Thomas and Friends: Sodor Online Journeys (Christmas Story 1): Thomas's Christmas Party
It was Christmas on the Island of Sodor. All the engines were working hard. Thomas and Toby were busy carrying people and parcels up and down the branch line. Everyone was happy.
Only the coaches Annie and Clarabel were complaining. "It's always the same before Christmas!" they groaned. "We feel so full! We feel so full!" "Oh, come on!" said Thomas. "Where's your festive spirit? Christmas day is almost here." By the side of the track was a little cottage with a familiar figure waving to them. "It's Mrs. Kyndley." whistled Thomas. "Peep! Peep! Happy Christmas!" Thomas always felt better for seeing her. "Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without Mrs. Kyndley." he said to himself. When work was over, Thomas went to see the other engines. All their coats had been polished. "Huh!" said Gordon. "Just look at us. Your driver will have to work fast to get you as smart as us." "Never mind that." replied Thomas. "I've something important to say. Do you realise it's a whole year since Mrs. Kyndley saved us from a nasty accident? Do you remember when she was ill in bed and…" "Yes, of course." interrupted Edward. "You told us how she waved her red dressing gown out of her window to warn you about a landslide ahead." "And you and Toby gave her presents." Percy joined in. "Percy: And the Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt sent her to Bournemouth to get really well in the sunshine./And Sir Topham Hatt sent her to the seaside to get better." "But…" said James and Henry together/said the other engines. "…the rest of us have never thanked her properly." "Exactly." said Thomas. "So now I think we should all give her a special Christmas party."
Everyone was getting very excited, and the drivers felt sure that the Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt would agree, as indeed he did. The engines were all busy making plans, when silence fell. The Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt had bad news. "The weather's changed badly. Mrs. Kyndley is snowed up. Toby says he'll help to rescue her. You must help too, Thomas. There's no party unless you do." Thomas hated snow, but he said bravely… "I'll try, sir. We must rescue her, we must." "There's a good engine. You and Toby will manage splendidly."
Thomas charged the snowdrifts fiercely. Sometimes he swept them aside, sometimes they stuck fast, and the men had to loosen them. But at the cutting near the cottage, they could go no further. "Look at that!" exclaimed Thomas' fireman. "Peep! Peep! Peep! Here we are!" whistled Thomas. An answering wave came from an upstairs window. Then they heard a familiar sound. "That's Terence." said Thomas. "He's come to help too." Sure enough, Terence had a snowplough and was working hard to clear a path to the railway line and safety. At long last, the rescue was complete. Percy took the tired workmen home. Terence said goodbye to Mrs. Kyndley, and promised to take care of her cottage as he watched them all set off.
The engines made good time. No more snow had fallen, but the yard was dark. There was no one to be seen. Thomas' heart sank, but not for long. All the lights suddenly went on. What a marvelous site awaited Mrs. Kyndley. "Well done." said the Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt. "I'm really proud of you all." Mrs. Kyndley especially thanked the smaller engines. "Thomas and Toby are old friends." she said. "And now, Percy, you are my friend too." Percy was very pleased. "Three cheers for Mrs. Kyndley!" he called. "Peep! Peep! Peep!" they all whistled as they began to sing. ♪We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Good tidings we bring to you and your kin. Good tidings for Christmas, and a happy new year. We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.♪ Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends thought it was the best Christmas ever, and Mrs. Kyndley could think of nowhere should rather live, than here with them on the Island of Sodor.

Roles to be performed at the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey
Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce further details on the Ceremonial roles to be performed by individuals in the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey.
The Ceremonial roles include bearing the Regalia in the Procession and presenting the items to Their Majesties. Those undertaking these historic roles in the Service have been chosen to recognise, thank and represent the Nation due to their significant service, and include representatives from Orders of Chivalry, the military and wider public life.
The first processions into Westminster Abbey will be made up of Faith Leaders and Faith Representatives followed shortly afterwards by representatives from His Majesty’s Realms. Flags of each Realm will be carried by national representatives accompanied by the Governors General and Prime Ministers. Bearing the Flag of the United Kingdom ahead of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Mrs Akshata Murty will be Cadet Warrant Officer Elliott Tyson-Lee, who said: “It is a great and incredible honour to be a part of Their Majesties’ Coronation Service as a representative of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets."
