thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.
#not to say i don't enjoy when they're portrayed as a weird set of uncle and nephew - that's really fun too#i think their history and shared connection to delgal would be a key element to their dynamic no matter what#and it's something they would tryyyy to make work at some point. for lack of other options.#it's not smn i take too seriously either! but thinking about it for more than 2 minutes makes me go oh yikes#i do think they could be family - i'm a certified sucker and sap so i want them to be - but#growth means moving past that more conventional way of thinking of family#side note as someone with a large extended family i DO have uncles who are younger than me lmao#but i'm viewing the whole uncle + nephew thing with thistle and yaad more symbolically for the purposes of this#additional note the fantasy age-fuckery and power dynamics at play means thistle has been in an actual position of authority#over his younger family members like any older relative would be in spite of his being quite young and immature#so. no. don't try to be his uncle anymore. and he isn't your nephew. and oh god he isn't your dead brother let it go. stop with the labels#don't try to resurrect that corpse (< writing them trying to resurrect that corpse as we speak)#not sure if these tags are coherent pero basta lang. yaad and thistle stay complicated forever that's all i want#feel free to chime in or disagree as i'd like to crack into this like crispy lechon and my opinions are subject to change#roomba media#thistle#yaad#thistle & yaad#melinis#dunmeshi#dunmeshiposting#dunmeshi spoilers#thistle dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi#edit: changed some inaccurate wording in this one whew. english

Oh my goodness gracious, I am several different types of broken rn. I just watched episode 7, and I NEED TO RANT AND I'M PROBABLY GOING TO LEAK A SPOILER OR TWO.
Okay, firstly, the first half was hilarious, just FX and MQ being absolute comedic gold. I completely forgot that FX was afraid of women since I read the novels a long time ago, but it was hilarious. He looked so disgusted. Them getting in funny situation is good as it is, but the animators did a fantastic job at the facial expressions of FX, MQ and the background heavenly officials who were hearing all of this play out. I laughed at it all, and poor SQX being embarrassed, tired, and exasperated at the dice shenanigans that he had to deal with earlier.
But, funny as it was, the second part was my favourite bit.
I literally froze when I saw Fang Xin. It was beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Knowing what that blade had done, the history it has made it so much more impactful since this is the first time since this is the first time XL is seeing it in 600 years or so while this is the first time HC is seeing it in around 800 years if I remember it correctly. It is such a metaphorically heavy blade, and seeing its design and animation is so very beautiful.
Meanwhile, LQQ commented on how different XL seemed, and XL responded on how this is how he always was, just that LQQ never knew it. Even still, XL felt like a teacher to LQQ, so I feel like no matter how separate XL tried to be, he did very much care for LQQ as I'm sure the next episode will show.
But I think the major part that got me was LQQ's speech about not becoming full of resentment or like XL, which is one hell of a gut punch. Once again, bravo to the animators for that little cut to XL's eyes widening. I always knew LQQ was a parallel to XL, and it is most clearest here. In that moment, XL knew that he was LQQ's White No Face, and that, in LQQ's perspective, where he started the worst moments of his life in a twisted attempt to make LQQ just as resentful as him. It was a fantastic comparison and a terrible irony to XL, something he clearly acknowledged as he laughed and tried so hard not to cry. XL's comparison to the White No Face is something that will probably hurt every time, since to XL, only he and JW know about it, and he's unable to share the burden of what happened, which probably just hurts even more. The parallel between LQQ's words to XL and XL's words to White No-Face is so painful, especially to XL, who thinks that it's his burden to bare, and it probably hurts more when you consider that he literally just got Fang Xin back.
And throughout all of this, the one other person who knew all of this, and wanted to share the burden was standing right next to him, looking hurt and about to cry as he watch his most loved hurt. HC knew the significance of it all, and it was a stark reminder of all the times he failed to protect the one he loved the most, and since this right after he accidently hurt XL as well, this must be painful for him too. There is so much foreshadowing for all the donghua-watchers only and so much tragedy underlining this scene.
The part where XL hesitated to hold Fangxin, when you know everything, hurts so much. It caused him so much trauma, wielding it would have just been such a painful reminder.
Let me move onto fangirling before I cry.
Firstly, I was waiting for the daruma doll bit for a while. He looks so cute and angry at the same time. It's adorable, and I laughed when LQQ side-eyed HC in the daruma form.
Secondly, why do HC and XL still look so HOT EVEN AS THE WEIRD CANDLE DEMONS, OMG???? HC with horns, blue skins, and black sclera is going to haunt me for DAYS, and XL looks so good with it as well. The candles on their heads look so funny though.
The next episode is for the Qi Rong simps, and I would like to remind everyone that Qi Rong, heathen that he is, is still physically hot, even if I have the visceral desire to punch him.

