no water in the gardens, no flowers in the water.
300 words. AO3
Have you head, have you seen Sect Leader Jiang and Sect Leader Jin, whenever she comes to Koi Tower? He blushes like a boy hoping for.a moonlight walk still when he greets her.
Hearing the gossips speak, then, one would think the affair a certainty, a sordid thing.
But their walks were done in daylight, with courtiers spying behind walls and screens, and all they spoke of was the counting of grain and the hunting of foul beasts.
They made a point of it. Deep bows when trading courtesies during Cultivation Conferences, deep but equal. No excessive toasting, and no goading to be tolerated - it never was.
No room in the Jianghu that Jiang-zongzhu could not quiet. The gossips said that, too; and mostly that, after some years passed, and old betrothals were forgotten into ancient history.
Always in company, for of course Jin Zixuan was forever surrounded by a cloud of disciples and aides, thick as dragonflies in summer at first; and then fewer, a well-pruned collection of peony-yellow robes, those few that had served in the Sunshot Campaign with him, and survived his father's underhanded displease in the years after victory.
Jiang Yanli, all knew, was forever accompanied by her sworn sword whenever she left Lotus Pier under her brother's keeping.
The Yiling Patriarch was a terror, only kept half-tame beneath her chiding glance; and he was a devoted chaperone, also, as much as he ever had been.
Devoted, in making certain no spies hid in the eaves, none besides the high moon glinting off the golden walls. Wei Wuxian leapt to his guarding place, scratched his nose. Tilted his ear towards the whispers of ghosts and demons, tried his best to ignore the murmuring. A-Xuan, A-Li. The rustling of reeds, a sound like water running, rippling.

