Ok five minutes into Firefly and it's ten times more promising than The Expanse (the characters are wayyy more compelling & charming). Waiting to see if Firefly will shoot me in the chest with a whole lot of futuristic linguo thought when we get to doing some more worldbuilding. But I won't drop The Expanse quite yet...

The fact that Dawn's bouts of rebellion and empathy are also just a part of his genetics & a result if his environment all together. And it can either be crushed with him becoming Day (with all the arrogance & power of that position), or him getting off course & leaving Empire (or dying in the attempt). Inflexion points. Always the vulnerable & most sympathetic. Most pitiful maybe.

Can't properly explain how I fucking love the Genetic Dynasty in Foundation, the three emperors and how fucking pitiful it all is behind the glamour of power. Like Day being both the most powerful & vainglorious & disagreable of the three at all time but also having the most soul wrecking moments ; walking the Spire only to fake his vision and Demerzel seeing right through him and being like...man it's sad how fucking empty you are. It's sad how underneath it all you're nothing, you're no one. Soulless. Then he comes home and he's been changed and stands up to Dusk, decides to not kill Dawn. Sees him as a son. Then sees him die and sincerely mourns him. You hate him, then you pity him, then you hate him, then you pity him...

How they've all got soft sides and moments of humanity, but they're always Empire. They're not the same but also they're the same. If one went wrong they might all go wrong. If one was fucked up who's to say the new ones won't lose their humanity too went they grow old ? Only time will tell. And time almost always does tell.
