I feel obligated to tell you i stayed up till four am reading a bunch of you stories, because they're incredible. Also feel like saying that the only other times ive stayed up this late in recent memory is when i was binge reading one piece so take that as you will. That does sound likely. My grandpa was actually in charge of the easter pageant for a few years down there - I actually broke my arm on the little pony Mary rides to Bethlehem. I was trying to keep my little brother and sister on it by using my arms as a seatbelt, but when they fell off anyway, I just had to kids land on my arm from 6 foot drop and got blessed me with a third elbow. I had some crazy ideas on how to become a professional baseball player with it, but my dad insisted we go to the hospital to do drugs, and when I woke up they fixed the damn thing. Could've gone pro.

I'm glad you had a good time reading it. I don't know which gender I'd imagine the great lakes as to be honest. I just know that their thing with Michigan is beautiful and would be very distracting should I ever become an astronaut. I don't want to make fun of people for wanting a better world, and I would actually say I did a botch job on my response. Didn't realize it until several hundred people got mad at me. I know I write well, and the catch .22 of that is that people assume that my ability to read the room is probably higher than it is.

Anyway. I don't fault them for getting mad. Not my finest hour.

And I'm not a snob about run on sentences by the way. English teachers want to make rules about how you write and rules to follow, but that's because they need to grade by rubrics for it to be fair. It turns an art form into something mechanical though. Just make it natural and the rest comes after.

I had read your wrestling story. I had not laughed so hard in a great many years. I thank you for this, though I am also sympathetic to your misfortunes.

There was enough going on that I was naturally curious if you were or are Mormon, a curiosity born from being someone who grew up as such myself (something that being queer doesn't really bump up nicely against, though you hardly would need to hear such a thing from me), and which visiting your blog quickly answered for me.

Just read your post about Atlas Shrugged (my condolences, comrade) and I must, simply MUST ask if you've ever heard of The Cobra Commander Dialogues? It asks the very important question "what if Cobra Commander was there and found this all at best inane and stupid, and at worst it offended his villainous sensibilities?" As someone who hasn't read the book OR watched the cartoon I found it very entertaining!

I just took a peeksies at those - they're beautiful. Dialogue is a great weakness of mine, and it is hard not to be a little envious of this writer. Thanks for sharing this with me.

Your story about the breakup and the olives and the Slim Jim's and your dad made me cry -- not like, tear up, but an actual good cry for a couple minutes. I don't totally know why I reacted like that but I definitely felt better in some way afterwards. So, thanks. I think I'm gonna remember that story for the rest of my life.

The story stuck with me both because everyone involved was good. My ex's dad, the neighbor, my dad - everyone was doing their best. And it was true, wasn't it? Brains are good at remembering bad things. It's a breakup. And it hurt like hell. But the pain of that memory carries with it this feeling well, even when things suck, people don't. I also liked this view of my dad parenting so consciously. It wasn't a background thing to him. He thought a lot about what he was doing, and what he was saying, and how he was treating me. I owe him big for that.

So, I think teenagers like being able to convey fuck you, I do what I want through their clothes. There are punk scenes for that, and goth, and other things. My way of doing that was just dressing aggressively badly. Mismatched plaids and sports jackets meant for people half my height and twice my width, purchased from goodwill, and basketball shorts mixed with knee high socks and on and on. That was part of my teenage rebellion.

Anyway, I added the shoes in and just wore mismatching shoes to make the outfit worse, both because it was a fashion crime, and because it was a litltle inside joke with my friends who knew the story. I wound up losing them over the years because I would use the left sets as makeshift projectiles.

Eesh. We're getting to wrestling asks. Look, when we all signed up for wrestling, we signed up to wrestle girls. It's part of the sport. If your boundary is to not wrestle girls, the way you maintain it is by not signing up for wrestling. The point of my response, which I did not convey clearly enough, was to ask for forgiveness for failure. A middle school boy falling short of the right thing is different from a middle school boy seeking to do the wrong thing, and as a bar, it's...

It's the kind of thing I'd hope people would go, Well, they're shits, but I can't hate them over it. Don't defend us as having done the right thing - we did not. Just, have some grace for the weakness of teens. They're still growing, and if you put too much pressure on them, they'll crumble. And we crumbled.

