so, about the fish man that I love. I wanted to do a short analysis of him before we get him in the full series.

this will be full of season two predictions, shipping, headcanons, and backstory ideas.

DEATH

first, we'll start with his death. ironic, right?

anyways, we know that Baxter was supposed to have died on the Titanic, but since Viv didn't want to be Insensitive, she changed it to a vague ship that sunk in the 1910s. since he is an anglerfish, which lives on the sea floor, we can infer that he probably didn't make it out of the ship, and sunk to the bottom of the sea with it. thats all we know right now, and I will give ideas to expand on that and give him some character.

he might have a fear of not having enough air, or a fear of sinking or being pulled down.

he absolutely hates the movie "Titanic," and complains about how inaccurate it is to everyone (fun hc)

LIFE

we know nothing about his life, other than he was some sort of scientist. I like to imagine that he was a heartless scientist who disregarded everyone else's lives, and experimented on people.

A reason why he could be so short is that he believed his life to be more important, or 'higher' than everyone else. that is why he is short, as hell usually makes you look like things you hate, therefore he would hate being viewed as lesser, or smaller than others, and now quite literally.

we do not know how old he is, but I would assume based on looks that he is 25-30, somewhere around that range.

RELATIONSHIPS

we dont know much about Baxter at all in any of these, as I have stated, but in the sneak peak we know he had a negative past with sir pentious. since we know sir pentious is an inventor, not a scientist, therefore he cannot create biological life. one of my theories is that sir pentious made the egg bois with Baxter's help and betrayed baxter, while taking the egg bois with them. I also personally headcanon they dated, but that might not be true, and isn't really backed up by anything.

now, onto who I think owns his soul. I believe vox would be his owner, as vox has a proven history of working with sea creatures, and it is a very popular theory. I think he has two reasons to be at the hotel. one, obvious one, for studying redemption. he is a scientist, why wouldn't he want to do that? the second, being he was spying for vox. my reasoning? there are two reasons I think could be true.

vox hired Baxter because sea creature AND the fact vox knew sir pentious and Baxter had a rivalry, so vox would take advantage of that and give Baxter the chance to upstage his enemy.

two, baxter knew sir pentious failed at being a spy so that's why he accepted the job, so more intent on Baxter s side for this.

MISC.

baxter is still a scientist in hell, obviously. so I'd imagine in his 100+ years of being in hell, he probably has his own lab. we don't know a lot about him, still, which leaves a lot for the imagination. which, brings me to my next part, headcanons!!

HEADCANONS!

Baxter is trans (only female anglerfish have the esca)

Baxter wears glasses but only for protection during science experiments, because anglerfish have excellent vision, so he wouldn't be low vision.

he avoids alcohol and smoking like the plague, as he is very health conscious and doesn't like husk at first because of it

the only person in the hotel he can actually bear talking to (besides niffty) is cherri. they both have a past with sir pentious, and he would probably think she is the most self actualized out of all the guests, (he doesn't think Vaggie is the most because he dislikes how violent and protective she is)

I like how much of a high energy yapper he is. I think he's just a REALLY fun character overall, great voice acting, great character arc, funny banters and idk I'm just obsessed with him. I don't really dislike anything about him, he's an asshole and I like that for him :3c

I love a morally ambiguous asshole and he sure is one <3 His betrayal makes him so interesting to me. There's a nice little theme of him betraying the 141 while in the end staying truly loyal to Shepherd, while he himself inspires loyalty to his Shadows.

I love his rivalry with Soap and Ghost post betrayal but that fucker was getting along so well with them, especially Soap. Could have had a great bromance Phil.

Just a general fantasy AU with him is really fun. Him being a warrior at the head of a group of mercenaries, idk, I like the vibe, and I like to think about it when I ship him with my OC.

I hc that he came from a wealthy but very religious family who did not like how flamboyant he was growing up. He pretty much left home as soon as he possibly could and joined the army right away so he could get away and prove to them and himself that he was stronger than they thought. He got popular with his fellow soldiers quickly because of his humor and cheery attitude (and huh, other reasons :3c). When both of his parents died, he inherited the family fortune and that's what he used to create Shadow Company.

Hated his gut LMAOOOO. Hated his betrayal, hated his attitude, everything. Then I started playing a lot of warzone, specifically plunder, and getting him as the announcer and seeing the cutscene with him over and over again, I started commenting on how fruity he was and how he has a nice ass and stuff and my friend was the unwilling witness of me turning from "hate his guts" to "kind of like him" to "fully fucking obsessed." Then I replayed the game and I was fully sold.

Now he's probably my favorite character in the CoD games, I'm fully invested in my ship between him and my OC and I'm just having a silly little time <3

Yes that’s how random i can be: i can mix together two things that are basically impossible to happen in canon and, you know, just have some fun imagining how for example these characters would interact with each other, would they bond or hate each others guts? That’s the fun thing of imagination: when you don’t care about what others might think about your ideas, you leave room for cool endless possibilities! :)

Dr. Phantasmo x Abijah Fowler headcanons:

If we ignore the ACTUAL dates where Telltown and BES takes place and pretend these two are in the same year (now which year would be up to you, dear readers), we can work better with these headcanons, alright? Good.

And now, without further ado: Fowler would have recognized Phantasmo (formerly known as Victor) thanks to T-oby (i’ll explain better on my mini series (or should i say one-shots?) of fanfics that i’ve promised of BESxTelltown) that he (AF) remembered when he was visiting a small town and saw him (T-oby) in the distance and decided to greet the robot. They have exchanged some small talk until Fowler brought up about Victor:

AF: where is that genius scientist who created you?

