Also it’s not just tv; it’s movies too I think. Live action American sci-fi/action movies to be specific. I can only think of a couple made since streaming got big that I felt like I actually knew who the characters were, and liked them, and felt like they actually cared about each other. Other genres have this problem too (comedy comes to mind), but none so extreme as in action and sci-fi. Feels like lately it’s all just rewrites of the same script but with different set dressing and they forget that you also have to have characters, not just a half a concept and a tired plot with cgi sprinkles.
I know the characters’ names and maybe a motive if I’m lucky and that’s it. Then one of em dies or is kidnapped or whatever and the other characters are so heartbroken and like… did they even know each other? Cause they met like a day ago and haven’t had a single conversation longer than a couple minutes, and they only talked about Plot Things.
There are some standouts obviously, The Equaliser series comes to mind, but it’s the exception, not the norm
I don't know what those '90s sci Fi TV writers were putting in their shows but I wish they'd start doing it again
#I don’t really watch a ton of tv#but I rewatch shows A LOT#mainly ones from the 2000’s and 2010’s#ATLA and The Librarians are my favs but I also rewatch Castle and the Ziva seasons of NCIS a lot#and the latter two tend not to have filler episodes per day but they do have eps that focus more on the B-plots compared to usual#but like…. I’ve *tried* to get into more modern shows#trust me I TRIED#but they’re just so fucking serious about everything#it makes it hard to like any of the characters#like okay but when are you gonna tell me about yourself#oh nooo they have a tragic backstory and/or a job#cool but what do you do for fun? what Str your hobbies? what are you like when the world isn’t ending?#and for the love of GOD just fucking talk to someone about something that isn’t plotty#character A will be kidnapped and character B reacts like someone killed a dog in front of them#and I’m sitting there like ‘since when are you friends????’#I think that anime does a better job at capturing what used to make tv fun and good and enjoyable#while still having more variety in length#for example: Sk8 the infinity is short enough to watch in one sitting and still get groceries the same day#toilet bound hanako kun is a bit longer but still short#my hero academia is long#one piece is scary and probably a bigger file size than most video games in its entirety#the first two examples are also things I rewatch constantly (BNHA used to be but lately I’ve been not as obsessed)#and I’d like to say that movies aren’t exempt from this problem either#one could argue that the length makes it hard to flesh out relationships while still having a strong plot and I’d like to raise you:#animation.#some examples of movies that make me believe these people are friends:#rise of the guardians; SpiderMan: spiderverse (both movies); all the how to train your dragon movies; and more#but I’d be hard pressed to list many live action American movies off the top of my head; especially any made after streaming got popular#like yes there are a lot but compared to the vast number of movies being made?#especially action and sci-fi movies

I’ve been seeing a few folks complain about people writing hcs of DC characters with ooc song preferences, which it’s not that serious. But it gives me an excuse to show off my DC character playlists.
I initially created them as I saw a lot of playlists for Bruce & Jason with just a lot of dad rock.
Which, fair. Not everyone’s into metal.
But since I know it’s not an easy genre to get into, if you want inspiration, feel free to check out these playlists!
My one main rule for making playlists is that a majority, if not all, of the songs need to be in a genre I think the character would listen to based on their canon music taste. This is regardless whether or not it’s a genre I like. I try my best to find fun songs regardless of my personal preference.
The Playlists:
Batman: various genres of metal. I tried to go for more Doom Metal(slow & repetitive vs thrash’s blast beats and fast guitar) but there’s more than one genre of metal that’s characterized by slower instrumentals & I can’t keep up with all the names so it varies. Dad metal. Made sure that there was a sprinkle of Black Metal too (mainly bc I think it’s funny. If you’ve never listened to black metal, it sounds like you chucked the vocalist in a grinder at high speeds then proceeded to mix your instruments & your vocals the worst you could possibly make it. It’s nearly incomprehensible and it’s Perfect for Bruce.)
Bruce Wayne: a touch of old school doom metal, a sprinkle of black metal as you can write a Batman story without Bruce Wayne but not a Bruce Wayne story without Batman. A more chill version of the Batman playlist that I think Bruce would jam out to as not everyone’s into metal and I wanted to give people another option that didn’t have as heavy stuff in it.
Tim Drake: Mostly time accurate with 90s-2010’s punk rock & alt rock influences all the way through with a touch of metal to show his connection to Bruce & a few other off genre songs that represent his YJ98 pals. I tried my best to include as many bands as I could find that he canonically enjoyed as well.
Jason Todd: Jason was introduced in the 80s & is a canonical metalhead, so I think he’d listen to a combination of 80s dad metal, death metal (come on, it’s just too perfect of a genre name to pass up), thrash, & a little black metal (the genre I assigned to Batman).
Clark Kent: Dad metal. He canonically listens to Metallica post-crisis so I just gave him my dad’s taste in music lmao. Made sure to add a few satire ones because Clark is an little shit and would very much enjoy satire songs. Unfortunately, I genuinely could not get my Spotify recs to give me decent country music. I tried. It only gave me modern mainstream artists and after a month of trying to find good pre 2000’s country, I just gave up. So it’s mainly metal:(
If any of y’all want to send me 80s-2000’s country recs, that would be very kind of y’all. (the type of country music ma & pa kent would listen to that Clark would have grown up with)
Kon-El: is full of songs that are, well, time accurate to his original run. Ranging from 1969-2002 [the year his solo run was canceled], this playlist not only has songs he could have theoretically picked up in a record shop or blasted on a boom box during the day but is also full of bands he canonically listens to! This playlist is chalk full of Kon’s canonical alt rock & metal music taste as well as rock and proto-metal hits of the time!
Bart Allen: to be clear, Bart wouldn’t listen to any of these as music is just too slow for him. These are songs that relate to Bart or songs that represent his connections to his friends with no specific genre as I didn’t just want to have playlists full of nothing but metal. (Although I think he’d really like metal concerts as he’d probably enjoy the feeling of the heavy base resonate in his chest.)
#dc#batman#bruce wayne#clark kent#superman#jason todd#tim drake#red robin#bart allen#impulse dc#kon el#red hood#bones playlists#bones speaks#my only rule with sharing these is that they needed to be over an hour long. almost all my other ones were like- 34 minutes long#so I skipped those bc I have sooo many m

I've seen it all - Rating all adaptations of Cherry Magic ✩
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚
Okay, so I tried to hunt down every adaptation of Cherry Magic! Thirty Years Of Virginity Can Make You A Wizard?! and watched them all.....like the chronically online loser expert I am.
THIS HAS SOME SPOILERS.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ Ratings:
[If I missed any adaptation lmk and I'll watch it and rate it!]
So here are my ratings (in the order in which I watched/read them):
Manga (The original source material, 2018) [6/10]
Thai drama (2023-2024) [9/10]
Japanese drama (2020) [8/10]
Anime (2024) [7/10]
Japanese Movie (2022) [note: this was a sequel to the J-drama]
Chinese Radio Drama (2019) [8/10]
Important note: I'm not sure if the radio drama and the drama CD are the same thing, just in case I'm going to separate the two. I couldn't find the OG Japanese drama CD with English subs anywhere so if any one knows where to find it then lmk. Not paying 20 bucks because I am below the poverty level (fully embodying the college student aesthetic <3).
: ̗̀➛ The Manga (2018)
My favorite volume cover <3
→ General thoughts:
This might be a little dumb but honestly, I had no idea that this manga was pretty recent. I thought that this was an older 2000's manga. I only found out when I looked up the production year for this blog post LMFAO.
Building on that, the art style is fairly unique and a breath of fresh air from the typical late 2010s manga art style. It definitely gave me nostalgia—but with less secondhand embarrassment. Also my favorite part is MC's emo bangs...when he's an office worker.
I found it fun how they didn't start off the series by glazing the male lead and his achievements (which was done in almost every other version.). This approach made the male lead a lot more approachable in my opinion and lessened the gap between the two.
The manga at the very start is extremely focused on the two main characters. They don't really introduce or highlight other characters until later on. (most notably Fujisaki and with the exception of MC's bestie). Manga is also pretty fast-paced in comparison to the other adaptations in my opinion. This is mainly because doesn't really spend a lot of time building up tension or introducing the characters. If anything it feels like the mangaka was going through every arc/major character interaction as if they were bullet points. You can also argue that the other adaptations are slow-paced in comparison to the manga, but in this household the majority rules.
Not a lot of focus on visual elements (unless it's to show emotion). The background is pretty basic and kept to a minimum which helps keep the focus on the relationship between MC and ML.
At the very start, the focus is put more on the awkwardness between the two characters. It's really light-hearted and doesn't particularly hold any strong tension or emotion. I like that because technically speaking the two of them are experiencing something new, I'm TIREDDD of seeing a character fall in love for the first time ever yet miraculously be an expert at it. The awkwardness of a first love and the inexperience that comes with it is a breath of fresh air when put into the context of two adults.
One thing that I really liked about the manga (and the series in general) is how the MC talks about the ethics of his mind-reading ability and actually feels guilty about taking advantage of it. I appreciate how he also comes clean to the ML. The ethics of these abilities, especially mind reading, is so interesting to me, especially considering how it's usually glossed over.
Also...I really appreciate how the MC doesn't look like a 16-year-old twink. He looks his age, a rare sight nowadays.
The perspective of the male lead is shown pretty early on. There isn't a lot of build-up for the alternate perspective. It felt pretty underwhelming when the ML revealed why he fell in love with MC. In my opinion, it failed to draw out strong emotion from the reader. The part where the male lead gets borderline sexually harassed at work also fell flat. I read it and thought "ok...well...that just happened" and quickly moved on.
[The flat delivery of the more emotional and "heavier" scenes is a consistent ick of mine. The manga does an amazing job of communicating the awkward and comedic properties of the series but completely fails at drawing out heavier emotions from the reader. This could just be a me thing though. I blame this fact on the lack of proper build-up and transitions. The switch between emotions happens too quickly, and the manga lacks proper transition panels, making character interactions seem inorganic. The series generally capitalizes on the "out of pocket" aspect of the character's thoughts and emotions. Everything is so random and unexpected which is what makes it funny and interesting, this however makes love confessions and more emotional scenes fall flat because, in the context of the series, these scenes are NOT meant to be comedic. Trying to blend serious and funny is generally difficult and something that a lot of mangakas struggle with. ]
Anyway, the ML's perspective is always a treat. Just a poorly built-up one. My man is also a whole green forest, I'm so happy that he didn't end up forcing himself on MC and instead respected his boundaries.
One thing that I noticed while re-reading the manga is how expressive the characters are, especially the male lead (finally out of cold aloof male lead jail). His awkward wink was so adorable tbh, a funny contrast to his extremely horny thoughts.
“But Mimi, isn't this contradictory? you *JUST* said that the manga suffers from sung jinwoo syndrome (A severe lack of emotional build-up which leads to extremely flat emotional scenes)!" Before you crucify me allow me to elaborate....
It’s simple, deeper emotions generally require more build-up, especially emotions (and emotional themes) that deviate from the main genre. Shyness, awkwardness, happiness, etc are all naturally a part of the traditional romcom slice-of-life genre. If the main emotion(s) that the reader gets across is light-hearted then the story naturally builds up to it and is something that the reader expects so they come into it prepared to feel said emotions. If you try to introduce an emotion such as sadness in this context then naturally you would need to properly build it up in order for the reader to properly feel and process it since it isn't expected (Even things done for 'shock' value still need appropriate build-up, it would just be done properly.). The characters here are very expressive in terms of emotions, but character expressiveness doesn't necessarily carry along to the reader.
I also love the side couple. Their mutual love for the cat is the highlight of the entire series tbh. ITS SO CUTE.
Anyway, to save you the pain of me ranting about the side couple ima make it short and sweet (look at how nice I am....I might make a separate post just to have a yap fest about them). The build-up towards their relationship was so well-written (dare I say even more than the main couple?). I'm so happy that they got their own happy ending.

