The Polar Tang Layout/Blue Prints

I wanted to create what I feel is a realistic layout for The Polar Tang and this is what I came up with. Some extra research, references, and info below the cut if you're interested.

What Type of Submarine is the Polar Tang?

So the first thing I wanted to determine, is what type of Submarine The Polar Tang is in the first place. I looked into both diesel-electric and nuclear powered subs. While diesel-electric engines are smaller and would allow for more space in the Tang, I didn't feel that it could accommodate for the canonical speed of the Tang. Not to mention diesel-electric engines aren't designed for long journeys while nuclear engines are. As a nuclear sub, The Polar Tang would have more speed, attack capabilities, stealth, and the ability to go underway for longer stints.

Once I determined that The Polar Tang was a nuclear submarine, I started looking into the build and interior of nuclear subs. I didn't base the interior design for the Tang off any one sub, but some of my major references were the HMS Sceptre, the HMS Vigilant, the Swedish A-11A, and the American NR-1. (I also took quite a bit of information from Rick Campbell's site).

I particularly liked the NR-1 design as a starting point since it was the smallest nuclear sub the US built and it held a crew about half the size of the Heart Pirates. It was also a spy vessel and therefore had a similar level of stealth that the Tang seems to have.

How big is the Polar Tang?

This is a question that has bothered me for a long time. I feel like most people either grossly over or under estimate the size of the Polar Tang so, to try to solve this mystery I went through and collected as many screen caps as I could find that had the Tang next to other vessels (namely the Thousand Sunny) to compare it's size.

And I came to one conclusion: The Polar Tang and The Thousand Sunny are roughly the same size.

Oda has already given a fully layout of the Sunny (if you'd like to see that I have it in pdf form here). So keeping that in mind, when drawing up the floorplans/blueprints, I tried to make sure that the Polar Tang wasn't any larger than the Sunny.

So I wanted to include some miscellaneous information that I may not have included in the main images of the layout as well as some reference photos for what some of the interior might look like to give people a better idea.

Intercoms

The entire sub is outfitted with an intercom system. There are intercoms in every room, hallway, and in several sections of the engineering deck. These intercoms can be used to call specific rooms or decks as well as to make ship wide announcement and alerts. Every intercom can both send and receive messages and alert sounds.

Crew Quarters and Bathrooms/Showers

The crew Quarters and bathrooms/showers are co-ed (I say co-ed, but I like to think that Ikkaku is the only female Heart Pirate because I find it amusing and she's the only female crew member we canonically know of). For a better idea of what the crew's bunks look like, I was thinking something like these:

I mentioned above that the bathrooms are also co-ed and shared (yes this includes Law, he doesn't have a private bathroom or shower, just a sink vanity. A shower would take up too much space imo). I do think that (assuming Ikkaku is the only woman on the crew) Ikkaku would have a designated shower stall that none of the guys use, to insure her privacy and a clean shower. (look it's me cramming in my own hcs lol)

Helm Controls

I also wanted to include a reference photo for the Helm control since we only get to see the control on the Tang from one perspective with Hakugan at the Helm.

Engineering Deck

While the engineering deck doesn't have rooms, it is still a walk-able space, but is very tight with some spaces only being accessible if you were to crawl into them to work on those sections of the engine. Similar to the Galley, the engineering deck would have a fail safe system in case of a fire. The deck is split into sections separated by fire doors. If a fire is detected, an alert will sound (accompanied by flashing lights) and crewmen will have a finite amount of time to vacate the area before the fire door seal it off and suck all the oxygen out to extinguish the fire and prevent an explosion

i think for Kris, their relationship here w Susie n Noelle isn't as... obvious? for lack of better words lmao. theyre arospec, imo. they probably very rarely would call either of em their girlfriends, BUT. they don't mind if Suz or Noelle call them their partner.

Kris n Susie, their relationship is more casual, and they wouldn't always have the expectations of each other that you'd see in a usual relationship. they're best friends, w some other stuff goin on that you can't not call gay as fuck though. post-Deltarune, i think Susie'll open up more to bein comfortable with displays of affection (hugs, hand-holdin, etc yget th picture), which... still isn't always Kris' style. n she's fine w that. they're more often th one to engage in such displays when they feel ready. could see her finally openin her arms wide n she just wraps them up in her jacket while they start playin a game or some shit. she's still 100% th kinda person t just shake them, drag them along, noogie em n shit though. i think queerplatonic could be a fittin label for them

Kris n Noelle... their relationship is Something. it'll always be different from simply Partner and Girlfriend, or Just Friends, but they'll always be inexplicably tied in a way where they can't NOT be together. too complex of a past to put an exact name on what they have, but honestly i don't think they'd care very much to try, anyways. i think Noelle probably more often is the one to give hugs and stuff, while Kris shows their affection by like. pranks, scaring her, helping out, and stuff like that. kinda like how they were when they were younger. just a bit different now.

Susie and Noelle! girlfriend n girlfriend, hugs n kisses, yknow, the usual stuff you'd expect in a relationship, i think. it's cute as hell. while Susie is hesitant with romance, i think she really starts to open up with Noelle

overall, i think they're all super important to each other, and the three of em would care for one another in a way that, for the most part, is not easily definable by just friends OR romantic partners

My Big Damn Ashes of the Academy Thoughts

Okay so honestly I just need to take this panel by panel because frankly my overall impression of the comic is that everyone got replaced Invasion of the Body Snatchers style with people that look the same as they do and have the same name, but have zero idea of the backgrounds or motivations of said characters, and so they were just making shit up as they went along. Like, I write fanfic, I read fanfic. I have, in general, a pretty high regard for fanfic. And of course one of the more common Dangerous Ladies childhood type fics is how did they meet, why are these three very different individuals friends, etc etc.

