Can you talk about your thoughts on hinny? I have no problem with people shipping it but to me personally it just doesn't work. It feels like Rowling tried too hard or maybe just wasn't good at writing romance and messed it up. Maybe it was too rushed? The ship doesn't work for me but I'd love to hear your views.

Okay, sorry it took a while to answer this, I actually have a lot of thoughts and I have posts on some of them that I hope to get out soon-ish. I also wanted to go back to the books to make sure I'm not talking out of my ass. But I don't like Hinny, never did. And my reasons are kinda divided into three categories.

Disclaimer: I don't have anything against anyone who ships hinny, it's just really not my thing and I don't see it working with the way I see their characters.

And that's like the core of it. I just don't see Harry and Ginny as compatible on a character level. That and their relationship never really read as believable to me in the books.

The 3 categories I mentioned are:

Harry's character

Firstly, I think Harry is gay. Not bi, but gay. I think he was never actually attracted to a woman and I have a whole post to prove it. So, because that's how I read his character, I just can't really see him with any girl.

(Now, I don't think JKR intended for Harry to come off as gay, but he did)

Secondly, he never thought about Ginny, like, up until book 6, and even during large portions of book 6, he just isn't thinking about Ginny as a potential romantic interest. And when he does think about Ginny in the final two books it never reads like he really likes her. It reads like they decided they are dating, but I don't think Harry knows why he supposedly likes her. He just decided he does, but doesn't know why. It was kind of the same with Cho, where he said he had a crush on her and was nervous around her, but if you asked Harry what he likes about her, his answer would be: "Ehh...."

Like, Harry doesn't really seem to know why he's dating Ginny, and neither do I. It's just how it's written.

2. Ginny's character

So, this is again my opinion, but I don't like Ginny. I just don't like her character. I wish her off the page whenever she talks.

And, when it comes to shipping, for me, I need to find both the characters involved interesting and fun for me to explore to ship them together and care about the pairing. As I don't like Ginny and don't really care for her, I can't really ship her with anyone, not really. It's not even like I hate her (not the way I hate Dumbledore), I just find a lot of her actions and behavior iffy and she annoys me more often than not.

I'm not going to list everything I don't like about Ginny (some of it appears in the rest of this post). But her treatment of Fluer, for example, really soured her character to me. Like, sure, Ginny's young, but, she's 15, and by that point, I think she should take responsibility for being awful to Fluer who was nothing but nice to all of them. Envy is not a good look for Ginny.

3. How they are portrayed together

Like I mentioned in the Harry section, their romance just never really felt there to me. The descriptions were off and left me feeling annoyed at their scenes together more than anything else.

Again, I'm writing a more comprehensive post about it, but the gist of it is that Harry's thoughts about Ginny in books 6 and 7 are weirdly detached for a supposed crush at best or outright uncomfortable for me to read at worst.

Now, we know Harry can describe characters he finds attractive in greater detail. There is none of that detail with Ginny. He only mentioned her hair color and that her hair is long and smells nice. Like, he doesn't talk about her eye color, her facial structure, eye shape (like he does sometimes with characters he does find attractive) — nothing. He doesn't even call her pretty once! At least he referred to Cho Chang as pretty twice in the series.

In the books there is never a scene (not even one) that convinces me they should be together. Like, they have no chemistry. They kinda remind me of Ron and Lavender tbh. They make out and are present in the same space often, but they never talk. Not really. I don't think Ginny actually knows Harry all that well because he never honestly talks to her about anything real. They don't really have chemistry or a relationship, they're just together. At least, that's how I always saw them.

And yes, Harry has his jealousy moments (that are portrayed so weirdly I always narrow my eyes at them to make sure they were actually there, but that's a whole other post about Harry's chest monster of jealousy), but he still doesn't really explain what he finds in Ginny. He doesn't mention she's attractive or pretty at any point, nor does he mention anything he particularly likes about her personality (except that she doesn't weep like Cho and is good at Quidditch. Neither of which are particularly good basis for a relationship).

