Once in Sydney, after a disastrous few months on display where crowds failed to flock to the shuttle exhibition featuring such compelling educational offerings as "activities is to assist in the development of issues of nutrition and hygiene at home" (an actual quote from their website) - the leasing company declared bankruptcy and washed their hands of the space shuttle completely.

One of four people listed on the lease, described as a business partner of the Prime Minister, also claims he never knew he was a director of the company, which went on to cause a lot more problems.

Eventually the decision was made to abandon the once $1 billion Soviet pride and joy in a Sydney carpark, where it resided for a year under a small tarpaulin.

Failed attempts to be rid of the shuttle included a 12 day auction hosted by an LA radio station, where listeners were offered the chance to buy the shuttle for $6 million, however all bids turned out to be pranks and the shuttle remained.

Multiple attempts were also made to sell the shuttle to Tom Cruise, with the exacerbated movie star's representatives repeatedly telling the insistent traders that he was not interested in owning a Russian spaceship.

Eventually a Singaporean group dismantled the shuttle and shipped it overseas, however Russian authorities soon reported they once again had been failed to be paid for the lease. Singaporean representatives responded that they definitely had paid for the shuttle, and that they simply couldn't remember when or how much was paid.

Representing the Russian government, Lawyer Suhaila Turani told the Wall Street Journal “I feel sorry for the Russians. They’re good in space, but they’re very naive in business.”

For a time the shuttle was abandoned in the storage yard of event company Pico, with the company owner telling the Wall Street Journal "I just want this thing out of my life" after three years of being stuck with it.

A few years later the shuttle was found by German journalists dismantled in a junkyard, and it was then bought and shipped to Germany to be put on display a museum, so all's well that ends well (except they dropped it from a crane while trying to set it up, but it polished up okay).

all the lights in seoul went out. although the girl had not yet fallen asleep completely, the shock after the blackout had awakened her. once she understood what was happening she might have gone back to sleep if something hadn't abruptly crashed into the door and then slammed it open, without her even getting out of bed. from the dark house, serim emerged holding her phone that had the flashlight on and once inside the room she aggressively kicked the door to close it.

"what are you doing…?" karina whispered.

before she could hear her, serim made an olympic leap towards the bed where the blackhaired woman was resting and, ignoring the complaints and pushes that she gave her to get out of her bed, she managed to hide under the sheets. they both fell silent and then only serim's heavy breathing could be heard.

"what's going on?" the youngest asked stoically.

“what's going on, karina? there was a blackout." she said obviously.

“yes, serim, i can notice that, but why are you in my bed?” she spoke into the air since jang was completely covered.

“promise me you won’t laugh.” she asked.

“i won't laugh." she assured, already trying to hold back her laughter.

from beneath her, in the part of her body that was underneath the blanket, she felt serim poke her abdomen with her little finger. karina tried to stop her, but she continued until she understood what she wanted and put her hand under the coverlet, with her pinky extended, and she intertwined it with serim's, sealing her promise.

“i am very afraid of the dark.” she admitted. “since i was little, i could never get over it.” she sounded upset, like she was having trouble breathing. “i hate to thank you, but luckily you're here because i don't know what i would have done if i was alone during the blackout.”

“are you still afraid of the dark?”

"do not judge me!"

"i'm not!"

serim began to poke the contrary's abdomen repeatedly and quickly to annoy her, to which karina tried to get away from her and catch her hands to make her cease the action. out of nowhere, a loud crash was heard causing serim to let out a sharp scream of terror accompanied by a jump on the mattress, and then move disastrously and frantic trying to cover every small hole that led to the outside, messing up the bed, and approaching karina to cling to her body so that she would save her from whatever the threat was. due to the position in which she had ended up after so much rolling around on the bed, the closest extremity of yu within her reach was her legs, so she hugged one of these tightly.