Jiang Cheng did his best to not press his fingertips together, something he did when he was nervous but had to avoid in order to appear more serious, especially at that moment, when he was discussing something important.
“That's why I came to see you, Daozhang. I don't know why this is happening to me, but I hope that you know what is happening to my core…” The he sect leader said, looking at Xiao XingChen's blind and covered eyes. As if he was going to realize...
"It has come to my knowledge that you are-... that you were the shidi of Wei WuXian, my martial nephew. Please, you don't have to act so polite with me" Xiao XingChen smiled, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
Jiang Cheng closed his eyes momentarily when the cultivator mentioned his brother-… Wei WuXian. An indescribable feeling flooded his chest, and he couldn't exactly determine if it was negative or positive.
It had been two years since his death, but Jiang Cheng could see his blood-smeared body disappear over the edge of the cliff every time he closed his eyes. With clarity. Especially his expression.
No.
“As you wish, Daozhang. So, do you have any ideas?"
XingChen only moved his face so that his eyes were facing the ground.
“I don't know, Sect Leader. Those symptoms could mean many things… There really are many possibilities,” the cultivator wandered aloud.
Jiang Cheng's brow furrowed .
"Many possibilities"
...So there was for sure at least one with a bad ending.
"But since you've come to see me specifically, I think you have an idea of what could be happening. Am I wrong?" Xiao XingChen carried on.
He, in fact, wasn't wrong.
Jiang Cheng had been searching, relentlessly searching every library he could set foot on. Although he had found several possibilities, there was one that, although it did not seem very likely, was the most accurate due to his symptoms.
“Daozhang, I think it has something to do with the legacy of Baoshan Sanren's students. I came looking for you because you are one of the few that are still out there, and also are quite famous in the cultivation world for it.
Xiao XingChen nodded gravely.
"I supposed. Everything you've told me... The energy full episodes, the burning feeling inside you, the crashes that follow... Sounds very similar ike what I had to endure"
"I have a question, Daozhang" Jiang Cheng couldn't contain his doubt "It's just that I've never been a student of Baoshan Sanren nor am I a descendant of any.
Xiao XingChen seemed curious about it, which was good for Jiang Cheng. If he was curious, he would help him sort it all out.
"Well, Sect Leader, it is not necessary to study with the Master or descend from someone who has done it... There are cases, very rare, in which she manipulated a Core that later had that reaction. Had your ever...?"
The question was hanging in the air. Had he ever been injured so badly that he had been taken to none other than Baoshan Sanren?
“During the Sunshot Campaign…” Jiang Cheng began. It was going to be complicated. He sighed
"You may have heard about the annihilation of my clan in the hands of the Wen. They kidnapped me, and in an attempt to extract information, they ripped my Core out."
"Oh"
Even with the top of his face covered, surprise was visible on Xiao XingChen's face.
"Wei WuXian took me to see Baoshan Sanren. We pretended that I was him and asked her to restore my core. It went well, so that's probably it."
Jiang Cheng relaxed as he connected all the dots. He finally knew where it all came from, apart from the fact that if Xiao XingChen, who had also suffered from it, was in front of him, it meant that he would not die or anything worse
However, the aforementioned did not seem to be very sure about anything. Instead, he seemed even more curious.
"Are you completely sure that the one who helped you was my Master? I don't mean to call you a liar, but..."
The tranquility that had been in Jiang Cheng's mind was gone as quickly as it had appeared.
"But?" He allowed himself to get a little impatient.
Xiao XingChen moved his head to the side.
"Well, I think Baoshan Sanren is not capable of doing that."
Jiang Cheng's impatience turned into disbelief.
"What?"
"That's right, Sect Leader. I'm sorry, but my master is not capable of such a feat. What's more, she is incapable of even doing slightly easier things. For example, when I asked her to heal my dear Song Lan's eyes, she couldn't. She could only exchange my... Oh."
Xiao XingChen suddenly went completely still. He pursed his lips, as if trying not to say something. That only angered Jiang Cheng, who just wanted to hear about his strange condition.
"What's happening?"
Xiao XingChen did not reply.
"Daozhang?"
Nothing.
Jiang Cheng could feel his frown growing more pronounced
“Xiao XingChen!” he yelled, forgetting all etiquette. The rising anxiety in his chest was about to burst.
"Jiang Wanyin, are you in a headspace where I could give you information that could possibly hurt you?"
'What kind of question is that?'
The change from formal title to courtesy name had not gone unnoticed by Jiang Cheng, who could only imagine the severity of the situation or the circumstances that had provoked such a change.
"Right now, the only thing I want is to know what is happening to me. If I have to get a bit scared to achieve it, then so be it."
Xiao XingChen sighed. He didn't seem to know how to put whatever thoughts he was having into words.
"Just to make sure, before saying anything to you, could you let me touch your wrist for a moment?"
Jiang Cheng was even more confused.
"Of course?" The sect leader stretched out his arm, wrist up, in the direction of the cultivator.
Xiao XingChen just grabbed it without another word and spent a few seconds with his fingers sliding over his wrist.
He withdrew them, an indescribable expression on his face.
"Sect Leader, are you completely sure that it was Baoshan Sanren that you saw?“
"What's the point of asking that question again!?”
Jiang Cheng had already totally lost his patience, and his fists were clenched tightly. Xiao XingChen seemed not to want to mince words.
"I'm not asking just because I want to. From what I can feel... Jiang Cheng, the golden core inside you is that of your brother's"
Jiang Cheng was about to respond with the "I don't have a brother" he was used to when he realized.
Wei Wuxian.
...
No. There was no way.
Jiang Cheng herad himself muttering a weak "What?" to the man in front of him, who only repeated what he had previously stated.
"You have Wei WuXian's golden core"
Jiang Cheng looked at him, with a shadow in his eyes and his whole body shaking.
"It's a lie. It's a lie. It's a lie. No one can rip out a golden core and stuff it inside another person. There were no doctors with Wei Wuxian, it couldn't have happened, without any…"
A female face framed by soft dark hair and a Wen robe appeared in his mind.
Wen Qing.
No. No. No. It isn't true. Everything is a lie. You are making it up.
Wei WuXian wouldn't have done that, never. He was so proud of his cultivation. There was no way, he wouldn't have been able to use suibian!
Another image appeared in his mind. Wei WuXian, in his last months of life.
With not even a sword scabbard dangling at his hip.
Jiang Cheng heard himself scream, and felt his trembling hands cover his wet eyes.
He felt someone touching his shoulder and speaking to him, but he paid no attention.
He only thought of everything that Wei WuXian had sacrificed for him.
Everything that his brother had sacrificed for him.
And now it was gone. He didn't have his brother, his sister, not even the peacock or his parents. Only a baby nephew that would grow without parents.
He was alone.
SO. UM. YEAH.
Credit for this amazing idea goes to @mikkeneko

Am reading a most delightful MDZS modern AU featuring an autistic character by the super talented @scarlettohairdye and now I'm thinking: Am I autistic? I remember feeling just like the character about things in the world as a child except that I was conditioned to pay attention to my facial expressions very closely.
You learn something new every day indeed.
Anyhoo, do go and read the fic. It's such a delight!

