I think each member of Dethklok represents a different kind of shortcoming creative people need to overcome in order to reach their full potential— whether they call themselves artists or writers or musicians or whatever. Whether they do it professionally or as a hobby. Here's the way I see it:

Murderface represents self-deprecating and self destructive tendencies (i. e. not feeling good enough, wanting to quit, throwing tantrums, general low self-esteem)

Pickles is the drive for instant gratification whether it's via actual substance use or general hedonism ("I'd rather take a nap/smoke a joint and chill for a bit right now, I can totally get to this project later", etc)

Toki represents overly idealistic expectations and maybe also a different type of hedonism, one more focused on literal fun and games ("My art will be so good I'll be famous and everyone will love me, yay! ...Whaaat? I'm supposed to actually work on it? Nah, I'd rather play some videogames today")

Skwisgaar is perfectionism and a general ego, basically the other side of the coin he shares with Murderface ("I am the best and a literal fucking god at this"/Having meltdowns over the slightest mistake you make/"If I'm not as good as I expect myself to be then who even am I?")

Nathan is the tendency to get easily distracted while placing high expectations on one's own work. Plus the persistent guilt of past or potential failure.

BONUS: Magnus represents the resentment felt towards other, more skilled or more "successful" artists, whatever that might mean for each individual person; as well as resentment towards perceived external "threats" or obstacles to one's own success

Yes my point is that every artist has a tiny version of Dethklok living inside their head and whenever they're falling behind on their work it's because one of these guys is winning

Fantastic Planet

Skwisgaar is a complete snob when it comes to practically everything, and that includes his movie choices. He will, rightfully, defend this movie to his grave about how artistic the writing choices are, how meaningful the plot is, how the animation and character design is nothing less than brilliant. And he’s right. It doesn’t make the movie any less weird, but he’s right. After his first viewing, he got nightmares for a solid week about suddenly being subjected to be a meaningless pet to a more powerful creature than him and the thought terrifies him to this day.

Jawbreaker

Skwisgaar picked this up because he saw cute women on the cover, okay? And while he does still immensely enjoys the pure femininity this film radiates, he was specifically inspired by how bitchy and iconic all the main girls are. There are similar characters in Heathers and Mean Girls and Grease, but this was his first and will therefore always be his number one. The movie is just dark enough to be considered brutal and just funny enough to make him chuckle and is so incredibly quotable. Despite the fact that he messes up the quotes every time, he’s still proud of himself.

Black Swan

Not only is this another film that Skwis considers to be high-class, but it’s incredibly personal for him. I mean…cmon. An artist so obsessed with perfecting their craft that they descend into madness as the line between passion and obsession blurs? That practically screams Skwisgaar. “I am a God” is the same as “I was perfect” okay???He’s somewhat clueless on this; he’s scared to ever doubt his own talents, so he keeps himself ignorant of the fact that he relates to Nina as a performer by chalking it up to ‘I guess I have an appreciation for ballet’. He’s too busy practicing guitar to be doing psychological deep-dives.

Toki Wartooth

The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Toki is obviously going to be a lover of all Ghibli films, but I’m singling out this one because the entire movie feels like a comforting bedtime story. The traditional art style with dreamy colors, how you’re practically watching a fairytale unfold before your eyes, how the magic seems to come so naturally to the story. It’s a lovely experience and Toki’s inner child eats it right up. While the beginning and end of the movie is especially mystical, the middle part is what really hits him in the feels; The Princess in isolation as she performs the tasks her parents expect from her because it’s what they believe is best. Of course, Toki was abused rather than given the life of royalty. But still, he remembers being just as unsatisfied with a lifestyle that supposedly was ideal.

Sinister

I really like to think that Toki is the only one in Dethklok who actually enjoys watching traditional horror movies, because it’s funny. He gets the perfect amount of scared; frightened and jumpy, yet still able to handle himself. He prefers paranormal, as they tend to be a bit more brutal than slashers, and boy does Sinister do it! He, frankly, doesn’t care much for the plot outside of the spooky bits and gets super bored whenever the characters talk for too long about family drama or whatever. But during the tense, potentially gory bits, the movie has his full attention as he reacts just in sync with all the music cues and camera tricks. He really loves films where kids turn out to be the dangerous one, as he feels that some sort of justice is finally being played out.

The Princess Bride

I believe that Toki’s first film when he came to America was, in fact, The Princess Bride. It’s an absolute classic. Even if a young, immigrant Toki was somewhat new to a television and could only grasp a tiny bit of English, he was as invested in the story as he possibly could’ve been, blown away by all the action and intimacy. He kept rewatching it as he got older, as well as other must-sees, and uncovered a bit more of the plot every time he saw it as his understanding of English expanded. To this day, Toki still wholeheartedly believes that it is the perfect film and rewatches it quite regularly

Mad God

So, no, I did not have any ounce of an idea of what this movie was about when I originally watched it, and I’m still not 100% sure tbh but an hour and a half of these pure vibes would totally be up Nathan’s alley. The post-apocalyptic setting, all the gore, the details of the various monsters, and I think he would just really appreciate it from an artist’s standpoint as well. This movie would just resonate with him, even if he wouldn’t have a fucking clue what was going on the whole time.

