What made you ship it?

It was the most interesting relationship in the book. I'm a sucker for childhood friends with broken promises, for grief, for misunderstandings over loyalty and love, and for relationships whose resolution in canon is bittersweet.

It still took some time and effort before I started really shipping it. I was theoretically open to shipping it but I hadn't yet read fics that really sold me on it (this was in 2019, I think). Then as an experiment I put a WWX-inspired character in the setting I was GMing for the JC and JYL NPC stand-ins to have him to play off of. Turned out I did ship them.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

It's never simple with them. It's always fraught. They love one another but they also resent one another. Hunting demonic cultivators is about WWX still maybe being alive. Maybe JC can bring himself to kill WWX this time, or maybe he can find a way to bring WWX back home and forgive him. WWX promises to be with JC but he ends up promising that he won't stay ("like my father served your father") but he didn't mean it with an end. the mess that is the fraughtness of WWX's liminal space when it comes to his social rank.

love hurts, what hurts is love.

the fact that the one 'leading' is WWX, not JC, going against the accepted social order. (tbh, if that wasn't the case, I probably wouldn't be into the ship.) it paints such a picture of WWX being so charismatic, and JC being so taken with him, that JC falls into being WWX's sidekick. no wonder YZY was awful about it.

JC keeping Chenqing like a mad dog and keeping Lotus Pier WWX-safe. I. god. JC rating WWX's attention >>>>>>>>>>>>> JC's self-respect every time, in every way. Amazing.

it's incredible to me how WWX asks JYL about love in a scene framed in a manner to make it subtextually point in the direction of LWJ (it's mdzs; the canon pair in mdzs is wgxn; there are no - explicit - love triangles in mdzs; and yet even WWX's original crush on LWJ is, uh. informed by JC and how WWX is with JC and the fact that LWJ is New and Not The Son of WWX's Benefactor. this is normal.), where it's apparent that WWX is scared of being in love because it changes how you act, it's a limit, it's a cage, you're limiting yourself for someone else - and then WWX does something for JC that is everything he was scared of.

and it does ruin him! it's terrible! so his romance with LWJ is everything his feelings for JC weren't. He's not the one doing the protecting. LWJ doesn't question him. There are no expectations of anything, no discussions of the future, no thoughts of society. LWJ is just such a comfort, just a good thing WWX gets because he wants it. Also LWJ isn't emotionally taxing af (this is a big one). (WWX kinda ends up YZY-ing himself at the end of the book but I'm not thinking about that.)

WWX's utter toxicity toward JC. not a iota of respect for either JC or JC's boundaries to be found, except when convenient for WWX.

they both really, really believe that WWX is better than JC in every way. it's very cool

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I love the joke that chengxian isn't incest but both of them wish it were, but I think the only time one of them wished they were brothers was JC when he decided to sacrifice himself for WWX and he was lying in bed making morbid jokes. At least sacrificing yourself for your brother who is the better cultivator and can lead the sect would be simple. Forgivable. Good.

I also think they might grow to think of one another as brothers at some point post-canon, that's a sort of reconciliation that might happen, but to me it's key that during canon they don't know what they are to one another, they just know they're scarily, terrifyingly important, and there's no word for what they are to one another.

JC refused shixiong-shidi (in a shocking reversal of their normal dynamic, I think he forgot he did that and spent roughly two decades feeling insecure and weird that WWX doesn't call him shidi) and they can be nothing else, socially speaking. The love that dare not speak its name, if you would. And at that same time post-canon they could also decide that what they're to each other is that WWX used to be in love with JC, and maybe JC still is, and they're not brothers. Or maybe both! The point is, the definition of their relationship is uncharted waters and they never thought of each other as 'brothers' (much less called each other that).

2) WWX is incredibly bitter and resentful of giving his core to JC and that colors everything he thinks and says about JC afterwards, including after he's returned to life. Basically, he gave, and gave, and gave, and felt there was no gratitude, and he's unable to live the life he wanted, unable to reap the promises life made him, and JC isn't any more agreeable or tractable than before (less so, in fact!). It's not fair.

day 28: a fic over 100k

I’ve had a rec for Can't Sit Still by wilteddaisy (E, 193k) sitting in my drafts for so many months now (probably over a year? le gasp!) so when I saw this prompt I did not think twice. I rarely read anything over 50k these days, but I was (still am) so thirsty for some good Draco/Blaise food that I jumped right into a 200k rollercoaster, and what a ride it was! this will be a bit longer than my other posts since I’m using bits of my long-ass drafted rec, so please bear with me:

I’ll preface this by saying “this might not be the right fic for you - and that’s okay!”. yes, the story starts with Draco falling for his straight best friend and getting into an ill-advised but 100% Slytherin “friends with benefits” sort of arrangement with Blaise, who then marries someone else. oh, the devastation 🥲 this is not a sad fic per se, but Draco’s journey is bittersweet all the same. one thing I can promise though, this is most definitely a Drarry romance. there’s this… subtle sweetness and generosity in their dynamics, even before they start fucking, that made my heart skip a beat and go “yes yes yes, this is what I want for them!!!!”

