Wilma Glodean Rudolph was an American track and field star and Olympic champion who overcame childhood polio to become an international sports icon. As a child, Rudolph was paralyzed in her left leg from polio and also contracted scarlet fever and double pneumonia. Doctors told her she would never walk again, but she defied the odds with therapy and went on to win three gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