And this was not even approaching the worst, crappiest, least coherent of that type of fiction I've read over the last nearly two decades.

Ashes of the Academy is a giant nothing burger comic, a fart in an elevator you're trapped with until you can make your escape.

So, without further ado, let's begin:

So right here on the second page of the comic, and the first page with dialogue, we have Ursa letting us know that, apparently, contrary to what we know, the Academy made Azula a bad person. Not her parents, definitely definitely not Ursa. You got that? It was all the Academy's fault. And we will continue beating that ostrich horse the entire rest of the comic, make no mistake!

Ah yes, Ursa, noted Not Ever An Imperialist At All, Not Even Once, Nuh-Uh.

Credit where credit is due, I like these two panels. I like this tiny glimpse into the friendship of Kiyi and Lihua or whatever here. One, because I imagine this is more like how Azula probably actually was, based on what we see in Zuko Alone. And two, that means Kiyi is unconsciously mirroring her sister and I like that interpretation of her character. It seems that Hicks does too, on a subconscious level. Look at that devious little look on her face! Little shit. Yeah, you cause a ruckus! Adorable.

I'd be lying if I said this didn't get a chuckle out of me. Is Katara on Zuko's Ministry of Education? Lol wtf. Still funny though.

More Kiyi being a little shit that I can get behind. This time in a Little Miss Know-It-All superiority complex sense that I'm sure would get real old real fast for anyone around her.

I've pointed this out on another post but Kiyi isn't a princess? Wtf? Come on, Hicks. Like it's not hard to figure this shit out. I think giving her a character trait of literally running to her big brother the Firelord anytime she feels slighted is pretty good, but of course it's never explored, because that's not a heroic trait and Kiyi has to be a hero for some reason unlike that irredeemable monster Azula who was born bad.

So nice of you to ask her first Zuko! Fuck's sake! Being Firelord has really gotten to this boy's head, like I know he has absolute power and all that shit but damn, if I was Mai, I would be wanting to get back with him less after this, not more, regardless of whether or not I liked the job in the end. Fucking consent, bro! (Previous page has him telling the headmistress she'll do it.) Unfortunately, this is actually not ooc for what we've seen of Zuko, honestly, imo. Mai, you can do so much better. Like, I ship Maiko. I love their dynamic etc etc. But girl. Respect yourself. This boy is NOT it at this point.

This is our continuing indication that they'll be rewriting the past in this comic, and we'd all better get on board. Zuko certainly thinks Azula treated him badly and has a very, "Zuko did nothing wrong!" approach to it all, but Mai was there for the vast majority of it, witnessed it with her own two eyes, so she would not react to that sentence with, "True." She just wouldn't. At least not the Mai we know. So let the assassination of Mai’s character commence!

Like, was this comic so half-assed nobody could be bothered to look up the spelling of Ukano's name? Yes. Yes it was.

Can I be made to believe Ukano said this to Mai when she was smol? Absolutely, yes. He's portrayed as a social climber and willing to utilize basically any route he can access to gain clout and influence. That's a man who is not above using his daughter in this way. I think it's somewhat implied by Mai’s dialogue in The Beach, even. Dude was a shitty father, Caldera was rife with them. Do I believe for one second Mai became friends with Azula because of this counsel? Absolutely not. The Mai we know thinks for herself 100% of the time, it's basically her thing.

Hi! Love ur art and all and wanted to ask about ur opinion of the Polle-Anya theory thing. As you know, near the end of the game, you get Polle kinda scolding Jimmy yk? I have a theory where that was Anya's last message to Jimmy and maybe even Curly. This can be backed up by the fact that Polle's text color is written in Blue like Anya's and there's a moon in the back. Plus, if you take out Jimmy responses, it can be interpreted as an angry, sarcastic message. Polle also says "If all of that is true.. why are you still concerned with HIM?" This could be towards Curly, saying that if Curly really was trying to help and all, why is he still taking Jimmy's side and such? I get how Curly wanted the best for everyone. He obviously didn't want that happening to Anya but he still wanted to see the best in Jimmy. However, in Anya's eyes, it's like Curly's prioritizing Jimmy, saying that he would never do something like that, saying that "I want to help you but Jimmy's not a bad guy! He can't be! Yknow what I mean? Anyways, curious on your thoughts about it :)

Polle is a stand in representation for Anya and I believe it. Another thing other than of course the text color and the night screen associations that solidified it for me is the chapter descriptions in the developer mode within the game, there are chapter selections for easier navigation if you wanna play a specific one and all of them have descriptions and names. What is interesting about this is that all the final bizzro sequences are named for which character they are intended to be:

Interesting idea about it being meant for Curly, but I don't see it that way. "Why are you still so concerned with Him?" line is a response to Jimmy profusely apologizing to Curly and feigning remorse, then being interrupted while saying "Our worst moments don't make us--" to which Polle sarcastically replies and inquires. And even if Polle is definitely a stand-in for Anya, the speech itself are things she would say herself to Jimmy or Curly, at least not in this manner. This line is about focusing so much of your supposed "regret" as an attempt to divert attention from another person Jimmy hurt, who never gets any conscious acknowledgement from the perpetrator. And i think this line is contributing more towards Jimmy's character than Anya's imo. Interesting idea tho!