“serim, serim.” she tried to detach her from her leg without results, so she rested her hands on her back. “it was the neighbor upstairs colliding with a chair, nothing's wrong, don't worry.” she patted her skin, frustrated at having to take care of a 26-year-old. “come, get out of there.”

the youngest took the girl by one of her arms and carefully pulled it upwards, trying to get her out from under the covers, but she resisted, clinging to her body tightly so she could stay there below.

“no, karina, i can’t.” she refused, her voice fragile. “what do i do if the boogeyman is out there in the dark?”

“the only thing out here in the dark is me and the oxygen that is not reaching you right now.” she continued to exert force. “namu, don't worry, i'm here.”

“i don't know if i'm more scared of the boogeyman or you.”

"come here." she finally got the older girl to uncover herself and take her head outside, although now holding on tightly to her shirt. “it's okay, you're scared, i'm not going to do anything bad, don't worry.” she tried to calm her down.

barely seeing her image with the little light that filtered from behind the curtains of the room's large window, yu noticed that her hair was a mess due to all the movement she made before, so, leaving a hand on serim's shoulder, she took the other to fix the locks that were in her face.

“you don't mind me sleeping here, do you?” jang asked weakly, fear and vulnerability impossible to hide.

“five minutes ago i would have told you to leave, but now that i see that you are seriously terrified of the dark, i can't be that mean.” she laughed softly. “what does it say about myself if you choose the boogeyman instead of me?”

“i could make great jokes about you and the boogeyman, but i'm scared so maybe another time.” she said with a sad voice and her lips forming a pout.

the blackhaired found that comment cute, so she couldn't resist a light smile, and giving a caress to the girl's cheek, as if it were a reassuring, friendly pat. she turned her body that was on her side facing serim and lay down on her back, but the oldest didn't move, instead she took advantage of her change of position to wrap herself around her arm and hide her head on her neck.

“namu, you can't sleep so close to me.” she carefully tried to push her body.

“i need to be touching you to know that there is someone and not be afraid.”

she babbled with her face still between karina's shoulder and jaw, moving to circle her torso and hold onto it, lacing her fingers with the fabric of her pajamas that draped over her ribs. by hugging her more securely, the young one could no longer separate her from her, and on the other side, she only felt her getting closer and closer. due to the little space between their bodies, the vocalist's nose constantly rubbed against the other's skin, and this one couldn't help but be distracted by this detail.

“why is your nose cold?” she asked in a low volume.

the girl returned to the previous position she was in, standing on her side, face to face and impossibly nearer to serim, who, due to the motion, remained holding the youngest in her arms, and upon noticing this, she rested her hands on her waist and lower back to press and attract her towards her.

"i have no idea." unlike her voice moments ago when she was scared, now her words came out in a serious deep tone typical of when you just woke up, still in a whisper.

yu held her face gently between her fingertips and moved closer to her, brushing their noses lightly once, taking a second to appreciate the sensation of the recent touch on her skin before lifting her chin again to rub her nose against jang's again and then maintain that contact for a moment, going back and forth slowly and tenderly, until she brought her lips to the opposite tip and left a kiss there.

before separating from her, serim moved towards her to capture her mouth with her own, but karina turned around, lying face up, quickly, avoiding the connection.

"i can't, i have a boyfriend." she remembered, that sentence coming out between labored breaths, as if she had just run.

serim rolled on the mattress, ending up on the opposite end of it, the back of her hand falling on the dancer's chest, keeping contact, she gave a frustrated sigh.

“so, you don't do it because you have a boyfriend,” she reiterated. “not because you don't want to." observed.

"think whatever you want." yu dismissed her, returning to the same sour tone with which she always spoke to her, adjusting her pillow to go to sleep.

“karina." the woman called after a moment of complete silence.

"now what?" tha named one asked tired, she was sleepy.

“can you hold my hand?” she asked shyly.

