue w this, especially due to the hyperindividualistic american culture i grew up in. it’s only in recent years that i realized this was just a symptom of not caring enough about a person to share in their burden. and that has caused me to reevaluate so many of my friendships

random but is anyone else into yosurise but in a doomed kind of way. like kind of one sided. like a yosuke is into rise in a puppydog kind of way and rise keeps trying to find a relationship but can’t and finally decides to give yosuke a try because at least he’s a friend and she knows he won’t try to take advantage of her being an idol etc. And yosuke is ECSTATIC and wants to give her the world but in an unsustainable kind of way, a desperate “i don’t deserve her but she’s giving me a chance and i need to do anything i can to keep her happy” kind of way. And rise is so flattered and like yosuke is nice but she can’t match that dedication, no one can or should, but it’s all so one sided and she feels so guilty about that but she doesn’t want to break his heart or be “mean”. all while yosuke is becoming almost self destructive by trying to give her “what she deserves” but it’s an unhealthy level of dedication and it’s honestly hurting both of them
