I got sooo tired of the booktok discourse this week that even my little forecast wasn’t even fun. (I had like half a draft about an ‘unseasonable classics debate’ before I just got too tired.) And part of that is being actually exhausted this week, because I haven’t had time to recover from the weekend but it’s also like...bleh because all of the ‘solutions’ to the discourse just lie somewhere in the middle and it exhausts me that we will just keep having these arguments forever because social media thrives off of the extremes because negative emotions keep people looking at ads longer.
Like
Sure, what works western society has decided form the ‘classical canon’ were largely white, eurocentric, straight, and male, and the introduction in many high school classrooms to complex or historical works is largely insufficient to foster a love of reading those denser, older texts, but writing off all ‘classics’ as boring and worthless is self-limiting and also dismissive of the many novels considered classics that are by marginalized authors. (And while no one as an adult should be shamed into reading classics, there is a point to teaching these works in high school and honestly if you want to be a writer - especially if you want to write retellings - you’re going to need to engage with classic texts. And you might even find you enjoy them!)
Everyone has their own personal limit when it comes to dark content, including fact-based dark content like true crime, and finding that comfort level is up to the individual. Some people might draw the line at only consuming true crime content about historical cases, where everyone involved is long dead. Others might only want to engage with nonviolent crime. Some people may not want to engage with works produced by large commercial studios, while others might be suspicious of the quality of fact checking and journalistic integrity of independent creators. That line is going to be different for everyone and it’s often a matter of trial and error to learn what to look for and find where your opinions lie. And while much modern true crime can be exploitative and it’s good to be aware of that exploitation and the ways documentary has narrative and intent like any other , being interested in those topics is not inherently immoral and says nothing about you or your values.
It can be really fun to challenge yourself to read more books by using tracking apps and setting goals, but if you find yourself purposefully doing things to inflate your count, like forgoing longer or more complex books you’d have otherwise chosen to read in favor of shorter ones or you’re misleading people about how you’ve gotten your totals so high or you’re not enjoying or absorbing what you’re reading or you’re flat out lying about it, it’s time to take a step back and ask yourself what you’re doing.
Boom. There it is. Done. I’ve solved like half of booktok’s problems.
I also just do not understand how so many people saw one snobby 20 year old and decided that they just had to weigh in dunking on her, and they’re the good guys in this? Like? One 20 year old versus like hundreds (I’ve probably seen hundreds at this point) of people calling her out on it and making fun of her appearance and saying that all classics are worthless and boring...and you think you’re all the good guys in this? You’re the heroes? Really? Really?

Fuck anyone who makes jokes about a crash that literally sent a driver to hospital.
Max's crash at Silverstone is the third most severe crash we've had in F1 in the past five years (most severe being Grosjean's in Bahrain 2020, followed by Zhou's in Silverstone 2022).
Additionally, the fact he was sent to the hospital at all is significant as Silverstone has its own medical facility on the grounds. It says everything that even as a precautionary measure, Max (+ Alex & Zhou the following year) was sent to the nearest hospital instead.
Do not for a single second take a driver walking away from a severe crash for granted. Sometimes, the miracles don't happen. Sometimes, a driver doesn't walk away unscathed. You do not want to be watching when the worst-case scenario becomes a real possibility, or worse; a reality.
If the like from Lando's dad is real... I have nothing else to say, from the bottom of my heart; FUCK YOU!

so the good place is widely lauded on this site for its takes on morality and capitalism, which i totally agree with
but i think it should get more recognition for the line "all humans are aware of death. so we're all a little bit sad all the time. that's just the deal. we don't get offered any better ones. and if you try and ignore your sadness, it just ends up leaking out of you anyway. i've been there, and everybody's been there. so don't fight it. in the words of a very wise bed bath and beyond employee i once knew - go ahead and cry all you want. but you're gonna have to pay for that toilet plunger."

[ID: Digital illustration in color of Vash and Wolfwood from Trigun Maximum. It’s two 3 panel comics that illustrates the same sequence. The first focuses on Vash. In the first panel, he’s in a hurried motion with a worried expression. In the second, he’s stopped, huffing a breath out as he’s scanning for Wolfwood (not pictured). In the final panel, he breaks out into a relieved smile, eyes lighting up with warm cheeks.
The second comic focuses on Wolfwood. In the first panel, he’s looking downwards to the right with a cigarette in his mouth, wearing a neutral expression. On his face are notable scratch marks to indicate him being in a fight prior. In the second panel, he turns towards the viewer, lifting his head as he notices Vash (as from the previous sequence). In the final panel, he smiles warmly with teeth and holds up a peace sign. END ID]
[ID: Sketchy black and white drawings of Vash and Wolfwood, continuing off the comic. Wolfwood’s back is to the viewer while Vash’s profile can be seen, now by Wolfwood’s side. He has a bright smile as he says to Wolfwood, “You’re safe!” Wolfwood responses, bearing a grin too, “Who do ya think yer talking to? ‘Course I am. Look, I got them alive.” He points to two figures who are tied up and have comically large head bumps. Vash looks to them with an uncertain expression as he says, “Oh! You did, huh… Are you sure they’re alive?” Wolfwood, with a more irritated expression, responds “What, didn’t think I could do it?” Vash says, “No, no! I knew you could!” and pats Wolfwood on the cheek and his head comfortingly. END ID]

I think it's kinda interesting how, while the Beasts are opposites of the Ancients, some feel like reflections to Ancients they're not directly related to.
Starting with the pair that feels most obvious, Silent Salt and Dark Cacao. Their designs especially seem similar with the armor, sword, and color palette. Silence also feels like it can be related to Dark Cacao's isolation during his previous arc.
This feels the same as with Pure Vanilla and Mystic Flour. Again with their color palettes, but also with their religious theming, both being obligated to help all those that seek their guidance.
Again, mostly similar vibe with these two. You could even argue that Destruction can be considered an extention of Passion in a way. These next pairs get a bit weaker with their comparisons, which is why I started with the strongest ones first.
My comparisons for Golden Cheese and Eternal Sugar come down to both of them having wings and some speculation I have. "Eternal" I feel could imply abundance, which may be a motivation for Eternal Sugar's slothfulness. It's possible they simply have all they desire, thus no longer having the will to do anything.
Lastly, for White Lily Cookie and Shadow Milk, the biggest point of comparison I have is that Shadow Milk Cookie's theatrical presentation could also be considered an extention of freedom (especially since it's implied that he used to be an academic). This is the one I really stretch the most with, I'd say.
Why do I bring any of this up? What I think about these possible links is that the Beasts reflect what each of the Ancients could become, if taken to their logical extreme. Also, with those that share their Soul Jams being their opposites (Pure Vanilla being truth and Shadow Milk being deceit, etc.), it can imply that each of the Ancients are each other's opposites as well. Opposites that mesh well enough despite it, anyway.
I'm bad at analysis, so do what you will with this. I don't know if this is anything. Implications and whatnot.