This will be followed by The Procession of The King and The Queen which will be led by the Marquess of Anglesey, the Duke of Westminster, the Earl of Caledon and the Earl of Dundee who will carry the Standards of the Quarterings of the Royal Arms and Standard of the Principality of Wales. Francis Dymoke will carry The Royal Standard.
Mr Dymoke’s claim to undertake a historic role in the Coronation was upheld by the Coronation Claims Office. The title of King or Queen’s Champion has been held by the Dymoke family since the Middle Ages. The King’s Champion would previously ride on horseback into the Coronation Banquet and challenge any who doubted the right of The King or Queen to the throne. There has not been a Coronation Banquet since that held by King George IV in 1821 so the Champion has instead undertaken a different role since, usually bearing a flag or Standard.
Also taking part in the procession will be Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Chief of the Defence Staff, acting as Lord High Constable of England, an office held for the day only. Traditionally the Lord High Constable is a Great Officer of State and has historically been connected to the military. He will take part alongside the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk.
The Earl of Erroll will act as Lord High Constable of Scotland. Similar to that of Lord High Constable of England, this role has historically been connected to the military and the Earldom of Erroll through a Coronation claim. The Earl of Crawford and Balcarres will act as Deputy to the Great Steward of Scotland, HRH The Prince of Wales.
The following will then process to the altar carrying Her Majesty’s Regalia:
Baroness (Helena) Kennedy of The Shaws – Carrying The Queen Consort's Rod
General Sir Patrick Sanders – Carrying The Queen Consort's Sceptre
The Duke of Wellington – Carrying Queen Mary’s Crown
The Rt. Reverend and Rt. Hon the Lord Chartres– Carrying The Queen Consort's Ring
Lord Chartres said: “The ceremonies of the Coronation are ancient but they have been freshly interpreted for our contemporary world.”
The following will then process to the altar carrying His Majesty’s Regalia:
General Sir Gordon Messenger, the Governor of HM Tower of London – Carrying St Edward’s Crown as Lord High Steward of England
Baroness (Elizabeth) Manningham-Buller LG – Carrying St Edward's Staff
The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KT – Carrying the Sceptre with Cross
Baroness (Floella) Benjamin OM – Carrying the Sceptre with the Dove
Dame Elizabeth Anionwu OM – Carrying the Orb
The Keeper of the Jewel House, Brigadier Andrew Jackson – Carrying The Sovereign’s Ring
Petty Officer Amy Taylor – Carrying the Sword of Offering
Lord Hastings and The Earl of Loudoun – Carrying the Spurs
Lord President of the Council, Penny Mordaunt – Carrying the Sword of State in The King’s Procession
Air Chief Marshal the Lord Peach – Carrying the Sword of Mercy (The Curtana)
General the Lord Richards of Herstmonceux – Carrying the Sword of Spiritual Justice
General the Lord Houghton of Richmond – Carrying the Sword of Temporal Justice
General Sir Gordon Messenger, the Lord High Steward of England, (also an office held for the day only) is the most senior Great Officer of State for the Coronation, in order to bear the St Edward’s Crown into the Abbey, the most significant item of Regalia. On carrying St Edward’s Crown, General Sir Gordon Messenger said: “It is a huge and unique honour to be appointed Lord High Steward for His Majesty’s Coronation. To be playing a key role on such an important and historic occasion is a source of great pride to me, my family, the Royal Marines, and the Tower of London community.”
Petty Officer Amy Taylor will be the first woman to bear the Jewelled Sword of Offering into the Abbey. She has been selected to represent Service men and women, as a Royal Navy Petty Officer, a tribute to His Majesty’s military career. She said: "Having served most of my senior career as an Aircraft Engineer on 845 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton where His Majesty originally trained and served as a pilot, I am deeply honoured and humbled to play my part in this historic event. Coming from a farming family His Majesty has always been such a great advocate for our community and someone I have admired growing up."
Baroness Benjamin and Dame Elizabeth Anionwu are amongst recent appointees to the Order of Merit, the final members to be chosen for the Order by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Baroness Benjamin said: “I feel honoured and privileged to be part of the historic Coronation ceremony. To be selected to carry the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Dove, which represents spirituality, equity and mercy, is for me very symbolic as it’s everything I stand for and sends out a clear message that diversity and inclusion is being embraced."