My parents moved to Utah after I went to grad school. I am eternally grateful that my dad turned down that promotion the first time, when I was about to enter high school, because I didn't want to lose my friends and move to Utah and go to school there in the 80s.

So I escaped, but I've seen a little bit of what you had to go through and I've heard from some of my mom's friends that she's made there how hard it is when you don't conform. I'm glad you were able to escape and that you have your own life now.

I bet that girl remembers you and that when these topics come up, she's not as willing to throw people like us under the bus without question.

you did the best you could in a very difficult situation, and by being you, you helped some of the next generation realize the lines they're told about queer people may not be true.

There may have been a closeted or questioning kid in that class, reassured by your example or simple refusal to show prejudice. you don't know what positive impact you had on those kids, but you went in with the best intentions you could and I have a feeling you did more good than you know.

This is actually one of the earliest asks that I didn't want to answer because I didn't want to lose it. For anyone else looking, they're talking about a story I told about teaching primary as a Mormon.

I hope she does. I don't think anyone in the ward ever actually knew I was bi - I kept that very close to my chest. Even after I left. The kids certainly didn't. But they knew that I loved them very much, and they apparently felt strongly that I was a good person. I think the lesson I gave them was that a person can leave the church and still be good. I hope that serves them well.

Pterodactyl screaming at your boyfriend is a power move. You should do it more often. I am going to answer more questions that way. I had a customer with a masters in geology ask me why I could not provide their specified sample rate, sample times, and sample counts, and I had to explain to them that you can actually only pick two of those numbers, and the third just happens, and that the numbers they gave me did not work that way. It's like saying "I need to drive 50 miles, and I want to drive at 15 mph for two hours." I'm like, yo, go faster, or drive longer, but you have given me a multiplication problem that does not work. And they kept arguing with me, despite the actuall oscilloscope screen telling them, hey, bozo, that math does not math, and I kept trying to reason with them, when in fact I should have just pterodactyl screamed.

No, I totally get it. Mormonism robbed and scrambled the iconography of a lot of religions, but the two it yoinked the most from are the Masons and the Jews. Like, it is my culture now, but I will acknowledge that my culture is what would happen if you asked a 14 year old conman from NY to skin your culture and wear it. I can't imagine how weird it must be to hear us talk.

No, for two reasons.

The first is that it was not effortless. It was effortful. I had to sweat to get them down. I had to fight them into me. I have a very vivid memory of finishing the eggs, and then leaning over to tie my shoe, and feel the eggs start to actually tip out of me, not even as like, puking, but like emptying water out of a boot. I actually had to sit for a half hour after that for the eggs to actually stay.

The second reason is that eating is easy for me, but gaining muscle mass is not. If I work out like crazy and lift weights, I get very wirey, but I never actually get big. I tried bulking one time, and my muscles stayed the same size while the 20 pounds I gained just went right to my belly and I looked like a grape on a toothpick. Very wild experience. Made my peace with being a skinny nerd.

Okay wow I have so many crack headcanons so prepare yourself. Take every negative thing I’ve ever said abt fanon and throw it out the window, this is about to get so unserious

• Hanako is a fudanshi. This applies to the whole Toilet Gang (except Nene would be called a fujoshi), they’ve got a little book club. Hanako is the most insane about it tho

• Aoi and Akane are a himejoshi/himedanshi couple

• Lemon and Akane smoke weed together on a regular basis (throw back to the time I looked up “slang words for marijuana” for my Terukaneaoi fic and ended up sounding like Skyler White)

• I feel like an average conversation between the Toilet Gang is the most insufferable, out of pocket middle school humor you’ve ever heard in your life. Those four make South Park look like a kids show

• Akane has a random lock of Aoi’s hair on a shelf in his room

• Since the Minamoto father is absent and the mother is dead, Tiara just kind of assumes Teru and Akane are her parents. Instead of correcting her on this, Akane decides to be the dad who stepped up

ok u know what that tag WAS bait, thank you for taking it. technically speaking these aren't works dealing strictly with labor in historical fiction, they are my four treasured examples of BUREAUCRAT FICTION (so not NOT about labor in history?) i was gonna try to make this post pithy and short but then i remembered how extremely passionate i am about this microgenre i made up. so sorry.