I think it's important that with Curly, Jimmy never once in the game acknowledges that he crashed the ship, nor has he ever said sorry for physically abusing him. Jimmy is always vague about his regret and avoids accountability for any specific action he's done so he keeps it nonspecific, saying he was "trapped" that he "made a mistake" which could mean anything at all, "Why is Jimmy so concerned with Curly?" is the question to Jimmy as an acknowledgement of his constant affinity to never take credit for anything he has done. Because Jimmy is only 'concerned' with Curly to a degree to which Jimmy can make himself feel better about it, using the idea of Curly and feeling regret about "his tragically ruined long-time friend" he is more than happy to play a narrative of admitting that Curly is a "better man" (whatever that means) if it allows Jimmy to never admit to any harm he's done. To Jimmy, Curly is a means to avoid accountability in himself, Polle as a stand-in for Anya is a final and most crucial obstacle to Jimmy's freedom to do that.

And of course he never acknowledges he raped Anya, the very thing that started it all. He doesn't "justify it" but rather he completely blocks it out from his mind, everything associated with it is purposefully cryptic, horrific or obscured: the long horse in the getting the mouthwash sequence, the Pollepede and the ultrasound sequence and of course Anya herself being substituted by Polle in Jimmy's mind because it creates a layer of disconnect from the actual person he hurt, he can't face Anya so he makes up and projects the idea of Anya onto Polle. And it is easier to make himself believe he fucked up and admit this vague narrative of caring about Curly rather than thinking of Anya.

So, "Why is he so concerned with Him?"

Because Jimmy needs to avoid responsibility.

Happy Marriage to Pancake and Starlo!

May these two fine the happiness and laughter in the next chapter of their lives. Through thick and thin, sickness and health, they're gonna stick together. Especially after what they had gone through before this moment.

The whole town arrived. This is the sheriff getting married after all! So many people wasn't expecting him to get married, to Pancake no less! The rivalry was a big part of the town's history, being tied to North Star himself, and seeing them get closer and closer was fun and kinda crazy. The whole town knew, and Pancake is married to Starlo. Feisty Four are also happy that they're married. And a few bets had to be paid.

Now they're off to the next chapter in their lives. And they still stick to each other like velcro.

I have no idea why this guy chose me. Like, at all. I look at him, and that's my husband. I feel so oddly connected to him, and I've said this before, but he is someone I genuinely wanna marry. Starlo is my beloved, my soulmate, I love him so much, its insane that he picked me. Legit, it felt like he picked me all those months ago. Back in January. Does anyone remember when I was so happy with OTCore and the "2024 is the year of the robots?" Yeah, guess what happened XD

Starlo helped me in so many ways, keeping me sane through so much. Originally it was gonna happen on the six month anniversary, but I ended up being too tired. Regardless, I'M SO HAPPY TO DO IT NOW!!

I look at him and I melt. I just, I love him. He loves me. I have never felt this connected to ANY fictional character like this. Spamton came close, really close. But oh well.

This was a DOOZY! Spent like, four straight days working on this. And I'm so happy I did. The colored comic is a reference to this video. It fits so well cuz its something Starlo would say and, well, PANCAKE'S NAME!! And Starlo hasn't dated anyone at ALL, there's no way he was expecting to marry someone.

Also the gif wasn't supposed to be a gif! I was trying to make a more dynamic pose for Pancake, but I already had the other sketch made, so it turned into a gif. Makes it better imo. Also I'm not too happy with Pancake's outfit. The cape is also a poncho of sorts. ah well. im also too lazy to draw the Feisty Four and Clover after all the stuff i've drawn all of this.

All-time Favourite Dramas 10/10 🌟

Here's all my absolute 10/10 dramas, both korean and chinese with ratings, tags, and my thoughts in general.

Lovely Runner - 10/10 Finished 2024-05

Truly a masterpiece from start to finish. Some incredible twists at the beginning that take the plot to somewhere completely new. The fantasy is handled so well in developing the love story and tension. SML borders on second lead syndrome, but they are the only drama to handle that role properly imo. Honestly perfect. Not a single episode or plot point I didn’t like. 

Favourite quote: “It will rain tomorrow. Then as you wait for the rain to stop, live another day. If you keep this up, there might a come a day when life doesn’t seem so miserable.” Tags: time travel, love triangle, idol drama, rom com, serial killer villain, mental health and disability themes

Twenty Five, Twenty On - 10/10 Finished 2023-08

I will never recover from this drama. I cried and laughed and fell so in love with the entire cast. The friendship between the two female leads is beautiful. Nam Joo-hyuk the actor that you are. That ending will be permanently etched on my heart. Another incredible display of how talented female writers are in kdramas.

Hospital Playlist 1 & 2- 10/10

If you like Grey's Anatomy for the relationships and friendship however, this is the show for you. Medical stuff is sometimes boring in this one, but the found family and ships 100% make up for it. Also there's like 100 episodes of behind the scenes to watch and the cast is too cute. 

Season 2 is honestly even cuter than season 1. I love this show so much. I dunno why people didn't like this season as much, I loved finally getting to see the couples get together and I think the medical stuff is slightly more interesting in this season.

Doom at Your Service - 10/10 Finished 2023-07

Cried my eyes out. Park Bo Young is too cute. The whole premise is so good and they do such a good job pacing it and throwing in twists to keep it interesting. Also has made me a huge Seo In Guk stan, the man is crazy talented at playing a villain with a heart of gold.

Reborn Rich - 10/10 Finished 2023-09

There has never been a better revenge drama. Succession meets time travel fantasy meets enemies to lovers romcom meets 90s period piece. Song Joong Ki absolutely nails it once again.