6/10
Honestly, this rating was a tough one for me to give because on one hand, the manga excelled in many ways and this is the original source material so it felt weird to give it a rating lower than its adaptations. However, I have quite a bit of reasons for my ratings, all of which were mentioned throughout the previous section but I'll summarize.
The manga left a lot to be desired when it tried to communicate deeper feelings, the characters felt awkward and the interactions felt really inorganic and flat during the "emotional" scenes. I don't really think it's an issue with the art style itself but rather an issue with the panel handling and management. There weren't a lot of transitional panels that helped strengthen the main emotional panels. I don't know if that makes sense because I don't really know the proper terminology but I hope that gets my point across. This is honestly a big thing because this is a romance slice-of-life manga where the main appeal and point of it is the emotions and the interactions between the characters. It's a very character-focused genre, and in this case where world-building is near nonexistent all the pressure falls on making sure that the two leads have smooth interactions. Which I feel like it didn't meet.
: ̗̀➛ Thai Drama (2023-2024)
Best Cherry Magic promotional picture in my very humble opinion.
→ General thoughts
This adaptation establishes really quickly the difference between MC's and ML's positions at the company. Not only does it establish this fact pretty early on but it also reinforces it quite a bit.
MC's relationships with those around him are a lot stronger than in any other adaptation. He also seems more well-liked and more socially active in his workplace. The intern is introduced pretty early on which is something that I appreciate. The birthday party was SO CUTE OMG. It was so funny and adorbs to see MC awkwardly giving ML a piece of birthday cake even though they never really interacted much till that point. Also, it helped establish a stronger bond between MC and Fujisaki (since she was a part of this small birthday celebration).
There is also the addition of Mrs. Cupid (I forgot her name so that will be the name that I'll use for her, also I think that this was a cultural addition) was pretty interesting. Her role as a mentor/mother figure to MC helped show that he isn't some reclusive hated loser in his workplace.
There's a LOT of emphasis on the relationships between characters in the workplace, which is a notable change when comparing it to other adaptations. It could be a cultural thing? This is my first Thai drama and delve into Thai media so I could be wrong (please don't beat me up). MC here is way more social. The intern is a lot more relevant here and is the reason why MC had to stay overtime.
The ML here is SO MUCH MORE awkward because the series establishes the difference between their positions pretty early on. It makes the difference between how he acts for the company (super put together and cool) and how he acts in front of MC (eagerly & shyly asking him about getting ice cream after the thank-you dinner) so CUTE. This is also something that differs from other adaptations because in the others they weren't able to choose where to eat.
The personality of Tsuge was so different it gave me whiplash. Like a complete 180. He gives off more playful and childish vibes here, starkly contrasting his quiet and aloof OG persona. He's also a lot more straightforward and bossy LMAO.
This and the rest of the adaptations have an advantage. They can use auditory elements to bring emotion to the scenes which I think is something that helps exaggerate events. For example, when ML was asking MC about the thank-you dinner, MC was listening to his thoughts and was very awkward. The typing heard in the background and the lack of background music help bring the scene to life by 1. making it look even more awkward since both ML and MC stay silent for extended periods of time and 2. Reinforcing the comedic office sitcom feeling (not genre because technically this isn't a sitcom).
There was also this arc of the fake boyfriend trope where MC was egged on to be the fake BF of Fujisaki. Honestly, this adaptation brought more personality and life to Fujisaki as a character and employee. The appearance of her shitty ex was an interesting bonus and helped deepen her character.
Honestly, a lot of scenes here changed, it would take me a lot of time to sit down and break down every scene change individually. I have to say that all the changes changed how the series felt and how the relationship between the characters came across. One thing that I have to mention is that not only have a lot of scenes changed but a lot of things are out of order. I'm not really complaining though because it didn't really stick out to me as nonsensical when watching, it made sense why they made the changes and honestly, I support some of it. I'm mildly upset that the scene where the voucher was expired and this ML had to pay was cut off, but other than that no major complaints.
The misunderstanding also dragged on for a lot longer & the way he dramatically passed out??? hello??? It strays off from the original more and more every episode. It feels like I'm watching a different show.
I'm really happy that they delayed the ML's POV. The build-up here was a lot more intense than the original. I really liked how they portrayed the dismissal of ML's hard work and preferences in favor of his looks, kind of a "stay in your own lane and use your pretty face" thing. The portrayal of the sexual harassment towards ML was also a lot smoother, more emotionally intense, and heavier here, a lot more emotional. These changes made the scene between ML and MC a lot more special in my opinion, and made me feel a lot of sympathy towards the ML. He also actually cried here and the scene was a lot more emotional. This also applies to when ML went into detail on why he fell in love with MC, it was really touching. The problem of the lackluster emotional scenes in the original was fixed here.
The side couple also faced a lot of changes, all of which were welcome in my opinion. The series went into a lot more detail between the two from the start, and the personality of Minato was a lot nicer here too. The side couple felt a lot more dynamic and human.
There were a lot of scenes between Fujisaki and Rokkaku, which was interesting, to say the least. I don't know how I felt about that, it wasn't bad, just weird considering the original.
→ Rating ✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩
9/10
I think that the experience of watching this is extremely different from reading the original material. If we’re accounting for accuracy, this series would lose a lot of points, however if you're just watching this for fun the experience is extremely enjoyable.
I really like how this version communicates the character dynamic between the male lead and the main character. My only ick is that it made the main character a lot more popular than he originally was, thus making the male lead have a crush on him seem less surprising in a way? Also in a way that took away the funny, "I hate my shitty cooperate job and all my co-workers" feeling.
: ̗̀➛ Japanese Drama & Movie (2024)
Bunching them together because the movie is a sequel to the drama
→ General thoughts
The J-drama shows you more aspects of the MC's life and general personality before he got his power. In a way, it showed how lonely he is (via the fact that only his mom and long-time friend greeted him on his birthday).
The drama introduced a lot of characters at the beginning, and it made MC's friend, Tsuge, extremely relevant early on. This part makes the viewer more invested in the side couple and the side stories involving them a lot sooner.
Honestly, though, my favorite part is the little shop owner. In the other versions the place where he gets his lunch is at a convenience store and the only relevant interaction is when he touches the cashier's hand and she starts tweaking over how gross it is. Seeing the shopkeeper side-eye him for always ordering double mayo was really funny to me, and in a way, it added more personality to the world around him and the interactions that he has outside of the main plot (this is something to note because the J-drama shows a LOT of his time outside of the office, something that stands out when comparing it to other adaptations).
The addition of the asshole co-worker was an interesting addition/change from the original. In the OG, MC was the boss who was being an asshat, which is why he stayed overtime, in the case of the J-drama it was actually his co-worker and it was MC who offered to take over the assignment. This change made MC look like a pushover & it followed regular office comedy plots.
Many micro-interactions were also added, which added more depth to their relationship. My favorite example was how the drama expanded on how the MC was touched by ML giving him the scarf (because during that scene MC heard ML's thoughts about how mistreated MC is and how much he appreciates him :3). I also love how it revealed that ML specifically made a traditional Japanese breakfast because he knew that MC would like it. It showed how much ML really cared about MC and how he kept track of his likes and dislikes even without interacting with him a lot.
I also love how ML defended MC when asshole co-worker berated him for 'being unreliable'. He was so passive-aggressive it was so cool honestly. Also for some reason, Rokkaku was shown to be around ML a lot more often and was shown a lot earlier (though he didn't outwardly have major parts till later). Also here MC was given more overtime work, this time because ML heard about it when MC was first given the task he immediately was able to compile data and help MC from the get-go. I really liked this small change because ML improved MC's work-life quality, which was pretty shit. Also here there was no dinner coupon, instead MC did it of his own free will (went to ML running to ask him to get dinner with him, though he was inspired by his co-worker bringing it up first).
Similar to the Thai drama, their dinner date got interrupted by a company dinner :(. Though they never had a chance to be 1 on 1 here which made me (and the ML) sad.
For some reason here MC never gave Rokkaku medicine? Rather it was Rokkaku who offered to go and get some for MC from the convenience store.
The biggest interactions that changed in my opinion were the interactions between MC and his friend, Tsuge. For example, instead of meeting at Tsuge's house they instead meet at a restaurant. His advice to MC was also different, telling him to ignore ML and that what matters the most is MC's feelings, contrary to the OG where Tsuge suggested that MC take advantage of ML's feelings. I feel like this small change in how Tsuge approached advising MC helped reinforce the idea that MC tends to be a pushover who puts other people's feelings above his own (since he felt the need to specifically tell MC to focus on his own feelings). He was also so iconic for telling MC to not fall in love with someone, instead, MC should just get a cat if he's lonely.
The side couple here was also introduced a lot earlier.
Although small, these additions help add more character depth to the main character which makes the experience more enjoyable IMO.
Just like the other adaptations, a lot of the ending scenes were left out, though in this case, they produced a movie to act as a sequel to the drama for the sake of including the left-out material (ML meeting MC's parents, etc). I feel like because of that the movie is a must if you truly want to get the true feel of the ending. Also, a lot of scenes were skipped or smushed together (kind of a 3-in-1 type thing).
They kept edging us with the kiss scene low-key. I'm not even a big fan of them; I just got annoyed by how I felt like a pig on a stick.