bureaucrat fiction is not limited by genre or format but criteria for inclusion are as follows: long and detour-filled story about functionary on the outside of society finding unexpected success within a ponderously large and powerful System/exploring themes of class and physicality and work and autonomy and what it means to hold power over others beneath the heartless crushing wheels of empire/sad little man does paperwork. also typically long as hell. should include at least one scene where the protagonist is unironically applauded-perhaps for the first time in their life-for filling out a form really good. without further ado:

soldier's heart by alex51324. the bureaucracy: british army medical corps during wwi. the bureacrat: mean gay footman/new ramc recruit thomas barrow. YEAH it's a downton abbey fic YEAH it's a masterpiece. i've talked about it before at length, my love has not faded. the crowning moment of bureaucracy is a long interlude where thomas optimizes the hospital laundry (this actually happens twice or maybe three times)

hands of the emperor by victoria goddard. the bureaucracy: crumbling fantasy empire some time after magical apocalypse. the bureacrat: passionate late-career clerk from the hinterlands cliopher mdang. i reread this book every winter bc it is as a warm bath for my SAD-addled brain and every time i neglect all my responsibilities to read all nine billion pages in three days. it puts abt 93% of the worldbuilding momentum into elaborating all of the ministries and secretaries and audits necessary to run a global government and like 7% into the magic and stuff. there are also several charming companion novellas and an equally long sequel that dives more into the central relationship between cliopher and the emperor which i highly recommend if you like gentle old man yaoi and/or magic, but there's more bureaucracy in HOTE.

the cromwell trilogy by hilary mantel. the bureaucracy: court of henry viii. the bureaucrat: thomas cromwell, the real guy. curveball! it's critically acclaimed booker prize winning rpf novel wolf hall! mantel is really interested in particular ways of gaining and maintaining power in delicate and labyrinthine systems like the tudor court, specifically in strongmen who use both physical intimidation and metaphysical manipulation to succeed. under these conditions i do think my best friend long-dead historical personage thomas cromwell counts as Bureaucrat Fiction (as do danton and robespierre in a place of greater safety. bonus rec.)

going postal by terry pratchett. the bureaucracy: fantasy postal service of ankh-morpork. the bureaucrat: conman, scammer, and little freak moist von lipwig. this is definitely shorter and lighter than the other three entries on the list, sort of a screwball take on the bureaucrat. but the mail is such a classic bureaucracy thing? who doesn't love thinking about the mail? also contains a key genre element which is a fraught sexual tension with the person immediately above the protagonist in their hierarchy, who is also their god-king and boyfriend-dad. you can't tell me vetinari isn't torturing moist psychologically AND sexually.

oh im so glad you picked up on that too! theyre literally ideological foils to each other in that episode: even as they bond over some shared values and trauma (and attraction), the key conflict between them is that gwaine's life experiences have made him a staunch anti-royalist while merlin is prophecy-pilled into believing he lucked out with "the good ones". from the moment merlin learns gwaine's dad was a knight he relentlessly uses this fact to convert gwaine back to catholicism nobility so he can stick around as a knight of camelot, which merlin rationalizes as a kindness because gwaine seems lonely and leads a dangerous life.

but the way gwaine reacts to merlin's attempts at persuasion is conflicted and suspicious because "what's this guy's agenda?" and i don't think that ever fully lets up. even as gwaine concedes that arthur is one of "the good ones" i do believe it's just for merlin's sake because there are no "good ones" in a class war lol he sees how rooted merlin is in his beliefs (not to mention the repressed sexuality) and wants to reassure him that even though he's in no rush to join him, he's not judging him either. and merlin is relieved and happy with this outcome because gwaine kindly didn't call him out on the homosexuality and he stopped trying to threaten his beliefs. that whole episode is the equivalent of being a leftist on a dating app in 2022 wondering how low you'd stoop for a cute british twink that's unironically mourning queen elizabeth. but i digress.

merwaine is toxic yaoi to ME because not only does it start with them butting heads ideologically, merlin's ideology WINS and gwaine abandons everything he stood for to become a knight in the hopes of finding love and community. and then of course by the time s4 and s5 roll in there is so much grief and shame and fanaticism in merlin that he refuses to indulge, refuses to go off-script and allow gwaine to be anything except a tool and a weapon. which is obviously not the vibe gwaine was getting off of merlin in s3, but by his last episode he's surrendered himself to the reality that that's all merlin allows himself to want from him to the point where after merlin rejects him one last time he literally gives him his sword and lets him walk away. grim!

