Church notes - 30th April 2023
30th John 18:26 - 29
1 John 5:1 - 5
'To believe in Christ is to believe in His deity, in the power of His death to cleanse us from all sin and to avert the righteous wrath of a Holy Lord. It means that we believe that the love of God is expressed in the fullest measure by the Cross of Christ and that eternal life is experienced only by a faith union with Him, which is the product of His grace, appropriated by faith' Evan Forman
vs 1 -3 Faith is expressed in love. Love - For example -- Choosing not to bear false witness.
Obedience - Evidence of love Psalm 108:8
Jonah disobeyed God, but the wind and waves and the fish didn't.
Commmands being implemented in a legalistic way is burdensome and crushing.
Matthew 11:28 - 30
Victory Overthrowing the world.
vs 4, 5
Jesus at the Cross - Victory over sin, the Devil and the world. We need to stand in that place.
We need to live out the victory.
Galatians 2:20
Jesus has achieved the victory for us. In Christ we are victorius.

Intersection of ‘being’ and ‘doing’
“Grace shows up in all of us asking the hard questions to break new ground. Grace is generous and, when we lean into it, we can’t help but extend it to others.”[1] Benbow goes on to explore what it looks like to see through the lens of grace to recognise the brokenness of others and self. Session, quoting Stacy, a stripper, “This is the first time I’ve ever felt seen.”[2] in a sermon from 2020…

God’s Love Can’t Be Earned
17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live…

The Morning Devotional: WCF 19.6 (Part One)
The Morning Devotional for June 28, 2023 The Westminster Confession of Faith 19.6 (Part One) VI. Although true believers be not under the law as a covenant of works, to be thereby justified or condemned;a yet is it of great use to them, as well as to others; in that, as a rule of life, informing them of the will of God and their duty, it directs and binds them to walk accordingly;b discovering…

So I know that for months, since the promo images started releasing, we all have been comparing Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius in Gladiator II to the sculpture The Dying Gaul (or The Dying Gladiator).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the first post I saw pointing this out was this one from @quicksilvermad, though I know there have been others.
The resemblance is uncanny. BUT. The header of the Gladiator II article from Entertainment Weekly that released today features Paul Mescal in this pose...
Tumblr media
It. Is. Identical.
The platform, the sword, everything about Paul's pose - all of it is exactly the same as The Dying Gaul.
Is this more than just a really cool, really apt artistic reference on the part of the photoshoot directors? Is this telling us something about the outcome of the film? Do I need to be worried about Lucius making it out alive the same way I am worried about Acacius?
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?????

Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing (Galatians 2:1-10)
"Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing." Seneca
Fourteen years after that first visit, Barnabas and I went up to Jerusalem and took Titus with us. I went to clarify with them what had been revealed to me. At that time I placed before them exactly what I was preaching to the non-Jews. I did this in private with the leaders, those held in esteem by the church, so that our concern would not become a controversial public issue, marred by ethnic…

Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT). “Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.”
2 Peter 1:21 (GW). “No prophecy ever originated from humans. Instead, it was given by the Holy Spirit as humans spoke under God’s direction.”
Galatians 4:4-5 (GNT). “But when the right time finally came, God sent his own Son. He came as the son of a human mother and lived under the Jewish Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might become God's children.”
“The God Who Speaks” By In Touch Ministries:
“God offers us the invaluable privilege of personal communication with Him.”
“Throughout human history, God has spoken to mankind in various ways. His prophets and apostles were moved by the Holy Spirit to proclaim and write His words (2 Peter 1:21), but His ultimate expression came through the birth of His Son Jesus (Galatians 4:3-5). Through the Holy Spirit, the Lord still communicates to every Christian who listens with an open and receptive heart.
Think about the wonder of having a God who speaks—not a distant deity who gives orders from heaven, but one who actually wants to converse with you! Why would the Lord of all creation choose to come to earth, die on a cross, and provide the Holy Spirit in order to communicate with each of us? Consider that God...
Loves you.
Desires an intimate relationship with you.
Longs for you to trust Him and for your faith to grow strong as you see the fulfillment of His words.
Wants you to experience all He’s planned for your life—and will guide you to fulfill His purposes.
In the busyness of the Christmas season, it’s easy to take for granted this invaluable privilege of communication with the Lord. Take time this week away from distractions so you can listen to the God who wants to talk with you.”

By Faith Alone
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that…

"THAT CONTAINER IS LYING ABOUT ITS CONTENTS"
Matthew 7:15, “Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you LOOKING LIKE SHEEP on the OUTSIDE, but on the INSIDE they are really like wild WOLVES.” (GNT) My two favorite seasons are Winter and Fall! Winter, because I love Christmas, snow, carols, decorations and the like. And Fall, because I love the colors, Thanksgiving, the start of the scent of fireplaces, but most of all,…