My Name - 10/10 Finished 2023-07 

Despite being traumatized by the ending, this is still one of my fave dramas. The acting. The fight choreography. The romance. 10000/10. Pil-do might be one of my favourite male leads ever. I love me a soft boy who would do anything to protect his strong, independent woman.

Romance is a Bonus Book - 10/10 Finished 2023 -07 

So rewatchable. Truly the coziest kdrama out there. A great start into noona romances too. Also the line where she talks about how it was so nice to be called by her name, instead of “mom”, “honey”, “you” really stays in my heart. Also started my obsession with Jong-Suk.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - 10/10 Finished 2023-08 

Absolute perfection. Jun Ho is the new standard. Deals with autism in a surprisingly modern way. Some interesting episodes on feminism in the workplace too.

Favourite line: "All my thoughts tend to center around me, so I make people close to me lonely. I don’t know when or why I do that. And I don’t know what I can do to stop it."  Tags: legal drama, autism, workplace romance

Flower of Evil - 10/10 Finished 2024-05 

So good that I had to stop and take a break at ep. 14 because I didn't want it to end. The closest I've ever seen to a truly romance thriller genre. The romance between this married couple - despite one of them potentially being a psychopath murderer lol - is literally one of the most adorable and authentic in any drama I've seen. This drama has definitely given me an unhealthy bias for Lee Jong Gi soooo...

Favourite line: "He is the father of my child. He is my family. He is my person. He has a wife who will stand by his side no matter what happens."  Tags: married couple, serial killer thriller, detective drama

Nevertheless - 10/10 Finished 2023-06 

Female gaze times a million. And the supporting cast is one of my faves (except for the TAs, they were boring as all hell). It’s also one of the few kdramas that tackle a relationship that’s kind of “friends with benefits” and you can very much tell it was written by a woman.

I get why some people really don’t like this one, but I’m a big believer in not needing the main characters to be good people for it to be a good piece of art. Everyone is very flawed in this (nearing on toxic), but it tells a lot of important stories that I really connected with.

Favourite line: "I know it will cause me pain again. Nevertheless..."  Tags: friends with benefits, college drama, red flag ml, love triangle

Hot Stove League - 10/10 Finished 2024-03 

Baseball is life. Definitely the best sports drama out there, although it’s a close race with Love All Play. This drama has no romance, so I was really surprised that it hooked me so much. But the drama is amazing. The villains are so good. And mostly I just love this goddamn sport man. Even if you don’t like sport, I think you’ll enjoy the twists and turns and found family dynamics of this one. Also Park Eun Bin never misses. 

Favourite quote: "Everyone's situation is different, we all fight with the resources that are available to us. If we start listing excuses, we'll lose again in the same situation."  Tags: sport drama, found family, no romance

It's Okay Not to be Okay - 10/10 Finished 2023-07 

This was a slow start for me because I found the main female lead so annoying at first. But trust me she grows on you. Literally one of my fave dramas now. The emotions are SO real, I was crying constantly. Very attached to this little trio now. And the parallels of the beginning and ending are soooo good. All the characters have so much character growth, some of the best writing I’ve seen in a kdrama.

Favourite line: "Your body is honest. When you're in physical pain, you cry. But the heart is a liar. It stays quiet even when it's hurting."  Tags: enemies to lovers, autism, mental health

Alchemy of Souls - 10/10 Finished 2023-10 

Absolutely binged this. Such a fun watch. The lore is really cool too. My only thing is I LOVED the female lead from S1 and it felt weird not to have her in the second season. Also second season felt a bit rushed on the ending. Otherwise perfection.

Love to Hate You - 10/10 Finished 2024-04 

Incredible binge watch. Only 10 episodes, and all about 40 min or less. They don't get distracted by any unnecessary side stories and really just focus on the characters. Both the ML and FL are incredible, and the secondary couple is just as cute. I will forever remember the look that he gives her when she finally says I love you back. A great mix of comedy and swoony romance.

Hidden Love - 10/10

Incredible coming of age story. I rewatch it constantly. I put off watching it at first because of the description of the age gap. But honestly they handle it so well and their relationship becomes so beautiful and healthy. Definitely one of the healthiest relationship I've ever seen portrayed in a drama.

When I Fly Towards You - 10/10

The most beautiful little love story. No angst, no tension. Just blissful first love with a happy ending. Super slow burn so keeps you invested. Love the male lead's character development, from shy and quiet to confident and smiling all because of her. The friends are also so cute and amazing. Second romance is perfect. It's essentially 2521 with a happy ending.

Disclaimer: i am on the whole not crazy about actor interviews. I think most of the time they're awkward promo, but 911 interviews in particular just kinda suck. Most of the more indie/fandom publications have an interviewer who has a preconceived narrative they push and won't ask about anything that doesn't cater to a very insular section of the audience, which means the majority of the article is an actor finding new and inventive ways of saying 'stop asking about this, i want to talk about something else'. But the more mainstream ones aren't much better- remember when oliver stark had to correct that journalist about his character's NAME? Idk what the deal is but man the interviews do not do this show any favors (to say nothing about the plotlines that are teased and then never make it onscreen tim what are you even thinking).

So there's just something very... refreshing? About lou's interview. He really focused in on tommy's character and thought process, and how he made little choices in his acting on how best to portray it. I really love tommy's face journeys, so it's awesome to have him break them down step by step. There's a real deliberate craft to his acting, and i enjoy learning about how he gets into tommy's head. Something cute i noticed is that when he's explaining tommy's thoughts and actions he often will use first person, saying stuff like i'm thinking this or i'm feeling that- to the point where he has to specify when he's talking about himself as lou. To me it's a clear testament to his work embodying a character with a complex internal world- even when the writing is weird or abrupt, he puts in the work to make it make sense.