Overall, pretty lovely.
I found it pretty interesting how they added things and expanded on pre-existing scenes while simultaneously skipping over and combining original material. I don't really understand why they picked certain scenes over others, well to a certain degree I kind of do but at the same time, there was tons of original material...why add/expand on things unnecessarily when you already have long and expanded upon scenes.
Rokakku's interactions with MC changed a ton here, which is mildly sad.
I like the added mico interactions outside of MC's workplace.
: ̗̀➛ Anime (2024)
→ General thoughts
Out of every adaptation this stayed the closest to the original material. Honestly writing the analysis for the anime was really hard for me because there really isn't much for me to say. It fixed a big issue that was in the manga, and that is the lack of proper panel transition. The reason why I'm mentioning this point here rather than under any other adaptation is because this stayed the most loyal to the original material.
There really weren't any big changes so there isn't much to comment on. However, I set up a split screen between the anime and manga JUST so I could analyze things piece by piece and this is what I found:
After the conversation with Tsuge, it shows MC's walk home his contemplation about this whole thing, and his reaction to his friend being a virgin too. There are also some micro-interactions between the two (MC & ML) that were added, but nothing too different for me to specifically point out.
The scene with the cake guy was slightly changed here in the anime. The anime added an interaction between MC, Fujisaki, the boss, and other employees who were trying to find out what happened to cause the cake guy to get mad at ML prior to MC officially stepping in, something that didn't really happen in the manga. On that note, there were a lot of added micro-interactions between MC and Fujisaki.
A minor change that could simply be attributed to translation is that in manga MC said that he didn't hate the kiss while in the anime he said that it didn't bother him, just a small detail that made me a little sad TT.
There are some minor setting changes here and there, for example, MC originally gave Rokkaku medicine on the bus because he was car sick, in the anime he gave him medicine during karaoke because he was having stomach problems due to being drunk.
Dare I say that I HATED Rokkaku's voice actor, it's the same sound someone makes when they're nose is stuffy/they're not breathing through their nose. It got on my nerves. On a similar note, I feel like this shows how important voice actors are. I'm used to Rokakku having a younger, playful, and generally softer voice which gave him a carefree "he was the popular easy to get along with guy in high school". In the anime though because of his voice actor, his personality came off as "The really simple-minded comedic relief guy that secretly has lore". So interesting to see how even the smallest changes can completely change the impression of a character!
I kinda wish that the hot springs scene remained intact instead of it getting changed into a sauna because the concept of "Water conducting intense thoughts" is really funny. Though it was changed to steam to better fit the setting, I feel like it was an extremely unnecessary change.
The sexual harassment scene stayed really close to the manga but with greater emotional impact, specifically his facial expressions. Though the background music didn't really match the seriousness of the scene, his facial expressions and the general mood of what he was conveying (Since he was talking about how his character and hard work are reduced to the fact that he is good-looking), it's still a marginal improvement. This made me upset because the anime could've utilized more appropriate background music or just not add it at all. My ick with the background music was quickly resolved with the following scene where MC consoles ML after the whole ordeal. This makes me really happy because it, for the most part, achieved what the manga failed to do. Also, I find it funny here how ML specifically thought that the MC is a pushover because he lacks tact.
Flashback/ML's POV also came later than the Manga, thankfully a running theme between all adaptations. The selfie scene also changed, it was a lot less 'appropriate' here (not in a to the reader way but in a context way) because in the original they took the selfie on a company trip while here they took the picture in a random park.
The side couple comes here a lot later too, I think slightly later than the manga, which is weird but it also makes sense and flowed well here. I don't have much to complain about, I did like their interactions here a lot more though. I should also note that their relationship is slightly faster-paced than other adaptations.
The sound effects and OST were awesome though and really helped reinforce the emotional aspects of scenes. This also helped with the abrupt emotional changes in the scenes.
I do have to say that I had very high hopes for the anime because out of every adaptation, this has the most freedom in terms of properly communicating character dynamics and plot points. It can use a range of effects without looking out of place or weird because this is animated. This did NOT disappoint thankfully.

Oof, this was a hard one to rate, I saved it for last.
I don't know, out of every adaptation this was easily my favorite, but lets be honest...there are quite a bit of issues. I think that the main one is the background music for the sexual harassment scene.
"Mimi, why do you care so much about it?" Well, it's not necessarily because sexual harassment is a serious topic (which it is, but not the main reason why I'm so bothered), rather it's mainly because the male lead was venting about how all of his hard work is dismissed just because "he's pretty". I feel like this was a perfect example that encapsulated his main complaint about his workplace and the main reason why MC's actions really touched him. It's really important to his character so seeing the scene not be portrayed properly really grinds my nerves.
: ̗̀➛ Chinese Radio Drama (2019)
→ General thoughts
THIS WAS SO DIFFERENT. Take a seat because a yap fest is about to take place.
To be honest, this is my first time listening to a Radio Drama (yes a lot of first times here, I'm a sad media virgin, all I do is read shitty manhwa, manhua, manga & fanfiction and read the occasional web novel). I didn't know what to expect since the medium is pretty limited since the plot can only be conveyed through voices. This did not disappoint. The voice actors are super expressive and effectively communicate character emotions.
This starts off strong with an appointment with a psychiatrist. MC really thought he was going insane and honestly? I too would shove myself in a psychiatrist's office the second I started hearing people's thoughts. I loved this approach, super realistic. My usual ick of characters randomly manifesting powers in an otherwise non-fantasy setting is how they immediately accept it and adapt to it.
The first change is how he finds out about his ability, by far this is my favorite (touching a co-worker and hearing her cuss out your fellow employees and boss). We unfortunately didn't escape the ML glazing session (yes I get it he's so alpha in the company,,,,I heard the same sentence 10 times already from 10 different sources my brain is FRIED). GOOD NEWS though because MC also got a mini glazing session...ha you thought...the sec mc touched his boss he got brought back to reality (heard a bunch of insults about how dull he is).
The drama CD really REALLY enforces the fact that MC isn't liked by his fellow coworkers, for some reason everyone and their moms take pleasure in insulting him, which is my biggest fear. Imagine you develop the ability to hear people's thoughts only to find out that half of your workplace hates your guts? I'd immediately cease my oxygen dependence.
Also, we're back with the shitty co-worker. Honestly, it's hard for me to tell what is going on because many names changed which would've been fine if the OG plot was completely preserved except it's not. I don't have visual clues so I'm kinda tweaking.
Anyway, now on to the major plot changes:
Rokkaku is now a poor intern getting pulled into random tasks via MC's co-worker friend. For some reason, most adaptations tend to mess around with Rokkaku's character. Also, the elevator scene slightly changed, instead of MC trying to guess ML's crush he immediately reminded himself that he's experiencing a hallucination (which happens quite frequently throughout the radio drama. I think that I can safely attribute this change to the fact that he went to see a psychiatrist the second he noticed his newfound ability. Generally, it takes MC 10 thousand business days to come to terms with his new ability.
MC here is a lot more of a realist, not that he was particularly lacking in the realism department before. It just seems like a more prominent character trait here.
Here MC stays late because of his co-worker friend (maybe I should change his nickname to asshole #2). Also, MC here takes an obvious role in helping teach and instruct Rokkaku. We also get more character background info on Rokkau which I think is pretty interesting. Rokkaku here is a lot more responsible too. Also here instead of simply helping MC finish his work, ML instead offers to do the whole thing himself.
It takes a while for there to be any mention of his 30th birthday. The reason why MC slept over at ML's place also changed. Also I can't get over the scene where ML admits to the fact that he bought a set of PJs JUST BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THAT MC WOULD LOOK GOOD IN THEM???? No matter how many times I watch it I still find it wild LMFAOOO. Also for some reason ML undresses in from of MC and MC points out ML's muscles which is so different from the OG because originally it was because of the hot springs + MC never loudly commented on ML's physique. MC looked like a pervert LMFAO. Also, ML never mentioned that he worked out/kept up with his body for MC, so it made the scene a lot more awkward IMO. ML's house is also different, in here he has an extra bedroom while in the other adaptations, MC slept in the living room.
It was so adorable when ML came over JUST to cover MC with a quilt. Also, my guy was battling demons trying to stay a green flag.
They expanded a lot more on the BBQ scene, which was so nice! I loved seeing the two of them have a normal conversation for once, both gushing over their favorite manga. I feel like this made their relationship progression a lot smoother because in the other adaptations they never really had the opportunity to actually engage in a long and meaningful conversation. Most of the time conversations are very one-sided and awkward since MC is reading all of ML's thoughts thus decreasing the amount of naturally born conversation between the two. Not only do I like it because of their conversation but also their interaction flowed very naturally. This time ML was the one who held on to the vouchers (mildly similar to the Thai ver), thus when it was time to pay it was more so an act of responsibility rather than altruism. They also added a movie date after the BBQ, except MC dipped and ruined the whole moment.
Just like the Thai drama, it would be easier for me to list all the similarities than differences to the manga. I think that in this case, the many changes are easily justifiable because this format (radio dramas or any audio-only mediums) is really limited. Typically creators can rely on visual clues and/or descriptions to enhance character dynamics and interactions. Thus it's natural for the producers of this drama to drag out character interactions and add some to get the same feelings and character dynamics across. You can argue that audio-dependent mediums have an advantage compared to novels but there isn't a novel for cherry magic. You're adapting an audio-only drama from a written-visual medium, which is pretty different. You can easily translate written words to spoken audio but visual cues are lost to translation.
One problem...the sexual harassment scene here was portrayed very similar to the anime. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The background music wasn't as bad but cmon.....
THIS HAS FIRE OPS AND EDS. I love the songs, honestly just listen to the radio drama for the music.
→ Rating ✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩
8/10
I really liked this one, again if we're going for accuracy then this would get a low rating, but we're not yahoo!
I really liked how the characters were portrayed, their relationships, etc. I feel like this version really perfected the characters.
I kinda wished that there was more focus on his life outside of the office and that there was more character background info.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ Conclusion:
Honestly, my favorite part of doing this whole thing is seeing how culture impacts stories and adaptations. The two that changed the most details were the Thai and Chinese adaptations so it's pretty neat to see how Japanese cultural details were switched out. I think that the office worker environment and interactions between co-workers and the differences between the Japanese version, Chinese version, and Thai version are the most interesting. (yes repetitive but we're not in English class now are we?)
Every version is different, and I loved comparing and seeing how every medium communicates the story a bit differently. There are benefits and negatives to picking a specific medium, looking at Cherry Magic was an interesting case study (I know that I haven't gone into detail on how the specific medium caused changes and instead just talked about the changes but trust I was thinking about it.). I might do an analysis in the future solely focusing on that, but who knows.

