ok listen. I know it's a rarepair & not even my normal fare so my regular readers prob won't read it, and then it's kinky on top of that, so it's not like. i know it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. but it's almost criminal that teach me to breathe (break me in half) has the second most hits for any of my fics this year and only 2 comments.
I've got a whole rant about, not specifically this fic, but smutfics in general and how *little* engagement they get when the amount of work that goes into them is so high (for me) and like. how it's barely not even worth it? Shoutout to @lurlur straight up tho for cheerleading this fic entirely bc it was written 100% for her and i'm almost to the point where I don't care what anyone else thinks about it lol.
#ask meme#thank you!#this was very kind sorry it got kind of ranty#lots of things have happened to me in august i've... been busy and not had the best time#i'm so ready for cold weather and hockey

With Great Power Comes Great Pining by Princessfbi / @princessfbi Teen | 10.4k It was the lightning strike. That had to be it. It was the only logical conclusion. Though, when it comes to being able to suddenly read peopleâs minds, Buck supposed there wasnât a whole lot of logic involved.
endless numbered days by Daisies_and_Briars / @cal-daisies-and-briars Gen | 13.1k When a big event in the lives of the members of the 118 falls on the same weekend as Bobby's late son's birthday, Bobby finds himself reflecting on grief, fatherhood, and life after loss.Â

Every time he touches Eddie, everything the other man is feeling moves through him like a wave of emotion, there and gone again. Buck canât decide if thatâs a blessing or a curse.
20k - 30k
light through the wave tips by bvckandeddie (zukkababey) / @bvckandeddie Explicit | 21.9k When Buck and Eddie planned a vacation with their kids over a year ago, they hadnât exactly planned on bringing a seven-month-old baby along with them. Surely wrangling three kids can't be too much of a challengeâthat is, if it weren't for Christopher's steadily worsening mood.
Cutting The Ties That Bind by kristen999 / @thekristen999 Mature | 34.4k Evan Buckley was a businessman, he had meetings and deadlines like everyone else. Sometimes he used intimation. While using the very same tactics he was trying to end while converting his family business into legitimate operations was a little hypocritical, it was the results that mattered.
Occasionally, he got threatened, but it was usually all hot air and ego. That all changed the day his breaks were tampered with. Enter Eddie Diaz, security specialist, who was not easily impressed by Buckâs expensive suits or financial conquests. That was okay. Buck enjoyed a challenge.

Back to Reality - A Final Fantasy
Pairing: Werewolf!Walter x Reader
Summary: Go get your wolf, girl!
Word Count: 5.2K
Warnings: 18+, NO MINORS, oral sex (m and f receiving), p in v (missionary), fingering, monster fucking (right?).
A/N: A little angst never hurt anyone, right? It'll all be okay. I swear. I wanted to get this out the day after Geralt, but life. At any rate, I think this is it for now. A real nice end to spoopy season with Walter.
Fantasy Hotel Masterlist
âHi.âÂ
He wasnât right there when you turned from the counter after picking up your coffee, but he was standing close enough that there was no mistaking who he was greeting. Had he been any closer, you probably would have sloshed your latte all over his chunky, dark blue sweater and you were glad you stopped short when you saw him. You didnât think heâd want to smell like pumpkin spice the rest of the day.
âHi yourself,â you smiled, a little shyly.Â
When you asked at the front desk if they really meant anything, and then again if they could get a message to Walter, you had no idea heâd show up at your regular coffee shop the very same day. As in the day after the night you'd just been with another man. It wasnât as awkward as youâd thought it might be, but it wasnât exactly relaxed either.
You'd been dreaming of this moment, but now embarrassment began to creep in and you wondered if you'd made a mistake. Several of them. Four to be exact.
"Would you like to sit and talk with me?"
The urge to sink right to the floor in front of him was hard to resist but you were still at a coffee shop and people were lined up to grab their to-go orders so you found an empty table in a secluded corner and sat yourself down across from him.
His eyes were melancholy and you imagined they matched the lonely howl from your night with August. There was no mistaking it and you wanted to wipe the sorrow from his face but how could you? You were likely the cause and he was probably just here to tell you to forget it as a courtesy since you'd stupidly put your business on blast at the front desk. Fuck.
"You alright over there? You look a million miles away. You sure you're okay to talk with me?"
You took a deep breath and let it rush out.
"It's really nice of you to do this in person. A lot of guys would just not call."
"Not call? What are you...? What do you think is happening here?"
"I mean, you came to tell me to back off, right? Like, you're flattered and all, but you wouldn't, couldn't be with me after everyone I've been with. I mean, you worked with those guys."
"So you know I don't work there anymore. That was the first thing I wanted to say, so good. That's out of the way."
Why would he want you to know that? Maybe so you knew you could keep going back to the hotel and not have to worry about running into him? He continued.
"But why on earth do you think I'm here to tell you to back off?" he raised a quizzical eyebrow at you.
It was as if all the air was suddenly knocked out of you and it was all you could do to gather your wits to answer him.
"Well, I just thought...I mean, you can't possibly want someone who..."
"What? Someone who isn't afraid to go after what she wants?" Now both eyebrows raised.
"Walter. You can't mean that. You...I'm sorry but you don't look like someone who's super excited about the prospect."
He paused.
"I know I look tired. I am tired. I've been up nights trying to figure this out. But, look, my exhaustion is also not all about this. I left the hotel for a few reasons. One was you, but maybe not why you think."
"Well, why did you?"
"It's not âcause I fell hard, though I did. And you might think that made it difficult to keep hosting, and you'd be right. But honestly I got torn. Torn between knowing you were having the time of your life, which you absolutely deserve to do, and dealing with the taunting."
"Taunting?"
"Some of the guys figured out how I felt, and one of them started giving me shit about it. Betting me he could steal you from me if you ever made it to his room, not that you were even mine to begin with. And, yeah, feeling the way I do made it harder and harder to host properly so I made a decision."
"You left."
"I left."
You thought back to your night with August and now you knew for certain he was referring to Walter. And after what Geralt had said, you wondered why August gave you an option to shut him out. It sounded like August wanted Walt to see, to know you were being satisfied by another man. You could understand how that must have felt. You had jealous thoughts, too, when you found all Waltâs time slots had been booked. Imagining him with other women, well, it wasnât all bad, but it wasnât the greatest feeling in the world either. And yet, Walter indicated there were other reasons he left.
"But that's not all?"
"I was also studying part time and between all the bookings, I was falling farther and farther behind. I had to stay up late to finish assignments and I had an important test coming, so I quit to focus on that because I never wanted to host forever, but once you came along, I never wanted to do it again."
You were speechless. Awestruck. If anyone had told you that Walter felt the same way about you from the get go, as you found yourself feeling about him after weeks of experiences, you would have said they were crazy. And yet, here he was, spilling his guts. He gave it all up without even knowing if he had a shot with you.
"And you don't care I went back? To other rooms?"
Walter looked around the coffee shop, then turned and spoke cautiously to you.
âCan weâŚ? Look, I know we donât really know each other, and if you want to do this in a public place, I get it. But could we at least take a walk? I feel like everyoneâs looking at us and I canât think straight.â
This man was flustered and you were, too. Confused by all the feelings and emotions and confessions. Plus, what did you really know about Walter anyway?
âIâm going to text some friends and let them know where I am and who Iâm with. Is that okay?â
âYeah. Of course. Weâll just head across the way to the park, okay?â
âIâll be right out.â
sendmeanangel: youâll never guess who showed up to get coffee this morning  sendmeanangel: weâre having coffee and talking in the park across from a place called The Runcible Spoon.  sendmeanangel: Iâll text again in an hour so donât expect any replies until then
Then you shut off your phone and headed out to meet Walter.
MNstrluvr: Ohmygodddd! darkgothnightengale: itâs all happening!!! Where are you now? darkgothnightengale: hello??? I know itâs only been 20 minutes but how can you not have just admitted your feelings and jumped his bones by now? Give us all the details!
You found him on a park bench and sat, one leg drawn up with a foot tucked under your other knee so you could turn to face him while you talked. You wanted him to reach out and touch you as well, run his hand over your arm while you talked, but maybe you werenât there yet. Maybe that would be awkward.
He took a deep breath and began.
"As to your question from before: I can't lie and say I don't care or wish I'd told you that very night how I thought I was feeling, but I thought it was way too soon to trust those feelings. And since you didn't know, and we weren't together, how could I expect you to just not do what you wanted? That's something else that's kept me up at night. Thinking about how to reconcile my feelings about you with both our pasts.â
Walt went on to tell you how much your night together had affected him. How he couldnât get you out of his mind. He apologized for the locker room talk. He knew Sy had mentioned it and he felt miserable about it. It was just something they did, share notes in case a guest came back around so they could make sure to work any of their favorite things into the stay. They werenât usually so personal with the comments, but heâd gotten carried away.
August had been particularly prickish about it, especially when it became clear how uncomfortable talking about the guests was making Walter, even going so far as to taunt Walter with the exact date and time of your reservation in his room. Heâd given notice the next day.
âIâm sorry.â
âWhy are you sorry?â
âYou quit your job over me. Well, sorta. What are you going to do now?â
âI was already working towards my private investigator license. Ironic, huh? A PI and I couldnât find the one person I really wanted. I asked the hotel, but they were not interested in breaking protocol or the privacy agreement. And until I got the call this morning, I thought I wasnât on the best of terms with them anyway. I think I left them kinda high and dry. But the desk agent is a friend.â
âYeah, Geralt mentioned somethingâŚâ you trailed off, embarrassed to be bringing up your latest conquest.
âWhoâs Geralt?â Of course he didnât know.
âHeâs a new host at the hotel,â you answered sheepishly.
âOh. Right.â Walter looked away for a moment. âOf course.â
âWalter, Iâm sorry. I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings.â
âBy going back there?â he turned to you again. âHow could you know I had feelings to hurt?â
âWell, I knew I had feelings that hurt.â
He stared at you in disbelief as you continued.
âI thought about you almost every day after our night together. I kept going back to different rooms, because Iâd had such a good time and I wanted to see what else was out there. And look, I did have good times. I hope thatâs not a problem.â
âI hosted other guests after you. I canât really say anything about it, can I?â
âRight. Okay, well. The more time that went by, the more hosts I met and experiences I had, the more I knew I only wanted you. And then I couldnât find you.â
âFind me?â
âI tried to re-book your room for weeks. You were always full.â
âYou tried⌠What?â
âI know itâs probably super odd for me to keep going back there the way I have been, and then admit that I also wanted to come back to your room. But itâs true. Thatâs whatâs been happening.â
âI guess the only thing I can say to that is Iâm flattered. And then to let you know that if you still feel that way, Iâd love to take you out tonight. Iâd love to stop talking about all this time weâve lost and maybe see if we can move forward. Because it took me a while but I realize it doesn't matter either way. Whether you went back or not. You are your own person. You're allowed to experience life the way you want to. I'm just here hoping you want to experience it with me again."
sendmeanangel: okay, iâm back and still alive, but i need a shower. Gimme another hour. Iâll fill you in I swear! MNstrluvr: meana, where are you????? Did you already fuck him???
sendmeanangel: oh my god you guys are insane. Itâs only been 45 minutes MNstrluvr: you canât just drop that and run. You had to have to known weâd need more sooner sendmeanangel: i think iâm allowed to gather all the intel before i share it with you lol darkgothnightengale: you got your intel and then bailed for a shower! Boo! MNstrluvr: so whatâs happening? Why are you stalling like this??? sendmeanangel: heâs taking me out on a real, honest-to-goodness date tonight MNstrluvr: YES!!! Where are you going? sendmeanangel: dinner and then a moonlight walk darkgothnightengale: isnât it a full moon tonight? sendmeanangel: yep ;) MNstrluvr: you are so getting fucked outdoors!! sendmeanangel: Wait someone's at the door. I think itâs my lunch. Hold on. MNstrluvr: send them away and come back to finish this talk!!!
"Walt? What're you...?" you spoke with surprise, thinking he wouldn't be here to pick you up for dinner for another five hours at least. It had only been one since you gave him your address and left him at the park, floating home on cloud nine. Now he stood in front of you, a bag of food in his hand.
"I couldn't wait any longer. I had to just...can I...?" Walter dropped the bag and made a motion, hands out in something like a plea, knee beginning to bend with something like reverence. Nothing you understood until you nodded your head.
He stepped forward then, into your space, your tiny studio apartment that until now was always just fine for your needs but suddenly seemed three sizes too small for the man who was bending to kiss you and wrap his arms around your thighs, urging you to encircle his waist with your legs as he moved to kick the door closed behind him.
Your fingers tangled in his gorgeous locks as you relished the feel of his lips on yours once more. You'd only experienced that two times with Walter at the hotel, and the urgency of only one of those came even close to the feel of this one, and you suddenly wondered if he'd held something back when he kissed you goodbye back then. The euphoria blinded you to any other movement until you felt your body peeled from his and deposited on your sofa. And not that you minded couch sex, as previously confirmed with Mike, nor were you assured in the moment that couch sex was the end goal, but you wondered briefly when you'd have a moment to help him unfold the futon, since your studio only had enough room for a convertible bed.
For now, Walter simply slipped down to the floor and settled between your thighs, braced his arms tightly against your hips, caressed the bare skin between your shirt and pants with his rough hands, and nuzzled his face into your stomach. You held him close, hands still shifting through his curls and you could swear you heard a whimper, but whether from you or him it didn't seem to matter.
For a few beats, it was just this sweet. A man on his knees before you, somehow awed by your presence and content to be pressed against you, to feel you hold him close. And then it was more. Then it was his mouth, covering a clothed breast with warmth, teeth nipping at the flesh through your shirt, his tongue leaving saliva on the fabric so that it clung to your erect nipple protruding proudly regardless of your bra and top in the way.
When he noticed you staring down, as if surprised by your bodyâs own response, he simply smirked and moved his attention to the other side. When he tired of the barrier, he slipped his hands up your back under your shirt to unhook your bra, then lifted both articles of clothing up your body and pulled them off your arms, before returning his attention back to your chest and his hands to your hips.
Heat was building, and along with it, an urge to roll up into him. When he felt the movements of your hips, he drew a hand over one thigh to cup it against your clothed sex as he peeled his head back to gaze up at you.
"Just as eager as I am," he grinned. "I like that."
"Please, Walter," you begged, though for what exactly you weren't sure.
"I got you," he emphasized with a firm press of the heel of his palm, dragging it up and over your increasingly sensitive nub to hook his fingers into the waistband of your leggings. At your approval, he removed them and settled back between your legs, though he nuzzled a little lower than before.
He dragged you down, pulling your ass off the edge of the futon so he had a clear path to his objective. You expected him to dive right in, hoping he remembered what he already learned from before, and then he spoke and your mind exploded.
"Such a delightful sight," he said, tracing down the crease of one thigh and up the other with a finger you desperately wanted him to dip inside you. And he could tell. "She's so eager, positively dripping, isn't she?" He squeezed an inside thigh, then nipped and licked the other before speaking again.
"Yes, Walter. Please," you gasped, already anticipating the sensations he was going to create for you. You shuddered and bucked involuntarily at his low chuckle, putting your pussy directly against his lips and he didn't try to resist any longer.
His hunger was apparent, and it matched the desire building in you. He lapped eagerly, licked and sucked with need, tongued expertly at all the spots he already knew were favorites and then he found a few more, too. You tried to hold onto a fleeting thought about his technique before it drifted into the air above you as you found your fingers back in his hair, clutching and pulling him close to your core. Walter feasted like there was no tomorrow and you closed your eyes with the knowledge you were going to have as many tomorrows with this man as you wanted.
When you came it was with the cry of his name on your lips. He crawled up off the floor to settle on the futon beside you, scooping you onto his lap and hugging you close to help steady you.
He placed kisses on your forehead and spoke words into the consciousness you struggled to maintain as your chest heaved. "Shh, I got you. You're good. So good. So beautiful."
"Walter, that was..., jesus..., fuck...," you stammered, barely able to control your thoughts and you wished you could have sunk into the ground below you when you heard the next words out of your mouth. "Did Sy give you pointers?"
Walter's immediate laugh was hearty and heartwarming, dispelling the thoughts you had that you deserved to be tossed across the room for even daring to bring it up.
"I've always known clients prefer him for that over any of the rest of us. I took him out for beers one night and I may have begged for a trick or five. Sy's a good guy and he thought you deserved it, though I'm sure he never would have agreed if he thought I was coming back to the hotel." Walt bent to capture your lips and when he was done kissing you hard and deep, he spoke again. "I do, too. Think you deserve it."
"What about you?" you asked, aware now of a hardness pressing against your flesh through his pants. "Don't you deserve more, too?"
You wiggled off his lap and stood, hand out to urge him up. You swallowed hard as he towered over you, eyes full of desire and lust.
"I deserve whatever you're willing to give me."
"I'll give you everything, Walt," you admitted, fingers already working the buckle of his belt and buttons of his pants.
His lips crashed to yours as soon as he tossed his sweater to the floor and he held you entranced with his tongue even after you dropped his jeans down his legs along with his boxers. It was just a low growl but the sound from the back of his throat was enough to send a wave of slick down your thigh as you clenched around the space where you most desired him to be.
"Fuck, Walter," you gasped into his mouth and begged. "Fuck me, please."
It was a mad dash to remove his boots so he could discard his pants, though not before he grabbed the made-just-for-him condoms from the pocket, and then unfold the futon for a larger surface area on which he could move you around and manipulate your passion. It was no plush cabin bed, but it would have to do.
"Fuck, I wanted this outside tonight," he admitted, staring at you as he rutted into your core with abandon.Â
"It's a full moon tonight," you noted, as if he wouldnât already know that.
"I still wanna fuck you under it," he growled, staring deep into your eyes.
You were losing control, falling up through space and time as you felt every inch of him against every inch of you and it still wasn't enough. You couldn't stop your eyes from closing as you begged him for more.
"Hey," he called, lifting your leg around his waist and when you opened your eyes you saw him smile as you wrapped your other leg the same way without prodding from him. You were mesmerized by the motion of his hips and barely caught the glint, a hint of change to amber, but you did.
âNo!â He stilled immediately but you held on as he tried to withdraw from you. âNo, stay with me, here just like this. We can do that again, later, whenever. Just,â you drew a hand to cup his face, âplease. Like this. Like you. Just you.â You kissed him deep and rolled your hips to spur him on again.
You were prepared to feel less full, less fucked, though not by much, with Walter in human form. You were not prepared for the way he fucked you to feel just as animalistic as the monster. His assault was merciless, even as he grunted in your ear all the ways he was going to make you his. How he planned to take you softly in the moonlight so youâd know it didnât matter what form he was in, you could have him any way you wanted.Â
When you finally came apart for him, he let loose with a loud growl and you were sure your neighbors were gonna call the landlord any minute. He hurried back to your side after disposing of the spent condom, curling around you and melting you in his warmth.
âDo you have anywhere you need to be?â he asked. âI still wanna take you to dinner, but Iâd love to just stay here with you for awhile. If thatâs okay?â
You were about to answer him, but your returning senses also meant you could hear the buzzing vibrations of notifications on your phone. Shit!
âUh, no. I donât have to be anywhere. Maybe you could grab that bag you left outside and we can see what else I can scrounge up for us to eat right now?â
You grabbed your phone as he peeled open the door, careful to tuck himself behind it as he grabbed for the food, lest a neighbor get a view they didnât pay for.
sendmeanangel: okay look. Heâs here. Right now. Canât talk. All good. MMNstrluvr: MEANA!!! darkgothnightengale: GIRL YOU BETTER SPILL SOON!
You found some chips and salsa and split your sandwich with Walt, not that it looked like nearly enough food to tide him over till dinner. But he didnât seem to mind. The next few hours flew by as you both sought to learn as much about each other as you could as soon as possible.
He explained that the special skill he had only worked within the confines of a vortex, over which the hotel had been built. Itâs why he couldnât bend time to allow him to study and work and wonder about you without losing sleep somewhere along the way.
After a shower, and some shower head, and then another shower, Walter asked if he could take you somewhere special for dinner. Somewhere not in town. He let you send GPS coordinates to your online friends with the promise they wouldnât send you any details of the location. He wanted it to be a surprise for you. They were only to use it if you didnât check in after dinner and again in the morning and once more when you were back at your apartment.
The sun was just sinking low with a burst of evening color when Walt pulled up to the lakeside cabin. He helped you out of his truck, then grabbed your overnight bags and the groceries from the backseat. You couldnât wait to see the place in the full daylight, but you could already tell it was magical.Â
An a-frame cabin with large windows faced the lake. An oversized wooden deck made up a large seating area and all around landing pad in front of the entrance. A set of side steps allowed access from the driveway, but along the full length of the deck three stairs led to a narrower mulched path that in turn led to a wooden dock out onto the lake. A seating area was visible there as well, though there were no chairs.
Walt let you in first, then followed and set the bags down before closing the door.
He must have noticed you still admiring the sunset out the windows.
"I can make it last."
You blinked and turned, curious about what he'd just offered.
"Are we in a vortex then?"
"Yes, I got lucky finding this spot. Don't own the place, yet, so I can't come out whenever I want, but I made sure tonight was free."
"And, I mean, no. It's beautiful but I'm really looking forward to the moon. Can you make that last?"
He bit his lip and nodded, letting a smile and glance drift to the floor, shaking his head as if he still couldn't believe his luck.
"Yeah, I definitely can," he grinned at you before sweeping you into his arms. He kissed you hard and deep and you could feel the way he held back.
"Don't," you said, pulling away from the kiss so you could look him in the eye.
"Don't make it last?" he asked, confusion furrowing his brow.
"Don't hold back."
He did not. Every ounce of your clothing was on the floor next to his in what felt like a heartbeat. He was pawing at every inch of your body and you were enjoying it, the way he caressed you, held you, molded you to his form.
"Outside?"
"Won't matter," he huffed between kisses. "She's not up yet. Later. After dinner."
"Will you do it anyway?" you asked, and nodded earnestly when he asked if you were sure.
He again didn't waste a moment. One second he was Walter, the next he was the wolf and he was at your throat. Then down your body, then between your legs.
He made you come on his tongue at least three times before he presented his enormously hard member to you and helped you work your mouth around the tip.
You wanted so much more. You gave it your best shot. But he was huge. Larger than you recalled. When it was clear you'd need your hand to cover him completely, he licked your palms and wrapped your fingers around his length.
He pulled you off just as you finally found the right rhythm, the right pressure, the right speed.
"You're gonna make me come," he growled.
"Kinda the point, Walt," you grinned up at him. "C'mon, lemme..."
"You asked me not to hold back. Sorta assumed you meant the fucking."
"I meant don't..." you licked your lips. "Hold..." then your hand. "Back..." And with that, you took him back into your mouth and kept working him to climax.
You swallowed him down and glanced up, marveling at the way he shifted. The hair receded, though clearly not completely. The nose shortened, teeth shrunk, though a fang still peeked from his mouth as he panted for air. His stature gave back the extra inches balancing on the balls of his feet gained him. And with claws retracted back into his normally large hands, he reached to bring you to his feet before him.
After the kiss, you admitted, "I just figured the faster we finish dinner, the faster we can get to her."
His laugh never failed to make you feel safe and at home.
"That isn't how the moon rise works, but I appreciate the initiative."
She was just at the horizon of the mountain crest behind the cabin when Walt cleared the plates from the table. You started a quick, warm shower just to freshen up and welcomed him into your arms when he joined you.
Then he dried you off, handed you a flannel of his to wear, escorted you outside where he shifted on the way down the steps and led you to the end of the dock. You sat between his legs, back against his chest, and let the heat radiating from him keep you warm. You smelled the chill in the air you knew would lead to frost soon, but not tonight, not tomorrow.
She peered over the tree tops and cast her gaze upon you. You felt her power and you felt his power and you arched against him as he moved his hand between your legs. He nuzzled down your neck, nipped at your shoulder, and carefully, with precision, made you come on his hand.
As you recovered, you unbuttoned the shirt, slipped it off your body, and laid it down behind you. You made your way to your back, letting the flannel shield your bare skin from the hard wood planks. And you pulled him to you, urged him inside you, and held him close. Your bodies moved in tandem as she shone brightly across the gentle rippling of the water, her reflection casting you in her glow.
Walt didn't lie about taking you gently. It was like nothing you ever imagined being with a wolf would be like. As sensual as any touch any man or monster had ever given you, and given your recent adventures, that was saying a lot.
But you could tell he was still holding back.
"I get it Walt," you whispered in his ear. "This doesn't have to be the way you say it though." You smoothed the fur along his face as he pulled back to watch your face. "Don't hold back."
With a snarl, he did as you bid, taking you apart as he had back at your place just mere hours ago. Though once the moon reached her peak, you could tell he'd halted time and it was gonna have to be you to beg him for mercy, plead with him to stop treating you to the most intense, overpowering yet intimate orgasms you'd ever felt. You had to urge him to finally come and let the moon fall how she wanted.
"I love you, too," you whispered to him as he collapsed beside you.

