What are your thoughts on Mai and Izumi?
I have known Michi's daughter since her earliest childhood, ever since Zhao had the idea that having our children compete in baby races was the best way for them to start developing their skills. Michi almost always won, because she had the most efficient baby. Sometimes Zhao won, because he had seven babies to participate with. I always lost, because I only had Zuko and Zuko was more interested in chasing the turtleducks than developing his skills. And when I finally had a baby I could win with, Zhao and Michi's babies were already able to walk.
I always had the impression that Mai had inherited her mother's efficiency, though she was evidently even more serious. I cannot think of a time when she was anything but a perfect Fire Nation citizen (except when she betrayed Azula, but that was Zuko's fault for brainwashing her). Azula's other playmate, Ty Lemon, was prone to spontaneous crying and tantrums, and was always trying to get people's attention with her bad jokes (why Azula wanted to spend time with her was a complete mystery). But Mai was completely different. She was composed and elegant, and when she started throwing knives she became the second most popular girl in the court after Azula.
It was always evident that she also harbored romantic feelings for Zuko. I never knew exactly why until Azula told me the story a few years ago. It turns out that when they were kids, Zuko had the brilliant idea of hitting her on the head to cause her brain damage and convince her to be his girlfriend. So after making up some excuse about a shuriken and an apple, at ten years old Zuko pushed her into the fountain and Mai hit her head. 'Hahaha now you will be my girlfriend and I will use your talents to further my ambitions,' said Zuko, in front of Azula. 'Oh Agni, I'm head over heels in love with you now,' replied Mai.
And that was how Zuko got a girl who was totally out of his league. I almost could not believe it when Azula told me what happened. Zuko had had a brilliant idea. I even thought about doing the same with Ursa, but I didn't have time, because soon after Iroh decided that his whims were above common sense and Lu Ten died in a stupid attack that anyone with half a brain could have prevented. I wanted to make plans to arrange a future marriage between Zuko and Mai, in the hope that she would teach him to be more useful, before she inevitably recovered from her head injury.
Unfortunately Zuko did too good a job brainwashing her, because she was still in love with him even after Zuko broke up with her with a letter to join the Avatar's paramilitary terrorist group. Why didn't he think of taking her with him? What was he thinking? The young lady is a human weapon. That boy can't even plan a coup properly. And as a result, she became a traitor and Azula had no choice but to lock her away until she regained her senses.
But now Zuko is Firelord, and you would think he would finally do the smart thing and marry her, right? Well, no, because the girl finally healed from her head injury and left him. Good for her.
And I don't know who Izumi is, but I guess she's the daughter Zuko will have with her in the future if by some miracle he convinces Mai to give him another chance. Only Zuko would name a baby 'Fountain'.
#Zuko is a lost cause but with a wife smarter than him we might have a future#Someone who banishes Zuko's economy minister#Even Ty Lemon would do a better job than the 13 year old earthbender#Last thing she did was to declare wrestling our new national sport now that Zuko banned agni kais#We are doomed#ask ozai#Maiko#Mai#Zuko#Ozai#Michi#Zhao#atla#avatar the last airbender

On February 3rd, 1960, British (Conservative) Prime Minister Harold Macmillan addressed the South African parliament in Cape Town, using the iconic phrase ‘wind of change’, that was blowing through the African continent as majority black nations moved toward decolonialisation and independence. He described this ‘growth of national consciousness’ as a political fact, whether welcome or not, and talked about the creation of a society which respects the rights of individuals;
"…A society in which individual merit, and individual merit alone, is the criterion for a man’s advancement, whether political or economic…"
Given the regime of Apartheid in South Africa at that time, it’s unsurprising that the speech received a frosty reception, although the South African Prime Minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, at least remained courteous, but argued;
"…We are the people who brought civilisation to Africa. To do justice in Africa means not only being just to the black man of Africa, but also to the white man of Africa…"
The BBC reported;
"…Mr Macmillan’s speech is the first time a senior international figure has given voice to the growing protest against South Africa’s laws of strict racial segregation. The speech was widely anticipated throughout the country, as Mr Macmillan had already said he would take the chance to say what he thought about the situation in South Africa. Even so, the plain-speaking nature of the speech took many in Cape Town by surprise…"
Harold Macmillan’s courageous speech was widely credited in expediting independence across Africa. It was also influential toward encouraging a more vocal opposition to Apartheid internationally, and by 1962, the UN had passed a non-binding resolution calling for an international trade and cultural boycott of South Africa.
