Low key very tired of people responding to veilguard criticism with something along the lines of “lol these people have no media literacy, didn’t you understand what the game was telling you??” Yes, yes I understand what the game was trying to tell me. That doesn’t mean I have to like it or the way the writers went about it.

Also the whole argument of “well, the dragon age fandom proved they couldn’t handle xyz controversial character/element of the story so that’s why veilguard had very little references to those things” kinda grinds my gears a bit. I don’t think it can be proven with 100% certainty what writing decisions were made based on past fandom reactions to the other games, but I do think it would be an incredibly shitty move to simplify or remove complexity from a story just because there might be a portion of the audience who doesn’t get it. “The fandom couldn’t even handle Vivienne” Yeah a good amount of people dismissed her as a selfish snooty bitch, but I didn’t and a lot of other people didn’t and to remove complex and interesting characters like her on the basis that enough people “won’t get it” just feels like a disservice to all of us.

I get that video games are products and for a product to sell more it’s gotta have mass appeal #and to have mass appeal it’s gotta cater to a wider audience #so yeah maybe simplifying things and removing controversy is good for the bottom line #but as an appreciator of art and good storytelling it just wounds my soul a bit lmao #also even if you’re afraid your audience won’t get something #wouldn’t it be better to present the more complex versions of things on the off chance some people grow and learn from it??#maybe some people will encounter something that makes them uncomfy #and if you give them a chance to just SIT. A little 15 min doodle but first post of the year has to be Bingqiu!

#ok its time to get mushy in the tags because I doubt anyone would read them too closely #I’ve had severe art block for YEARS before I got into danmei in 2024 #and it wasn’t that my skill was gone it’s just that I thought nothing I did was good enough #I started reading danmei around the summer of last year and I got SO INSPIRED #I dived into the fandom side of things (I haven’t been in a live fandom in years) and was so excited about all the art people were making #and writing! and music! and animatics!#everything was so bright and colorful and beautiful #and everyone had such cool designs for these book characters that I’d grown to love #so I took a chance and doodled a little Luo Binghe and posted him on here #and I was so taken aback by how welcoming and sweet the fandom was #it made me wanna keep taking chances and posting my art— because I think that’s one of the hardest things I’ve come to accept #that even if it’s not good enough for me #someone else may enjoy it #and ain’t it crazy that ive come to enjoy drawing again too #sure the interaction has been fun but it’s been even more fun experimenting with my style and experimenting with colors and rendering #and grayscale and angles #and composition and expressions #ahh!! art is so fun!! #i'm coming up with a little self-indulgent story :3 #Where this woman‚ Palmer‚ was brought to the Land Of The Dead by mistake after a relative's passing #Death's Assistant rescued her from losing contact with her dimension by bringing her to the Limbo‚ an intermediary between the two worlds #Her main goal was to return home‚ until local conflicts and unexpected meetings with previously assumed imaginary friends #led her to question the real reason to be there ---#It feels right to create stories for these characters :o #and not just leave them hanging in an empty blank space (which is a constant pattern in most backgrounds of my art)#there are also other characters that show up but I haven't thought of their role yet #and I really like this idea of simplistic designs changing over time (10+ bonus points if it follows character development)#while really complex ones usually remain the same #so ig there's more to come??? unless I come up with yet ANOTHER self-indulgent story lmao #sbahdabwhdbahdhwqbadnwanwsm #starbsart