flatmates, powerful Harry, pining galore, found family, hot & intimate smut, a story after my own heart! and once you jump in, it’s impossible to resist the pull of these witty, vibrant and complex characters. as a Blaise slut I was immediately seduced by this peculiar mix of arrogant, tender and nonchalant. it’s so toxic and complicated, I love it. as for post-war Draco, he’s a fascinating figure: snarky and melodramatic but openly soft and vulnerable in a way that caught me off guard, gosh I’m so tender for him. he’s quite similar to Harry in his yearning for physical and emotional connection, and I love how this fic explores the complicated entanglements between loneliness, attraction and dependency. I’m also so weak for a pining! Harry and here he’s dialed to 11: hungry, possessive, touch-starved, soft and infatuated all at once. the slow burn is superb with cinematic sexual tension and emotional catharsis. and don’t get me started on the smut! I could wax poetry about the morning after scene intense, hazy and self-indulgent sex with a starving Harry and a pliant Draco. absolutely breathtaking!

surprisingly, this is also a fun read! the humour is smart, subtle and permeates the dialogue in ways that made me giggle every now and then. this fic also benefits from multiple POVs and a fantastic supporting cast, including Aurors Ron & Pansy and Draco’s hilarious house elves who steal the scene every time they show up. everything comes together in a charming and immersive love story that will tug at your heart strings and make you cheer for Drarry, for Draco, like you’ve never done before. a love letter to all of us who have fallen in love with someone who couldn’t make us happy and had to embrace the grief of letting go, learn how to remake ourselves, and take a leap of faith to let someone new in. give this story a chance and find yourself falling in love with your OTP all over again 💜

First Matsuda! Since this has been primarily a dn blog for a while now ahaha.

favorite thing about them: I think out of everything, what I find to be most admirable about Matsuda is his ability to persevere & continue on despite knowing that others see him as useless; and despite himself even having internalized that opinion of himself. It's bittersweet, the way he tries to let it roll off his shoulders & not let it dissuade his enthusiasm for his work. He tries so hard to be like "if this is who I am, then so be it," and then embrace that role for all it's worth in the name of the objective.

least favorite thing about them: Does this mean least favorite thing about how they're written; or thing I'd like least about them if they were a real person? Regardless, the one & only scene of Matsuda that I don't really care for is the one where he seems gleeful at (what he thinks is) Light cheating on Misa with Takada.

favorite line: "I have to kill him. This guy has got to die!" CHILLS every time.

brOTP: Not exactly brotp, but I do enjoy the father/son dynamic between Matsu & Soichiro. Also, another not-brotp, but I think the Matsuda & Mikami dynamic could be interesting, as they both come to terms with the mutual loss of their pedestalled icon. Perhaps a wary & melancholic understanding, that they can't find with others.

OTP: I loveee toxic Matsulight. I love the idea of Light being attracted to Matsuda through a subconscious sense of empathy over their similarities, but also being in denial that such similarities exist. I also love the idea of post-DN Ide patching Matsuda up after Light's imposed destruction, taking care of him & helping him heal. Honestly, I could ship Matsuda with anyone because to me he is just so lovable~

nOTP: Sayu/Matsuda. Just because for personal reasons, I want Sayu to escape the narrative 🥺. She still has her entire life ahead of her, and I want her to have the chance to branch out & heal & become a new person. I don't want her to feel like she has no choice but to cling to the people she knew before everything changed, as a way of trying to hold onto a previous, untraumatized version of herself. I don't want her entire life to be mired in decisions based in trauma & grief.

random headcanon: Idr who it was, but someone mentioned they headcannoned Matsuda as secretly really enjoying being Misa's manager & that he considered switching careers after the Kira case. I really like this one, I feel like Matsuda was actually a really good manager. He had the right amt of enthusiasm & booked Misa some really good gigs.

unpopular opinion: I'm not sure if it's an unpopular opinion, but how Matsuda is highly influenceable & lacks conviction/faith in his own ideals! To quote you since you summarized it so succinctly, he's "heavily motivated to act in the way that makes the people he looks up to proud, rather than his choices flowing primarily from his own principles necessarily." I feel that because of this, while he is very sweet & wholesome, he tends to edge more towards morally neutral than morally good for me, and has a capacity to be swayed towards bad.

song i associate with them: I'm not very good with songs for characters, but perhaps Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls for post-dn Matsu? A bittersweet but hopeful song about trying to find your way out of the muddled grey and black and white, and trying to come to terms with the fact that there may no answers as to the "why".