A/N: apologies for the wait, uni has been kicking my ass (i'm in my final year of bachelor's rn! wahoo!) which made my brain go to a stalemate for a while. bUTTT i've recently finished tale of the nine-tailed which caused my brain to spur into action again (everyone say thanku to lee dongwook)! without further ado, pls enjoy!
You were presently seated in the Third-Round Knockout, a Liyuen restaurant which was famed for its gorgeous dishes which had a mouth-watering taste. Zhongli was seated diagonally across you to your left and Ajax in front of you. It was an odd combination, really, having a meal together with your business associate and your soulmate in a fancy, high-end restaurant.
From the corner of your eye, you notice Zhongli's direct gaze on you. It was zeroed in on you, making it seem like he was scrutinising every square inch of your face, and yet it made you feel warm all over, making you feel... embarrassed, somehow? You could only take small sips out of your cup of tea, careful as to not burn your tongue.
(Your tongue, or your cheeks, either one was applicable in this situation.)
"Are you familiar with Mr. Zhongli's practice, Mrs. Ragnvindr?"
Ajax's voice pulled you out of your thoughts.
"I'm afraid not." Oh no, was your mind preoccupied with other thoughts while Ajax was talking? "Could you elaborate on it?"
"I should let Mr. Zhongli do the talking instead," Ajax said, "It's better for him to explain his job scope."
"I am a consultant at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlour," Zhongli spoke, "And I simply give people suggestions on how to proceed with their funeral preparations and which packages would best suit their needs. We have a variety of packages for everyone's needs, thanks to Director Hu's business-savvy mindset."
"I wouldn't have expected you to be a funeral parlour consultant," you said, smiling candidly at him, "If anything, I thought you would be an art museum director of sorts."
"He does look the part, doesn't he?" Ajax said with a laugh, "I once mistook him as a CEO of some sort the first time I met him."
"Oh, I understand what you mean," you laughed, "It's in the way he carries himself."
"And the fancy choice of words, too," Ajax chimed in, "That's not all: he's so unusually knowledgeable about every topic!"
"You flatter me," Zhongli shook his head with a smile, "I simply have a good memory."
"Excellent memory, you mean," Ajax corrected him almost immediately, "Anyone would kill for that kind of brainpower. Remember the time you gave advice to that one Fontanian guy who pivoted into film-making? He immediately made a whole lot of money with his debut film!"
You raised your eyebrows. If Zhongli was even adept at advising a novice filmmaker, perhaps he had some good suggestions for your new business plan you had in mind.
"Mr. Zhongli," the dark-haired man immediately turned his head towards your direction as soon as you called his name, "If you would be so kind, I would like to hear your opinion on my business plan."
He straightened his back slightly and interlaced his fingers together, interest piqued as his entire body was turned to face you as he spoke, "Sure, I am all ears."
"This is the business plan I had in mind, which is in collaboration with the Fatui Network..." You launched into your spiel, mapping out the business plan you had in mind (which all of the details had already been discussed with Ajax beforehand), and Zhongli listened attentively. After you were done speaking, there was a brief moment of silence.
"This is indeed a well thought-out plan, but could I make a few minor suggestions?" Zhongli asked.
You nodded, "Please feel free to do so, the floor is yours."
Zhongli began to speak his mind, pointing out what particular flaws and loopholes your business plan might have concerning your consumer base in a respectful and straightforward manner, and what particular negative repercussions might be incurred. You thought Ajax was bluffing when he said Zhongli was insightful; Zhongli was pretty much a wise sage speaking with all the knowledge Teyvat could possibly even offer. If he were a movie character, he would be the wise old pilgrim living at the top of some snowy, out-of-reach mountain that the main character had to climb for months just to reach him.
"...That is all I have to offer, and you might want to take my thoughts with a grain of salt," Zhongli concluded his verbalised thoughts, picking up his teacup again.
"No, what you've just said makes complete sense," you shook your head, "I'll adjust a couple of points on my end. Thank you for your insight, it was really helpful!"
As if right in cue, the food that Ajax had ordered arrived and was served on the table.
"Let's dig in, shall we?" Ajax grinned, and you mirrored his smile and dug your chopsticks into your bowl of noodles as a response.
Ajax left as soon as brunch concluded, scurrying off to pay for the meal first and apologising for leaving first due to urgent business matters.
So that left you and Zhongli alone, standing outside the restaurant.
"Are you heading back to the hotel, Mrs. Ragnvindr?" Zhongli asked, hands situated round his back.
The sun was shining in the sky, but it was not unbearably hot. On the contrary, it was warm and inviting, perfect for an afternoon walk.
You shook your head, "I was planning to go for a stroll. Would you like to join me?"
The man smiled as his eyes softened, "It would be my pleasure."
You and Zhongli walked along the roads of Liyue's capital, taking in the bustling chatter of people and the busy city life. Vehicles were whirring past the both of you, and the rays of the sun ricochetted off the glass panels of the buildings. Somehow, doing something as simple as going on a promenade was much more fulfilling than doing work back home.
"Oh, look! Roadside stalls!" your eyes brightened as you spotted a couple of stalls set up by the road, with old women managing them and selling a variety of trinkets. Without hesitation, you made a beeline towards the stalls, eyes scanning through the products on display. Zhongli joined you soon after, peering past your shoulder to peruse through the items on sale.
"It's nice to see you, Zhongli," a welcoming, gentle voice spoke, causing both you and Zhongli to look up. It was an old woman with her silver hair tied up into a low bun, and a pair of round-rimmed spectacles perched on her nose.
"The pleasure is mine, Street â ahem, Madam Ping," Zhongli returned the greeting.
"Ah, and who's this young lady you've brought along with you?" Madam Ping's eyes shifted over to you, and for a split second, you could see some sort of surprised expression in her eyes. However, it was fleeting and was quickly replaced by a warm gaze and a complementary, friendly smile.
"She is an... acquaintance of mine," Zhongli explained.
"It's nice to meet you," you smiled and gave a little bow (It's customary in Liyuen tradition for younger people to bow in greeting to the older folk, you remembered), then refocused your gaze on the items on display, "You have wonderful wares on display, ma'am."
"Take your pick, child," Madam Ping smiled, then bent over to whisper, "As Zhongli's friend, you're entitled to take one for free."
Your eyes widened into the size of saucers, "Oh, no, I can't do that! You're running a business here; I wouldn't want to make you lose any profit!"
"I insist," Madam Ping shook her head, then nodded towards Zhongli, "He doesn't have a whole lot of friends, so I'm happy to know he's made a new one. I guess you can say this is a little bribe from me to convince you to stay friends with him."
While you really thought you should not be imposing and picking out something for free, you knew you would offend this sweet old lady if you turned her offer down. With a smile and dejected shake of your head, you said, "Alright, then."
Madam Ping brightened almost immediately and you went about the stall, browsing through the wares, discreetly looking at the price tags and trying to pick the cheapest one so that you would not be the first step into driving this poor woman into bankruptcy (or whatever it would be).
Madam Ping shifted over to Zhongli and lowered her voice down to a whisper, "So, it seems you've found her again in this life."
Zhongli hummed.
"This is her last life, isn't it?"
Zhongli nodded, a bittersweet smile taking over his features.
Madam Ping studied his facial expression before speaking again, "You don't seem that happy to know that she's one step closer to reuniting with you."
Zhongli shook his head, "I am beyond delighted to know that she is not too far from reincarnating again and spending her next life forever with me, but..." Zhongli frowned before continuing, "I cannot help but wonder if that is exactly what she wants in her next life is all."
Madam Ping mirrored Zhongli's expression, but in a curious manner, "What makes you say that?"
"I was never her lover in any of her past incarnations," Zhongli explain in a slow manner, as if recalling an archaic tale from long ago, "I had always been a friend, a companion to her. In one of those lives, she told me that she never wanted to live her life like that, having me by her side."
He could remember it as clear as day. The day he saved you from drowning, his body completely drenched in seawater. The fabric of his clothes was clinging to his skin and his hair was tousled and damp. Your skin was pale and your lower lip was trembling, but most importantly, your eyes were filled with tears and you were hitting his body repeatedly.
"Why did you save me?" you wept as your fists struck his chest weakly, "You should've just left me to die!"
"I would never want to see you give up on yourself," he whispered as he swept a stray lock of hair out of your face.
You lowered your head and gripped his clothes, "Did it never occur to you that this was not the life that I wanted?" You raised your head to look at him directly in the eye, a sort of sad fury burning behind your eyes, "In this life, or in any other life, I've never wanted you by my side."
It was a painful yet memorable moment that haunted him every waking hour. Perhaps he had been wrong to even make that contract in the first place. All of this happened because of his selfish desire to see you again, to meet you again, to just stand by your side for another day. He had never once thought about what you wanted. And so, that day woke him up from his self-centered fantasy and caused him to question all his choices. Maybe he should have just let you leave and not hold you back. Perhaps that was what you wanted in the very beginning.
Madam Ping frowned, "I'm sure that's not what she meant. You know she's got a tender spot for you."
Zhongli lowered his head and stared at his gloved hands, "I hope that holds true, Streetward Rambler."
"Ma'am! I've found something!" your voice plucked the two old friends out of their little bubble of conversation, and both of them turned to look at you. You were waving at them, a smile in place as your other hand was holding something small in your palm. You looked so carefree and happy, and Zhongli could only hope you would stay this way forever.
"Don't worry too much, Rex Lapis," Madam Ping whispered as she gave the man a gentle pat on the arm, "I know she wouldn't blame you for your choices."
As the old woman walked off to talk to you and package your procured item into a small wooden box, Zhongli could only hope and pray that Madam Ping's words rang true.