🍺 - How does your muse feel about the consumption of alcohol? Do they drink? Are they a heavy drinker, or are they on the lighter side? What's your muse's favorite alcoholic drink?
I mean, I’ll drink a beer or two, but hangovers aren’t worth getting drunk. And I have bad hangovers. I get migraines on my own; I don’t need outside help.
I’m not a lightweight, but I’m definitely not heavy either. I’m somewhere in the middle, I guess. Now Asgardian mead on the other hand…
I like Heineken or Corona the best.

@bumblingest-bee EEE OK BUT REMEMBER U ASKED FOR IT puppets are different from actors because…they’re not people 😀🤪 “an actor is and a puppet represents” is the best i’ve ever heard it put! because of that the gift of puppets in the 21st century is that audiences have already accepted that the work they’re seeing is alien, abstract, absurdist, and most importantly symbolic
<- one thing i say a lot is that when performing Shakespeare you have to make the words sound like what they’re describing…if you have a line about someone being wretched you have to make the word wretched sound wretched. if that makes sense! essentially what i’m trying to say is that Shakespeare’s language IS highly symbolic in its nature. and when you consider adaptations of certain plays like R+J, McB, or Hamlet that already hold highly symbolic places in the cultural zeitgeist, it starts to make sense to have symbolic figures performing the text. i guesssss what i’m trying to say is that puppets, being purely representational, communicate universal ideas the same way that Shakespeare’s highly symbolic and representational language communicates universal ideas!
the biggest issue i encounter when teaching/talking about Shakespeare to my littles (i’m in the process of workshopping a Shakespeare TYA program, for context! ☺️) is the language barrier. if audiences have already accepted the convention of puppets performing the text, they’ve already accepted that the play they’re about to watch will be highly symbolic, absurdist, alien, etc., which means they’re more likely to be willing/able to brave the barrier and focus on what the text represents rather than the literal meaning. ALSO the gift of puppets post-method is that they’re no longer trying to mimic human movement - INSTEAD we’re focusing on the fact that the gift of puppets is that we can make them move in ways far graceful & sillier & more symbolic than human bodies can. movement is one of the ways we can communicate what Shakespeare’s language means to a modern audience, so having the ability to REAALLLYYYYYY play with it is such a cool tool & opportunity!
since an actor is and a puppet represents (paragraph 1 throwback ✌🏻), one of the challenges is communicating the tragedy of Shakespeare’s works with them. you’re never going to empathize with a marionette Hamlet the same way you empathize with a real person playing Hamlet, because there won’t be that same level of…humanity (no duh)…part of what makes the tragedies so um tragic is that there’s a level of relatability. anyone can be driven mad by grief! anyone can be young and in love and make naive decisions! since the tragedy is brought about by human flaws, the mistakes made are ones any human can make. that is what’s far more helpful about having human actors!!!! puppets do have a certain level of inherent grotesqueness which can be helpful in communicating tragedy, but this often leads to tragedy being expressed in a more ironic & post-modern way. i know that a lot of people believe tragedy is dead (NOT me) and im sure the Puppet Brand of performance works more with their ideas of how tragedy should be expressed. but for me, i think it offers a really unique & cool challenge! how can we get audiences to empathize with puppets the same way they empathize with human actors? is it even possible? if not, how do we find a way to maintain a level of relatability even when our actors are made of felt & sticks?
AND THEN there’s the concept of mixing puppets with live performers a la Audrey 2 (or the muppets) which makes me even more insane. beyond just using puppets to represent the more whimsical non-human elements of the Tempest, Midsummer, etc. there’s the idea of using puppets to represent the non-human elements of like, Hamlet. how does the play change when Hamlet Sr. is a puppet? is he performed by a puppet when viewed by Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo and performed by a human when Hamlet addresses him? how does the play change if R+J are the only puppets? if they’re the only humans? what if KL is represented by a puppet up until Cordelia returns? EEAAUAUGHHH!!!!
i don’t know if any of this made sense. i am really quite normal about puppets & Shakespeare i promise. overall i think puppets are THEEEE MOST FABULOUS tool when it comes to making Shakespeare accessible!!!! ANYWAYS i never claimed to be scholarly shakespeare i claimed to be SPARKLY shakespeare so hopefully this made enough sense to be at least a little bit glittery!
she says “i am so normal about the use of puppets in Shakespeare!” and she is also a liar