T-oby: o-oh… w-well… you see… my father isn’t the same anymore…

AF: Oh? May i see him then? I am curious to see what you mean by “isn’t the same anymore”! Has he finally saw how the world truly works? Perhaps it could be that?

T-oby: . . .I… i don’t think he’s going to remember you but… s-sure…

And so, they both went to see Phantasmo: T-oby was carrying a lot of plastic bags with things that his father asked him to bring and Abijah didn’t offer any help (because he be like that, an asshole)

When they finally got to the mansion where Phantasmo lives, Fowler couldn’t help but chuckle and comment about how worn out that mansion was, it was such a waste having a big house like that and not taking care of it

When they opened the door and went downstairs to Phantasmo’s lab, Fowler was surprised to see a ghost and not a man. He points to Phantasmo and asks T-oby if that was him: Victor.

T-oby: Yes… and n-no… it’s hard to explain… you know? A lot has… changed ever since you and that blue eyed samurai left…

Phantasmo was so busy that he didn’t hear the two talking or rather, he couldn’t care less about who his “son” brought to his home

Fowler laughed loudly and said that explained the reason why the mansion was in such a bad state. Phantasmo started to growl quietly and told his “son” to get rid of the “guest” because he (AF) was disturbing him (Phantasmo).

T-oby: m-maybe we should g-go… my dad hates being disturbed and-! H-hey…! What do you think you are doing??

Fowler ignored T-oby’s warnings and decided to sneak up on the scientist. But he quickly turned just in time before Fowler could give a big old pat in his back:

Phantasmo: are you deaf or something? Am i speaking in French? I said you must leave!

Fowler: Aye now, aye now! Why are you treating an old friend like that? You used to be a lot nicer, Vict-!

T-oby quickly ran into Fowler’s direction and placed his hands over his mouth. The robot quickly apologized to his father and tried to bring Fowler with him to another room of the mansion. But was stopped by his father, who told his “son” to take off his hands off the man’s mouth:

Phantasmo: an old “friend”… you say? Pardon you but WHO the fuck are you…? Also, how do you know my n- ahem, my OLD name?

AF: Wow! So you are saying you don’t remember me? You hurt me! *fakes dramatic pose and smirks* how could you forget me? I was that man who was accompanied by that blue eyed miss and-

Phantasmo: wait… can… can you repeat that again…?

AF: hey, don’t cut off me like that, it’s rude. But continuing: i am that man who was accompanied by that blue eyed-

Phantasmo: samurai… hmm… what was her name? What was her name… Mizu…? Yeah, yeah! Mizu!

AF: hey, i already told you to not interrupt me like that… and you remember her? And not… me? Oh, you have hurt me even more now! *fakes gasp and places one hand over chest*

Phantasmo: you know… i Think I’m… starting to remember you too~ yeah, weren’t you that man who wanted to buy T-oby~? *starts circling around the red hair man*

AF: so that’s ALL you remember ME for? Ohoho, you know how to “flatter” someone… specially an old friend!

Phantasmo bursts out laughing and compliments Fowler’s sarcasm… then, Phantasmo offered him to sit on a seat and the two started to keep in touch of what happened to both of them:

Phantasmo explained that his memory wasn’t always the best and because of that he doesn’t remember a lot of things after he died: he doesn’t know where is his wife (he presumes that she’s dead), he doesn’t remember his past life and etc…

Abijah explained to Phantasmo that the reason he was accompanied by Mizu was because he was one of the suspects of being her father and that she was holding him “hostage” until she found the other two men who probably brought her out to this world. Phantasmo laughed at him and told him he was being too weak of being held as a hostage by someone who he could easily overpower. Fowler just shrugged off and said that indeed he had the upper hand against Mizu but she quickly turned the table and was ready to kill him…

Phantasmo: T-oby! Bring some tea for this gentleman! NOW!

AF: is that offer still available? I really could pay good money for him!

Phantasmo: Hmmm… just… how much are we talking about~?

AF: 100,000,000 golden ryu~♪

T-oby “accidentally” dropped the hot tea tray on Fowler and looked at Phantasmo angrily until he cowered when his dad looked at him even more angrily…

Phantasmo: forgive my… “son”… he is sometimes a little clumsy but nothing like a good old spanking wouldn’t resolve this… are you still willing to buy him~?

AF: hmmm… he seems to love you a lot, but yes: i am still thinking of buying him~♪

T-oby: H-HOW ABOUT YOU MOVE IN TO OUR MANSION? AFTER ALL, YOU ARE STILL HIDING FROM MIZU, R-RIGHT?? HERE IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO-!

Phantasmo shouted at T-oby and told him to shut up. The poor robot went silent and basically that’s how Abijah moved in to Phantasmo’s mansion!