Mary and Max

I’m, personally, a bit on-the-fence about this movie, but it is undeniably sweet and I headcanon Nate to be on the spectrum so 🤷

This would be, like, his guilty pleasure film. The movie he knows is for kids and is totally not brutal but he loves it anyway. The, “I do not feel disabled, defective, or a need to be cured” really hits for him every single time. He rewatches it at least once every few months, especially when he’s in some sort of emotional slump.

Mandy

Another one that just like, like, big Nathan energy, you know? He just seems like a guy to really love loose plots with trippy visuals and strong emotions attached to them. Also, this movie is so completely badass, it is certified metal in his book. He also finds the story incredibly tragic; having the love of your life stripped away from you in such circumstances really tugs at his heartstrings, but in a way that gets him pumped up rather than sad. This is probably his go-to when people ask, “what’s your favorite movie?”

Pickles the Drummer

Okay this is my guilty pleasure movie. I usually don’t like stoner-comedy from the 90s, but this movie hits different. Maybe I just find Crawl hot. Anyway, I’m projecting that onto Pickles. He honestly probably finds a lot of crappy comedies to be peak film, and this is no exception. Pauly Shore pretending to be a country boy for a whole movie? Hells yeah. Pickles would watch while high off his mind, laughing his butt off and going to town on some cheez-its or something. And you know what? He deserves it.

Opal

I’m counting short films because I feel like Opal is the movie for Pickles. He’d watch it on a whim, because these are not usually the types of things he enjoys, and then he’d in tears over the emotional rollercoaster he did not agree to go on. Like, he grew up in a neglective household with authority figures that were overly-selfish and projected their own problems onto the youngest one in the house, to which he had to hide within his own brain more often than not just to properly function. And then he just…watched it happen all again in the hypnotic style of Jack Stauber. The Mom’s song had him in gasping tears for a while, the way you get when a movie somehow perfectly captures your own trauma right in front of you. And the ending??? Ugh. Go watch Opal, guys, it’s on YouTube.

This movie is actually so insane. It’s not scary in a horror-movie way, like it meant to be, it’s scary as in ‘What the hell is happening and why do I understand it?’ Pickles doesn’t like most traditional horror films, as the long, quiet suspense bores him and the sudden jumpscares freak him the hell out way more than they should. But he loves the campy-wacko-type horror that they were apparently making in 70s Japan. It’s just scary enough to get his heart pumping, but the pure silliness of it all overrides that, getting him in a giddy mood and excited to see what happens next.

When Toki was caught hanging out with Rockzo late at night it's pretty obviously implied that Charles was woken up and called into the room to help handle it

But later in the same episode the guys are hanging out in the hot tub (or playing videogames in Toki's case) while Charles is literally just standing there 🧍‍♂️

The guys are chatting about freeballing and generally pretty relaxed before Rockzo comes barging in. But Charles is just there

I know that the logical reason for this is that the scene needed him to be there in order to interact with Rockzo but I like to imagine that this was one of the first, if not the first time, that the guys invited him to "pal around" with them. They asked him to be there. "Well, what exactly do you want me to, uh, do here?". "Nothin', just come hang out with us". They probably suggested he get in the tub with them but he's obviously much too professional for that so he just remained outside... watching

And the thing is the guys are too stupid to even attempt to make him feel included in their conversation and Charles is both too disinterested and too awkward to try and push it. They cannot even fathom that he might feel left out (he doesn't, but it's still impolite of them). They probably assume he's having as much fun as they are... or straight up forgot that he was even there in the first place 😭

Either that or he's practicing observation like a Montessori teacher. Whichever i find funnier at the moment

Hello Anon!! I actually have already done a HC covering Autism here!! However I would love nothing more than to write some more HCs for different forms of Neurodivergence if that is ok?

I will be covering: ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette Syndrome, OCD, and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). I truly hope I do this HC justice.