“namu…”

“it's not romantic at all, it's just that i need to be in contact with you to be reassured that there is someone else and i'm not alone in the darkness.” she explained honestly.

the youngest didn't react, so serim thought that she would not pay attention to her and so began to breathe with difficulty as she became aware of the lack of light again and felt helpless in it, but before she lost her composure she felt the touch of karina on her skin, sliding along it in search of her hand. the oldest made her task easier, tapping on her to make it simpler to find it. yu then wrapped her palm around jang's thumb, holding it steady, bringing calm to serim, and finally helping her fall asleep.

2024 Japanese Nationals Competitor List: The MEN

One of the most, if not the most competitive nationals in the figure skating world, the Japanese Nationals never fails to bring incredible stress every year. WHAT'S AT STAKE? The 2024 Japanese Nationals will decide the assignments for the following skaters: - 2025 World Championships - 2025 Four Continents Championships (4CC) - 2025 World Junior Championships. The National Champion automatically goes to Worlds. The 2025 World Championships will decide how many spots the Japanese Men will have at the 2026 Olympic Games, with 3 maximum spots available. Considering the level of internal competition between the men, they would/should do everything to send a Worlds Team that can keep those spots. Also at stake is the Skater's Development Level (read: receiving financial funding) for the 2025-2026 season: highest placements at Nationals will be listed as Special Development Players, and the placements below them will be listed as Development A and B. But no worries - should a skater receive Grand Prix invitations or qualify for the NHK Trophy host spot in 2025-2026 season, they can be moved up so they can get the funding necessary for travel and entry to attend the GP.

THE SEEDS: 2 SKATERS The silver and bronze medalists of last year's Japanese Nationals, Yuma Kagiyama and Sota Yamamoto received automatic qualification for Japanese Nationals and did not have to compete in the qualifying rounds (Regionals and Sectionals). Yuma is bidding for his first senior National title, having previously won 3 National bronze medals and 1 National silver medal.

EASTERN JAPAN: 9 SKATERS From this region, only Koshiro Shimada has medaled at senior Nationals with his silver in 2022. Kao Miura and Shun Sato are both bidding for their first senior Nationals podium. Kosho Oshima, Nozomu Yoshioka, Ryota Kitamura, Haruto Toda, Ryushin Yamada and Ryusei Kikuchi will also compete.

WESTERN JAPAN: 11 SKATERS From this region, the 2008 National Champion (?!?!?!?!) Nobunari Oda will compete at his final Japanese Nationals. The last time Nobu competed here was ELEVEN YEARS AGO. He also beat a bunch of kids to qualify as the 2024 Western Japan Regional Champion. Only Tatsuya Tsuboi and Kazuki Tomono have beaten Nobu this year. Takeru Amine Kataise, Shunsuke Nakamura, Takumi Sugiyama, Yuto Kishina, Sena Miyake, Shun Kobayashi, Haruki Honda and Shunya Matsuoka will also compete.

THE JUNIORS: 8 SKATERS JSF gives recommendations every year for the top finishers at the Japanese Junior Nationals to participate at the senior Nationals. Rio Nakata was just crowned as the new Junior National Champion, and the runner-up and his fellow JGP Finalist Sena Takahashi will want to join him in the Junior Worlds team. There is one more spot in the Junior Worlds team that will be decided here. Taiga Nishino, Shun Uemura, Shuntaro Asaga, Haru Kakiuchi, Ryoto Mori and Daiya Ebihara will also compete.

There are three groups playing a round robin style tournament. Each winner from the three groups will qualify for the olympics next year. Since Italy is a host, they got an automatic bid, as did th top five teams (USA, Canada, Finland, Czechia, Switzerland)

Japan are heavy favorites but missing one of their star players (Haruka Toko.) While i'd still put money on them, I'd expect these to be close games, especially between them and France.