These two would be plotting many evil plans to take over the world (technically, Fowler already owned entire armies and had many costumers because of his trafficking and other illegal things he does. But the more the better)

Charlie would have a lot of difficulty to reach Phantasmo now thanks to Fowler (have you seen his aim?? He has scarily good aim… and also his size-). She would need to team up with Mizu to beat him and Phantasmo. And how would that happen if Mizu was probably at the other side of the world? Well… T-oby may or may not have secretly tried to sail (along with Charlie and Squirt) to find Mizu and tried to bring her to Fowler, so that way she could finally have her revenge and T-oby would be free from that man🤭

These two (Mizu and Charlie) would team up to take down Phantasmo and Fowler and Charlie made it very, VERY clear to Mizu that they wouldn’t be killing ANYONE. That they would sent both Phantasmo and Fowler to the prison: where they belong. Of course, Mizu is very against the idea and wants to kill Fowler. They have a little fight here and there but eventually Mizu agrees to just send Fowler to the prison.

These two (AF and Phantasmo) would pass off the “can’t stand this bitch for one minute🙄” to “me and bestieee🥰” kind of vibes, you know?

If they somehow had the idea of marrying each other, it would probably go down like this:

Phantasmo: Buhahahahaha! Give up now! We are going to take over the world you fools! And there’s nothing you and your blue eyed friend can do to stop us!!!

Fowler: hey, hey. Phantasmo.

Phantasmo: WHAT? Can’t you see i am in the middle of an evil speech?

Fowler: i was here thinking… we could be something more than… evil partners in crime you know?

Phantasmo: are you really suggesting what i think you’re suggesting right NOW?

Fowler: *bends in on knee* i know right now isn’t the best time but… would you marry me?

Charlie: . . .

Mizu: . . .

T-oby: . . . *screaming internally* “please say no, please say no, please say n-“

Phantasmo: . . . are you serious right now?

Fowler: *opens ring box, revealing a big diamond ring*

Phantasmo: *snatching the diamond ring as soon as he sees it and placing on his finger* Yeah, yeah sure whatever, we are married now and i’ll be the husband of this relationship, understood? Good.

Fowler: *chuckles and gets up to teasingly kiss Phantasmo on the cheek*

Charlie: oh God i think i’m gonna puke-

Mizu: simply d i s g u s t i n g.

T-oby: *faints*

Phantasmo: *blushing and shouting at Fowler* Abijah! Don’t kiss me in front of my arch nemesis!

Fowler: *laughs even more*

After they would get married, i imagine that they would constantly bicker a lot but would still “love” each other, lol

Phantasmo would sometimes try to kill Abijah to take possession of his fortune, lol (and Abijah couldn’t be bothered by it because Heiji shindo also tried to kill him when they were “business” partners. So he (AF) is used to it by now, lol)

Usually it’s Abijah who is the one who makes Phantasmo flustered, because he (Phantasmo) is easily flustered by any little thing that Fowler does: especially his public “affection”

But on more serious matters; unfortunately, yes Adam's character was quite the controversial one after Volume 3, mostly because the writers decided to forgo a lot of his activism in favor of...being an abuser. It's a very gross direction they've taken him, and sadly that turned a lot of people against him. Which is fine! No one has to like him, but there is a lot of racism against him that his haters would engage in that I do not condone, and that racism traces back to how RWBY as a show doesn't care about the racial activism story that they decided to include to write it properly, especially about how Adam's past and character was treated.

And on the matters of him being a groomer, don't worry! Nowhere in any materials involving RWBY states that he's a groomer or any kind of sexual offender. It's just a very nasty thing that Adam haters create to hate him more, and it's very gross and ignorant. His abuse on Blake was an emotional, then physical one, but never has it been sexual. Nor is he a groomer in any other way, since Blake willingly joined up with the WF. We don't even know how old he is! So you thinking he's an adolescent is not incorrect at all. It's a terrible headcanon made by haters who doesn't care about the terrible implications of grooming to approach it respectfully.

But Hanekoma, Byron, Saguaro, Cryano, Souan, and Rindo all got picked up for this reason. Abe was someone I created as a result of wanting to flesh out my Hanekoma's background and just grew from an NPC into his own thing. And as for all the folks over at @networkscrambled, I picked them up because I felt like there were a ton of characters in TWEWY that just didn't get enough love. In some very rare instances I'm willing to go with it, with people I have talked a lot to and really trust. When the situation calls for it and the muses are ready for that step. When it comes most to anything else, I have no trouble. Angst, whump, etc. Oh, but of course, there are the obvious unmentionables things I won't write. Minor x adult, non-con, incest, etc. I won't touch those with a ten-foot-pole. But I feel like those were fairly obvious.

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 ? I'll be honest, I really enjoy writing ships. Platonic ships, familial ships esp., romantic ships, hate ships. Whatever. I really love exploring the dynamics between two or more characters and seeing how they perceive each other and explore each other and develop together as they grow and change and confront themselves. Character connections is always what gets me hyped for books and tv series and movies and any kind of storytelling and I just really love doing it. I really love writing any kind of genre that can bounce off of those, be it sad or happy. But really, any time I get to write at all is a good time.

𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 ? Hm. I think I'll take something really small that I notice and then just run with it as far as I can, stretch it out as much as I can until that one thing becomes the foundation of that character. I remember reading a transcript for an interview in which it was explained (roughly, because I can no longer remember), that Hanekoma was designed as a character that was on the up and up but was still messy. Or... something to that effect. I won't use quotations because I can't remember the exact quote, but it was like that. And I also remembered that Hanekoma called himself a gambler. And so using that information, I built Hanekoma as a man who in life had had a gambling addiction that ruined him, but that he was "on the up and up but still messy". And that became an anchor to how I built every headcanon after that. Similarly, I noticed Saguaro was the only teacher to continue to use honorifics with your name (Master or Miss) even after befriending you as well as noticing his insistence on cleanliness, and that was how I decided he was a butler in his past, which then lead to be the foundation of every other headcanon for him. It's admittedly a strange process, but it works for me!

𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 ? I write better when I play music, by far, but I almost never do. And this is simply because I forget every single time to start it up before I start writing. And even if I do remember, I usually then go on to pause it to do something and forget to turn it back on. It's the worst.

𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 ? I tend to wing them. The only planning I ever do is when I see and read my partner's reply but am unable to reply when I get it. So I spend all of the time until I get to it daydreaming about how I'm gonna respond. I think, as a reactive sort of roleplayer, I just want to be able to feel the emotions of my muse as they're feeling them, going through the reply and feeling how they'll react to it right away. With a lot of pre-planning, I feel like I kind of lose a sense of my character, and it feels more detached, so I can't get those real heavy emotions in my reply. So I think I do wing it as much as possible.

I love how the air starts to smell different and how the temps drop low enough for me to start wearing sweaters again. I love the spicy smells that come with fall, from foods to perfumes. I love fall the most, it's very cozy.

𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝 ? So many! Well. I worry about calling people my friends and best friends when I don't 100% know for sure that they feel that way about me or would even appreciate me saying that about them. I have a lot of people here that I really really love. And I hope they care about me, too. But I might just stick with a very small number of names that I know for sure they feel the same way. First, there's @mundanemiseries who tagged me in this in the first place~ ^^ Kellin is so so sweet to me and has been such a help to me and I really love their muses. Joel and Hanekoma are so sweet together~ @wrongtrain is another. Morton has been my friend here for such a long time, and they're the one person I feel like can actually unlock my brain to understand what's going on with me most of the time. I never feel quite so understood as I do when I'm talking to Morty. I love them so so much and I love writing with them when they're around to do so, whoever they've got the space for that day. And I would be remiss not to mention @justiceburst, who was one of the first Joshua muns I ever interacted with and soon became my canon Joshua. Dusty may be writing new characters now, but they're no less engaging of a writer and they're still such a close friend to me. I care so deeply for them and everything we've been through together. ^^ Then there's @fangedstories. Roxy has been consistently active with me since meeting me, which is something that still surprises me. XD I'm really grateful to her for putting up with me so much. @lollipopsandgunshots is another. Katee talks to me so much and we've clicked so well together ooc. I love the work we've done with our muses, too, and especially that Katee is one of the few folks that I can actually get ideas for Aku with. ^^ There's also @phoenix-flamed, who has been so kind and caring towards me since the moment we met. I am so grateful to be able to have Vonny to talk to when I need it, though I admit that I don't poke them nearly enough. Still, I have them to thank for Hanekoma's whole FFXVI verse, so they continue to be a big inspiration to me regardless. ^^ And last but not even remotely the lest, @rubiesintherough has become such a dear friend to me. I used to be so afraid of Ruby, wanting to interact and never really knowing if I could stand up to her impeccable writing. But I am so so glad I finally reached out to start talking to her because she's so nice and so fun to talk to and I love all of her muses so so much. do ya have an specific type of dynamic for shankslu? like a simplified version of how they should act with eachother (and then intricate it depending on events and such) or just work with the flow?

I never think in terms of “should” when considering ship dynamics. I’ve developed this attitude for two reasons.

first, let me try to explain how this relates to shankslu specifically. for me, part of the fun of shipping shankslu right now in this very moment is because they have not yet met again. so, we don’t know precisely what their relationship will be like when they do. to me, that makes this ship a sandbox where I can imagine and create whatever I want. it’s a very unique ship, in that sense, and I just love it.

I’m still working with the sand Oda has put in the box and the little buckets and shovels he’s given me, but even so the nature of their relationship and their bond in the canon, and how important they are to each other, lends to so many possibilities. Shanks is very special to Luffy, and when writing this ship it’s with Shanks that I personally find I can explore emotions with Luffy that we don’t usually see much from him, like shyness (as is (and will be) the case with my fic “for i am love-sick” sigh). on the other hand, at this moment Shanks is still quite mysterious, which makes him a very flexible character to work with. I find write explore possible dynamics with them to my hearts content—because shanks and luffy haven’t met yet, anything is possible! so:

to explain it a little more broadly: whenever I am creating, when I start thinking in terms of “should,” I find it mostly stifling. I write fanfiction to explore themes and emotions, and when I think in terms of “could” instead of “should” it frees me up to, basically, do whatever I want! as a fanfiction writer, while a lot of what I write about stems from moments in the canon, or are expansions of themes and emotions that are already there, as a creator I very purposefully don’t let my own love for the material I’m working with hold me back. I am already being irreverent toward the source material by making Mr. Oda’s protagonist and his self-insert smooch, etc. why then would I not push myself to my own creative limits and write something, say, like “heart shaped bed”?

as for the other reason: having this attitude helps me be a good member of my fan community. there is a long and repetitive history in fandom writ large of shippers who even ship the same ship arguing over “right” and “wrong” interpretations and ship dynamics, how ships and characters “should” and “shouldn’t” be written. frankly, I hate that shit. I hate how I’ve seen it tear shipping communities and whole fandoms apart. I love shipping shankslu! when I started shipping shankslu, it felt like I was the only one in the world who shipped them. now, three years later, there are more shankslu shippers than ever—I just hit 400 followers on Twitter, which I’m not saying as a brag, I’m saying as in, I never imagined there would be that many people interested in shankslu. we have the server, I get to chat with other shippers—it’s more than I ever dreamed. each one of them are different and they each create their own works with their own visions and interpretations.

