The Eliot Spencer Details Masterpost
I have been recording details about our beloved Eliot Spencer on my latest watch through. And now, it's finally time to reveal the details!! If I have gotten any details INCORRECT, I beg of you to correct me, at which time, this post will be updated and credit given. (Note: S1 was aired out of chronological order. I am going by chronological episode numbers - aka the correct order - and providing the episode titles as well to minimise confusion.) !! This post contains details from Leverage: Redemption! Read the episode references carefully if you are wanting to avoid certain spoilers !!
Shirtless Moments
S1 E7 The Two-Horse Job: The flashback scene when Aimee asks Eliot what his excuse was for not coming back to her, we see him being dragged/tortured, shirtless. "Tell us what you did with the monkey!"
S2 E2 The Tap-Out Job: Eliot is shirtless for the fight match.
S4 E9 The Cross My Heart Job: Ehh he's not completely shirtless here but whatever. At about 16 mins in, Eliot and Parker are getting changed together, Eliot strips to a singlet then throws his shirt at me the camera. (I didn't include other scenes of Eliot in a singlet here because in this scene he's actively undressing, whereas in others he's not.)
Necklaces
The earliest sighting of his guitar pick necklace is S1 E2 The Homecoming Job. It continues to pop up frequently in episodes, though noticeably less in S1. I thought about recording every occurrence of it here but ... lmao it's in legit waaayyyy too many episodes for me to bother.
S2 E10 The Runway Job: Honourable mention of the necklaces Eliot wears with his fashion week outfit. The longer one is kinda dogtag-esque, the shorter one is ... I think it's a fleur de lis? He also wears a range of chain necklaces later in this episode.
S4 E18 The Last Dam Job: Bird pendant (possibly kingfisher) visible at 34 mins 39 seconds. Full credits to @wolves-in-the-world for this one including the time stamp! You can check out their reblog of this post with more details here!
Dammit Hardison
S1 E13 The Second David Job: The FIRST INSTANCE of dammit Hardison in the entire show! Said upon discovering each other in the gallery, around 4 mins 15 seconds.
S2 E1 The Beantown Bailout Job: Said around 22 mins 30 seconds, immediately following, "What are the odds that Eliot's crotch will actually explode?" Iconic.
S2 E6 The Top Hat Job: When setting up for the magic show and discovering the rabbit missing, roughly 19 mins 45 seconds.
S3 E3 The Inside Job: Running from security, around 31 mins 30 seconds.
S3 E4 The Scheherazade Job: Trying to enter McRory's at the same time, around 1 min 30 seconds.
S3 E5 The Double Blind Job: This is an honourable mention because this time NATE is the one to say dammit Hardison! 9 mins 15 seconds.
S3 E6 The Studio Job: Upon discovering the master tape isn't in the case, roughly 32 mins.
S3 E7 The Gone Fishin' Job: Eliot and Hardison running in the woods for their lives, arguing as always. This one is a bonus 'dammit' because Hardison says it straight back to Eliot after Eliot yells it at him! Around 21 mins.
S3 E12 The King George Job: Discussing Hardison's forgery work, followed by Eliot regretting touching anything. Around 23 mins 55 seconds.
S3 E13 The Morning After Job: Pretending to be cops and accidentally ending up with a prisoner to take back to jail, around 16 mins 20 seconds.
S3 E14 The Ho Ho Ho Job: Honourable mention of Chaos mocking Eliot by saying dammit Hardison. Roughly 21 mins 15 seconds.
(phew, S3 was rough on Hardison! given what Eliot was going through with the whole Moreau thing.... ooh that's delicious angst)
S4 E5 The Hot Potato Job: Honourable mention for Sophie saying it this time! While playing the role that was meant for Eliot, around 24 mins.
S4 E6 The Carnival Job: Mixing chemicals for a distraction, roughly 25 mins 30 seconds.
S4 E17 The Radio Job: Hardison running away from being thrown off a high floor, around 5 mins.
S4 E18 The Last Dam Job: Sneaking around at the Bellington Dam, roughly 13 mins 35 seconds.
S5 E1 The (Very) Big Bird Job: 'Accidentally' putting a brew pub menu in front of Eliot, around 10 mins 20 seconds.
S5 E15 The Long Goodbye Job: Emotional scene that we do not speak about, around 12 mins 40 seconds.
RS1 E1 The Too Many Rembrandts Job: After knocking Harry out and asking Hardison to help carry Harry, and Hardison refuses. 11 mins 40 seconds.
RS1 E2 The Panamanian Monkey Job: Upon discovering that security is headed to the vault where Parker is, and the only way down there is through the vents. Around 34 mins 10 seconds.
RS2 E1 The Debutante Job: We get 3! In this whole episode! Probably to make up for Hardison being gone for most of Redemption. Anyway! First one when Eliot and Hardison are in Ralphie Roy's place and Hardison has no idea who Ralphie is, around 23 mins 15 seconds. Second is when they're breaking into the elevator and Hardison won't help fight or move the unconscious guards, roughly 37 mins 40 seconds. And third, after the job when Parker says that Hardison was the one who took out all the guards. Around 45 mins 10 seconds.
RS2 E3 The Tournament Job: Right at the start after Eliot says gaming isn't a sport and Parker texts Hardison, so Hardison starts blowing up Eliot's phone. Lmao. Around 4 mins 20 seconds.
RS2 E4 The Date Night Job: After realising Breanna stole his truck, Eliot says dammit, then aims it at a grinning Hardison, since Breanna is already running away. Around 46 mins 50 seconds.
Dammit Parker
S1 E4 The Snow Job: Parker jumps out of a second floor window, Eliot catches her. 15 mins. (Parker gets a dammit from Eliot before Hardison does!!)
S3 E8 The Boost Job: Parker driving erratically, Eliot thrown around in back seat. (Technically there's a pause between dammit and Parker but I'm still including it) 35 min 35 seconds.
S5 E12 The White Rabbit Job: Searching the mark's house, Parker wants to steal a shirt. Again, this isn't technically a proper dammit Parker, as Eliot instead says, "Put it back! Dammit." But I'm still including it because it was aimed at her. 21 mins 20 seconds.
RS1 E9 The Bucket Job: Parker is pretending to be a hacker heavily modelled off Hardison. Not a proper dammit Parker as, again, Eliot only mutters "dammit" under his breath, but still counts to me. Just after 18 mins.
RS1 E10 The Unwellness Job: At end of episode, after Parker admits that she didn't even learn Eliot's name till after the team broke up the first time. 44 mins 30 seconds.
RS1 E13 The Hurricane Job: After washing up on shore and entering the Beacon Inn, Parker and Eliot are bickering about Maria. He doesn't strictly say dammit Parker but there's absolutely no doubt who he's directing the dammits towards. 3 mins 30 seconds.
RS2 E6 The Fractured Job: When farewelling Billy and Parker says next time she'll finish telling him about the robot bodies. Again, it's just dammit not dammit Parker but it's close enough. 41 mins.
RS2 E8 The Turkish Prisoner Job: Another standalone dammit that is most definitely aimed at Parker! When breaking Romero out, Parker says she's a firefighter (with far too much glee), around 14 mins 30 seconds.
RS2 E10 The Work Study Job: A full dammit Parker this time! When Parker reveals that it's super easy to steal from a university and produces a whole bunch of stuff, roughly 22 mins 40 seconds.
Very Distinctive Moments
S1 E2 The Homecoming Job: Eliot ID's the weapon from the gunshots, around 8 mins. Later, he ID's a guy off his knife fighting style, around 18 mins 50 seconds.
S2 E6 The Top Hat Job: ID's a CIA guy from his stance, roughly 7 mins 45 seconds.
S3 E11 The Rashomon Job: ID's the smell of peppermint on Hardison's breath, around 21 mins.
S3 E12 The King George Job: ID's former British paratroopers by their haircuts, 30 mins 10 seconds.
S4 E1 The Long Way Down Job: ID's a former spetsnaz guy by his footprint, 13 mins 45 seconds.
S4 E5 The Hot Potato Job: Honourable mention of Eliot ID'ing ex-military personnel by their stances, he just doesn't say very distinctive. 18 mins 50 seconds.
S4 E11 The Experimental Job: Honourable mention of Eliot ID'ing a helicopter by the whumpa-whumpa (there's 7 of them did you know). Around 7 mins.
S5 E3 The First Contact Job: ID's military satellite transmission by the static, 7 mins 20 seconds.
S5 E9 The Rundown Job: ID's a Navy Seal who enlisted between '90-'95 by his watch, around 16 mins.
RS1 E2 The Panamanian Monkey Job: ID's a drone (Breanna's) from the sound. 11 mins 50 seconds.