favorite thing about them: It's hard to put into words, but I really appreciate Killua's vulnerability, both physically & emotionally, especially in juxtaposition with his combative strength. I find it poignant to the themes of hxh that Killua's special combative abilities have come at the expense of his personal & bodily autonomy, and that this is shown through implication to be the terrible thing that it is. I also really love that despite trauma, he is able to let himself just be kid & form meaningful connections & allows himself to find joy 💜

least favorite thing about them: Related to my favorite thing, I find it incredibly frustrating that Killua is incapable of letting any vulnerability leak out in front of Gon!!!! Killua has a lot going on internally & goes through a couple breakdowns followed by moments of self-realization, but always away from Gon's perception. He doesn't even tell Gon he tore his brother's nen needle out of his forehead iirc 😭. Part of it, I think, is that he doesn't want Gon to treat him any differently, he just wants to pretend he's a normal kid with no trauma to weigh him down & have fun freely. Which is completely understandable. And he's also just a kid, who doesn't fully understand or know how to express emotions. But it is very painful to watch him go through so much internal turmoil while holding onto the image of Gon as his guiding light; while Gon has no idea anything is happening in his friend's mind at all. 😭😭😭 (There is a very good post here about their miscommunication.)

favorite line: "Yep... I'm so humble :3", when he's demonstrating the difference in power between Hisoka, Gon, and himself. Adorable moment!

brOTP: Killua & Leorio get along just like squabbling siblings lmao, but you can tell they have a fondness for eachother. I feel like Leorio is the older brother Killua should have had 🥺🥺🥺

OTP: Killugon is so dear & sweet! I feel like their friendship is built up so masterfully; where two people who it feels like shouldn't get along, fit together perfectly. And then they seem to keep on going perfectly, until all of a sudden the cracks come out, and they don't anymore, and they both have to grow up a little to fix it.

nOTP: Killupika. I don't hate it, but I can't really see it either. From my two watchthroughs, Killua & Kurapika's interactions didn't seem to leave much of an impression on me because I cannot remember them 😅

random headcanon: I enjoy the fic trope that the reason Killua is the Zoldyck heir because of his white hair. Usually I've seen it in conjuction with white hair being symbolic of containing stronger power, but I like it best when that's not the case & it is solely tradition for the white-haired child to be the heir. I find it very amusing and canon-type silly lol.

unpopular opinion: I have only seen the anime so perhaps it is different in the manga. But I remember thinking on my second watchthrough that while Gon said some very harsh things during the palace invasion, Killua's insecurities during this arc started before then when Gon simply said "let's go," and Killua didn't know if he meant it as a friend or teammate. Tbh I think that insecurity is something Killua needs to work on on his own for a while, & that the temporary break might be good for them. They are both two very traumatized kids who have problems with boundaries & communication. I feel like they need a little time to figure out their own needs & wants & identities, without imposing or being imposed upon by each other.

song i associate with them: Again I'm not very good with songs for characters, but maybe White Foxes by Suzanne Sundfor, as a visceral song about wanting to leave your constrictive gilded cage and embrace a more organic, freeing existence.

what fandoms do you write for?

I've got a couple dozen that I've written for at least once, but the main fandoms I've written for are Critical Role, One Piece, and SPN back in the day. Critical Role is by far the fandom I've written most for (35 fics).

do you respond to comments? why or why not?

Absolutely! I do my very best to respond to every single comment, though occasionally things fall by the wayside. Having interesting conversations with interesting people in the comments is one of the best parts of publishing fic!

what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

This is a deep pull, but probably Land Mines, which is a Steins;Gate fic I wrote a long time ago. The entire story is about the long term effects of depression and PTSD, and the ending doesn't exactly offer a lot of hope for Okabe's future.

what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Honestly, I'm a sucker for a bittersweet ending-even my happy endings tend to have a touch of pain that hasn't healed perfectly. But I think your dust from mine has the most uncompromisingly happy ending - fitting, since it's a fairytale!

do you get hate on fics?

I've gotten a few hate comments over the years, but thankfully nothing recently!

do you write smut?

I've written smut in the past! Though none of it's still up on my Ao3.

do you write crossovers?

I haven't, but I used to love reading them!

God, way wayyyyy back in the days of Glee fandom, I think I cowrote a fic or two that were probably published on Livejournal. Besides that, no - I'm definitely better as a solo writer.

It's always gotta be Garak/Bashir from Star Trek: DS9, the original OTP.

what's the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

There was one Critical Role fic I had a big outline and a first chapter for that I never finished but I really wanted to - I loved the concept, but I just didn't have the time. It was going to be a high-concept timeloop/dating sim au (what a wild combination of words) loosely inspired by Dramatical Murder, featuring Jester Lavorre and her four different love interests (Fjord, Beau, Caleb, Yasha) in a techonopunk version of Zadash trying to survive a single apocalyptic night.

what are your writing strengths?

I'd say anything that's about the nitty-gritty of character analysis - I think I'm decent at succinctly hitting on what makes a character tick and finding situations to put them in that force those layers to peel apart.

what are your writing weaknesses?

Dialogue 😭 I love writing description, introspection, hell, even exposition, but it takes me 20 mins to write a single line of dialogue. Something I'm still working on!

thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Hmm, it depends. If it's appropriate and purposeful, sure - by that I mean, if it's motivated by canon and if it's there for a reason. For example, it's a common OP fanon convention to have Sanji speaking French in fic, but I've rarely enjoyed the execution. Oda saying Sanji's real life equivalent nationality is French doesn't mean it isn't distracting when a character who canonically only seems to know French cooking terms is suddenly multilingual with no other explanation. But if a character does canonically speak another language, or the fic justifies why they do in this context, then by all means!