then again, they're both complicit in making each other feel worse! gwaine sounds like he already has some mistrust of magic when we first meet him, and by s5 he's parroting camelot-isms about magic, "you are a sorcerer and a heretic", and killing sorcerers who did nothing. and then merlin quietly marks their grave and keeps repeating to himself that "it'll get better one day" while refusing to listen to anyone who has any criticism whatsoever.

and to circle back to the point of "they figured each other out": THAT'S WHY IT'S SO POTENT. TO ME. merlin knows that gwaine loves him best of all but whenever gwaine tries to act on his love merlin recoils because of catholic fanaticism he's convinced everyone he shares his secrets with will die. the repression is off the charts. and gwaine resents repression but he's forced to abide by it because he's disarmed by merlin's apparent selflessness and bravery (and the fact that merlin gets to live a life of adventure and self righteous fighting while not actually being a noble - that's literally gwaine's dream!) but i simply cannot look at gwaine in honestly ANY of the seasons he's in and go "oh he doesn't mind :) he just wants to be involved!" the man practically died of a broken heart. merlin broke his heart. and gwaine let him, he was also an active participant! i like to overanalyze eoin's acting decisions and try and pinpoint moments where he bites his tongue lest he says something that goes against merlin's (and the show's) ideology that will cost him his place. which is not unlike hiding a secret identity if you think about it

He’s kinda like a dad to the gaming pastas. Like, none of them had great childhoods (hence how they latched onto the games so hard as a coping mechanism) and Herobrine is like, Tim and Brian’s age. (The reason I consider Herobrine to be the dad is bc he’s the og Game pasta if you ask me bc if his iconic he is and how long he’s been around compared to the others.)

he once pulled someone from irl into Minecraft, locked them in a Bedrock box with no doors and made it so they couldn’t die of hunger. Why, you may ask? Lost got a girlfriend. Herobrine was happy for him at first, until Lost came to Herobrine saying that the girl had pressured him into doing you-know-what in the bedroom despite knowing he’s asexual. The girl is still there to this day, slowly going insane with no way of knowing how long she’s been there of if/when she’ll get out with but the sweet release of death to look forward to… but Herobrine made sure she won’t even get that luxury.

8. A headcanon you have (that you havent seen talked about yet)!

An actual normal headcanon:

I think that Edwin had a sibling growing up! I initially thought a much-older brother, but I now think it's fun to consider that his parents weren't happy with him as heir, so they had another kid and got....the sweetest little girl there ever was. So they reluctantly resigned themselves to Edwin inheriting, only for him to up and die on them. WTF, Edwin. Their daughter inherited by virtue of being the last one standing, then did Crazy and Unbelievable things like getting a college education and becoming a feminist, and the Paines get that as their legacy whether they wanted it or not.

Baby Sister Paine was also more attached to Edwin than he was to her, mostly because she thought he was the only nice person in their damn house. He, on the other hand, was never cruel but was also very aware that she was supposed to be his replacement. He would've warmed up to her if he'd had the time. But. Well, you know.

Charles didn't have any siblings, but he DESPERATELY wanted some until he got older and realized what they'd be subjected to, thanks to his dad.

He did, however, get some of that fulfillment via regularly babysitting for his aunties and neighbors. (Aunties in the common immigrant sense, which can sometimes mean his actual aunts, but also friends of his mom so close that they're basically sisters.)

Charles was the kid who would get invited out with his friends and be like "oh, I'm babysitting that day, let me see if I can bring my baby cousin to the park with us" but like....without the slightest hint of bitterness or reluctance. He was always genuinely and unironically delighted to bring any kiddos along, and if anyone was a heel to those kids, he would've thrown hands. And he probably did a few times.

Also, I can't say no one's talked about it, cause I wrote an entire fic where I mention that I think the doll-headed spider had a "toybox" where it stuffed Edwin when it had to go places.

But I will add that (sorry Blue, you already know this) that I regret saying Edwin was only put in the box four times. <3 I think he should've been in there more, actually. I think the Doll-Headed Spider put him in there like once a year or something so it could go run errands. It had a schedule. Edwin looks forward to his annual Designated Box Time.