I’m not gonna turn around and say to any one of them, “no, you’re doing it wrong. this is how it should be.” you know? like. imagine if I did that.

(and to go back to not letting anything hold me back, whenever other fans try to push their “should” on me, I block them, simple as that.)

it’s not to say I don’t have my preferences while writing and dreaming over shankslu; I personally tend toward headcanons and I usually write fic where they are the type of tender for each other bards have been singing of for centuries, of all the facets of his character I often focus most on Luffy’s emotional intelligence, and whenever I’m writing Shanks I usually write him as a good man or at least a man who wants to and/or is trying to be good. that is just what speaks to me. but I know there are fans out there who are, for example, more into a version of Shanks where he is a bad man, and does not feel bad about not being good, and that’s fine! I live by “lushanks agenda” and some shippers I chat with see Luffy as a fixed bottom, and that’s fine! I often read those works, and whether or not the interpretation is something I would write, I still talk to the fans who make those works about their thoughts and interpretations, and as a fellow fan I support and encourage their creativity. my version of these characters and what I’m writing is not any more important or valid than that which anyone else has.

so yes, to answer your question! I just go with the flow—both when writing out my own works and ideas, and when talking to other shippers about theirs. while i certainly have preferences and enjoy some things over others and have themes and dynamics and characterizations I return to, I leave “should” out of it. and I think I’m a more neighborly fan and a happier and better creator for it.

Man, seeing your post (rightfully) criticizing the wmmap novel and Lee Jihye is bringing me back into my wmmap fixation. I'm the one who created the A Perfect Summer Storm AU— I had deleted the manhwa sideblog in a depressive episode bc I started feeling like I wasn't reaching anyone with it... I do rue the loss of my writing, though. That AU's ship game was a clusterfuck.

Claude/Felix, Diana/Felix, one-sided Claude/Diana, Felix/Anastacius probably it's been a while (Felix does finally snap and joins Ana's resistance faction after a while), Athykiel, Jen/OC, Lucas ending up raised by Jen and her husband and his love interest ends up being Athykiel's child, uhhhh who else is left, OH Diana and her... not-quite lover, almost sisterly figure, it's Complicated™, a fellow dancer in the same troupe as she was, who followed her into the Ruby Palace out of love.

I also ended up creating an entire family for Jen's love interest and... yeah that was the point where I started feeling down.

Must be telepathy. A Perfect Summer Storm was probably the AU of all time that we have conceived ever. APSS, especially the Claufelidia love triangle in APSS has become part of my base AU that I often refer to in my headcanons. The ship game was truly crazy like A Midsummer Night's Dream, everyone was in love with everyone and no one. They were tormented by forbidden feelings for the person they could never have while being bound to the one that was ruining their life until one of them managed to break the cycle.

And Aiyla, Aiyla, Aiyla *sights* ...Aiyla is the character that I imprinted on immediately (Anis was my second fave ^^ I wish to learn more about Sindria and the royal foster system one day). I needed a mean lesbian that talks shit about Claude and gets away with it while also being hopelessly in love with Diana so deeply it temporary steals away her ability to think rationally and alert her to danger. (What if it's just her jealousy talking? What if she's seeing red flags where there are none, because she secretly wants to break up their relationship and keep Diana to herself? What if Diana will think that Aiyla does it because she misses being the dominant one and wants to bring their master/servant role back and starts hating her? What if she was right? For the first time in her life Aiyla is scared to speak up her mind. She finds the thought of Diana hating her unbearable. If Diana loves him, he can't be that bad, can he?). Aiyla is the Claude to Diana's Felix but she makes a noble sacrifice and in doing so she wins the battle against her own selfishness, yet she ends up alone anyway. I ask myself what her fatal flaw was.

What does she look like? Do you have a color palette for her? (I picture her with long straight black hair that goes to her waist, darker skin than Diana's, maybe smaller than Diana and wearing dresses the colours of the sun. orange and warm yellow. In my head she doesn't wear much extravagant jewelry. She prefers to wear many small pieces of chains, piercings and rings on her body over one tiara with a giant diamond in the middle and that's why Diana is often confused as the princess of Siodonna when they are outside the palace. She's modest wheras Diana is flashy, bright and loves big sparkly gem stones. Diana tends to wear a little bit too much decorations but on her it doesn't look too much.) I kinda wanna draw her now.

Historical Make Me Choose! 2. Mughal or Maurya, 8. Religion or Art. Talk About: 3, 6, 9, 15

Make me choose between the Mughal and Maurya dynasties:

This is especially grueling, because--well, luck being on my side--I want to someday write origfic historical fantasy based on both of them. So, to start with, I will take the coward's way out and say both, because they're both entertaining in different ways.

The Mughal dynasty is well-documented, which is amazing for finding out hilarious anecdotes (Hamida Banu dissing Humayun! Akbar's cheetah obsession! Jahangir's hilariously honest autobiography) as well as--reading between the lines--some pretty amazing women. The Mauryas, in contrast, are so spottily documented, we can't even be entirely sure that the Buddhist and Greek/Macedonian sources are even talking about the same events/rulers, but assuming it is so--it's a wild ride, starting with a teenager overthrowing the dominant dynasty and his line conquering most of India within two generations. From a writing standpoint, having so much left empty is a gift, leaving so much available for the imagination. And yet, I wish we knew of more ladies from that history, because what little we do get is so fascinating (Durdhara's family connections and bizarre death! Dharma who sounds steely enough to be a second Kunti! Most of Ashoka's wives, who all seem super strong-minded in their own right.)