Like, Ginny mentions why she likes Harry and that she does multiple times. Harry by contrast, just feels so incredibly uninvolved in his own relationship, to me.

Also, personally, I just find the setup of their relationship iffy. Like Ginny outright says she never gave up on Hary and always knew they'd end up together. It means, that since she was 11 (or earlier), she was crushing on Harry, never gave up on her crush, and considered them ending up together fate. She dated other guys to make Harry jealous and pay attention to her, and that's just really gross. I don't like her long obsessive crush on Harry or her treatment of the other guys she dated on her way to get Harry.

Proof of that, for those wondering:

“I never really gave up on you,” she [Ginny] said. “Not really. I always hoped. . . . Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more — myself.”

She literally said she dated other guys so Harry would take notice of her. That just grosses me out.

So, no, I don't like Hinny (or Ginny).

Why do you think the tides have slightly turned from "Elia deserves better than Rhaegar" to shipping her and Rhaegar together? Like what is the psychology behind these people because I've seen some of them like/reblog anti Rhaegar posts while also shipping Rhaegar x Elia at the same time.

hey anon! my thoughts are a bit messy, but i’ve done my best to explain them coherently :)

so, rhaegar was the best man anyone could have when elia was alive, and most people want the best for their favs. he was considered the most handsome, didn’t have a bad personality, and he was crown prince—meaning elia was almost queen, which is often seen as the greatest role a woman can have. the narrative also treats rhaegar as a beautiful, tragic, haunting figure, and elia actually had this very aesthetically pleasing man all to herself at one point! she was married to him, had children with him, and her life was so close to perfect! but rhaegar just had to go and ruin it. 😠

for many elia stans, if rhaegar hadn’t fallen in love with another woman (they want him to have been a completely different character), then everything would’ve been perfect, and elia would’ve had the best, most desirable life. however, that’s not what happened—elia met a very tragic end, and as a result, these stans feel double the bitterness. because of this bitterness, they blame rhaegar for everything (even though it’s not logical to do so), but he’s just too ‘perfect’ to let go of. so, for years these stans have made rhaegar revolve around elia, filling his tag with posts about her out of bitterness. so, i do believe that this obsession with rhaegar x elia has always been there, but i think it’s become a more favorable stance on the elia stan side of the fandom because of a mix of reasons.

plus, rhaegar is one of the few canon relationships we know elia had, since she’s not much of a character. because of this, and the fact that most people don’t like to stray too far from canon, most elia stans are forced to focus on rhaegar, which has created an echo chamber. basically, if a sentiment about elia and rhaegar’s relationship becomes popular, then the whole elia stan side of the fandom will likely regurgitate the sentiment. (also, this desire to stick close to canon is likely why the elia x arthur ship was so popular. while it’s a total crack ship, it had good aesthetics, and since elia and arthur at least knew each other, it allowed the stans to create their perfect fanfiction whilst sticking it to rhaegar. but remember, elia was actually married to rhaegar and had children with him, so while arthur is cool, rhaegar was always ‘top dog,’ meaning arthur would never be able to match up to rhaegar to most elia stans. also, the arthur x elia crack ship is likely her second most popular ship, which just shows how little elia stans have to work with, so they’re always forced to eventually return back to rhaegar for a lot of things.)

however, even if the elia x rhaegar ship gains more popularity, these stans will never stop hating rhaegar because he wasn’t ‘perfect’—and he wasn’t perfect because he didn’t love elia. plus, rhaegar loving another woman and supposedly kidnapping her is what began the war that led to elia’s tragic death. that’s bitterness times 1000. and while i don’t actually blame rhaegar for the war, i do think that this is how an elia stan sees it. i also don’t view rhaegar’s complex relationship with elia as a bad thing—it’s actually a very realistic take on an arranged marriage between two decent people. but most elia stans will never be able to get over the fact that they almost had everything, which is why many have it out for lyanna, as they consider her a thief who ruined their ‘perfection.’

