Celebrating a friend!
I know it’s not my typical style of illustration, but I couldn’t NOT celebrate this moment!!
Congratulations to Kostas Tzounis for winning Bronze in the 2024 paralympics in Paris. Onwards and upwards, man! Everyone’s proud!

Her name is Valentina Petrillo and she is a visually-impaired sprinter.
Time to support her, because even without the racism element I expect she will be getting some flak from Awful, Awful People.

“Too political”: The International Paralympic Committee refused to approve Ukraine’s team uniform for over two months. A key element of the controversy was a map of Ukraine that included Crimea, a peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. The IPC reportedly objected to this depiction, but the Ukrainian committee successfully argued to keep it. Additionally, the uniform incorporated a shade of green, which the Ukrainian committee described as a "protective" color and a symbol of the country's soldiers. The IPC raised concerns about the military connotations of this color choice. Valerii Sushkevych, the head of the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee, explained, "This form looks military, and the design of the form is very similar to the form of warriors. I believe that this is not a military uniform, but it says a lot. We came here not to a sports festival, not just to fight for a purely sporting [holiday], but also for peace. Those who live in Ukraine will understand why we chose [such a uniform]." Despite the IPC's objections, the Ukrainian team prevailed and will be wearing the contested uniforms in Paris. The design serves as a powerful symbol of Ukraine's ongoing struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

How visually impaired long jump works, according to what I saw today:
1 - telling the audience to shut the fuck up
2 - pointing the athlete in the right direction and keeping said direction
3 - while assuming a cool pose
4 - clapping guy for rhyhtm
5 - RUN! Maybe a bit more centered but okay
6 - Almost trample your clapping guy
7 - Land
8 - Roadworks cosplay and repowdering the jumping area

Has she learned nothing? She’s already being sued by Imane Khelif for cyber bullying. And now she’s doing it again?? The black mold has really infected her cognitive abilities.

I realised my recent paralympics posts could be read as, "i hate the paralympics" kind of stuff and thats not what i wanted. Its important to be able to critisise the things we love, and the reason why i had so many strong feelings/opinions is because i do genuinely love and care about the Paralympics and disability sports as a whole. So with the paralympics due to start in a few weeks (the 28th of August) please, if you're able to, tune in, even if it's just for the highlights.
The Paralympics themselves have a lot of issues which I already talked about, but a good amount of those issues stem from a perceived lack of interest/care from the public and the idea that "no one will care" if things arent right for us. It's much harder to justify not paying the athletes as much as their abled counterparts when they get the same publicity, it's harder for the organisers and people behind the scenes to get away with mistreatment when there's more eyes watching and more pressure to fix the issues. The athletes deserve respect, they deserve equal pay (which mostly comes from advertisers/sponsors, which depend on viewership) and their hard work deserves to be seen as more than just a funny joke or inspiration porn tear-jerker. Engage with places that treat the event and participants with the dignity it deserves.
If you're in Australia, channel 9 will be showing and streaming the highlights for free, but Stan Sports will be showing everything from every event - which is an absolutely MASSIVE thing. The entire paralympics have never been televised in Australia before, its only ever been highlights and some of the games of the more well-known sports. It sucks its locked behind a premium paywall but so was the full Olympics coverage this year, so it's not fully unique to us at least.
As for international viewers, try and find where things are for you and if they aren't being shown, put pressure on your TV networks/streaming services to include it for next time, or to include similar things like the disabled events at the commonwealth games (for those in commonwealth countries) or other global disabled sporting events - which can include sports not in the Paralympics!

First Ukrainian Paralympic teams arrive in Paris: men’s swimming, sitting volleyball, badminton, table tennis and rowing. Photo: National Sports Committee for the Disabled of Ukraine, Paralympic Committee
The Ukrainian Paralympic team has secured 126 licenses for this year’s Games. The national team comprises 235 members, including 140 athletes – 96 men, 44 women – and coaches, doctors, and masseurs. In comparison, Ukraine had 138 competitors at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. For the first time, the Ukrainian team will compete in 17 sports, including two debut events: boccia (pairs and individual events) and handcycle racing.