Yu-gi-oh!

favourite fic you've ever written?

Easy answer: Only the Nightingale Sings. My longest, my proudest, my most complex story. I put a year of my life and my heart and soul into that fic and it was worth every minute of effort.

w/ Alfred: I am unexpectedly a monoshipper towards Arthur & Alfred www just love the complicated history they have, not in the sense of the history of them as countries but more of as personifications. Arthur tried to raise Alfred as his own friend/brother and Alfred wants to be something more, but there's no denying there that Alfred admires Arthur. Then from the angst they are the perfect old married couple, and also there's something poetic about them technically being world superpowers. Sweet gay disasters.

LOVE

w/ Alistair: Altho my interpretations of Alistair's and Arthur's relationship is rooted on fanon interpretations than canon, because I was used too for a long time on Alistair fanon design than canon (yes, I was active in pre-canon Alistair release), I like the angst that comes from the struggle in their relationship. They care about each other, as brothers or something more, but they're both stubborn and hotheaded and hold onto the past for too much that they end up hurting each other. The best to love each other is from the distance. But can they stay away from each other for that long?

w/ Port: They literally have the vibe of childhood friends turned sweethearts. Port tempers the raging wildfire in Arthur and Arthur brings out the hidden passion in Port. I see this relationship being the sweetest and softest for Arthur, and they've been through a lot together history-wise.

w/ Howard: I like human x nation couples XD I like the idea of sweet, simple Howard meeting the big, powerful Arthur, and they just get along. Work buddies that turned to something more, but can't pursue, because their futures are headed to different directions. I like the hc that Arthur keeps up with Howard's family and descendants.

w/ Matthew: someone said that Matthew was the husband who stepped up and I'm laughing lmao. Matthew and Arthur's relationship is tied a lot with Alfred but I like to think that Matthew and Arthur would have the sweetest courtship. Matthew would have his insecurities and Arthur would take the longest time to reciprocate Matthew's feelings at a romantic level, but I like it. Also it helps that this would f up Alfred lmao.

w/ Gilbert: brother-mothers I like the idea of them in a relationship because, if set in history, they're both formidable and ambitious empires, and in modern times, drinking buddies that like getting sloshed with each other. Also like the idea of them bonding over raising their 'little brothers' (Alfred and Ludwig)

LIKE

w/ Antonio: Antagonistic rivalry, what can I say? I like the idea that they get along in modern times but Antonio wants to get back to Arthur for defeating him and his armada, and Arthur has this side to him just wants to get back to the seas and just do what he wants lol. They have tensions.

w/ Francis: I like portraying more as bittersweet childhood friends and at the same 'the one who got away.' They care about each other, and at one point I think they did love each other, but that was the past, they don't feel strongly about each other. But they feel the longing from memory.

w/ Yao: I like the portrayals where Yao and Arthur bicker a lot, especially when HK gets involved. Old married couple with a complicated past. I like them more as cunning allies who would stab each other in the back if it comes to it, because that's just how power struggles work. I think Yao and Arthur, knowing their histories, are familiar with how the power struggles happen at royal courts.

w/ Kiku: Their portrayals have been really cute. I like them platonic as well as romantic. But don't have strong feelings for them.

w/ Ludwig: I like the idea of them being the most serious couple ever.

w/ |ndia: I like the portrayal of their relationship (not really romantic, but more of a power struggle kind of way) in historical hetalia, particularly in Maaf. There's also a comic that was posted here on Tumblr about them, with |ndia describing Arthur as "golden choker." I think that kind of sums up how |ndia feels about Arthur and I think it's just so interesting to explore.

ohh boy here we go, talking about danganronpa feels like opening up an old drawer I haven't opened in years fdsafsa (I know I participate in dr zines but I rarely talk about the show itself haha)

Favorite character: kyoko, licorne/rei mikagami (from the danganronpa kirigiri spin off novel, yea I was that deep into that franchise), sayaka and makoto!

Least Favorite character: tbh I don't really like a lot of the characters, if I had to choose some I think it would be teruteru (he makes me uncomfy as an ace) or kazuichi (he annoyed me)

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): naegiri, kirizono, saimatsu (used to be a huge oumasai girly though), fuyupeko and naegami

Character I find most attractive: okay this is going to sound really basic I know but celestia, kyoko, byakuya, shuichi and sayaka. They're so pretty okayyy

Character I would marry: I'll be honest, makoto because he's such a green flag in every way. Least toxic character. Yes he is boring but come on he is a sweetheart

Character I would be best friends with: tbh I struggle to make friends so possibly none of them. Maybe tsumugi though since I could talk about my fav shows with her

A random thought: read the danganronpa kirigiri novels, I love them with all my heart. She has such an insane backstory

An unpopular opinion: trigger happy havoc is better than the other games. It feels much more tense since we have no idea what's really going on plus the characters are much more forced into an enclosed space than in the other games. Like in v3 or sdr2 they can go outside, hell the second game has like 5 islands. Meanwhile in the first one they are in one single building, it's honestly a surprise that they didn't end up with more victims. Additionally we have no idea what the school was about which made the final trial more interesting imo