Participating in the act of Recognition of His Majesty whereby His Majesty will be presented to the Congregation at the start of the Service will be:
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Baroness (Valerie) Amos LG, Lady Elish Angiolini LT, and Christopher Finney GC, Chair of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association.
During the Coronation Service the Regalia will be presented to Their Majesties. Those presenting have been chosen on the advice of Government. Those presenting Regalia to His Majesty will be:
The Lord Carrington, Lord Great Chamberlain – Presenting the Spurs
The Lord (Syed) Kamall – Presenting the Armills
Baroness (Gillian) Merron – Presenting the Robe Royal
The Most Reverend John McDowell, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh – Presenting the Orb
Lord (Narendra) Patel KT – Presenting the Ring
Lord (Indarjit) Singh of Wimbledon – Presenting the Coronation Glove
The Most Reverend Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness, and Episcopal Primus of Scotland – Presenting the Sceptre with Cross
The Most Reverend Andrew John, the Archbishop of Wales – Presenting the Sceptre with Dove
The Archbishop of Canterbury – Performing the crowning with St Edward’s Crown
Those presenting Regalia to Her Majesty will be:
The Rt. Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin CD, The Bishop of Dover – Presenting The Queen Consort's Rod
The Rt. Reverend and Rt Hon. Lord Chartres – Presenting The Queen Consort's Sceptre with Cross
Brigadier Andrew Jackson, The Keeper of the Jewel House at HM Tower of London – Presenting The Queen Consort's Ring
The Archbishop of Canterbury – Performing the crowning with Queen Mary’s Crown
On presenting Regalia to Her Majesty, The Bishop of Dover said: “I am surprised, excited and honoured to have been asked to play a part in this historic once in a lifetime occasion. As I make my presentation, both Their Majesties will remain in my prayers as they seek to serve the nation and the Commonwealth.”

Star Wars RPG: Dawn of the Rangers
S01E17 "Rangers Refreshed"
Location: New Republic Rangers HQ, Coruscant
After two days of rest, Captain Zor Draco (Martín), Gev Dyson (Edward), Olem (Eric) are summoned by Colonel Tyria Sarkin to the HQ's conference room on Level 3 of the Generis Arcology.
Sarkin introduces them to a new recruit, an Iotran New Republic Security Force officer named Kirino Mak (Carlos). She has been assigned to the team as a law enforcement agent.
The briefing begins. Sarkin recounts the team's experiences. They had been working for Agent Tailgunner at the Rangers branch at Karkbreath Peak on Vandor. The team was collecting (stealing?) materiel for Tailgunner. A Gozanti-class cruiser here. A flight of X-wings there.
Then their informant, old Mrs Stassie McPing, was assassinated by Tora Nuam for passing on an encrypted datacard with a warning about who they were working for. Nuam is their teammate Ordan Vallas' former flame. When they finally decrypted the datacard, via Zor's cousin Tarn Draco on Kitel Phard, they discovered that Tailgunner is one Beru Treedancer, working for the isolationist Imperial enclave known as the Pentastar Alignment of Powers.
Meanwhile, Republic Intelligence have no news of their vanished teammates Ordan Vallas, Pac Vesme and Captain Kin Asa Goddard. This sounds grim for the team.
According to Sarkin, the Pentastar Alignment is led by Moff Ardus Kaine who replaced Moff Tarkin as Oversector Outer Moff after the Battle of Yavin. A year ago, he gathered Imperial and corporate loyalists to unite on Entralla to form the PA. Information about them has been sparse since.
Gev proposed a straight up attack, but Sarkin tells him they don't have the resources and the New Republic takes ponderously long to decide.
Zor's proposed move is to scout for intel on Vandor. He refers to the Republic Sienar Systems star courier they found in a buried Sith Temple (under the old Jedi Temple) during the previous mission to repower Olem's lightsaber with a kyber crystal. That ship could have a cloaking shield they could use for effective intelligence gathering.
Sarkin tells them a 6-personnel tech team has been dispatched. One has been reportedly killed by a Sith War Droid. Another disappeared into a door in the Temple that itself disappeared. The remaining four are huddled together fearfully in the star courier cabin performing their analysis.
The Rangers' mission now is to go to the Sith Temple and protect the tech team long enough for them to assess the courier. But in the meantime, the team has been assigned a new ship down in the Hangar Bay in Level 10.
