Tiger makes another return to the PGA Tour

SAN DIEGO/January 25, 2018(AP)(STL.News)— Tiger Woods has played only 23 events on the PGA Tour since his last victory.

He also has gone more than four years without winning.

That shows just how much back problems have sidelined Woods since that victory in the Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013 when he was No. 1 in the world. His next comeback starts Thursday in the Farmers Insurance Open, and Woods checks in at No. 647.

There’s a reason for the ranking. This will be only his second PGA Tour event since he tied for 10th at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015, so long ago that Jon Rahm — the No. 2 player in the world — was just starting his senior year at Arizona State.

“I just really haven’t played tournament golf in, well, basically since Wyndham in 2015,” Woods said. “It’s been a long time and so I just want some starts, I want to start feeling what it feels like to be out here and hit shots, grind out scores. It’s been a full year that I’ve played on the Tour so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Different about this comeback is that Woods believes his back has been built — through fusion surgery in April — to last more than three rounds.

The interest is just as high.

The Farmers Insurance Open has 156 players, and 155 of them are sure to be practically ignored for at least two days.

“The more attention you guys have on Tiger, the better for me,” said Rahm, the defending champion at Torrey Pines. Coming off a playoff victory last week in the California desert, Rahm can reach No. 1 in the world if he were to win.

The return of Woods dwarfs everything in golf this week, including the LPGA Tour season-opener in the Bahamas and Masters champion Sergio Garcia defending his title in the Dubai Desert Classic.

PGA TOUR

Woods has tempered his own expectations because he has been away from top competition for so long. Even so, he has a strong history at Torrey Pines. Woods has won the PGA Tour event seven times , and that doesn’t include his 2008 U.S. Open victory in a 19-hole playoff over Rocco Mediate.

The most recent memories haven’t been all that great.

Woods returned to golf at Torrey Pines after a 16-month break because of two back surgeries, and he didn’t come close to making the 36-hole cut. The previous time, he withdrew after 11 holes when he said the cold morning fog that led to delays kept his glutes from activating . And the year before that, he made the cut with one shot to spare, but then shot 79 the next day to miss a 54-hole cut.

Woods, however, is more inclined to look forward. This is the start, and he already has mapped out a schedule.

“I’m just trying to build toward April,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing a full schedule and getting ready for the Masters, and I haven’t done that in a very long time. That’s usually been my schedule and my outlook … to try to get ready for Augusta. And there’s no reason to change that.”

Rahm picked up his first pro title a year ago with a 50-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole that led to a three-shot victory. He since has won three more times around the world and is on the cusp of reaching No. 1 at age 23.

LPGA TOUR

The Bahamas was the scene of Woods returning to any competition when he tied for ninth in the Hero World Challenge.

Now it’s the women’s turn.

The Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic is back on Paradise Island, where Brittany Lincicome won last year over Lexi Thompson in a playoff. The field includes Shanshan Feng of China, the No. 1 player in women’s golf who won twice late last year during the Asia Swing.

This will be as close as the LPGA gets to a domestic event for six weeks. It heads to Australia and Asia before returning to Arizona in March.

EUROPEAN TOUR

Sergio Garcia is back to defend his title in the Dubai Desert Classic , and even as the Masters champion, he might not be the star attraction.

Woods isn’t the only player on the comeback trail.

Rory McIlroy, who has fallen out of the top 10 in the world, sat out the last three months to make sure his injuries were fully healed. He tied for third last week in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and now goes to a course where he has won twice .

Dubai is for McIlroy what Torrey Pines used to be for Woods. He has never finished out of the top 10.

This was the tenth straight year Little Linksters™, LLC, along with the Little Linksters™ Association for Junior Golf Development (501c3) has hosted this kid-centric contest. Once again, this year, some very heavy hitters from the golf world joined the cause, including World Golf Hall of Fame members, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam, and PGA Tour Star, Jordan Spieth. They will join a team of US and International based PGA and LPGA teaching professionals. The judges include, US Kids Golf Top 50 instructors Michelle Holmes, Zoe Allen from Ireland, and Tom Reid from the UK, as well as acclaimed Canadian Instructor, Jason Helman. They all will join the contest’s host, and Little Linksters founder, Brendon Elliott, who was named the PGA’s National Youth Player Development award winner in 2017.

This popular contest allows parents to upload a video to YouTube of their “Little Linksters” swing. Videos this year were submitted from January through the end of July and winners were crowned in four age groups—ranging from ages 3 to 12. Voting was conducted by a panel of industry veterans and experts. This is an inclusive contest, with fun at its center point, so all children, regardless of ability are always encouraged to submit their swings!

“In what has been an incredibly challenging year in many respects, we were determined to once again offer this opportunity to children and showcase to the golf world what the youngest among us can do with a golf club. More recently, Elliott was named a 2019 GRAA Top 50 Elite Status Growth of the Game Teacher and one of Orlando Family Magazine’s 2019 Men of the Year. Brendon leads the judging of the Best Pee Wee Swing contest each year. He was assisted by this year’s celebrity panel of judges. 