My canon OTP: naegiri fdsafdsa I'm happy that they're actually canon

Non-canon OTP: kirizono, I love girl kissers

Most badass character: tbh they are all badass in their own way considering they are ultimates and the situation they're in. However the most badass of them all is sakura, rest in peace queen. Also kyoko (you can see I have a bias) cause not only can she solve cases really quickly but she also knows martial arts, can shoot with a gun from 200m away, knows german, is rich and a straight A student? Go off queen

Pairing I am not a fan of: tbh komahina which is surprising considering I usually like the toxic ships because of the angst they bring. But in their case it's the fandom that ruined it for me though. Also hinanami is kinda boring

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): tbh a lot of them. However I think the character that was done dirty the most is hifumi cause after being forced to read through his fte for a fanfic, I learned that he's actually surprisingly relatable. It's just the main plot and focus on his weirdness that make him icky (doesn't mean I like him btw, I still don't like him). Also I think tenko and I say that as someone who didn't like her in my playthrough either. Ohh and I'm legally forced to say mukuro (for obvious reasons)

Favourite friendship: kyoko and yui samidare oh my god they are so bittersweet aaaaaaaaa I love their development throughout the novels so much which makes the ending so much harder. I promise you the novels are good

Diplomatic Indulgence (Kylux, E, 13k) The progenitor of the "weird space fruit as lube" tag. Smutty political intrigue, slave outfit Hux, Supreme Leader Kylo as both psychic and oblivious, etc.

Into Retrograde (Kylux, E, 27k) My 2022 Kylux big bang project with @annihilatings, a fun pre-canon adventure with Kylo and Hux on the run in the New Republic after Kylo's mission goes wrong. Yes, this is the one with the zero-g smut.

Star Wars sequels (Kylux, Hardinal, Hitaka). I'm currently working on an Arcane WIP (Jayvik) along with a few Star Wars WIPs.

I love responding to comments! It really makes my day to receive a nice comment, and I really enjoy chatting with people about fandom and sharing behind the scenes info about my writing.

6. Angstiest Ending?

A Traveller From an Antique Land, one of my pieces from @kyluxshortshorts last year. I haven't done many angsty endings, though I like a bit of angst along the way.

7. Fic with the Happiest Ending?

Probably The Art of Delegation. Hitaka lends itself more easily to fluff than Kylux and Hardinal, IMO. But most of my fics have hopeful or bittersweet resolutions... for the POV characters, at least. "Happy" for Kylux usually means "unhappy" for the rest of the galaxy!

8. Do you get hate?

Not yet. I hope it stays that way.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. 42% of Friday fics come with free smut!

10. Do you write crossovers?

Not presently. I'm not opposed to it for the right idea.

11. Ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge. (Other than the AI scraping that stole all of our AO3 fics.)

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! My first Kylux fic, A Concession Bound in Salt, is available in Russian here. Break the Lock if It Don't Fit is also available in Russian. Both translated by Our_Own_Star_Wars/Lenuchka on AO3!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

As the delightful and talented Jayne mentioned in her answers, yes, we are working on a large Kylux project together! I've been having a ball with it. Literally, in one particular chapter... 😉

14. All time favourite ship?

My "all time" favorite today isn't the same as my "all time" favorite 10 years ago and likely won't be 10 years from now. But I will say that Doctor/Master will always have a special place in my heart for being the first OTP I was really bonkers about way back in Ten's era. So will Kylux for being the first ship I shared fic about. Most recently, Jayvik has crawled inside my brain and seized control like a Yeerk.

15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

For various reasons I'm unlikely to finish Strange Orbits, the first Kylux longfic I started posting on AO3, but never say never. These days I generally don't start posting longfic until at least a draft is done so I don't leave people hanging.

16. Writing Strengths?

I've received some very kind comments about characterization and dialogue. I like to think I'm funny when the situation calls for it, lol.

17. Writing Weaknesses?

Setting descriptions and brevity. Overthinking prose and plot also tends to slow me down during the writing process.

18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?

Tricky to pull off. If it makes sense for your writing, the characters, and the audience (or you're okay with some of the audience not getting it, or you have footnotes) then it can be cool.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

The first fandom I wrote anything "serious" for would be Mass Effect.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Of the fics I've finished, I think By Any Other Name may be my best. Writing from Cardinal's POV is a fun challenge. I am quite excited about a couple of my current WIPs, so stay tuned... eventually. No promises on timelines with all of the (gestures at everything), lol.

I am not even kidding when I say I got a little misty eyed when I read this 🥹 This means so much to me, you have no idea.

Our Forever is my most favorite thing that I have ever written. And hardly anyone has read it, which always makes me a little bummed because I think it's the best one in the series. But I get it, it's kind of a downer and it's a little out there, so I don't blame anyone for not being interested. I really loved getting into his psyche a little more and how he would deal with immense grief (spoiler: Not Well! 😂). He has always been such a strong character, so to write him breaking down and crumbling from the inside from losing who was basically his soul mate...It's such a heartbreaking image to me. But I was pretty happy with the way it came out. A bittersweet but happy ending all in one.