Before going there, Zor changes into his field uniform. They all meet the Quartermaster droid EV-44L4 for more gear. Kirino asks for a bomb defusing kit. Eve-Four is reluctant to release it, but she persuades the droid effectively.
They reach the Hangar Bay where two ships await in launch position. One is Kirino's Y-Wing fighter Blue One being tended to by R2-BA, her astromech droid.
The other is a dark grey Omicron-class attack shuttle with turquoise stripes across her three S-foils. They name her the Spotchka Starstreak. Everyone boards their crafts and prepares for launch. Gev wonders if the new team member will cut it. Zor replies, this is a good mission to test her skills.
When the Nikto crew chief signals them, they both take off. The two ships fly to their dark destination in formation.

"'Civilian Turned Soldier,' Says Kin," Toronto Star. October 2, 1942. Page 14. ---- SGT. JOHN CARROLL, EXTREME LEFT, AND SIR JOHN DILL, RIGHT --- "I think they should all get medals." declared Edward Carroll, Columbine Ave., when he was informed today that his brother, Sergt. John M. Carroll of the Royal Regiment, had been mentioned in dispatches in connection with the great raid on the French port of Dieppe." "John is a perfect example of acivilian made into a fine soldier." his brother said. "Before the war, John had absolutely no interest in military matters, but within two weeks of the declaration of war he was in the army. He said he just had to get in and help get rid of that guy Hitler.' He went into the first recruiting office he came to and it happened to be that of the Royals." Announcements following the Dieppe raid listed Sergt. Carroll as "dangerously wounded." Letters received by his mother, Mrs. Margaret Carroll of Kitchener, said he had been wounded by gunshot to the abdomen and the left thigh in the storming of the beaches.
"John left home at the age of 18 to join a carnival that came to town," Edward told The Star. "He was always adventurous, but very quiet about his accomplishments. He never mentioned his part in the raid except to say that he was wounded. This news will be welcome to his mother." Sergt. Carroll joined up in September, 1939. and went to England before his regiment to take a special course in trench mortar operation. Later he went to Iceland as an instructor.

Packaged with Care by the Elmira Red Cross Prisoner of War Committee By Rachel Dworkin
On May 18, 1944, Mr. and Mrs. John Wronkoski were elated to become new members of an exclusive club which met monthly at the German Evangelical Church under the auspices of the America Red Cross. Their son, Lt. Edward Wronkoski, had been shot down over North Africa and been reported missing on March 29th. They were understandably relieved to learn, nearly 2 months later, that he was alive and well in a German prisoner of war camp. The parents and wives of the Red Cross’s POW kin support group welcomed them with open arms. (READ MORE)

In Dickinson 1x05, things got real—real in the manner of a bomb exploding in the midst of one’s life.
I do appreciate the series’s uncanny ability to answer the questions I raise in a previous episode (the publication of Emily’s poem in the college literary magazine, in this case), as well as unexpectedly turn things completely on their heads!
I misjudged the urgency of George’s pursuit, for one. By forcing the question, he placed the bomb. Likewise Emily, by forcing the issue of Henry playing Othello, lit the fuse, and all that was left was for time to quickly tick by and blow up Emily and George’s friendship…and the entire Shakespeare club. (Speaking of forcing…what’s up with Sue’s sketchy boss? 😳)
I appreciated the interplay between all of the characters. Emily and Austin, the younger generation, more Radical than their father. George, with Southern relatives—and a comment about Thanksgiving dinner that remains relevant still today—a milquetoast moderate, like Edward (who I presume comes to his position via lived experience that the younger generation lacked, rather than a particular sympathy for slave-owning kin). (As an aside, the racial and social—yet all political—undertones of this episode really shined, more clearly and strongly than any previous episode, and held a mirror to our current world. The Fugitive Slave Act may as well be any of a number of vigilante-style laws passed of late in (mostly) former Confederate states over abortion and migrants/asylum seekers, for one.)
Though George and Edward are aligned on appeasement of the southern states, they are not aligned on George’s encouragement of Emily’s “wilder notions”—the irony of which, I fear, was not lost on Mrs Dickinson. (In terms of dishing cruelty, Edward wins this time around, musing in front of his daughter and his wife that he would prefer the life of a spinster to that of a wife, for the greater freedom the former offered, at once slighting his wife and also further encouraging Emily’s “wilder notions.” Edward’s complex relationship with his daughter remains fascinating; why does he fear, as his wife alludes, to let his daughter go? There’s also an interesting parallel between the historical Mrs Dickinson, whom Edward courted quite strongly, but who, while fond of Edward to some degree, seemed only to resignedly accept his proposal, and her daughter Emily and her pursuit by George—the key difference being that Emily fille has so far held out and refused marriage.)