Puzzlemaster Week 2 Recap
paltry progress on the puzzles, but a plethora of plot proceedings!
oh my god has it really been a week since the last update? not quite, sorry. i've got prescheduled Life Stuff tomorrow making me busy, so i want to do this today. do describe developments without delay if a LOT goes down tomorrow!
some corrections from last week-- apparently 5 August is something that happened in the Puzzlemaster's past (thanks for the correction @art-thou-a-man-or-a-muppet!), but i'll still be holding onto my hat if/when things pick up then. wouldn't be surprised if that's why this week has been quiet-- the calm before the storm.
@the-1t also wanted it to be known that they're still here, don't worry (i'm worrying).
new stuff this week: the Them had some more interactions with the community this week. They have been harrassing the Puzzlemaster. i said i'd do this so here goes: They are cowards. There, i've said it again.
new player on the board as well: everyone welcome @h1y1p1n101s. i think that's how to spell their name. they've sent a few of us some messages trying to make us fall asleep. they've got nothing to do with the Them, so who knows what's going on here. some advice for dealing with all of these eldritch entities in the tags and inboxes: don't take deals. if you have to (or are just really pressing your luck), make a deal but do it carefully. watch your wording. a little mnemonic i've been living by for a few years: make 'em, don't take 'em, and above all else never break 'em.
i also want to note that there's quite a few books being shuffled around somehow. i think there's one that's disappointingly not cursed, one which is, and one the Puzzlemaster is trying to get to @potato-lord-but-not from way back at the start of the game. or whatever this is.
again, there's still this evening and tomorrow for things to Happen, so stay safe, have fun, and good luck!
OH YEAH THANK YOU TO POTATO LORD FOR REMINDING ME: CONGRATS @the-r4t-man ON YOUR DATE WITH THE PUZZLEMASTER! đđđ đđđđđ hope it went well!

I've been wrong about everything else, so I probably am wrong about my theory but here we go:
So I believe Austin broke up with her in late August. Right after the Canada trip. I think he was trying to make it through the summer and my guess was he didn't want to ruin a trip that was already planned.
But him missing her birthday wasn't that weird. For me it was all her family and friends rallying around her that seemed kinda sus. Like they were trying to make her feel better. Not to say her family wouldn't be there for her birthday but something seemed off. Like she was upset. She could've easily spent her birthday in NY with Austin if that's what she wanted. He wasn't filming yet and it's not like she isn't rich. But that ties into my suspicions that he broke up with her. So it wasn't an option.
Something was off with her at TIFF. I don't know if it was nerves or she was on something. But her need to hang onto Corey was weird. Deumoxi was at the afterparty and said Kaia was being protected that night. Like she was upset and her friends were rallying around her. Again, something that often happens when a break up occurs.
Then out of the blue comes these two L&S articles. Speculating about them having problems and Austin essentially wanting to end things. He's outgrown the relationship. Very similar to the article his team had put out there in May about them not having anything in common.
They hadn't been seen together in over a month. Kaia was in NY a few times but wasn't with Austin at any point. She was with Marcello. She was all over him. Two different occasions, she was with Marcello. She was acting like a single woman.
Then more articles come out speculating their relationship status. I'm sorry where there is smoke there is fire.
Austin had been busy working. Minding his business. Then he was needed for a pap walk to keep the break up rumors at bay. I think he'd be fine with the news coming out. but at the same time he's filming, so he doesn't need the stress of the break up coming out. Kaia did a lot of damage to her image and how people viewed her relationship with Austin the last few weeks.
Also the fact that nothing has changed in their demeanor either. If they had shown up together after a month and break up rumors soaring, looking happy and in love maybe people would buy it. But Austin is so done. He's just doing what he has to do to break away.
Just from what I've seen in past celebrity break ups. Often they've split before speculation even begins. But will go along with whatever plan their PR teams put in place. Austin and Kaia wouldn't be the first couple to be broken up and still have to act like they are together to keep up appearances.
Just a theory. Again where there is smoke there is fire. Saturday was way too much of a coincidence.
You know what girl? This is a good theory. You're not the only one who's had this theory. It does kind of make sense.
Also, the weight loss thing is very important to note as well. I don't think it's from the stress with Presley either, because he looks fine now, and I've heard that he's even been going to rehab.
We first noticed that Kaia was losing weight around July. It's now October, and she still looks frail. It's the thinnest she's ever been since dating Austin.
Idk about others, but I lost a ton of weight when going through a major relationship heartache and heartbreak.
Not to mention, they still look miserable with each other.
These things by themselves might not say much, but when you put all of these little things together, they do seem to paint a certain picture.
The fact that their teams haven't really said anything is very interesting.
Also, like you said, most celebrities have already broken up long before the official announcement comes out.
Many times, people can even just look at a couple and tell when it's on its last legs. I agree with you, where there's smoke, there's fire.
I'm just going to eat my popcorn like the rest of you all, and will see what happens btwn now and the end of this year.
All I know is, I don't think I can take another Gerber Family Holiday Trip in Cabo at the end of this year again. đŠ

Hanzi update (+accidental trauma talk)
tw illness, trauma, vomiting, weight loss, recovery. I didn't plan to write about this but because of what happened in the last year I can't really write about how I studied Chinese without talking about it. so. but it's mainly about hanzi lol
I've been learning how to write traditional characters with the vague idea that I'd go and study in Taiwan, and also that if I want to write Classical Chinese or Japanese they're far more useful - but the program I want to go to Taiwan for requires HSK7, which I DO not think I can achieve and have the results of before March. Who knows! Perhaps within me lies untold brilliance and dedication!!
...well, I wouldn't rely on it. (I am also busy with a job, a partner, studying an A-level course to begin tutoring it in September, and writing the second draft of my novel.)
And even if I ended up going to Taiwan with my absolutely fantastic HSK7, there's no way I could handwrite all of those words within a year. If I learn 10 characters a day, that's like 3650 characters in a year, but realistically that will never happen - and you still have to actually remember them.
I also know from my last experience where I learnt a stupid amount of characters very quickly (about 800 in two weeks) that I can technically do it, I have a very large swollen brain, but then the brain, being very large and very swollen, promptly burns out. And leaves me to not do any Chinese again for like two months. So basically - completely pointless, because after those two months of rest I had forgotten most of them anyway. I will not be doing that again.
This time around I have been slowly, very slowly, learning things on Skritter. I have about 400 characters so far. I'm not doing words but doing characters, which is a bit slower, but I figure it'll be more useful in the long run. After I have the first 1000, I'm planning to then systematically go through the HSK and TOCFL lists and check I know how to put characters together and which 'jing' is used in 'yijing' etc.
This approach is only really going to work because I know a lot of vocabulary and can read a lot of stuff already - otherwise I wouldn't recommend to anybody without that backbone of vocabulary to just learn random isolated characters, unless you're masochistic or much harder-core than I am.
As I have said in a lot of posts before, I had a very difficult experience in China last August and have basically taken an entire year off studying because in all honesty I just couldn't bring myself to face the language again. Every time I tried I had this crazy grief and nightmares and stress response. What I went through was so stressful that during those two months in China that I lost seven kilograms, as I couldn't eat much without vomiting it back up due to stress and fear, didn't sleep, and ended up having to leave for Thailand pretty severely malnutritioned - which then made me susceptible to illnesses there and I spent the next two months after with awful health, vomiting and weak and generally sick. Luckily I was with friends and I gained the weight again and my period and digestive system sorted itself out.
And I never expected that a language itself could carry trauma? Like. Nobody died, it wasn't like that, I wasn't abused or assaulted or anything but still...for just under a year, every time I spoke or heard or read Chinese I couldn't help thinking of those two months. Even now it's still hard. I'm finding my way back to it but, to be honest, I didn't expect how hard it would be. I thought I could just - move past it, because I'd already had so many great experiences in China and Taiwan and with Chinese, that they would cancel each other out or at least be aided by the huge amounts of love that the language has shown me. Alas, it was not the case.
Anyway. All of that to say - I have only managed to do about 400 characters in a year, because I essentially gave up studying completely.
Now I've just finished reviewing and re-remembering those 400 characters on Skritter, so I'm ready to start again! I don't know what's changed, I guess just time - I feel more positive, I feel curious and interested about the language again. I don't know. I'm not going to question it too deeply. But for these past two weeks, I've been having a lot of fun :)
I'll update everyone on my progress as I go! Next post - 500.
#meichenxi manages#langblr#lingblr#who is still around learning chinese from the old gang?? say hiiiiiii#this is a complete mess lol but basically. I have finished 400 characters in review on skritter#I'm essentially a god#ć˘