Make me choose between studying religion and art.

Oh, religion definitely. Not that art isn't great (it is!), but religion involves so much stories, and such insight into the psychology of any given culture. I had a college instructor who argued that religion and the afterlife told you more than anything about the general optimism/worldview of a culture (ie, Mesopatamia which had erratic floods and a harsh worldview had gods who really didn't care about them; whereas ancient Egypt, with regular floods and prosperity, had an afterlife that, assuming you could get in, was one big party.) Plus, religion affects passing references (how many casual Mahabharata and Ramayana references do you see in India media? Or just in conversation?) and swear words (such that an utterance as hilarious as the word "Zounds" could be an actual profanity. Amazing.)

A historical misconception that you hate.

AHHH there are so many--the inherent classism in deciding Shakespeare couldn't actually be a dude from Stratford, but a university-educated nobleman!--but at the moment, one of the most bemusing is the claim that Mughal princesses were forbidden from marrying. I keep on running into this as fact, and...don't actually see that it has any actual basis in fact, at least not during the reigns of the six major emperors. For evidence, I present the following deep dive:

Most of the time I see this cited as "Akbar forbade princesses from marrying" so we'll start with him. Certainly Akbar's aunts and sisters were mostly married, so that's not an issue.

Of Akbar's daughters that I can find: Mahi Begum died young, so she doesn't count. Aram Banu Begum seems to have been --well, if we believe her brother Jahangir--kind of A Lot, despite being her father's favorite, so it seems likely marriage either wasn't her thing, or no one was agreeable to marry her. His other two daughters, Shakr-un-nissa and Khanum Sultan, were both recorded as having married, however, with their marriages arranged by Akbar himself.

But, hey, maybe he came to that decision later. So let's look at his granddaughters: Jahangir had plenty of daughters, and I can't find references to the marriages of all of them (or even how long they lived, for that matter)--at least one, Bahar Banu Begum was married to her cousin Tahmaras, and probably others too. Another of Akbar's granddaughters, Jahan Banu Begum (daughter of Murad) was also married to her cousin Parviz.

Of the generation following: let's put aside Shan Jahan's three daughters for now, since none of them married but i would argue they're a special case. Parviz, who I mentioned before, had one daughter Nadira Banu, who married her cousin Dara Shikoh; his brother Khusrau also had a single daughter Hoshmand, who married (you guessed it!) a cousin. The final granddaughter was Arzani begum, also granddaughter of the disgraced Nur Jahan, about whom I can't find a reputable death date, much less whether or not she was married. So--yes, for the most part, these women all ended up married cousins, but it's not strictly accurate to say they couldn't marry period.

A final note on Aurangazeb, who also gets accused of hte "prevented daughters from marrying" stance: yes, his most prominent daughter Zeb-un-nissa never married, but it certainly seems she had proposals aplenty and her father only vetoed the most prominent because he disapproved of the groom's father (who was his brother. the cousin thing, again.) Two of his other daughters did marry, with no objections recorded.

So honestly? It seems marriage wasn't forbidden by any means. And for those women who didn't--well, is it so impossible to believe that these princesses figured that a life in the imperial harem (which isn't the Orientalist boring fantasy most people imagine, but instead a city of women, with libraries! and schools! and markets! hunt! play chess and polo! From the harem, women could watch politics, or engage in trade, or create architecture, or participate in community service. By no means, it was great, but opportunities sucked all-around for anyone who wasn't a cis-male in that time, and this life must have seemed preferable....) with a loving father/brother was much better than being married to some rando. Plus, esp in the case of Shah Jahan's daughter, their mother died in childbirth, quite infamously--to me, it makes perfect psychological sense that they might all be leery of marriage/childbirth.

A historical figure you think is underrated.

Sadly, most figures from Indian history, but picking one at random: Razia Sultan! Not only awesome for being the first female Muslim ruler in Indian history, but also a really really good one--committed to public service, working for civil rights for the poor and those who didn't share her racial/religious/cultural background, and also open-minded/anti-racist enough to, at the very least, make a man of African descent her foremost advisor and friend. (I ship Razia/Yakut, and NOTP her relationship with Altunia pretty strongly, but even otherwise; she clearly respected Yakut as an equal, which says a lot about her. LOVE HER.

A historical myth/legend/rumour/story (flexible)

Oh, forget it, we're going to talk about Razia and Yakut, or at least the rumor they were romantically involved. A few words on Yakut: he was of Abyssinian ancestry, and actually came to her father's court as a slave, but was soon freed and allowed to rise up the ranks (this was very much a socially accepted Thing in the Mamluk court--more on this later--but he definitely had to face significant racism. Sure, there's no actual proof that he and Razia were involved, but--she made him her Master of the Horse (you know who else did? Elizabeth I for Robert Dudley. Just saying.); she never turned from him, even in the face of nasty rumors, and his loyalty to her meant he died in battle defending her throne; and fwiw, she didn't marry another as long as he lived. It's...questionable, too, how voluntary her marriage to Altunia was to me; certainly, being held hostage by the dude doesn't make for a great start. Now, again like Liz I/Robin Dudley, they could just have been BFFs/platonic soulmates, but if so I don't care--their dynamic is just A+ to me and I love it.