RS1 E3 The Rollin' On The River Job: ID's Russian mob by the tattoos, 36 mins 30 seconds.
RS1 E7 The Double-Edged Sword Job: Honourable mention for Maria ID'ing the way Eliot disarmed her gun, 7 mins 50 seconds.
RS2 E4 The Date Night Job: Eliot ID's a guy as not having a distinctive anything - which is what is so distinctive. 20 mins 40 seconds.
RS2 E13 The Crowning Achievement Job: ID's MI6 off their search pattern, 6 mins 50 seconds.
Known Family
S1 E6 The Miracle Job: When discussing Bibletopia, Eliot says his nephew would like it. This is the ONLY mention of a nephew in the entire show, Redemption included; nor is there any direct mention of a sibling beyond this (which leads me to believe that this nephew is actually the son of a close friend/cousin/military buddy, rather than a direct family relation, but that's just my headcanon).
S2 E3 The Order 23 Job: When talking to the abused boy, Randy, Eliot says he has an uncle named Randy.
S5 E11 The Low Low Price Job: Eliot's dad owned a hardware store and he wanted Eliot to take over one day. But Eliot wanted to get out of that small town, so he joined the service. Fought with his dad the night before he left and hasn't been back since. He goes back at the end of this episode and knocks - but his dad never answers the door 😭
RS1 E9 The Bucket Job: While interrogating/torturing Eliot with Red Haze, Bligh says that Eliot's dad's friend from Vietnam has invited Eliot to join them for Christmas. At the end of the episode, Eliot goes to join them for dinner, only to get a message from 'J' that his dad was a no show. This 'J' is widely accepted as Eliot's unknown sibling but that is incorrect! 'J' is Eliot's dad's buddy from Vietnam!
RS2 E6 The Fractured Job: The ultimate Eliot family backstory episode!! (if you haven't seen it yet and don't want spoilers, skip this one!) Eliot was adopted by a black couple, Billy and an unnamed woman, after being abandoned/surrendered at a hospital as a baby. His father was a war hero who got none of the glory and sustained a wound, ruining his civilian career path, so Billy never wanted Eliot to follow in his footsteps. Eliot loved the stories of his dad in the military so joined up to be like him. His mother died while Eliot was on an op and he couldn't get leave to come back for the funeral, deepening the rift between him and Billy. Ultimately, they reconcile, (Eliot says his dad was always a hero to him, Billy say's he's proud of Eliot, they hug), and I cry every time 😭❤️ [Edit: Eliot being a baby at the time of being found at the hospital and consequently brought home by his adopted mother is unconfirmed and my presumption. We have no clear info on his age at adoption. Thanks to @nival-kenival for picking that up!]
Phrases: Ain't
S1 E4 The Snow Job: Said to Nate, right before Nate tells him to go skip some rope.
S1 E9 The Stork Job: Says it twice while conning Irina.
S1 E10 The Juror #6 Job: Upon being told to go help Parker instead of watching a sports game, Eliot takes his beer back.
S2 E2 The Tap-Out Job: Discussing the fights the mark runs, says they ain't the UFC.
S2 E3 The Order 23 Job: Said right before threatening to throw Randy's abusive father over the railing of a stairwell.
S2 E4 The Fairy Godparents Job: Upon spotting a hitman sent to kill McSweeten and Taggart.
S2 E8 The Ice Man Job: After hearing Hardison call himself the Ice Man, says he won't bail him out when things go wrong.
S2 E9 The Lost Heir Job: While trying to get Parker to the court room and end up cut off by the police.
S2 E11 The Bottle Job: When Hardison wants help to clean up Nate's apartment and Eliot refuses.
S2 E14 The Three Strikes Job: When Nate says to meet outside the ballpark but Eliot refuses because now he's sucked into the sport.
S3 E3 The Inside Job: Twice while arguing with Hardison about how to rescue Parker, once when Parker offers him a lift down the stairwell with her on her harness rig and he refuses. This is the most he says ain't in a single episode!
S3 E7 The Gone Fishin' Job: Once when the militia try to make him kneel, later when the militia kid catches him and Hardison near the train tracks.
S3 E11 The Rashomon Job: When Sophie changes her story to mock Eliot's accent and mannerisms.
S3 E15 The Big Bang Job: When confronting Moreau with Hardison.
S4 E1 The Long Way Down Job: Upon arriving at the base camp and complaining to Nate.
S4 E7 The Grave Danger Job: When looking for a buried Hardison and hearing the sprinklers.
S4 E10 The Queen's Gambit Job: At the end, swearing revenge on Sterling.
S4 E12 The Office Job: Arguing with Hardison about Eliot's sandwich while searching the warehouse.
S4 E13 The Girls' Night Out Job: When trying to convince Nate to socialise at the very start.
S4 E14 The Boys' Night Out Job: Exactly the same as the previous episode, so this one barely counts.
S4 E17 The Radio Job: In the patent office, when trying to figure out who lured Nate into this situation. The same scene is used later as a flashback.
S4 E18 The Last Dam Job: Warning Nate of the consequences of taking a life with your own hands.
S5 E2 The Blue Line Job: When ambushed by Marko when leaving the ice rink.
S5 E9 The Rundown Job: Once when going to wring information on the hit out of Riley, once when Hardison steps on the trigger plate of the claymore.
S5 E13 The Corkscrew Job: First time talking to Betty about how Leonard's a jerk.
RS1 E1 The Too Many Rembrandts Job: Twice when ambushed by RIZ thugs in the warehouse.
RS1 E2 The Panamanian Monkey Job: Once when discussing Ryan Corbett at the start, once when refusing to let Hardison have a turn with the diamond-tipped drill.
RS1 E3 The Rollin' On The River Job: When warning Breanna to be certain of her calculations for how to get him and Parker out of the casino's vault.
RS1 E8 The Mastermind Job: Once when discussing hiring people to overthrow a government, once when discussing how they're going to do like 6 things at once, including saving Harry.
RS1 E9 The Bucket Job: Said twice while talking with Blanche, after Blanche helped rescue Eliot from RIZ.
RS1 E14 The Great Train Job: While digging through the tainted soil with Harry.
RS2 E1 The Debutante Job: When trying to get to Volkov's plane with Parker and seeing that two guards are in the way.
RS2 E5 The Walk In The Woods Job: Talking to Paul after rescuing Harry, who was pretending to be Eliot.
Fun fact: for every ain't that Eliot says, Hardison says at least two more. And that's too many for me to bother recording!
Phrases: Y'all
Never. Not even once.
Hardison, on the other hand, says y'all all the damn time - every season, multiple times, sometimes even multiple times in the same episode.
Honourable mention for Chaos saying y'all as an incorrect mockery of Eliot's accent in S3 E14 The Ho Ho Ho Job.
... Okay, okay! So Eliot says it a few times in Redemption! But only in ONE episode!
RS1 E1 The Too Many Rembrandts Job: Said 4 times when playing a character and convincing people to clear out of the auction house.
That's it.
Aliases
These are all the names that Eliot's gone by or used on cons that I could find, not just full blown aliases.

Known Associates
This is in direct reference to hitters/people from the criminal world that Eliot knew or was aware of prior to the Leverage Team. Quinn is not included in this list due to that distinction (sorry Quinn).
S1 E3 The Wedding Job: The Butcher of Kiev
S2 E7 The Two Live Crew Job: Mikel Dayan
S3 E11 The Rashomon Job: Gutman
S3 E15 The Big Bang Job: Chapman, Damien Moreau

S4 E4 The Van Gogh Job: Frank, Randall
S4 E6 The Carnival Job: Roper
S5 E4 The French Connection: Rampone
S5 E9 The Rundown Job: Riley
Trivia
S2 E6 The Top Hat Job: Eliot claims he only sleeps 90 minutes a day, and that he cured his claustrophobia as a kid by locking himself in the woodshed behind his house for a couple nights.
S3 E6 The Studio Job: Eliot is nervous to perform in front of an audience, to the point that Parker startles him and she's surprised that she did. Interesting to note that he seems to have no issue playing sport in front of crowds.
S3 E7 The Gone Fishin' Job: Eliot says he hates beets.
S4 E5 The Hot Potato Job: Eliot chews gum. He does this throughout a LOT of episodes across the seasons but I've only noted down this one episode for it.... thanks, past me 🙄 [Edit: thanks @nival-kenival for more info! Another confirmed episode is S1 E2 The Homecoming Job, and S3 E13 The Morning After Job!]
S4 E9 The Cross My Heart Job: Eliot says he fought a guy with a Nerf sword in Damascus, 2002.