Fix You - Chapter 14: Enjoy the Silence
Gif by @hunterschafer
Pairing: Frankie âCatfishâ Morales x Fem!Reader
Fic Masterlist
Read on A03
Spotify Playlist
ââââââââş
Chapter Summary: The final heat...
Word Count: 7k
Rating: R
Chapter Warnings: Cussing, violence. I will not be warning anything else due to spoiling the story. We are all grown. You can stop reading when you want to.
A/N: Has it really been a year? I wish I had a better excuse than "I haven't been doing great." But that's what it is. I've had huge changes in my life. New job, new career, new goals, and a greater sense of self-worth. I'm feeling a lot better. But my new schedule is busy! Hopefully you can forgive me for such a long cliffhanger.
Finally, a heads up. This has been the arc I have been working towards for almost two years, and I'm not going to waver. Just stick with me like you have been. Itâll be worth it.
I also did the absolute most and made a specific playlist just for this chapter here.
Forever thank you to everyone who commented, reblogged, shared, boosted, made content for, and supported me. It meant a lot and definitely kept this fic in the back of my mind. As always, most love to my girl @musings-of-a-rose who has tolerated me being a shitty friend for a whole ass year, and always talking things through with me in life and in this fic. Cheers.
Suggested Songs: Depeche Mode "Enjoy the Silence", Fitz and the Tantrums: "Out of My League", Lizzo "Truth Hurts", Michael Kiwanuka "Cold Little Heart", Cigarettes After Sex "Cry", Guster "Demons"
Frankie and you decided to break your apartment lease starting October 1st. Fall term started on the 30th of August, and you wanted time to settle into your schedule before planning a move. You spent almost all your time at his house anyway, only stopping back at your apartment for more clothes. Frankie had already given you a row of drawers to keep your things in.
Youâd honestly never been happier, both on cloud 9 and it never faded, you were incredibly excited to begin this new start with Frankie and Gabi. It all seemed to have happened so fast. It had only been five months, you hadnât even told your family about him yet, mostly to avoid comments on the age gap.Â
You were relieved the hiccup in your relationship settled, you didnât like feeling unsure or that someone resented you. When you started feeling secure again, you clung to it. That sparkle of joy was hard to keep in check.
You picked your Fall schedule out together and spent the remaining weeks of summer basking in your relationship, playing with Gabi, going out with the guys, and constant fucking. But your most favorite thing was still lying on the couch with Frankie, teasing each other and watching bad TV.
âThis is simultaneously the best and worst movie I have ever seen in my life. I donât understand how they achieved this.â
Frankie shrugs, reaching to your lap for the giant bowl of popcorn, his eyes still glazed to the TV where Mad Max: Fury Road is playing. âI dunno. Who cares? Itâs cars and chaos!â
âAnd Tom Hardy. And Charlize Theron.â
He pinches you on the waist, acting threatened by your thirst just to tease you. âYou ever been to a demo derby? This kind of reminds me of it.â
You sit up from where your back is resting against his chest. âUm, no? Isnât that kind ofâŚfor rednecks?â
He laughs, his eyes crinkling. âIâm not sure if you noticed, but Benny and Will are rednecks. But no, itâs for anyone who likes cars crashing into each other. Thereâs actually one at the fair every year. We always go to it. You should come.â
âIâm not going to a demo derby.â
âAw come on! Itâll be fun! First time for Gabi too, and thereâs rides and games and funnel cake and fried oreosââ He pauses as you hold your hand up to silence him.
âIâll go. You had me at âfunnel cake.ââ
The fair is packed. The final hurrah of the summer before kids return to school and university students dive back into their studies. The derby started at 8 PM sharp, you, Dali, and the boys got there plenty early to look around a bit, get some food, and find seats.
You forgo any typical entree and go right for the funnel cake, heaping fruit and extra powdered sugar on it until the plate is a big mound of sweet. The guys had talked you up on this for days, Benny wouldnât shut up about it, and you found yourself excited to watch. Your legs bounce impatiently as you scarf down your cake, breaking off pieces here and there to feed to Gabi and your boys.
The seats were bleachers, hard metal planks that hurt your butt and back and caught vibration from every footfall, but Pope sat behind you so you could lean back against his legs to be more comfortable.Â
Itâs a long wait. The bleachers eventually fill up, you certainly had the best seat in the house (thank you Will), and you could see the hoods up of participating cars behind the commentator podium. The air is musty, the odor of wet dirt from a quick August shower earlier that day.
When the first round of vehicles start revving their engines, Frankie pulls some earphones for Gabi and secures it to her head. Once heâs sure sheâs comfortable, he quickly runs you through the basic rules. âSo thereâs several âheatsâ, and which heat youâre in is based on how many cylinders the car has. Last car moving is the winner, but you canât just avoid the other cars the whole time. No continuing if your car starts sparking from the engine, no hitting the driver side door, and no hitting anyone whoâs already out.âÂ
âWait, cars catch on fire in this?â
Before Frankie can answer, the announcer calls out the first heat and you almost choke at the state of the cars coming out. They were completely dilapidated, windows punched out and hood frames reinforced with extra steel. It looked like each entry had about 5 different parts all from different cars, horrendous paint jobs, and one of them even had a stuffed dinosaur duct taped to the hood. Some of them looked like they had already been hit by cars, parts hanging off and bumpers pressing in on itself. None of these cars would last at all. Thereâs no way...
The rink was surrounded by giant cement cinder blocks creating a large ârinkâ type area. The contestants lined the front bumpers of their vehicles up parallel to each other at the barricades separating the cars from the bleachers, alternately revving their engines during the countdown.
âOkay, so, usually we all pick the car we think is going to win.â Benny says. You lean forward to look over the assortment of jacked up cars for this heat, eventually settling on an old Toyota Corolla painted a matte black. Benny chooses the dino car, Will chooses a Dodge Stealth with itâs headlights hanging outside the socket, Dali and Pope argue over a Ford Taurus whose back end was already smashed into the back seats, and Frankie chooses a Chevy Impala, which you immediately regret not taking because it has such a long front and back end. Lots of room for smashing and being able to keep going.
Gabi jumps up and down on Frankieâs lap as he points out things to her over the sounds of engines and a countdown, and then the cars are off off, engines roaring and dirt kicking up as they all reverse at full speed, several of them crunching up in the middle while others circle around the perimeters.
It soon becomes clear to you that there is no rhyme or reason to which car makes it and which doesnât. Popeâs Taurus didnât even start and is eliminated after 2 minutes of no movement, and whoever is driving the boxy piece of shit Honda Accord that Dali had to select is a fucking maniac, winding and weaving at full speed backwards, hitting whoever gets in their way. Her choice is the winner of that heat.Â
Most of them are driving backwards, and Will tells you itâs because they are trying to protect the engine. You deflate in your seat a little in disappointment, but he assures you that as the heat winds down and there's fewer cars taking up the space, the drivers and announcer will get impatient and they will hit each other head to head.
Youâre shocked at how much you enjoy it. At one point a car hits the passenger side door of another so hard that it is pushed up and onto the barricade wall from the inertia, hanging from an angle as the crowd jeers and shrieks in excitement. One car flips over completely, anotherâs engine bursts into flames and the crowd all starts crying out caution because the announcer canât see it. Youâve never seen anything like it before and there was so much fire you were sure the whole thing would blow up, but the driver slid out the glassless driverâs side window like it was no big deal and walked it off.
There is something satisfying about two cars hitting each other at full speed, the bodies of them crunching, wheels hanging off axles, bumpers being dragged behind and run over by other drivers, cars with mangled pieces becoming stuck to each other so they canât separate until another car hits them, tires completely gone and cars only moving on its hubs. Itâs chaos in a safe format, a way to experience destruction and violence in a way that feels good and unharmful.Â
Gabi has never been so amazed in her entire life, her mouth hangs open and she wriggles against her dad to see everything, laughing every time a collision happens. The audience oohs and ahhs and boos and screams and cheers and teases, you and your friends join the clamor as you have your own mini competition with yourselves. Â
Giant fork tractors come into the arena area to lift the cars that canât move anymore, some guys are able to get theirs back up and running, driving them to the sides to shape up for the final Battle Royale.
The final heat is fucking wild. All the cars that were already battered enough before they even began to come back out, returned to do another round for the final winner. With all the action youâd barely even noticed that contestants whose cars were still driveable had spent the remaining heats beyond the barricades hammering and reforming their vehicles enough to compete again.Â
And at the end, the winner of all faces the crowd, pulls off their helmet to reveal a thick curly mass of long hair. The winner is a woman. You and Dali cheer until your throats hurt.
Itâs over too soon. Thereâs a mass exodus the instant the derby is over, the packed stadium standing and pouring down the stairs pressing so tight that you and your boys decide to hang back until it thins out. You lead the way, Frankieâs large and warm hand grazing your waist as you slowly move down the stairs and back out into the fair, turning to wait for the rest of your friends to make it out.
âWhat next?â Benny says when you are all reunited. âMore food? Games? Rides?â
âIâm not eating more before getting on rides, let's do those now.â Says Frankie, grumbling as he hears you tease him with Benny. He whips his head around to glare at you. âJust you wait until you get older and start getting sick on rides, I cannot wait to make fun of you back.â
The wait for the ride tickets is long, but it leaves plenty of time for the group to decide how many are needed. Who is riding what, who isnât, what pairings and who will watch Gabi on the rides she canât do. Youâre surprised when Will and Pope back out of the Zipper, leaving you and Benny as a pairing for that.
Riding it was a mistake. The ride is basically a giant airborne conveyer belt with completely enclosed containers for people hanging off it that were 360 degree capable. And it lasted FOREVER. You lose some of your funnel cake behind the ride out of sight, threatening violence on Benny if he outs you to the others.Â
But it didnât stop you from riding The Freak Out immediately afterwards, a rotating pendulum swing that made you feel like you were going to be catapulted out of your seat. The ride seated 4 groups of 4 so that in between squeezing your eyes shut, you could catch watery glimpses of Benny red-faced and cackling hysterically, Willâs chants of âohfuckohfuckohfuckOHfuckOHFUCKOHSHIT FUCCCCCCK!â, and Frankie lookingâŚabsolutely fine. It was almost disturbing really, he was calm and collected, the only hint that this might have been something other than a nice drive in his truck was his giant smile, the tears leaking from his squinted eyes, his chocolate curls whipping around in the breeze as his hands clutch his hat in his lap with a steel grip.
âHow the fuck were you so calm?!â You gasp as you stumble off the rickety landing platform. You hadnât moved yet you felt like you had run a mile, your heart was beating so fast from the adrenaline it almost felt like you might have a heart attack.Â
Frankie shrugs. âFeels like a copter in a bad air current.âÂ
You simply stare blinking.Â
âNo, heâs always like this. Like this one time, we were flying in a helo over the Andes mountains, andââ
A sharp stare from Frankie that he tries to hide from you makes Benny backpedal.Â
âUhhh yea we were flying over some mountains and the air current was wild but we got over the mountains just fine and everything was fine and we were fine.â
Your heart seizes in your chest, that same feeling of not being told something creeping up. You hate it. You push it back down, swallowing heavily to center yourself. âSo I assume you were fine.â
âYea. Yea. Cat is a good pilot.âÂ
You hum, the panic still not leaving your chest.
Frankie grabs your hand as you walk. âIt happened a lot, I just got used to it.â
âIt happened a lot?â
âYea. I mean, sometimes we were flying through shit climates, sometimes even pursued. Doesnât make for a smooth ride. Iâm just used to it. They always scream bloody murder though.â Frankie smiles softly.
âOh.â
You go silent, continuing to walk to the next destination: the scrambler. You had already established you would not ride and Dali wanted some funnel cake herself, so she heads off while you stay off to the side with Gabi to watch, lost in your own thoughts.
âJust donât fucking talk about that, none of that. That never happened.â Frankie seethes to Benny as they are strapped into the ride.Â
âSorry dude, I canât read your thoughts. I figured she knew.â
âNo. I donât want her to know. No one else needs to know about it.â
Benny falls silent, looking to Will beside him. Pope lowers his head, choosing to say nothing.
âCatfishâŚyou have to.â Says Will.
âNo the fuck I donât. I never want her to know. If she knowsâŚsheâll actually see âreal meâ. âFuck-up me.â And I don't want her to yet. I donât want to lose her yet. I donât want her to be afraid. Stop fucking looking at me like that.â
They stop. But only because the ride starts, and they canât see anything other than blurs.
You hate this feeling, this fluttering in your stomach like something is wrong but your heart knows, it knows itâs fine. It has to be. Your mind is spinning, trying to combat the rising anxiety clenching in your chest, doing gymnastics to find reasons to not be alarmed.
Heâs not lying about something. Heâs not. âŚHe promisedâŚ.Iâm just overthinking thisâŚ
You canât. You refuse to even think about it. Confronting the terrible possibility that you mightâve done it again, you might have thrown yourself all in to someone only toâ-no.Â
Heâs not lying. Heâs not. âŚHe promisedâŚ.heâs different. Iâm just overthinking thisâŚ
You can feel butterflies bubbling in your stomach and you feel like you might throw up. Fucking men. You huff in frustration and try to distract yourself with your surroundings, watching people on rides, sharing funnel cake. Your eyes scan over two men staring at you silently by a skewered chicken cart and in your current mood it makes you furious. âWhat the fuck are you staring at?!â You growl at them. They say nothing and slowly walk away, disappearing into the crowd. Fucking. Men.
You try not to let your emotions show. You sit back while Gabi goes on some rides for her age, using the time to rehydrate and calm yourself down. Living through Gabiâs joy helps.. Sheâs having a blast, choosing a different person to pair with for each time ride. Pope in the Wacky House, the Helicopters with her dad, Benny on the mini Viking ship. Once you feel better you join in to play bumper cars (Will and Gabi win) and ride the high-rise swings with her seated in the cool metal chair next to you, Benny singing along to the ambient speakers playing âOut of My Leagueâ so loud eventually all the other teens on the ride join in.You enjoy the mini coaster more than you thought you would considering itâs for kids Gabiâs age, you and Dali are the only others who can fit in the seats, no matter how hard Benny tried. It was easy to quickly forget.
After the coaster, Gabi begins to slow down, so you hit the fried oreo stand, paying for several batches despite protestation and alternately feeding everyone as the group slowly walks through the agricultural parts of the fair. Itâs calmer here, the air warm and quiet. The pathway is less crowded so Gabi is able to frolic around on the walkway in front of you safely.Â
You walk through every barn, stopping to pet every animal. Sheâs a natural with them. Completely fearless, not one flicker of apprehension as she approaches cows and horses that are easily 6 times her height, paying close attention to her dad in how to not spook them. Everyone finds the goats to be the favorite because of the sounds they make. Even more so when Frankie engages in a screaming contest back and forth with a bunch of them until someone shoos them out of the pavilion.
Soon, all the sugar Gabi consumed rears its ugly head in the rabbit barn, she throws a fit when Frankie wonât let her get a pet rabbit and you only just catch her upper arm in time to keep her from collapsing on the filthy barn floor. Youâre surprised she held out so long. Even you were crashing and getting tired. Also, the rabbits were ridiculously cute.
âListen Gabi, how about we ride the ferris wheel? Would you like that?â You kneel before her, swiping the tears off her cheeks as she catches her breath. âIt goes really high! Higher than the swings!â She nods, sniffing in a snot bubble as she takes your hand. The two of you lead the way, and as you get closer and closer, you start to regret your decision.Â
Itâs much taller than the Freak Out. By more than 100 feet. It doesnât look very stable either.
âWait...thisâŚthis looks kind of high, donât you think?â You turn to the guys, trying to conceal the wavering in your voice. You were scared enough at 70 feet. This was more like 200.
âHeight requirement says sheâs fine. And itâs enclosed, goes really slow. Come on.â Frankie takes you by the hand and your heart leaps into your throat, your feet skidding across the lawn as you try to pull back.Â
A light shove pushes you forward and you turn to glare at Will as he smirks down at you. âIf you donât go Iâm never going to let you hear the end of it. Not after you called us âold and broken down.â
Well shit.
âFine.â
Youâre shaking when itâs your turn, the group mad dashing to three cars next to each other so you could talk throughout. Benny pairs with Pope, Gabi is vibrating with excitement as sheâs put into a carriage by Will and Dali, and Frankie is beaming as he motions you towards the left car. He pats your butt as you gingerly step in, waiting until youâre seated before joining you and taking your hand.Â
âBabeâŚare you okay?â
You swallow, grateful itâs dark enough he canât see you trembling. âYep. Iâm good.âÂ
He leans forward in his seat, the glowing phosphorescence of the lights of the ride and around the fair bathing him halfway in a multicolored glow. tThe colors and shadows fold into the angles of his face like rainbow chiaroscuro, an angular stained glass window. He takes your hand again, yours is swallowed in his palm and you close your eyes as he rubs his thumb across the top. The dark beat of Depeche Mode pounds against your chest and echoes in your ears and you briefly imagine this is what it must feel like to drop acid.
âYour hands are really sweatyâŚand youâre breathing really fast. Are you sure youâre okay? HeyâŚâ He squeezes your palm and you open your eyes to meet his. âItâs okay if youâre scared. I wonât joke anymore about it, Iâm sorry.â
You swallow. âItâs just really really high.â
Frankie watches the ride operator out of the corner of his eye passing their car as he makes sure everyone is safely locked in before tugging on your arm slightly. You slide forward minutely, he meets you more than halfway with his large limbs and rests his hands on your hips. You gasp as the ride jolts and begins rolling, lifting the cabs up in the air. His calloused fingertip pushes your head back up.
âHow about I distract you.â He murmurs, shifting forward one inch more, tilting his neck as his soft pouty lips meet yours.Â
You close your eyes, trying to lose your self awareness into him and his mouth and the soft skin of his nose that bumps your cheek and tickles your nose with its little breaths.Â
The lift mechanism suddenly shudders, clunking over something and it feels like when you run over a squirrel in your car. You inhale sharply against Frankieâs lips as your cab jostles back and forth. Not much, but enough for you to slam yourself back against your seat and clutch the seat bottom as hard as you can. Your heart beats wildly and you imagine the ride breaking and dropping you on the ground to be crushed to death by this stupid fucking metal cab.
You feel pressure on your knees and look down, focusing hard to not see double from fear. Frankie cups both in his hands, thumbs lightly stroking the inside of your thighs. âItâs okay.â He reassures, squeezing your knees once more. âProbably an under-greased cog, itâs nothing. They test these things like 50 times a day.â
You simply stare, forcing yourself to nod.Â
âClose your eyes.â
You open your mouth to argue then close it and obey. You trust Frankie, and it canât be any worse.Â
âJust focus on me. AndâŚyou hear the music? Itâs called âEnjoy the Silence.â I was obsessed with this song when it came out. And can you hear Benny below us? I can hear Gabi laughing too. Weâre all okay, youâre okay too.â
You bite your lips into your mouth, focusing on the song and Frankieâs husky voice. The meditative synth pop calms you, and the carefree voices of your friends below does help calm you, but you canât slow down your heartbeat.Â
âIâm okay. Just too much adrenaline.â
The hands on your knees slide up your bare thighs and wrap around the bottoms of them. Frankie pulls you forward in your seat with a smirk. âIâm feeling a little amped up too.â
âFrankie.â
He doesnât respond, his sole focus on your thighs as his hands slide up and up and up until he is just able to slip the tip of one of his fingers under one leg of your shorts. For some reason, it pisses you off.
âFrankie!â You hiss. âPeople could see us.â
âNahâŚâ He shushes you, his finger sliding lower.Â
You clamp your legs shut and push his hand back in his direction. âFrankie, I donât want to right here.âÂ
He sits up. âOh.â
Suddenly you hear Bennyâs voice from below. âHello we are underneath you guys! I donât want to hear any hooking up sounds!â He trolls, and you fully push Frankie back to his side, your cheeks burning in embarrassment.
Itâs the first time you can remember that itâs ever been uncomfortably awkward between the two of you, and youâre not sure why. The silence seems so much more noticeable and weird against the clanking of the Ferris wheel gears and the chattering of random other people.
Youâre not even looking at each other, you realize. When did that happen? Your neck cranes to the left as you gaze at the stars, and when you turn back towards Frankie, he is looking to the right and down at the fair.Â
ââŚIs everything okay?â
His eyes snap back to yours. âYea? Why wouldnât it be?â
âCause I pushed you away, andâŚI dunno, youâre being weird..â
âOh, Iâm sorry, thatâs not intentional. Iâm not upset, câmere.â He opens his arms wide to you, scooting on his bench so thereâs enough room for you.
You hesitate. âWonât itâŚwonât it throw off the balance?â
You feel ridiculous asking but he doesnât laugh at you, just shakes his head slightly. âNah, they wouldnât be able to run this ride if people couldnât sit on the same side.â
You balance awkwardly on the edge of your bench overanalyzing what exact moment during the track of the ride to launch onto his, but you overthink it and end up jostling the cab more than necessary. Frankieâs arms pull you into his side and you burrow your face in his neck as the cab continues to rock. The music fades from Depeche Mode to Lizzo to Lilâ Nas X (Will clearly enjoys that one) and then back to Lizzo, and you forget all about your uneasiness.
He was right. It did feel better being with him.Â
The ride does one more pass then rolls to a halt, letting off you with Frankie and Benny with Santiago. You hover at the exit for Will and Gabi, who have to wait for their cab to reach the platform before dismounting. Frankie takes your hand as you wait.
Gabbyâs adrenaline rush runs out fast, and you spend the remainder of the fair eating more fried Oreos and playing games. Somehow you manage to beat them all at the water shooting game, which amps up the competitiveness to the point youâd rather just watch.
Which is how you end up at the âstarâ game.Â
âWeâre so fucking good at this game, it pisses them off every time.â Laughs Benny, as he shoots the entire Star out perfectly with the gun that is specifically not given enough ammo to achieve this. You hop up on the far side of the counter to watch, noting the way each of you boys handles their weapon and the differences in each. Benny held his gun loosely, like he was relaxed and self assured. It almost seemed like you would be able to slap it out of his hands but you knew he still had an iron grip. Will was precise and, as you expected, âperfect formâ. You could tell just from Popeâs posture change that he was the best shot on the team, youâd never seen him look so focused. Frankie held his with a tense white knuckle grip, the folding stock tucked against his shoulder joint. The tension carrying up his arms as his veins popped out in his forearms and biceps. He looked fucking good. And you wouldnât consider yourself a âgun person.â In fact, you kind of hated them. But there just was something about a strong non-douchey man holding a rifle like that that activated you. Damn the patriarchy. Even Dali is a great shot, though not as good as the guys.
After a few rounds, the carnie finally stopped allowing your posse to keep playing, frustrated that somehow the rigging system didnât work on your group. You lean back on your hands, your legs swinging against the wood counter, observing Benny arguing with the carnie with a smirk. Gabi is passed out in her stroller next to you as Frankie sidles up to you, feeding you a piece of Fried Reeses, then promptly kissing you so the taste floats between you.Â
He hums deeply, stepping closer to you til heâs between your legs. His hands rest low on the top of your thighs. âThis ok?â
You smile. âYes. More than okay. And I want more.âÂ
Frankie beams and cups your face, his lips crashing into yours as he all but breathes you in. You tilt your head and poke his mouth with your tongue. He responds immediately and opens for you, meeting you halfway. You whine softly as his hands leave your cheeks and trail down your back, one hand sneaking a bit lower to discreetly cup your ass. Youâve just wound your legs around his hips and your arms around his neck when you hear a shrill voice cut through the din of the dwindling crowd.
âAre you fucking kidding me?â
Your heart slams to a halt so fast it hurts. You recognize that voice. And so does Frankie. Your heads both snap to the left as a disheveled looking Lex stands there with a bunch of her friends.
Frankie simply stares. She repeats herself. âAre. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me. The BABYSITTER? Are you fucking your BABYSITTER??? Oh FrankieâŚcome onâŚhow pathetic can you be? Sheâs like a child!â
You look at Frankie, receding into himself like a silent, terrified puppy. Youâve never seen him like this before, it unnerves you.
âExcuse me.â You snap back. âI am 28.â
She scoffs. I fucking knew something was going on with you two. And youâre doing this in front of my child?â
âWell, actually, Gabi is sleeping. At least she was, until you came ranting and raving.â You make eye contact with Pope, who reads your perfectly and starts steering Gabiâs stroller away so she canât hear. âWe made sure to be careful for her but why do you even care if we are fucking? You left him! You didnât want him anymore, so it shouldnât fucking matter who he dates.âÂ
âHeâs a drug addict and a pathological liar. He will NEVER change.â
âYea? And you are a drunk, controlling, OCD bitch who canât mind her own fucking business. Heâs happy with me. I trust him. Unlike you. Bye.â You couldnât help yourself, you just fucking hated her.
But that set her off. âDid he tell you why he was suspended?â
âYes, heââ
âDid he tell you he was high, flying a family and he almost injured everyone from a sloppy landing? Did he tell you how he would take Gabi to his drug dealers house with him? How he went on a STUPID fucking mission with these idiots to burglarize a fucking drug lord completely off paper? That I deliberately asked him not to because we had a new baby? That he crashed their helicopter, dropped all their money and shot innocent villagers to keep them from getting it? At children and old men adn women? That because of that, Mollyâs husband was shot in the fucking head by one of those people? And then they couldnât even bring the money back so it was all for no reason?â
Sheâs shouting now, spittle flying from her inebriated lips. One of her friends tries to grab her arm but she shakes them off. People in the crowd are starting to stop and watch. âThen, THEN, he treated me like shit, saying horrible things to me just when he was mad, throwing things, scaring me!â
You feel like you canât breathe, itâs too much information all at once. â...What? I donâtâŚNo. no, he said he was on a delta missionââ
âOh sweetheart,â She sneers condescendingly. âHe was on a greed mission. He was retired from delta. This was like a year ago. They all wanted to get rich and robbed a fucking drug kingpin and Frankie shot innocent people to make sure he got alllllll that money. And because of that, his friend was shot and killed and his family has NO idea why. He lied to you.â
You turn to look at him, and all his friends. Everyone is silent, trying not to look up from the ground. Dali looks as bewildered as you. âFrankieâŚ?â Tears water in your eyes and you feel like your heart is going to burst. You thought he told you it was an enlisted mission, but on top of everything else you just learned your thoughts are rushing so fast you canât seem to remember specifics.Â
Frankie canât even look at you. And thatâs how you know.Â
Itâs trueâŚ
âLex. Stop.â Willâs Southern drawl cuts through the silence, the commanding officer in him coming out. âItâs over. This shit between you two has to stop. Enough.â His eyes shift to Lexâs friends, who are nodding and repeating the same thing. Lex finally allows them to pull her away muttering under her breath, sending one last glare in your direction.
The walk to the truck is silent. The ride home is a foggy blur. But the minute you step into the house, you crack.Â
âFrankie please tell me all this is not true.â You canât read him at all, his face is completely blank as he moves around you towards Gabiâs bedroom to tuck her in.
So you wait.
His hackles are already up when he comes back out.
âFrankieââ
âYea.â
âWell?â
âYea. Itâs true. We tried to steal money from one of Popeâs cases and it backfired and Tom got shot.â
âBecause of you.â
His expression changes then, from blank nothing to vicious defensive anger. âYea. Because of me. I fucked up the flight back and we crash landed and these fuckinâ villagers were gonna take the money! And it was an accident!â
âYou âaccidentallyâ shot innocent people?â
He swallows, his jaw clenching and unclenching. You can see heâs doing mental gymnastics in order to avoid accountability.Â
âDid your finger slip?â
No answer.Â
âFrankie. Did your finger slip on the trigger?â
You already know the answer before he says it. And somehow itâs like he morphs into a Disney villain as he says it. âNo. My finger didnât slip.â
It burns, the sharp pain in your heart that makes you feel like itâs having a seizure or forgot how to pump blood or is pumping too much blood. âHow many people did you kill.â
He shrugs. âI dunno.â
âYou donât know? How can you not know?! Frankie, you told me this was your job! You- you fucking lied to me! I-I I asked you if you were hiding anything else from me and you fucking lied to me!â You canât help your voice raising, the tears spilling out of your eyes as you realize how fucking stupid you had been. Somewhere in the background you can hear Gabi has woken and is hysterically crying. Frankie, clearly having enough, turns back towards her room. But you continue, screaming at his back. âAnd thatâs why Tom is dead? And his family doesnât know why?!â
Frankie doesnât answer and suddenly you are enraged. You run behind him and shove him forward. âIâm fucking talking to you! How can you just be so fucking blase about this??? AndâŚall that other shit???âI feel like I donât know you at all!â
He whirls around, that furious murderous face you âve seen him give others is finally directed at you. âBecause you donât!â He screams back, his teeth nash and he shoves a finger one inch from your face. You flinch.
âFrankie, youâre scaring me.â
âIâm scaring you? Really? I thought this was your thing?âÂ
You blink, confused, tears stalling on your face. âDonâtââ You plead softly.
âNo, Lex is right. Youâre a naive little girl who thinks she can save worthless idiots like me and live some fucking fantasy happily ever after. You wonât. You canât. Iâm unfixable.â
âHow can you say that!! Frankie, I love you!
He scoffs. âI know you think you do. And I know you arenât stupid, you told me youâve done this before. But guess what sweetie, you arenât better, youâre still doing it because youâre so fucking desperate for someone to love you. You donât love me. You just want to feel like some fucking savior.â
âNo! No⌠I didnât, I donâtâŚyou told me you loved me!â
âI wanted to fuck you.â His eyes are black as far, itâs like you donât even recognize his face anymore. Lex was right. Lex was right. HowâŚdid you make all of it up in your head?
âYouâŚYouâre a fucking psychoâŚI feel like you emotionally manipulated me into caring for you only for you to play games with me! I specifically told you I couldnât go through this again and you fucking did it anyway!â
âHey, you kissed me. And you were fun to fuck, I will admit that. Let me do fucking anything. But we both knew this would happen. You set yourself up. I did shoot those villagers. I caused Tomâs death. I just wanted the fucking money. And I wanted to kill a bunch of kids too, when they got in my way. Fuckinâ teenagers and I told Pope to fucking shoot them all. And you know what else? We went back and got all that fucking money we hid, and we are fucking swimming in it. And I didnât share a goddamn dime with my ex. Youâre right. I am a psycho, so itâs a good thing this is over. Pack your shit and leave me alone.â
âFuck you Frankie.â
You donât wait another moment. You donât need to be asked twice this time. You shove him aside on your way down the hallway, doing everything you can not to let the second round of tears fall. Heâd seen enough.
You slam the door of the master bedroom behind you, frantically bouncing around different points in the room to grab all your shit. When did all of this stuff even get here? Anxiety bubbles up your chest until you canât take it anymore and say fuck it, he can just throw anything else out. I have to get out of here.
You rush back down the hallway like a speed demon, praying to whatever that he wonât be standing in the hallway still. He isnât. Heâs sitting on his couch facing away from you, his head in his hands. You hate yourself for wanting to go comfort him. Heâs rightâŚIâm
not betterâŚ
You pause on the front doorway, struggling to say what needs to be said. Donât be weak. Donât keep letting people do this to you over and over. âDonât contact me.I never want to see you again.â You say to his back.
He doesnât move a muscle, or even look at you. âYou wonât.â
You were able to make it halfway across the lawn before the grief fully hit. By the time you got to your car you were gasping like you were no longer able to breathe. And the minute your car door shut you broke, a wailing sob bursting from your lips as you bury your face in your palms.Â
Again. It happened again. And itâs just as crushing as every other time, except now it feels like you never healed from the others and now they are all piling on top of the other with this one as the final blow.
Why. WHY? Was there something wrong with you? Why were you never enough? Why couldnât you make them stay? What did you do to keep having to go through this? It almost killed you last time, your eyes squeeze shut as you remember the look on your parents face as they watched you writhe on your bed screaming and crying hysterically from your latest breakup.
And why did you let yourself fall into it again, like you had never learned a goddamn thing. It was like you were masochistic, you told yourself you would never need someone again so badly, you wouldnât enmesh yourself so fully that when it fell apart you could barely function. Your heart was once again ripped out of your chest and thrown to the floor, the cracks from before making this shattering into pieces so small you know it canât get repaired again.
With a trembling whimper, you pull your face out of your hands and wipe your eyes, your nose. You realize youâre still sitting in Frankieâs driveway and you immediately look to see if he's at the window, concerned for you. He isnât. You hate yourself for it but it breaks you even more.Â
Itâs over.
You drive home mindlessly, your Spotify on shuffle and you arenât aware of anything else. Just get home. Just get home and then you can cry, try to move on. But you already know you wonât.Â
You finally tire yourself out of tears, and you try to talk yourself up, turning up the music and chanting âitâs okayâ to yourself.Â
Itâs Coldplay. You always liked Coldplay.Â
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try, you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix youâŚ
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face, and Iâ
You slam the on/off button so hard you actually cause the auxiliary cord to malfunction, so you rip it out of your phone and throw the damn thing on the passenger seat. You drive home in silence.
Itâs dark in the lot when you arrive. You park in a spot along the side and towards the back because the lot is mostly full. The only light shining is the pole yards away, the bulb switches off and on opposite of the dark one right above you.Â
You feel numb. You can still feel sticky dried tears on your face, but your ability to utter a sound is gone. You close your eyes and try to compose yourself, simply sitting in your car in the dark. Youâre avoiding going upstairs, you know. Youâve pretty much been living at Frankieâs. Walking through that door would make it feel too âofficialâ. You cover your face with your hands and rub the tears tracks off your raw face, and are about to take a breath and gather your shit when a THWACKING sound bursts right in your left ear.
You startle with a yelp and look out your window, prepared to tell off whoever is messing with you, but freeze when you find yourself face to face with the barrel of a gun, the only thing separating you from it is the shitty window glass on your cheap car.
ââââââââş