The British government's resolve in terms of isolating South Africa proved to be a little fluid - at the inaugural Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in 1971, the Heath government mightily annoyed African member states over proposed arms sales to South Africa in defiance of a voluntary UN embargo.
The sporting boycott was credited as being a major factor driving reform in South Africa, however this was lost on a number of professional cricketers who participated in highly lucrative rebel tours over several years. This is how long time anti Apartheid activist (Lord) Peter Hain described what would be a disastrous tour by a rebel England side, in early 1990, with Apartheid in its very last days;
"…This was on the cusp of a historic change in South Africa. So for Gatting and his tourists to go, clodhoppers and all, into this transformative moment was grotesque beyond belief. It was not surprising it caused such offence. The rebel tours were a doomed attempt to shore up the tottering apartheid system, when it needed to be isolated…"
More on rebel tours by Australia and England;
Literature circulating in South Africa during an earlier Australian rebel tour, stated;
"...The 8 million Rand that will be paid to 15 well nourished but greedy cricketers can buy bread for each and every day of an entire year for 250 000 South Africans – enough to save a quarter million from dying..."

For those that aren't in Australia right now, we have the funniest scandal going on.
Firstly let us introduce you to the eye of the storm: Sam Kerr. Sam is a women's soccer player who has in the last year become one of the most famous and beloved athletes in Australia. Captain of the women's national team, Sam became something of a cult figure after the last Women's Soccer World Cup became a complete unpredicted sensation in Australia, with the whole country getting behind the team.
Sam, up until now, has had probably one of the most squeaky clean images in sport. Generally in Australia it is not uncommon for our sports stars to be caught up in scandals involving drugs:
violence:
drinking their own urine:
or if you're cricket legend Shane Warne, probably all three at once.
Contrasting all this, Sam's image as the squeaky clean saviour for sport made it all the more shocking this last week, when it was announced that Kerr was to face trial after having been charged by the UK police of a "racially aggravated offence" involving a taxi driver.
This was shocking news. Nobody knew what to make of it. Sam was a model for young girls everywhere and a national treasure. "This is why we can't have nice things" screamed the nation. It seemed like all hope was lost.
That is, until, yesterday, when the UK police finally revealed the full details of the case, in which Sam Kerr, sporting legend, was arrested for vomiting in a cab, and then telling an intervening police officer that he was a “stupid white bastard”.
Now we probably don't need to point out that in Australia, vomiting in a taxi and then calling a cop a bastard is about as close to a national culture as we have.
You could not have come up with a better headline to make someone a national hero.
Needless to say, Sam in now being hailed down under as the greatest legend that ever lived, and a petition has already been started to have her picture added to the $5 note.
The tide has swung so far that not one, but TWO, state Premiers have spoken out in support of Kerr, and the Prime Minister has even gone on the record describing her as "a delight".
And so ends the racial abuse saga of our greatest sports hero of all time, and the very first reverse milkshake duck to ever exist.

India Takes First Step Towards Hosting 2036 Olympics, Sends Letter of Intent
India has officially entered the race to host the 2036 Olympic Games, marking the beginning of a long and intricate journey towards potentially becoming the fourth Asian country to host the prestigious event. On October 1, 2024, the Indian government submitted a formal Letter of Intent (LoI) to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), signaling its ambition to bring the Olympic Games to Indian shores. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public endorsement of the bid during the opening ceremony of the 141st IOC session in Mumbai in 2023, where he expressed India's desire to host the 2036 edition of the Games.