S5 E11 The Low Low Price Job: Eliot drives an F-150 to his dad's house in Oklahoma. This is a THIRD vehicle that apparently belongs to Eliot, in addition to the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Challenger we see in other episodes. The F-150 is not seen again.
S5 E12 The White Rabbit Job: Eliot has 'special sedatives' aka a little psychotropic he picked up outside of Bogota.
Eliot mostly walks at the back of the group, presumably to be the rear guard and make sure no one falls behind. See ... just about every damn episode for evidence.
RS1 E3 The Rollin' On The River Job: Parker says that Eliot has cut his way out of an ice cave, escaped a gorilla enclosure, and catered a wedding for the mob.
Eliot is seen wearing glasses throughout various episodes. A flashback in S1 E1 The Nigerian Job shows him wearing presumably his own glasses. All other instances of him wearing glasses (that I can think of) are when he takes someone's glasses for a con. It is unconfirmed if Eliot actually needs glasses to correct his eyesight or not, but is a fandom headcanon. In S3 E1 The Jailhouse Job there is an interaction where Nate ribs Eliot for taking so long in a fight, and Eliot says it's because of new glasses. An argument could be made that this means Eliot does require glasses. [Thanks @independent-fics for picking this up - for pretty much all the details pertaining to Eliot's glasses!]
And there you have it! All the details that I've spent the last 3 months collecting!! Now it's time for me to take a good, long break because my brain is fried! 😂
Once again, let me know if you find any errors so I can update the post. Data from Redemption S2 is where I've most likely missed things, since I don't have it on DVD and it's sooo much harder to scrub through streaming footage to find things. When will they release RS2 on DVD I need itttt.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! I hope this post can be a helpful reference for you!

Laios Touden and autism; admiring the non-human
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you think people exaggerate when they scream about Laios being autistic? Do you feel like it’s weird that so many people including autistics are so set on Laios, the problematic (but incredible and kind) king TM, being the most autistic that has ever autisticed? Why do we cheer on autistic people wanting to be monsters?? Isn’t that weird?
Well, of course it depends on the way it’s done, it can be done quite offensively, but long story short Kui blew it out of the park. The thing is, autistic people really do like monsters and animals and robots. Nonhuman does not mean subhuman, it just means Other. Feeling a connection with them has been shown to be an extremely common autistic experience for that very reason.
Because some people don’t understand why we autistic Tumblr Laios stans cheer “autism! Autism!” whenever he talks about monsters and feeling alienated to humans so! Here’s a post about how yes even research papers are analyzing the special connection we form with animals. I’m not even joking but Laios Touden & the mass cries of relatability with autistic people he gets and all the love for him could be used as study material and evidence for future papers because the link is that strong. Oh also I think it’s notable that being autistic and undiagnosed vs diagnosed makes a huge difference. In my experience as someone who was undiagnosed up until 18, it’s even more alienating to not know that there’s a reason why you’re different, being gaslit that you’re ‘normal’ and you just need to try harder and get with the program, etc. Personally when getting diagnosed I went through the 5 stages of grief because the thought of having been fundamentally different all your life (a difference which you will never be able to change) and mistreated for it when you weren’t “wrong” all along makes you unload all the anger and sadness and loneliness and sheer trauma you’ve built up over time. Like it’s world shattering.
So! Back to seeing dogs as family. Also I implore you to value experiential evidence when it comes to autism and other neurodivergences because brains are complicated and neurotypicals not being able to understand us well even with scientific research is like, a whole thing even though we’re right there speaking about how we feel and being right every time because the topic is literally us and how we experience the world.
Disclaimer for this whole post that, of course, no group is a monolith and everyone has different experiences or can diverge from the norm of the group, and that doesn’t diminish the validity of either side! Like, I know autistic people who have trauma with dogs and hate them. But, trends do happen, and in this case... Autism is very “My experiences with humans make me feel dehumanized in a bad and lonely way so instead I’ll dehumanize myself in a good and inspiring way”.
“I was treated like a failed human my entire life and you’re surprised that my response was to become a dog.” -Patricia Taxxon
It’s literally well recorded that autistic people relate to animals more than humans globally. With this post, besides spreading autistic Laios truthism and explaining why the portrayal hits so deep for so many,  I want to show in what way this is a very specific experience and not looking at his character through an autistic lense really misses a lot of why he’s everything that he is. (Tacking allegedly onto here for legal reasons, different interpretations are valid etc etc /gen). This honestly isn’t super long though.
To define an important term, anthropomorphism in the studies and in this post means to attribute human traits to the nonhuman, which not only includes anthro furry designs but also animals irl, inanimate objects, and animated media as opposed to live action, to humanize them and empathize with them.
Tumblr media
Paper: https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/aut.2019.0027
Tumblr media
“Dogs taught me how to hunt and socialize and work in groups”, Laios having internalized body language... So real so real. I, too, make a great dog impression. And I want to emphase the part that it helps greatly develop a sense of emotions and relationships! For Laios, he didn’t get along with kids his age, it was him, Falin and the dogs against the world. Since it’s a group of dogs too, it taught him group dynamics and social hierarchies (like with Falin being considered as being below the dogs in authority according to the dogs rip), and the importance of group coordination when hunting.
For me, I cannot like, concisely explain just how much animals were important to me developmentally. I also grew up with dogs, but like I vividly remember encounters with like hamsters as well just radically shaping my understanding of boundaries, the importance of giving something space and the way you interact with them and respect their side of it. Unlike humans they don’t really mask how they feel, it’s direct cause-effect reaction and data gathering. There are no words involved, so the focus on having a perfect phrasing and tone is gone, leaving just pure interactions.
Tumblr media
There’s also no reason to mask how you feel either, and you don’t have to feel silly over wanting to form a connection and it showing, what, is the dog gonna laugh at you because you obviously want to make friends with it? Toshiro or Kabru might, but dogs and cats will just tell you to fuck off and leave it there worst case scenario. I often say that I think one reason Marcille is special to Laios and he feels comfortable around her is because she emotes INTENSELY, she gestures, she puts her whole body into it, her facial expressions are pretty exaggerated and her ears even emote too- like with a dog’s ears!
I think there’s def also things to be said about how he gravitated towards Izutsumi at first, all excited, was eager to sleep in the same bed as her, but in the Izutsumi sleep rating chart we see they really just casual and chill so it’s not a Laios talking to Shuro deep into the night situation just a “I like sleeping besides animals” situation and that is enough to hype him up. I love how he pet her in the extra about why Chil let her sleep with him too. He’s just so transparently eager to befriend her, even if in the end they weren’t all that compatible and he accepted that.
Tumblr media
There are honestly so many examples I could give for this. Like Grandin the famous cow lady.
Tumblr media
More about autism & empathy:
Tumblr media
https://www.spectrumnews.org/news/double-empathy-explained/ (Also mentions a study in which groups of autistic, allistic then a mixed group played a game of telephone and both singular groups had similar levels of information retention, but the mixed group was significantly worse. As an autistic person yeah duh, obviously autistic people are different from one another and can have plenty of interpersonal issues, but communicating with other neurodivergent people feels pretty intuitive and straightforward and comfortable. One of the reasons why neurodivergent people tend to naturally gravitate towards each other I suppose.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ Paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5932358/  For good, extensive summary of why we relate to animals so much you can go to the “anthromorphizing and asd” section of the paper. This paper extends to our widespread liking of cartoons and robots as well. Ok so this is a whole thing I won’t get into here but this is a big reason why a lot of autistic people are agender leaning as well. Genders and queerness in general is a lot about social constructs, and being queer is being marginal to these, not fitting into boxes or challenging those social norms and conventions. Queerplatonic relationships are a great example of this, where the framework of the relationship is platonic but the intangible nature of what it is exactly is the point, not familial not anything but everything at once too, just adoration, I like to say having pets is a bit like it as well, bc obvi it’s not romantic and often not fully familial, very platonic but also sooo much cuddling and adoration and kissing and whatnot that you wouldn’t typically do with a friend or family member. I’ll talk about qpr and labels another day though.
I got carried away but queerness in Dunmeshi is something I 100% want to make a big post on one day. Experiencing the world with different guidelines and not registering things to have the same boxes, sigh. Personally I also relate to Laios on a gender level, “cis by default because I don’t care all that much but if I were to dig deeper I’m probably otherkin and I want to be socially associated with traits of monsters and animalistic rather than man/woman” sighh hard to be a cryptid in this day and age. I wish we had a term like furry but for monsters, I want to be in the fantasy or folk tale genre ty, like changelings. Goshh changelings... You know, the irl myth where people said their neurodivergent kids were fairies’ children instead of human. Diminished physical sense of self means I see myself as some unknowable black  void aesthetic wise, but like in a way that simultaneously makes me feel seen. Like becoming a monster, losing your sense of self but also somehow just being simplified and seen for what you are, it’s weird to try and explain. This post is more about relating to the nonhuman than about seeing yourself as such, but like connect the dots right, that IS an important point of Laios’ character. It’s because our brains literally work different than allistics which makes us feel as other, but also because of social ostracization and functioning in a different way than society at large, living in the margin of society, being weird and non-conforming.