tbh, that might be why so many elia stans are so obsessed with the idea that rhaegar only got with lyanna because of the prophecy—they don’t want to believe that rhaegar actually loved a different woman and not their perfect self insert elia. that’s a bit mean of me… but i don’t know what else one would call the ‘elia’ elia stans have created.

now that i’ve laid all those thoughts out, i’ll try to explain why the tides seem to be turning… i think it may have something to do with the ‘targaryens are all evil and bad’ sentiment losing popularity. i think this shift has occurred due to a mix of factors, such as years of fandom fights and fandom cycles leading to the targs being more liked now than before. it helps that canon doesn’t actually condemn the targs/favors them quite a bit, and the influx of new targ fans from HOTD has also contributed. this combination of reasons seems to have shifted the way the mainstream fandom discusses all the targaryen characters, including rhaegar. so, with this shift, it’s only natural that some elia stans/elia x rhaegar shippers—who’ve always been there—are using this opportunity to push their agenda. while these stans still hate rhaegar and see him as the bad guy, they just can’t let go of him. and as the mainstream fandom moves away from the anti targaryen sentiment, these smaller corners of the fandom, which tend to be echo chambers, are also affected, which has therefore led to a rise in rhaegar x elia shippers and the ‘shifting tide’ that you’ve also noticed.

The asoiaf fandom is WILD! Why am I seeing so many posts absolutely condemning Rhaegar and asserting that "JON IS NOTHING LIKE HIM!!!" and that Jon inherited no qualities from his bio father and that he'd just hate and deny all his Targ connections?

This in itself is wild enough, but the truly crazy part is how many comparisons and parallels there are drawn between Jon and CATELYN instead! Posts about Jon being a 'hater' like Catelyn and having her traits and sharing parallels with her and wanting her love and validation?? Posts about him recreating a NedCat romance with an certain character?? CATELYN? The lady who emotionally abused him his whole live?? Who told him that he should have been crippled?? Who made him feel that she begrudged his every bite, that he wasn't allowed to outperform Robb, that his very existence was unwanted?? Who did her best to send a fucking 14yr Jon away for life to the point Ned Stark called her "damnably cruel"?? Who took away any chance he had at having a home??? That woman????

Pls keep your grubby hands away from Jon. He will learn about his parents, Rhaegar and Lyanna. He will get in touch with his Targ side through Dany and Bloodraven. He will learn about Lyanna from Howland. And he will eventually understand his true identity, that he's a Targ and a Stark. And what's more, he is the blue rose who shares traits with Rhaegar (able, that above all, determined, dutiful, single-minded) and Lyanna (protective, kind, fierce) and shares NOTHING with Catelyn Tully.

I love Windbreaker so much; the anime is top tier- and I do eventually wanna start reading the manga but like- we'll see where life takes me arkejarjkaejkr I have this Headcanon that Togame is 99% Ler, 1% Lee but that one percent is taken by Choji. I wanted them to have happiness after their arc so here we are! :D

Spoilers for Ep. 8-10 of Wind Breaker!

Summary: After their much needed "hangout" with Bofurin, Choji is back to being his old lovable self. Togame has a lot of emotions he's still trying to figure out in the wake of it. Choji decides to help him.

“Kame!” Choji’s cheerful voice shook him free from his thoughts, bringing Togame back to reality. When he blinked, he found the smaller boy smiling brightly, making little grabby hands. “Uppies!”

“...Pfft-” He puffed his cheeks, trying not to laugh. “You’re still you, huh?” He reached out, tucking his hands under Choji’s arms and lifting. “Up you go-”

“Yee!” Like the spider monkey he was, Choji quickly adjusted himself so he was sitting on Togame’s shoulders, legs cushioning his neck and hands in his hair. “Ah, I missed this. Look how tall we are! Kame- let’s buy a trenchcoat! We can be two kids in a…Kame?”