Plot Bunny: Wen Qing Reincarnates
Wen Qing reincarnates into the Nie sect almost immediately after dying. She grows up Nie Lian and has a great aptitude for medicine that surprises her family. As soon as she starts learning to use a saber, she realizes the problem the resentful energy will cause. She has an intuitive knowledge of resentment she cannot explain. She does experiments that help her immediate family, but her activities do not draw much other attention. Nie Huaisang is aware of her talents, but he is also very distracted with revenge/justice and feigned incompetence. He supports her by not opposing her.
Then, when Wei Wuxian returns to the world, Nie Lian wakes up with the memories of Wen Qing. She is only 16 years old, but she is now both Lian and Qing. She's less guarded than before given how much support and protection she'd enjoyed as Lian, but she also gets a bit sharper and less patient as the memories settle in.
At first she does nothing. Then everything at the temple happens. Then she learns Wei Wuxian is alive again and her brother still lives. Then she learns the Golden Core Transfer is no longer secret.
She requests permission to visit Yunmeng and Gusu under the guise of expanding her medical knowledge. In reality, she wants to see Jiang Cheng for herself and find some way to apologize now that he knows the truth. Then she wants to hug her brother and hit Wei Wuxian for wasting her and the rest of the remnants' sacrifice.
She introduces herself as Nie Qinglian. She refuses to deny either part of who she is. While she is in Yunmeng, Jiang Cheng is injured. His usual doctor is absent (doing rounds along the pier probably) so Qinglian steps forward and takes command of the situation. She helps him. Then, when she thinks he is asleep, she talks to him. She apologizes for the Core Transfer and for keeping Wei Wuxian in the Burial Mounds for so long. Then she says she wishes she had kept the comb.
The problem is, Jiang Cheng had been asleep, but her voice coaxed him awake. Given how confusing her words were, he'd continued to feign sleep. When she mentions the comb, though, his eyes fly open.
"Wen Qing?"
And this 17 year old Nie disciple stares at him, her face slowly turning pink. "You were supposed to be asleep."
"Who are you?" he demands.
"Apparently I've reincarnated," she tells him. "I regained my memories last year. From what I understand, it happened around when your brother returned."
Jiang Cheng snorts. "Of course this is his fault."
"Would you like me to leave?" she asks, dryly.
"No," he says, sitting up too quickly and wincing for the effort.
"Lay back down. I didn't spend the past five hours saving your life only for you to undo all my hard work."
He lays back, but reaches out to catch her hand. "I'm glad you're here."
"I am sorry," she says. "I don't know if you heard that part."
"You can make it up to me."
"How?" she asks.
"Stay," he says with a yawn. "All I've ever wanted is for people to stay."
"All right," she says.
When he awake again, Jiang Cheng realizes that Wen Qing or Qinglian as she is now, will want to see Wen Ning. And Wei Wuxian. And that Lan kid they're pretending isn't actually a Wen.
He calls for some paper and writes his brother a letter.
A few days later, instead of a reply, Wei Wuxian descends on Lotus Pier with Lan Wanji, Lan Sizhui, and Wen Ning in tow. They all have a very tearful reunion. Qinglian both looks nothing and everything like Wen Qing. She is so much younger than he is now. He'd thought nothing of her when she had only been Nie Qinglian, but now that he knows she is also Wen Qing, he wants to hold her and never let go.
Qinglian does stay in Lotus Pier. Nie Huaisang has figured out who she is and does not insist she return. She and Jiang Cheng engage in a strange courtship where both sides are very uncertain of the other's regard. He doesn't want to trap her. She worries he can only love part of her. But after about a year, a few days after her 18th birthday, they share a kiss and he asks her to marry him.
She accepts.