Meanwhile, animals and social norms... Like ok, showing your neck and rolling on the ground to show that you’re friendly and harmless and play biting might not be proper. But have you considered that it’s also fun and feels very intuitive. Play with a dog in the dog’s way I promise it is so nice and freeing. Play tug of war and growl back when they growl. Hiss at your cat to tell them they do something wrong, engage with them on their level.
Tumblr media
Autism made social life hard, but it made animals easy. Do you have anyyy idea how good it feels to mask all day every day and feel constantly misunderstood or like you’re doing a performance but then you can just, drop all of that in the company of animals and they understand you. They understand you. You form an understanding and rapport so easily.
And this whole thing with Laios is so explicit too, with the Winged Lion saying “You’re sick and tired of the human world”. Notice the choice of words. Sick and tired of the human world. Exhausted from the constraints, sick of the mind games. It really isn’t as much about loving monsters as it is about loving the nonhuman. Relating to them because you feel that you can actually understand how they work and think, and feeling like they could understand you back as well. Animals are safe.
Tumblr media
Like I could go on about how Laios admiring even just demi-humans like orcs is because they’re socially seen as non-humans more than any true physical thing, that they’re not bound by human society and its rules and live with their own lifestyle. But it would deal myself 1000 points of psychic damage and I am not ready to cry today. It’s idealization 100%, and like, Laios DOES want to be treated as human, to be valued, but it feels like an unreachable thing meanwhile becoming a monster is instant gratification and freedom and a sense that now no one will be able to hurt you in a way that reaches you, never again shall you be defenseless, and then if people dehumanize you then that only strengthens your sense of identity as a monster and UGHH ugh ugh.
And like. This post is a mess at this point but if you want to kinda delve into the more “why” then I recommend this Patricia Taxxon video essay. It starts out on a very different topic, but it’s all about autism and finding comfort in the inhuman. Long story short is othering made us like this also animals are just simpler to intuitively get along with.
So when I post this
Tumblr media
I mean it. I really mean it when I say he’s me. I have never felt so seen. So many conflicting emotions all wrapped so concisely yet so intangibly woven into the whole storyline so subtly.
Not being depicted as a monster of an human being for feeling/having felt that way?? The manga understands you. The world can understand you. Other humans can understand you. You can bond with them. You can. And I think that’s a big part of Dungeon Meshi too- Laios opening up to others about how he really is and his interests, and all the bumps on the way but how it was the only way to truly get to know each other and bond. With the climax being Laios confronting head on his complex with monsters and humans, and his monster-loving side and animalistic side being exactly what saves the whole world, what saves humanity. Because Laios does value his friends, does think humanity has beautiful sides to it, he wants to help it thrive and eat and become more accepting, carving out a kingdom for misfits and demi-humans. At the end of it, transforming into a monster and being free is a daydream fantasy, and the reality of it is that Laios does belong in the world as he is, and does receive and give out love.
If you enjoyed this you’ll probably like some of my other Laios analysis!  Here’s an analysis of his succubus and what it says about his relationships with other humans. And here’s an analysis about his relationship with Shuro from his perspective.

I can’t stop thinking about Remus representing jealousy and envy, in the same way Roman isn’t just creativity, he’s also ego, pride, and passion. It always felt a little lopsided to me that they were halves a whole, and yet Roman has all this extra stuff. But what if Remus has some extra stuff of his own, things that mirror Roman’s extra stuff.
Consider the feeling you get when you work very hard on something creative, something you’re proud of, only for your work to be passed over for someone else. Consider the envy you might feel when someone else succeeds in the same area you wish you could. Even when it’s a friend, someone you care about, that feeling creeps up sometimes. Don’t you deserve the recognition just as much as they do, if not more? Or maybe, they made something better than you, and you wish it was yours. Either way, that’s envy. Wanting something someone else has.
Alternatively, consider jealousy, in a romantic sense. The moments when your partner seems to click with someone else, or someone flirts with them, or they’re just plain spending more time with other people than you. It happens, it’s normal. But you can’t help that niggling sense of jealousy in the back of your mind, fueled by insecurity and fear of losing the one you love, that some might take what’s yours away from you. Maybe you imagine in great detail what they’re doing right now, or any number of scenarios in which they leave you or cheat on you. You know you’re being irrational, but even so it’s hard to put those thoughts to rest.
In both cases, these aren’t wanted feelings, but they’re there anyway, a lot like intrusive thoughts (and in fact in some situations they can be a form of intrusive thought!), and they’re also both extensions of things that Roman represents. Envy and jealousy are both forms of desire tempered with ego and insecurity.
So, where Roman is pride in your work, and desire and passion for your partner, and Remus is wondering why someone else got rewarded for their work and you didn't, and the fear someone will take away the one you love.
In other words, Remus makes you green with envy.

Yuji can finally have his own Human Earthworm with blobkuna haha
it seems to me that gege is really fond of metaphors and stories within stories, so i took a closer look at the human earthworm series that was given to us in the anime/manga and i found a lot of interesting things that, as usual, i'm going to turn into a sukuita essay. (sorry for the overly long rant coming up, anon ;-;)
the basic plot of the 4th movie is that an ordinary man is transformed into a half-worm, half-human creature by an evil scientist/doctor. the human earthworm manages to escape but is forced to hide from the outside world as he will be perceived as a monster because of his appearance. however, his hiding place also enables him to meet an animal rights activist who ends up falling in love with him. she is a very understanding, compassionate, and empathetic person (remind you of someone?) and although she is scared of him at first, she looks past his "monstrous appearance" to find the true person within, and he is ultimately more human than other humans are.
in the end, though, he is killed by the girl's friends, who only see a monster. before they attack him, though, she tells them that they will be the monsters for killing him.
this theme of the humans being more monstrous than the actual monsters themselves, such as in literature like frankenstein by mary shelley or the metamorphosis by franz kafka, is a theme used to invert and reframe the popular myths and stories of monsters both looking abnormal and being unnatural.
so... what does this mean in relation to sukuna and yuuji's story?
i think it's pretty clear that sukuna was perceived as monstrous from his birth onward. in historical japan, during the heian era, there was a lot of conflict between different religions and very rapid changes in culture and lifestyles as people began breaking away from chinese influences. this era is sometimes called the "golden age of the imperial court" because of the court's growing power and cultural prosperity, and a lot of this power resided with the Fujiwara clan who had intermarried with the imperials. however, for the majority of ordinary people, this era saw a lot of suffering, hardships, low quality of life, and a high infant mortality rate.
sukuna was born into this starving world and would have died had he not eaten his twin in the womb. but he was unwanted and unwelcome from the moment he was born. i've written this before (so i'm sorry if it's getting a bit repetitive) but i think a lot of fans don't realize how much more demanding and cruel life was during this time (compared to modern day japan) in terms of life expectancy and quality. and those factors shaped sukuna into what he is, or at least make up a part of his becoming a monster.
Tumblr media
in sukuna's own words his existence itself is anathema. the literal definition of this is "vehement disliking" and is a synonym of abhorrent. in religious usage it means "exclusion from the society of the faithful because of heresy" and it is described as being "cursed."
sukuna was perceived as being a curse before he even became cursed objects. whether or not he was born with extra limbs and/or lots of cursed energy, he was still seen as something unnatural and inhuman.
in other words, his unusual appearance and origin is monstrous to others. and i think he took this to heart and decided to just go with it, because he refuses to be seen as human by anyone even though he was in fact born one. he would rather be feared and despised as an imaginary demon than treated like a real person who was essentially cast out of the normal world.
but yuuji doesn't treat sukuna like just another monster in the end. instead, he offers him such selfless acceptance and honest empathy. and i don't think sukuna can take something like that.
sukuna is very aware of his own nature. he seems really proud to be an unfeeling, indifferent entity of chaos.