How do you think Hashirama and Madara would be in a Road to Ninja version?

I remember once reading a Hashimada fic (which I never finished RIP) that was about Madara appearing in the RTN universe and the 3 things that stucked with me were:

1.- Madara was the first Hokage (something that Madara thought was horrible when he saw his sculpted face on the Hokage mountain 🤣)

And personally I think that it would not have been like that even in the RTN universe because we didn't see his face along with the other faces of Hokages in the movie (Yeah, apparently I'm basing myself on a movie which I'm not even sure if it's canon or not, even though Kishimoto wrote it) and the RTN characters didn't seem to even know who Madara is.

2.- Hashirama having his bowlcut as an adult

And I agree with the Madara from that fanfic, it looks awful on him. Hashirama, babe, I'm sorry but the only ones who can rock that style are Guy Sensei and Rock Lee, I know you just were trying to be cool but it doesn't suite you.

3.- Tobirama was a porn writer

Instead of being a fan of forbidden jutsu and creating justus, he wrote porn novels a la Jiraiya. And I'll hold that headcanon with my dead hands.

The only other fanfic that places the founders in the RTN universe is one where the protagonist is Mito (it's an interesting one-shot that pairs her with Itama 🤔)

She was kind of a shy person 🤔? And so it was Tobirama 🤣 which I found fun.

Hashirama, as the first fanfic I mentioned, was the Tobirama of the place (saddenly Madara wasn't in this fic).

So I would like to know what are your versions of the founders (or only Hashirama and Madara if it is too much) in the RTN universe! And how do you think things would be

Hmm, RTN is an interesting concept to me but, to be honest, I don't think Konoha would exist if a lot of personalities got flipped 😂 I haven't read any RTN fics with the founders, but if you, or anyone else, have links at hand I'd love to check them out 👀

1. Madara

Here's the big one and the crux of why I don't think the village would exist. Typically I characterize Madara as an extremely responsible man who internalizes things when he shouldn't, takes himself way too seriously, is aggressive and abrasive even to people he loves sometimes, but genuinely loves the people closest too him. Reversing this would make a character that slacks off, takes no responsibility, and is completely passive in life and has fleeting attachments to others around him. Assuming he wouldn't die on the battlefield, I could see the RTN "alternate" personality coming about of Madara's being so overpowered and competent that he loses interest and distances himself from things before he can get attached and lose them.

It makes building a village very hard though. (At first I was tempted to go RTN Sasuke route and maybe RTN!Madara is a little more openly flirty than canon!Madara, but the passivity and refusal to take responsibility would be the "core" qualities for me.)

2. Hashirama

Hashirama is a bit weird because he has a lot of surface-level "conflicting" traits in canon. He is optimistic but he pushes beyond his natural attitude and uses it as a mask to hide instead of addressing his feelings. He's mischievous, likes jokes and games, and can be a bit hedonistic with his pleasure but can equally be serious when necessary and will willingly sacrifice for others around him. And simultaneously, Hashirama and Madara are connected by a shared sense of idealism but also anger. Hashirama is a very kind, but extremely angry, man. I think a RTN!Hashirama would share a kind of apathy of RTN!Madara but instead of passivity his lack of anger would manifest as cruelty. Because canon!Hashirama is angry but his anger is usually a righteous kind. I don't think RTN!Hashirama would go out of his way to be cruel, but he doesn't have the empathy of canon!Hashirama, especially to others' suffering. He enjoys fighting just a bit too much and has no qualms about killing. In his mind, he should always come first in any situation and prioritizing (or even considering) others' is effort and him going out of his way to be "nice" and the other should be thankful. Similarly if he feels any negative emotion, he won't bottle it up and swallow it down, he'll immediately address it, usually confrontationally. RTN!Hashirama is as intelligent as his canon counterpart but he doesn't suffer fools and he hates it when people underestimate him. He's pretty proud and vain, tbh.

I really don't think the above would make him the "Tobirama" of RTN verse. To me Hashirama and Tobirama have different core values and perspectives and inverting Hashirama's doesn't make it become Tobirama's, if that makes sense. This one is also wordy bc I immediately knew how RTN!Madara would be RTN!Hashirama is a bit harder to pin down. But I hope it's clear why I have doubts about the village existing...maybe if RTN!Hashirama got it in his mind as a pet project for the hell of it, that he'd be a better leader for the country and not just the Senju alone, and RTN!Madara liked the idea of no responsibility and being able to detach even further than he already was? But that's still kind of grasping for a reason.

3. Hashimada

Equally I think any Hashirama/Madara relationship would be ehhh. They definitely wouldn't have the overwhelming bond of their canon counterparts, and it could be a relationship ripe for unhappiness. The closest I can think of to making the ship work is RTN!Madara would be drawn to Hashirama's absurd level of self-confidence and able to let the casual cruelty slide off instead of getting worked up about it. In a way RTN!Hashirama is stable and predictable. If he's pretty overpowered, there's less of a chance RTN!Madara would lose him, so their relationship isn't deep but it's more or less dependable and Madara knows exactly what he's going to get. In contrast RTN!Hashirama has an audience in the form of RTN!Madara and a partner that's not going to push back against his ideas. RTN!Madara doesn't ask for much and he doesn't complain when RTN!Hashirama puts himself first. He doesn't want, or might not be capable of, the deep emotional bond their canon counterparts have. RTN!Madara wouldn't leave Konoha (if it existed) in the AU, because he doesn't really care. If someone upset RTN!Hashirama and he decided to leave to 'do it right' RTN!Madara would probably follow, maybe out of some loyalty for RTN!Hashirama but mostly because it's what's easiest.

