More headcanons for this idea:

Because of what the MerWitch Francis did to him, Wade can never sing again. He loses Vanessa because of this- the mermaid he thought would be his mate, they only needed 2 more moons together before it would be officially blessed and they’d be life partners. It wasn’t that Vanessa was so shallow to abandon him, Wade is just now not seen as a good mate. If he can’t sing, he can’t hunt, if he can’t hunt, he can’t care for their young. It’s biology, nothing personal, and Wade understands that. 

Wade is now seen as a ‘lone shark’ because of this. He does try to hunt fish by pushing them up into the shallows of islands during low tide. Yes it’s a higher chance of beaching himself, but it’s a risk he takes for food. Because he isn’t eating as well as he should be, his tail starts losing some of its colour, turning darker- another way to make him an outsider. He used to have a vibrant red tail, but now it’s dull. 

Logan, after being saved by a man eating mermaid- he knows the stories, beautiful voices that pull sailors to their death- Logan takes it as a sign that maybe he should try to live. At least then this beast won't get another good meal and will die- one less Mer in the world the better.

Logan sets up traps for fish, leaving guts in shallow pools so that other bigger fish will come to eat and get stuck. Thing is- Wade thinks it's for him, as a thankyou. 

So Wade starts to leave Logan gifts as well, items from shipwrecks from long ago. He leaves knives, swords, anything shiny- old coins, bottles that have swirling dark liquid inside. Logan decides not to try to kill Wade after the second time Wade brings him alcohol that’s been cooled by the ocean floor. He starts eating his catches with Wade on the rocky outcrop. 

Wade is so excited- is this Logan trying to be a mate??? He’s feeding him, that’s what mates do. He takes Wade’s gifts, that's also what mates do! And sometimes, when the moon is high, and Logan is a bit too tipsy, he sings softly to the moon. And Wade is in love. The sorrow filled music of lost lovers and friends that have long since passed. Wade can’t sing back, but he can humm. His humms become haunting sounds around the bay. Logan does feel a tiny pull to the other when Wade humms, wanting to sing more so the other can humm along. 

One day, a crew of pirates come ashore. Logan reasons with them, and they agree to take him with them to port- he bribes them with the coins Wade has given him. Logan goes to tell Wade this, and the mer is heartbroken. Were they not mates now? They shared meals, shared gifts, shared songs. 

Logan explains how he’s a human, a human and a mer could never be. Sure he likes Wade, when the other isn’t chattering a mile a minute asking about human life- but he is human. He needs to be with humans to live. The island is running out of supplies, and he can’t live off fish forever. 

Wade won’t take this as goodbye though- he refuses. So he follows the ship, day and night. He waits to see Logan on the ship, but never does. He’s even more heartbroken thinking Logan never wanted to see him again, and almost gives up hope- gives up everything. He’s starving. 

It’s the second week of following the ship, Wade is slowing down, running out of steam, when he hears it. The beautiful sorrow filled voice of Logan- and it’s coming from the lower part of the ship! Wade had no way of knowing this, but the pirates threw Logan in the brig. Wade hums back to Logan, the haunting sounds start freaking people out on the deck. The start to a Mers song? That’s fucking deadly. So they throw Logan overboard.

Wade is there to catch him, and tries to keep them afloat, but he's starving, and so so tired. He doesn’t think that they’ll make it, but if he were to die, he’d die with the man he loves. 

By some power of fate, moon magic, or just dumb luck- a storm pulls in. It throws the two around a bit, catches the ship ablaze, and somehow they are pushed ashore on another island. Logan wakes first, and drags Wade up the sand a bit. He is able to catch a fish or two and hand feeds Wade as he is so weak. It takes a while but soon Wade is awake, and moving. Still weak, but alive. They are both alive. Alive on a new island where there are dead pirates pushed ashore from the storm- pulse supplies. Logan gets to work saving as much of the supplies he can, and Wade eats. 

It's disturbing for Logan to see the Mer feasted on so many men, but there is something beautiful and deadly with how Wade tears the meat to shreds. How the blood staining his skin and tail make him look even more vibrate and alive. 

Logan is able to set up on the island, making shelter, using the guts from the deadmen as fish bait, and again they are surviving together. They are happy to have each other again. Logan saying how that wasn’t supposed to happen, that will never happen again. Humans are horrible creatures, and how Wade is the only living creature he trusts now. 

Something something something, time goes by and-

Rumors start to spread of a wild man on an island that is protected by a Mer. The Man and the Mer, a deadly duo. If your ship crashes along the shore, you better hope the ocean takes your life before either of them find you. A wild man who will kill any human that comes on his island, tearing you apart to feed to his Mer love. A Mer who will take your life, and offer you remains to his human love.