Fic Rec
Lament, by @kianspo
The premise of this fic is that WWX never comes back. LWJ as well as LXC and LSH feature. I thought that LXC’s and LSH’s parts would focus on LWJ’s grief, but this fic does something different with them.
I generally don’t want to read about the fragile beauty of making peace with grief. To me, reading about that feels more upsetting than whatever caused the grief in the first place, even though acceptance is healthy and necessary. In fact, perhaps it’s because it’s healthy and necessary that I find it so upsetting. If I’m going to read a sad fic, I want to wallow in agony, not be healthy! That said, this fic handled that differently than I was expecting, and made me feel good about everything in the end, which is pretty nice for a sad!fic.
Here are the things this fic made me think about. Slight spoilers for the story are contained herein:
LWJ. I’ve talked before about how one of my favorite things about LWJ is that he moves on. I always think of that as part of his resilience and strength, but in this fic, his decision to move on isn’t about strength, really. It isn’t a decision at all. It’s because he’s an animal.
The fact that LWJ is an animal isn’t explicitly mentioned in the fic and isn’t really what the fic is about. But the fact remains that humans are all animals, and animals are biological, and biology is a product of evolution, and life that survives happens to survive because it has mechanisms to survive. Humans like to think that we are stories, and we tell ourselves stories of who we are, and when our story is destroyed, we think that we should be destroyed too.
We forget that we have bodies, and our bodies want things for us—not just food and water and sleep. Our bodies want us to love our brothers and teach our children. Our hearts and minds want that for us, even when sometimes our conscious understanding can’t. That’s what LWJ in this story is.
LXC. Because I thought this story would focus on LWJ’s grief, I didn’t consider the range of time it might cover, which extends past the events of canon. One of LXC’s lovers murdered his other lover, among other things. LXC has his own grief, and he handles it in a completely different way than LWJ, because grief takes many forms and many shapes. The story doesn't directly discuss all the different ways we handle grief but instead shows it beautifully.
LSH. I might’ve told this story before, but once when I was maybe eight, my mom was telling me about something she and her best friend did in high school. I’d never heard of this best friend or ever even thought about my mom in high school. I asked her if she still talked to her friend, and she said probably not. I asked why, and my mom said she’d moved away and had a different life now.
Later that night I thought about it, and I cried and cried. I was heartbroken that there were things about my mom I didn’t know. I was also heartbroken that she had a different life now, that because she had her life here with me and my dad and my brothers in the place where we lived, she couldn’t also have a life with her best friend where she used to live. I was also heartbroken about the fact that I couldn’t witness or be there for the life that she had had. Basically, I was heartbroken over the fact that time exists and mind melds don't.
I think the shattering revelation that people have their own internal lives is something that’s kind of hard to hold in your brain at all times. I think it’s particularly hard for children, which makes it almost impossible to do when it comes to your parents. They’re just . . . there. They’ve always been there. A fact of existence. They do the things they do, and sometimes it’s very hard to understand that they do them for their own internal specific reasons, rather than that’s how the universe itself was built.
This is LSH in this fic. He continually is faced with the fact that his father is his own person who is built on his own history. LSH wonders about it, and yet his mind also slips off of it, because that’s just the way his father is.
But as we grow older, we often begin to understand our parents more and more. In so doing, we often begin to understand more and more about ourselves, and that’s also what this fic is about.

“When I figure out what emotion I’m feeling you will be the first to know,” Wei Wuxian says, as evenly as can be expected for someone who has just learned that their very taciturn best friend that they desperately want to fuck is a secret floozy.

Me currently devouring @cicerfics MZDS 'verse fics. So good.
There’s fanfiction…. And then there’s FANFICTION. The kind of shit you happen upon at like 3am or some other ungodly time because you were trying to find a fix for ur fixation at the time and you are just SUCKED IN and every sentence feels like a line of cocaine and it has quotes and imagery that permeate your brain and it’s the shit that sticks around in your consciousness forever and it never goes away and it’s always going to be one of Those Fics.

Jiang Cheng is a character that I feel is misunderstood by many; he is often trapped in hard places and has nothing but terrible choices, thanks to his parents' conditioning and his responsibilities.
Hence my soft spot for fics where he's shown to be a competent sect leader and has an opportunity to heal with Wei Wuxian.
This is a lovely fix-it fic that is such a satisfying read. So much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