Idk what i'm even trying to say here. I think i would enjoy actor interviews if they were more like this one. Idc abt a future plotline that probably won't happen. Idc abt a non canon ship that has been nixed over and over for years (too gently if they haven't gotten the message yet imo). Idc abt any of that tell me why u made that expression when u said that line and tell me why u said it that way. Tell me what ur thinking, what ur character is thinking. I'm spending my free time analyzing these scenes and it's really cool to learn that someone is putting in the effort to construct something that is meant to be delved into.

Overall the show is visually pleasing (aside from some styling choices). The cast is strong and very talented. The music is excellent. There's a lot of characters being introduced but that's typical of anything Tolkien related. Thanks for getting this far! I'll continue episodes 5-8 in a separate post ✨🩷

stancy & mileven

GOOD LORD THIS IS A LONG ONE. but i hope you guys enjoy it)

so i often think about stancy and mileven in the grand scheme of the show & fandom. if someone ships mileven it’s almost a guarantee that they will ship stancy too. i’m gonna be honest this usually tells me 1-2 major things about the person, you’re too young and have a very immature outlook on love OR you’re used to face value & toxic love/infatuation.

stancy is THE most perfect portrayal of the first “popular” / “bad boy” boyfriend a teenage girl most often gets. i say this from experience, like nancy i was a “good girl” that became infatuated with my first boyfriend, a trouble maker/womanizer but a good time. that is what stancy represents, a good time but nothing permanent or even endgame just the guy who makes her feel special. it kills me how much i relate to nancy but it also kills me more to think about how people are romanticizing stancy because of season 4. we just watched the rest of the show with our eyes closed huh? yes he was very sweet coming back to help clean up the movie theatre and IG the season 4 confession about his dreams with her were “cute”. but i’m sorry to say this like its not the most obvious thing ever but, you do NOT have to love someone because they love you. love is not enough to keep a relationship together. and unfortunate all steve has for her is that same high school idealistic view of nancy that made him fall for her. steve did not understand nancy, nor her goals her passions. that specific scene in s4 when jonathan listed off how hardworking and determined she was and how he couldn’t come between her and her goals. he showed what she REALLY needed, someone who understood her and knew that he couldn’t get in the way of that. steve and nancy are what people who don’t understand how mature relationships are. they’re not codependent (like steve + nancy). they’re not fully based around lust (like steve + nancy). they’re not based all on the goals of one person (like steve describing his insane dream of marriage and kids asap). (PS showing steve with like 10 other girls away from nancy and then bringing back his “i actually always wanted nancy all along in s4 was LAME and just a way to show the audience imo that those ships are also SUPERFICIAL AS HELL. the audience saw right through it, that nancy and jonathan were better for each other, it might’ve revived some stancy shippers to hear the “i love her still” about nancy. but guys COME ON. you’re telling me the GA somewhat saw through that fake revival of feelings but not through mileven and mike’s confession? i cannot today.) anyways i wanna say that if jancy not endgame, that’s insane first off, but second nancy can be alone and independent but to put her back with steve would be like the worst possible outcome. just like mileven.

as for mileven, it’s the same thing. as i stated before i was a mileven lover, but i was also 10/11 and i wasn’t aware that queer relationships could happen. if we take out the byler aspect of why mileven is doomed. we completely overlook the fact that they are the young version of stancy. the love at first sight lie, something that i know many girls can probably relate to, my elementary boyfriend seemed like my husband. i was conditioned to think heteronormative thoughts, that i had to absolutely marry a man and i had to be someone’s perfect wife. that’s why mileven fans think it’s the perfect outcome for mileven wedding and naming kids after the members of the group that may die. it’s not just childish but it comes from a lack of understanding complex relationships and from the conditioning of staying in a toxic relationship. mileven shows how empty and unreliable both mike and el are for each other, outside of mike being unable to say “i love you” to el, mike can’t stop idolizing her for ONE sole part of her identity (ahem steve + nancy w/ her being the good girl that’s a virgin) & el can’t stop idolizing mike for her idea of love (ahem nancy to steve when she grew up seeing her parents, thinking she can stay with him even after she felt her connection to jonathan and choosing to be with him because it was comfortable and it was easy, it’s what was expected of her by steve’s friends). both mileven and stancy represent what it means to be confined to heteronormative and social norms, they prevent you from becoming who you’re meant to be/ be with.

it’s crazy to me too because we see how many people LOVE nancy with a gun and think she literally is so badass and showed off incredible skill throughout the seasons and yet fail to see that the MAJORITY of those scenes are with jonathan?? (like will and mike they bring out the absolute best in the other). they know the other better than anyone else, even when they fight, they fight and it’s real, it’s raw. they fight through honesty and they fight because they love the other and they KNOW that they can take it. with jonathan calling out nancy in season 3, we see how he's calling her out for being immature for not being able to see that he is poor and he struggles and he needed that job, she fought with him bc it felt like he was coming from a place of ignorance and not addressing her mistreatment. they’re both incredibly honest even if it hurts the other one. versus her fight with steve, she can’t even honestly say the words “i love you”, so instead she stays silent. (HMM I WONDER WHO THAT SOUNDS LIKE…. mike queeler). but also when jancy is together they’re TOGETHER. they have heart to hearts, strong ones. they have MATCHING SCARS GUYS. even thousands of miles apart, they describe the other like the light of their life, they call out the TRAITS that make the other so wonderful (unlike steve who literally js thinks of nancy as his first love and who’s pretty). jonathon believed nancy and goes on a literal psychotic bender to find murray and get justice for barb, versus steve who remind me again, says they should try to be “normal” and party? yeah sounds a lot like another person trying to be normal. direct parallels blow me away btw, the GA has to be choosing to act blind on purpose. but yeah, let’s switch to mileven then byler. every major fight between mileven has been because mike lied or felt lied to. he felt lied to by el when she said that will was alive, he lies to her in s3 about his grandma and acts like he can’t completely understand her species (queer coding to the MAX) and in season 4 hes once again lying to her and SHE is also lying to him. dare i say, they’re not fighting with the OTHER, they’re fighting to keep their facade up.

