LWJ Cosplay Log - Master Post
Tumblr media
Making Lan Wangji
(AKA My Lan Zhan Cosplay Log)
This went from a historical project to cosplaying all the Hanguang-Jun, Lan Wangji in existence!  The main concept is Lan Wangji’s (LWJ) novel/manhua/audio drama design.  As the project started pre-pandemic, I didn’t consider the butler or dragon au in the design.  That would be too much.  There is a dash of videogame in him since there were some details I liked in that model.  If the title is “Mo Dao Zu Shi” then I have incorporated Lan Wangji’s description and concept arts into my design.
Lan Wangji as known in The Untamed was generally avoided save for a tiny nod to the show’s Gusu Lan Clan.  “Mo Dao Zu Shi” Wangji and “Untamed” Wangji are distinct in my opinion.  Neither is superior from the other, just different enough that I need to pick one interpretation to play with.  The actors of Untamed, especially Xiao Zhan, really claimed the characters as their own and portrayed them wonderfully.  Wang Yibo’s Wangji is his Wangji, I won’t interfere that.  If you want to see that interpretation of Lan Wangji, then go watch the show.  It already exists.
A few caveats before you dive in:
1)     I am not a seamstress or tailor so I don’t know all the proper sewing terminology in English or any other language 2)     Also, modern romanization of Chinese confuses the shit out of me, a native speaker, so apologies for any spelling mistakes.  The Yale Romanization made so much more sense but then China thought they understood the English alphabet better than native English speakers so here we are.  Do as the Romans do, I guess. 3)     I am not a historical costumer either so all my info come from conjecture and research 4)     I am not a Chinese historian but I like to think I know enough about my history and culture through osmosis and the hell-hole disguised as Chinese school to talk about it 5)     I am not trying to make an authentic historical costume, I’m trying to make an anachronistic fantasy costume. Historicity went out the window the minute LWJ and every adult character decided to have their hair down.  I did try to make a semi-historically accurate version?  Depended on the mood at time of construction. 6)     I suck at being Chinese apparently so that will be my safety net if everything fails horribly :P
The Lan Zhan Cosplay Log Layer 1:  Undergarments! Layer 0:  Hair, Props, “Cheating,” & Overall Stats

I found some examples of Chinese students wearing Hanfu in foreign countries to show cultural confidence. I think this is a good form of presentation, and maybe I can do the same for the final work.

In the Tang Dynasty, women who usually wore bird crowns were mostly dancers, and the bird was often in the shape of a peacock or a parrot.
The historical records mention the bird crown worn by women during the Tang Dynasty several times. For instance, in Du You's Tongdian (Volume 6, "Music Section," regarding the "Sitting and Standing Performers"/《通典》乐六“坐立部伎), it is recorded: "The Guangsheng music(光圣乐) was created by Emperor Xuanzong. The dancers, eighty in number, wore bird crowns and multicolored painted robes. They were dressed in the style of the Upper Yuan and Shenshou festivals, to sing of the emperor's achievements." Similar records are found in Xin Tang Shu /《新唐书》(Volume 22) and Taiping Yulan by Song Li Fang: "When Emperor Zhongzong ascended the throne, he created the Longchi music/龙池乐, with twelve dancers, wearing lotus crowns and stepping on special shoes, performing with elegant music, though without bells. He also created the 'Shenshou music/《圣寿乐》,' in which the female dancers wore five-colored embroidered robes and performed.
Additionally, he created the 'Xiao Po Zhen music/《小破阵乐》,' with dancers dressed in armor. Lastly, the 'Guangsheng music/《光圣乐》' had dancers wearing bird crowns and painted robes, to sing of the emperor's accomplishments."
Taiping Yulan (Volume 568, Music Section 6) records: "Empress Wu had the 'Bird Song for Ten Thousand Years' music composed during a grand banquet in the Eastern Xiangluan Hall of the palace. At that time, birds capable of speaking were kept in the palace, and they often repeated 'Ten Thousand Years.' This music was created to symbolize this. There were three dancers, with large red sleeves, adorned with painted birds resembling the 'quail-like bird' (quyu). In present-day Lingnan, there are birds similar to the quail that, when raised for a long time, can speak, and they are called 'Jilie'/《鸡烈》."

Flora, Luna-Corona: A Physical Meeting Point of Floral Fashion History, Chinese Zanhua & Untold Stories
In the past few months, I have been working with the Gibson House Museum in Toronto to develop an exhibition inspired by Chinese zanhua (lit. flora-wearing; 簪花) & floral fashion around the world, and this art installation is titled "Flora, Luna-Corona 团花·月華".
Tumblr media
For folks from Toronto, Canada:
Accompanying the exhibition, from 1-4pm on this Saturday (July 22), I am hosting a two-part event with my collaborators, Ange & Alaina, at the Gibson House Museum:
1. Artist & educator Ange Loft will lead a tour of the Gibson House, grounded in Kanien'kehá:ka and Haudenosaunee symbolism around florals, farming and fabric.
2. Next to the crabapple tree and being surrounded by the fragrant roses and lilies, we will gather for a casual Q & A. Myself, Alaina, and Ange will share stories and cultural perspectives from the Chinese/Cantonese, South Asian/Pakistani, and Haudenosaunee/Kanien'kehá:ka communities.
Particularly, during the exhibition tour, I will discuss how “Flora, Luna-Corona” is a meeting point between languages, literature, and the on-going history of gender-fluid fashion and 2SLGBT+ identities.
💐
Join us for a floral field trip this Sat at the Gibson House, or take part in a scavenger hunt by following the guidance of a "floral moon", floral scents, and flowery fashion.
Due to capacity limit, please pre-register by email [email protected] and mentioning RSVP to "Flora, Luna-Corona in the Subject line.
🍏📍 Gibson House is next to TTC North York Centre station. 🕒 Special Event: 1-4pm on Sat, July 22 🕒 The exhibition also opens 10am-5pm, Wed-Sun, till July 30. 🌈 The exhibition is wheel-chair accessible and on the 1st floor.
“Flora, Luna-Corona” is part of the Toronto History Museums’ Artist Mentorship Showcase: Pride with Mentor Ashley Mckenzie-Barnes. Experience a range of art projects at 10 history museum sites featuring emerging and mid-career artists from the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
