New Leader

New Director of Golf, Christopher Runyan, PGA, is leading Circling Raven in 2023.  His position is an exciting, important one given the golf club’s excellence, its role hosting an Epson “Road to the LPGA” Tour event, the historically excellent course conditions, the nationally honored golf shop, and the clubhouse with popular Twisted Earth Grill.

Runyan serves on national PGA of America committees, is a multi-time award-winning golf instructor and a retired Marine.

Hobbies you have?

I golf. I’ve golfed with my dad since I was 13. It’s the thing we do together and when we’re apart, and I’m quite good at it now. I think it’s important to have at least one form of physical sport that you do, and golfing is mine. I follow the LPGA and PGA tours, and it’s one of my favorite activities to do on the weekends and when I have time to leave the library and swing.

 

I sail as well, not as much now that I’m on the ocean, but I did it a lot when I had access to the lakes. I personally love it; I think it’s really fun and a great way to learn your way around the water. Sailing was one of the best ways for me to become at ease with the water, and I’m a very good swimmer from years of practice. 

 

I’m a major fan of ceramics; I’m a member of a private ceramics shop here in LA, and I create my own creations. It’s the ultimate form of self-care for me; it relaxes me, and I love the things I’ve been able to create. I think a lot of people think that ceramics studios are incredibly pricey, but the ones I’ve been to have been affordable, had lessons for beginners, and been geared towards a younger (mid twenties) crowd.

 

I play tennis. I know it’s another sport, but I think it’s important to list because it’s a major part of my life. I try to play singles on Mondays and Fridays, and I usually play doubles on Tuesdays and Thursdays now that I’m on campus. I think it’s a great form of exercise; it’s easy to learn and get into, and I grew up being obsessed with Althea Gibson and how she was truly a pioneer, and that fascination has never left me. 

 

I cook and love cooking. I hosted a Monday night supper club when I was living in NYC, and exploring with food has really helped heal me. I love planning menus, working with new strange and new ingredients, going to markets that stock foreign food, and trying things from new cultures. I’m the type of girl who could look at a fridge with three things in it and make something out of nothing. Cooking is one of my favorite ways to indulge my sense of adventure.

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) announced Wednesday that trans women who went through “male puberty” are no longer eligible to compete in elite competitions. The U.S. Golf Association (USGA) announced the same policy. “Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach,” LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan claimed in a statement. “The policy represents our continued commitment to ensuring that all feel welcome within our organization, while preserving the fairness and competitive equity of our elite competitions.” “Can’t say I didn’t see this coming,” trans professional golfer Hailey Davidson reportedly wrote in an Instagram story on Wednesday. The new rules make her ineligible to compete, as she did not begin transitioning until her twenties. “Banned from the Epson and the LPGA. All the silence and people wanting to stay ‘neutral’ thanks for absolutely nothing. This happened because of all your silence.”

Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA and former LPGA commissioner, told the Associated Press that “competitive fairness” is the “North star.”

“We tried not to get into politics, or state by state or any of that stuff,” Whan said. “We just simply said, ‘Where would somebody — at least medically today — where do we believe somebody would have a competitive advantage in the field?’ And we needed to draw a line. We needed to be able to walk into any women’s event and say with confidence that nobody here has a competitive advantage based on their gender. And this policy delivers that.” Many trans athletes are facing impossible hurdles as legislators make it increasingly difficult for youth to obtain gender-affirming care while sports bodies increasingly make rules requiring transitions to have happened in childhood. Earlier this year, Davidson – who has long been the subject of controversy in her sport – issued a withering response to NXXT Women’s Pro Golf Tour’s decision to ban trans women, calling it “a slap in the face to ALL female athletes.”

Two major golf organizations, LPGA and USGA, ban trans women who went past Tanner Stage 2 “male puberty” from playing in women’s competitions.

The report, titled "Violence Against Women and Girls in Sports" and authored by UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Reem Alsalem, examines the impact of transgender athletes in women's sports globally.

The report has been released at a time when high-profile transgender athletes are gaining media attention.

For instance, trans golfer Hailey Davidson recently competed in The Ladies Professional Golf Association's (LPGA) second qualifying stage despite opposition from a group of 275 female golfers who objected to the inclusion policy of the organization. Currently, the LPGA requires that transgender golfers undergo gender-affirming surgery and hormone therapy after puberty to compete.

Similarly, San Jose State University's (SJSU) volleyball team has come under scrutiny for fielding a transgender player who, during a recent match, accidentally injured an opponent with a forceful spike. Following this incident, four volleyball teams in the Mountain West Conference chose to forfeit their games against SJSU in protest.

These incidents are just a few of the many instances wherein transgender athletes beat biologically female athletes in women's sports.

In fact, the UN report reveals that over 600 female athletes did not win in more than 400 competitions across 29 sports. This, in turn, impacted about 890 medal outcomes. The report notes that this trend is the "replacement of the female sports category with a mixed-sex category."

"The replacement of the female sports category with a mixed-sex category has resulted in an increasing number of female athletes losing opportunities, including medals, when competing against males," the report said.