Tourette Syndrome

Nathan - When he first met his partner, he was positive that they were pretty much the coolest person on the whole planet. Yeah they had a few tics. And yeah sometimes those tics caused his S/O to make unwanted movements and sounds. But he thought that it was really bad ass and they were the strongest person on the whole planet. Anxiety was a bitch. He knew so himself. He couldn’t hardly imagine what it would be like if his anxiety caused his nerves to explode with energy and make his body do things he couldn’t control. But his partner handled it so well… and he was so proud of them. So when he saw people trying to start shit with his partner for something they struggled to control, he started shit right back. He’s a protector at heart after all.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

Pickles - he wasn’t immediately trusted by his partner’s entire system and that showed. When they first met he actually met one of his future S/O’s alters who gave him the impression that they kind of really hated him. A few months later when they met again at a less stressful time in his future partner’s life he got to meet the their host personality. They instantly hit it off and dispite the way they acted as if it were the very first time they had ever met the man Pickles knew they were truly something special. Into their friendship he slowly learned about his partner’s alters and their personalities. Some that were fond of him, some that were indifferent as long as their host was happy, and some that saw him as a threat. He was supportive of his partner and all of their personalities, even the ones that didn’t like him that much. He was always very polite and patient with them as he knew they were all part of this beautiful system he agreed to love and cherish.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Murderface- when William first met his future partner he thought they were just really into being clean. It never bothered him. Hell most people were cleaner than him so who was he to judge. But what really caught his attention were the other little things that seemed to stop them in their tracks in their daily lives. Like the amount of times they had to lock the door after walking into the house. That same number followed them to the number of times they had to start the stove for dinner… and the dishwasher. It was just minor things. So Murderface never minded much. It never harmed anyone else or his partner to do things a special way in order to make them comfortable so why be upset? He understands that OCD can and could for his partner become something that could take over their life. He was always aware later on after they officially explained their OCD to him to watch for any sign that his partner was in need of outside intervention or assistance. But with the help they already had and the skills they used he knew they were going to be ok as long as they trusted him and their supporters. He trusted his partner to make those difficult decisions for themselves.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Skwisgaar- when Skwisgaar first met his future partner he was a little taken aback to be honest. They were incredible. Absolutely stunning. And so so knowledgeable about so many cool things. They switched subjects and lost track of things from time to time sure. But who didn’t when they got excited and passionate about their favorite topics right? He noticed his partner moved around a lot and fidgeted some. But so did he. So that never once bothered him. If anything it soothed him to know that he wasn’t the only one walking around the living room on movie night making light commentary on the way the actors dressed and acted out of character in that one scene. The two became fast besties and even faster lovers.

Dyslexia

Toki - when he first met his partner knew he’d met his forever match. They were funny, kind, brilliant, and overall perfect. They had some issues reading but so did he! Hell most of the time they were correcting his English so he never cared if the words were spelled right. There were so many other things to do than read and write anyway! Like take walks in the rain. Go to the zoo with a guide. Paint wild and crazy things that pop into their minds. And go to the wacky building stuffed animal stores to see if they could find rare stuffed animals and make wild combinations.

Once she realizes you're not like that, though, and genuinely love Nathan and, in turn, treat him how he deserves, she's alllllllll over you.

She's going to want your number, your Skype, your Facebook, everything.

She'll pull out the baby pictures too. It greatly embarrasses your brutal boyfriend.

His dad would be the same, on the fence a little, but he overall trusts Nathan a little more.

He might try to plan a fishing trip, though, and Nathan is going to be all over that, so good luck getting out of that if you viscerally dislike fishing.

Overall, don't sweat it! As long as you treat their boy right, they love you, and you might as well be family now.

William Murderface

It's not willing on his part at all.

Stella is showing up unannounced, ranting and raving about not telling her he finally got hitched, and he must just want her to die or something.

He's snippy and miserable the whole time. Not miserable in the same sense Pickles was, he's more annoyed than anything.

Stella isn't the most gentle woman. She's abrasive and loud and can be partial to physical violence, but she does care a little bit about her grandson.

She really sucks at showing it, and definitely fucked him up with her parenting style (if his emotional constipation and short fuse didn't make that clear) but she did step up when his parents died instead of letting him go through the system, so.

All this to say, she's giving you a shotgun talk.

William will pry it out of her hands, of course, and curse her out for it, but it's happening !!

After that, though, don't worry, you're family now. Actually, maybe you should worry.

This means that whatever small politeness she whipped up before is long gone, you're a Murderface now, you are going to get treated like one.

Although William couldn't care less about his grandmother's opinion, he cares about yours. So, to see you embracing his family in full stride without getting scared off is more than heartwarming to him.

Skwisgaar Skwigelf

Again, it's fully unwilling on his end. It would honestly have to be something you want.

I think it's needless to say his relationship with his mom is weird. He truthfully wouldn't mind never seeing her again, especially after the events of fatherklok.

But again, if you really, really, want it then, yeah, he'll take you down to Sweden.

Surfetta doesn't have much of an opinion on you. What you are to her son is no concern to her.

She's most likely tipsy the whole time and disappearing for periods at a time.

The whole thing will feel like a waste of time, and Skwisgaar is stressed.