Five and Vivian are my OTP and I had to find a way to make their love story live on, which is why I have roughly 8 billion one-shots of the two of them. I have a problem, I admit. 🙄 So, if you're still hungry for more of those two horny lovebirds, there's plenty more to read here if you haven't already. Although you said you read all my work, so if that's the case...holy crap, you're amazing!!

I'm probably coming on WAY too strong here, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. You have made my day and probably my week. I often get very down about having writer's block, or thinking that I've already written so much Five fanfic that no one cares anymore. But this was such a lovely inspiration.

Warnings -> Angst, Major Character Death

Authors Note -> BokuAka is my OTP, no one can top them. They are so adorable and I love them. They are also SOOO perfect for angst, I don't know why.

I looked around the table in the back corner of my hometown bar. Friends and family gathered around me in a bittersweet joy. A going-away party. A party that's supposed to be fun, but turns out depressing and miserable. But with my friends, nothing can ever be boring.

Insisting we have it at our bar, Kuroo gathered all of our high school friends, all of my coworkers, and all of my family, into one tiny section. Cheers and beers went round and round the small rectangular table, as well as through the bar, from strangers who over heard.

After about two hours, I left. Calling an Uber, with no destination in mind, I thought about all the times Kuroo and I walked out of this bar, absolutely wasted, trying to find our ways back home. I sometimes wish I could go back, but what would change? I'd still be where I am now.

The notification popped up on my phone, signaling that I had another customer. At the bar, my back seat door opened and a man sat down. His cheeks were a rosy red, his golden eyes were teary, and his hair was two-toned and messy. Despite all of that, he was one of the most handsome men I've seen in this tiny town.

"Where are you going sir?"

"Would it be okay if we just drove around? With the windows down? It's a nice night and I'm not ready to be alone just yet."

"That's fine with me."

Akaashi started pulling away and Bokuto rolled the windows down, eager to breathe in the night and forget his destiny.  Arms were seen outside the window as Bokuto became an airplane, flying on the adrenaline and sorrow.  To passerby's Bokuto was drunk and having fun, but Akaashi could see.  He saw the way his body tensed up ever so slightly every time they hit a bump, or the way his eyes always had a tear or two threatening to fall.

"Hey man, I know we don't know each other but, is there anything you want to say?"

Bokuto brought his arms back in and slowly smiled.  It wasn't a smile of joy, but a smile of pain.  The kind of smile one gives when they're trying to convince themselves they'll be okay.

"Have you ever thought about dying?  Or what life is like after you die? Cause I know I do.

"Unfortunately I can say that I have.  Why do you ask?  What's going on?  What's Up?"

"I was diagnosed with brain cancer last week.  They said it's too late to have chemo or even get it treated.  I'm-  Im dying and I'm okay with that."

Akaashi's eyes filled with tears.  His vision became blurry and it got to the point of him having to pull over.

"I was at a going away party with my friends at the bar.  I told them I'm moving away for a job opportunity.  I didn't have the courage to tell them the place was Heaven.

Truth is, I'm a little scared.  Not for myself, but for them.  I wasn't drinking, and I know they sensed something was wrong, but I hope they just thought I was sad about leaving.

That's why I asked you to drive around.  I'm better around people, even if they're strangers.  When I'm by myself I feel lonely and sad.  I don't like feeling like that."

Akaashi was stunned.  At the end of each ride, he asked people if there was something they needed to get off their chest, and he's heard some things.  But nothing- nothing compared to this.

"I'm sorry man.  I didn't mean to go so into detail, but I think this is the happiest I've been since my diagnosis.  The way the night feels on my lungs and skin is breathtaking and the town tonight has such a heavenly glow."

"I agree.  Although it's small, this town really does affect you in the most beautiful ways."

"I know we won't ever see each other after this. but thank you.  Thank you for listening and indulging with me.  It means a lot coming from a stranger, and I really hope it doesn't have to do with the fact that I have cancer.  Even though I'm dying, I'd much rather people be blunt with me, and not beat around the bush."

"You're welcome.  I will let you know, it's not the cancer.  You are a very likable person, and I'll tell you, that you are a very pretty crier.  Your eyes shine like diamonds when you cry, and I find it mesmerizing."

"'Thank you- "

"Keiji.  Akaashi Keiji."

"Kotarou.  Bokuto Kotarou.  Thank you Keiji."

"You're welcome Kotarou.  I'll take you home now.  Just know your not alone.  Not ever."

Keiji sat, dressed in all black, underneath an umbrella, and cried.  He hasn't known Kotarou at all, but that one might in his car, left such an impact, and Keiji couldn't believe a man like him was gone.  Not two months after they're fateful encounter, Keiji read on the paper that the beloved volleyball player passed away.  They never stated the reason, probably to protect the public from such a sorrowful thing, but Keiji knew.  Keiji remembered how miserable Kotarou felt in his back seat.  He remembered how much it hurt to hear Kotarou's voice crack and see his body tense.  He remembered, despite his horrible odds, how Kotarou looked genuinely happy with his arms out the winter smelling the city. 