Today's Black History Month illustration is of Althea Gibson. She became the first Black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis and golf. (She has a TON of records, so here it goes!)

Gibson was born in 1927 on a cotton farm in South Carolina, but her family moved to Harlem in 1930. While growing up in NYC, she played paddle tennis under the supervision of the New York Police Athletic League. She became so good at paddle tennis that by the age of twelve, she won the NYC women’s paddle tennis championship.

In 1940, a group of Gibson’s neighbors put money together to pay for her junior membership at the Cosmopolitan Tennis Club in Harlem. A year later, she won her first tournament, the American Tennis Association’s NY State Championship, founded by Black tennis players. She won the ATA national championship in 1944 & 1945. In 1947, she won the ATA’s women’s singles championship, which she continued to win for 10 consecutive years.

Her success drew the attention of Dr. Walter Johnson, a Black physician from Virginia who was also an avid tennis player. He mentored her and helped her enter into competitions with the US Tennis Association (USTA). In 1949, she became the first Black woman and second Black athlete to play in the USTA’s National Indoor Championship. After that, she received a full athletic scholarship at Florida A&M.

In 1950, Gibson became the first Black to compete in the US Open at Forest Hills in Queens, NY. In 1956, she became the first African American to win the French Open. In 1957, she won Wimbledon, and received the trophy personally from Queen Elizabeth. She won the doubles championship as well and when she returned to NYC, she became the second athlete (after Jesse Owens) to receive a ticker tape parade.

In late 1958, after winning 56 national and international singles and doubles titles including 11 Grand Slam championships, she retired from amateur tennis at the age of 31. In 1964, at the age of 37, she became the first Black woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. Her best tournament finish was a tie for second place at the 1970 Buick Open.

Overall, Althea Gibson is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players in history and paved the way for players like Venus and Serena Williams.

By listening to and learning from them, the company continues to build the best possible version of sport for this generation — and expands it for the next. It is with that intent that Nike is continuing one of its greatest opportunities to listen to and learn from athletes: Athlete Think Tank.

“We’re excited to introduce the next chapter of the Nike Athlete Think Tank,” says Tanya Hvizdak, VP, Global Women’s Sports Marketing. “Our partnership with this collective of incredible changemakers represents Nike’s continued commitment to champion women and girls. Together, we are taking action to create bigger change through sport.” 

Athlete Think Tank (ATT) is a collective of influential athlete voices that help the company champion women and girls in sport. Based off the success of its inaugural group, Nike brought together a second cohort: ATT 2.0. This new cohort includes 11 elite women athletes from different geographies and sport experiences who are at varying junctures in their sport lives, including: A’ja Wilson, Adia Barnes, Anna Cockrell, Cai Xuetong (aka “Tong Tong”), Chloe Kim, Faith Kipyegon, Michaela Mabinty DePrince, Michelle Wie West, Rayssa Leal, Sam Kerr, and Tatyana McFadden.

In November, Nike invited ATT 2.0 members to its World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., to launch a year-long journey with a two-day workshop. The company’s goal was to know exactly what it could do to support this group of women athletes and their communities — to understand their needs, learn from their unique experiences, and hear their ideas for improving sport for women and girls. The event was an in-depth, wide-ranging two-way dialogue and an opportunity for Nike to share its vision for growing women’s sport. For the athletes, it was an opportunity to share what matters most to them, from product design to athlete services to partnering for even greater impact in the world of sport and beyond.

During the past year, Nike invited ATT 2.0 members, and select members from its inaugural cohort, to pivotal sporting events in Eugene, Ore., London and Chicago, creating space for candid and unfiltered conversations. The insights they’ve shared will help inform how Nike creates innovative products, meaningful experiences and supportive communities for all athletes, especially women and girls. This community-building is a hallmark of Nike Athlete Think Tank; it acts as a forum to foster connections between Nike athletes from all walks of life. “We believe that investing in women makes sport better,” says Hvizdak. “Together, we created space for athletes to build and strengthen connections during record-breaking, future-defining moments in sport — because we know that the voice of the collective is unstoppable.”

The newest members of the collective want to do more to improve the experience of girls and women in sport. “It has been incredible to be with other members of Nike’s Athlete Think Tank who have all used their voices and platforms to shape the future of women in sport,” says snowboarder and Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim. “It has been great to work with Nike and this collective on creating solutions for the next generation."

In addition to listening and learning, NIKE, Inc. is continuing to partner with Charities Aid Foundation America (CAF America) to donate a total of $1.25 million, which will go toward supporting a nonprofit of choice for Athlete Think Tank members. These investments put action behind the words, says LPGA professional golfer Michelle Wie West. “It has motivated me to be more active in my community and use my platform to discuss topics that I care about most.” This includes challenging Nike to think even bigger about the change that it can create. And together, through commitments such as the CAF America investments, the company and its athletes are stepping up and taking action. 

Building off the success of its first two cohorts, Nike will form a third Athlete Think Tank later this year.