Can we please please get more with your Magnetic series! So goodddd
Hi! Sure đ I can do little check ins for them! Feel free to send in any requests for anything specific youâd like to see from this pair! In the meantime here's this little thing:)
If you havenât read the fics you can find them here!
It had been nearly two months since you and Harry got together, but you kept it on the down low because you both expected that his ex would immediately alert the media in one way or another. Only your families and closest friends knew that you were together. You really were just waiting for the other shoe to drop shortly after the break up but it never came.
Harry had been working on an album quietly for a while that was going to be released soon. So Jeffrey and Tommy had also been hoping the news would drop quickly so that it wouldn't impact the press release for his music. When they had run the completed album by the label they decided on a release date for the single and it would be dropping soon so that they could release the full album in time for the Grammy nominations is what Harry was sharing with you at the moment as you got ready for bed.
"-so we're releasing the first single on Friday, the second one at the end of the month and the album in August." he shared as he got his moisturizer on and you hummed in response with a distant gaze. "What?" he asked you and you bit your lip nervously.
"I just have an awful feeling about this, H." you explained and he frown.
"About what?"
"She's waiting for you to do something to talk about the infidelity. She's going to ruin your album drop." you said and he frowned.
"You think so?" he asked with concern and you nodded.
"I think she will. Based on what you told me about how you two left things, I mean...she has a lot of contempt for you. And like...obviously, we made a mistake, there's no escaping that fact. So I think you should prepare for your music release but also for an apology tour." you said and he sighed.
"I don't think I need to address it or defend myself. It's no one's business." he said with a resolute shrug of his shoulders.
"I know it's not, baby. But if it's made public then you owe it to the people who support you to be accountable for your actions, Harry." you said and he sighed before biting on the inside of his cheek pensively. "You're human. You're allowed to make mistakes." you reminded.
"I know that."
"Then what's the problem?"
"What if everyone hates me after that? Like...I don't want to disappoint or hurt anyone."
"Well that's unrealistic." you said simply and he smiled a bit, "And well, at the end of the day those people don't know who you are in here." you said as you placed a palm over his heart. "They don't know how or why you do the things you do or how you think. And honestly, isn't it just more refreshing when people are forthright about their mistakes?"
"Okay, but ummm...what about you? What if everyone turns on you. It's happened before with people I've been with, where they've been villainized for being with me. Especially, if they really liked the person I was with previously." he explained and you smiled.
"Well, we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. And well, I love you and you love me. We make each other happy. I mean, if things go to shit then...at least we have each other." you shrugged and he smiled.
"Right." he confirmed. "I just need you to know that if things come to that, I need you to know that I don't regret anything. You make me so fucking happy. I love you in ways I never knew were possible and I couldn't ask for a better partner." he said sweetly as he ran his thumbs over the apples of your cheeks.
"I love you so much." you whispered happily.
***************
Just as you thought, the day after Harry had released his first single an "anonymous source" dropped the story to TMZ about how Harry had cheated on his ex-girlfriend with none other than Rob Stringer's niece. Your family and close friends knew about it already but were still rocked by the information going public. Obviously, the information wasn't all that detailed because she didn't know how many times you two had slept together, but because you were pictured at his show in Reggio everyone assumed it had started then. That wasnât necessarily wrong, but everyone just thought he had been cheating the whole time and it was hard. You could see how it affected him to see what people were thinking of him and especially you. But you just wanted to protect him so badly but it was all out in the open now and there was nothing you could really do about it until he got his chance to address it. You knew he didn't expect you to be strong about it because what some people were saying was rather hurtful, but you wanted to be for him. You were okay though because at the end of everything it was still you and him together and that was all you cared about.
The night before his interview with Zane Lowe, Harry hardly slept a wink. He spent half the night in his home studio where the interview would be taking place until you coaxed him to at least come lay down while you talked through things. You talked with him about all of his fears and concerns, you went through the pre-approved interview questions about the affair portion of your relationship and by the time it was 7am and everyone arrived to set up you had only slept maybe 2 hours, so you were exhausted, but ready to just get this over it.
Zane was the most kind man. He was also very cordial with Harry, they weren't friends per se, but they emailed each other on birthdays and things like that. Harry trusted him; he was intelligent, articulate and genuine. You didn't talk to him all that much as you were fluttering about taking coffee orders to call them in and pick up the breakfast sandwiches you had ordered the day prior. You were just about to grab Jeffrey who agreed to help you. When you approached, the four of them were sitting in your living room discussing Childish Gambino's new album animatedly. You were smiling as you walked up while watching Harry discuss the final track, "Final Church", with Tommy. He was radiating so much passion, it made your heart flutter and you remembered why you were so in love with him. He just loved engaging, feeling, and living. He was so good at being present and was teaching you how to be the same, so immersed in every moment that you couldn't help but be grateful for existing.
Zane just took a moment to just observe as you stood there and admired Harry with literal hearts in your eyes. The second you stopped before him, he immediately turned to look at you with a matching gaze. But more than that, there was an immediate warm and happy feeling that started overtaking the air around you. After a moment of holding each other's gaze Harry's smile had his eyes crinkling as he reached out towards your hand.
"Hiya, angel." he greeting you sweetly and you glanced away timidly, locking eyes with Zane for a second before feeling your face start to heat up before looking back at harry.
"Hi." you peeped out, "Ummm, I've got everyone's order in. We're gonna run and grab the sandwiches and then the coffees." you informed.
"Alright." he nodded as he pushed himself up to stand, "Be safe out there." he mumbled as you hugged and then he pulled back and pecked your lips, "Need you around. Forever." he said through a smile before pecking your lips again.
"Forever." you responded quietly through a smile. Seconds later you and Jeffrey were off.
**************
After everyone had their breakfast it was time to get started. Harry wanted you and his managers in the room for the interview. So you just sat off-camera but still within his view. You could see that he was tense as the camera crew finished getting settled and moments later the director was counting down for them to start.
Harry was completely honest when Zane asked him how he was doing. He said that he was feeling a lot of things through a nervous chuckle. He was happy with his life and his music, but nervous with everything else going on in the media. In an acknowledgement to that, Zane decided to start with the music first. The things that Harry really wanted to talk about and share with his fans. As always, there was excellent conversation revolving the album, as Zane had already gotten to hear it.
"Genuinely, this is some of your most honest work yet." Zane said and Harry smiled a bit and nodded, "And it almost seems like...there's two versions of you writing in here. Almost like a call and response thing." he pointed out and Harry nodded.
"Yeah, I suppose that's a good way to explain it." he chuckled nervously, already knowing where this line of questioning would lead. You watched him as he started to bounce his knee a bit. You wished you could just walk over there and encourage him for a moment.
"Yeah, that's what it seems like to me. But surprisingly it's not necessarily conflicting. It's more like dialoging. Like you're trying to...come to terms with yourself."
"Yeah, I think it was something like that."
"Are you still feeling that now?" he asked and Harry shook his head with a small smile.
"Thankfully, not." he confirmed as he glanced down into his lap. It was odd for him because he was one to hold eye contact all the time, all the way through.
"I think you might know where I'm going with this." Zane said with a smile, "I'm no gossip reporter, but in hearing you bearing your heart like this in your music and then seeing what was apparently going on in the background. It just...makes sense. You know?"
"Yeah." Harry hummed. There was a moment of silence.
"I know there's been some pretty...harsh things thrown around and I can imagine it's hard when you're also trying to celebrate what you've done with this new project..." Harry nodded, "So...How are you?" Zane asked and Harry sighed before biting his lip and glancing up at Zane.
"Can we take a short break?" he asked and Zane nodded.
"Of course." he said and you immediately stood and walked over to him. He stood up and hugged you tight as he exhaled shakily.
"You're alright, baby. S'alright." you hummed. "Hey, look at me." you said and he pulled further back. "I love you."
"Love you." he whispered.
"Just take ownership." You said and he nodded. "You don't have to go into any the details."
"Right." he hummed, "I'm glad it was you." he said and you smiled.
"I love you, H."
"I love you too, angel." he whispered before hugging you close again for a few moments.
"You've got this." you encouraged him with a small smile. "I'll be right over there." you assured and he nodded.
Moments later you were back in your seat and they were getting started again. And Harry shared about how he'd been. How he was just sad over what people were saying about you more than the things about him. But that overall he was feeling happier than he had in a while.
"I think it's always interesting how split people always seem to be. Some people defend your happiness and others kind of villainize you to the extreme." he said and Harry nodded.
"Yeah, that can happen." he said with a sad smile. "Clearly we did a bad thing. I did a bad thing. There's not denying that." he said, "But I can't say it was a mistake. The heart wants what it wants and at the end of the day I had to follow where my heart was taking me." he said and Zane smiled.
"I must say, seeing you with Y/N is very telling. Just in being around you, I can feel the affection for each other oozing from you two." he said and Harry smiled bashfully.
"Yeah...I'm so lucky to have her love me back. She makes me so happy." he smiled as he glanced over to you off camera and you smiled back.
"And how's it been for her?"
"Hard. But she's kept her head up more than I have. She's been really supportive and graceful through all of it." he said with a smile. "It's just sad to see people rip into her as if any of this were solely her fault." Zane nodded at Harry's response.
"There are a lot of people out there right now saying you don't deserve to be happy after hurting someone like that. Do you have any thoughts about that? Do you think you deserve to be as happy as you are?" he asked and Harry sighed before crossing one leg over the other.
"Well... to me, it's not about what I do or don't deserve. The fact is that I get to choose who I love. I'm just a person like everyone else, I can make that decision with or without anyone else's approval. So I'm with Y/N to stay. I'm in this and I couldn't be happier with that decision." he smiled simply before looking over at you off-camera again and you were already returning his smile.
When it was all over Harry felt lighter. You had been right about this interview. As scary as this was for him to say these things on camera, all that mattered was that at the end of everything you had chosen each other and no matter how the general public perceived this, the people that mattered the most knew everything and still showered you with their love and support. They saw every day how your love made you both step into the best versions of yourself and at the end of the day that's what it was all about, finding a partner to grow through life with. And well, you couldn't have asked for a better person to share this all with.