It was a cruel fate.  A horrible way to go, and with the way it hurt him, he can't imagine how the family felt. 

"I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss.  I hadn't known Bokuto at all, but I was his Uber driver the night of his "going-away party.  I wanted you guys to know, that he was okay with dying.  He said it himself.  and I want you guys to know, he enjoyed himself that night.  And I want you guys to remember that.  Please, for him."

i've been waxing poetic about it on and off on bluesky for a few months now but i really really really dig their thematic parallels and contrasts as the main protagonist/antagonist of the series... i think that makes their dynamic even more romantic in a sense...!?

it's really hard to put into words but one of my otp fics from a fandom long past was centered around the idea of "aienkien" and it's like a bittersweet-ness? the couple is united around unpredictable circumstances but it's also like a feeling of "we weren't probably destined to be together , but here we are anyway"

  Coda to "Soft Touch" by @perverse-idyll

He'd thrown the bait. Would Snape catch it? Yes, he would, and throw it back.

Soft Touch is the Most ethical Massage Therapy fic ever :D Dirty, bad, hot, wrong. So it's incredible to get this really sweet and wholesome coda. You can see the undercurrents of the more complicated themes but also really sweet. 3300 words. Rated T. This is as fluffy as PI Snarry gets :D :D

Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank/Minerva McGonagall. 13600 words. Rated G. My favorite fic of 2023. From Snapecase 2023 fest collection. Beautiful, beautiful fic which is kind of my personal epilogue for the books at this point. Lost count of rereads. It's packed with beautiful friendships, people focusing on the sweet instead of the bitter, people moving on together, people forgiving each other. It's an incredible fic with perfect execution on some classic tropes like matchmaking and friends who are going to help you whether or not you asked for it. Also some not so classic tropes like celebrating a female character's life/happiness/love being the center of a rich fic. Ultimately this is Minerva McGonagall's fic and I am so here for it.

  Once of Eden by eldritcher.

Lily/Eileen. 2000 words. Rated M. Poignant and super sharp character study of Lily. Lots of storms inside her head about her family/war/Petunia/Snape. This is right before her marriage but she has this feeling she doesn't fit into that life and she doesn't want to let go of her past. Like a lot of us, she's also seeing her past/childhood through these nostalgic glasses but at the same time she's also noticing adults in her life and has this bittersweet feeling that she's an adult now/making adult choices now. Serious Catcher in the Rye vibes. This fic has the Lily for me. Really like Harry, really Gryffindor. It's a really beautiful, sensitive, unique, powerfully human fic.

Tonks/Fleur, Tonks/Charlie, Tonks/Remus, Tonks/OFC. 2900 words. Legit character studies of bi characters are super rare in our fandom. I don't really go for self-discovery type fics but this one is whoa! Love, love, love and highly recommend this one. It's out and proud and amazing. <3 From Ladies of HP Fest Collection.

Florean Fortescue/Snape. 9000 words. Rated G. From Hoggywartyxmas 2022 fest collection. This is definitely my fav slash fic of the year <3 I feel like a lot of times especially with OTPs the preslash part is kind of assumed to happen in the background. This fic does an incredibly amazing job of setting up the preslash and it's just ultra convincing. New Snape ship dropped <3

  Birds of Paradise by eldritcher

2700 words. Rated G. Fawkes character study with a beautiful friendship with Albus Dumbledore. Really beautiful, ethereal fic. eldritcher can write non-human characters with their own "type" of emotional connect. Normally they use this superpower for writing interspecies :D But this is a beautiful gen fic. From Pandemic, my most beloved. Obviously each and every eldritcher fic has a really special place in my heart but Pandemic is just insanely generous giving something special at the right time when it was needed and it made a huge difference for me personally. Love and anarchy, always!

  The Octaves and the Circumsion of Our Lord by eldritcher

The Dark Lord is circumcised. Nobody knows how everybody knows, but everybody knows.

2300 words. Rated M. Regulus Black character study with a beautiful friendship with Kreacher. Dark and intense fic about Regulus getting radicalized but also showing how he actually buys into those beliefs. Normally I avoid Regulus fics because the characterizations just don't work for me. This is exactly how I imagine Canon Regulus.

The BEST Aberforth Dumbledore Snarkiest!!!! <3 I am a big fan of how this author writes The Abe D! Actually I am a big fan of this author. FAVE! <3 A lot of times rarepairs can feel kind of hard to believe because the characters don't have canon time together. You are totally going to be convinced. ALSO BANTER. I love relationship progression with banter. Things get bittersweet because of the war but it's got a really beautiful earned happy ending <3 My fav het fic of the year. Best fic to end this list :D

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go

There's a lot of tropes that are very fandom-y that vary in popularity from fandom to fandom, or ship to ship, or niche to niche. Silly premises and whatnot. It's REALLY interesting to see where the appeal is stronger or less from fandom to fandom and in different eras.

Like, for example, while I've seen a decent bit of civilian AUs in batfandom, not many of them fit the formatting of, say "coffeeshop AU" or "flowershop AU" or those similar job-specific AUs, which are often seen as such a staple of fandom that they're the prototypical example that someone might use as an example when explaining fandom tropes. I think... College AUs might be the most common? and even then they're not college-centric in the same way that I'd expect.