I would like to make the joke that this winter you could sacriligously call Shen Yuan a Jesus figure who deserves a spot on your mantle and tree.
And why would we say that?
1) Father Son and Holy Spirit
Okay so we acknowledge the very real fact that Airplane is God of this world and what is the system if not an abstraction of the holy spirit? And I know what you're thinking how does this apply to Shen Yuan? What is his transmigration into Shen Qingqiu if not a Virgin Birth into a son of Airplane's writing who in PIDW is the narrative justification for all of Binghe's hate and also the eventual release of Binghe's trauma and corruption. Both a sacrificial lamb if you will.
2) resurrection
OK so while his deaths (for the sake of comedy accept big dick death) are all for binghe's sake in the end could one not argue strongly that these deaths carry the symbolic nature of self sacrifice, revival, and of course stigmata. The first death is of course the one that starts the novel where the humble Shen Yuan asks for absolution for the characters and the world of PIDW with his astute words of "dumbfuck novel dumbfuck author" in which he notes the fault of Lord Father Airplane and is born so he may die at the hands of his disciple who will ultimately betray them. His second death comes 3 years later and is the process once makes a statement of absolution towards his betrayer and to once again spare his fellow eleven other peak lords and and binghe who you can read as the 12 apostles. He then dies again in order to save both the world and in the process and absolve guilt and sin in the name of love and forgiveness.
3) stigmata
Much like our favorite anime protagonist from Saint Young Men our boy Shen Yuan experiences multiple cases of gaining stigmata. Stigmata in this instant referring to multiple injuries that Shen Yuan receives in one particular hand and visually in the animated adaptation appears to be the palm. Shen Yuan's hand which was used to read the sacred PIDW text and give head pats to his disciples was injured in saving Luo Binghe multiple times. In first gaining a deadly poison that seals his fate, then in being infected with a disease that ravaged the meek and innocent, third he gets plant spores that need to he repeatedly burned out of his flesh. These stigmata are symbols of his devotion and faith.
4) kindness to snakes and the less fortunate
In showing kindness to a snake Shen Yuan is able to restore Zhuzhi-Lang back to a more desired state much like the way Jesus cured disease. His efforts also resorted in saving the life of Liu Qingge who is restored much like Lazurus. These miracles act as proof of Shizun’s miracles. Proof of his acts as savior
5) god why have you forsaken me
Multiple times throughout the novel Shen Qingqiu can be seen raging against the system as well as Airplane which as we've discussed are both aspects of God. Jesus himself raged against God when forced to confront his own death and spoke of feeling betrayed and forsaken. The same can be said for the way Shen Yuan feels towards both his fate or and for the state of PIDW and Airplanes shitty writing.
6) throwing the money lenders from the temple
Honestly this is just an excuse to make a joke about Huan Hua palace and killing the old palace master.
7) knowing his own betrayal
A large element is that Judas's betrayal is not a surprise to Jesus. It is an inevitability he sees coming in much the same way that Shen Yuan sees Luo Binghe trying to kill him in revenge coming. There is an acceptance of an inevitable betrayal that both figures share
7) Gay
Much like Jesus our boy is gay and problematic

⚠️ TGCF SPOILERS.
I love how Hua Cheng surrounds Xie Lian by the number three — defeats 33 heaven officials in his honor, makes Xie Lian call him "San Lang" (lit.: 3rd son), sends 3 thousand lanterns to the sky in his name, dies 3 times for him... —, because 3 is a number considered lucky in Chinese culture, so, symbolically, even with Xie Lian renouncing his own luck, luck follows him because Hua Cheng follows him too, and not by coincidence destiny, but as a consequence of his choices: for the prince who chose the 3rd cup, for the god capable of ascending 3 times, for the man who always traced a 3rd path with his own values and ideals instead of pursuing what the gods say or what the ghosts say, Hua Cheng is his good karma.