The real purpose of Meghan's PR is getting us to forget the past year by u/thyfairykingdom
The real purpose of Meghan's PR is getting us to forget the past year I realized this morning â it's been a year since the Jubilee (i.e., candle, getting booed by the crowd) and almost a year since the Queen's death (i.e., getting glared at by Catherine), two events that actually wounded her a lot more than she'd ever admit. As much as she acts like she doesn't care, public disapproval is her kryptonite, and I feel like her public/media appearances have changed in nature since getting booed. I was shocked by this realization because, despite being a long-time Sinner (I've had a weird feeling about her from the get-go and I've been here since there were 800), we are constantly so saturated with her appearances and ridiculous PR articles. Sure, we laugh at the PR every time. It's obvious, it's fake, it's staged and try-hard. We see through it and take it apart. We see her and her desperation to become someone. However, I feel like the real purpose of those PR articles is to bury their deeper failures and scandals. Or at least to push them to the back of our minds. And I'm afraid that I feel like it's working! Possibly part of it is that our community has grown exponentially since then, but it actually shocks me how much she can get us to not talk about. Like, we might know it happened, but we aren't always talking about her and Harry getting booed. I am sure that was a moment of real pain for her and that she still thinks about it! She wants people to forget it because it was genuinely humiliating for her. Or the "chase" through Manhattan which â as a native NYer who was in Manhattan at that time on that day â was completely nuts, happened just a few months ago, and has been buried all the same in the flurry of PR. My point is, their team is keeping us busy debunking the newest articles. They don't expect anyone to bite, but they're trying to rehab her image by distracting us. Better to bore us, make us scoff, than for us to remember the booing. They'll spam as many stupid articles and weird appearances as they need to. If even a long-time sinner like me forgets/becomes apathetic, then they'll achieve their aims. In a way I admire it. So, at a minimum â let's not forget her behavior at the Jubilee or at the time of the Queen's death/funeral. She sashayed down the isle with Harry. She got booed. She faked crying at the Queen's casket. She arranged a pap picture of KC receiving QE's body. Like I can understand why things get lost; she's utterly exhausting and all her behavior is so absurd that leaving it out of the narrative makes us forget. But let's not forget. post link: https://ift.tt/gKUEPQF author: thyfairykingdom submitted: August 21, 2023 at 01:13PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