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.
#cnovel#mdzs#cdrama#chinese diaspora#danmei#not a lot of jinyong wuxia shows here so people who have opinions please chime in!#whew that was more than i thought#music could do with another post#but i dont know too much about my dads music i was just a 2000s cpop nerd#also this doesnt cover movies either#please no lan qiren watching friends#this breaks me out of my immersion immediately unless there was a specific reason why shufu is watching friends#not even sure how to tag this#late 2000s you could pretty much stream and download stuff i think i did that for bbjx when it came out#even tho my parents hated The Internet i managed#feel free to add more to this in a post or tags or whatever

Fashion and Worldbuilding
Ok so like fashion is possibly one of the most important indicators of how a society is faring. If you’ve studied fashion history even a little bit, you’ll see that right away. Establishing set fashion trends and “classics” in your Worldbuilding can enhance an audience’s understand of the people who live in the world, the climate of the world, and even your main characters.
*Btw before I start, any examples below are mainly from American Fashion history, as that is what I have learnt. If you happen to have any other examples from other parts of the world, I would be thrilled to know!
First off, the four main fashion silhouettes. Before I continue, I would like to mention that these are FASHION SILHOUETTES NOT HUMAN SILHOUETTES. AND THAT PEOPLE ARE OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES. AND THAT THESE SHAPES AND SIZES CAN STILL EXIST WITH THESE FASHION TRENDS. BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLY THAT TRENDS.
Rectangle: Shoulders all the way to the hips are near the same width. An example of this would be most men’s fashion in history, but also Flappers from the 1920’s. Flappers wore straight dresses, and would sometimes even bind their chests to achieve that rectangle look.
Inverted triangle: Wide shoulders and small hips. An example of this would be the hobble dress of the 1910’s. The top of the dress is fitted nicely on the shoulders and bust, but the bottom is very small, causing the wearer to “hobble” when they walk. Another example would be shoulder pads, making the shoulders appear to be larger.
Triangle: Small shoulders and large hips. An example of this would be 1970’s fashion, with chunky shoes and flare out pants creating the illusion of larger bottoms.
Hourglass: Large shoulders and hips and small waist. An example of this would be many Victorian era dresses, where their busts would be large, their bottoms would be large, and then the corsets used to create the illusion of a smaller waist while supporting the heavy garments. Men in the 1920’s also had this silhouette, having their suit’s waists tapered in.
Establishing a popular silhouette for your world’s fashion trends is important in deciding the way the clothes will look on the people of the world. You can even make different places have different silhouettes.
Also, again, people’s body silhouettes and fashion silhouettes are different. People can wear extra pieces of clothing to achieve the “ideal silhouette” of the trends, such as corsets, shoulder pads, or breast bindings, or their clothing can be altered, such as tapered waists on coats or bell bottom jeans.
Ex; in my fictional world, there are two fashion trends: that from the humans and that from the invader aliens. The humans have rectangle silhouettes for men and hourglass silhouettes for women. The invaders have an inverted triangle silhouette.
Side note: not all persons have to follow the fashion trends. Maybe that can be a big point of their character, or that can distinct them from the rest of their society.
Another side note: There doesn’t have to be a fashion silhouette. The fashion climate in America didn’t have one silhouette that was popular in the 2000’s and 2010’s.
Next, what clothing is made of can establish how well off a specific part of your world is. How rare or hard to get the material is can indicate how rich or poor this place is, or if clothing or even non-clothing cloth often gets refurbished. Ex; One country has the highly regarded and very expensive silk in almost every garment, but on the other hand, this country’s citizens use the potato sacks as clothing because it is all they have.
The fabrics used to make garments can also go hand in hand with what clothing people wear. Ex; A country that specializes in wool from sheep may either wear a lot of wool, or they export all of it in favor of buying another type of fabric (silk, nylon, cotton, spandex, ect).
Next, are the kinds of clothes that last and the kind that are just fads. Clothing that is generally owned by everyone and transcends trends and fads are called “classics.” In the real world, That looks like plain color t-shirts, nice jeans, plain color jackets, nice white shirts, and plain shoes. A trend or fad, on the other hand, are fashion that doesn’t tend to stick around. This is our hobble dresses, our big chunky shoes, our bold color prints, our shoulder pads, Ect ect. If it didn’t last in fashion for more than a decade, then it isn’t a classic.
What do the classics and fads look like in your world? Do they stay consistent throughout it or do they change from place to place?
Next, the outcasts. Is there a group of people who go against the grain of what’s trendy? Some examples of outcasts could be women who wear men’s clothing and vise versa, punks who live in an area where classics are more treasured, or even just a person who wears clothing that gives them a different silhouette than the current popular style.
This can also bleed into character creation as well. Does your character follow fashion trends or do they do their own thing, and if they do their own thing, why?
Ex; in my fictional world, I have multiple women who wear clothing that makes them look rectangle when the fashion trend for ladies is hourglass. They do this to appear “like” a “man,” or in better words, in hopes to appear grittier and stronger since in this world, there is much sexism in the story I’m trying to tell.
Finally, color plays a big role. Is there a specific color or color scheme that is popular?
Ex; Red lipstick, the bold patterns of the 1970’s
Final notes:
-All of these are suggestions. Not all of them have to be used. There doesn’t have to be a popular color or silhouette!
-Having said that, knowing what kind of trends your world has can greatly impact how lived in your world feels.
-Celebrities/well known figures tend to create fashion trends. There are always exceptions to the rules, but a lot of the time trends start from these people important to the world in some way. (I didn’t know where to put this so. Here it goes!)
Again, if anyone has any additional information (especially examples of trends of fashion from different parts of the world!!) I would be OVER THE MOON grateful! Hope this helped!
#worldbuilding#world building#writing tips#art tips#fashion#sorry guys. I’ve been holding in all this for days now#I’ve been thinking about it…i need it to get OUT#this is an infodump disguised as helpful worldbuidling tips 🤫

mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 3: From 2002 to 2010
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 4: From 2014 to 2017 Part 5: From 2018 to 2023
Complete list of part 2 media with extra information and some of my thoughs regarding the evolution of Mordred’s role is under cut.
In part 2 I talked a bit about how in movie adaptations (since Excalibur 1981) Morgause disappears and Morgana takes her role as Mordred's mother. Here I wanted to note how we actually have a very big gap of Mordred movies in the 2000s. Most of the media in this video are recordings of musicals or opera or tv shows.
Another small point is that we have here the second instance of Mordred in a romantic relationship (the first instance being Mordred and his lady in "Sword of Lancelot") in Merlin BBC, where his love for Kara is a central part of his character development. The third and only other instance will be in a webseries (in part 4!).
2002 Merlin the Return: Craig Sheffer plays an over the top extremely evil Mordred in this tv movie. He is still Morgana's son, and he is the main antagonist (and a wizard). The movie is - an experience. It mainly focus on modern day characters meeting time travelling Arthur and Merlin.
2003 Gary Hughes' album "Once and future king": The song is "The Hard Way", one of the two songs sung by Mordred (the other being "Demon Down"). This album (divided in two parts) has a total of 20 songs sung by different artists each interpreting an arthurian character. It is an interesting narrative musical that follows the rise and fall of Arthur. We do not know if Mordred is Arthur's son.
2003 recording of Albeniz's "Merlin" opera: This is a 1902 opera that is rarely performed nowadays. This recording is the only available dvd of it, and Mordred (a baritone) is played by Àngel Òdena. Mordred is the main antagonist alongside his mother Morgana.
2003 Camelot, Papermill Playhouse: I was lucky enough to have some bootlegs videos of Camelot performances so I decided to put them as well. It is pretty interesting to see how Mordred's "The Seven Deadly Virtues" and "Fie on Goodness!" gets campier, more comedici and sillier! Here Mordred is played by Barrett Foa.
2005 Camelot, Bad Hersfeld (Germany): Another recording of the Broadway musical, here fully translated in German! This is the website of the open air event. Unfortunately I could not find the name of the actor.
2008 Camelot (Live from Lincoln Center): Live from Lincoln Center used to be a tv series dedicated to filming and sharing musicals and performances. This is thus another Camelot musical adaptation. Bobby Steggert (who is now a therapist!!) played an over the top, super-campy, queer coded Mordred! This is probably the first time we have a Mordred that is so obviously queer coded in his presentation.
2008 Merlin (BBC): This 5 seasons tv show was extremely popular, so much it led to the rise of a bunch of arthurian tv movies that were probably trying to ride "Merlin"'s popularity. The show is episodic-like, slightly comedic, and focuses on Merlin and Arthur. Mordred appears as a child (not related to Arthur or Morgana) at the end of Season 1 and he was portrayed by Asa Butterfield (not in video). Then he returned as an adult in Season 5, potrayed by Alexander Vlahos. This is another instance of a sympathetic Mordred. While he ends up being a villain and finding an alliance with Morgana, the show makes a point to explain his reasons. At this point this is the second time we see a sympathetic (but still villanous) Mordred on tv. Interestingly this is also the second time we see a Mordred who is in a happy romantic relationship (there are only three instances, it seems, in all media!), as Mordred is in love with a woman named Kara.
2009 Merlin and the Book of Beasts: This is a fantasy tv movie that focus on Merlin helping Arthur's daughter reclaim Camelot. It features a baffling performance from Merlin's actor (not sure what the director or the actor himself was thinking), and a villain called Arkadian who is supposed to be Mordred and Arthur's son. Here we go back to the role of extremely evil Mordred, and Arkadian also kidnaps his half-sister to marry her and continue the Pendragon dynasty. Mordred (Arkadian) is played by Jim Thorburn.
2010 Avalon High: This is a tv Disney channel movie adaptation of Meg Cabot's novel by the same title. The movie butchers the main story of the novel and tries to surprise its viewers by changing the character's arthurian selves. The protagonist Allie is now King Arthur's reincarnation (instead of the Lady of the Lake), and William (her love interest) is... unknown character instead of being King Arthur. The novel has William's half brother as Mordred, but the movie changes that and now it is the teacher (Mr. Moore) who is revealed to be Mordred, while Marco is just a misdirection. Mr. Moore is played by Steve Valentine.
2010 Merlin and Arthur the Lion King: Continuing our journey into sympathetic Mordreds, we have another one here! This movie is one in a series of tv movies/dvd movies by variation of "Arthur" and "Merlin" in the title. My personal theory is that the hope is that people would find the movie by googling for more popular media (ex. "Merlin 2008 BBC", "King Arthur 2004"). In this animated kids movie, Mordred is a kitten and one of Arthur's friends. He first works with Morgana to stop Arthur from becoming king, but then ends up deciding he does not want to betray his friend anymore. This might be one of the few iterations of a completely redeemed Mordred in movies/tv!
Extra note: 2003 is also the year Heather Dale (singer) released her album "May Queen" which has one song that in my opinion seemed to be sung by Mordred or to Mordred: "Crashing Down". Because it is not certain but only my interpretation I did not add it.
In the same album we also have "War Between Brothers" which reference to Mordred (sung by an external narrator). A previous album ("The trials of Lancelot" in 2000) also contains the famous song "Mordred's Lullaby" which is sung by Morgana to Mordred.

Sonic (Bio/Character design ramble)
Sonic's bio/ramble is here !!! This is not a drill !!!
Kudos to my sister, who took up writing Sonic's bio and commentary. She majors in Sonic Psychology, it's only right for her to continue writing, expanding on, and doing the titular character justice (because I sure can't ripp </3).
Info under the cut, as usual x
Sonic is a 25 year old influencer. He's lived in Green Hill for the majority of his life but his job and adventurous lifestyle often leads him far from home. Sonic's reason for entering the show was purely childish: a challenge. So Sonic arrives with the intent of messing around and having fun.
Sonic is free-willed and easy-going. This makes him a fun guy to be around and that's why he thrives on the Island. Given the fact he likes to have freedom... he's never tied down and struggles with commitment when it comes to love. He never stays in one spot for too long, therefore he can never stick around one person for too long. Sonic also has no type. Unlike other characters in the series or people on Love Island, Sonic gravitates to whoever he feels is giving a good energy back to him or someone he can bounce off (although he is not above basing things off physical attraction in some situations). Saying that he didn't arrive with the intent of finding love on the Island, doesn't mean he isn't genuine.
Ultimately, Sonic makes it clear that he doesn't quite know what he wants...
External design choices !! (visual appearance - incl. formation of base sim, references taken, makeup choices, fashion style... etc.)
Sonic is one of the characters I'm still not happy with and never will be because of the way the game works and my unreasonable expectations for this man. Sonic has been reworked twice in an attempt to get him perfect. When taking inspiration from the game series, Sonic took heavy inspiration from modern Sonic (Mainly the 2010's Sonic opposed to the early 2000's models.)
Sonic is the most iconic character in the series and so I wanted to do him justice by blending features of his design with the idea of him looking relatively desirable. In the first design his features relied heavily on his defining 'Sonic' features such as his pointy nose, big eyes and blue hair. His nose (in my opinion) was exaggerated when looked at front on and this was purely because of his skin overlay. His skin overlay was custom content and was the same that we used for Amy except there was one issue, it didn't work for males as it changed the way his facial features looked. As it looked fine on Amy, I thought nothing of it for Sonic, until it finally grated on me enough to change it. This is where his second design was made and thought out.
In Sonic's redesign, I gave more thought into how he looked beside other similar characters such as Shadow and Silver. As Sonic was the first to be made in the game, I didn't have the other two boys to compare him to. Now that the other boys were there to refer to, I could make sure they looked slightly similar. I decided to make their noses and mouths appear similar while keeping key things like eyes, hair and face shape unique. Sonic's eyes were kept rounded and big much like his canon design and so I wanted the eye colour to be accurate too. Sonic's eye colour is a slightly darker shade of green than Amy's and that was carried over into Sonic's design. When it came to his skin tone we had to look very closely at his Frontiers model. In a picture we looked at, we could see a slight olive undertone rather than pink. After some debate about it, we incorporated the skin tone into his redesign.
I've come to terms that I'll never be able to get Sonic right in The Sims 3, but I do like Sonic's redesign better (not to mention how proud of his side profile I am. He looks so good from side on <33). He went from looking older than 25, untrustworthy and unattractive, to looking Younger than 25, frankly cute and closer to his 'fakers', Shadow and Silver.
[ Acknowledging both designs is crucial, as a ton of screenshots have Sonic's older design in them as opposed to his newer one. And we'd rather perish than retake screenies because we altered him. I like to think it's a good display of what the design process looks like :) - bee ]
Sonic's fashion is fashion. As an influencer, he would receive a lot of branded clothes from sponsors or for product review. (This headcanon was formed from the SOAP shoes he wears in SA2). While also he'd need to keep up with fashion trends to maintain a good image. On the island, Sonic wears casual things such as sneakers (occasionally his classic red but he switches it up a bit), t-shirts, bomber jackets, jeans, cargo pants or shorts, things tend to be baggy for comfortability. Sonic also has a gold ring that he wears on his left, middle finger. This idea was not only a reference to the games and how many rings he collects, but more specifically a game where he wears a ring, Sonic and the Secret Rings.
Internal design choices !! (personality, characteristics, psychology)
I am a strong believer that Sonic is more complex than most think. He's very good at masking anything negative he's going through with a smile. A good example of this is in Sonic Frontiers. I took a lot of inspiration from Frontiers because in my opinion it is the BEST Sonic characterisation. I also took inspiration from SA2, Sonic X and many other games or media to count (Sonic's a pretty consistent character when it comes to some aspects of his personality.) In this, Sonic is a good blend of childish and mature. He tends to show his childish nature when interacting with Knuckles and Shadow or when things take a negative turn, he tries to lighten the mood with a joke to change the topic. His maturity shows when he gets fed up with people being disingenuous or rude to him and/or his friends. He also doesn't hold grudges and tends to see things that others don't. But Sonic isn't perfect because of his spontaneous actions and changes.
Sonic tends to act strangely if he feels things are getting too deep. He'll surprise everyone with an unexpected action that he can't justify himself. He cares for the people he loves, even if he doesn't know why.
Sonic tries to give people second chances when it comes to friendships and consistently tries to befriend or bring happiness to the most stubborn of people. It may be because he struggles with social cues on occasion, so he doesn't quite know when to stop sometimes.
When hurt, he places up a protective wall to try and shield himself from vulnerability. This is where Sonic shuts himself off from other people by friend-zoning or going cold in some situations. He keeps people who cause him to be vulnerable at arms length and will keep them there. So long as he can help it, anyway.
[ Except we do NOT give him that kindness. Everyone faces their problems eventually. Sonic most of all >:)) - bee ]
Fun facts / trivia :
A lot of Sonic media is included in this AU, so Sonic has 3 siblings. Sonia, Manic (triplets) and "Classic" (younger brother). This is because we thought it would be fun to add Sonia and Manic from Sonic Underground. Sonia ends up playing a big part in his arc. Classic could have been left or represented as a young version of Sonic but in the Twitter Takeovers, Classic is said to be a separate entity from Modern Sonic. And Sonic having many siblings just fitted his personality. [ I think I saw something about Classic/Modern Sonic and the dealio with them and the funky timeline, but I've forgotten what that was now. I love the idea of Brother Sonic so much to care lmao. Give him all the siblings. I trust him not to burn the house down <3 - bee ]
Sonic has ADHD. [ Yeah :) I mean- is this even a hc anymore. It's basically canon in my eyes hehe - bee ]
Sonic loves to talk and brag about his travels around the globe. Especially since he's previously visited Spagonia (home to the Sonic Love Island villa) before arriving on the show. This boy has a story for everything, and we mean EVERYTHING.

