I think we moved on too quickly from Bruce Trying To Work From Home During Lockdown because it’s always funny and I was not in this fandom at the time.

My favorite version of this is Tim and Bruce being an a WE teams meeting. The oddest thing happening on Tim’s screen is some truly questionable art work by Bart on the wall behind him.

Whereas, Bruce has the general Wayne Manor disaster happening all around him. There’s yelling and fighting. Dick did a flip out the window. There’s a cow. The usual.

Bruce is also a disaster in the way you expect Brucie Wayne to be, until Alfred the Cat runs across his keyboard and he genuinely can’t figure out how to fix what happened. Bruce’s screen is upside down. There’s a filter now. He doesn’t know how to change it.

Everybody is just watching him flounder until a hand comes into the screen and nudges Bruce out of the way, and suddenly Tim is fixing the problem.

Which is weird because Tim is still in his screen.

But no, seriously? A play on the popular time travel fix-it, but one where Bilbo dies protecting Thorin during the Battle of Five Armies? And Thorin is inconsolable, I can’t even. And he might pull himself together long enough to stabilize Erebor, but there is No Way he can be a good ruler in his grief, so he has to pass it on. (I was going to say to Dain just to twist that knife a little harder, but actually there are reasons hinted below on why Fíli & Kíli must have lived.) And Thorin just… he wanders, probably. A shell of himself for the rest of his days.

And yet, when he inevitably passes away, he awakens on the road to the Shire. And he’s younger. And he’s so confused, quickly suspecting he must be dead and this is nothing like what he was taught to expect. But then his instant impulse to check Bag End has him walking in on that same meeting from so many years ago, his Company intact, the wizard smiling at him, introducing him to… to…

Bilbo. His Bilbo. The sight of him makes Thorin want to weep and hold him and never let go again, but he is instantly terrified to do anything, because is this a dream? Will he wake? What happens if he says something new, will ‘this’ be ruined somehow? He doesn’t want that, doesn’t want to change anything, save for the end. The very end.

But, even as he strives to mimic himself, he knows something is wrong. He’s off-script from the start purely due to his shock, but he tries to recover, get back on track, and within words, he’s managed it. The discussion is righting itself, and no one there could possibly know the difference, right?

And yet, Bilbo stares at him. From the instant Thorin walked in, Bilbo was staring, looking lost. As he had before, that first time, but it wasn’t the same. Bilbo had been confused then as well, but it had been a light, anxious uncertainty then. This time? He was frowning, his expression tense.

His eyes haunted.

Because Bilbo has also lived that night before. Just once as far as that night was concerned, but it was familiar to him. So familiar. That first night had haunted him for decades, to the very end of his long, long life, when he thought he might know rest, and perhaps — if he was truly as lucky as some once claimed — he might get to see his friends again. See Thorin again.

Instead he had slept, drifted away, and awoken to a battle about to start.

And he had questioned it, had stumbled that first time, but he adjusted. He tried to save Thorin. To save them all.

And he failed. Again.

Then, when he finally slept for the first time afterwards, he awoke to the battle starting again.

And again.

And he tried, over and over, day after the same horrid day to find a way to get through. And sometimes Thorin lived. Sometimes the princes did. Sometimes, new people died. The wrong people.

Once, in his darkest moments, he thought that perhaps someone was trying to teach him humility, teach him to accept fate as it was and not try to fight it, not change anything. And so he went through the motions as well as he could remember them after all those years, following them to the letter, save for when he sobbed all the harder when it was done.

He sobbed again, the relief bone-deep, when he awoke again the next day, the battle still awaiting him.

He lost count of his attempts, and no one could rightly vouch for his state of mind when he finally resorted to the one thing he had refused to try: Not since that fourth (or fifth?) time, when he managed to be there for the fight and threw himself in Azog’s way, but Thorin pulled him out of the way, and screamed at him with such outrage and fear and despair in the few beats he bought by pushing Azog over, that Bilbo never attempted it again.

Until that final day. And that time, Bilbo didn’t give Thorin a chance to stop him.