The brunette was quiet; staring down at the concrete beneath their feet. It was all so, so nostalgic. The feel of Choji hadn’t changed; his grip was both loose but sturdy. His legs were warm beneath his shaking hands, feet bouncing to a rhythm only Choji ever heard. The sights were suddenly rather blurry.

“Kame?” Choji asked again, bringing him back with a small tug to his hair. “Kame, you there?”

“Yeah..yeah, I’m here. I’m here.” He nodded, squeezing Choji’s shin in what he hoped felt reassuring. Something dripped and landed on his toe. Must be raining.

Choji was quiet above him, his foot slowing down as he focused his attention on his friend. The hands in his hair switched from gripping to soothing, gently patting it down as Togame willed the rain to pass. Eventually, he scooted back, readjusting his legs until he was starting to slide off.

I ruined it. Togame thought with some bitterness, smiling weakly. Of course I did.

The apology was on his tongue-

“Boop!” Choji was clinging to his back now, a finger jabbing into the back of his ribs. “No more rain clouds!”

“Ah!” The taller boy jerked at the touch, arching some. “C-Choji!”

“Boop! Boop, boop boop!” Giggling, the tiny gremlin carried on poking that dastardly spot, legs tight around Togame’s waist and his other arm hooked around his shoulder. “Boooop!” He dug in, twisting his finger as he dragged out the word.

“Ehehehaha- coohohme on dohohohon’t! Gehahaha! Geheheht ohohohoff!” Togame shuffled, twisting as he reached back to grab the other. “Yohoohou chahahn’t go arohoohund tihiihhckling me!”

“Yes I can! I can do whatever I want! And you wanna know why?” Choji laughed with him, switching from poking to kneading as he dropped his hand to the center of Togame’s ribs. “It’s because I’m free!”

“Aeahhahahhahaha! Nooohohoh, not thehehhehere!” Stumbling some, Togame leaned against the nearest wall, knees bending as the tickles grew. “Chohohohj-EE!” A sudden prod to his hip made him drop completely, leaving him face down as the smaller boy got comfortable. Seconds later, he was wriggling about with two hands attacking his ribs. “Chhohoohhohji! Chohoohohji! Aheahahhahahaha! Pleahahahhahse!”

“Oo, what’s wrong? Are you too ticklish, Kame? Huh?” A tug to his yukata forced Togame on his back, leaving him even less protected from the smaller boy’s antics. “Booooop! Boop boop boop boop booop!” He cried in glee, poking rapidly all over. “Come on- sing with me! Rain rain, go away!”

Togame couldn’t speak- let alone sing. He gasped for air through wheezy laughter as he squirmed about, his feet kicking behind Choji and sending his sandals flying. “C-Choohohohohji! Choohohohji coohohohme ohohohon!”

“Come again another day!” Hearing the sandals hit the pavement, he turned around, something devious entering his expression. “Why hello there~”

“Huuhuh? N-No! No, don’t you dahahre!” Togami tried to flatten his leg out, but Choji was quick, grabbing his pants leg and bringing his foot back into reach. “Pleahahahse wahhait! Wait! The rahahahin’s gone!”

Choji turned to look at him, narrowing his eyes suspiciously. “Hmm..yeah, the sky looks clear….” Togame sighed, relieved.

“Still- better safe than sorry.”

“CHOJI-” Togame cried, his voice cracking as fingers dragged over his foot. The only bad thing about owning sandals exclusively; it made him more prone to tickle attacks from Choji. “AHEHAHAHHAHA NOHOHOHOHOO!”

“There it is! There’s the rainbow after the storm!” Said boy cried in delight, still tickling. He relished in Togame’s old man wheezes and near silent squeaks as he flopped like a fish behind him, fingertips just barely brushing the back of Choji’s coat. “Is it gonna stay, Kame?”