Tumblr media
hm.....
lots of thoughts on this one panel alone. but i'll try to keep my ideas short. i believe that sukuna embraced what others saw as his "cursed nature" and became the strongest so he could be above all the hatred and ignorance that made others perceive him as being a monster. so he matched his actions to what people feared from him.
he became the monster so he could look down on those same people and also so he could isolate himself from ever being affected by those feelings again. after all, those others are nothing more than weak prey who shouldn't lament their own suffering, just like he shouldn't lament being seen as cursed from birth on. just like he claims he isn't lonely because only the most selfish can be on top.
but still. people want to destroy him for just being the role they more than likely forced him into. he never became more than what people saw him as, and yet they still hate him.
he claims to be above that hatred, but i think it might actually get to him. while else would he reflect so much on it during his fight with yuuji. yuuji, who he lived inside of, who he looks down on for being "weak" because he is far too emotional and caring for others, yet that's one of the biggest reasons for yuuji's strength. strength sukuna tries to undervalue because he can't stand the idea that strength can ever be compassionate as well.
yuuji hates sukuna's ideals and his indifference to the value of life. but he still accepts sukuna. he sees past the monstrous appearance and realizes sukuna was made into a monster by chance. what if someone was there for him, like wasuke was there for yuuji? even though wasuke still pushed yuuji away and was all that yuuji had, he still kept yuuji tethered to being a good person and caring for others. wasuke served as both a lesson in what not to become and a reminder for yuuji to realize the importance of life.
sukuna probably didn't have that, or if he was given that chance, it was far too late for him.
yuuji actually wanted to live with sukuna. he wanted to the animal rights activist to sukuna's worm monster, but in the end, sukuna chose death.
the humans killed the monster they made, yet again. sukuna would rather live and die as a curse than be anything different. yuuji loved him even as a worm, but sukuna couldn't take it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yuuji looks so heart-broken and disappointed for it.
also. i didn't notice this until now. but yuuji cradles sukuna's remains so so gently... in the hand that looks monstrous.
Tumblr media
monster to monster. yet yuuji was so tender. he didn't seek to mock sukuna. instead, he said that they were the same. that sukuna is him.
yuuji was created for the purpose of housing sukuna inside of him, for being his vessel. he was made into a "monster" but instead of letting that turn him into something evil, he used his abilities to save other people. and he even wanted sukuna to come back to him!!!
again, i'm sorry for making this into yet another paper-long incoherent rant. i probably should have stuck to my original reply which was "sad we couldn't see their halfling children ;-;" but then this happened instead. thank you for bearing with me if you read through the mess of my thoughts. ty for your wonderful ask anon <3

Nightwing: Brothers In Blood is such a fucking hilarious comic for DickJay content, given the bulk of the plot is Jason deciding to dress up as Nightwing and kill people which, Dick predictably is not fond of, as a concept.
There's so much in that arc that makes me unwell. Dick straight up saying he wishes Jason had died. The way they instantly banter when they run into each other before Dick gets mad at Jason for dressing up as Nightwing, then Jason begs Dick to work with him.
But what I think gets me the most is the outright confirmation of how even now, Jason still has a serious case of hero worship for Dick and just wants to be like him and get his approval.
Tumblr media
nightwing (1996) #120
There's such a complex Jason has over Dick and it makes me Unwell. Jason identifying with Dick, wanting his attention, his approval. His love, even. I mean, later on when Jason gets kidnapped, in his mind he hallucinates Dick talking to him and it outright confirms he wants Dick to save him and Jason has a doomsday spiral about Dick not saving him, through his mental image of Dick.
Tumblr media
nightwing (1996) #121
Jason wants Dick in his life, there's so much unrequited love and weirdness between them. They're so not normal about each other. Later on he sends Dick a note saying he just wishes they could be family again and I think it's so unhinged of Jason. Dressing up as Dick, just because of how much he loves and respects Dick. So much potential in that.
Also aside from all of that complex this comic is also hilarious for the bit it has where Dick accidentally takes a job as a model and has to dress up as Nightwing, specifically Jason!Nightwing because of the sex appeal Cheyenne (the woman Dick is seeing) thinks it has. And when he's on the runway and sees Jason in the audience he just jumps at Jason, in front of everyone, to beat the shit out of him, while dressed as Nightwing. Which the public thinks is a planned stunt to bank on the weird Sexy Rivalry between the two Nightwings currently running around. It's the most unhinged thing and I think it's so funny. Dick's sort-of-girlfriend makes him dress up as Nightwing!Jason because she thinks it's hot and it'll sell, then Dick beats Jason up in front of everyone, still dressed as Nightwing (specifically Jason), and it reads as a sexy performance modeling piece.
Tumblr media
nightwing (1996) #120
Imagine being so weirdly homoerotic about your sort of kind of brother figure that you can't hesitate fighting him when you're supposed to be modeling and everyone thinks the tension is so good it's a part of the show. These two cannot leave each other alone with their weird tangled feelings for each other. I love it dearly.

I’m taking a big ol’ swing with this one so everyone please keep your limbs inside the vehicle until we reach our destination (let me cook)
So, what happened here? For this to go from-
Tumblr media
Goofy ass grin <3
Tumblr media
Summer: “Trust me..”
To this-
Tumblr media
Raven: “The creatures of Grimm have a master named Salem. She can’t be stopped, she can’t be reasoned with, and she will not rest until humanity crumbles at her feet.”
Tumblr media
Raven: To Ruby with disdain, “You sound just like your mother.”
Let me lay some of my cards on the table. I’m in the “Summer is still alive” camp and I got thoughts on: if Summer is still alive, why has she not been in Yang and Ruby’s life?
Not even a peep? For 14 years?
Something BIG had to have happened to her to keep her away from them.
Now, a lot of folks will go straight to where Ruby jumped to: Summer got Grimm hound-ed by Salem
But I think that’s takes a lot of agency away from Summer and the building revelation of her character and the purpose she serves in the narrative.
If Summer has been grimmified, I posit it was by her own doing, by choice. And her choice alone.
Tumblr media
Qrow: “You’re special the same way your mom was…The creatures of Grimm were afraid of those silver eyed warriors.”
Tumblr media
Salem: “Do you feel it? Don’t fight it girl. It can sense your trepidation. You must make it dread you.”
How does Salem illustrate the melding of Cinders flesh with the Grimm arm and mastery over it?
In the few instances we get, how are silver eyes described in their effect on Grimm? Obliteration, yes. Resistance to their influence? Possibly (see Ruby & the apathy). But command over them? Let’s explore that.
We are working with a pretty small dataset here, so you’ll forgive me for mostly drawing from Cinder for this (separate post I think the hound is a reanimated corpse and so different from true living hybrids like Cinder (& hypothetically Summer)).
Grimm evolve and Grimm hybrids, like Cinder, adapt.
From vol4 to vol8, Cinder’s Grimm arm grows. It spreads. And she becomes more comfortable with it as time progresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cinders Grimm arm has become an integral part of her and, side note, I dislike theories that revolve her hypothetical redemption around her being purified of evil (Grimm) by silver eyes.
[But that’s just me, I want the monstrous to stay monstrous rather than erased or watered down for easy digestion. Let the monster stay a monster in its appearance and still be worthy of love, and so on and so forth.]
So, we come back to Summer Rose.
Summer confronted Salem, learned something earth shattering, destroyed Raven’s faith and trust in her, and did something that prevented her from returning to her daughters for more than a decade.
What did Summer do? Agency, we’re thinking strong choices here.
Choices that are radical but in line for a character with strong convictions, an alluded to pedestal she stands upon and all the complexes that comes with, perhaps a little self destructive, and a big heart. Big enough to sympathize with the devil and do something about it.
The thing that could be preventing Summer from returning home could be as simple as:
After she learned the truth about Oz’s shadow war, she joined Salem’s side, and won’t return until she’s seen it through to the end.
But I want to put some spice on there because what if:
Tumblr media
After learning whatever it was Salem told Summer, that turned her world upside down, Summer looked down into the pools of black and took the plunge
To understand Salem on a molecular level
To be Grimm as Salem is Grimm
To be a world changer
In the world of Remnant, that’s what the Grimm are. A force of destructive change, like hurricanes and wildfires, they shape the world through calamity. Disaster doesn’t feel any one way about you, it just is. It is devastating, but it doesn’t hate you. And it doesn’t love you either.
So, what would that make Summer?
How do you think that’s changed her, fundamentally?
Tumblr media
Bloody evolution indeed.
And that’s why she stayed away. Summer changed, and now she looks a little more on the outside how she feels on the inside. But to the rest of the world, she is something horrifying. Unspeakable.
She didn’t want to give her girls nightmares.
Yeah, Summer was the inspiration for the Hound, and Cinder’s Grimm arm. But not in the way Ruby thinks.

The Right Thing
₊•.°.⋆✮ A Season Seven Theory Post ✮⋆.°.•₊
Exploring the recurring theme of what "the right thing" is in The Dragon Prince, and how that will play into Season Seven.
Tumblr media
Part One: The Past
Before we can talk about Season Seven and why this is important, we need to talk about the past six seasons and the role that "the right thing" has played in them. And there's a lot, so buckle up.