Amazing, Showstopping, Glamorous Blue Lock Headcanons That Are Definitely True Ego Told Me So #1
Inspired by a friend and I yelling about Blue Lock lately. Some of these are yours, friend. Thank you for contributing to my madness :D
Don't now if I'm gonna make a part 2 but eh? We'll see where my next fever dream takes me.
Isagi un-ironically Naruto-ran throughout middle school. He thought it made him look cool and increased his speed. One day he was full blown running across the soccer field and took a heavy nose dive- breaking it. He stopped doing it after that.
Raichi's playlist is entirely made up of early 2000's/2010's pop hits. I'm talking Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, Ariana Grande, and his queen herself- Lady Gaga. Knows all the songs and dances and performs them at 2 am in the Blue Lock cafeteria when he thinks no one's up. Has been walked in on multiple times.
Chigiri has a very specific set of bookish characters that if their name is even referenced he will throw hands. You wanna see this soft spoken shy princess swear up a storm? Drop a name. "Hey Chigiri, who's Gale Hawthorne-" "Don't you ever speak that bastard's name in my presence again."
Kunigami loves All Might from My Hero Academia. He's not at the collector level Deku is in the show but he'll quote the Number 1 Hero ("Former-" "We don't talk about the other guy, Isagi. There's only All Might"). Only Isagi knows what he's saying; everyone else has heard "Plus Ultra" but doesn't really get it.
Bachira is a fantastic artist. He gets it from his momma and it shows! He likes to draw the monster a lot, but he has drawn everyone in the room at least once. Whenever he draws his friends, they'll have little decorations associated with them. (Kuni's got a cape, Chigiri's got a tiny crown, Isagi has his own monster.)
Nagi can do the worm. He does mainly when he's already on the floor and is too lazy to stand, so he just kinda wiggles over to wherever he needs to go. No one knows where he learned it but it's absolutely hilarious to watch.
Sae speaks fluid Spanish from his time in Spain. This comes very apparent after Shidou pissed him off so badly he chewed him out in it. The mentioned man finds it really sexy, even if Sae's calling him a "Colossal hemorrhoid I have the displeasure of having stuck up my ass."
Despite his love for Horror games/movies, Rin is beyond easy to jump scare. His argument is that in those settings he's prepared to get spooked. Bachira can be as silent as the wind when he wants to be, so accidental (and a lot of times intentional) spooks are common between them. ".......Hi Rin!" "FU-!"
Chigiri is a great singer but horrifically shy about it. He sings in the shower when he's sure no one is around. Most of the tunes he sings are ones his sister introduced him to- things like "Uptown Girl" and "Tiny Dancer"; but he knows a handful of newer ones. One time Bachira walked in on him. The dribbler told everyone he knew about it but Chigiri flat out refuses to sing in front of anyone so it's more a rumor.
Reo on the flip side is a horrible singer and refuses to believe anything otherwise. In his head, he is a god of vocals. In reality, he sounds like Toad from Super Mario getting tased in the balls. Nagi has learned the art of tuning him out, so he's no help in disproving Reo's false beliefs.
Gagamaru has been the resident bug catcher since the Blue Lock Spider Incident of 2018. He's the only one brave enough to gather them up in his hands and put them outside.
#Blue Lock#headcanons#brainrot hours#no spoilers unless you count Sae and Shidou being mentioned but nothing story/plotwise is dropped#isagi yoichi#bachira meguru#kunigami rensuke#chigiri hyoma#raichi jingo#nagi seishiro#reo mikage#rin itoshi#sae itoshi#shidou ryusei#gagamaru gin#I made myself laugh with these#thank you again to my friend (you know who you are)#You were the inspiration for these can't deny#ASGBLHCs

Suburban music videos: What's the deal?
Some of you may know that a couple of days ago I started a playlist of music videos from the 1990s and 2000s which all seem to be featured in or prominently feature American suburban areas. I forget what the actual post was that pointed this out, but I think I kind of had that idea before I saw it.
One of the first music videos I thought of was 'Rockin' the Suburbs' by Ben Folds from 2001, because not only does it explicitly mention a suburb, but the video is done in such a way that I think it was meant to poke fun at the angry white boy music that plagued the late 90's (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc).
youtube
The other video I thought of was 'Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)' by the Offspring from 1998. Like RTS, it's meant to poke fun at middle-class white dudes who think they're hot shit because they listen to rap, when in reality they come off as cheesy wannabes. So it would make sense for the MV to have that setting.
youtube
The main trope these MVs have in common is that they both have the "haha 90s ironic edge" on them. Like it's very obvious that the songs are about how tough some dudes think they are, when really they live in a relatively safe and secure area. "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden did something similar in 1994, but I think that it has a completely different vibe to the others. More surrealism, less irony.
youtube
But I think the true golden era of the "suburban neighbourhood music video" was during the early to mid-2000's. With a rise in pop-punk and emo, comes a rise in angsty teens going "blehh!!! screw this place!!!! screw the establishment!!!!!! its not a phase mom!!!!!!", which then resulted in music videos featuring an environment they were probably most familiar with (and probably stuck in).
Here's '1985' by Bowling for Soup, released in 2004. The colour palette for this video is a lot more muted, which is (I find) a common link between most MVs in the 00's. Which gives a more "this is the way things actually are" vibe, compared to the much brighter palettes of the 90s.
youtube
'The Anthem' by Good Charlotte (2003) is quite possibly the most early-00's MV ever, and I consider it to be the definitive suburban neighbourhood music video. The song is about "not living the way you're meant to live" according to Joel Madden, and the video reflects that sentiment! Just a bunch of punk and emo kids going out and causing a ruckus, having a gay ol' time.
It also has this weird blue/greenish filter on it, which is very indicative of its period. That's a whole other story.
youtube
The suburban neighbourhood continued to thrive in music videos throughout the 00's, mainly in pop-punk and emo. I believe this was an attempt to target its demographic; adolescents aged 14-19 who had yet to find their place in the world. Some notable MVs include 'You're Going Down' by Sick Puppies (2009), 'Only One' by Yellowcard (2003), and 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' by the White Stripes (2002).
youtube
youtube
youtube
(side-note: michel gondry, director of the white stripes vid, never misses when it comes to his music videos. this is one of my favourite music videos ever, but it definitely isn't one of my favourite suburban music videos ever.)
SNMVs began to go out of style around the early 2010s, presumably along with pop punk and emo. The closest to it would be 'I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo' by Capital Cities, which came out in 2014. It's very much of a more nostalgic style compared to the others, but it's most likely one of the last of the SNMVs.
youtube
So: Does this specific sub-genre of MV mean anything?
I think individually the videos definitely represent and reflect certain zeitgeists of their eras, but the SNMV is very much rooted in adolescent angst. That feeling that while you are living comfortably, there's definitely something more. Boredom is present in every teenager, and these videos are like a fantasy for them: getting to live out your days without responsibility with your friends, but are suppressed of having any fun because of the 'system' at large.
"Let me tell y'all what it's like
Being male, middle class and white"
youtube
(also i think all star is partially responsible for the rise of interest because of course it is. it's all star by smash mouth. mentioning its very existence feels redundant.)

LCDP x BCS AU
Masterlist for my Nacho spinoff fanfic
Title: From ABQ with love, Nacho
Synopsis:
"I was walking towards my own death when I met him. Life wasn’t easy. Never been, and I’ve given up the hopes of a calm, easy life. I’ve taken farewell to my dad. I’ve somehow accepted the sorrow that I’ll never see him again. That day I killed Ignacio “Nacho” Varga. He died, the second I left Albuquerque. Like I said - this was the end of me. The end of the man who I once was. My story was over, but he had other plans for me." ____________________________
In this Better call Saul AU, Nacho successfully escapes Gus and the Cartel, only to end up in a new crime scene. This time - Together with the mysterious man "The Professor" and his crew of eight ex-criminals. Their plan? To pull a heist against the Royal Mint of Spain - and print 2.4 billion euros. Nacho has nothing to lose but if succeeded - everything to win. To reunite with his father, Nacho agrees to join the Professor. He becomes "Albuquerque" and now gets ready for one final battle. Will he succeed?
About:
Heyy! This fanfiction combines two of my all time favorite shows: La casa de papel and Better call Saul. When making some silly crossover art I thought: "Hmmm... Why not turn this into a story?"
And well... I did!
It is in a Nacho spin-off, but also an LCDP/BCS AU. I know BCS is in the 2000's whilst LCDP is in 2010's. But for the sake of the story... Both stories take place in the same year, in an alternate universe.
This entire work will be published mainly on AO3, but if anyone is interested in reading it on Tumblr, I'll post it here too!
I'll mark every chapter with eventual TW's but what I can say now is that this ficttion has spoilers for both shows.
Feel free to share this post and comment your thoughts, and also check out my AO3! <3