Otherwise, De-aging, Time travel, and omegaverse (especially the last one) seem to be the more common "general tropes," while most of the time it's a lot of fandom-specific tropes that tend to cover the majority of works. I have no hard data on this I haven't exactly been counting and someone out there probably could and might prove me wrong, but it's just kind of fun to observe.

Of course, in the name of diversifying fandom, I feel it's my duty to attempt to drag at least some of these "general" tropes into this fandom, assuming I can ever actually finish the works with them.

... I am absolutely atrocious at replying on AO3, while on tumblr I have been slightly better at keeping up with feedback. I greatly appreciate every comment however.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

It has to be "Didyme's Demise". The short story details how she has faith in her dear brother, and does not even see her murder come.

... I do not understand this concept. Though I guess "I Gave You My Heart" has a bittersweet ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I do not believe I have received direct hatred towards anything I have ever posted or written.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes, though I have crossed more into the... emotional/romantic sphere than the hardcore smut genre.

10. Craziest crossover?

... No crossovers so far.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I have experienced people pilfering my edits and graphics, but never any of my written work. That is something I am thankful for.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I am not against the practice as long as credit is given.

13. Have you co-written a fic before?

Never! Though I really wish to do a collaboration at some point. Though, a little thing I am finishing up has a lot of influence from a dear friend; with one of their own OC's making an appearance. A blending of verses if you may.

14. All time favorite ship?

I have never been a huge shipper within fandom spaces, nor do I have a one true pairing (do we still use OTP?) I will throw down over. Most of the time I find myself shipping characters with comfort, happiness and mental stability these days. Instead of one ship I will give a little list of ships I have read about the last decade and a half, exposing some of my previous and current fandoms...

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will

There is a work hidden in my vault that was begun while I was friends with someone. Now, this friendship has since turned sour, and because of that I do not know if it will see the light of day. It is Twilight related but it is centred around The Romanians.

16. What are your writing strengths?

The most common compliment I receive is "Beautiful", and seeing as though beauty is in the eye of the beholder I am inclined to say my strength is different for different people.

Personally I believe I have quite a good vocabulary, as well as being good with my metaphors.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Fast paced action rarely works well with my borderline purple prose, which is why some of my works sometimes feel very different in my opinion. The New Moon rewrite has a lot more action instead of introspection and feelings, that is a challenge for me.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language

If you do decide to add dialogue in another language; confer with someone who speaks said language if you are able to. Or, at the very least, do a lot of research so it does not sound off or out of character. The few times I have used Greek I have asked people who are native speakers for help!

Personally I think it can add a nice touch as long as it is not overdone.

19. First fandom you wrote for

Twilight! While I have been a part of fandom spaces ever since I was 12/13 this is the first time I created any sort of content for others to enjoy.

20. Favorite fic you've written

Of the ones that have been finished and published it has to be "He Loves Power, A Terrible Love". That piece will forever have my heart, and whenever i feel discouraged about my writing I return to it. It reminds me that my writing is in fact not half bad. Though I do believe a fanfic in the works called "As Above, So Below" will knock it down from its throne.

That one will have people showing up outside my house with pitchforks.

Anon, this comment made me GIGGLE like an idiot, huge grin on my face - thank you thank you thank you so much. This is the best compliment I’ve ever gotten! It literally means the world.

With that being said - and this goes for the other people in my inbox asking for recs - I’m not the best person to ask. Firstly, I don’t read that much fanfic (hi, med student running on virtually no sleep here) and I’m always behind on reviews (fanfiction is meant to be enjoyed from my laptop with a cup of tea and no one in the house so i can weep/shriek/pace etc). Secondly, I suck at keeping track of what I read.

Thirdly, your ask in particular is virtually impossible because I live for the grief. I lap up angst like a kitten does milk.

Sweetness… meh. (Except of course when I cry and moan about the fact that I need to stop reading for the day because a fanfic literally made my heart ache. I'm telling you, I suffer more for these two than I do my irl friends and that says something about me.)

Anyway, this is what I’ll do. I’ll link some of my favourite authors (in English, if you want Italian recs just ask and I will deliver) and I’ll leave you to browse their pages and see what speaks to you. Screaming, crying, hollering, etc etc etc. (There's also this masterpiece by the same author but even looking it up to link it made me shake and I won't speak of it until I have processed my grief because I have people to see later in the day and I cannot be dazed or aching or in tears or shellshocked by the rawness of the writing etc etc etc)

And finally, the most recommended (and popular, I think) Bellamort fanfiction ever, which I admit I've never read in full (I know, I know, believe me when I say I have no time/mental fortitude) which is of course Surrogate.

They are all absolutely brilliant for reasons I wish I could get into right now (they deserve proper recs, this hasty reply does not do them justice). They all present different but equally fascinating versions of my characters.

Unfortunately, none of them are really saccharine/fluffy. There is softness but it's always bittersweet in most of them. WHICH IS HOW I LIKE IT MUAHAHHAA- coff coff.