“YHEHAHHAHAS! YEHHEHAHS STHAHAHP!”

“Are you sure?”

“YEHHEAHHAHAHS!”

“....You sure?”

“CHOHOHOHJI!”

“Pfft okay!” Laughing, he released his friend, turning back around to find Togame gasping for air beneath him, arm over his eyes. His cheeks and ears looked red, but his smile was all too familiar. “Heh, it’s nice seeing you laugh, Kame. Come on- look at me!” He pawed at the arm, pouting some. “I wanna see your face!”

“Ehehehee..ehhehehee..giihihive meheheh a se-EHE!” The taller boy jerked when his armpit got jabbed, making him shoot down his arm. “Soohoho impahahatient.”

Choji laughed brightly, reaching out and gently touching his cheek. “Good. It’s not there anymore.”

Togame blinked. Then the meaning of what Choji said hit him. “Choji..”

“No rain clouds!” Choji wiggled his fingers threateningly, making the other choke out a laugh.

“Okay, okay. No more. Not for a while, anyway.” Togame nodded, offering a hand to shake. Choji took it- yanking him to his feet rather quickly. “Whoa-!”

“Now, back to our scheduled ride.” Choji announced as he climbed up, his legs thrown over Togame’s shoulders and hands resting politely on his crown. “Off, Kame! To that one place that sells really good chicken!”

“Yes, your majesty.” The brunette laughed as he ran off, Choji whooping the entire time. The feeling from earlier came back, but this time it was a comforting one.

Favorite Canon/Potentially Canon moment - IE, something like Sirius comforting James after the DADA OWL and Lily’s reaction or (even though it’s platonic) the moment James asked Sirius to be Harry’s godfather.  

I think, because I am a sucker for angst, it might be Sirius's best man speech at the wedding. This all falls under potentially canon, heavy on the potentially. But I imagine Sirius was in love with James, and James loved Sirius. Because there's just no world where they don't love each other. It's just that James loved Lily too, and in the 70s/80s one of them was a more acceptable choice than the other. And it never really hit him that what he was doing with Sirius wasn't exactly fitting within the box of 'best friends'. He just loved Sirius, and that would always be true. And then his parents got sick and wanted to see him happy before they died, and James wanted to have them there for as much as possible, and he'd never questioned what his future would be and he didn't then either. He'd always known he'd marry a beautiful woman and have children to run around the house with their toy wands. And he did love Lily.

Sirius loved James in every way someone can love someone else. So it wasn't even a choice for him; if he didn't get to have James romantically he would take the pain of that rather than give up all the rest of it. He didn't tell James he would never love someone else. He didn't tell James he was in love in the first place. Instead, he encouraged James to go after Lily. Because Sirius loved James in every way someone can love someone else, and more than anything he wanted James to be safe and happy out in the sunshine. And he could only ever have the shadows with Sirius. Something hidden and shameful and illegal. And they could be best friends. Sirius loved him like that too, and it could be enough. Only, as one does, James's speech at the wedding was all about how lucky he was to be marrying his best friend and when Sirius stood up to speak not long after he could only hope everyone would believe the tears were just nostalgia and happiness for his friend.

I imagine he stood up and looked down at the man he loved, and the wife that Sirius had grown to care for. I imagine he wished them well, and meant it with his whole heart. I imagine he told stories about James asking Lily out and being turned down, about how James grew up and they actually got to know one another. I imagine he spoke about James's nerves before the first date, and didn't mention that Sirius sucked him off to soothe them. I imagine he didn't say how that was the last time they ever did anything like it, that he didn't say how much he wished the world was different and he could be the one in white. I imagine there wasn't a dry eye in the room, I imagine Sirius sighed with relief that they were all smiling too. I imagine he looked at Lily and asked her to take care of James for him. And I imagine if he'd looked at James he would have seen the heartbreak as he realised Sirius loved him in every way a person can love someone else, which James hadn't known until that very moment was even an option.