now that we're a week out from the finale, i'm feeling settled enough to make my sappy post. TL;DR is: fable has been incredibly important to me, and i think it's a story that's important to have out there. to the community and cast, you've made something beautiful and helped me more than you could know.
so here we go-
i started watching fable in the summer of 2022, to kill time in between summer courses (and thank fuck for that, cause my brain desperately needed to have some fun after 5 hours a day of doing psych stats by hand.) i was originally pulled in by vo'lete, as dissecting a conlang is really fun to me. it became basically the only media i consumed, as 2022/2023 was the fourth year of my BA and i was crazy busy. and then the characters pulled me in further with their earnestness and their devotion to redemption and compassion.
i think one of the theses of fable is "people always deserve happiness. doing awful things doesn't erase your ability to change." and i think the simplicity and love of that take hit really close to home. in the era of modern fandom where bad actors try to make everything black and white, it's an important point to make.
i started making shitposts on tumblr, started enaging with stories from an analysis standpoint again, and found a lot of joy in the community here. i don't have the words for what that means to me, so i'll just default to you guys are great <3
then mid-august happened
those of you who frequent rin's streams might have caught bits and pieces of this, but basically, i had a fall and my knee became royally fucked beyond belief. it can only be fixed with a surgery that's not very common. the pain was (and still is) debilitating to the point that i had to drop out of my second degree, and couldn't walk more than like, a block every few days. my life, my dreams, my future all got put on hold. i was in a new city with no supports, no friends, and no way to leave my apartment. fable went from the only media i consumed to the only thing i did, period.
the fandom became the only people i talked to regularly, other than my family, as online relationships were the only ones possible to maintain. in fableblr and in rin's chat i've found people who i really click with, people whose company i enjoy and who enjoy mine. when i was lying in bed, feeling so alone and less than human, having people on the internet go "i know who you are and you are making an impact," quite frankly, kept me sane. i know i don't talk to people super often, but know that seeing you in my notifs brings me so much joy, and i'd love to talk to you more.
to assuage any worries- i'm doing a bit better now. i've moved back in with my parents so i have human contact and people who can make up for the things i can't do. i have a new doctor who is taking the severity of my condition very seriously and is fighting to get me treated asap. i'll be okay.
so yeah. fable has been super important to me, and will remain so! for me it's a story with so much joy and deep feelings and rediscovery of passions and just. fun. it's been so much fun. and i'm not letting go of that fun any time soon. i'm gonna keep making and watching and enjoying.
to sage, corn, and cob- you guys are great, i cherish every time we get to talk. i hope that it's okay that i count you among my friends
to my other mutuals and people who are here frequently- recognizing you in my notes is such a joy and i hope to get to know you better. y'all are cool and i'm glad you think i'm funny
to rin- thank you for nurturing your little community and creating a space where i have so much fun. also thank you for putting up with my constant setting off of automod
to beck- thank you for making a story that explores sisterhood in all its ugliness and beauty, that shows how even families full of love can fuck up, that holds space for loneliness and loss and joy and fear and new beginnings
to the rest of the cast- thank you for making a story with so many varied and yet connected points, characters and world. with so much love in it. you've truly done something special here and its impact will not be forgotten
to all of you- thank you for knowing my name. thank you for breathing life and joy into these stories. i can't wait to see what else we make. <3

Where Have I Been?
hello lovelies. so, I started the challenege, did one day, and all of a sudden I feel off the face of the earth. I fell into a bit of a depression, and while I've managed to pull myself out, life has been busy busy busy! This is probably the 2nd busiest week of the year (the 1st will be in August, and you'll find out why). Here's an update on life:
I fly to Colorado on the 16th, so....under 5 days now. I haven't packed or anything yet, but I plan on doing that either tomorrow or Thursday. And I have to clean and prepack for when I return because....
I signed a new lease for a new place to live! I'll have roommates who I haven't met yet (I'm taking over someone lease, actually), but my lease starts August 18th. I return from Colorado on the 14th of August, so....I'm going to be very busy once I return.
I decided to call it quits on getting a 2nd job. It's going to mess up the schedule with my first job, and it would only make me 200$ more a month, which I'm not worried about missing our on since I'll still sell stuff on depop once I return from Colorado and I'm going full time at my current job.
I've gone out to lunch with my dad a few times as well, it's been really nice hanging out with him and spending time with my dad. I lucked out in the dad department and spending time with him is one of my favorite things!
I've been debating going to San Fransisco in October for an XG concert, but I don't know if I'll have the money or ability to anymore. (thank you new apartment and all those fees and expenses!)
my anxiety has been terrible. I haven't changed anything about what I do, but I did squish a lot of anxiety inducing things into the span of two weeks, which....my bad on that. Now I know, don't do that to myself.
I bought new makeup! The juvias place bronzer, charlotte tillbury setting spray, nyx eyebrow stuff, and blush, ughhh I love buying new makeup, I just wish it didn't cost money!
I've gotten better at doing my makeup! I've had people not even notice I'm wearing it because it looks natural despite being like, a full face! Thank you perfect color matches on my skin tint, foundation, and concealors!
I went to two movies with a friend. We saw the new Strangers: Chapter One and the Planet of the Apes movie. Both were definitely good, in my opinion.
I now have to plan with my boyfriend for when he needs to come down here and get his stuff and work out changing the utilities to our roommates name since I'm leaving. I don't feel like it should be my job to coordinate that, but oh well. I guess it's too hard for him and his best friend (my roommate) to call each other for once?? Ugh, men get on my nerves sometimes.
I need to ask my dad and a friend to help me move upon my return, which also means I won't be able to work that weekend, which kind of sucks.
I need to declutter my room and start throwing away things I don't want or need anymore this week to make it easier on myself when I return from Colorado but hahaha I procrastinate a lot.
I'm stressed about paying rent. I'll have to pay rent for here and rent/fees for the new place before august and then September's rent for the new place, and my new rent is about double what I pay now. so yayy, adulting and finances. I don't feel qualified to be an adult, but here I am, age 21, an adult.
That's about it for now! Lots of stress, lots of anxiety, lots of stuff happening super close together. But that's life, I guess. Forgive me for my absence from my blogs. I also stopped studying spanish for now, and my routines are non-existent. Colorado will change that, tho, for sure. I do plan on updating a little more frequently once things settle down when I'm in Colorado. but for now, it'll be kinda here and there with my posting.
thank you for all the patience and kindness, lovelies. til next time đŠˇ

ROYAL ASSASSIN ABRIDGED: PART TWO
My friend Razz wants to understand my shitposting about Robin Hobbâs Farseer Trilogy, but they donât want to actually have to read the books, so Iâm summarizing it for them (and you)! (Check out all the other entries in the Farseer Trilogy Abridged series at the masterpost. Also if you think Iâm funny you can send me a ko-fi from there.)
EDIT: added some strikethroughs where they were supposed to go and put something funny where I had just left the reminder to write something funny. Last Time on Dragon Book Z (rip Toriyama sensei), Fitz finally made it home from the mountains. Heâd seen via Skill-o-Vision that Molly had been viked by Vikings, and he was desperate to see if sheâd flagged herself âsafeâ from Being Raided on FacebookâŚ
The next day, Fitz is minding his own business being told by Cook Sara that he looks like shit when he spontaneously decides to climb sixty four flights of stairs. Considering that his tiny teenaged body is still 89% poison by volume and he just got home from the worst road trip of his life (so far!), by the time he gets to the top he's facedown on the floor, pushing himself along by his toes.
âHello, Lil Accident,â Verity says, putting down his binoculars. âWow, you look like shit.â
âSo Iâve been told,â Fitz mumbles to the floor. âYou look a lot less skeletal than when I last saw you.â
 âThanks! I had sex.â
Fitz tries to get up and fails. âI didn't even know you'd be up here.â
âAha, but you see, I Skilled you here, and you didn't even know it. In fact I've been balls-deep in your brain for a week with you none the wiser, because this is a thing I can do with the Skill.â
Fitz spits out a mouthful of dust. âWow, when do I get to learn that kind of thing?â
âNever,â Verity smiles, turning back to the window. âCome look at my ships.â
Dragging himself up to the windowsill, Fitz peeks out. âNeat! We'll be able to defend ourselves against the Vikings with these for sure!â
âYes,â Verity growls. âAnd I can't wait to continue the cycle of violence by going all the way to the Viking home planet and viking them back!â
Somewhere downstairs, the Fool rubs his temples, sighing loudly.
âAnyway, now that I've forced you to climb all the way up here, let's go back down so I can get something to eat.â Verity picks Fitz up by the scruff of his neck. âI want to hear all about your little trip to the Big Onion.â
They head down to Verity's man cave, and after watching 'ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE ENDING EXPLAINEDâ WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO AUGUST,' Verity reads the comments, most of which point out that Regal should have totally died in a fire for plotting to kill his own brother and murdering a bunch of the wedding party.
Fitz looks at the hay bale in the corner, where the Fool is updating his Linkedin. âListen, I have a way bigger part in this book than the last one,â the Fool says without looking up. âI'm not gonna have time to re-explain who everybody is to you whenever you want. I've got a big death scene coming up.â
âYou're going to die?!â Fitz cries.
 âSomeone is,â the Fool murmurs.
âYou're probably wondering why I haven't punished Regal for any of the stuff he did last book,â Verity says, steepling his fingers. âAnd the truth is, I'm not going to, because he'll just throw a temper tantrum about it and I don't want to deal with that.â
âWhat if he tries to kill one of us again?â
âPff, don't worry about it, Lil Accident.â Verity waves him off. âYou can take tomorrow off to go look for your dead girlfriend.â
Fitz stands up. âThanks Prince Verity, I'm gonna go have a seizure before bed.â
But as soon as he steps out of the room, Lacey jumpscares him and drags him off to go see Lady Patience, who is laying in a pile of her current hyperfixations. âYou missed the wedding,â she says accusingly.
âSorry, Mrs. My Dead Dad's Wife,â Fitz sighs. âRegal tried to, uh, do whatever the opposite of poisoning me and trying to drown me is, and now whenever I get excited I fall over.â He accepts a glass of wine from Lacey, then dumps it over his head. âI've gotta move on to the next plot point now.â
Fitz is staggering up the stairs, leaving a wet smear of RosĂŠ after him, when a Servant Girl comes to take his arm. âHere, sir,â she says sweetly. âLet me help you weave drunkenly back to your chambers. Wouldn't want you falling down the stairs and breaking your stupid lying neck.â
âThanks, mysterious servant girl. You can drop me off at the corner, Iâll walk from here.â
But instead of letting him have a seizure in peace, the Servant Girl punches him in the gut and kicks him in the nads, because she's Molly!
âHoly shit, you're alive!â Fitz sobs. âOh man, I had a vision that you got viked, it was awfulââ
Molly kicks him in the nads again. âI did get viked, and afterwards I came here looking for you to ask you to loan me some cash, or get married to me. My dumb ass went around to all the servants going 'hey, have you seen the scribe's apprentice, he looks just like FitzChivalry Farseer,' and someone filmed me and made a TikTok titled 'tfw you find out your boyfriend is really The Bastard.'â
 âOh,â Fitz cringes.
âYeah 'oh,'â Molly says. âIt has sixteen million views and hashtag Cat-Fitzed is trending on Twitter.â
âIt's called X now,â Fitz squeaks. âWhat about the older, hotter guy I saw you walking off with?â
âThat was my cousin,â Molly snarls. âDo you think I'd date someone with an earring?â
âGosh, it's a good thing I don't wear one of those,â Fitz says, polishing his collar.
âAnyway, you're gross and I hate you,â Molly declares. âDo not, under any circumstances, continue to attempt to woo me. Goodbye.â
Despite Fitz's best efforts, he continues to have a seizure any time he tries to do anything except have a seizure. Even into the next day, he's still ragdolling like a character in a seventy dollar video game on release day. The Fool appears briefly to catch a glimpse of Fitz in his underwear, but before they can do any real flirting, Lacey and Patience show up again.
âListen, Prince Dumbass,â Patience says, âyou fucked up bigtime letting Molly think she was in your league. She came here thinking you'd grown up in a double-wide same as her, drinking off-brand kool aid and saving butter containers to use as tupperware. When people found out you lied to her, they started calling her a hump-and-dump.â
âBut we never even humped,â Fitz objects.
âAnd it's a good thing, too, because as royalty you're only allowed to hump at the King's pleasure. Princes are not allowed to run around sticking their dick in whoever they want, that's how we ended up with you. You'd just make a bunch more Fitzes, and we don't have enough paid extras anymore to traumatize *all* of those kids.â
âWe could drown them,â Lacey suggests, working on a cross-stitch that says 'GALS BEING PALS.'
âThey wouldn't be Fitzes if me and miss Molly got married,â Fitz says. âI'll just go and do that real quick.â
Patience whacks him in the head with a rolled up newspaper. âNo! You're going to marry whoever the King tells you to marry, and no one else. We learned our lesson with Chivalry: we can never, ever allow you to have any control over your life whatsoever, and that includes caring about anyone other than whoever is wearing a crown that day. Besides, didn't you already sign a contract to do whatever King Shrewd told you to do without question forever?â
âI was nine, I don't really feel like that was bindingââ
Patience grabs Fitz by the front of his shirt and jerks him forward. âDo not,â she says, âhave sex with Molly. Do NOT have sex with Molly. DO NOT HAVE SEX WITH MOLLY.â
âNo promises,â Fitz shrugs. âHey, do you have a backstory other than being the ADHD widow of my deadbeat dad?â
Patience runs away crying. As soon as she's gone, Chade shows up. âHey,â he says gently. âDon't cry. Kettricken's dad roped her into a political marriage and now she's miserable and lonely. That can happen for you, too.â
 âThis sucks,â Fitz moans.
âRemember not to have sex with Molly,â Chade says as he crawls back into his wall-hole.
âWhatever. I'm going down into town to find my soulmate.â
Fitz, wearing his slouchiest beanie, his blackest hoodie, and his unhappiest expression of teenaged angst, stomps down the road into Buckkeep town, hands shoved in his pockets. âStupid Farseers,â he mutters. âAlways hasslin' me and tellin' me what to do. What do they know? Man, nobody understands what it's like to be me.â
*Oh, you you think you got it bad, little bitch boy?*
The entire fandom erupts into cheers and applause as the character in possession of the single teaspoon of sense in the entire series arrives.
Fitz looks up, snarling, and locks eyes with a wolf trapped in a cage labeled 'ESSENTIAL NPC'. The angry little ball of fluff is just one of many wares sold by a dude in a full body fursuit. âGood morrow, emo child,â Fursuit says, oozing greasily forward. âI see you eyeballing that young cub. You know, an animal like that could really be useful if, say, you were a royal Bastard with Doctor Doolittle magic who was sent out to fight zombies a lot.â
âI'll trade you a pack of gum for him,â Fitz offers.
âHe's worth way more than that,â Fursuit says. âI went through all the trouble of building a rocketship for his wolf-mother and wolf-siblings so they could return to their home planet.â
*I'll kick your ass! I'll kick everyone's ass! I'll kick my own ass!!*
 *'Shut up, I'm negotiating!'*
âA pack of gum AND this cool rock I found,â Fitz bargains expertly, then kicks Fursuit in the shin, grabs the wolf, and runs off.
Fitz carries Wolfcub back up to Buckkeep, looking forward to the 'wrestling with a wild animal to show dominance' scene, but then realizes that the cub is too weak and tiny to put up a good fight. What was even the point of having a pet wolf if he couldn't have a badass fight with it and then stand shirtless against the sunrise? Also, Fitz has already had two canines in his life bond to him and then have to return to their home planets, and he's kind of tired of that happening.
*'My apartment has a no pets policy, so you're gonna have to stay in the tool shed,'* he tells Wolfcub. *'Don't wit-bond to me.'*
Then, with nothing better to do, he leaves to go do the thing Patience and Chade explicitly told him not to: Have Sex With Molly. âThe fuck is wrong with you lately?â Burrich asks, some days later while he and Fitz are hanging out at the bar.
Fitz sighs. âI keep trying to have sex with Molly, but things are always getting in the way of my dick," he says mournfully.
âMm. Been there,â Burrich mutters, pulling down his sleeve to cover up his 'PATIENCE CHIVALRY BITTERNESS AND BURRICH 4 EVER' tattoo. âWhich one is Molly?â
âThe hot one that kicks people in the nuts.â
âOh, yeah. Half my age. I like that in a girl,â Burrich says, and everybody decides to just go with it. âHere's my advice to you: give up and move on. Get your post-rejection glow up, and your girl will go off to marry someone else.â
âThat sounds like it sucks,â Fitz says doubtfully. âWhen do I finally get to have sex with her?â
Burrich grins. âThat's the neat thing! You don't.â
The next morning, Fitz gets out of bed, takes a big, cleansing breath, then puts his earbuds in and turns on his Montage Song.
âTime for that glow up,â he says really loudly because he can't hear himself over the music.
 'Cause baby you're a firework
Fitz wrapping measuring tape around his bicep and frowning;
come on and show 'em what you're worth
running laps around the castle with Wolfcub chasing after him;
make 'em go oh! oh! Oh!
standing on one foot like in Karate Kid while Pat Morita decomposes nearby;
as you you shoot across the sky-ay-ay
Burrich taking away his AXE body spray and shoving him into the shower;
baby you're a firework!
carb-loading at the local Fantasy Pizzeria;
come on and let your colors burst
lifting weights while Wolfcub tries to bite him;
make 'em go oh! oh! Oh!
measuring his bicep again, and nodding in satisfaction.
you're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe
âI'm bored,â Kettricken sighs as she and Fitz hang out with Kettricken's entourage. âI wish Verity would get me pregnant.â
âHow can you be bored with fifty people constantly offering to play with you?â Fitz says. âAlso, ew.â
âI could be back home fighting bears and lifting sacks over my head,â Kettricken whines, âbut I'm stuck here in Lamesville with these boring losers and my husband is constantly off doing Skill stuff instead of having sex with me. Lady Modesty is constantly suggesting we watch the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice,â she adds, disgusted.
Fitz slaps her. âYour job here isn't to be butch! This castle has been a fucking sausage party for years, and the best person to Girlboss it up is you. That means making moodboards, drinking iced coffees, doing each other's nails and YES, watching the objectively worse version of Pride and Prejudice! Look at Lady Hopeful, she's unironically singing along to 'I Knew You Were Trouble'! Now suck it up, buttercup, and go watch the part where Mr. Darcy confesses his love to Elizabeth!â
 âYes sir,â Kettricken mumbles.
âBastard, first name The?â a messenger says as he clips through the wall. âKing Shrewd finally wants to see you.â
Fitz stands up, brushes himself off, and heads up to Grandpa's house...