And here we are, folks! As of this coming out, we're only two week away from the start of the new year (along with Christmas being just a week away), so why not come with me on a little walk on memory lane, and discuss not only the progress that I made this year, but also the progress that I've made as an artist in general so far?
While it hasn't been stated much before, I started doing digital art in general back in 2019, more than 5 years ago. And ever since then, I've been steadily making art and improving my skills. The pieces that I made back in '19 were hella rough, as I was just a newbie at the time who didn't knew what he was doing. But over time, I started to get my footing; making new friends that shared the same interests as me, my interests changing and maturing over time, and just generally slowly improving my craft. And that can't be more prevalent than this very year. I mean, think about it; Fakemon design, an art trade, experimenting with different brushes and art styles, having your work featured on a Youtube channel (twice on two different occasions), and especially working on TWO different monthly drawing challenges in the same year. I usually don't wanna toot my own horn, but looking back at the input for 2024, I can certainly say that it's been my most successful and experimental year yet (despite how long it can take between releases).
So with all of that said, what's next for me as an artist? While I can't fully say right now (mainly due to how I'm still trying to brainstorm ideas atm, along with maybe coming up with a secret project or two? I'll need to get that figured out in due time), what I CAN say is pretty neat, as I got a few things to share and tease for the future.
More Maryanna: At this point, Mary has basically become her own character, gradually evolving from what she was originally. As much as I wanna continue with the JT stuff, I've been getting kinda less and less interested about it atm. Not only due to how there's not really much an audience for it, but also due to how Johnny Test, as a franchise, is likely dead in the water for real this time (Wildbrain using the episodes as content farming doesn't really help). This... wasn't easy for me to come to terms with in the slightest, as I did admittingly grew up with the show during Cartoon Network's CHECK IT era back in the early 2010's, but given that the series itself has faded in the public eye after it became the target of so much ridicule due to how the actual series itself has gotten worse with time, it left me thinking on what to do with the original ideas presented with Primal Eternity. Keep in mind; I still LOVE what I suggested for JT: PE so far, but I feel like it could be put on the backburner for a long while. Maybe I could return to it in the future? Perhaps. But, as it stands now, Maryanna (along with Susanic) are going in their own path. What started as me drawing and rambling about the vampire versions of a couple of characters from a 2000's flash cartoon has resulted in them becoming their own distant characters by now, and given that Mary herself is basically ONE of my mascot OCs now (more on that later), it stands to reason that her own adventure is about to begin...
Fakemon Design: As many of you might remember, I tried experimenting with my ideas for a whole Fakemon region based on the Pacific Northwest back in 2022, mainly inspired by the announcement of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. While the steam on that series has long since ran out, I still kept the thought of making Fakemon in the back of my head, as some of my earliest memories on the web involve looking up all sorts of Fakemon designs on places like Tumblr and Deviantart. And as such, I wanna get back to making Fakemon next year. Will I get back to my region-making idea? I'm not sure, but I'm down for it if I get enough ideas to fully make it work. I also wanna experiment with redesigning certain Pokemon as well, so stay tuned for that too.
More Paleoart: Between the few one-off pieces and the second May-strichtian Madness challenge, I really made alot of paleoart this year, haven't I? I'm happy to announce that I'll planning to make more of it in 2025, as it's gearing up to be a MASSIVE year for paleomedia, mainly due to yet another Jurassic World movie coming out next year, but also two big paleodocs in the form of Survivng Earth and the upcoming Walking with Dinosaurs reboot. We just need PHP season 3 to complete the trio of high-quality paleodocs in 2025. And not only are we seeing those projects come out in the new year, but there's also plenty of other forms of paleomedia that are not only coming as well, plenty have already been released in this paleomedia resurgence (Amber Isle, both the Dinosauria and Sauria series made by David James Armsby, the aforementioned PHP already having 2 seasons released, and even TUROK of all franchises coming back next year, along with many others). Needless to say, it's a very good time to be a paleonerd, and I'm hoping to make more art to show off my love for the ancient past.
Art Rebranding + New Look!: Time for the biggest reveal of all! Recently, I've been thinking about updating my current look and style to keep up with my ongoing progress as an artist. The look that I've been having has been around for 6+ years now, but I feel like I should do some spring cleaning to keep up with my work, especially after getting inspired by @space-dragon14 and his recent rebranding. While I can't fully share every detail that I've got cooking in the oven as of right now, I've got some big plans in mind for the future. New look, new logo, same nonsense, and ESPECIALLY a new OC/persona in the works, as you can see up above. Just who exactly is this odd-looking hammerheaded newcomer? You'll just have to wait and see. Just know that soon, you better get ready to take the plunge and experience the madness for yourselves...
And with that, we are fully done with this update+ recap, folks! After a crazy years both in terms of art and real-life stuff, it just fees nice to kick back and to relax for a bit (also went on a quick weekend trip to Atlanta recently, so that was fun). While I'll remain to be active on the web as always, keep it mind that art will slow down for a while, as I wanna get my plans fully figured out first. While the world is gonna be a bit more rough for the next few years, which I'm not looking forward to, I'll always continue to keep making art and other sorts of weird things. If 6 years of being on the internet has taught me anything, it's that making folks’ lives just a bit better with my work will always be my main drive in life.
Hope you all have a very good Christmas, and a happy new year (assuming that the world doesn't go down the crapper by then), and stay tuned for what'll be rising from the depths soon...

"Last Exile is not steampunk but dieselpunk"
(paraphrasing from a user on another platform)
i understand the origin of your misconception, user on another platform that will not be named and i'm pedantic, sad and vocal enough about this to wall of text you
last exile isn't dieselpunk, its not even steampunk; its post-steampunk
youtube
1) it doesn't look like dieselpunk, actually
proto-art deco (eg not art-deco actually) steampunk is not automatically dieselpunk
you're looking at this and thinking, "oh it must be 1950's america" because you're mis-seeing art-deco where it isn't
art-deco's entire visual language is appropriation expressed through geometric rules of the fauvism and ballets russes
but airships!
i get you're pulling from the interbellum period because "zepplin" but the culture and politics is all very 16th/17th century prussia, switzerland, austria, etc -- to say "airship = dieselpunk" means every final fantasy game with an airship is dieselpunk which is blatantly untrue.
there's a convergent evolution of media here and you're projecting a lens that only really came into existence as a reaction to the popularity of steampunk circa 2010 and last exile aired in like 2003 predating all of that during the second resurgence of steampunk in the early 2000's following its origins in i think 1987?
but characters/design!
likewise the look of the characters and artstyle is all art nouveau based which isn't expressed anywhere in dieselpunk
this is owed to Range Murata being influenced a lot by art nouveau and makoto kobayashi being very influenced by the work of french comic artist mobius (jean giraud) who in turn is influenced by fauvism and zenas winsor mccay
2) it doesn't act like dieselpunk, actually
if you want to go by structural definitions and not aesthetic definitions: the setting literally runs on doing things to water to boil it in a special way that makes things float
the dominant politics of the setting to begin with is all 1600's/1700's european continent, until it expands into territorialization (a metamodernist idea you don't see anywhere in dieselpunk)
there is not a corporate structure anywhere in sight (the legal formalist frameworks of modern governence and post-modern lenses do not exist yet), and the modern definition of a scientist also doesn't exist in last exile outside of the guild's researchers who themselves are more preist-like in their approach and culture
3) it is not concerned with dieselpunk's themes
dieselpunk is likewise primarily concerned with explorations of totalitarianism through a lens of scifi, fantasy and noir usually contexturalized as post-classic-conservative into the beginnings of a very very early proto-neoliberalism vs "the other" which is nebulously defined as either nazis, communism or nazi communism (as seen in everything from The Rocketeer to The Grand Dark) -- which usually come as a modernist "well at least we're not like those guys, go team!"
none of that is anywhere in last exile
the irony usually is that dieselpunk is never actually punk; dieselpunk is almost never anti-fascist, anti-industrialist (not to be confused with anti-industrial), anti-militarist (read: mil industrial project) or anti-brutalist and usually endorses all of those things as the norm
last exile takes VERY big swings at all of these things, which is mainly concerned with exploring how cultures stabilize under the influence of other cultures foreign policies and how the territorialized nations are deliberately held back for the interests of the invader (in this case the guild) who then pit the territorialized nations against eachother in a zero-sum strategy of containment -- which is honestly taking shots at every single one of those points and is squarely aimed at highlighting the issues with the kind of technocratic fascism which arose in italy and russia circa the 1920's upon those 17th/18th century european cultures
4) its very concerned with steampunk's themes, albiet from a stanndpoint of technocracy, not theologism or old-world vs new world
steampunk's dominant concept in classic literature or formative literature is that of exposing corruption or the realization of corruption from within -- forgoing the brutalist war-focused ideas in dieselpunk and the unrecoverable corruption of cyberpunk for actionable rebellions against larger entities, typically by interdicting their quest for something fantastical…
in this case rather than a company, empire, nation, king or government it is instead a technocratic territorializer who has instilled false religions and false cultural constructs as a means to control containerized nations in its own interests…
which is… literally… the story…