The first character that we're shown having to grapple with "the right thing to do" is Rayla, though the words aren't actually uttered. She is faced with having to kill Marcos, the guard who discovered her and the other assassins. But while the others believe that killing Marcos is the right thing, she doesn't, and she lets him go.
She does what she believes is right. She's brave. She's a hero.
The next time we see this is with Soren, only a few episodes later.
Tumblr media
And what Soren says is "The right thing. I... I don't know if I can do that."
Soren and Rayla share a lot of parallels, and I think that this will continue to be true in season seven. Viren and Runaan also share a lot of parallels, which I think plays into the Rayla - Soren parallels (I eventually plan to do a meta on this, but we'll see when I get to it)
I feel it's important to note that in this scene, the right thing is referred to as a burden.
And the line comes back later, when Soren, similarly to Rayla, discovers his heroic side and does what he believes is right rather than what he's been told was right.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Rayla parallels, because that is the direction this post is headed as a whole, let's talk about the Rayla - Claudia parallels as well. Claudia is told by her father that retrieving the egg of the Dragon Prince is the most important thing. Even above saving her brother. She has to do it for the greater good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what does she choose?
Tumblr media
She chooses Soren over the egg. She chooses her family over the "greater good". Some might argue that she made the right choice.
So now let's talk about
Tumblr media
Part Two: The Present
That's right The Right Thing™ is an abstract that has haunted The Dragon Prince since season one and continues to do so to this day. And I think it's only going to play an even bigger role in Season Seven. Especially between Rayla and Callum.
I feel like in Arc One The Right Thing™ primarly haunted the Magefam. Soren and Claudia both had to grapple with their own versions, and while it did play a role in Rayla's story, she was fairly certain of what The Right Thing™ was, even if it took strength to do it. But in Arc Two, it's played much more of a role in Rayla and Callum's lives because it's not as clear. And that is when The Right Thing™ is at it's best; when the characters don't know which is right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rayla makes it clear to Callum what she thinks The Right Thing™ is. But as we've seen in previous seasons, when someone tells you what the right thing is, it's rarely the thing you end up doing. Because the right thing is different to everyone. And I think that Season Six and this scene between Rayla and Callum left that open ended on purpose.
We, the audience know that Rayla was telling Callum to "do the right thing. Make the sacrifice." AKA to let Rayla die. To let her be the sacrifice.
But what do we know about Callum?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's right. And where have we seen this kind of mentality, this kind of language before?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right again. The Magefam, who were haunted by The Right Thing™ in Arc One.
Rayla countered Callum's "I would do anything for you." by asking something of him. Asking him to "do the right thing. Make the sacrifice."
In return, Callum asked something of her;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two promises.
Two promises I think they will break in Season Seven.
Tumblr media
Part Three: The Future
That's right, theory time! So if The Right Thing™ has been haunting us this whole time, what has it been haunting us for? I think there a bunch of different options, but taking all the context (and a whole lot of screen shots) let's try and piece something together.
First of all, we have the trigger.
All of this hinges on Rayla and Callum breaking their promises, or more accurately I suppose, having different interpretations of what The Right Thing™ is.
So first of all, we have the situation where Rayla is in danger, and Callum would need to use Dark Magic to save her. I personally feel like this is almost definitely going to happen.
Tumblr media
We literally get this shot in the trailer. And yes, the cube is in it's strange, dream version. But the background doesn't match any Dark Magic dream we've seen before. PLUS why would Callum be having a Dark Magic dream if he hadn't done Dark Magic? Potentially this scene could be taking place inside a second Dark Magic dream, the way that Viren had two because he died, Callum might have two because his soul was purified and he's having to re-corrupt it.
But whatever the case, I feel like it's safe to assume that Callum will end up using Dark Magic again in this season, one way or another.
Which means he broke his promise to Rayla. He didn't do The Right Thing™.
Or did he? This is where it gets interesting.
Rayla told him to "do the right thing. Make the sacrifice." meaning herself as the sacrifice and letting her die as the right thing. But as we've established throughout this whole, long winded mess of an essay, The Right Thing™ rarely means the same thing to different people.
So maybe, to Callum, he did "do the right thing. Make the sacrifice." He saved Rayla, which he feels is The Right Thing™. And he made the sacrifice. Himself. His Soul. The World.
Tumblr media
According to his RPG character sheet, Callum is pretty clear about what he believes and who he values. And he might just choose Rayla over the world. But what will Rayla choice? Will she do... The Right Thing™?
From 04x05 - The Great Gates Soren: We have to do something, Rayla: No. We can't risk being seen. I hate it too, but we have to keep moving. Let's go! Soren: But it's an innocent dragon, and he's hurting it. That was something you cared about. Didn't they call you a Dragonguard? Rayla: We can't save everyone, Soren. There's too much at stake.
So... if Callum would choose Rayla over the world, would Rayla choose the world over Callum? In some ways, I think we've been set up to believe that yes, she would.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But at the same time...
Tumblr media
What is The Right Thing™? Is it killing Callum and keeping her promise, or is it searching for a way to save him? Can she really keep her promise? I don't think she will. I think that

Even with TBOB and thisisnotawebsite.com there's... Still so much we don't know about Bill. Like ok yeah he's given a tragic background, we know a bit more about his henchmaniacs, but we really don't know a lot. Like, what happened directly after he accidentally destroyed his dimension? It isn't said. Sure time baby KNOWS about Bill's destruction of his dimension, but it seems like he didn't show up after Bill's dimension was destroyed to apprehend him because he only knows about Bill after Bill tries to make a deal with him, causing Bill's wanted poster. And how did Bill become basically the overlord of the nightmare realm, and gather all his henchmaniacs? Like there's a good period where we just don't know. And it's implied he's shocked and horrified (likely even dissociates, since he does that) after he destroys his dimension. But his characterization doesn't seem by that point to be one that immediately goes into a self-destructive, violent god-becoming maniacal spiral of self hatred; it's more one to be overwhelmed with grief and spend a good long time in the midst of his grief, then necessarily he's about to DO anything. And generally speaking trope wise, there's steps missing; typically in this sort of scenario, the usual progression is this:
characterized as monster due to being different in some way
tries to prove their not
ends up hurting someone anyways
gets further villainized, and antagonized by others
Acceptance of being a monster, and goes okay? You wanted a monster? I'll be a monster.
Now this fits Bill's early life, up to number 4, but we don't know what happens immediately after. It's possible he just went into his spiral immediately after, but it feels wrong, because it is missing the part of someone further villainizing him beyond himself which causes him to lash out due to the expectation (and internalized) idea that he would cause harm. I'd assume maybe some kind of interdimensional authority showed up and accused him of purposely trying to kill his dimension, which triggered his "okay, then I'll be a monster", or even a situation where his 'monstrosity' through the badge of killing his dimension is garners him respect. Considering that his henchmaniacs are chosen out of monstrosity and violence as a badge of honor, it feels very much like this would make sense, except none of them really know about Bill's dimension. He doesn't brag about the violence of it; he only calls it a liberation, contrary to the idea that Bill ever used it to gain clout. Instead, it's more likely that an interdimensional authority showed up and accused Bill, except from circumstances, it doesn't seem like it was Time Baby, so not sure who it would be... but at the same time, that expectation is often required for the character to truly embrace their 'monstrosity' and become truly violent. Or perhaps it was delayed after the destruction of his dimension, later when he begins to run with his henchmaniacs and disregards the law, but that also doesn't feel satisfactory for character development. Or perhaps I'm just overthinking this trope...
Also, how did he have his powers? Some is clearly stuff he's always had; pyrokinesis from that one rhyme, the ability to see into 3d, and he was somehow able to destroy his dimension by whatever he did to let Euclydians see the stars (telekinesis?), but beyond that? Was he always all-seeing? How did he become a 'dream demon'? Are his deals actually binding or does he lie? Are these things that he acquired later, because Euclydians seem to be written about as if they usually don't have any of these abilities, nor the abilities Bill is known to have when young, nor did Bill seem to be able to be all seeing when he was younger. Plus, how was Bill able to survive the destruction of his dimension, if he's technically made of the same stuff as everyone else, who all seems to have a physical form? Why then does he seems to be characterized as a being made of pure energy and thought; is that just in Earth's dimension, or does he have a physical form within the nightmare realm? There's multiple things that are contradictory about his body (mouth-eye, yet talked about removing his exoskeleton to feed--not sure exactly when this was mentioned--plus his mouth located under his bricks and bowtie in his exoskeleton in journal 3). But he seems so thrilled by his physical form though on earth, and we know that physical forms exist within the Nightmare realm as Ford was in it... yet it seems like hes characterized to have no physical form, so did he perhaps lose his physical form when his dimension died? Did he technically die with them too, but with his powers was able to survive essentially as a ghost like he tells Dipper you become without a body?