and now let’s look at byler (my beloved)!!! 1) the first relationship established in the show is byler, like it or not, that moment of intimacy “it was a 7”, soulmate behavior. 2) complete and TOTAL trust from both of them. it’s interesting that will only tries to tell two people in the show that hes still alive. joyce his MOTHER, and MIKE with his walkie talkie. not jonathan who has a radio system? not dustin? not lucas? not hopper? the police? no. he chooses his mom and mike, interesting. 3) he hides his struggles from his friends and his family, everyone treats him like hes weak like hes different but not mike? why not mike? i mean he spends the most time with mike and yet, you’re telling me mike never once maybe slipped over his words and said something insensitive, no instead he “makes him feel better for being different”. 4) now onto the actual fights, bc this is really long. when will and mike fight, it’s raw and real, it hurts the audience to see will hurting because he’s been through so much trauma, and yet, mike hurts him anyways, but will CANNOT stay away. one moment i think we forget to mention is in s2, when mike gets angry about max, mike takes a jab at will. “did you agree to this?” “you should’ve told ME first.” will literally looks SO defeated & hurt. why mike? why does will need to tell you? you’re the leader? you own will? no. it’s bc will wasn’t honest to him, will didn’t come to mike about a big decision. also yeah a little gay bc why are you mad about a girl. but okay. and the season 3, yes the rain fight is back. i won’t dissect it any more but i will say, mike’s cruelness towards will was so unwarranted. but will’s willingness to say what no one else was willing to was yet another example of how deep their relationship is. calling mike out for being a shit friend, that’s will being what mike asked of him (season 2 halloween & honesty), and yet mike’s become too afraid of revealing his own feelings, but he’s still somewhat honest to will. he’s projecting his feelings to will, he’s TELLING ON HIMSELF here. and yes we know he regrets it runs back. but the fight is what matters it’s them still being real and honest to the other even if they don’t realize it just yet. season 4 is just another extension of the season 3 fight, but this time, they’re both projecting/accusing and yet insanely they’re both still being honest. will’s accusing mike of yet again abandoning him while deflecting his fault for not calling and mike’s projecting his homosexual thoughts into will, and yet again hes still being fully transparent to will, he calls out will’s bad behavior & WILL’S lack of effort too. all of this to say, we can see as the audience, queer or not, it’s practically crystal clear that stancy & mileven are parallels and only exist to show the audience immature, unreal love. while byler & jancy actually show the hardships of true love. romantic or not, they show how love is meant to be. it’s mean to be hard it’s meant to be painful, it’s meant to make you doubt, take a step back and remember that nothing is perfect but that it can always be worked through. byler & jancy make ALL parties involved better/uplift the other while stancy & mileven do the opposite they lead to lying, they lead to trying to uphold the “perfect” couple image and forgetting to make the other better because they’re too busy trying to make themselves look good. these ships are selfish and don’t put the other person’s needs into perspective. CRAZY btw that stancy (platonic) & elmike are WONDERFUL. they showcase the care they have for the other and how deep their relationship can actually become when they’re faced with life or death. one example is how mike reacted in season 3 when billy was coming after el and he found his courage to hit billy (mileven was broken up) but in season 4 despite being together and all love dove, in a serious moment, mike just can’t do anything to help el, she needed him and yet he couldn’t deliver romantically but he could platonically! reminding her to fight vs the i love you’s (duffers were crazy for this.

basically, stancy & mileven CANNOT be endgame and byler and jancy don’t have to be endgame bc the wheelers might enter an independent era. however, they cannot return to the people that have done nothing for their character development except show the audience how much better off they are without them. also if you think about it this is literally applicable to all endgame ships, jopper, duzie, lumax, & rovickie. nobody doubts jopper, why? because bob was adorable but they were low-key superficial, hopper understood joyce and was willing to believe “crazy joyce”. and even their fights in season 3, so interesting that we see this olive branch that exists between them from joyce even after they spend the ENTIRE season arguing. lumax, endgame from the jump, dustin was superficially fascinated with max bc she was a girl that had boy-ish interests he didn’t even know her, he didn’t try like lucas really did, you could say he didn’t have the chance, but it’s just too clear that lucas saw her as an equal, dustin saw her as an ideal figure (HMMM) & rovickie + stobin , teaches the audience that queer people deserve love and acceptance, exactly what they’ve been denied over and over. and dustin and suzie, insane that dustin had to teach steve that social norms don’t matter, that he should pursue the person who understand him best. suzie is gorgeous to dustin and she’s a brainiac that is now dustin’s equal. dustin has his disability but it doesn’t change at all how suzie sees him, she sees him for his perfections. jonathan is the outcast with mrs. perfect, two people who don’t “make sense” and yet fit together better than any popular jock for nancy. and byler, don’t get me started AGAIN, no one understands will like mike does, and no one makes mike feel better than will does. these ships don’t have to make sense to the outside world, just to the other.

