NORTHERN FASHIONS IN ASOIAF

The fashions of the North largely consists of furs and wool, due to its often cold climate. Northern culture is largely based on Ancient Scottish culture, and Northern fashion often have Ancient Scottish, Nordic and Slavic motifs.

I researched for two hours about the knee coverings (Bixi) and then found out I was researching the wrong thing OTL 😭

The pleated half-sleeves are super cute. I love throwing it on with any Hanfu outfit from this period just to add some flair. Essentially people were trying to go for "flowing, floating, whimsical" so the long sleeves, the draping knee coverings, the trailing waist ties (didn't draw it in) was all to emphasize you're walking on air.

The author's experience of the production process is as follows:

1.Concealer powder for women in the Northern Wei Dynasty. After experiencing the entire production process, my first impression: the rice soaked for more than 20 days is really smelly! like the biological weapon my painful expression doesn't require any acting skills, but the rice soaked for many days is very soft and sticky, and it is very convenient to rub or grind it by hand (Women with no strength like me can quickly grind it into pulp in 5 minutes)

2.The process is complicated and the production takes more than 30 days. The resulting "rice powder" is indeed delicate. Although its adhesion cannot compare with today's cosmetics, it is still very good as a basic makeup powder for women more than a thousand years ago.

Finally got the hang of northern fashion in ASOIAF - so here are some first sketch for some northern ladies' looks.

This was an attempt at drawing a woman dressed in traditional clothing in an art nouveau style. The clothing is based on the northern and southern dynasties of China

襦 vs 褶衣 Ru vs. Xiyi

Apart from the Ru (襦), the Weijin + Northern/Southern Dynasties also saw another style of upper wear called the Xiyi (褶衣).

I searched for hours how to differentiate Xiyi and Ru, and I'm STILL not quite sure I got it right. The only big difference I noted was that the Ru shirt had the thick piece of fabric right across the waist, whereas Xiyi didn't. But if it's worn tucked under the pants/skirt, I don't really know how you'd be able to tell the difference.

If anyone has more info on the differences between these two please let me know, I'm so confused xD