I appreciated the way that Emily and Austin (so far, or at the moment, at least) do not seem to be letting their love triangle with Sue come between them—mild jealousy over the amount of correspondence, yes, but Austin either backed up Emily or avoided siding against her on the major questions of the episode, and Emily bent her “only women should portray women to make up for past exclusion” rule to let Austin play Desdemona. And though Sue has written Austin back twice compared to Emily zero, I believe we are to see that it is Emily’s letters she longs to receive. (And, again, there’s that sketchy boss 😳)
The pinnacle of the hour belongs to Henry, as he—under peril of being wrongfully seized by fugitive slave hunters—reminds Emily—and us—that sitting in the comfort of our homes, eating cake and reading Shakespeare (or watching it) while decrying the evils and injustices of the way the world is—“the world shouldn’t be like this”—is a privilege those living in the world, and feeling those injustices as boot pressing on their backs, do not have.
(Emily was right, though, that Othello could only be properly comprehended when one who understood his life portrayed him. Henry was masterful, and yet…)
The underlying theme of the episode, the thread tying everything together, was that of being seen. As Emily so harshly reminds George, he does’t know her, he doesn’t listen to her, he doesn’t see her as who she is (instead of his fantasy)…which is followed up, masterfully, by Henry’s comments to Emily, in kinder, gentler language, reminding her that she does not see him, at least not fully, and the perils he lives under every single day. (One might also make an argument that Emily doesn’t see George and the depth of his love for her; it’s hard to tell exactly how much is her not seeing him vs him not seeing her.) Edward doesn’t see Mrs Dickinson, as his “spinster vs wife” comments in front of her make cruelly clear. In a comic-relief-but-truly-sad way, Lavinia reminds us that she is not seen by her family, either, when Emily laughs down the suggestion of reading The Taming of the Shrew; who would want to read a play about a long-suffering younger sister who cannot marry until her not-at-all-eager older sister does? Even Austin’s insistence on playing Desdemona reminds us that no one sees his love for Sue. And Sue, well, Sue is in Boston being a governess to a very sketchy man’s children because her best friend/lover and her fiancé/older brother of her best friend can’t see her in their battle over her affections
This feels like the strongest episode so far, and hopefully a sign of things to come. (Also, apparently, this post is a sign of how much my academic brain has been longing for action 😂)

Books: Zilch, zero. I’m thinking I may only read 1 or 2 books, maybe fewer, depending on the time. I just have not found the time or energy to read a book after all of the other media I’m consuming!
Awards!
Best TV show: I Love Lucy, Honorable Mention: Tales of Tomorrow
Best Radio show: The Big Show, Honorable Mentions: Mr. and Mrs. North and Screen Guild Theater
Best Song: "Comes-a-Long-a-Love," by Kay Starr. This is still a f--kin' banger, and I love it!
Best Film: Singin’ in the Rain, Honorable Mentions: 5 Fingers and Phone Call from a Stranger
Best Magazine: Life Magazine
Worst Film: Island of Desire, Honorable Mention: Red Planet Mars
Worst TV: Well, I haven’t seen any really bad shows. But as far as my tastes go? Least favorites would be Cicso Kid and Howdy Doody!
Worst Radio: Again, least favorites would be Martin and Lewis and Gunsmoke. Both aren't bad, they just aren’t to my taste.
Surprises and Trends
Biggest surprises about specific shows/episodes:
Betty Furness. Who would have thought I would develop a crush on a pitch-lady. And I honestly don’t understand it! I just love her.
Tales of Tomorrow. I didn’t know a show like this existed before the Twilight Zone!
I've actually really been enjoying the show Father Knows Best. It was not something I thought I’d be interested in at all, but it is quite a well written show. It also has lots of fun 50s slang via the teenagers in the house!
Olsen and Johnson! They are insane and I love them!
Biggest overall surprises/trends:
Early TV is not nearly as rudimentary and rough as I expected. There are many well written shows that are very enjoyable to watch. I’m guessing much of this is due to the fact that radio shows were a highly developed art in their own way by then, and most TV shows were either titles that came directly from radio or concepts for shows that radio had already created. The template for sit-coms, variety shows, detective shows, westerns, game shows and panel shows was already well developed.