I ship Valitsa, Saracen x Dexter (i refuse to acknowledge their ship name’s existence) and Ghanith. If i manifest it hard enough, Darquesse brought back Saracen, Anton, Billy-Ray and Jack like how she did Ghastly when she restarted the universe. argue with the wall, unless we get actual written proof in the books that they’re dead and not coming back i will continue to pretend they’re alive. Also i HATE romantic Valduggery, keep them AWAY from me. I would happily kill Erskine Ravel given the chance. I hc Skulduggery as autistic because let’s be honest, all those things he knows about literally everything? That’s SO autistic coded. And i hc Valkyrie as having ADHD, and Omen as having both. If i could i’d be a necromancer tbh because that’s actually such a cool discipline, i’d have my object that bolds my power be a conductor’s baton because imagine that shit. Do you like minizines?

Hi! I've recently been getting into making zines, and something I've noticed over time is that most fandom zines are closer to books then what zines were in the past. Those are great, but I also love being able to print out and fold a minizine and have a small book!

This won't work exactly like a major zine project. I'm not interested in having people apply to be contributors or having multiple mods or having merch around it. Instead, it’ll be people submitting individual works, and some will be chosen to be included in the final mini zine.

Also, this probably won't be just one, minizines (imo) are fun to make and not terribly complicated to design so if there's interest I'd love to do multiple of these! Lastly, I want to include stuff beyond just art and fic, like meta or comic rec lists or cosplay or photography. However, like most zine projects, this will be collaborative and include mostly other peoples' creative output!

What even is a minizine?

Typical fandom zines in 2025 tend to be, essentially, books filled with fandom content. Which is fun, and I like it! But minizines are older and more DIY. They're mini booklets made from one sheet of paper folded & cut (and sometimes stapled). I have some examples on my zine sideblog, @zinesinjars.

My favorite two versions are the 8-page folded classic and the 16-page stapled mini booklet. Instructions for how to fold them are here and here, and will also be included in all posts.

What is allowed as a submission?

Like I said earlier, instead of having a list of contributors, anyone on here can submit individual works! You can submit as many as you want, and any one project can be submitted to as many zines as you want.

Most stuff is allowed, so here's a rundown of what is not allowed:

NSFW isn't allowed.

Neither are the following ships: brudick, brujay, dicktim, jaytim, brutim, dickjay/jaydick, Jason Todd x Damian wayne.

(intentional) Plagiarism. All submissions must be your own work. Including comic panels is fine as long as you state the comic that it's from and it's transformative in some way (like a comic edit or a redraw or smth). If you're really genuinely unsure, you can totally ask me but it's probably fine. This rule exists to make sure nobody is intentionally stealing other peoples fanart or fic or whatever and submitting it as if it’s their own.

Any use of generative AI. To me, what makes fandom worthwhile is its collaborative nature. It's built on labors of love and exists in conversation with both the original piece and with other fans. Anyone has the capacity to be creative, and anyone has the capacity to learn something new. Generative AI steals from artists, is environmentally damaging, and is something I never want to support. So absolutely no use of generative AI is allowed for this.

Pretty much anything else is allowed! Like, literally anything that can be creative. I would say, as a guideline, writing over 1k is unlikely to be allowed simply due to constrictions on space. In addition, minizines are vertical, so if your picture or drawing is square-shaped or taller than it is wide, it will print better than if it is landscape-orientation.

This being said, I'd be willing to accept almost anything that fits inside those guidelines. Traditional art, digital art, fiction writing, nonfiction dc-related writing, recipes, photographs, etc. Have fun and be creative!

These zines will be 100% free to print and distribute. Submitting is consenting to have whatever you submit in a zine that could be printed by anyone.

Since there's no money being exchanged or anything, pieces don't have to be exclusive to this zine. You're allowed to make something for the purpose of submitting it to this, you're allowed to submit something that you made a year ago, and you're allowed to post stuff that you submit both before and after the zine is published as much as you want.

you can submit as many or few pieces as you want! However I’m going to try to keep the amount of submissions per person even, so it’ll be likely for only one submission per zine to make it to the final project. If something isn’t used in the first or second (or whatever number it is) zine of a certain theme but there’s enough interest for a repeat zine of that theme, for up to a year it might also be included in a subsequent zine. You can submit a piece for as many zines as you want, but in all likelihood any submitted piece will only be selected for one zine.

Also, if your piece does not end up in the final product, that doesn't say anything inherent about it! It could mean anything, from the way it'll print to the amount of space it takes up to how it'll print to having a ship that isn't to my taste. It can even just be that there's a broad theme and I want to represent a broader scope-- like, I wouldn't want a green lantern zine to be 90% hal and 10% kyle if i could have something more like 30% hal, 20% kyle, 10% jo, 20% jess, and 20% john, yk? Something can be amazing and not make it. (I mean ideally that won't happen, but it might! Ideally as many things as possible will make it into end products lol)

Lastly, as this is a project run by one person, I'm not going to pretend to be unbiased. I have favorite ships and characters. I'm not going to intentionally favor them, but I may unintentionally favor them. If someone wants an end product more catered to their own taste, feel free to start your own! I don't mean this spitefully, I love zines and I love minizines and I would love to see more fandom minizines going around lately, and I fully intend to promote any other fandom minizines I see :3