No one is born knowing how to communicate
A: And that's okay...
Dr Kuseno made it look so easy. He just swanned into Saitama's apartment, proferred him a gift of beef and the hero's hostility melted away.
Tumblr media
Fubuki felt positively foolish, and yet encouraged.
Tumblr media
Since then, however, she's found that the only thing meat bribes pull in are dogs. Literal dogs:
Tumblr media
And even dogs need more than meat to be loyal.
Tumblr media
What gives? Well, it's obvious that Fubuki mistook Dr Kuseno's gift for a bribe: more on that later. Probably. And yeah, it's funny, but it's more interesting than that.
Learning how to communicate is complex. There are a ludicrous number of unspoken conventions and rules in every human society, so much so that we don't fully learn how to smile socially until we're in our forties. Dr Kuseno carefully judged his gift: he had a legitimate reason to offer Saitama a gift in the first place, out of gratitude for Saitama going out of his way to mentor Genos. Then he chose a gift Saitama would be sure to appreciate and presented it at a time when Saitama would be thinking about dinner. The worst that could have happened is that Saitama took the gift but insisted on the doctor going home (and taking Genos with him) -- it would still have left the desired positive impression. And things went really well. Kuseno made it look effortless.
Fubuki is only in her early twenties and her experience to date has been far from typical. She's learned that either she can intimidate people or she can flatter them into doing what she wants. With Saitama (and later Bang, Bomb, and Kuseno), she has to learn how to talk to more powerful people whom she cannot overpower, over whom she has no leverage, and who are unimpressed by her looks, simpering, or flattery.
Fortunately, Fubuki is nothing if not astute. She's worked out that she needs to develop complementary skills if she's to make herself useful to the S-Class heroes she wants to hang with. How to talk to them to get the help and cooperation she desires? Ah, that's a work in progress.
B: ...Unless it's not
Let's move onto another miscommunication.
Something that I hadn't before was that, unlike the webcomic version where Saitama only thinks to himself that Genos seems depressed, in the manga, Saitama out and out asks him if this is the case. He wants to know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It mirrors King asking Saitama that very same question and getting Saitama to open up and be vulnerable for the first time (ever, in any version of the story). So it is very appropriate to see Saitama trying to do the same for Genos, particularly as he is openly fond of the guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, it goes wrong. Saitama feels himself under pressure to say something wise to make it better. So he puts on his best 'confident' face and inadvertently makes everything much worse. Oh dear. What makes this particularly painful in the manga is that Saitama is much more invested in trying to reach Genos, and it's made Genos think that Saitama saying that he doesn't see what he's doing must mean that earlier times when he's praised him must have been just Saitama being nice. For sure, Genos could have pushed back and made Saitama clarify what he meant, but he's even worse at communicating: and Saitama's glib remark about being bright struck him square in the insecurities.
Tumblr media
I'm going to come to something that I only realised once I started typing this up. Even though I've pointed out their abilities to communicate, neither King nor Kuseno have the perfect words to say. Kuseno started out by first committing a faux pas in bringing his great big outside boots into Saitama's flat, then nearly boring Saitama to death with a long-winded explanation. King started out by trying to guess what was bothering Saitama. Both, however, did the most important thing about effective communication: they picked up on their going wrong and changed tack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not about saying the right thing: it's about responding to the person you're talking to.
The thing that King did that Saitama was trying to do for Genos was to ask Saitama open questions, and shut up in the interim, letting Saitama talk to fill in the silence. He'd only speak to ask more open questions when Saitama ran out of things to say, and through that, gently started to challenge Saitama's thinking.
Tumblr media
But doing so means being comfortable with several seconds of silence. And that is excruciating. It is almost irresistible to jump in and say something, anything. And it would have been a longish wait, for Genos to slowly sit down and decide to start speaking, which might well have started being about something only tangentially related to his worry. King did that for Saitama: Saitama started out talking about what was bothering him on the surface -- being too strong -- before eventually coming to what was really bothering him, feeling lonely and profoundly isolated from everyone around him. Saitama does not yet know how to wait a person out.
Tumblr media
It's a problem in this case because it's introduced a big barrier between those two, not an insurmountable one for sure, but one that could easily compound later.
Ah well, no one is born a communicator. We just have to wait and see if they work out a way to open up and be honest with each other. So it goes! There's more ways to introduce conflicts than to have a monster trample Tokyo, after all!
And so help me, the struggle to learn how to communicate is 1000% worthwhile.

finally saw Lisa Frankenstein
SPOILERS BELOW
i love that this movie is about true love and the writing has no compunction about needing to pretend like true love has to be between moral people - soulmates can be kind of selfish assholes who are nonetheless absolutely perfect for each other and tender and good to each other
and i love, after choking on so many heroines who are so pure it's inhuman in recent YA (which I largely only read for canon f/f) for Lisa to just be... so id-tastic and her story to be driven by the intense feelings of teenage girl coming-of-age stuff that gets prettied up and erased
she was internalizing her pain the way a good girl is "supposed to" -she was hurting so much that she wished she was dead with him. instead, he comes to her and they BOTH come more and more alive as he kills the people who hurt her. in increasingly "unfair" ways because it's not about right & wrong
he's kind of her dark side, speaking to and expressing the things she's shoved down inside along with her will to live - as he acts those things out, as she is complicit and eggs it on, covering for him and feeding him the attempted rapist as a victim, her will to live comes back
but they don't do the "maleficent" (and the whole "bad girl but in a safe way" kind of story) thing of making Lisa's dark side "safe" and her only fairly getting revenge - the darkness the Creature speaks to and acts out is not fair, it is not safe or contained.
instead of internalizing her pain, Lisa shares in externalizing it and making other people hurt and she blossoms into herself. and who she is is a bit cringe in the best possible way? she's embracing her own life energy, or own crazy selfish lustful weird set of desires.
it's about Lisa's feelings and what she WANTS, morals enter nowhere into it. except when it comes to Taffy - the one person who really tried to love her at her most broken. everyone else abandoned Lisa emotionally--including her father--but Taffy tried to be there, as awkward as that could be at times
Tumblr media Tumblr media
speaking of which: Taffy and Lisa make an interesting contrast to Needy and Jennifer from Jennifer's Body (also a film by Diablo Cody and she says they both take place in the same storyverse). both Jennifer and Lisa decide that what makes them feel most alive is embracing their inner monster, but Taffy doesn't go all "i have to kill the beast" the way Needy does. i like this much better. Taffy is wearing Lisa's mom's rosary at the end and, by doing so, accepting Lisa's "I love you" despite everything Lisa did. whereas Needy ends up ripping off the BFF necklace and rejecting Jennifer's love. In my mind the two films are a tale of two necklaces now lol - one where the "good" girl rejects the monster girl and the other where she accepts that love and carries it with her.

so i'm sure we all watched arcane and came away with the same incredibly pressing question that i did: what would a welfare system in piltover/zaun look like?
ok, but like, for real, i got to thinking about how exactly this would work and what structural inequalities i could see in the world of arcane that would end up weakening a welfare system in zaun. because one way that the welfare system becomes discriminatory is through welfare fraud and what exactly constitutes as welfare fraud. bear with me here:
welfare fraud can be defined as misleading the government to gain access to more money than would have originally been allocated to you. it's the specific actions that are considered welfare fraud, however, that makes this a more contentious subject.
for example, not reporting a spouse in the home can count as welfare fraud. which sounds good on paper, right? because it takes into account the relationships and other ways someone might be making money? well, what they don't show explicitly is that this works to isolate people from possible romantic partners. because if they stay overnight and an agent of the state decides to check in randomly, that would count as fraud. basically cracking down on having partners + trapping some people in domestic abuse situations with the threat of reporting them for fraud hanging over the recipients head by their abuser.
another way that welfare fraud can technically be committed is by finding unreported supplemental sources of income. on the surface level i can understand why someone might look at that and think, "oh well technically they're misleading the government so its understandable why this would be considered fraud." well, this doesn't really think about the fact that sometimes the welfare provided by the government isn't enough to live off of so its necessary to rely on outside sources for help. basically, theyve criminalized having a job outside of welfare support and that if you dont report that you have a job, then youre taking advantage of the system and scamming, even if just the government's welfare isn't enough to live off of in the first place.