In August of last year, Ascendant Studios developer Aaron (name changed for anonymity) was ready to take a well-deserved victory lap. He had crunched hard with many of his colleagues in the final sprint to complete Ascendantâs debut game, Immortals of Aveum, but the team had finally done it. He attended a launch party in the Bay Area where he celebrated with his colleagues, some of whom he said had to pay partially out of pocket to make the trip. But while the event was supposed to be jubilant, there was an uneasy atmosphere: it seemed like Immortals of Aveum wasnât performing especially well. At the party, developers kept asking leadership how the game was doing, only to be met with non-committal answers. A few weeks later, almost half of the studio â Aaron included â had been laid off, with managers citing Immortals of Aveumâs underperformance. Ascendant Studios was just one of numerous studios that has laid off a chunk of its workforce in the last year and a half as part of an ongoing trend of mass layoffs impacting studios large and small. There have been many attempts to answer the question of why exactly this is happening, with analysts, CEOs, and other industry experts weighing in on discussions trying to explain it. The commonly-cited villain was fairly straightforward: COVID-19. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick actually put it quite effectively to us when we asked him about layoffs last November: "With regard to the industry, I do think people got a little fat and happy during the pandemic," he said. "I think there was a perception on the part of many that the music would never stop." Zelnick was stating a refrain we've heard elsewhere: the big surge in spending during the pandemic effectively tricked a lot of companies into overspending, overhiring, overestimating. Then, when games revenues leveled back out in 2022 or so as gamers left the house again, cuts had to be made. The ESA has touted this explanation, as has the IGDA. A Tencent business development director told NPR the same thing. It's a likely and understandable explanation given the havoc the pandemic wreaked everywhere. But it isnât the entire story. Layoffs like the ones at Ascendant donât fit in with the pandemic narrative. And with over 10,000 layoffs in 2023, and over 6,000 more in 2024, simply saying that companies got a little too eager during a global pandemic is starting to sound overly trite. Even executives are starting to sense they canât rely on this explanation. In Riot Gamesâ public statement explaining the reasoning behind layoffs affecting 530 individuals, or 11% of all of Riot Games, Riot admitted that the decisions that led to these cuts were made long before the pandemic began.

so another year is coming to an end, and i feel like a lot has happened to me this year that i should do a little post so i can remember everything i went through and the good things that came from it. under the cut cause this will probably get long
so this year i moved back in with my parents for mental health reasons. i left behind a good job, great coworkers and a place i had just recently finally got to myself. even though i had all that, i was still feeling so bad with myself i realized i needed the support to get back to my feet.
i lost my most precious baby in the process to a horrible desease that took him from me in a matter of days, and i had to watch him suffer through it all while not being able to do anything besides make him as comfortable as i could.
with all that, i also got myself into a terrible job that was so taxing on me i feel like i deleted most of those months from my mind as a defense mechanism, to the point i broke down one day after being humiliated by my asshole boss and finally quit.
all of this happened while i changed psychiatrists and treatment at least twice, so the weeks following me quitting my job were very important to finally give my mind some rest and now i'm in a job that is a lot more considerate and less taxing on my mental health.
now on for the good things.
this year i managed to see two of my faves live, nct 127 in january and ateez in august. i haven't been to concerts in so long and now i'm completely addicted. i can't wait to see what 2024 has in store (hopefully skz?)
through all of that, some friends have been soooo important to me. you guys were there for me in my darkest hours and for the happy times as well.

@hongamon , @changbeens and @cryiingemoji . you guys have been with me since last year and i know i can count on you being there to cheer me up with blorbo pics or to talk shit about people. thanks for your friendship and i hope you know i'll always be there if you need me
@ggthydrangea and @winterfloral , your words (or gifs) of reassurance mean the world to me. also @juiceofmoons and @missyedits , even though we didn't talk much i'll always have you in my heart. i know y'all been busy this year with work and uni, but i'm glad we finally managed our mb babes' call

SDCC 2024: Mikey Way Rings in Holidays All Year Long with Christmas 365 (Interview)
By Justin Epps - Published Sep 7, 2024
Dark Horse Comics
â° SUMMARY
⢠Christmas 365 from Dark Horse Comics releases this year, a festive series about a family celebrating Christmas all year round. ⢠Co-writer Mikey Way talks about the nostalgia and magic of Christmas, and the importance of family in his work. ⢠Way collaborates with Jonathan Rivera and Piotr Kowalski to craft a dream project embracing the 80s/90s Christmas movie feel.
Full interview under the cut:
Christmas has come early for Dark Horse Comics readers. During this yearâs San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher revealed it would be releasing Christmas 365 later this year. This festive new series comes from the creative team of Mikey Way, Jonathan Rivera, Piotr Kowalski, Brad Simpson, and Joshua Reed.
Christmas 365 tells the story of a family who has gone through a particularly challenging year and their attempts to come back together through a Christmas season that lasts the whole year round. Screen Rant caught up with Christmas 365 co-writer Mikey Way and dug into his thoughts behind this unique holiday story.
Screen Rant: From the premise I'm guessing you're a big fan of Christmas. But why Christmas 365?
Mikey Way: As a child of the 80s, a lot of my favorite movies were Christmas movies. I think the holiday stuck with me, the the mythology of it, the imagery really resonated with me. I know I'm not alone on this, the world is obsessed with Christmas. You go in stores and the Christmas stuffs out in August. It was after 9/11 I noticed Christmas started earlier at the store. I remember taking a mental note of that. People needed it at that time. I feel like with social media people have been able to express their love of Christmas and find like-minded people that are like-minded. There's Christmas podcasts, there's Christmas basements.
Mikey Way: Anyway, child of the 80s. Christmas Story, Scrooged, Christmas Vacation, Gremlins, Die Hard, Santa Claus: The Movie, all those great Jim Henson movies. These were important stories to me. And so I've always had that itch in me to tell a Christmas story. And I think it was around 2013 I watched a bunch of Christmas movies in a row and it wasn't Christmas time, it was summertime, I think. I remember watching Home Alone and Christmas Vacation and being like "What stories are left to tell?". Then it hit me like a bolt. "What about a family that're kind of disconnected and one of them gets the the wild idea to celebrate it all year long?". Like that's gonna fix everything.
With Christmas, there's this effort to see the world through the eyes of a child and recapture that feeling of wonderment. Is that what you wanted from your story?
Mikey Way: It's the one month out of the year where you can forget about life's pressures a little bit. And there's wonder and magic and hope and promise. Especially when you have children. It's the Super Bowl. For a child things revolve around "Christmas is coming!". So getting to see it through my two girls' eyes...that's what it's all about. There's so many layers to it. It's a layered holiday. But it's just something that's so great. In a world full of gloom and doom, it's something that's just awesome and great. Like there's a velvet cloud around you in December. Even November.
Mikey Way: There's there's a lot of bad stuff that happens in the world. People get busy, people get stressed, people have responsibilities. And it's the time where you can celebrate being a family, celebrate the people you love, and you could show them how much you love them.
You're co writing this with Jonathan Rivera. Both of you guys did books for DC Young Animal which was definitely a more experimental line, but you guys are trying to tell a more grounded story here, correct?
Mikey Way: We're very like-minded. He went to art school with my brother. We all like the same stuff. Trainspotting, Britpop, Stone Temple Pilots, The Crow, action figures, X-Men, anime. Jon was a kindred spirit. He's one of my best friends in the world. He's someone I wanted to write a story with. This was the perfect opportunity because he feels the same way about this 80s/90s Christmas story. He's got the same itch to scratch.
Your previous book, Collapser, had a real strong family theme to it, which seems carry on in Christmas 365. What is it about family that speaks to you so strongly in your work?
Mikey Way: Family's everything. As you get older you start to realize that. And it plays into the holiday of Christmas. When it comes down to the family's all you got. You can have an important job. You can have all the material possessions in the world. You could have fancy this and that. But when it comes down to it, who's sitting at the dinner table with you? Those are who's important and the people that pick you up when you're needing it. They're there for you, you're there for them. So the family unit has always been something extremely important to me. Especially as I get older and have children and extended family. That's really all you got in this world and it's the most beautiful thing there is.
In addition to Rivera, you're also working with Piotr Kowalski. How was it crafting this dream project with him and his art?
Mikey Way: What's interesting about him is he's mostly a horror guy, really. When we got his artwork, most of the demonstration pages and pieces were horror and then I went on his Instagram recently and it's all horror and I'm like "It kind of works, because this is supposed to be an 80s/90s Christmas movie.". If you watch these movies, they're all dark and they always tried to sneak a horror element into it. In Home Alone there was the scary boiler.
For me, it was A Christmas Story when Ralphie goes on the slide and the Santa just boots him down.
Mikey Way: There's always a moment of playful scariness in those movies. So I think it fit the tone, because you want it to look a little VHS. I feel like he was able to tell it exactly. Like if we closed our eyes and we were envisioning Christmas 365 as a movie, that's what it would look like. Me and Jon saw his art and were like "This is the guy.".
You previously spoke about the influence of suburban genre movies like The Burbs and Better Off Dead. How did these movies inform your Christmas story?
Mikey Way: So the story goes me and my brother watched Better Off Dead probably a couple of times a week for years. That and One Crazy Summer, those those two movies for me and my brother were very important. There was this Gonzo stuff in it. It was a slightly grounded, suburban comedy that had all these kind of wacky, fantastical ideas in it. All those movies had a sport. Better Off Dead was skiing.
Oh, like Heathers and croquet?
Mikey Way: Team Wolf had basketball. They all had a sport. Also there's a weird claymation dream sequence, remember? There was all this weird stuff, but there's something about that movie that struck a chord with me and my brother and we watched it literally once or twice a week for decades. But yes, Savage Steve Holland was a big influence on me and Jon Rivera.
Christmas 365 #1Â is available on December 4th from Dark Horse Comics.