Taking part in the 2020 campaign were:

• Jack Nicklaus— World Golf Hall of Fame member and the man that holds the record for the most major championship titles in the men’s game. Known to many as the best male golfer of all time. Mr. Nicklaus is making his fourth appearance as a judge in the Best Pee Wee Swing Contest.

• Annika Sorenstam— Also a World Golf Hall of Fame member. She is regarded as one of the best female golfers in history. She won 90 international tournaments as a professional, making her the female golfer with the most wins to her name. • Jordan Spieth— Jordan is a three-time major winner and the 2015 FedEx Cup champion. In April 2016, Time magazine named Spieth to its list of the "100 Most Influential People", noting that he "exemplifies everything that's great about sports." Spieth's first major win came in the 2015 Masters Tournament where he became the second youngest golfer (behind Tiger Woods) to win the Masters. He then won the 2015 U.S. Open with a score of 5-under-par. He was the youngest U.S. Open champion since amateur Bobby Jones in 1923. This will be Jordan’s third time as a judge in our contest.

• Michelle Holmes— One of the very brightest instructors in the junior golf instruction arena. A multiple award- winning teacher, Michelle is the owner of the Michelle Holmes School of Golf at Cahoon Plantation. Michelle serves the greater Williamsburg, Virginia Beach and Outer Banks area but has an ever-increasing influence around the world. This is her third straight year as a judge. Among her numerous awards, Michelle is a US Kids Golf Top 50 Master Kids Instructor.

• Zoe Allen— Another of the very brightest up and comers in the junior golf instruction arena. A multiple award- winning teacher, Zoe is the owner of Zoe Allen Golf at Lurgan Golf Club in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. Zoe won the distinction of being named a US Kids Golf Top 50 Master Kids Instructor this past January at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL. This is her third year as a judge.

• Tom Reid— US Kids Top 50 Instructor, Tom Reid hails from the U.K. Tom is a former Touring Professional that has made a significant impact in the junior golf arena in Europe over the past few years. Formerly an instructor at the highly acclaimed Wentworth Club, Tom is now the senior teaching professional at Stoke Park Golf and Country Club. Tom is a lead in the Leadbetter Kids program, which is a youth program from the David Leadbetter Academy. • Jason Helman— Over the past 25+ years as a Golf Professional, Jason has made his mark in Canada as a top instructor and golf coach. His passion for the game, pride in his students, and their willingness to learn and develop as golfers or athletes so they can reach their highest pinnacle in the game are what drives him. He said, “All I want is for my students to succeed, whether they’re 5 years old or a tour professional.” Jason is the 2010 PGA of Canada National Teacher of the Year as well as the 2016 PGA of Canada Professional National Development Award Recipient.

The Little Linksters™ golf program in Central Florida was originally designed specifically for children ages 3 to 8 years old but has expanded in recent years to include ages up to 18 and children of all abilities. The introductory program is taught in a fun and interactive way, using both traditional and non-traditional instructional methods to ensure children’s first introduction to golf is FUN! The Little Linksters™ Association for Junior Golf Development, a 501c3 nonprofit in conjunction with AAU, is continuing to develop a national program that will enable teaching professionals from across the country to grow their business and the game of golf with a proven program that combines a child-friendly approach, a complete program curriculum, and uses items from some of the industry’s best training aid and junior golf equipment companies. One of the Association’s most prized projects, called G.O.A.L.S. (Golf Outreach Advances Life Skills) is specifically aimed at introducing children ages 3-12+ with special needs to the game of golf. In doing so, children will learn valuable life skills that will help them throughout their life. Lincicome beats Thompson in playoff to notch LPGA season-opener

Brittany Lincicome checked off winning from her to-do list for the 2017 season on Sunday, picking up a playoff win over Lexi Thompson at the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic to cap a week of low scoring.

But Lincicome, who hadn’t won since her the 2015 ANA Inspiration, doesn’t win as often as a two-time major winner probably should — certainly a two-time major winner with the prodigious length and laid-back demeanor Lincicome exhibits week to week. This week was an exercise in convincing herself that she doesn’t have to settle for a good check and no trophy.

“Going into this week we talked about confidence,” said Lincicome. “I wanted to work on my confidence. … I’m a good player. There is no reason why we’re not in contention more, so we had this whole long talk and [caddie Missy Pederson] told me, ‘Get out of your own way.’”

Despite the pep talks, Lincicome, who opened with a 9-under 64, found herself playing conservatively down the stretch. And as she watched Thompson come up the par-5 18th in regulation needing a birdie to win, Lincicome figured the end result would be a good-enough second place. Then Thompson made par, finishing at 26-under total and headed to a playoff with Lincicome.

In the extra frame, Lincicome made birdie to get the win as Thompson parred for the third consecutive time she played the hole.

Thompson walks away without a win, but she does feel encouraged by her off-season work on the greens translating into a lot of made putts throughout the week.

“This whole offseason, I swear I putted two-and-a-half hours each day it seemed like,” said Thompson. “I was just doing nonstop putting drills just trying to get my confidence up and it showed here. It’s paying off.”

Meanwhile, Lincicome was planning to press her luck a little more after the wind-swept win.

“I’m going to the casino tonight,” Lincicome said before she joked, “hopefully try not to lose all of our money that we won today.”