4. Tobirama

The core of Tobirama's character to me is prioritizing logic over emotion and both a conscious and unconscious failure to realize he can't completely eliminate emotion. Tobirama loves his brother, he's curious and has a desire to find out what makes things work and is willing to bend morality to get results if it'll serve a greater good. He's very aware of the unfairness of the world but believes it's an unspoken truth of humanity and can only be mitigated through logical means, but never completely erased. He'll be the sacrificial lamb, the one that works in shadows so his brother can have his utopian dream. Despite everything, he loves his genin, the strongest bonds he has aside from Hashirama, and does try to instill in them lessons he think will help them and lead to peace and stability in the village. He's still influenced by the prejudices of his time and can never find it in him to truly forgive the Uchiha.

A RTN!Tobirama would be a man ruled by emotion. Him writing erotica all day definitely could be one way this manifests lol. But overall he's sensitive and spiritual and can't stand the idea of killing. He and RTN!Hashirama don't get along and he actively tries to avoid his brother. RTN!Tobirama has equally strong principles as canon!Tobirama, but they're pacifist in nature and while he likes his studies, he prefers to be out talking to people and learning from them first hand. He's very naive and can be easily taken advantage of and he has trouble focusing on any one thing for too long. No matter how many times this happens, he never can harden his heart or be overly suspicious of others. RTN!Tobirama would most likely be the one support peace in this AU. He embraces the Uchiha and all the Senjus past enemies with open arms, almost to a foolish degree. It'd be a bad idea if he became hokage in this AU because he's a terrible negotiator and has a bad people-pleasing streak and struggles with long-term tactics. With the exception of RTN!Hashirama, who he considers an aberration who doesn't have a soul, humans at their core all have good intentions at heart.

5. Mito

I characterize Mito as a very level-headed woman. Her marriage to Hashirama is political in nature but they grow to be good friends and she never expected to fall in love and she's glad Hashirama didn't want a traditional wife. Mito is devoted to her community work (she works hands-on with people in the village), she seeks out connections with others and, despite the distance, remains close with her family in Uzushio, constantly writing them letters. She's spiritual and follows the Uzumakis' beliefs (not gonna list this OoT spoiler lol) and studies fuinjutsu in her spare time, something she's done since she was a child. She is willing to sacrifice if it meant protecting something she considered greater than herself, much to her own personal detriment. She loves and is proud of her children and grandchildren, but if she had a choice, she would have chosen to remain childless, she finds her true calling elsewhere.

RTN!Mito, similarly to RTN!Tobirama, is ruled by emotions. She dreams of one day making a good marriage for herself and centers romance and being a mother as her ideal life, but she's extremely picky when it comes picking the perfect husband. RTN!Mito knows how much she's worth and she refuses to settle and will not even entertain the idea of an arranged marriage. She has a hard time forming long-lasting, deep bonds with other people and views starting her own family as the solution to this problem. At times she can be a bit absent-minded and unintentionally selfish, but she's not actively malicious. She blusters a lot and depending on the situation can come off as cold and uncaring, but it's only to hide the depth of her true feelings and loneliness. In this AU she would absolutely refuse to marriage RTN!Hashirama. Nothing on hell or earth, could make her change her mind.

Mito is such a blank-slate character it feels like writing an oc more than a canon character, tbh. And this is something I don't see brought up a lot but a "heart full of love" to combat the kyuubi's hatred to me has never been exclusive to romantic or familial (to children) love. *cough* I want a complex female character who's not vilified for not wanting to have children and/or regretting having them *cough* Mito's "love" was for the people of Konoha and Uzushio. My personal headcanon regarding her and Hashirama's child (I don't think she had more than one) was that she was dedicated to her son, but quickly realized being a mother wasn't her dream or something she even actively liked. The kid was well-cared for and she was dutiful towards him, but Hashirama was the parent that loved and embraced him with his whole heart and it led to some tension between Mito and her son as the kid could tell the difference and neither of them were "wrong" to feel the way they did. This is why Tsunade was shown with Hashirama instead of Mito, he was a lot more present in her life when she was young (instead of Kishi just not having made Mito as a character yet). But after Hashirama and Tsunade's dad died (and then Nawaki), she and Mito grew close but it was definitely more of a friendship or student/mentor relationship rather than a traditional grandmother/granddaughter relationship but both were satisfied with it and loved eachother. Likewise I didn't want RTN!Mito's characterization to be shallow and hit misogynistic undertones with her being an "opposite" to Mito's calm, level-headed, focused on her work/passions characterization.

6. Closing thoughts

#1: Wow this got long #2: I feel conflicted about RTN because it seemed to flip surface-level characteristics instead of deep characterizations, and ignored flaws altogether. The ones above, esp. Hashirama and Madara's, are kind of dark in a way? But that's the only way it makes sense to me...Gai and Lee caring about style and being stylish is a funny joke but if you were to actually poke and prod and say their personalities were inverted, neither of them would be top-notch ninja as we know...unless I'm just completely misremembering RTN because I realize it's been years since I saw it lol. Anyway, hope this was entertaining!