1) If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I have a laundry list since I've never left the country. But to name a few... London, England; Scandinavia as a whole; Rome, Georgia to see the Creel House if it ever becomes an AirBNB so I can stay in it for a night; Montepulciano, Italy; and some tropical island, idk which one.

2) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I'm lucky I live in a state that's very... we'll say progressive and it's well known for being so, and I feel very comfortable here. However I've lived here for basically my whole life (wasn't born here, unfortunately) and I keep saying I wanna live somewhere else for a while. Boston's very high on my list since I love the culture and history. But I feel like living in England or even a small Italian town would also be fun.

3) What's your favorite color in general? To wear? To use in artwork?

In General - Sea Foam Green (the color of my walls; I provided the exact paint color name)

To Wear - My favorite clothes are in a Grey-scale

For Artwork - I love shades of blue, but in particular dark blue

4) How did you get into writing?

I've always been fascinated by coming up with alternate endings, but my hobby really took off when my middle school best friend and I wrote some... really god awful Star Wars fanfics lmao. We spent soooo long on those, meeting up via Google Docs to write them after school for months. I cherish the memories, not the fics.

I got further into it when I started writing Avengers fics which then just evolved from there... and now I unironically write Twilight fanfiction so you make the call on how this went for me lol.

"Wonder" by R.J. Palacio is one of my all time favorites and I recommend everyone to read it who hasn't. Beautiful story and I share a name and a hobby with one of the characters!

"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Musical is absolutely fire, too.

My favorite of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series is "A Storm of Swords," the third one

Neil Gaiman's works are amazing, but one of his littler known books is "Odd and the Frost Giants" and it's a very funny story. (I have bought a copy of "Good Omens" to read, don't worry, it's just with most of my other books in a box for the summer for apartment move-in. "American Gods" is also on the list after my dad read it.)

I'd be dishonest if I didn't include "Doctor Faustus" by Christopher Marlowe because it's such a goofy little play. I'm glad my poor life choices led me to it 👍

I should also mention that my favorite Shakespeare play is "The Scottish Play"

Claudia Gray's Star Wars tie-in, "Bloodline" is a fascinating read as well, about Leia in the New Republic era navigating her political career and personal adventures while trying to hide that she's Darth Vader's daughter.

Similarly, as a kid I was obsessed with the series of short novels, the "Strange Case of Origami Yoda" book series by Tom Angleberger. Just middle school kids balancing their personal weirdness and hard-ass school policies with Star Wars through origami.

Jennette McCurdy's "I'm Glad My Mom Died" was also a really good read.

Another autobiography I'd recommend is Carrie Fisher's "The Princess Diarist." I miss that woman very much.

...Alright I'm just gonna come out and say it, for all its faults, I like "Breaking Dawn" and I'm actually hunting for a thrift store copy as we speak. 6) If you could take any trait from any animal, what would it be and why?

I'm basic, I want wings. Bat wings (like Emily tbh) cause bug wings are too fragile and I don't wanna deal with feathers like on bird wings. Why? Cause even if I'd be a flightless creature, it'd look awesome, that's why.

7) What's your favorite type of cuisine?

I'm a whore for noodles. So Italian and Chinese. We've gone to this one family-owned Chinese place for so long and so often the owners know us by name, they have conversations with us when we eat there, and are always commenting on my brother's height since they remember us from when we were tiny little ones (he's over six feet tall now)... and to the point, their chicken lo mein is to DIE for.

8) Do you have a favorite superhero character?

I have a couple, but in particular I like Loki, the Osborns, Wanda Maximov/ff, and, obscure character alert, Verity Willis from the Agent of Asgard comics because one, sans tattoos, she's very cosmetically similar to me with the glasses, dyed purple/red hair, etc. two, she's snarky and just kind of a badass, and three, she's Loki's best friend and how many people can say that they made friends with a guy like that?

(I don't wanna say her tattoos inspired Emily's, but I feel like they'd get along swimmingly)

9) Do you have a favorite time of day? Why?

I've always liked it when the sun's gone down but the sky's still blue, especially in the summer when here it cools down to perfection... oh dammit, that's technically twilight, isn't it?