I expect this to be the most lopsided group, in favor of Sweden, because I think that Sweden is much stronger than their IIHF ranking and have been on an upward trend and has all around roster depth and star power that the other three can't quite compete with. That said, Sweden made some controversial roster decisions and Denmark and Norway have some amazing goaltending, so we will see.

i anticipate Group I to be the most closely contested group. Although Hungary and Germany have some separation between Austria and Slovakia, both have star players and enough experience that you can envision a world where anyone steals the tournament, even in Germany are the favorites.

‘54: Las Vegas City Commission approves construction of Moulin Rouge, 3/29/54. Moulin Rouge was launched by a group of partners including New York restaurateur Louis Rubin, Beverly Hills developer Alexander Bisno (Bisno & Bisno), and smaller investors.

‘54: Jul. 16, Groundbreaking.

‘55: May 24, MR preview opening and debut Tropi-Can-Can show in the Cafe Rouge Theatre Restaurant; public opening on 5/26/55. Moulin Rouge Associates (owners) include Bisno, Rubin, Henry Bisno, among a group of over 20. Possible other owners include Joe Louis (2%), Joe West, Aron Blum, Edna Shulman, and Mark Lipsky. African-American staff include Joe Louis, host; Sonny Boswell, former Harlem Globetrotters, general manager; Jimmy Gay of Las Vegas, personnel director. "The hotel portion of the Moulin Rouge is not fully completed as yet" (RJ 5/27/55). MR "late show" starts from the opening of the hotel – "There's a great late show every night of the year at Moulin Rouge" (advertisement, RJ 5/24/55)

‘55: Jun. 1, first known lawsuit against MR from contractor, Lawrence Hawthorne. (RJ 6/1/55)

‘55: Oct. 5, City of Las Vegas threatens MR license unless finances and owners are disclosed.

‘55: Oct. 10, MR closes following legal action taken by Bartenders Union Local 165 and Culinary 226 over unpaid wages.

‘55: Oct. 19, MR files petition for bankruptcy.

‘56: Nov. 27, Bankruptcy sale. Lone bid of $470,000 rejected.

‘58: Nov., Leo Frey (Leroy Investment Co.) awarded the hotel by court. Frey, “a sizeable investor in the original corporation which owned the hotel and the partnership which operated it” (RJ 11/25/58). Frey is denied gaming license, reopens hotel and coffee shop. Other individuals later denied gaming license “because of unsuitable backgrounds of the landlords Leo, Herbert, and Karl Frey” (RJ 3/21/69).

‘85: Joe & Sarann Preddy, and Joe Walker lease Club Rouge and the bar.

‘90: Preddy & Walker group takes over ownership from Leroy Co., secures liquor and gaming license.

‘92: Moulin Rouge listed on National Register of Historic Places.

‘97: Sold to Bart Maybie.

‘03: Fire destroys much of the property.

‘04: Moulin Rouge Development Corp. buys property.

‘08: MRD Corp. files for bankruptcy.

‘09: Olympic Coast Investment takes ownership; another fire; sign donated and moved to Neon Museum; tower demolished in 2010.

‘12: OCI files bankruptcy.

‘17: Fire; last remains of MR and Montemartre Motel demolished.

Moulin Rouge's opened with the Tropi-Can-Can house show as featured entertainment, no headliner. Las Vegas resorts usually had two shows per evening, or a third late show on weekends. Moulin Rouge's Tropi-Can-Can included a late show every night – 8:15 PM, 11:15 PM and 2:15 AM. The revue in May 1955 included Stump and Stumpy, The Platters (Reed, Lynch, Williams, Robi, Taylor), Timmie Rogers, Margie McGlory, Teddy Hale, The Honey-Tones, Ann Weldon, Bob Bailey as master of ceremonies, and 20-27 dancers (sources vary) including Delcenia Boyd (16 years old), Norma Tolbert, Dee Dee Jasmin, Mary Louise Randolph, and Anna Bailey (28 y/o). The Platters recorded their hit version of "Only You" a month before the opening of Moulin Rouge, and the record was released summer '55.