There’s so much I love about your list of songs for ships and characters but I couldn’t possibly express it all! (And the Shin Soukoku Red art is like the best thing ever) Ranpoe the lakes is just genius. But Gin being Soon You’ll Get Better? Drive a stake through my heart why don’t you omg why. on the topic of tuca & bertie; can i just say how much I SO appreciate the way the series has handled bertie x speckle's relationship? mutually loving, both freely enjoying eachother's quirks (+bertie's bond to tuca), BUT also not being afraid to tackle the couple fighting/making up without it feeling forced (ex. the jelly lakes + molting day arc). i know many may call ships like m&m "hetero goals™", but IMO *berkle* (if that's their ship name lol) holds that candle better <333

Absolutely. One thing I love about Bertie and Speckle's relationship is the fact that they fight, and sometimes they get into big fights, but they come back even stronger from them. Speckle (rightfully) blows up and tells Bertie "I can't just be your rock all the time, sometimes I need you to be my rock!" And she listens, and come the next two seasons, that's exactly what she does. She becomes his rock too.

Hiii and hello! Thank you so much for your question (and your kind words about my fic!), @varda-star-queen, and no worries, I am always down for talking about silverscars! :D

Starting with the easiest bit - while I am very flattered by the thought, I didn't invent the ship nor its name! The first fic that I am aware of about these two was written by @plotdesigner and is called 'Hand in Gauntleted Hand'. The shipname itself came after, I got asked this question by someone else before and collected my 'research' in this post. (situations like these are when I am glad for my tagging system! XD)

As to why I ended up thinking of this pairing and began to ship them, and write about them, I think I saw so many parallels and similarities between them that got me; they both died the same season (though of course I still hope they might bring Adar back in the future), both of them through Sauron and rather painfully and tragically. They both don't have partners, they are leaders of their people, manipulated and used for Sauron's means. They both ended up resisting and defying him in some way, too, whether by (seemingly) killing him and freeing the uruk in the past, or by refusing Sauron's demands, and even Adar's decision to turn away from war and violence can be seen as resistance imo.

There are also differences that I found interesting; Celebrimbor likely lived through a sped up version of (some of) what Adar went through in the past under Sauron. One is the sole heir of an influential, famous elven family, the last of his line, the other is a nameless, former elf with no ancestors that we know of, first of his line, with many children, whether literally or figuratively. (To me it almost feels like a 'past and future' presentation.) Celebrimbor was named by his parents, Adar chose his own name. Celebrimbor is held in high esteem and founded his own city, Adar has to fight for the right to survive and have a home for his children, leading him to found Mordor. Adar founds Mordor in s1, Celebrimbor has his home destroyed by the end of s2.

(Also, I wasn't super versed in Silm lore when I started the series, but learning more about Celebrimbor's family history has only added more points to this; both of them must have lived through countless battles in Arda, perhaps even experienced the same ones from different 'sides'? And there are multiple references to Feanor in the series, with Celebrimbor's actions and deeds often being weighed and compared against those of his grandfather. Meanwhile, Adar is held responsible for and associated with Sauron and his cruelties. Influences they, likely, cannot so easily separate from and try to overcome, by besting Feanor and disavowing Sauron respectively.)

It's an intriguing combination of similarities and differences, to me at least.

And on a more personal level, my thought was that, if they met, a post-Sauron Celebrimbor might look at Adar and see the things he himself has just suffered and survived, and might therefore find a level of understanding and empathy for Adar that other elves might not reach; after all, if he has been manipulated and driven to create the Rings of Men despite his better judgement, someone else could have similar (and worse) happen to them as well, couldn't they? (He readily worked with Elrond and the dwarves, didn't have any reservations against Halbrand, showed understanding towards Galadriel.)

Meanwhile, Adar might see (a version of) his own past reflected at him, similar to what he did with Galadriel in the tent, though with Celebrimbor's experiences being different than hers. I imagine Adar might be able to help Celebrimbor move on from and overcome his trauma and guilt due to his own experiences and knowledge, give him guidance, and an understanding other elves may not be able to give Celebrimbor, due to not having endured the same thing.

I suppose that is the main thing that drew me in - in a sense, their individual experiences with Sauron serve as a connection between them, even if the two never meet on screen. (One might even argue that Sauron pits them directly against each other, via the siege.) Therefore, these experiences might work as a base from which they could build mutual understanding, empathy, and perhaps even more.

(Which, I also like the implications of that in general - that people who come from very different walks of life can recognize their similarities, set aside their differences, find comfort and connection in, and empathy for, each other after surviving awful things, help each other heal, and become stronger through this mutual kindness, affection, friendship (and more).)

And, as for what intrigues me about them being in a relationship - I think it is again a mix of similarities and differences. They both have elven roots. They are both leaders to their people and care about them, they have their own realms (though at different states, with Celebrimbor's either being finished or destroyed, and Adar's in its infancy), they are very driven when it comes to what they consider important. Celebrimbor is a craftsman, Adar has mostly known the fight for survival and is a fighter. Celebrimbor is royalty, Adar is not. Adar might be significantly older than Celebrimbor, the two have very different experiences of what happened through the ages.

It provides a lot of potential - for growth, understanding, drama, banter, humor, fluff, angst, healing, character studies, friendship, romance...

(As a sidenote, I also gravitate more towards m/m ships, which likely factors into this. Plus I think the fact that neither of them have canon partners in the series might have made me go "Oh look, wouldn't it be neat if they had someone as well?")

That being said, I could likely ramble even more. There is just a lot about silverscars that speaks to me, both when it comes to the individual characters and their potential as a ship. I hope that answered your question? I'd love to know!