Okay so beta design concepts and sins and yeah for the hazbin rockymedia au
Ryan :
Sin - pride, Cause of death - Bar fight : got into the argument at first cause he was being way too prideful to admit he was wrong, it ended with him getting a bullet through the heart. Animal he's based off of/Demon type - He looks more like a wolf with his features but has more agility and flexibility like a cat. Date of death - around the 2010's.
Tina :
She got into heaven due to being relatively well hearted. Cause of death - protecting a child from a tiger attack, ended up getting mauled. Why she's fallen - questioned the rules and generally everything way too much which got her thrown out of heaven. She looks similar to a tiger with striped hair but no tail or ears. Date of death - late 2000's.
Goldy :
Sin - greed. Cause of death - Assassination : She got a bit too greedy with some money and ended up with a slit throat and several stab wounds. Date of death - late 1910's. Demon type/Animal she looks similar to - she doesn't look all that similar to any animals but she's got a bunch of golden patches on her skin all over her body, mainly on her neck, the patches shine in the right lighting like actual gold, her hair also has some golden streaks.
Unicorn Mann :
Sin - ???(might update later). Cause of death - chemical explosion : Mixed some chemicals wrong in his makeshift lab and it exploded, he died only seconds after. Date of death - late 2011. Demon type/animal he looks similar to - he has wings like an alicorn, and well, two horns instead of one, both look like unicorn horns, just more demon-like, he also has a horse tail and hooves on his feet, he has white eyes and a mask-like marking on his face.
Sabre :
Sin - ???(again might update later). Cause of death - hypothermia : he died in the forest, wolves and other woodland creatures eventually got to his body. Date of death - late 1930s. Demon type/what animal he resembles - His mouth has malformed a bit to resemble a beak in a way, he has wings that connect to his arms that are almost like a dull looking orange-gray-ish color, his eyes are a red-color.
These might not be the official thing I go with (most might be tbh) but just small concepts- if you have any ideas for them or the other characters lmk :3
#rockymedia#wow i love them#silly hazbin rymedia#i really want to give goldy a animal inspired design but idk whatd fit her#silly billys

Here is my view/retrospective on the legacy of emo rock/pop punk bands I listened to growing up. Also, some bands that aren't emo/pop punk but I still like.
All American Rejects: I always thought they were the rivals to Green Day, but their legacy isn't as big as the other bands in pop culture at the time. Their legacy on Bionicle for Toa Inika commercials is good. Shame they aren't as big in retrospect since I like their songs a s a kid and as an adult.
Green Day: They had a massive Pop culture impact. They peaked with the American Idiot album. A lot of their early stuff is good. Their early albums in the 90's capture this sense of malaise, angst and edginess while occasionally having funny songs. American Idiot is probably their strongest album and the most political one since it's against the Bush Administration, the Iraq War and all the shit the neocons were doing at the time. It was very energetic, intense and introspective. While 21st Century Breakdown feels like the leftovers of American Idiot. It still has the same style as American Idiot but is not as intense. 21st Century Breakdown felt more resigned than American Idiot. Like the fight was fading from them. I still like 21st Century Breakdown nonetheless. The most recent song I heard was that one where they are making fun of mass shooters called Mommy's Little Psycho. It's a decent song in its own right and the subject matter is a good satire. But in terms of the energy, it felt lacking compared to their older stuff. It feels kind of worn out. If that's how that song was, I'm guessing the rest of the album it came from must be the same unfortunately.
Politically, they are the definition of being fake rebels especially Billy Joe Armstrong. He acts like an edgy anarchist but is more of a basic bitch liberal. Kind of a shame tbh since their live shows seem fun. He never criticized Obama's foreign policy and surveillance state despite building off what Bush did. That always bugged me since he was one of the most vocal anti-Bush rockers during that time period. I've noticed this since middle school when comparing them to other pop punk bands at the time like Rise Against which was more radical. Mind you my middle school years was during George W. Bush's 2nd term where everyone was bitching about him. Sorry to bitch about politics folks it ends here. Overall, they do have good music with their older songs, but they aren't as edgy as they make themselves out to be.
My Chemical Romance: These guys also had a big impact on pop culture and Gerard Way leveraged it for his comic book writing career. When I was growing up, I thought of them as THE EMO ROCK BAND growing up. Their early stuff is surprisingly raw and kind of hardcore. Their later stuff is still good but doesn't have the same edge as their first album. The first album is more politically driven because of Gerard Way's trauma to 9/11 and it's aftermath. But it's integrated as more of this darker feeling rather than being explicit like Green Day was. I still like them.
Blink 182: They surprisingly had a big effect on other pop punk bands. Looking back, it feels like a lot of smaller bands at the time were imitating them like MxPx, Sum 41 and Anarbor. A lot of those bands felt like they were copying that fun feel Blink 182 has. They were always more light fun rather than being edgy or political. But that's fine since they were good at it. They basically were the band that were reflective of young boys in the 2000's. Fun, crass but not that edgy but still entertaining, nonetheless.
Jimmy Eats world: I don't know if they left a massive legacy but i like some of their songs. They can go surprisingly hard with songs like Disintegration.
Fall Out Boy: I don't know if they influenced other bands but I do like a lot of their earlier stuff. Mainly the stuff from the early 2000's. Their early 2010's albums like Save Rock and Roll and American Beauty are ok. I have a particular soft spot for the song What a Catch Donnie. It just speaks to me.
Panic at the Disco: I always felt they were meant to be rivals to MCR. I do enjoy the earlier stuff. Though the later stuff is just Brendan Urie doing his own thing which is still decent, and you can see how he evolves. I always thought Panic at the Disco was the whole band not just a Brendan Urie vehicle. I always thought bands just focused on staying together rather than splitting apart to do their own thing. Turns out that's actually pretty common in bands. I guess a lot of those rock band movies I watched as a kid were misleading. Really love that Green Gentleman song. It's probably my favorite song of theirs.
Red hot chili peppers: They're not pop punk but I still like their music. They're fun and interesting to listen to even to this day. I'm not sure what sub-genre they fall under buy I guess they fit into the alt-rock umbrella, I guess. Many of their songs still hold up and have a good variety to them. Some are intense, some are more introspective, and some have this sort of laid-back feel to them. I think that variety is why I like them.
Foo Fighters: I've grown to appreciate them over the years. Since I did not listen to them as a kid but rather as a teenager. Which is funny since they are probably older than most of the bands listed here so I guess I got into them kind of late. Once again, they're not pop punk but still good. I've listened to them from the mid 2000's to my high school years. I've gradually listened to more of their songs, and they hold up really well.
The Offspring: I've grown to appreciate them over the years. Since I only listened to a few of their songs growing up (mainly the Crazy Taxi theme song) but as an adult have listened to more of them. Basically, they are what Green Day wishes it was politically. They're left wing but they feel more legit somehow. Like they're more sincere and have more of an edge to them. They're not anarchist but more legit. I guess they incorporate it more naturally rather than having to put up a front. Also, they have lots of funny songs too. So, it's a good balance.
Atari's: I discovered them some years ago. Shame I never listened to them beforehand. They are fairly good. Not the greatest but worth listening to some of their songs. The acoustic version of Looking Back on Today is really good. Better than the electric guitar version. The acoustic one feels more soulful.
Anarbor: I learned of them through Cartoon Network as a kid. I enjoyed them when I was younger. They didn't stand out too much and were kind of reflective of the bands of that time period. They were still enjoyable, nonetheless.
Reel Big Fish: They are ska not pop punk, but I love their music. They are very funny as hell. I put them here as an honorable mention. They are not just funny but very entertaining in their own right.
Sum 41: I heard a few of their songs like Fat lip growing up. They are another one of those bands that in retrospect are reflective of the time they were made in. They're entertaining but don't stand out too much or change the genre.
The main thing I remember them from is We're all to blame from Godzilla Final Wars. 10-year-old me loved that and it goes harder than a Sum 41 song has any right to. it also spawned tons of Godzilla AMV's in the late 2000's on YouTube. I still love it to this day.
Those are my views on 2000's emo rock bands, pop punk bands and other bands of that time. There is a tinge of nostalgia to this, but I also tried to be more analytical. It's kind of hard not to be nostalgic about this since I pretty much grew up with these bands as a kid. But I hope I did a good job, nonetheless. Hope you enjoyed reading this!

The Death of the Virtual World Era: A Retrospective Glance
Habbo Hotel, Club Penguin, IMVU, Gaia Online. All of these once beloved web apps have slowly faded into obscurity, either by shutting down or by a loss of player base. Growing up, I always adored online virtual world games. For all who played them, they offered, friendship, enjoyment, and escapism. You could be anything you wanted to be so long as there was a community for it. Want to roleplay as a mafia boss and run a high-end casino? Or maybe family roleplay is more your speed and you'd like to adopt or get adopted. Or maybe you just wanted to hangout and meet other people being your genuine self. These games offered that and are so treasured and yet still, they've vanished. But why?
Anyone whose even looked a little into the death of the virtual world empire that took the internet by storm in the mid 2000's-2010's knows that there's a fairly easily traced to one big factor: A lack of new players. As these games got older, so did their player bases. In turn, the virtual worlds would take one of two approaches on average to combat this: a. Lean towards a maturing audience in order to appease their existing player base.
b. Go for a hyper kid-friendly approach to attempt to draw in new, younger players.
The primary flaw with the first method mainly laid in the fact that older players are more prone to leaving the virtual worlds; either by getting bored and quitting intentionally, or by simply being an adult and having life cause the time investment into the world to sink in exchange for other demands on their time.
The second approach's flaw is a bit more complicated. A big reason many corporate execs thought that option B was the best route to take is that it by all means appears to be on the surface. New blood means new money and traffic and means that even if a player loses interest in the game, a new one will take their place. However many countries have strict laws governing businesses that are directed for children; and this ramped up in the mid-late 2010's. Companies could no longer shove advertisements at kids in the same way that they could in years prior. Children's online safety acts swept across the US, Canada, and the UK in response to parental concern over a multitude of websites and web activities.
As a result, it became increasingly more expensive to run these types of worlds while targeting kids. Heavy moderation teams were required, and advertising became a much more expensive process. This caused many great titans to fall. While some, like club penguin and webkinz, have tried their hands at re-launching their games for a mobile-centric audience, they just haven't had the pull that they used to have.
Ironically, those games who leaned into an older audience- such as IMVU, Habbo, and Gaia, all still remain in (relatively) their original state with an active- but smaller- player base. I feel as though a big player in their success lies in both the nostalgia they bring as well as the niche communities they've formed. Are any of these good by today's standards? Well... That's a rant for another day.
/End Rant
**Note: I deliberately excluded Second Life from the discussion, as it is an anomaly of it's own.