India's Olympic Aspirations
India's bid for the 2036 Olympics aligns with the country’s ongoing efforts to increase its global presence in sports. Hosting the Games would elevate India's position on the world stage and leave a lasting legacy in the country's sporting infrastructure. If successful, India would join China, South Korea, and Japan as the fourth Asian nation to host the Summer Olympics.
The Indian bid stands out for its potential inclusion of traditional Indian sports like yoga, kabaddi, kho-kho, and chess. These sports reflect India’s rich cultural heritage and provide an opportunity to showcase the country's diverse sporting landscape at a global level. By integrating indigenous games, India aims to provide a unique touch to the international sporting scene and promote merit-based sports development in the country.
The Road Ahead: A Long Process
However, India's journey towards securing the 2036 Olympics is far from straightforward. The submission of the Letter of Intent is only the first step in what is likely to be a multi-year process, with no fixed deadlines for when a final decision will be made. The IOC's Future Hosts Commission (FHC) is responsible for assessing bids from cities and countries, ensuring they meet specific criteria related to infrastructure, security, accommodation, and public services. Only after thorough discussions and assessments will the final list of potential host cities be considered.
India’s bid will face stiff competition from other countries already confirmed to be in the race, including Chile, with Santiago as its proposed venue, and Turkey, which plans to host the Games in Istanbul. Additionally, countries like Indonesia (with Jakarta, Bali, and the under-construction Nusantara city) and cash-rich nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have also been in talks with the IOC about potentially submitting bids.
Challenges Ahead
India’s bid faces several challenges, including internal divisions within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The IOA remains the official body for communicating with the IOC, and any fractured leadership within the association could hamper India's efforts to present a unified bid. For the bid to succeed, the IOA must overcome its internal struggles and cooperate effectively with both the government and the IOC.
Moreover, India’s infrastructure and facilities will come under scrutiny. While the country has made significant progress in recent years with world-class sports venues, there is still a need for further development to meet the demands of hosting the Olympics. The Indian government has pledged to invest in the required infrastructure, but the long-term nature of this development means that it will require sustained commitment and careful planning.
The Significance of Hosting the 2036 Olympics
The potential to host the 2036 Olympics is monumental for India. The Games would act as a catalyst for sports development in the country, increase international tourism, and promote India's soft power on the global stage. Moreover, it would give a much-needed boost to India's sporting culture, encouraging youth participation in athletics and other competitive sports.
In addition, hosting the Olympics would provide a significant economic boost through job creation, investments, and increased demand for goods and services. The government’s focus on strengthening India's sports infrastructure is expected to have long-lasting benefits for various sports disciplines, including athletics, swimming, and team sports, making the country a more competitive force in international competitions.
The Path to Success
While India faces stiff competition for the 2036 Olympics, the government’s commitment to the bid is clear. The formal submission of the Letter of Intent is a significant step towards realizing this dream. However, India must work together as a nation, overcoming internal hurdles, to present a united front. The international community will closely monitor India’s preparations, and the country's potential to host the Games will largely depend on how well it can meet the IOC's stringent criteria.
The next phase of India’s Olympic bid will involve careful planning and coordination with the IOC. A thorough evaluation will take place before a final decision is made, and a host city will be selected. If successful, India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics will be a turning point in the country's sporting history, inspiring a new generation of athletes and solidifying India’s place on the global sporting map.
Conclusion
India's step towards hosting the 2036 Olympics is a bold and ambitious one, marking the nation's growing presence in the international sporting arena. While the path to securing the Games is filled with challenges, India's commitment to enhancing its sports infrastructure and the government’s backing are encouraging signs of its resolve. If successful, India’s bid will not only transform its sports landscape but also leave an indelible mark on the global stage, inspiring future generations of athletes and fostering greater cultural exchange.