and if we loop around to the question of "why dont people ask for help from neighbours/the communtiy" then we get the answer that the government fostered an obligation for people to report welfare fraud through setting up tip lines and running news campaigns calling perpertrators of welfare fraud 'cheats' that were 'stealing money from deserving people.' which creates this awful sort of environment where you cant reach out for help because someone might report you and you cant live and support, say for example, you and your kids with what the government gives you, so you have to resort to technically commiting fraud by just. having a job on the side.
so then, why does this matter??? why do you need to think about this stuff when you consider the (kind of useless) question of what a welfare system in zaun would look like?
well, if you're super into the politics of it all, like me, you could see that a potential welfare system in zaun would lead to a more isolatory form of oppression from piltover that would lead to a further breakdown of something zaunites are seen to rely on in s1act1: community.
in s1 act1, through the bar meetings that seem to work as council meetings, we see that community is something that's valued by zaunites. and that making group decisions is something that strengthens community and makes each citizen feel like they have a voice in this larger issue.
now, lets say that we set up a welfare system in zaun and that its piltover who finances it, as a way to reach out and help out the impoverished. and that this system has the same regulations around welfare fraud that the real world has.
what we get from this is a weakening of community support that zaunites rely on when already in awful situations, which further pushes people down that funnel of isolation and poverty through a system that's supposed to help, on paper. and of course, welfare fraud is illegal, so in reaching out for help, zaunites essentially open themselves to getting arrested and brutalized by enforcers for daring to reach out for help in the first place.
now, we already know that the enforcers in arcane are meant to be an oppressive force: we're literally beat over the head with that point in the opening scene. but i sort of feel like the enforcers end up as purely violent representations of zaun's oppression. in a world where there's a welfare system in zaun that is policed so that fraud doesn't go unpunished, the enforcers would work not just as a physically violent force but also as an invading one. the privacy of the citizens of zaun would be violated by enforcers who, if we're following the idea that the welfare system in arcane would function similarly to the real world, can barge in without a warrant just on "suspicion of wrongdoing."
a large aspect of how screwed up welfare fraud and the system in general can be relies heavily on how racism makes all these problems about nine times worse for racialized groups. in the world of arcane, we don't see any evidence that racism necessarily exists. but we know that society will find a way to create arbitrary heirarchies no matter how they manifest. so the question is what would be the, for lack of a better word, stand-in here?
i want to propose that shimmer and the physical warping of the body it causes, as it would create a group of people who would be suspected of welfare fraud by enforcers by immediate first impression alone.
there are some states in the us and a similar proposal in canada a few years ago that calls for drug testing welfare recipients. one argument for this policy is that it deters drug use. which is very harmful not just because it disqualifies people from welfare for up to two years at a time, but also because people who struggle with substance abuse might benefit the most from the support the government is offering.
if we look at this with the context of shimmer and how it works in the universe of arcane (how it can be used to self-medicate the way we see with the council member do in season 2) then we end up with a welfare system in arcane that ultimately works in a very problematic way.
(there's an argument to be made that due to the nature of the undercity following silco's takeover, there would be more incentive for the chembarons and other bad-faith actors to blackmail citizens into working with them/enabling crime by threatening to report them and essentially ruining their lives).
if this is hard to follow, that's understandable! let me paint you a picture that compounds a few of these concepts into a possible scenario:
you are a single parent in zaun who suffered from an injury about five years ago that put you out of a job. you self-medicated with shimmer once a long time ago that has physically warped your body, but managed to wean yourself off of it.
now, you apply for welfare from piltover because despite the injury occuring years ago, it still affects you and your ability to work today. you get your welfare benefits, which are marginal, but they still help you and your child live a bit better than you were before!
lets say you mention, in passing, that youre on welfare to an aqcuaintance of yours in a busy bar. a few weeks after, you get knocking at your door before there's an enforcer in your home, armed, asking you for documentation of income and to do a drug test immediately upon seeing you, because the shimmer warping your body has indicated to him that you might be a drug user.
in the weeks before the enforcer came, you managed to get employment with light hours as a janitor at that same bar. the most you do is sweeping and wiping down the tables now and then and the hours are light, but it provides you with money to make sure you have food since the welfare just barely pays your rent.
when you give all these documents to this enforcer while they're interrogating you and they inform you that on top of needing to do a drug test, your unreported supplemental income means you've essentially unknowingly committed welfare fraud. and the choices you have are paying a $5000 fine or going to jail for 6 months.
you don't have the money to pay a fine: you could barely afford to live, thats why you were on welfare in the first place! and if you go to jail, then you'll be separated from your child with no way to track them down if you got out because there was no next of kin to rely on. all you had were your friends. who you told about being on welfare, just to coincidentally have an enforcer tearing your life to shreds a few weeks later.
it's a lose lose situation. if you didn't go on welfare then you wouldve been on the streets with very little to support you and your kid. but now that you have, youll be separated indefinitely, maybe forever, for the crime of reaching out for help and still trying to help yourself in the process.
...very troubling implications, right?
i feel a welfare system in zaun would be another way for piltover to wield ultimate control over the citizens of the undercity with the added elements of the constant invasion of privacy, surveillance, and immediate profiling of shimmer abusers as criminals attempting to scam the good people of piltover out of their money.
of course, if there's welfare in zaun, there's a similar system in piltover, but half these things wouldn't affect them as heavily, because as far as we know, shimmer doesn't run rampant the same way up there. this cuts down on the immediate suspicion + reporting of visible shimmer users as potential criminals scamming the system.
in short, i think that a welfare system in zaun would have a lot of problems but be seen on paper as a net positive for the undercity despite all the issues deeply entrenched in the system. because piltover's just giving away free money, how could that be bad?
i think it would fit in veryyy nicely with the themes from season 1 of piltover constantly subjugating zaunites. which i feel were unfortunately dropped in season 2, but what can you do.
if you reached the bottom of this post i commend you, lol. this is mostly just rambling about the welfare system in general since i researched it heavily pretty recently. would love to hear your thoughts!

hmm yes i do love the fate/grand order character that is an amalgam of human and monstrous attributes that has always strived to maintain the ideal and belief that humans have a place in a world that is fundamentally incompatible with them and through sheer willpower managed to maintain their sense of self despite how warped they have become and when faced with the cold reality of how all their efforts and dreams amounted to nothing devolved into the monster that they were always at risk of becoming and yet even in such a tragic state and having lost control of themselves still fight for the value of a humanity that despite being lost to them is still truly beautiful and worth fighting for

.👀
(if you Want To Explain)
okay so.
Adina: See the scar on the back of my head? Got that from a templar.
Cassandra: A templar who was attempting to subdue an apostate, I'm sure.
Adina: Yeah, that's it.
Cole (if in party): Down on the ground, beaten, bleeding. Iron in my mouth. The shield comes down from above — this is it — I call lightning to take him with me.
Adina: He, uh. He didn't make it. The templar.
Vivienne (if in party): Cassandra, dear, do I understand correctly that she is confessing to murder?
Cassandra: Why... are you telling me this?
Adina: Don't know. I just say whatever's on my mind. Seeing you fight reminded me, and — you know what, just forget about this.
Cole (if in party): She won't.
...the thing is, in my mind they already had this pretty crunchy dynamic where they start off extremely wary of each other. People like Cassandra have tried and failed to kill Adina. People like Adina have tried and failed to kill Cassandra. By all accounts, they should be at each other's throats, but they've found themselves bound, by duty or loyalty, to the same cause and the same person (this is happening in the Aqunverse), and they have to figure out a way to live with that.
and eventually they become kind of desensitized to each other. Cassandra slowly comes to see Adina as more than A Threat. Adina figures that if Cassandra wanted to do something to her, she'd have tried already. And they do have things in common, like a preference to fight in the fray and a tendency to act before they think and, weirdly, being spirit-touched, though in different ways, and. against all odds. they get along. they become friends
....which I already like a Lot as a friendship dynamic, but also it WOULD be kind of funny to give Cassandra a bi awakening about it. what if you met a womam who was the antithesis to everything that YOU are and she was??? happy??? and kind of cool??? and then there's the thing about Cassandra being all about Duty and Order and Following Orders (but also she can't help but rebel when she feels like the orders are wrong) and Adina being as close as a mortal can get to Freedom Incarnate and, really, the metaphor kind of writes itself. also I could do something fun with Adina's arc of finding herself bound by duty for the first time in her ENTIRE LIFE because she wouldn't leave her best friend behind and so it meant she had to join the Inquisition and the Inquisition has Rules and Limitations the Valo-Kas didn't really have. and I think her and Cassandra could have some fun banter about this also. all in all, I think they both learn things from each other, so maaaaaybe they also kiss about it. as an AU if nothing else. I don't know if it would develop past a situationship, but I think that, if played right, it could be cute
ALSO dragon-coded character x dragon hunter-coded character