I thought widescreen film had been adapted in 1952, but everything is still the standard 1.375:1 ratio.
The East Asian racism in media. It’s not surprising that it was there, but it has been shocking how ubiquitous and overt it is. It is more overt than any other kind of racism in the media so far.
Just how bad the way men talked to women was. Their constant unprovoked comments about how a woman looks, their pressure to tell a woman she means yes when she says no, just in general the way it was so socially accepted. Like number 3 on the list, it was not surprising it was there, just how ubiquitous it was.
There were some non-mainstream ideas expressed in mainstream media. It’s fairly rare, but I was especially impressed with Edward R. Murrow calling out prejudice against a Chinese family in San Francisco housing, and Collier’s cover story telling everyone to calm the fuck down over the hysteria of “juvenile delinquency.”
The very casual use of firing guns. I’m not referring to gangster films or westerns, but in comedy shows and other shows where you wouldn’t expect a gun. There’s a general feeling in the air of guns not being all that dangerous, or even that it isn’t dangerous to give anyone a gun. Even kids- there are thousands of toy guns for example. Now, they were not experiencing an epidemic of mass shootings, and their guns back then were pistols, rifles, and shotguns, not semi-automatic weapons of war.
Often the strongest female roles have been in Westerns! Dale Evans in The Roy Rogers Show, Marlene Dietrich in Rancho Notorious, and all the women in Outlaw Women... Westerns tend to be the ones with the strongest women who can stand on their own.
There has been no hint of gayness anywhere. Not even a “sissy” comedic role or a suspiciously masculine woman. There have been some goofy sidekicks who are a little effeminate (like Pat on Roy Rogers), and the ass-whooping women like Dora of Outlaw Women, but there has never been any noticeable subtext going on. So far, 1939 had more of this than 1952!
There are lots of affectionate uses of accents from European immigrants who are not native English speakers. A lot of comedies feature people with Germanic, Scandanavian, or Italian accents, especially. French and Spanish accents are more often used for romantic characters. But I assume the higher level of accents is due to the fact that culturally there were more European immigrants in the U.S. at the time. Now most immigrants are from South and Central America or India and East Asia. Sadly, most Americans don’t view these accents with affection or gentle comedy.
I did not expect cigarette companies to have doctors in their ads or overtly say their product is “completely save for use in the mouth.” I expected them to dance more delicately around the issue for legal reasons. Chesterfield’s ads and Camel’s ads are especially bad at this.
People ate a lot of mayonnaise then! It seems everything is served with mayonnaise!
Evaporated milk also seems to be used much more commonly. Now we tend to only use it in baking, but then people used it in coffee, gave it to babies like formula, or even drank it diluted as regular milk.
Least surprising thing? I’m absolutely having a ball doing this! Sixty-one more days is a little overwhelming, but I’m excited and up for the challenge!

Guideline 4
If it sounds like the name of a pool hustler (Natural Fats), it’s probably good for you, within reason. If it smacks of sadomasochism (Whipped Spread), it’s not.
Guideline 5
Save room for pie. Pie being the highest form of food. When we say “sweet as an angel eating pie.” We do not mean icky; we mean sublime. Eudora Welty, in her story “Kin,” celebrates the perfect ending to a pleasant day: “wonderful black, bitter, moist chocolate pie under mountains of meringue.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, according to his friend James B. Thayer, loved pie so much he ate it regularly for breakfast. One morning, Emerson offered several gentleman guests, one after another, a piece of pie. Each gentleman declined.” ‘But . . . , ‘ Mr. Emerson remonstrated, . . . Thrusting the knife under a piece of the pie, and putting the entire weight of his character into his manner, ‘but . . . what is pie for?’”
There. There you are. That rhetorical question, extended across a broad spectrum of good food, is the answer to Why I Eat. Was breakfast pie bad for Emerson? In only slightly premature old age, the author of “Self-Reliance” began losing his memory, but by all accounts he retained a nice smile. “He suffered very little,” according to his son Edward Waldo, “took his nourishment well, went to his study and tried to work, accomplished less and less, but did not notice it.” More and more, I think of this as my fallback ambition. But it might Emerson’s golden years have been even mellower if he had saved room for pie?