And it broke a heart Bilbo thought long since shattered to hear Thorin scream, to feel him pick him up and hold him close and hear his voice like that. But the words faded soon enough, and he couldn’t feel anything, nothing except for regret and acceptance, because this was different. He felt it. This time, he would not awaken again, and that was fine. He had saved his king, kept all of his dwarves safe that last time. If that was to be the last, then that was all he could ask for. It was alright. He could sleep.

Then he woke up.

Not outside Erebor, but inside a hole. His hole. Bag End.

He walked outside, stood in the sun, and watched a wizard walk up the road to his door.

He did not understand.

It’s a 551 chapter long webnovel. actually i’m just gonna link this post because im kind of massively bad at explaining it. it’s like. what if you were just some guy* who was the only reader of this very long kinda shitty webnovel, and as you read the last chapter the supernatural apocalyptic events in the novel start to happen in real life. and also, crucially, the protagonist of the novel time loops after his death, and when the reverse isekai happens, it’s ostensibly his third time loop. this is the basic premise. the thing about orv is it’s kind of difficult to explain why i love it without massive spoilers. but essentially it’s about the bond between the reader and the protagonist and the writer. it’s about loving a story it’s about stories being people and people being stories it’s three layers of narratives wrapped in a trenchcoat that is also a narrative. it has really fascinating worldbuilding that is all about the narrative/thematic purpose of things. it has a plot that just keeps escalating in stakes and never gets boring and i literally could not put it down. it has the worlds most unreliable narrator (and some really fun/devastating stuff with pov changes. it’s the omniscient reader’s viewpoint:]). it has incredible characters (and incredible women 👍 i started orv because my friend pitched jung heewon to me… it has women who wield the sword of judgement and are the king of no killing’s executioner. it has girls who meet their future self, forced into being a catastrophic harbinger of destruction. it has girls who had to kill their best friends to survive. it has women who say i guess i’ll just have to be the villain again and who do things for the people they love that are absolutely devastating to think about both selfish and incredibly selfless). it has incredible relationships between characters. it’s about there being an incommunicable wall separating you from other people but it’s still worth writing on the wall:). by the ending it has recontextualized the beginning so thoroughly you cannot be normal about it ever again. It’s good 👍

Look. I loved LOVED lucifer series in general and I absolutely onboard with s6 deckerstar daughter and time travels cause I adore both this tropes, but the way it was handled....... that was unnecessary cruel and poor. I love good time loop ouroboros terminator style written tragedies that you can't avoid to happen, but that didn't make sense in lucifer. First of all RORY HAD WINGS ALL HER LIFE. If she was so angry at Lucifer and wanted revenge/answers so bad that she literally involuntary time traveled to get it, why couldn't she JUST FLY TO HELL AND CONFRONT HER DAD AT ANY POINT OF CHLOE'S LIFETIME? Makes no sense she didn't try to find him in her own timeline at least once, he's not hard to find, he's not hiding, Lucifer is literally in the first place you would go look for him - in HELL. No need to time travel for that, girl.

More than that, if they couldn't stop the time loop, they def could STAGE all her acts in it in order to have a good life together and still keep the story happening. Like, Lucifer would work part-time in hell (like Ame in heaven) an spend half of the time with his family on earth, and tell Rory what happened in s6 and what she did, so Rory would KNOW about her future and learn to control her powers sooner with her dad's help. Then when it's time Rory could time traveled back and simply ACT angry, so her parents would believe the story she told, how she never knew her father and how he just vanished and all of that (that is not true anymore or never ever was true at all). Yes, all of this is a little messed up, but it is still more logical and satisfying than the fact that Rory basically ruined her parents' and her own happy life on earth together for her character development arc, that she wouldn't need at the first place if she didn't do it.

i kinda wish there was a way to gift away digitally purchased games when i'm done with them. i have a handful of games on steam that are one and done experiences, or are games i just didn't like much, and i'm not gonna play them anymore.

like, i'd gladly give away my license to use the game to someone else, like a friend of mine, if i could. You can let people borrow physical copies of games, so why not digitals?
