The important thing is moral choice. Evil has to exist along with good in order that moral choice may operate. Life is sustained by the grinding opposition of moral entities.

Romans 1:18-2:16
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.
Therefore you have no excuse, you foolish person, everyone of you who passes judgment; for in that matter in which you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, you foolish person who passes judgment on those who practice such things, and yet does them as well, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and restraint and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will repay each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He will give eternal life; but to those who are self-serving and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, He will give wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of mankind who does evil, for the Jew first and also for the Greek, but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.
For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the Law who will be justified. For when Gentiles who do not have the Law instinctively perform the requirements of the Law, these, though not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of mankind through Christ Jesus.

If God should really speak to man, man could still never know that it was God speaking. It is quite impossible for man to apprehend the infinite by his senses, distinguish it from sensible beings, and recognize it as such. But in some cases man can be sure the voice he hears is not God’s. For if the voice commands him to do something contrary to moral law, then no matter how majestic the apparition may be, and no matter how it may seem to surpass the whole of nature, he must consider it an illusion.

1689 Confession
Chapter 19 - Of the Law of God
1. God gave to Adam a law of universal obedience written in his heart, and a particular precept of not eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil; by which He bound him and all his posterity to personal, entire, exact, and perpetual obedience; promised life upon the fulfilling, and threatened death upon the breach of it, and endued him with power and ability to keep it.
Genesis 1:27; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Romans 10:5; Galatians 3:10,12.
2. The same law that was first written in the heart of man continued to be a perfect rule of righteousness after the fall, and was delivered by God upon Mount Sinai, in ten commandments, and written in two tables, the four first containing our duty towards God, and the other six, our duty to man.
Deuteronomy 10:4; Romans 2:14,15.
3. Besides this law, commonly called moral, God was pleased to give to the people of Israel ceremonial laws, containing several typical ordinances, partly of worship, prefiguring Christ, His graces, actions, sufferings, and benefits; and partly holding forth divers instructions of moral duties, all which ceremonial laws being appointed only to the time of reformation, are, by Jesus Christ the true Messiah and only law-giver, who was furnished with power from the Father for that end abrogated and taken away.
1 Corinthians 5:7; Ephesians 2:14,16; Colossians 2:14,16,17; Hebrews 10:1.
4. To them also He gave sundry judicial laws, which expired together with the state of that people, not obliging any now by virtue of that institution; their general equity only being of moral use.
1 Corinthians 9:8-10.
5. The moral law doth for ever bind all, as well justified persons as others, to the obedience thereof, and that not only in regard of the matter contained in it, but also in respect of the authority of God the Creator, who gave it; neither doth Christ in the Gospel any way dissolve, but much strengthen this obligation.
Matthew 5:17-19; Romans 3:31; Romans 13:8-10; James 2:8,10-12.
6. Although true believers be not under the law as a covenant of works, to be thereby justified or condemned, yet it is of great use to them as well as to others, in that as a rule of life, informing them of the will of God and their duty, it directs and binds them to walk accordingly; discovering also the sinful pollutions of their natures, hearts, and lives, so as examining themselves thereby, they may come to further conviction of, humiliation for, and hatred against, sin; together with a clearer sight of the need they have of Christ and the perfection of His obedience; it is likewise of use to the regenerate to restrain their corruptions, in that it forbids sin; and the threatenings of it serve to shew what even their sins deserve, and what afflictions in this life they may expect for them, although freed from the curse and unallayed rigour thereof. The promises of it likewise shew them God’s approbation of obedience, and what blessings they may expect upon the performance thereof, though not as due to them by the law as a covenant of works; so as man’s doing good and refraining from evil, because the law encourageth to the one and deterreth from the other, is no evidence of his being under the law and not under grace.
Romans 3:20; Romans 6:12-14; Romans 7:7; Romans 8:1; Romans 10:4; Galatians 2:16; 1 Peter 3:8-13.
7. Neither are the aforementioned uses of the law contrary to the grace of the Gospel, but do sweetly comply with it, the Spirit of Christ subduing and enabling the will of man to do that freely and cheerfully which the will of God, revealed in the law, requireth to be done.
Ezekiel 36:27; Galatians 3:21.

DM#13: Submission to Authorities
Doctrine of the Mysteries #13 Submission to authorities It can be amusing (and sad) to read the reactions of people when you tell them that, as grace believers, we are not under the law, but under grace. Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. The reactions can vary from being called blasphemous, to a show of ignorance by people who…

Practical Laws For Real Life
1 “Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s,…

One of the funniest interactions in the Silmarillion for me tbh is when Curufin decides not to kill Eöl. I mean, it appears he doesn’t have much of an issue with murder and it probably would have been better in the long run for him to have killed Eöl but instead he’s like “by the laws of the Eldar I may not slay you at this time”. As opposed to some later date??? And also the same laws you broke in Alqualondë??? It’s just so funny to me. And the way it plays out in my head here is really more like:
Curufin: bitch get off my lawn I’m already in trouble with Maedhros and if I kill someone again I’ll never hear the end of it. Every minute you stay here is a threat to the both of us.
#I mean in all fairness there probably weren’t laws against kinslaying before Alqualondë#anjdjsjsjaja did they all just sit down and were like yeah maybe not a good idea should we put that into law somewhere?#I mean no one thought something like murder would happen there probably weren’t Eldarin laws just Valar moral no nos#curufin#eöl#silmarillion#tolkien#the silmarillion#feanorians#silm#tolkien legendarium#my post

my favourite thing about hannibal as a character is that he operates on fey rules. here is a creature who wants to eat you. open his mouth and you will find lacefine rows of needle-sharp teeth. he’s a ghoulish, antler-clad thing that wears human skin and dances to our tunes.
and i think you know on some level, facing him, that he wants to eat you, so aware of his appetite. but, if you follow his rules, his hospitality; if you are polite and interesting and if you say all the right things… you’re suddenly a precious thing to him. and his love is terrible, but if you have it he will do everything but eat you.
he’ll lather you in blood, he’ll drop his soul-stealing morsels into your mouth. he might even grant you a wish.
#that’s the horror of him#he’s a fey creature only bluntly forestalled by laws and morality#but BOUND inextricably by the laws of beauty#he wants things to be beautiful and would never sully a beautiful thing (you) with rudeness#and that’s why he’s terrifying!#hannibal#nbc hannibal
